“Entrepreneurship The Real Deal”

I

have been reviewing 2014 with a strong emphasis on my “why” for all the efforts I put into entrepreneurship on a daily, weekly, monthly basis that provides the sum total of my annual effort. The exploration of my “why” has taken me through a maze of infinite details on the subject. My broadbased examination of this experience has led me to one conclusion. My “why” is strong because I have a product that people, want, need, and can afford. In addition, the gel factor on how I put my product forward has always been guided by the “passion principle” that represents who I am as an individual, a business and finally as a parent. People buy what they like, not necessarily what they need. As an Entrepreneur you have to divide your “why” into two categories; your reasoning for why you are engaged in the activity you chose and how can that activity benefit those who are receiving your services. In other words, your “why” effort must manifest itself in the reasons for selfgratification and how the product translates into gratification for your target market.

Entrepreneurs today must examine how strong their “why” is and implement an understanding of how their “why” can engage the other four team players, who; what; where; and finally these engagements will allow them to really strengthen the notion of “How”. I am focusing on these five areas because they represent so much of who we are as people and also the sum total of who we

are on a daily basis. Have you ever had a conversation with anyone at anytime on a given day where if not one all of the five W’s have been engaged in the discussion? More importantly these five words lay the foundation for that strongly sought after business plan. 1. Why are you thinking of getting into business and why would people be interested in buying your tangible or intangible product? 2. Who are you focusing on as a tar get market? 3. What is your business/mar keting plan? 4. Where will your business be located? 5. When will you get star ted?

Entrepreneurs, 2015 will be your year! Consider reviewing your five W’s; qualify each area you review and allow review and assessment to strengthen your focus. Are you presenting an authentic assessment of who you are and why you want to do what you do? A strong “why” is essential to Entrepreneurship Growth and Freedom!

FEB 2015 As of mid 2000, the population of Barbados was recorded at some 274,540. The diverse ancestry of the island attributes to its current unique cultural blend which includes Arawak Indians, British settlers, European Indentured Slaves, African Slaves and East Indians. Overall, the people of Barbados (or Bajans as we are known) are quite friendly; so fitting in with locals will lend itself quite easily to your peace of mind.

Barbados is an island of the Lesser Antilles, 21 miles in length, as much as 14 miles in width and divided into 11 parishes. It is located at 13.4N, 15.4W. The island is situated in the western area of the North Atlantic Ocean and 100 kilometers east of the Windward Islands and the Caribbean Sea. Barbados is relatively flat with the exception of one major high point, Mount Hillaby, which measures approximately 1,115 feet or some 343 metres above sea level. The west coast of Barbados offers calm, clear water which is quite conducive to your many beach activities; while the east coast opens up beautifully to crashing waves and an environment that is more suited to sun bathing, walking, jogging, surfing and even meditation.

The Tourism Industry in Barbados is impetus for the economic development on the island as it has impacted significantly on the lives of all Barbadians. It is a very vital aspect of the economy of Barbados and it is always within our best interest to ensure that your comfort and safety is first and foremost. Despite this, we still strongly recommend you exercise caution with regards to your valuables and even frequenting certain areas.

Barbados is awash with history, the arts, nightlife, fine dining, and even luxury living. Getting around the island is a ‘breeze’ (pun intended) as options are somewhat endless when it comes to your choice of transportation. The people of Barbados are quite helpful when it comes to giving assistance with regards to making your way around the island. The main language of Barbados is English but bajan dialect (broken English) is widely spoken as it is almost a natural way of life. We can’t promise you that you will always be able to make complete sense of what the people of Barbados have to say; but, we recommend you give it a listen and even a try, as it will only augur well to adding a ‘sunshine feel’ to your stay on the island. www.bajansunonline.com/MAGAZINE/ | info@bajansunonline.com | @BajanSunOnline

Go od Leaders ask Themselves A

s an entrepreneur, what is your leadership style? I've worked for a number of employers over the years, all with very different personalities and leadership styles. Some were obsessive micromanagers while others were hands off and provided no guidance as a manager, leaving me to figure out more than a few important things for myself. When you Google leadership styles, one of the first results is courtesy of Wikipedia, which gives the textbook definition of leaders as such: "They range from the grouchy, live-in-fear type of boss, to the merry pack leader who builds a relationship of trust with his subordinates in order to increase productivity." Further research reveals that good leadership traits include good communication skills, creativity and the ability to inspire workers, all while keeping staff motivated. If you are an entrepreneur or plan to become one, ask yourself these three questions and and your answers would assist in improving your leadership style.

1. Are you approachable? A company is not measured by the number of employees but rather by the culture it promotes and the ability of its leader to generate feelings of loyalty and a sense of purpose among his staff. Work performance is more likely to increase when leaders maintain an open-door policy, engage in non-work related conversations, show a sense of humor and stand by their employees when they are facing challenges. Implementing a better leadership style: A good exercise in sound leadership is to encourage activities outside the workplace; activities where the boss joins in even for just an hour. Examples of such are training for a marathon, volunteering, taking yoga classes or attending a skill-acquisition workshop. These are all good ways to be approachable and build team camaraderie. It is also a great way to empower team members and provide them with a sense of purpose other than only focusing on the company’s bottom line.

www.bajansunonline.com/MAGAZINE/ | info@bajansunonline.com | @BajanSunOnline

FEB 2015 2. Have you created a climate of security? Creating a climate of security within an organization is a key component to any employee-retention strategy. Upper management should create a bond with their personnel, often reminding them of their worth and praising them for their performance. In smaller businesses, they should be kept in the loop about upcoming projects and given the sense of security that comes with knowing that they are building their careers on solid ground.

Implementing a better leadership style: Adding a personal touch: something as simple as knowing an employee's name or a personal email complimenting them on a job well-done,, can go a long way. If there is a problem or challenging situation at the office, meet with the team in person or send an email to address it. Don't leave it to your supervisors to handle. If your company is very large, employees realize that a true friendship with a boss may not be likely, but they want to feel that their contribution counts or at least is being

acknowledged. If you are running a small company, then it's easy to pick up the telephone and talk in person when a job is well done. 3. Are you leading by example? Are you behaving in an unprofessional manner? Employees notice everything, including the behavior and business ethics of their superiors. So if you are cutting corners, lying to employees or clients, or misappropriating funds, your employees have little reason to respect you as a leader. Besides, a sloppy boss will not have enough credibility to criticize a sloppy team! Implementing a better leadership style: A leader should lead by example. Be reliable and credible, and care about their reputation as well as the company's reputation. When it comes to a leader's work performance, hold yourself to a higher standard; one your team wants to emulate. If employees see you being professional, going the extra mile and/or caring about the work in the way you want them to then you bet they will want to do the same.

