SKIN GURU

Bajan Sun Magazine

MAY 2014

By Dr. Andrew Forde

CRP is also known as Gougerot-Carteaud Syndrome. It was first described in 1927 and even though it is said to be rare, it is a common skin condition in the West Indian black population. The condition can affect the face, neck, armpits and the trunk. The forehead, cheeks and the perioral area are most common on the face. On the trunk the favourite areas are the centre of the chest/back and in the love handles. Skin coloured, light grey or black macules (small flat areas) and bumps (papules) join up to form a net like (reticulate) pattern or larger flat (patch) or raised (plaque) areas. CRP is usually asymptomatic but there can be associated itching. The dryness is most commonly noticed after bathing or sweating. Obese individuals with hormonal disturbances like diabetes and thyroid disease or physiological conditions like pregnancy are at risk. There are also reports of family members being affected by the condition. The cells in affected areas multiply faster and also produce more protein called keratin. Yeast, fungi and bacteria have been isolated in affected skin. Unfortunately the real cause of the condition is still unknown. The natural history of the disease ranges from an isolated episode to chronic recurrence. It responds beautifully to low dose antibiotics for two to six weeks. A few patients respond to oral antifungals. There is no specific test for CRP and this accounts for a high percentage of misdiagnosis by non-dermatologists. CRP is often mistaken for fungal infections like “liver spots and eczema.

Black Pudding & Souse a Dish of Ingenious Necessity!!! While the slave owners kept the prime cuts of the hog, the shoulder chops, loin chops, spare ribs, bacon and ham for themselves. The slaves, the blacks, were given specific parts, carved from their butchered pig, the head, feet, tail and the intestines.

Slaves wondered how best to make a dish that blends various parts of their master’s sow. The pig’s head cut it in two parts, ears, tails and sow’s trotters were put in an iron pot with water and salt. When finished cooking it was set aside for the meat to cool, the cooled meat was then cut in slices off the bones into a bowl of pickle, which was made of salt water, lime juice, cucumber, few red peppers diced and garnished with parsley. Souse now in pickle marinates coolly. Black pudding, English name for boudin noir, pig’s blood captured in bowl with vinegar. Grate sweet potatoes into a bowl, add thyme, sweet marjoram, bajan sugar with mixed shallots, and dash of clove powder and blend bloody ingredients to make a mixture. This is then stuffed into the pigs intestines used for the pudding, like rolls of sausage. These are then placed into a boiling pot of water. Sheer necessity created room for ingenuity, Slaves made unwanted pig parts into real soul food. Once a dish for the lowly slave, today the rich and poor all eat, Black Pudding and Souse...

Beauty’s Intricacies By Deborah Ramdin

Black Pudding & Souse Locations Fridays: Tony’s Snack Bar & Restaurant Lot 18 Clapham Park St. Michael

My mantra in life is Success. I measure my success by two rare and real achievements, finding Love and Joy. I believe that once we have love and Joy all success is won. I found a love and Joy in Make-up. However, there was no smooth road to finding my Love; after pursuing lost dreams in Science at Secondary School. I finally switched over to do art in my final year of sixth form, because for very long it was a passion of mine. After I graduated, I went on to university where I am pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Accounts and Finance, which I have found, helps me to grow as a business person. I did not discover my passion for makeup until entering a beauty pageant and being crowned queen. I saw the depths of beauty throughout the journey of the pageant and I believe this is what inspired me to express my art in make-up. Ever since then, contours, eye shapes, lips, cheek bones, Skin tones and Colors excite me. To see the transformation in a person and the elation on their faces, that tells me it was a job well done. As I always say, I was once an artist on canvas but now I have found my new canvas on faces. On entering the Beauty industry, so many opportunities fell into my lap; which lead me to believe this is where I ought to be. So with the help and inspiration of friends and family, I started to build the Make-up business Deborah Ramdin MUA. The mission of my company is to enhance the beauty and confidence of my customers by transforming their appearance through professional artistry. Though it’s still in its infancy, the business has flourished and is making strides towards bigger goals that will take the beauty industry by storm! Thus far, it has been an exciting and intriguing journey and I embrace every opportunity for me and my business to grow.

HOW AUTHENTIC ARE YOU?

