FROM THE MOUTHS OF VISITORS TO BARBADOS

by Cheryl Corbin

Barbados has thousands of visitors each year and many of them enjoy our beautiful island. There are times however, when the experience is so overwhelming that our guests send us their thoughts and praises. The Mills visited Sept 2012 Wayne & Misty Mills

and

their

first

impressions

were “WOW! What a gorgeous place to escape to and just be free. We are in love with the people, the beaches, the history and even more, the food!”

View of the beach from their apartment

On the first occasion the happy couple stayed at the Hilton and their second visit was hosted by Beach-View Apartments. It was quite encouraging to constantly hear their descriptions of Amazing, Fantastic, Comfortable, and Welcoming, not to mention Brilliant being voiced at every turn: we were flabbergasted. “We loved walking around and taking in all the sites. Mingling with the locals and hearing about the best spots to go to and have a wonderful time. One thing we noticed is that everyone

is always smiling and laughing and being carefree: such a wonderful vibe in Barbados.” Lime Grove was a favorite shopping spot for them and Payne's Bay Beach was referred to as a little slice of heaven. “Most importantly we just soaked up the Bajan sun and stared out and watched the water splash about. We rented a snorkel and got to see amazing fishes and we also had a boat ride where we fed the turtles.” The Mills have visited our pristine shores twice already and we are certain that we will be seeing them again. “ ….. We will continue to come for the rest of our lives. Trust me when I say once you have been, you will be hooked. It’s never ending on the brilliant things you can do while in Barba-

FEATURED BODYBUILDER

AUG 2014

QUANTANO PARRIS Born in St. Vincent to a Barbadian father, Quantano Parris moved to Barbados at the age of 10 where he attended Princess Margaret Secondary school. Standing at 5’10” feet, and weighing 186lbs, Quantano is no amateur bodybuilding competitor, He competed in 2008 after first training and placed 5th. Later in 2010 and 2011, he also competed and placed 2nd in both years.

Growing up his dad told him about famous bodybuilders from the Caribbean who made it in the arena and were recognized world wide. His dad also told him about his granddad who also competed and what he did to make it. Having seen photos of his granddad and eldest uncle, Quantano’s dad told him if he was dedicated and disciplined with a strong work ethic and proper motivation he could do anything he placed his mind to. At an early age Quantano started going with his dad to the gym where he saw how quickly his body responded and wondered if it would have the same effect on him. With this in mind Quantano chose to get into bodybuilding. He officially began training at age 15 and his body began to respond so quickly, that his dad and his friends noticed and encouraged him to take it seriously as they saw the potential in him. As Quantano continued to train seriously, he too saw that he could be a contender in the Bodybuilding arena. In 2008 he decided to enter the School Boy competition. However, two months before the competition he faced an unfortunate event which had him on bed rest for three weeks. Post that, Quantano only trained for a week before the show, lost the weight and conditioning gained through training and because of this he placed 5th. Nonetheless, that competition turned a new leaf for him and changed his life forever. Quantano revamped the way he ate and started working out consistently. Since high school Quantano has worked with Darcy Beckles & Roger Boyce to accomplish his goal and be in a better physical condition. Later in 2010, Quantano competed in the Teenage Competition where he placed 2nd. That night he was told by the president of the Bodybuilding Federation that he was the best improved bodybuilder that year. In 2011 Quantano’s success streak continued and after training with Orlando Blennman, Quantano placed 2nd in the Novice Competition.

Physique Pro Fitness by Jerome "The Trainer" Greenidge Physique Pro Fitness Consultancy (PPFC) is a per sonal tr aining business which was established in the year 1999 and caters to everyone from the professional person to the average housewife. Since the demand for this type of business is high Trainer - Jerome Greenidge sought to differentiate himself from all the other trainers plying their trade. As such, Jerome committed himself to studying the most popular training concepts and testing them on his clients to determine which ones worked most effectively. After a couple years of combining concepts and experimenting, Jerome created his own training style which can be modified to fit any body type. Most of his clients see him on average two or three times a week at their home or office, as his business goes where ever the client is interested in being trained. Needless to say, most of Jerome’s clients train at home. Given his passion to share knowledge, Jerome educates his clients on not only proper nutrition but how to train on their own with minimum equipment, which is always a hit as his clients wouldn't have to further expense themselves.

The service Jerome and by extension PPCF offers covers everything from when to train, target setting and constant assessments to see what works and what is not working.

Over the years Jerome have found that consistency is the main reason people stop training. In response to this, Jerome has devised a strategy which works and works well. The workouts in this strategy take no longer than 5 to 8 minutes, with minimum equipment requirement. What is more is that, the results from this method have been nothing short of outstanding and Jerome’s clients love it. Short intense workouts work great especially when combined with adequate nutrition. More importantly, this method has been such a hit that his clients have encouraged him to do a fitness app which is called the ‘8 Min Burn’, carded to be released August 2014. All in all Jerome ensures that his clients are happy and see results quickly. In his words “it doesn't matter if my clients are vacationing in France or staying in a beach house on the east coast. If they or the general population want a workout or tips on everything from how to acquire muscle, lose weight or get stronger, they can do so by visiting this facebook link: http://www.facebook.com/ provenphysique.”