The Value of Perspective P

erspective is like an elevator ride. When you start out on the first floor some of the challenges you may be dealing with are right there in your face. Sometimes they are like mountains that you have to walk around or climb over. Sometimes you have to sort through a crowd to get to the heart of an issue that is if you can find your way through the crowd. And when struggling through the crowd there’s lots of distractions to take your attention away from your objective. These are the perspectives when you are on the first floor and standing face-to-face with whatever challenge you may be facing. But, get into an elevator and ride up a few floors. When you get to the fifth floor and look down to the

By Norma T. Hollis

first floor you can still see the same challenge but you see it in a new view, a new perspective. You feel better because the challenge is not confronting you directly. You can look down on it and as a result you see it differently. It is often even easier to find a solution to the challenge because of the new perspective.

Then travel up a few more floors – to the 20th or 30th floor. Now look down and the challenge that you thought you could not overcome looks like something very insignificant from this new perspective. You have risen above it and therefore can see solutions more clearly. Certainly you are not affected emotionally in the same way when it was confronting you directly.

www.bajansunonline.com/MAGAZINE/ | info@bajansunonline.com | @BajanSunOnline

This is the advantage of perspective. It seems to change as we grow. Our view of a situation at age 20 is different than the way we see it at age 40 or age 60. This is why we seek the counsel of elders to assist us to resolve challenges. As we get older we have more experience, we can better predict cause and effect. We make decisions that have a longer reaching impact and in the process we hopefully also grow wiser. This view of perspective is similar to the view of authenticity or even alignment. As I am growing in my understanding of authenticity and the ‘assignment’ that I’ve been given to help people understand authenticity, I am watching my understanding deepen and my view expand. Where I thought that uncovering authenticity was the end product of my journey I now understand that it is the foundation from which many other aspects are emerging. As my perspective grows I can see how authenticity has led to a new view of alignment. For years I talked about how important it is to ‘tweak’ a part of your life to become authentic. Now I understand that this tweaking leads to a person creating alignment in their life. And I’ve learned that alignment is important to overall life satisfaction. We benefit when we align our lives.

Now my perspective is growing more. It took a few years for me to see the transition from authenticity to alignment. Then it only took a few months to make the transition from alignment to vibration. I realize that as we move up the elevator and change our perspective we are also changing our vibration. This term ‘vibration’ is one that I will be discussing frequently as we move forward. It refers to the energy that we emit and how we relate to energy that comes into our space. Vibration is related to perspective. Just like our perspective changes as we move up in an elevator our vibration changes too. I’m loving these new perspectives and look forward to sharing more with you. Look for more in the next editions. In the mean time consider the perspectives you are living with and how your perspectives are changing as you age. On what floor is your elevator? Is your elevator moving up or down? And how are you adjusting to the movement?

Here’s to healthy perspectives of positive growth!

As she shared, her love for making and designing clothing began at a tender age. She would put pen to paper or create ‘fab’ clothes for her dolls. However, it was only at the age of 16, that she realized that designing was her purpose and the path that she should take. In 2007, Gaynelder entered the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP) pageant, where she debuted her designing skills. Her showcase won her the title of ‘BEST

Here are our top tips for wooing shoppers: 1. Fall in love with your mobile shoppers.

Valentine with a box of chocolates".

Mobile means on-the-go shopping for Valentine's Day; with twenty-four percent of customers researching products and comparing prices on smartphones and another 32 percent doing the same on tablets. Fifteen to twenty percent will look up the locations of physical stores, as well as their hours and the best routes. And with over half of shoppers making a purchase the week of Valentine’s Day, many of these may be shoppers-on-the-go.

Customize your keywords and ad copy with Valentine’s Day seasonally relevant terms.

FEB 2015 Q: What would you say are some of your greatest challenges as an entrepreneur?

received constructive feedback and also established business relationships with extremely lucrative potential.

A: In Bar bados our skillset is typically utilized in cadastral/ boundary Surveying. This presents a challenge since there is a bottleneck to obtain cadastral surveying licenses from The Lands and Surveys Department. It is a long archaic process which needs to be revamped, legislatively.

In the past our quality of work has been lauded by the IADB and as such maybe recommended by them for similar work both regionally and extra-regionally.

Surveyors produce legal plans which are used in conveyancing, land disputes and litigation. It is plausible that to acquire this license, having acquired the relevant degree, that we enroll in a job attachment at the Lands & Surveys Department. The disadvantage to this modality is that only a few graduates are allowed to enroll per year and the process usually takes 12 to 18 months to complete. Interest in the profession has grown, and more persons have acquired professional degrees in the field. Thus, the waiting list has surpassed over fifteen graduates which means some us will have to wait more than seven years to practice boundary surveying in Barbados, at the current rate. Solutions to this problem have been met by bureaucracy, by our senior counterparts. In 2013 the former Minister of Housing and Lands while highlighting issues, hampering physical development, cited that there was a shortage of surveyors. We have the potential resources waiting to be utilized. We remain confident as young entrepreneurs that those persons in charge will soon implement a more efficient licensing system, so that we could take the profession forward. Initially seed capital presented a major challenge. It has been difficult to acquire equipment which is usually in excess of 10, 000 USD per item. Personal finances were exhausted and a lot of our resources were reinvested to acquire equipment. Some months we had to choose between buying tires, paying our phone bills or investing in our website, but God has been there every step of the way.

Recently, I have worked along with a leading construction firm in Barbados on Sandals Barbados. I see this as an achievement because strategic partnerships and relationships are fundamental to surviving within the construction climate in Barbados. Also, we have attached ourselves to a regional engineering procurement and construction management company, which broadens our scope to the Caribbean and Latin America, especially as it relates to Geographical Information Systems and Asset Integrity Management. Essentially, I view the partnerships we have formed as the major stepping stones at this tier of our development. Q: What are your plans for 2015? A: In 2015 we want to r eap the har vest of the seeds we have sown in 2014. A lot of time was spent in 2014 forging relationships and conceptualizing ideas. We have some major projects to complete on a subcontractual basis with entities such as Barbados Water Authority and Barbados National Oil Terminals, within a matter of days. Extra-regionally we have also established strategic partnerships, with companies as far as Columbia, through our senior partners. We have a series of e-commerce initiatives to roll out in 2015, beginning with the launch of a mobile app geared towards marketing Barbadian Entertainment, Real Estate, Tourist Attractions and 24-hr shopping, using virtual 3D reality in conjunction with the Google Earth platform. We want to launch this app in May.

I am sure that our current inventory of equipment is superior to many of the older surveyors out there, with or without a license. Q: What are some of your achievements within your business? A: In 2013 we enter ed an Entr epr eneur ship competition facilitated by Automotive Art. From a field of over eighty (80) viable businesses we were selected as one of the top 5 candidates in innovation and viability.

