[Task of design]

[Analysis of planning in the town]

The urban comprehensive planning is the comprehensive deployment and implementation measures of urban nature, developmental goal and scale, land use, spatial layout as well as other constructions in a certain stage. The curriculum design requires students use the basic knowledge, professional theory, skills, investigation and experimental methods of comprehensive planning to coordinate and deal with the problems in urban and rural areas. And through the design, students can be familiar with the formulating works of comprehensive planning and enhance their practical ability.

Wutan town is located in the northwest of Taojiang County, covering an area of 208.96 km2. Its southern part is near River Zi and its north is connected to Dingcheng district of Changde City and Hanshou county, with its west adjacent to Anhua county. Wutan has convenient transportation to the railway station and airport, because the roads such as G207 and S233 run through the whole town. Also, it possesses the whole waterway of River Zi. Thanks to the intercommunication of Erguang highway, which is under 5 km away from its entrance to the township, as well as Yima highway, the town is superior in location, convenient in traffic.

a. Spatial structure of village and town Basing on the development of the urban economy, planning of traffic transportation as well as existing layout features, the spatial layout of villages and town adopt the pattern of “concentrating the lands of centre as well as developing the area of certain points or along the axis”. The lotus city area is seen as the centre, then original town and Songshanping area as side centres. With G207 and S233 serve as developing axis, Wutan changes into the pattern, which is mentioned above, and drives the balanced development among centre villages and base villages. b. The scale levels and structure of villages According to the social economy development level and speed in urban areas, the requirements for urbanization and modern agriculture and the status quo of villages and operation demand, the village and town system in Wutan town can be divided into three levels, which are town area, centre village, and base villages. c. The function of Villages Town area— the comprehensive centre of administrative, cultural and economic activities in the town. Centre village—the villages that the residents live together, build houses intensively and serve surrounding base villages. Base villages—the primary residential places, where the residents work on agriculture or household sideline production, focus on developing the primary industry.

With comprehensive analysis on land use conditions surrounded the township, I have found that the development of the town has been restricted by topography, highways, boarders on its north, east and west respectively. However, its south part has not only close relations to its construction area but also large area and smooth terrain. Therefore, south part is seen as the crucial development area of the township.

[The design concept of building groups for industrial & warehouse ] N

Economic development of Wutan town has been limited by funds, while Wutan has rich agricultural and forest resources especially the oil-tea and bamboo resources in the surroundings. After the construction of Erguang highway, Wutan is expected to make progress in economic development of related industries(e.g., industries transfer from Guangzhou, oil-tea refining as well as bamboo products processing). In order to provide guidance for afterward development of industries in the town, I have conducted detailed planning for industrial chain of oiltea as an example.

[The design concept of building groups for residence] N

Urban renewal is a brilliant way to explore the vitality of the old district and make surrounding areas develop in order. During the urban renewal, inappropriate land use also should be altered. For example, primary school with inappropriate topography should be removed and pumping station is expected to be added because of drainage difficulty and so on. In addition, activity fields, such as parks, squares and so forth, can be added appropriately to meet residents’ daily entertainment and recreational needs.

Kindergarden

Industrial land change to Greenbelt

Add lands for service such as parks, rubbish transition station and stores.

Adjust road linear and the number of current roads. (Red for new, and orange for adjusted) . Adjust partial inappropriate land (e.g., industrial land and land for educational institutions).

The old district is continuously developed outwardly like fingers.

[The design concept of new district]

N

The new district can be primarily divided into residential area and resort area. The inspiration of the Main road linear comes from the water form of River Zi. And according to the urban nature (town for recreation), I intensified the road net and added some supporting facilities, such as custom cultural villages and family vocational villages and so on, so as to lead people to the comfortable living standard. Combining with surrounding tourism resources, wutan will reach the goal of being a riverside ecological town for recreation.

The urban landscape elements should be further refined in Lotus city area under the guidance of comprehensive planning so as to reshape characteristics, deeply improve the landscape system. The land usage, spatial state, architectural types, square greenbelt, road transportation, municipal facilities, environmental embellishment and human activity sites and so forth should be arrange and design. During the whole urban design, the position, line types and cross section of national road 207 in the comprehensive planning should be maintained.