Beauty’s Intricacies KISSABLES

By Deborah Ramdin

My Lips are my most attractive facial feature; I have full lips and no matter what I do they stand out. Instinctively, I try to take care of my best asset. Let’s delve into a discussion on lip care, choosing your lip colour and how to actually achieve a beautifully lined and coloured lip! Lip care Almost everyone at some point has problems with preventing their lips from drying or becoming chapped and many times we do not realize that it is important to exfoliate the lips. More often than not, exfoliation is limited to the face; before applying moisture it is important to remove the layers of dead skin, especially if you have dried or chapped lips. “Exfoliation is key, to stimulating cell growth because it promotes proper blood circulation and sloughs away dead skin cells.” An easy way to exfoliate is to place some petroleum jelly on a tooth brush with soft straight bristles and rub in circular motions for about five minutes. This is simple and easy and you can leave the petroleum jelly on the lips to add moisture. Generally, Lip balms are used to add moisture to the lips. But, there are some natural products to use for dry or chapped lips. These include honey, coconut oil or almond oil. Applying these to the lips daily help to repair and prevent drying of the lips.

also works as a base. You can also make your lips look fuller by outlining just outside your natural lip line. Always use lip liner of the same shade as your lipstick. Next, you apply the lipstick or colour stay. You can use a brush, your finger or apply straight from the tube. Note, you always start applying at the centre of your lips and move outwards to the corners. Blot the lipstick in order to avoid getting it onto your teeth; you can use a tissue paper between your lips to absorb the excess color. Apply a second layer and blot again. Finally, add a gloss; it gives the lips a fuller look and adds shine to your lips. Apply at the centre of the lips and smudge to make your lips voluminous.

Choosing your colours Complexion has a lot to do with choosing the right colour for your lips. I love nude lips but sometimes I jazz it up with colour. For complexions in my range and lighter soft peaches, pinks, some reds, and nudes work very nicely. Warmer colours are suited for darker skin. Coppers, Burgundy, some reds and sometimes even gold, works very nicely for darker complexions. Lighter colours tend to look ashy on darker skin and darker colours tend to make people with lighter complexions appear older. What is fun to note is Pinks and Nude can be used across the board. Here’s a little table I found that should be a little more enlightening when trying to choose a good lip colour.

Good brands to check out include: MAC Maybelline Revlon NYX

Moisturize the lips by applying your lip balm. Next, add a lip primer or use your foundation as an inexpensive primer and set with powder; your lipstick or lip gloss will last longer because it has something to stick to. INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR E.M. ADAMS : CHATTING WITH BAJANSUN ABOUT HER FIRST EVER BOOK – ADEGOR:THE ONE WHO SURVIVED by Cher Corbin Tell us a little about yourself and your family. I was born in St. Vincent and the Grenadines but spent all my adult life in Barbados. I went to a Christian school in St.

Vincent, Emmanuel High School which helped to shape my spirituality and my connection to the divine Creator. When I moved to Barbados I went back to school and acquired my certificates. At present I am pursuing an online writers’ course in fiction and correspondence. I have three kids- two sons and one daughter, who I live for and love endlessly. They are partly the reason for me doing this. I want them to know and understand clearly that they can live their reality. It is never too late to dream and aspire, but in all that they do they should be a part of the paradigm shift to change the world for the better. How did you get into writing? When did you realize that it was a passion? I started writing at about the age of ten and loved it. At the end of term at my school there were always plays and programs and I wrote stories for them and my passion for writing was born. I have no formal training, I just write from my heart. Where do you get your ideas? Are all the stories fictional?

My ideas come from any and everything … from a lady simply walking on the side of the road to a worldwide disaster. A drunk on the street corner, a woman in despair: all in all everyday living that goes on around me is where I get my ideas. No, the stories are not fictional. But, then again, when you take a true story and add a falsehood, like the changing of the name, place etc the story then becomes fictional right? (laughs) . However, I love to create fictional stories … my imagination runs wild … and I love that feeling.

Where do you do your writing? In the park, on the bus, on the beach or most times in my room listening to instrumental music. I love to watch people going about their everyday lives, I get such inspiration. There was a time when I was trying to put into words what my friend would have experienced because of the abusive situation, and I ended up at another friend’s house in her yard which houses a bird sanctuary, it was just freeing to sit and be soothed by nature.

AUG 2014

Another valuable point is that some of the victims are in situations where they don’t work and have to depend on the significant other, who is the bread winner in the home. As much as people would sympathize, they are not going to take that person in and help them to find their footing. What we need to be aware of is that both men and women are victims of this whole stigma. A boy child might have grown up in a home where violence were present and that would be his way of dealing with what he saw as a child. That anger he feels and the emotions he holds inside might just take one incident for that individual to snap and thus an abuser is born.

Now, about ADEGOR, what inspired you to write the book in the first place?

How long did it take to write the anthology and how many poems are in it? Which two are your favourites?

I have a ministry, “Girlfriend’s Café” and I come into contact with women in and around the group where many of their stories ring the same. Abuse is not new, but it is something that we are still afraid to address in some circles. What inspired me to write this book was an incident in April of 2007 that took the life of my best friend from school days. The fact that she had to die at the hand of abuse still haunts me; this book is a way of healing for me.

Actually these are pieces that I would have written over a two year span, as I came into contact with persons, who shared their pain with me. There are twenty four pieces in the anthology, all of them are my favourites of course but there are two that stands out.

What are the responses you have been getting about ADEGOR? It is well received amongst persons that know I write; many have expressed their desire to read the book and some are saying it is long overdue. The responses have been really positive. Tell us some more about ADEGOR – the title, the cover, the inspiration and your writing style.

The first one is about a woman who is a professional. She is smart, she seems to love life but she lives behinds a mask of pretense, and that is a problem in our society we are afraid to be ourselves, to speak out, and we die inside daily at the end of it all, we live to please people at the expense of our health, our sanity and our lives.

The second one is the final poem in the book: it speaks about overcoming and that is the message I want to send out to everyone who is, has or would experience some form of abuse. The key to surviving is to overcome and walk away with your life and sanity intact.

The name ADEGOR in Yoruba, means surviving ones or the ones who survived. It grew on me the instant I heard of it. The name also has personal meaning for me. All the entries are done in free verse, so there is just a natural flow to everything. The cover portrays a woman who has overcome, yes you can see the physical scars, but her demeanor is one of contemplation - yes I went through it all but I overcame. The artwork is by Cher Corbin and the Graphic Design by DeOlivere Originals. My inspiration for this particular project came from knowing that the words on the pages of this book could make a difference in someone’s life; to help someone to heal from whatever their circumstance might be or recognize the signs of any forms of abuse. These poems are poignant now at a time when violence against women seems to be on the rise – what are your thoughts on this? I am of the opinion that our society is still way behind in terms of dealing with violence against women. For instance, if a woman is known to be a victim of abuse, sometimes she is looked upon as weak, it’s like she can’t be trusted to make the right decisions. How could she not have seen that something like this could happen?