We interacted with prominent business mentors, www.bajansunonline.com/MAGAZINE/ | info@bajansunonline.com | @BajanSunOnline

3 THINGS REQUIRED TO BE AN ENTREPRENEUR

B

usiness owners need three things to set them on their way when they are starting a new venture: leadership skills, a meticulous thought process and an entrepreneurial spirit. 1. Be a people person. Understand what your customer wants and needs, build strong networks and make connections when you pitch your company. Be an adaptable leader that your team can look up to -- the first to arrive at the office and the last to leave.

2. Be disciplined. An entrepreneur never stops learning: they begin by putting themselves in the consumer’s shoes and work from there. A strong venture is one that is built on the foundation of customer discovery, and the thoughtful allocation of resources. 3. Be passionate.

It may take a great deal of trial and error before finding the business model that will work for you, so you have to be committed to your goal and find others who feel the same way about your vision.

EMPRESS DIVA - MELISSA SMALL By Raeann Beckles

E

mpress Diva - Melissa Small, always had a passion for music, but not until she was between the ages of 10 to 12, she began to take it seriously. For Melissa, despite trying her hand at the piano and finding the guitar interesting; her voice became her instrument. An instrument that she has been committed to sharpening over the years. She lives by the words ‘practice makes perfect’, therefore any chance Melissa gets to perfect her craft, she takes it. As she shared: “as singers we have the ability to manipulate our voices into creating sounds that are so beautiful. Words can't express enough the emotionally satisfying sense of how everything about it is right. Music completes me.” Though she has been performing for more than 10 years, Melissa takes a look back down memory lane and cites her first performance at the Parkinson Memorial Secondary where she sung for her school concert. Oh how time has passed. Since then, she has performed at the Pinelands Community Center with Donella Weekes. Melissa also won a prize for participating at the Hilton Hotel with Tamara Marshall, a lady for whom she has great respect. Melissa has also performed at the Richard Stoute over 21 competition for two years, Morning Barbados, The Mix with Teshia Hinds and at Karaoke competitions around Barbados. As she indicated she has

also been happy to have performed with Aries Hi, Victoria and particularly her brother San who has been a source of encouragement. Her strength and support also comes from her other siblings, close friends and fans of which she is very grateful. Going forward, Melissa intends to continue portraying a positive image through music for young upcoming artist who need inspiration; while writing, performing and stabilizing a future for her son Amiri and herself. For Melissa, Amiri is her inspiration, as paving a way for him is her ultimate goal. Melissa’s pursuit is also a tribute to her mom, who passed away some time back. Melissa intends to make her mom proud and as she said: “Mind over Matter - Straight to the Top.” Her encouragement to upcoming artistes is humble: “first trust in JAH. Always love and have confidence in yourselves, work hard towards your dreams. Set goals and achieve them and no matter what never give up.” She encourages others as she too have been faced with challenges, and as she shared, “I needed to believe in myself above all. There were some issues, things got a bit rocky and for a while I began to doubt myself. BUT, I started to love me again. I listened and I've learnt; trusting in my ability and using the talent I have been so graciously blessed with indeed.”

In 2014, Coopa Dan was nominated for best new artiste at the 2014 Barbados Music Awards and currently has three tracks available on iTunes: ‘Anxious’, ‘Show it off’ and his break out hit ‘Question of The Year’. As Coopa Dan explained, his inspiration comes from real events that occur in and around the party scene as well as from real life experiences. Inspiration that has undoubtedly served him well thus far. When Coopa Dan isn’t making music, conquering the challenge of understanding music theory and asking tonnes of questions to learn new things; he teaches. Coopa Dan, has been a school teacher for the past seven years and as a big fan of education, he is also finishing his degree at The Erdiston Teachers’ Training College. P

hysique Pro Fitness Consultancy (PPFC) is a per sonal training business which was established in the year 1999 and caters to everyone from the professional person to the average housewife. Since the demand for this type of business is high Trainer - Jerome Greenidge sought to differentiate himself from all the other trainers plying their trade. As such, Jerome committed himself to studying the most popular training concepts and testing them on his clients to determine which ones worked most effectively. After a couple years of combining concepts and experimenting, Jerome created his own training style which can be modified to fit any body type. Most of his clients see him on average two or three times a week at their home or office, as his business goes where ever the client is interested in being trained. Needless to say, most of Jerome’s clients train at home. Given his passion to share knowledge, Jerome educates his clients on not only proper nutrition but how to train on their own with minimum equipment, which is always a hit as his clients wouldn't have to further expense themselves.

The service Jerome and by extension PPCF offers covers everything from when to train, target setting and constant assessments to

see what works and what is not working. Over the years Jerome have found that consistency is the main reason people stop training. In response to this, Jerome has devised a strategy which works and works well. The workouts in this strategy take no longer than 5 to 8 minutes, with minimum equipment requirement. What is more is that, the results from this method have been nothing short of outstanding and Jerome’s clients love it. Short intense workouts work great especially when combined with adequate nutrition. More importantly, this method has been such a hit that his clients have encouraged him to do a fitness app which is called the ‘8 Min Burn’, carded to be released August 2014. All in all Jerome ensures that his clients are happy and see results quickly. In his words “it doesn't matter if my clients are vacationing in France or staying in a beach house on the east coast. If they or the general population want a workout or tips on everything from how to acquire muscle, lose weight or get stronger, they can do so by visiting this facebook link: http://www.facebook.com/ provenphysique.”

dvertising Consultant and Certified Personal Trainer Kevin Frederick’s passion for the sport of Bodybuilding was sparked from the time he was first introduced to William Morris at Strike Force gym. Though interested in sports, reading, music and helping others reach their goals, it is Bodybuilding which has captured Kevin’s attention throughout the years.

stand to be corrected but in totality we produce the most men and women of professional status in the Caribbean through the various disciplines, which is a direct example of the level of greatness we possess as a people and also the great leadership of our Barbados Bodybuilding Federation.” As such, it is Kevin’s wish that the champions of past and present be acknowledged for their exploits and be supported as they continue to show the world that Barbados has and still continues to produce some of the best physiques the world has ever seen.

As a former judge Kevin has followed Bodybuilding in Barbados for 16 years, where he witnessed Barbados dominating the sport both nationally and regionally. He acknowledged the likes of Earl Maynard, Albert Scantlebury and Roy Callender for paving the way for generations of future super stars like Rosalind Vanterpool, Lyndon Belgrade, and Jerry Nicholls among others. He also explained that the sport of Bodybuilding and all of its segments calls for a level of commitment, dedication and as he calls it: ‘that never give up attitude’ which is like none other. In his own words: “It will test your mental fortitude, while creating the idea in your mind that you can and will overcome anything life throws at you.” In a recent Facebook post by IFBB Pro Ramon Dodson it was highlighted of the raw talent Barbados possess. A post that Kevin undoubtedly agrees with. Kevin said: “I

When asked about what are some of your challenges; Shaniqua candidly stated: “the greatest challenge is staying ahead of the game and thinking outside the box. You have to be the bright pink crayon in the box of black crayons to stand out! That can be challenging at times.” Further to this, she indicated that she has faith and works hard. In her own words: “I don't believe in stressing on a situation for too long. It is so easy to slip into a pensive mood especially as an entrepreneur and sole proprietor; you feel the burden of the business on your shoulders.

