Allways on the way to find different points of view in a concept. I agree to Paul Arden’s idea - “ Whatever you think - think the opposite!” I like to play with people habits, their ever y day rutine and casuality - nice subjec t to play with, change or even break it. Interested in produc t design as a communicator between concept idea and produc t user. I t is interesting, how people take things differently. I t inspires me to communicate with them in specific way - one of the reasons to make a produc t for some special audience.

What is, in your opinion, design and a designer? What are the career passibilities for a designer in Latvia? What is the highest goal of your career and your professional ideal?
Baiba Linga Bērziņa, born 1982, product and graphic designer There has been a lot of talking about the search of the roots and the future of the Latvian design in the past and the ethnography. Baiba Linga-Bērziņa right now is the one, who has realized this well thought ideas most successfully. Her most noticable achievement is a series of candles, in which latvian ethnographic signs are integrated with elegance and they are up-to-date. In the creative CV of Baiba there are also other clever solutions of everyday situations with the help of design: an unusual pillow with a face on it, a sitting ring as an alternative to a chair in the open air and others. More information: http://www.baibalingaberzina.lv/ 1. Design is the altruistic observation of the human everyday-life. The meaning of the word design is extending with every day, it becomes more harder to define and harness it. For me design as such and creating it is a intelectual and emotional game of wit. During the game a subject is created, that can change a humans life by improving or destroying it. A designer is a participant of the game and the results as well as the consequences lay on his conscience. 2. A career in context with Latvia is said too loud. I would not like to sound pesimistic, but right now a career in Latvia is impossible. Often the work with a producer or a client brings one to selfviolation. Most pleasant and productive is it to create design prototypes in my own space and with my own money and to hope that one day they will find their place in the production and afterwards in the everyday life. The designer has to be not only the creator of a design product, but he has to become a business person, who can sell his ideas on the market. Right now is the time to create optimistic, utopian ideas, so that they can be fulfilled when the good times come. I hope that the complaints about the crisis will not be reflected in the latvian design and that they will not lumber with us for centuries to come. 3. By using the overall confusion, it is necessary to do everything in ones power to get new knowledge. If necessary, you should even work without being paid, because I believe, that sooner or later it will pay off. It is important to go abroad to hunt new impressions. Right now I’m collecting and reflecting on my experience as a graphic designer in advertisment as well as cognitions of the teachers position at the Riga Design and Art School. My professional ideal would be to work in a designer union creating new products and fulfill projects here, in Latvia. I would like to solve designer problems, not the financial ones.

A LOOK OVER THE SHOULDER: LV DESIGN 2009
Project was based on latvian language characteristics, on the way people usually say when they measuse. People often use sayings like edge of the knife, half of the spoon or “on eye ”. Project materialise those sayings and “grave them in stone”.

The name of project AMBUSCADE Author student KATRINA ÄŒEMME Multiple birdhouse in the city, where small birds can rise their children and people can watch their times.
The name of project GUTS Author student AGNESE ÄŒEMME Water tap in the Riga city. It is a hudge problem in Riga city to get water in hot summer day, so Agnese made a design for watere tap with hand sensor and lightning. As an inspiration she chosed nature a grass scape and water.
The name of project STREAMBOTTLE Author student KARLIS BOGUSTOVS Water bottle design line. Water is alive, whatever you say to water he keeps inside. So you have to give a lot of good words to water in these botles, the spirituality simbolizes mandala on it. For water tidiness there is silver string inside.