Also, it will be only a five-minute drive from the interchange to the lotus city area after the construction of Erlianhaote-Guangzhou highway. Meanwhile, there is an unique and advantaged residential environment, which can be developed into a resort for vacation and recreation combined with the third industry. The North is to Longjia village, the South is to Lotus plain, the West is to Dengpo pool and the East is to River Zi, with a total covering area of 235.9 hm2.

[The analysis of the previous comprehensive planning]

The previous comprehensive planning has adjusted measure to regional topography. And with the establishment of new centralized commercial area and the functional guidance of large-scale, it is easy to be developed in the future. However, due to the shortage of funds, the national road of 207 has not been treated with cross-border transportation. Also, it had the shortcomings such as large-scale separated lands, high development cost at one time as well as the negative effect of water smooth due to crossing road and so on.

Existing farmlands The roads are mostly in disorder, and need to be planned again. The existing architectures are of poor quality and universally need to removed, while many existing farmland and waters can be remained to serve as landscape so as to provide a green space to recall residents’ memory.

Dramas and films related to martial morality are played in theatre.

Weapons and books related to martial art will be displayed in martial museum.

Parks with martial art as theme will offer visitors with enlightenment ideologically.

The martial art training hall will offer citizens with a site for professional learning of martial art.

[Historical evolution] Let us be stronger!

You are using the same moves! According to the ancient books, Wutan town is formed in war period in Song dynasty. A uprising tribe failed in a war.

And then the rest troops escaped and stayed here since they found Wutan had extremely good living conditions.

16

Thus, the leader of the tribe called upon heroes all over the world to come to Wutan to practice martial art by learning from each other so as to raise their strength.

They hoped to recuperate and build up energy here so that they could fight again. Therefore, they decided to improve their martial capabilities by mutual practice. However, they made little progress since they almost had the same martial styles of the same levels.

Since then, Wutan became famous where has been a well-known place for practicing martial art in accordance with its Chinese meaning.

[Landscape of rice field]

The rice cropping in Hunan province can be back to BC 12,000 to 16,000 year. Besides, Hunan has unique as well as advantaged weather and geological environment which are suitable for rice cropping. As for Lotus city area, there have been existing farmlands planted by local residents in planned central green corridor and southern as well as northern bases. Apart from current farmland, I add up some kinds of crops in the corridor and design the wood stack runaway, pavilion and so on to provide space for residents’ practice of martial art and other recreational activities.

Indica glutinous rice

For residents who have been always living in this land, they get used to going out to farm in the morning and come back in the evening all the time. I do not hope to change residents’ living habits, but I do hope to improve their quality of life by planning. Therefore, I have given unified planning for farmlands within the 3 to 5-minute-walk circle so that farmers can continue with their original schedule even after the construction. While for tourists, they can experience the fun of farming by planting on themselves.

[Task of design]

[Reservation of mountain]

The district is located in the intersection of two main roads( Yiyang Avenue and Kangfu road), and western part of Heshan in city of Yiyang, Hunan province. It has been listed in the urban central area by the Comprehensive Planning of Yiyang City (2004-2020). On the east and north of this area are commercial districts, and on the west and south are residential areas. In this design, students should demonstrate the nature as well as strength of construction land on the basis of urban economics and principles as well as the planning mentioned above. Then they can conduct detailed plans and designs by the decided nature of the land so as to train their comprehensive ability of dealing with large public buildings, road traffic organizations, square, greenfield as well as environmental embellishment in urban key sections.

Since the previous construction has no unified planning, the nature of this land, including residential area, commercial area, municipal facilities area and so on, is chaos. And it results in many problems pressing for solution, such as insufficient parking lots in commercial area, security risks in residential area, the lack of activity space, the waste of land and so on.

It can supply space for citizens’ outdoor activities.

a. Traffic

Therefore, during my design, firstly, I will give a new layout for this land by adjusting its nature to the surroundings. Then I will retain the things which can evoke citizens’ memories and endow them with new functions. Furthermore, in order to raise the site recognition and residents’ sense of place, I put the concept of Yiyang Bamboo culture on buildings and landscape. Last but not least, during the whole process of the design, I try to solve existing problems in this area by appropriate building layout and recalculation of matching facilities for the sake of optimizing citizens’ quality of life.