But, I believe that God has a plan and everything that is meant for me or anyone for that matter has already been written and set in stone. You just have to work smart & hard and have faith in God.” Over the next five years much is to be expected of this brand. It is the intention of Shaniqua that Faerie Faces become a household name. As she shared: “when you hear Faerie Faces I want you to think Makeup, Glam, Beauty, and Luxury! I want to be a celebrity makeup artist as well some day!”

3 WAYS TO DEVELOP AN UNSTOPPABLE TEAM

A

ccording to ancient Greek tradition, the inspiration for running marathons came from the fabled Greek solider Pheidippides who ran the distance from a battlefield near the city of Marathon all the way to Athens - roughly 26 miles - to declare Greece's victory over the invading Persian armies.

I recently wrote about my efforts to train for the Disney Marathon Weekend where I intended to complete a half marathon run (13.1 miles) on a Saturday and a full marathon run (26.2 miles) the next day. This past weekend I successfully finished both races at Walt Disney World.

Unfortunately, according to the myth, Pheidippides died immediately after delivering the news.

More than 40,000 participants took part in either or both runs. Over the weekend, I gained some interesting insight into motivation and why people do difficult things.

With death as a potential, albeit extreme, outcome it's a small wonder that very few people ever complete a marathon in their lifetime. In fact, according to Running USA's 2014 report 514,000 Americans - or 0.0017 percent - of the population has finished an endurance race of 26.2 miles. However, there are some important lessons regarding the development and harnessing of an unstoppable workforce that leaders and business owners can learn from this arduous athletic endeavor.

None of us runners were compensated for the miles we logged or the physical and mental punishment we endured during our months of training. In fact, each of us paid hundreds of dollars in fees just to participate--not even counting the cost of travel, food and lodging. So, why do we do it? What kind of competitive advantage would a business have if it could somehow harness that "why?"

www.bajansunonline.com/MAGAZINE/ | info@bajansunonline.com | @BajanSunOnline

FEB 2015 Here are three reasons that I witnessed firsthand as to why marathoners do what they do---and those reasons have nothing to do with compensation. 1. Affiliation. There is nothing quite like the anxious expectancy of waiting along with thousands of other runners in the pre-dawn hours of a crisp morning all with a single focus and intent. Each of us trained dozens of hours and logged hundreds of miles in preparation for a particular event. The first goal that unifies us is to finish the course. The next is to achieve that goal without sustaining a serious injury. The next is to achieve a personal best completion time. There is a primal unity that surrounds such simple goals and the rigorous commitment of time, energy and endurance necessary to achieve those goals. A marathon is bigger than any of us, but without each of us individuals choosing to run together---it's not a marathon, it's just a run. There is a profound cohesion and comradery that occurs on race day. Businesses that are able to unify employees around simple, yet challenging goals that require effort and commitment may have a distinct advantage over competitors.

2. Affirmation. Marathoners run for a thousand different reasons but every reason is life affirming. Specifically, distance racers will frequently run with biographic signs attached to their backs or their stories written on their shirts. This weekend was no exception.

The back of one shirt I saw stated that the runner was a 55year-old open-heart surgery survivor but he had every intention of staying ahead of whoever was reading his story. Another was a three-time breast cancer survivor who would beat the marathon the same way she had beaten cancer, one step at a time. A couple I saw wore matching shirts that featured a photo and name of their 4-year-old son, Jacob, who died from leukemia. They were raising money to set up a foundation in their son's name. There were hundreds of others as well, but every stated reason to run was life affirming whether the racer was affirming their own life or the life of another. If an organization can harness that level of personal, individualized passion, and not merely see employees as interchangeable cogs in a machine, they will have a doggedly loyal employee base that will break down walls to achieve collective goals. 3. Recognition. This is such a fundamental need of every human being, but companies tend to do a lousy job of recognizing the best, brightest, smartest and hardest-working employees.

We stayed in Disney for three days after the last race was run. At every Disney theme park we visited the runners who completed their respective races wore their medals proudly around their necks everywhere they went. They wore them in the restaurants, riding rides, reading books on hotel porches, riding the Disney buses. It didn't matter what they were doing, they wore their medals.

www.bajansunonline.com/MAGAZINE/ | info@bajansunonline.com | @BajanSunOnline

FEB 2015 They did it because they wanted to be noticed, and they wanted the 99.9983 percent of the population who didn't complete a marathon that weekend to ask them about the experience. They wanted to be recognized for their achievement, dedication and sacrifice that the medal embodied. The medal symbolized their story and they wanted to share it with everyone willing to ask. Sincere recognition programs are difficult to execute especially for large organizations where the annual performance management process (PMP) is a soulless exercise in box checking and automated efficiency.

The companies that are

able to

implement

meaningful recognition programs that inspire, honor and celebrate workers for their unique differences, contributions and creative solutions will go a long way towards eliminating retention and recruiting issues that many organizations are now facing. While there are certainly dozens of motivating factors

that

contribute

to

employee

morale,

performance and job satisfaction---the three listed

above are unique. I witnessed and experienced each factor firsthand and how they drive marathoners to invest ridiculous amounts of time and energy, risking physical injury--even tempting death---without anything in return other than those three abstract ideals. Smart leaders will find a way to build a culture

around each or all of those intangibles for the sake of their employees and the sake of their business. www.bajansunonline.com/MAGAZINE/ | info@bajansunonline.com | @BajanSunOnline

Legs is one body part that is avoided and even if it is done, it is not done with the same intensity as the upper more visual muscles like chest, shoulders and arms. Legs require work and lots of it. The reason is we stand and use our legs a lot more. I am not only talking about the guys

For your leg training to be effective you have to understand that you don't have to be in the gym for hours. You simply need to apply enough intensity to cause some muscular damage so that the legs can heal and change. One of the most important exercises for legs is the squat. People run like hell from this movement but it is the king of the lower body exercises. When done properly you will build legs of steal and a firm butt to boot. Now there are people who can't squat because of knee or back issues and the leg press can be used in this case as a substitute. Exercises like squats, leg presses, lunges, step ups, vertical jumps, and leg extensions are all very good for hitting the thighs. If in doubt as to how to perform these exercises seek out a personal trainer as you will be shown how to do them

THE IMPORTANCE OF LEG AND GLUTE TRAINING by Jerome Greenidge

Some people often separate quads and hamstrings on different days but once you make sure you have a balance between the

two then your legs should take shape. I personally train both muscle groups on the same day. Now, I must talk directly to the ladies who keep asking me how to get tight, well rounded glutes and the answer is in the leg training. Have you ever seen a guy who trains legs hard

with

a

flat

underdeveloped

butt?