PYOGENIC GRANULOMA A pyogenic granuloma is an extremely common vascular growth that presents as a shiny red mass. It affects both sexes and occurs mostly in children and young adults but may present at any time. It usually results from trauma but most patients have no recollection of the injury. Lesions start as a small red, brownish-red dot and grows rapidly over a period of a few days to weeks. It develops into a red or purple moist nodule, which can grow up to 2 cm in size. Recurrent bleeding is a characteristic and sometimes the whole lesion may fall off and grow back. Pyogenic granulomas commonly occur on the fingers, around the nails, on the face and in the scalp. There are several methods available to treat pyogenic Granulomas. Curettage and electrocautery (scraping and electrical burning) is an efficient method used by dermatologists. Excision with a scalpel and closure of the wound with stitches is also available. This leaves a small scar. Cryotherapy (freezing with dry ice) can be used for small lesions. Chemical cauterisation with a silver nitrate stick. Laser surgery

Preventing Loneliness Among Bajan Elderly Today Is As Important As Minimizing Chronic Illnesses By Fay Parris Ever heard it said someone died from loneliness? This is supported by medical research which has found that lonely elderly persons who do not receive visitors at least once a week, are more likely to experience more chronic illnesses and an increase in their use of health and social care services. These illnesses include high blood pressure, depression, arthritis, senior disability, cardiovascular disease, dementia and glaucoma. The vulnerability to loneliness is linked to poor family relations, loss of friends and family, decreased ability to move around and/ or inadequate income. The mandate to decrease loneliness among Bajan elderly lies on all Barbadians and provides opportunities for churches, and volunteer groups to assist the government entities in maintaining their wellbeing. As our nation ages, it urges entrepreneurs to create innovative and alluring packages to draw both local and visiting elderly towards activities which can alleviate the loneliness epidemic. Some of these ideas include: 

One-to-one activities such as befriending and visiting elderly persons in their own homes at least once a week, shopping expeditions, going to a restaurant, promoting the use of skype and daily 5 minute telephone calls.



Group activities such as line dancing, ballroom dancing, daily exercise, karaoke, movies, and family get togethers.



Entrepreneur activities such as day care centres, recreational centres, island tours, sports competitions, sharing a hobby, adopt a pet, creating assisted or independent living facilities and villages.

and intrigued by the artistry and performances by the actors. It was a defining moment for Vincent M. Ward, and he instantly knew his passion for acting had come alive! He had no training or experience, but he didn’t let that stop him. In fact, that next week, Vincent auditioned for his first play. Vincent was surprised and overjoyed when he was notified that he had been chosen as a cast member of a touring company of actors in Columbus, OH. The troupe performed several educational and diverse plays such as “Black Man Rising”, “The Ones Who Shoot the Guns”, “Young Black Men are Dying” and “No One Seems to Care.”

Vincent M. Ward was born on January 27, 1971 in Dayton, Ohio. Growing up, Vincent participated in basketball, football, and baseball. Given his competitive nature, he excelled in all of these sports, but Vincent’s desire to be great meant that he would have to choose one. He chose basketball, which he still plays to this very day. In his four years of high school, Vincent is the first and, so far, the only player on the varsity basketball team selected to start in each game spanning the four years of high school. The high school’s basketball team won All-City First Team, All-City GMVC First Team and the news about the team mentioned Vincent M. Ward as one of the best basketball players in Ohio! Vincent decided it was a good time to pursue another dream he had, to dance. He paired up with his childhood friend, Broderick Dumas, whom they called “Night”, and the two of them went on to enter and win numerous dance contests. They formed a dance duo and called themselves “Night and Day” a.k.a. The Twin Towers, (since “Night” stood 6’5” and Vincent stood 6’4”). The dynamic duo was approached by many professional entertainers to perform. Night and Day signed with Dr. Ease and the Ease Town Posse, and they toured with such groups as Public Enemy MC Light, X-Clan, MC Hammer, Heavy D and The Boys and others. Eventually, Vincent decided to sign with the “Slam Syndicate” which led him to Fort Walton Beach, Florida. After a year in Florida, Vincent decided to return to school. He enrolled in South-Suburban College in Chicago, Ill, where he was granted a basketball scholarship. With 2 ½ years of college under his belt, and a new family, Vincent decided to return to Dayton. Never giving up on his dream to entertain, he began to enter modeling contests where he was awarded titles, “Ebony Man of the Year” and “Sexiest Man of the Year.” 28 Vincent attended a local play. He was impressed One evening,

Vincent M. Ward has been successful in all of his endeavors, and the saying “The best is yet to come” has never been more relevant as he now pursues new dreams and new roles. His dream to act has brought him the greatest role yet in his role as Oscar in the sensational new series on Cable TV, “The Walking Dead!” Now the world will follow as Vincent M. Ward makes his way to the top!.. The 6’4 Ward stands out not only with his height, but the characters he brings to life on stage in such plays as Played By Life Rules, The Conversation, The Flip Side, Men Cry Too, Secrets or a demanding wife beater in Through the Storm, a cold hearted pimp in A Sugga Daddy Aint Always Sweet, a ruthless drug dealer in Laurence Fishburns Riff Raff, or slick talking hustler in Don B. Welch. “My Brothers Keeper” and The Bachelorette Party or scaring us as the devil in Lord There’s A Stranger in My House, Ward shows his athletic side playing the boxer Calvin “Savage” James in Savage World, and showing softer side as a Pastor and loving husband in Leave the 99 and The Battle is Not Yours… This talented actor also has co -starred Middle Man, Whitney, Army Wives, General Hospital, Wilfred, Pysch, Body Of Proof, Gary Unmarried, Dollhouse, The Game, Girlfriends, Unhitched, Head Cases, C.S.I, The Bold and the Beautiful, Robbery Homicide, Viva Laughlin, CSI Miami, Big Shots, Desperate Housewives, Days Of Our Lives, The Wire and recurring on Everybody Hates Chris, The Walking Dead, Hot In Cleveland and The Starter Wife as Bo or guest starring on Knight Rider as Eddie and True Blood as Hollis. No stranger to the big screen Vincent also has supporting rolls in Bringing down the House, Mirror Mirror, Live-Evil, Oceans 11, “Traffic”.. And straight to video movies as Three Can Play That Game, 4 Play, A Beautiful Soul, Cordially Invited, Robbin in the Hood, Confessions of a Thug, All Lies on Me and Who Killed Bishop Brown? With God on his side Ward feels there is nothing he can’t achieve in this world. Bitten by the writing bug he also plans on releasing his own projects such as, A Bad Boys Tale of Choosing Heaven or Hell (play), Choose Your Weapon (movie), Homeless in L.A (documentary), The Step Daddy (horror film), Until Death Did Us Apart (movie), and Hollywood To Your Hood (reality cooking show).