Since the connection of straight internal A-level road and main road may arouse transit traffic. I adopt to curved road as well as staggered entrance on vertical or lateral directions to reduce transit traffic. Then, I adjust the internal secondary road to regional functions and geological conditions.

[Design analysis]——Architecture

[Effect drawing of the central landscape]

a. Architectural styles

Yiyang is known as "the capital of bamboo". And bamboo represents the meanings of constancy, integrity and humility in Chinese culture.

Developing bamboos into an architecture form by expanding their tubes and making their joints inward.

Visually enhance the relevance between the buildings and bamboo by adding bamboo to the architectural surface.

Giving similar "bamboo treatment" to important buildings in each area so as to extend local culture.

b. Architectural layout

I hate it!

Ventilation and lighting of each office can be guaranteed with the south to north layout of the bar-shaped office building.

Develop the special sense of place and reduce the crime rate by enclosing residential buildings, according to the low to high topography.

No need for umbrella!

Customers can enjoy their shopping without worrying about rainy weather because of the corridor-style commercial buildings.

And the rest buildings will be designed according to their own characteristics and surrounding roads.

[Effect drawing of the entrance landscape]

[Design analysis]——Landscape a. Main Square

Develop visual relations between main traffic nodes and landscape nodes, and penetrate the relations into other groups.

Spread this visual connection by taking the growth pattern of bamboo leaves as inspiration.

Form a flexible and irregular square boarder by fuzzifying the growth direction of bamboo leaves.

A folded linear square will be formed by clarifying the margin and boarder and connecting it with buildings.

Basing on the guarantee of employment and security, the green space and square are enlarged.

Emphasize and penetrate Yiyang history of bamboo culture by adding it to landscape details.

Comprehensively form an all-roundway green landscape by the principles above .

b. Detailed landscape

Add green space among buildings.

Due to the rapid urban expansion, the previous Yiyang third water plant, which needs to be removed, has been surrounded by downtown. However, residents in Yiyang have deep feelings toward this old water plant, which has served them for 20 years since 1994. So I suppose to retain this water plant for citizens especially for old Yiyang people to recall their memories. But the overall area of the water plant accounts for nearly one fourths of the whole district.

How to retain the old water plant without affecting the planning of new downtown? I adopt to the methods of changing the architectural functions. And new functions should meet the following conditions. To start with, it should be a activity which can benefit citizens’ health. Moreover, the function ought to be matched with the surrounding. Last but not least, It is possible for the previous building change into the new functional building.

Parking lot

Then I found the fact that swimming is helpful for building our bodies, Yiyang is lack of swimming pools, and filtration pool is similar to swimming pool. So I plan to remain partial buildings of the previous water plant and alter its function. 38

[Task of design]

This curriculum design requires us the ability to comprehensively deal with road traffic, square, greenbelt as well as environmental embellishments in urban residence. And the quality of design content and depth as well as drawings ought to be qualified. Meanwhile, basic principle and methods of detailed urban planning should be further mastered.

[Site Analysis]

[Case Analysis]

Characteristic

[Location] With planned construction of Zhixi road, Yangfan road, Xinan road and Huilong road in East, West, South and North respectively, the base is located in HuiLongshan area, Heshan district, Yiyang city, alongside Zhixi river. The Northeast of the base is Zhaifan mountain, the Northwest is Yiyang bulb plant and the west is surrounded by Zhixi river.

My proposal

The quadrangle dwellings is parallel to rivers.

[Analysis of the status quo]

There are bulb plan, provincial tool factory and so on in the base without any prosperous enterprises. Most of them have been abandoned or under collapsing.

The road analysis Beijing Houhai

The main existing buildings within the base are industrial buildings mixed with some residential areas and warehouses. With imperfect service system and poor living environment, the supporting facilities within the region lack behind. With mixed and scattered land use, it lacks public space of appropriate scale. The buildings within this area are mainly residential buildings with low construction standard. The buildings have high density but low separation distance among each building.

[Proposal]

This area is planned to be used as residential area in the comprehensive planning of Yiyang city. Besides, Yiyang has relatively less immigrant population, most of whom are local Hunan people. Apart from factory buildings remained in the base, there are still some waters like streams and ponds. I hope to combine the existing conditions such as life, activities and ideology of Hunan people so as to form a residential area which is suitable for most residents.