The

answer

is

never! Training legs with heavy squats, step ups (this is where you step up onto

a bench or chair), lunges, vertical

jumps and dead lifts all are very effective at changing the way you look from behind. There are other isolation type exercises like tush tighteners and rear leg raises which help shape the glutes as well. Nutrition is very very important in the quest to improve the quality of your quads as you don't want to look fat. You want people and yourself to see lean muscle with some degree of separation so you can't eat badly and expect to get great results. Aim to train legs two times a week and give at least a day or even two days between workouts for recovery. Once again I can be contacted at 239-7184 or simply go to my page ‘provenphysique’. I also launched the first fitness app in the Caribbean so go and check it out. At this moment it is only available to iphone and ipad users but hopefully I will have it on android soon. It is called the 8 minute burn so go and get that and start changing the way you look. For more info on these and more techniques contact Jerome at 1-246-239-7184 or go to my facebook

This is Diana Nyad’s story… She is a Special Olympics’ Athlete “When I stood on the Havana shore for the fifth time and looked out at the faraway horizon, to be honest, I was intimidated. I became more and more afraid with each attempt rather than more confident. But, I was also deeply motivated by the deep sense of satisfaction that goes along with being a human being who doesn't give up. It didn't matter how tough it had been in my previous attempts. I had decided I was going to keep showing what perseverance means. I was going to loudly proclaim in word and deed that any one of us can chase an impossible dream. While it may not have seemed impossible to me, others had made it very clear that I was on a mission of futility. I was told that no swimmer would ever make it all the way from Cuba to Florida. Just not going to happen. Though I was perceived as being unrealistic, I never underestimated the difficulties I faced. The earth is more than four-fifths ocean. If you were to lay out the nautical charts for all the seas of our planet, you couldn't find a more difficult 100-mile stretch for a swimmer than the Florida Straits between Cuba and Florida. Once an attempt is underway, our crew has a rule. No matter the circumstances, no one tells me exactly where I am in the Straits. It can be very depressing if you are informed that you are still very far from shore. It's no different, as far as I am concerned, if the news is encouraging. If someone has seen the GPS markings and tells you, "Hey, we ar e halfway acr oss," you still can't be sur e

By Judy Beckles

what's going to happen with the tides, the currents, your own frailty, sharks or jellyfish. So my crew knows to keep their information to themselves.

Toward the end of this last attempt, I felt like I was on empty. I struggled to swim, struggled to keep my mind in focus and struggled in my battle against the elements, the coldness ripping through my body. At that point, Bonnie Stoll, my handler, business partner and best friend, did something very unusual for her. She broke the vow of silence. Seated in her usual spot in the support boat, Bonnie motioned for me to swim over and, when I did, she said, "Look up there." I moved my goggles up to the top of my head, focused on the horizon and saw a thin, white light along the surface. "Ohhh, the sun's coming up," I said. "I can take off all the jellyfish gear and the sun is going to warm my body." Replied Bonnie, "It's better than the sun. Those are the lights of Key West." I was dazed by the idea that my long-sought goal was in sight and still dazed physically and emotionally when I finally, triumphantly reached shore.

I brought with me three messages that have hopefully resonated with everyone who hears my story. No.1: Never , ever give up. No.2: You ar e never too old to chase your dr eams. No.3: It’s a team effort. In my case, that consists of a 35-person support crew. People can do all the scientific analyses of whether we athletes can do things or not, but they never figure in the power of the human spirit. It is that power that can ultimately turn failure into success.

Eyeshadow Application Tips & Tricks

E

yeshadow application can be daunting. First, you must choose the right eyeshadow palette for your eye color, then you have to figure out how to use all the various shades on your lid. In this article, I share a few eyeshadow application secrets I wish I knew before I became a beauty writer. How to Properly Apply Eyeshadow I outline a basic eyeshadow application in my article How to Apply Eyeshadow. It's a 5-step system that involves primer, a neutral base, a crease color and highlighter. You can tame it down for a daytime look

or play it up for nighttime drama.

How to Choose an Eyeshadow Palette The key to selecting an eye shadow palette is to consider your eye color. You want your eyes to pop and the best way to do this is to use a contrasting color palette on your lids. Blue eyes look great with golds and browns. Green eyes are wonderful with pinks and browns. Brown or dark brown eyes look wonderful with blues, greens, aubergine (a deep purple) or even deep, jewel colors. Taupe and lavender look great on all eye colors.

Get Professional Help in Choosing Your Best Colors

I love to shop at Sephora because I find the salespeople aren't as pushy as they are at other department stores yet they'll help you find makeup that complements your skin and eye color and teach you application tips. They'll also help you find the right brushes for your shadow application. Department store counters are also a good bet for finding the right colors for you. Just don't get suckered into a full-makeover, unless you want one. You may feel obligated to pay a lot more money on makeup than you meant to. I suggest hitting a few counters, making it clear to the salepersons that you are shopping for a new eye shadow and will pick the one you like best from the bunch. How to Wear Jewel Tones On Your Lids Jewel-toned colors with dark pigments look best on women with olive skin tones. If you have a

pink complexion, light skin, light hair and light eyes, deeply pigmented colors such as deep purples, blues and greens can be too harsh on your skin color. Be Careful With Shimmer Eyeshadows Shimmer makes eyes really pop, but it also highlights heavy lids, lines and wrinkles. If you don't have wrinkled eyelids yet (I kind of do and I don't care!), try this great look for shimmer: create a "nude" lid, but apply a bit of gold shimmer to the browbone. Gorgeous!

How to Use Eye Shadow as Eyeliner I don't use pencil or liquid liners, instead, I use the darkest color in my makeup palette as an eyeliner. I use a small rounded brush, dip it into the dark brown color and then sweep it just under my bottom lashes. I then go over it with a finger to smudge it a bit. You can also use an angled brush to get a more precise line. Dip the brush in water first to create a liquid liner from your shadow.

THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY AND THE ELDERLY By Fay Parris

T

he month of love is also celebrated by the older generation! No matter how old you are love matters. Love is cherished in various forms but the bottom line is we all want to be needed, and to matter to someone else. The elderly are sometimes over looked as Valentine’s Day is seen as an event for the young. A number of elderly live alone, may have lost their significant other, or may live alone in a nursing home away from family and friends and therefore may be forgotten. Here are some ideas to show the older adult in your life that they are important to you and they matter. Traditional gifts - Flowers- are a popular gift on Valentine’s Day, research has shown that flowers on Valentine’s Day eases depression, helps with decreasing loneliness, and refreshes memory. Gift of plants can be also therapeutic. Cards with personalized messages let the elderly know how much they are appreciated. Gifts such as chocolates and cupcakes can be heartwarming for those elderly clients that do not have medical conditions that prevent them from eating sweets, e.g. diabetes.