In his own words… How long have you been acting? I’ve been acting for 16 years...I started back in Columbus, Ohio in 1998 doing plays with Living the Dream theater...From there I started doing more plays and then I auditioned for an independent film called A Symbol of Love in which I had the lead role. I continued doing more plays until I auditioned for the movie TRAFFIC that starred Michael Douglas and a host of other big stars. After that I moved back to my hometown of Dayton, Ohio with my parents and saved my money to move to Los Angeles to pursue a career I’ve never taken classes for but found a love and passion for in 2000. What inspired you to become an actor? Watching my 1st play back in 1998 inspired me. I always say acting picked me, I didn’t pick it...I watched that play and said to myself I can do that and I’ve been doing it ever since 16 years old. The hardest thing about this career is being patient and not giving up, of course having tough skin and FAITH as well. What inspired Walking Dead? I never knew what The Walking Dead show was and when they said it was about zombies, I said whose watching tv about zombies. Well 20 million people a week are watching it...lol... I just looked at it like it was another audition and I booked the part...I’m glad I did because I’ve gained a lot of supporters (not fans) I don’t like calling people fans. I’ve also gotten a chance to go to different countries doing the conventions. My biggest goal that I’m trying to accomplish from the

My connection with Barbados comes from my beautiful agent Sabrina Wilkinson who is from there and when “The Chill Spot” traveling show came up she suggested that Barbados should be the 1st place to go...So Sabrina made a lot of calls and that’s how we connected with Lorretta Skeet and Rahmat John Pierre over at CMC network. Hopefully we can bring the islands to the states and showcase more of the beautiful places Barbados has to offer, for more tourists to come visit. A BANANA A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR by worldobserveronline Bananas contain three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes. But, energy isn’t the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet. DEPRESSION According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier. PMS Forget the pills – eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood. ANEMIA High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia. BLOOD PRESSURE This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure so much so, that the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke. BRAIN POWER 200 students at a Twickenham school (England) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert. CONSTIPATION High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives. HANGOVERS One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milk-

shake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system. HEARTBURN Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief. MORNING SICKNESS Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness. MOSQUITO BITES Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation. NERVES Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system. Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady. ULCERS The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach. TEMPERATURE CONTROL Many other cultures see bananas as a ‘cooling’ fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature. So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has FOUR TIMES the protein, TWICE the carbohydrate, THREE TIMES the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals.. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around. So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say; ‘A BANANA a day keeps the doctor away!’

“Got To Be REAL!!!” By Dr. Anita Davis-DeFoe

Years ago, singer Cheryl Lynn sang about it and it went something like this, “What you find-ah, What you feel now, What you know-to be real.” In today’s world with all of its stereotypes, biases, dubious deception, and game playing, far too many people have lost touch with their true selves. Hidden somewhere beneath the bling, designer clothes and other American trappings of unhealthy materialism are real people; real people filled with infinite hopes, achievable dreams, human frailties, but more importantly personal strength and fortitude. It is time for all of us to take off our masks, step from behind the curtains, and allow our true personalities, our real selves to divinely shine. So many of us worry that if we reveal our genuine personas that others will not embrace us or that people will openly ostracize us. So many of us fear that if we come to the aid of another, our blessings and rewards will be diminished; what a sad attitude to embrace. Without question, this is so far from the truth, more so that any of us could begin to imagine. For “the real” is that until you choose to be uniquely “you”, your ability to effectively relate to others and uplift yourself is impaired, severely comprised. Until you seek to help someone else, your own abundant treasures will not be mystically released. When we get caught up in pretense and perpetrations, over time we cease to know ourselves and we soon become strangers to those who once knew us well. When we choose to cloak our personalities behind walls of claimed self-doubt and self-hatred, spiritual and mental emptiness overtake us and unquenchable longing dominates our daily existence, often going unchecked until it enslaves us in unfamiliar territory. And so it begins, this downward spiral to the land of discontent and discouragement. The time has come for people of color to get real, that is consciously choose Righteous, Earnest, Authentic, Living; simply put, living a life that is purposeful, a life that taps into your wellspring of potential, a life that has personal meaning for YOU. To my brothers and sisters of African descent, no matter where we live, no matter the cultural nuances you have chosen to claim as your own, our survival now dictates that we must come together, unite as a global force in order to uplift and support one another. It does not really matter that you might live in the United States, Europe, Canada, the Caribbean, or South Africa. For all of us, our roots can be traced back to Mother Africa. The slave ships with the ancestors crammed aboard merely stopped from port to port, clandestinely selling this precious human cargo as though they were fish or fowl. While the sea, time and distance may separate us; these are but minor inconveniences, because no matter where we call home, people of African descent find ourselves struggling right where we are. 32

Dr. Anita Davis-DeFoe Author. Thought Leader. Social Entrepreneur, Organization and Leadership Development Solutionist The Chieftaincy Ceremony. Dr. Anita, second from the left, being named the first woman Chief in Akwa Ibom State Nigeria because of her global human development and humanitarian work with women in the village. She was named Adiaha Unwana Itam 1, (Daughter of Light In Itam Clan)