Terrain analysis Riverside greenbelt is set vertically to the river. Changsha HsiangRiver

Therefore, I have investigated on Hunan people’s habits, including ideology, diet and activities by questionnaire, interviews and literature reference. And I draw a conclusion of four representative characteristics, which are preference of hot food, square dancing, diaojiao building and patio houses, and culture collision. The next step is to combine the characteristics with existing conditions, basing on the assurance of basic functions such as parking, light, ventilation and so on.

Riverside greenbelt is set both vertically and parallel to the rivers. Courtyard is formed among residential houses, and the scattered house arrangement make the place more vivid.

Texture analysis

In the end, a water-locked residential area with Hunan characteristics and optimized functions, which has indoor planting as well as appropriate public services, is formed.

Kunshan Zhouzhuang

The houses are scattered and forming a unique courtyard space.

[The local feature analysis]

44

1.Hunan people can’t live without hot food

2.Square dance

3.Diaojiao buildings and patio houses

4.Collision and integration of old and new culture

Hunan people are known for eating hot food in China. For Hunan people, apart from taking hot pepper as seasoning for cooking, pepper can be made into chopped pepper, pickled pepper, roasted pepper, white pepper, rice pepper, chilli-sauce, chilli oil and so on.

Square dance is a non-professional performance of dance art performed in public area. Many people use group dance to exercise and entertain themselves. As for Hunan people, there are many original dances created by them, because of their passion for square dance.

The commonly seen buildings in Hunan are diaojiao buildings and patio houses. The diaojiao buildings are built along with rivers and mountains. And patio houses, which is beneficial for ventilation and lighting, are the buildings with internal patio .

With the core concept of Happy China, Hunan Satellite TV has created many legends for ratings, while this modern area is actually a historical area as well, which is full of cultural relics. Take Changsha as an example, it totally discover three tombs in Western Han dynasty.

45

[Design processes]

46

[Aerial view]

According to the comprehensive planning, the floor area ratio of the land should be no more than 1.2 and the building density should no more than 20%.

Open the entrance of the residential area in the roads with less traffic flow.

Form a inside loop for vehicles to serve the whole areas.

Remain and adjust the original waters, in order to form a green corridor and penetrate the green into other building groups.

The buildings near the water can be used as residential buildings, while the rest of it can be used as supporting public facilities, according to the analysis on site values, sight, environment, etc.

Plan the residential buildings and public buildings along with the river.

Rotating residential buildings can maximize the riverside landscape for each building.

In order to ensure the sunlight and ventilation and create a interesting scattered space, the height of buildings should be adjusted.

[Vertical planting]

Sketch of planting in residences.

Since food security accidents, such as smoked pepper with sulphur, are frequently exposed, Hunan people have begun to plant vegetables by themselves on their balcony. Therefore, I extract partial building units, which have sound ventilation and abundant sunlight, for the sake of increasing and optimizing planting space for vegetables. In addition, apart from the assurance of food security, the indoor garden can also add planting experience for family, enhance family relationship as well as provide food materials conveniently.

Sketch of planting in public buildings

[Space for square dance]

Mat formation near residential building

Hunan has bulky teams of square dance and square dance is a good exercise for building up people’s bodies. However, people who dance near the residential building may affect other people’s rest. In the residential building group, I adopt one kind of grass brick which is not convenient for dancing but can create ecological communication space for residents. However, in order to attract dancers to dance on public square, large separated floor, which are smooth and easy for separating teams, is adopted on the public square. And these measures will certainly give residents a quieter living environment.

Mat formation of public square

[Evolution of buildings] The diaojiao building

The diaojiao building is suspended in the air, in order to gain excellent scenery and dry ventilation. The patio house represents Chinese people’s respect for god, lord, heaven and human. Besides, it is beneficial for ventilation, lighting and physical drain. Therefore, I use the concept of diaojiao building and patio house combine with partial riverside buildings and public buildings respectively, which results in an ecological residential area.

Suppose you are drinking coffee with your bosom friends, will it be more comfortable and enjoyable to face the stream as well as vintage factory buildings? And on rainy days, you can also enjoy the quietness, listen to the ticking rain and look at the industrial mark left in the past. The cafe and pavilion reconstructed by factory buildings can recall the industrial memory and are the provider of recreational space for residents.