Gifts certificates- certificates for facials, body massages, or medication are thoughtful gifts. Ipad, tablet, or eBook – for the elderly who loves to read, play computer games or be on Facebook this will also be a treasured gift. Make sure to set them up before wrapping, adding apps you think your elderly will enjoy. Dinner – Make dinner a special affair. Invite family and friends the elderly may not have seen for some time. Use fruits and vegetables that can bring out the red and white theme of Valentine’s Day. Play Oldie Goldie music from their era softly in the background while reminiscing about old times and loved ones. An after dinner game of bingo using red and white heart shaped bingo cards may enhance the evening.

Love letters – with the emphasis on the positive impact their lives has had on others, highlighting the good times and positive memories also enriches their valentine experience

Give them a phone call or a visit – especially unexpected ones, dropping in not at the usual time for visits makes the elderly feel extra special and loved on this valentine’s occasion. Specially made gifts – are not only affordable, this personalizes the gift and enhances the sentiment of love and care. Ideas for these gifts: embrace things loved by the elderly, photos, and short notes from loved ones. Gift ideas can be practical based on any physical or medical conditions experienced by the elderly e.g. persons with arthritis may benefit from openers to remove bottle caps, extenders etc.

5 MANAGEMENT TIPS

I

t’s something all managers want to do, yet, as every manager knows, it’s easier said than done: bringing out the best in your people. How often as managers are we frustrated by chronic employee underperformance? Studies routinely show that an unacceptably high number up of employees – up to 70 percent – are disengaged, emotionally disconnected from their companies. Yet the most effective management is often the simplest and most basic. All five of these management tips have a common cost: nothing.

I’ll be the first to admit nothing on this list is inordinately complex. But just because something is common sense doesn’t mean it’s commonly practiced. The best managers are insightful and employee-centric. They understand their employees, and know that bringing out the best in them – to ultimately drive positive business results – is the absolute best thing they can do as a manager.

1 Take Control of Your To-Do List Having an unruly to-do list can be overwhelming. If you find yourself rushing around, but not actually getting anything done, try the following process: Write it all down. Put everything on one list. Determine which tasks are easy and which are more difficult. Do some easy things. Spend 15 minutes doing the easy tasks. Focus on speed: make the quick phone calls, shoot off the brief emails. Cross as many tasks off the list as you can. Turn to a bigger task. Turn off your phone, close all the open windows on your computer, and focus on one of the more challenging tasks. Do this for 35 minutes without distraction. Take a break. After 35 minutes, take a 10-minute break. Then return to step two.

FEB 2015 2 Engage Employees Like Customers

standing, people are often more attentive and engaged.

The same techniques for earning customer loyalty also works when engaging employees. After all, both efforts depend on treating people with respect. Here are two ways to use customer service tactics to improve relationships with employees.

Use a timer. Designate an allotted time for each agenda item and set a stopwatch or the timer on your phone. When time is up, assign next steps and move on.

Get real-time feedback. Don’t wait for the annual employee survey to ask people what they think. Conduct regular surveys that respect employees' time and only ask the few questions that yield the most important insights. This will generate a steady stream of ideas for improvement. Make engagement a priority for frontline managers. If customer service is a top priority for frontline managers, employee loyalty should be as well. Don’t delegate the effort to HR. Instead, ask those who closely interact with employees to make sure they’re engaged. 3 Don’t Let Your Team Delegate Back Have you ever delegated a task to a subordinate, and somehow it ends up back on your plate? Beware of this “reverse delegation.” Employees who are unsure how to do something may enlist you in doing it for them. Don’t automatically solve problems or make decisions for hesitant employees. Focus on generating alternative solutions together while making sure the employee maintains responsibility for executing. Don’t fall for it when a subordinate makes statements like, “You’ll do a better job with this.” While flattering, and possibly even true, they are often a way to get you involved when you needn’t be.

Show the cost of the meeting. At the top of the agenda, show the calculated hourly cost of having the group together. When people realize how much a meeting costs the company, they are more apt to be efficient. 5 Build Client Relationships from Afar When it comes to creating and sustaining client relationships there’s no substitute for face-to-face contact, but with people doing business globally, that’s not always possible. To build loyalty when you can’t pop in for a visit, try these two things. Use between-time to check in via e-mail. Use spare time to send clients quick notes saying hello, forwarding an article, or asking about a conference they plan to attend. Even executives with overflowing inboxes usually appreciate the gesture — especially if you don’t ask for a response. Keep a light touch through e-newsletters. A wellwritten e-newsletter with helpful content is an excellent way to remind clients you're out there and ready to help. Keep it infrequent (monthly or bimonthly) so you don’t overwhelm people.

4 Cut Your Meeting Time in Half People often set meetings for an hour because their calendars default to that time period. But you may need far less time to accomplish your work. Try these three measures to shorten your meeting: Stand up. Most people won’t linger on an issue if their feet hurt. Remove chairs from the room. The Chat We got a chance to sit down with Roger over Skype to uncover a little more about his passion, his challenges and his plans. At the beginning of the conversation, this humble giant, indicated that he was just so thankful that he can do what he gets to do. He smiled when he said further, “I don’t take myself too seriously.” Humility is key for advancement, and Roger’s humility and personable personality was more than evident while we chatted.

As the conversations progressed, Roger shared a bit about the artistes he has worked with and why he does what he does. When asked how often you provide your service, he said “24 hours a day. A reality we got to witness firsthand! Realizing that there are a lot of talented individuals who slip through the cracks of major record labels, Roger’s goal as he mentioned is to provide an alternative avenue for artists to bring their music to life and to the world. It was at this point he proceeded to share some of the challenges faced. He candidly stated money was a challenge, money to fund those persons who want to pursue their musical passion, but just don’t have the resources to do so effectively. Therefore, in his attempt to overcome this, Roger recognized how important it is to be smart about how one pursues their passion. He mentioned that “it is necessary to build relationships, and to secure investors.” He stated further “relationships are worth so much more than money.” Though his management team comprises his Business Manager and Attorney; the need for relationships with other individuals makes his task easier to execute. Delegation was the word that escaped Roger’s lips when questioned about what will make his job easier. He indicated that there is power in delegation. He urged that one should delegate responsibility (to drummers, social media personnel, arrangers, vocalists etc.), and trust in their ability to bring to the table what they need to bring to that situation. Going forward, Roger desires to have his label as a staple within the industry. He aims to develop a stable roster of artistes and events, as well as to successfully tour and make radio appearances among many other great exploits. In the short term, when asked what do you plan for 2015? He enthusiastically exclaimed: “Work, Work, Work!” During the first quarter of 2015 he will be releasing some musical pieces, and engaging in some campaigns. Also lined up is studio time with Gloria Gaynor, and Point of Grace. Roger also plans to do some Film Scoring in 2015. I guess his exclamation of work three times was not an exaggeration.