In today’s turbulent world, inequities still flourish unchecked, and it is going to take the collective efforts of all of us to not only positively impact current conditions, but even more importantly, to elevate quality of life standards for future generations. When one stops to think about the fortitude, ingenuity and personal strength exhibited by our ancestral mothers and fathers, even in the face of our greatest obstacles, we have far more resources and choices at our fingertips than they ever had. Our ancestors epitomized a fountain of survival, nurturing and visionary creativity that they passed on to us, if we choose to acknowledge its presence. In the midst of their struggles, a fierce sense of pride, a commitment to family and friends, and a connection to spirit helped them to weather the most vicious life storms. They made a way out of no way, they held onto their dignities when others attempted to assault it, and they remained people of beauty and grace in the face of what oftentimes appeared to be invincible odds. So you see, we cannot allow temporary setbacks, disappointment or betrayal hold us back because each of us is being uplifted on the wings of our ancestors. Refuse to stop dreaming, soaring and searching for your own pathway to inner peace because the spirits of our ancestors will always help us to overcome. Choose not to allow political injustice, blatant discrimination or limited resources assail your divine soul. Together, we all must begin anew to honor our lives and our rich legacies. We must move beyond discussing how we can work together to actually doing the work. Jointly, we must remember that the only place that success comes before work is in the dictionary, and that the best way to murder opportunity is by killing time. The time has indeed come for us personally and collectively to be real, to unite in quest of our innermost hopes, dreams and aspirations. This transformation awaits our arrival. Will you choose to journey? Will you decide to get REAL about your life?

DOMESTIC & ABUSE

By Skye Murray

Domestic violence and abuse does not discriminate. It happens among heterosexual and normal couples, families and in same-sex partnerships. Domestic violence can be defined as a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over a relative or a partner. Yet this problem is often overlooked, excused or denied. This happens especially when it escalates to physical, sexual, emotional, economic, psychological actions or threats of actions that can influence others. Domestic Violence includes any behavior that frightens, intimidate, terrorize, manipulate, hurt, humiliate, blame, injure or wound someone. Domestic violence can happen to anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender. It can happen to couples who are married, living together or who are dating. No one should live in fear of the person they love! Emotionally abusive relationship – does your family, friend or partner:

Prevent you from calling police or seeking medical attention? Hurt your children? Use physical force in sexual situations? Sexually abusive relationship: does your family, friend or partner: View women as objects and believe in rigid gender roles? Accuse you of cheating or appear jealous of your outside relationships? Want you to dress in a sexual way? Insult you in sexual ways or calls you sexual names? Ever forced or manipulate you into to having sex or performing sexual acts? Hold you down during sex? Demand sex when you were sick, tired or after beating you? Hurt you with weapons or objects during sex? Involve other people in sexual activities with you? Ignore your feelings regarding sex? Economic or financial abuse: A subtle form of emotional abuse.

Call you names, insult you or continually criticizes you? Not trust you and acts jealous or possessive? Try to isolate you from family or friends? Monitor where you go, who you call and who you spend time with? Not want you to work? Control finances or refuses to share money? Punish you by withholding affection? Expect you to ask permission? Threaten to hurt you, the children, your family or your pets? Humiliate you in any way?

Remember, an abuser’s goal is to control you, and he or she will frequently use money to do so. Economic or financial abuse includes:

WHEN OUR

IS BAD By Denise J Charles

We all know that deep love and intimacy seal the deal when it comes to longevity and commitment in a relationship. We also know that relationships suffer from a number of negative issues including poor communication, inattention, infidelity, abuse, boredom and this list can go on. What happens, however, when the sex is really bad? Many individuals may not mind complaining about a cheating, abusive or disloyal spouse but how many of us want to complain about bad sex? On a good day, many of us adults who do have sex behave as if we don't and even for those of us who do, admitting that we're having problems in this area is akin to acknowledging some type of adult failure; or so we think. I was made very aware of this sexual disconnect among adults only too recently. While promoting my book "How To Have Mind Blowing Sex Without Losing Your Brain" it was amusing to note the embarrassed stares, self-conscious giggles or incredulous glances away from the book’s title by a number of adults passing by. This of course included married couples. It was obvious that in spite of our society’s seeming openness about sex, many adults are still uncomfortable confronting their own sexuality. If some of us remain so deeply embarrassed by sex, how then do we navigate the turbulent waters of a sexual relationship where the sex is bad with a capital B? Do some of us even know what bad sex is? Are we even remotely in touch with our own sexual needs and desires? Are we informed by good sexuality education or are we still

operating at the level of sexual myths and conjecture? If we're to specifically improve the quality of our sexual relationship and if we're to enhance the overall quality of our relationship with our spouse, then honest communication about the state of our sex is imperative. One of the complexities of relationships is that although we can have a very loving partner who meets our needs in several ways, that individual can still be pretty lousy in the sack. When It comes down to it. However, when we're in love and our heart is in the right place, great sex is not something we want to experience with someone else; we want to experience it with the one we have committed to. How then can we move our sex from bad to good? 1. Clarify what we want: knowing what we're looking for in our sexual relationship is the first step on the journey towards ridding ourselves of bad sex. This means being in-tuned with our own bodies, including our sexual needs and preferences. If we're holding residual shame and embarrassment about how our body looks, if we've never looked at our genitals and remain clueless about our own pleasure centres, then chances are, we're in no position to articulate our desires. Being in-tuned sexually therefore involves acknowledging and accepting our sexuality. This can strengthen our sexual confidence and reduce the sense of trepidation which can keep us silent in the face of dissatisfaction.