By Norma T. Hollis Norma T. Hollis

Have you ever considered how authentic you are? Not just how real you are when you run into someone that you know, but how authentic you are to the person you were born to be? We each come to earth with gifts and talents that prepare us to succeed. Have you retained the authentic gifts and talents you were born with? Have you developed these gifts so that you express them in ways that authentically reveal who you are? Or have you lost your gifts to the institutions that have raised you and conditioned you to societal structure?

America’s Leading Authentic Voice Doctor® Mentor, Transformational Artist ~ Visionary Advocate of the Human Spirit

I have been studying authenticity for most of my life. It started when I was a child and watched the adults around me. Some had retained the joy that my friends and I knew as children but most of the adults seemed to have lost their joy. They were short tempered, always in a hurry, and not readily responsive to the needs of those around them. I wondered what caused happy children to turn into unhappy adults. I later learned that many adults lose their joy due to the demand of earning a living and many earn a living in areas that are not compatible with their authenticity. Later, when I directed child care programs, I met a few adults who were excited about their role in the lives of young children. Yet there were other adults who were only there for the paycheck. I found this to also be true in corporate America when I provided training to middle and senior management teams. I began to see a pattern in people – most were living a less than authentic life and it was expressed in their lack of joy, lack of taking care of themselves, lack of job satisfaction and basically uncomfortable with life in general. Then I began coaching speakers and entrepreneurs to be more successful in life through using their voice. Here too I found that some individuals had a strong sense of their authentic self while others did not. The speakers and entrepreneurs who I found were most successful and joyful were those who were living an authentic life – listening to their inner voice, engaging in activities that were compatible with their personality, and expressing themselves in ways

that allowed them to share themselves with others. So if you desire an authentic life remember these three basic elements to achieving the authenticity that leads to joy:

1. Know Yourself Authenticity begins with self-knowledge. Gain self-knowledge by listening to the inner voice that speaks within and let it guide you to know yourself on a deep level. 2. Be Yourself Authenticity is about being who you were meant to be. It means being consistent in how you present yourself, and the people you surround yourself with. 3. Express Yourself Share your authentic self with the world! Let your authentic nature shine through the work that you do and the way that you communicate with others. Express your authentic voice every chance that you can.

It’s a fake, designed to lure you into typing your name and password so the bad guys can have it. Delete it. If you’re concerned, visit the institution’s Web site in your browser by typing in its address (like Citibank.com) — not by clicking the link in e-mail. * Before you pass on any amazing item you get by e-mail—Obama’s a Muslim, the bubble boy wants greeting cards, the Nieman-Marcus $400 cookie recipe — first check it out at Snopes.com, the world clearinghouse for Internet scams and rumors. * If a blue underlined link shows up in an e-mail message, you can mouse over it without clicking to see what Web site it plans to open. * If you get a message from someone you know that relates a horror story about being mugged in England (and needing you to wire money immediately), delete it. Ainsley M Carter - Bajan Poet I left Barbados behind along with my family and a few friends to further my career in the United Kingdom in September 2000. It was here I found my passion and love for poetry and writing short stories. Many days I would write and jot things down, whenever I felt lonely, sad, or missing my family and friends. The words I etched on paper soon became my story as they detailed my life in someway. Over the years I made friends while living in the UK and would allow a few to peak at my work, most would praise my writing skills and encourage me to have them published. I eventually took their advice and published my first book in September 2010, my masterpiece titled “Poetry A Way Of Life”. I eventually published my second book titled “ A Journey Into The Abyss Of The Mind”

If you, your child or anyone you know, require personal assistance in any of the above areas, then you've come to the right place/person. This course caters to children and adults alike. It's all about you or someone you know understanding, learning and moving forward to achieve their academic goals. Parents see below: 1. Parents are free to select the time/day best for their child. 2. This package is ideal for kids who need that additional push and help with understanding concepts etc. Creative tools (music/games/challenges/ other creative activities) will be used to ensure the child benefits/learns. 3. As we approach exams, the course is expected to intensify, focusing on pass papers, practice tests using exam conditions. Mentoring is also provided at this stage to ensure that the child is well prepared all-round for exam. 4. Should you (parent) require a copy of my CV, please feel free to request such. Upon reviewing my CV, you may see an area that you think your child can also benefit from. Please feel free to inform me of that area which will allow your child to gain even further knowledge/ skills. Contact Information: Raeann Beckles at 1-246-844-7008 or raeann_beckles@yahoo.com