www.bajansunonline.com/MAGAZINE/ | info@bajansunonline.com | @BajanSunOnline

As the conversation was wrapping up, Roger left words of advice to upcoming music producers and artistes like himself. “Dream really big, work hard, make good

relationships, and have tunnel vision. People like winners. They won’t follow you at first, but once you start winning, they will follow.” At the end of the conversation Roger was asked one final question: ‘Do you believe that you have achieved your goal or do you think that you have more to accomplish?’; and like the humble giant he is, he answered: “ I have way more. Nobody is ever finished. I will feel like I have done something when I get the artistes I am presently working with further down the road”.

Who Are You Listening To? By Dr. Anita Davis-DeFoe

D

aily, as we go about the business of living our lives, all kinds of thoughts come to mind. In some instances, we have strong urgings, compelling directives that impact all that we say and do. Many of us may not realize it, but a large portion of our actions are dictated, practically controlled by our past experiences and the things that we think about all day long. As we start our days, many of us begin the day filled with negativity and self-criticism. Even before many of us step outside our doors, we have leveled so much harsh criticism on our selves it is enough to make even a tin man cry. We all have it, those voices that speak to us. These voices are not the whispers of our conscience, but the sounds of another nagging, judgmental and potentially destructive voice. This is the voice of the inner critic. That voice in our head that tells us that without question we are not smart enough, talented enough, pretty or handsome enough, not good enough to achieve our goals. Left unchecked the voice of the inner critic cultivates such negativity within us that we become filled with constant disappointment. We become immersed in a self-fulfilling prophecy dominated by expectations of failure, and end up going through our entire lives overpowered by imagined limitations. Many of these messages originated during childhood and our teen years when perhaps parents, teachers, family members and friends made negative comments that we

foolishly took to heart. Instead of taking these comments for what they were, one person’s opinion at one point in time, words uttered in anger; we begun to treat these statements as fact, allowing these comments to define the concepts that we created for our “real selves.”

Learning to conquer the inner critic is a tough assignment, but it is an assignment that we all must accept. Ask yourself whose life am I really living? Who am I listening to? Are you your own best friend or are you actually your own worst enemy? The first step to silence the inner critic is to acknowledge this internal turmoil, to accept that this internal division is an element of our human existence. This awareness is key to setting yourself free and unleashing your ability to change, in essence to flip your mental script. Whether you experience it as self-sabotage, low self-esteem, depression, addiction, promiscuity, or self-doubt; all of these roads lead back to those negative conscious and subconscious thoughts that have taken residence inside our heads. Decide to act for the good of yourself and not against yourself. Refuse to let self-destructive beliefs and thoughts rob you of your dreams or limit the manifestation of your potential and possibilities. When you find yourself becoming discouraged and filled with doubt, take a few moments, and ask yourself, “Who Am I Listing To?” and then choose to put your inner critic in check.

AN

OUNCE OF

PRECAUTION

IS

BETTER THAN CURE

Hard Drive Failure

I

n computing, a hard-disk failure occurs when a hard disk drive malfunctions and the stored information cannot be accessed with a properly configured computer. A disk failure may occur in the course of normal operation or due to an external factor such as exposure to fire or water or high magnetic waves, or suffering a sharp impact or environmental contamination, which can lead to a head crash. The most notorious cause of hard-disk failure is a head crash, where the internal read-and-write head of the device, usually just hovering above the surface, touches a platter, or scratches the magnetic data-storage surface. A head crash usually incurs severe data loss, and data recovery attempts may cause further damage if not done by a specialist with proper equipmentHard-drive platters are coated with an extremely thin layer of nonelectrostatic lubricant, so that the read-and-write head will simply glance off the surface of the platter should a collision occur. However, this head hovers nanometers from the platter's surface which makes a collision an acknowledged risk. Another cause of failure is a faulty air filter. Since hard drives are mechanical devices, they will all eventually fail. While some may not fail prematurely, many hard drives simply fail because of worn out parts. Can the human brain be compared to the hard drive and do they both operate similarly and are they susceptible to the same risk? We are in essence what we remember. It was after the failure of my hard drive that this fact resonated within my being. Not having documents, files, data, pictures and evidence to refer to left me feeling a sense of loss

and emptiness, almost non-existent. The reality of what was has disappeared without a trace and without warning, or so I thought was devastating. After doing lots of research and consultation with hard drive experts I now know that I was totally unaware of the warning signs and do vaguely remember a couple mentioned by the technician. Signs of Hard Disk Failure Hard-drive failure can be catastrophic or gradual. The former typically presents as a drive that can no longer be detected by CMOS setup, or that fails to pass BIOS POST so that the operating system never sees it. Gradual hard-drive failure can be harder to diagnose, because its symptoms, such as corrupted data and slowing down of the PC (caused by gradually failing areas of the hard drive requiring repeated read attempts before successful access), can be caused by many other computer issues, such as malware. A rising number of bad sectors can be a sign of a failing hard drive, but because the hard drive automatically adds them to its own growth defect table, they may not become evident to utilities such as Scandisk unless the utility can catch them before the hard drive's defect management system does, or the backup sectors held in reserve by the internal hard-drive defect management system runs out. A cyclical repetitive pattern of seek activity such as rapid or slower seek-to-end noises (click of death) can be indicative of hard drive problems. Commitment is the Key to Great Results

I

n the game of life, I have never known anyone who achieved great success by simply being interested in what they do. The road to success is littered with people who are interested in achieving something but it takes more than interest, or even passion, it takes commitment to be great at something.

This concept of interest vs. commitment is something I share with my sons regularly. At their ages, 13 and 11, this life lesson is easily illustrated through sports. My oldest son has played nearly every sport imaginable and has been interested in all of them. Guess whose time and money has been spent on his interests? After many speeches about the difference between being interested and being committed, he now understands that I am not purchasing one more football, basketball, baseball or lacrosse stick if I don’t see a commitment to the sport. I now see him practicing a little more than he was just six months ago! He is starting to understand the difference and see the direct correlation between his commitment to practice and the newfound success in his athletic life. This concept translates to all areas of life, especially business. As a CEO it is my responsibility to set expectations for our organization and show my

commitment to those expectations. I suspect there isn’t a single employee at our organization who doubts my daily commitment to the company or to my own development and success. I expect the same from each employee who joins our organization. When evaluating employees, you need to see commitment in their actions and not just hear a bunch of words about how great they want to be and what they want to accomplish. Talk doesn’t get the job done. From a sales perspective, if you have a team of people who are interested in being successful or hitting their quota, trust that you will end up investing a lot of time and money for little return. If you invest in developing and helping committed individuals become great at their craft, you’ll surely see a positive yield from that investment. Everyone has tough days, and there will be days when leaders in the organization will need to challenge personnel to be committed. How do you accomplish this? Find out what drives and motivates the team members, either personally or professionally. Ask them about their goals, what aspects of the job they like or find challenging, where they want to be professionally and even financially over a six to 18 month period.