Karaoke Nights 2. Communicate clearly but sensitively: Acknowledging our own needs can embolden us to share what is necessary with our partner. Communication in this area should not be designed to humiliate, thereby fostering a sense of inadequacy. We want our guy to know that satisfying us is within his reach and that together, we can learn to enrich our sexual experience for the benefit of us both. If for example, the male partner is plagued with premature ejaculation, working together to overcome this challenge can enhance the quality of sex for both individuals. Communication should also seek to affirm the positive aspects of the relationship first, before zeroing in on the inadequacies. We should never seek to convey a sense of hopelessness. 3. Release Inhibitions: Sometimes our sex is bad because we're too uptight; we haven't learnt the fine art of surrendering to the moment. Our inhibitions and skewed expectations can keep us locked into a zone of performance-anxiety which makes our intimate time with our partner both stilted and burdensome. Understanding that our sexual success is not one-sided but demands our own participation and cooperation can be a significant step in the right direction. This can release the burden of responsibility we as women can sometimes place on our spouse to "give" us an orgasm and encourages us to “own” our sexual pleasure. A more participatory approach can add some much needed zest to our love life, opening it up to exciting experimentation, which in turn has the potential to improve its overall quality. Small Business Tips- Interview Techniques for Effective Hiring: By Lauren Simonds

Stop wasting time and money hiring the wrong people. It’s time to improve your interviewing skills.

Hiring is a risky business given that so much of your company’s success rides on tapping the right people for the job. Interviewing is really more art than science and, all-too-often, job candidates who look good on paper and ace the interview process completely choke once they actually get the job. Bad hires are more than an inconvenience: they’re expensive. According to research from CareerBuilder, 41 percent of companies say that a bad hire costs them at least $25,000. How can you better your chances of making a good hire? In an article on CIO Insight, Dennis McCafferty culls interviewing tips from “The Winning Manager’s Playbook: “6 Practices Every Manager Needs to Succeed” (Career Press), by John Cioffi and Ken Willig. These tips may help you and your managers to hone your interviewing skills and improve the chances of choosing the best people for the job. Before you begin the interview, have candidates sit near some of your employees for 10 or 15 minutes. Do they interact with their potential future coworkers, and if so, how? Their behavior can give you insight on their personalities and show how they may or may not fit with your office culture. It often helps to gauge candidates’ powers of observation and perception. If they’ve interviewed with others in your company, ask about their impressions of those people. Are they accurate? Ideally, an interview should be a two-way exploration so that both parties can determine whether the candidate is a good fit for the job and the company. Look for candidates who ask questions about you to find common interests or shared values..

Remember, you can glean a lot of important insight into how someone thinks and relates to others by asking questions that don’t directly relate to the job at hand. For example, ask candidates what they do for fun. This can help you understand whether they look for creative or competitive activities. Have they ever won a contest? Again, it doesn’t have to be workrelated; ask them what it was and how they earned it. Your interview shouldn’t consist of simply checking off a list of job requirements. You want to see the person behind the resume. Which candidates think clearly? Pay attention to whether they dig deeper for details. Do they listen well and retain knowledge? Ask them to summarize information you described earlier in the interview. Finally, ask candidates to describe their very first job and how they got it. If they got a job when they were young to earn spending money or to pay for school, it’s a sign that they developed a strong work ethic early in life. FEATURED BARTENDER

Debra Sharon Stoute nee Bannister was born and bred in Goodland, St. Michael. She was exposed to hard work from an early age through her maternal grandparents and more specifically her paternal grandfather. Both maternal grandparents were actively involved in agriculture and paternal grandfather being a pastry chef, which as she states exposed her to sectors of the Hospitality Industry. Her grandfather was a jack of all trades and a master of none. But, more interestingly he was a drinker. As she exclaims, after a hard day's work he would take a break with some of his colleagues (who were also involved in agriculture) to 'fire a rum' and slam a domino. Exposed to a bit of the rum shop culture from at home, she had no idea that being privy to this daily ritual would have been the first spark to her later interest in the idea of mixing drinks. You see, she was never interested in becoming a bartender. Her interest was to become a pastry chef like her father and grandfather. Her exposure to bartending was just by chance. It was sometime back in 1991/92 when a childhood friend of hers was visiting from the States and invited her out to the After Dark bar, that the interest in bartending was sparked. From assisting in gathering bottles that night to landing a job at the same bar, Debra’s introduction to the bartending arena begun. However, her career as a bartender was short lived as her interest was really in hospitality, more so as a pastry chef than a bartender. But, due to life’s events and family commitments that too changed. It was not until 2005 when Debra landed a job at Hilton Barbados as a casual waitress in the Banquet Department, where she got the opportunity to utilize her bartending skills. Being the only one willing to serve the Champagne from a 15L bottle, which had to be carried and served on your shoulders at the Official Opening Ceremony of the Hotel Debra’s connection to bartending strengthened. With time and experience, Debra’s interest in bartending grew and she became a member of the Caribbean Mixology Guild which was formed in 2008. By joining the CMG Debra was able to take advantage of the opportunity to keep up with the current trends, techniques of bartending as well as becoming more familiar with the vast types of alcohol and spirits; their manufacturing process, and how to ‘can’ them effectively to create and make a variety of cocktails and drinks. As Food and Beverage assistant at Hilton Barbados, Debra gained the highest scores in a competition held in house beating her fellow team mates, including two bartenders, with her creation of Mount Gay Surreal. This opened her eyes to the possibilities of bartending and thus paved the way to her entry into the Master Mix Competition. Bridging the past with the present, Debra credits her ideas for her cocktails to her grandparents who provided the resources and influences from their involvement in agriculture and baking. This gave her the edge in the competition as a non-bartender to rise above the more experienced and professional 40 bartenders to placing third in the finals on January 04th 2014.

