Artist Profile: Janelle Amos

Janelle Amos lives and creates just over the hill from The Louise on her family vineyard property in Seppeltsfield. Janelle's art practice is heavily informed by the energy of the natural rural environment surrounding her Barossa life, expressing a felt sense of connectivity and observation.

Dynamic mark making and sweeping gestures are signatures of Janelle’s work, results of deep observation and listening to the interconnectedness of ecology, environment and her inner self. This sensitive ecosomatic approach invites a raw untamed freedom, play and discovery into her practice. Acrylics, graphite and pastels stir a lucid emotional resonance held in shape, line and colour, embodying a sense of both restoration and refreshing exhilaration.

Commissioned by Baillie Lodges to create artworks for the Marananga and Stonewell guest suites at The Louise, Janelle has created a series of contemporary works expressing the connection between the physical and the atmosphere, a sensory attunement to oneself in this landscape, to reawaken, reconnect and realign.

Janelle muses: ‘I’m fascinated by the intrinsic imperfection and unapologetic expression of the natural world around me. The way a tree drops its bark in the wind for example, scattering to the ground at my feet; the shapes and gestures of that bark on the ground can be enough to spark a series of compositions in the studio. I embrace the unpredictable nature of rural living for this reason, the daily awe and wonder over seemingly insignificant things.’