RUM SHOP TALK So many shops from so many parishes, and they all have a new and interesting story to tell. In Barbados it is the rum shops that provide a personal atmosphere. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet many wonderful people in all of these places. The Rum Shop, an institution of village life, much in evidence in present society today should be re-created as part of the Heritage celebrations. Why? As society develops institutions are created to service the needs of the community, the rum shop is one such pivotal institution for our society. The Rum Shop served as a meeting point for society’s more colorful members. The Rum Shop is often seen as common ground, where people from all walks of life could meet and feel the pulse of society, exchange ideas and refresh themselves.

dotting the streets and roadsides of the island’s towns and villages. The rum shop is a local institution. Ordering Rum: To get the attention of the proprietor, you have to slam your money on the counter and demand what you want. Quart: Those with means order a quart to be taken home. Flask: For the less well off, a flask is a small, flat bottle containing 35-40% proof that four can share in one round with a chaser. Pitie, Nip or Mix: The smaller ‘Nip’ or a ‘Mix’ is for three. The ‘Half nip’ is shared between two friends. The ‘Mix’ is a deceptively sweet combination of Falernum (a sweet rum liquor from Barbados) and rum. ‘Anba Contwè’, or ‘Under-the-Counter’ is a secret brew of herbs steeped in alcohol with supposed aphrodisiac qualities. Shot: A ‘Shot’ is an individual amount of strong rum, served in a small glass that is tossed down the throat.

Some rum shops double as little grocery stores, but most are small, individual establishments. They are everywhere,

Disappointed by what friends and family did or didn’t do?

Challenge #3

Frustrated with your money situation?

Confidence – Living with unshakable grounding and faith

Challenged by weight or other health issues?

It may be hard for you to walk with a level of grounding that is unshakable. Authentic Joy means having a level of confidence and belief that no matter what, all things will work out. You have been taught to put faith in tangible things however that is not the secret to living a life of JOY. There’s a different level of confidence you will live with when you unlock the secrets found in the Ultimate JOY Prescription.

JOY IS ONE OF THE MOST PLEASURABLE FEELINGS YOU CAN EXPERIENCE Do you feel joy in your life or are you struggling with one challenge or another?

Seeking better relationships? Uninspired? Stressed?

THE SECRET TO OVERCOMING CHALLENGE AND FINDING JOY

Confused? If any of these sound like you then it’s time for you to shed these feelings and grab the hopeful feeling of JOY that is available to you. THE CHALLENGE OF FINDING JOY IN YOUR LIFE Maybe you have been looking for joy. Maybe you have searched many places and talked to many people. Maybe you have spent hundreds or even thousands of dollars seeking the ultimate sense of JOY in your life. But still, authentic joy may be elusive to you. Here are some of the reasons that your search for joy has been challenging: Challenge #1 Clarity – Understanding what JOY means to YOU

Many think JOY lies outside of themselves and are very surprised to learn that the secret to joy lies within. Looking outside only results in feelings of disappointment and emptiness. When you look outside you expect other people to provide happiness and joy for you. But, the secret to removing the disappointment and emptiness and finding joy in your life is inside. It’s about knowing who you are and it’s called authenticity. Authenticity means connecting with and being true to yourself. Authenticity leads to authentic joy and authentic joy fills the emptiness, removes disappointment, brings clarity, gives confirmation and is the foundation for unshakable confidence. This is called JOY! EMBRACE AUTHENTIC JOY FOR YOURSELF

So many people influence your view of life. It starts with parents and continues through teachers, preachers, family, friends, co-workers, television, billboards, social media and so, so much more. You have to ask yourself whether you define joy by your definition or the definitions you have been taught by others. Authentic joy comes from having clarity about what truly makes you happy.

You can claim authentic JOY for yourself. No matter what you are going through or how you are feeling, it is possible for you to embrace joy in your life. You just need a prescription that gives you a plan to find, live and share JOY. Other people have removed their fear and confusion and replaced them with confidence and joy. You can too. You just need to know what to do. That’s why you need the Ultimate JOY Prescription.

A Short History of Windows An operating system is the collection of software that controls how the computer works. If you have a PC or IBM format computer chances are pretty good that you are running a Windows Operating System from a company called Microsoft. Windows Operating Systems have been around since “th's and you should be familiar with some of the names and chronology of their development. On the right is a diagram showing the basic development of the Windows operating system from 1990 to 2013. The most recent Windows operating system has the unique feature of being designed to run on desktop computers, laptops, tablets (Microsoft Surface) and even smart phones. This concept could have many advantages in a technology world where the proliferation of different devices and operating systems can seem overwhelming. Unfortunately, this has required a fundamental shift in the user experience which resulted in a difficult backlash from many consumers. The result has been, "the biggest product U-turn since New Coke" and the release in late 2013 of Windows 8.1. You can watch a summary of the newest operating system from CNET News featuring Steve Ballmer.

The coucou is stirred continuously with a coucou stick (a long stick which resembles a small replica of a cricket bat). It has to be stirred vigorously to ensure all lumps are out so that you can have a smooth, fluffy meal. However, if you run into difficulties when cooking it, add more okra water if the cornmeal gets too tough. If it is too soft allow it to continue cooking until the right texture is reached. Traditionally coucou was served in an oval form. To obtain this shape it was placed in a round enamel bowl or in a calabash shell. Calabash is a large ball shape fruit of a tropical American tree. It has to be eaten while hot. But, be cautious because it can burn you! Breadfruit, yam and green bananas which are grown locally in Barbados can also be used to make coucou. Barbados was called the ‘land of flying fish’ because of the plentiful amount of flying fish found in Barbados’ waters and now the flying fish is Barbados’ national fish. Its symbol is on our coins, in artwork and is part of the official logo of the Barbados Tourism Authority. In addition, the Barbados Coat of Arms shows a pelican and dolphin, with the dolphin representing the flying fish. The flying fish got its name not because it actually flies but because this fish uses its fins to propel itself when moving through the waters. This is particularly useful when flying fish are trying to get away from predators. The flying fish is one of Barbados’ most desirable delicacies. Where ever you would find Barbados’ nightlife e.g. Oistins, or Baxters Road; you are sure to find this fish. Ranked No. 3 on National Geographic’s Top 10 National Dishes Described as: “a polenta-like cornmeal and okra porridge, coo-coo pairs perfectly with flying fish – once abundant but now overfished and scarce – which is either steamed with lime juice, spices, and vegetables or fried and served with a spicy sauce.” Let’s face it, besides the good taste of coucou, here’s one more reason why we should be always proud of our national dish.

POETS Isis Blu If my palms aren't sweaty and I'm not shaking I'm not passionate about it plain and simple. I look the way I feel my face says it all. My smile is....well you would have to see it one of the many times it graces my face in a day . I am a child at heart which I love but I'm also very perceptive and that shows in my use of metaphoric imagery. My poetry to me is: " Energy through Imagery that causes you to Feel..."

Mariposa A Writer, Poet, Performer. She uses her pen to tease with her blend of erotic, sensual and provocative flavors. Mariposa is a poet, writer of short stories and spoken word artiste. Her flavor is sensual and provocative. She is a passionate person and it's reflected in her work emergence527(Twitter) lamariposareina(Instagram) https://www.facebook.com/LaMariposareinaHerTrueReflection

Soto Primo Cassandra, stage name Sotto Prima. My musical flow can best be described as folkish & blues. I'm an artist, poet, writer and aspiring musician. I'm writing two books, at the moment. I'm a first time writer: One is a compilation of poems, entitled Memoirs of A Lover Who Never Forgot and my second one, is a children's book that I'm illustrating myself, entitled Childish Quirks. “Childish Quirks consists of poems, short stories and a few topics that are most children will deal with such as, the jealousy of a new baby, alienation from school peers, divorce, faith as well as a lot of fun quirky stories and characters.

I haven't studied music in depth, but I have done a bit of recording and studio work, it being the compulsive person I am, I didn't continue with it because I realized it was more concentrated on my sexuality than my voice, and I wasn't comfortable with that. I'm a pretty unconventional person. I'm not quite sure if I should send my work in this email, none of my work is copyrighted yet, however I am looking into it. Sotto Prima

POETRY “Stargazing” I’m stargazing At this blank wall Daydreaming my night away Thinking about all the things I know you would say If I told you how much I love you And how much I really wish you could stay Here With me Hiding underneath sheets Of our heat (blush) I’m stargazing at this blank wall Daydreaming my night away Wondering Why all of a sudden I just got so weepy eyed And to say I don’t know The reason why Would definitely be a lie If you were here I would tell you “I’m fine” And you would give me that “Come again?” Look that I just adore And I’d blush And love you Just a little bit more But for now I’m still here stargazing at this blank wall Daydreaming my night away While indulging in my assumption That you my heart are sound asleep Hopefully dreaming about me… As I am here Daydreaming my night away While Stargazing at this blank wall Thinking about all the things I know you would say If I told you how much I really do miss you And just how much I wish you could have stayed.

Triumph Do not go gentle into that dark night Where sun is absent, where moonlight hides face. Charge forth and challenge ignorance with light And dispel evil with beauty and grace. We know there’s nothing new under sun And that all it takes for evil to win Is for good to turn tail without having begun To stand up for the right to make evil spin! But be no coward, stand not aside afraid Draw forth your sword, charge forward into war Slash and slice By Robert Gibson —Passion Poet

What do you know about love? Love Is it a phenomena? For every-one Or just a few? Is it freely given ? How does it feel ? Is it soft ? Is it light and airy Or tough as nails ? Is love a feeling ? A noun or verb? Does it come with surrender ? Does love have memories So strong that you smile ? Does love have such pain You cry from deep within From your toes. Does love make you confident Cocky ,intelligent Or a stammering fool? Does it motivate and inspire ? Does it create dreams in the mind ? Does it create strength Where there was none ? Or weaken the knees For once? Does it warm your heart That was cold? Does it awaken the soul Creating hope ? So tell me What do you know, about love ?

CREATIVE ARTS At the age of 20, Photographer Zico Miller recognized his interest in photography. Now officially a photographer for about one year, Zico Miller has advanced quickly within his field. Though he says there is no real secret to photography, he exclaims that lighting is most important when taking a photo With his team members Steven Nichols and Martin Mingo, these three are focused on providing amazing quality and fast service while simultaneously being customer friendly. When asked “What gives you (Zico) an edge over other photographers?” He simply stated “well I’m a humble person when it comes to photography. But, I will say the support from my family and friends is what helps push me.” To young aspiring photographers, here are some words from Zico to inspire you: “the road to becoming a professional is full with a lot of UPS and DOWNS, don’t compare yourself to other photographers it can lead to depression. But, compare your work when you first start to your current day and you’ll see the improvements. Try also to be humble but, don’t sell yourself short and if you have an ideal don’t let anything stop you.” For more information on Zico and QUICKSCOPE PHOTOGRAPHY visit their facebook page at www.facebook.com/quickscopephotography where you can view some of their work. BENEFITS OF

PRIVATE TUTORING If your aim is to improve your aptitude and knowledge base in a particular field, all education pertaining to this subject will be useful. If this statement is assumed true, then the benefits afforded by private tuition are enormous. You will have the advantage of a whole teacher to yourself, with their lesson plans and strategies of teaching designed just for you! It seems impossible to doubt the enormous benefits this will offer. In a classroom, one teacher may be faced with approximately thirty pupils, each with different abilities, different rates of learning, and individual strengths and weaknesses. Yet despite this, for the majority of the lesson the teacher will be forced to treat his class as if it contained just one student. He or she will orate from one end of the classroom, unable to gauge how effectively each pupil is assimilating the lesson. The lesson plans will be designed to fit the needs of the average pupil; and the teacher will proceed at a rate suitable for the average pupil. In this environment it is all to easy for a bright child or adolescent to fail to grasp one particular point, as the swathe of teacher talk washes over them like the unrelenting tides. It is unlikely even the best of teachers would spot the particular point of misunderstanding cast on the countenance on one pupil, hidden amongst so many other faces. To draw attention to their lack of understanding can be intimidating for the pupil: everyone else is silent, so they must have understood. Do I want to draw attention to myself? All too often the misunderstanding goes unexpressed and unaided. The obvious benefit of one to one tuition is that the tutor can tailor their teaching style to the abilities of their student. They will be able to gauge the level of the pupils understanding, and, more importantly, track down the sources of misunderstanding, and deal with them effectively. Away from the bustle of the classroom, the student will feel more able to voice their difficulties; and having just one pupil to deal with, the teacher will be more capable of resolving them.