FEB 2015

Keep these conversations restricted to timeframes that are realistic. Talking to people about five years down the road is hard for them to get their head around, especially for young people who are accustomed to instant gratification. People want success now, and few are willing to be patient. However, if you can find those who are committed, you can help them build momentum and ultimately achieve great things for themselves, for you, and ultimately, for the organization. Building a team or a company is no easy task, and if you don’t currently have committed individuals on your team, rethink your strategy and make the necessary changes. It really is that simple. To have a

great organization or a great team, you need the buy-in and commitment of those on the team. Moreover, you as the leader must have an unwavering commitment to the success of yourself and those on your team. Good leadership is invaluable to one’s career trajectory. Too often, people give half-hearted effort, leading to mediocre results. Success in anything is rarely accidental -- ask any successful individual and I bet they would tell you there is no such thing as luck. Luck is created, and it starts and stops with commitment, not interest. Commit to being successful or get ready to be passed by those who are.

IS JEALOUSY DESTROYING YOUR RELATIONSHIP? CONTINUED

On the other hand, jealousy can also be an unreasonable response which stems from insecurity and or immaturity. Sometimes an individual’s idea of commitment means total ownership and control. Of course this is a flawed idea but it exists in several relationships nonetheless. Controlling who your partner speaks to or glances at, even when such behavior is not disrespectful in any way, can mean that there are deeper issues at stake. Fear of abandonment, or fear of rejection in one partner, can contribute to such behavior. Infidelity in a previous relationship can also influence the lens through which we see daily interaction between our partner and others. This must also be confronted and exposed if a relationship is to assume a sense of normalcy. These extreme examples aside, we may experience a fleeting sense of jealousy occasionally in the course of our relationship; this is human, normal and to be expected. We are in a relationship because we desire exclusivity and at heart we do want to be the only girl or guy in the world, in our partner’s life. Having said that, being open about deep, recurring feelings of insecurity or confronting our partner if his/her actions make us feel disrespected in any way, is also vital to the life and health of our relationships.

Bajans Vs. Greek Bartender Showdown

T

hursday 22nd of January 2015 at 8 PM the Bajan Association in collaboration with Bajan Sun Online held a friendly competition at Blakey's On the Boardwalk to welcome a visitor, friend and bartender 'Nikos Arvanitis' all the way from Greece to the shores of our beloved country Barbados, the birthplace of rum. Nikos passion for his job, rum and it's history led him to connect with B.A.R.S. Inc. and in so doing, soon became a regular chat partner with the president of the association. These conversations led to him coming to Barbados to learn more about our rum and its culture as well as to fulfill his heartfelt dream, a project to look

closely at the history of rum in all its elements including the slave trade. Since he’s been here in Barbados he has been on CBC TV 8, visited Mount Gay Rum Visitors Centre, Foursquare Rum Distillery, St Nicholas Abbey, and even visited a sugar cane field! Nikos temped at Blakey's on the Boardwalk in Hastings St Michael just to have the experience of working here. The competition went smoothly and was fun, just as we intended it. The event was hosted by Raeann Beckles who is also an Executive member of the Association.

Choosing a Puppy / Dog

By Lisa White CPDT-KA

fter asking yourself why you want a dog, you need to match the best type to suit your: 

Lifestyle - dogs, especially puppies, need a lot of time and attention?

Character - do you have a lot patience or a bad temper?

Home - is it large, safe and securely enclosed?

If you just choose on a whim, without properly researching breeds, their needs and temperament, you could be stuck with an incompatible dog for the rest of its life.

If you cannot meet a puppy’s needs, then perhaps you should consider getting an adult dog. An adult dog (2 years old or older) that is healthy, happy and well adjusted is a gem. Most adult dogs are calmer and more

settled and should have gotten over the destructive stage. Why not visit the RSPCA, the Animal Control Centre, The Ark Animal Welfare Society, or the Hope Sanctuary and adopt a dog who desperately needs a home. Bear in mind though, that not only the physical development

An older dog may come with the

Whatever you choose - puppy or adult, remember dogs are social animals and cannot be locked away or left alone all day and night without regular loving attention. What Size Dog? Large dogs cost more to feed, have larger “loads”, and the cost of vitamins, flea & tick treatment, and medical care tend to be greater. They also tend to age more quickly than small breeds. FEB 2015 INGREDIENTS ½ lb. grated coconut  ¼ pt. water  ¾ lb. sugar 

BAJAN COCONUT SUGAR CAKES B

arbados is a Caribbean island with a rich choice of cuisine. With a history that incorporates many diverse cultures the island is known for its array flavours that tantalise the taste buds. Sugar Cake is made with coconut and sugar and baked in moulds. It is very popular amongst children and adults in Barbados. This very sweet dish can carry a variety of colours such as pink white or even brown depending on the flavour and food dye used in the sugar cake. These are also displayed in glass cases by vendors and sellers throughout Barbados.

Sugar cakes are one of the easiest made sweets. Just boil sugar and water together, add grated coconut until the mixtures thickens, and all the while be sure to stir constantly. Using a spoon drop the mixture onto a tray in lumps to dry. Considering how sweet the sugar cake is you should drink a nice tall glass of Barbados' very own Bowmanston Liquer to wash down the sugary after effects.

METHOD Place the sugar in a saucepan and add water. Simmer until the sugar melts. Then add the coconut. Let boil slowly, stirring constantly to avoid burning. Allow to cook until it thickens and takes on a greasy look.Drop mixture by tablespoonfuls onto a shallow plate or cookie sheet that has been moistened with water. Leave to set.

Coconut sugar cakes are known to nearly every school child in the Caribbean. These confections are one of several ‘tuck shop’ (cafeteria)staples and are also commonly available from corner stores and street vendors. Made from grated coconut they are found in several colors (brown, pink, and white). As the only binder used is crystallized sugar syrup these desserts, literally melt in your mouth.

Benefits of Private Tutoring By Raeann Beckles

I

f your aim is to improve your aptitude and knowledge base in a particular field, all education pertaining to this subject will be useful. If this statement is assumed true, then the benefits afforded by private tuition are enormous. You will have the advantage of a whole teacher to yourself, with their lesson plans and strategies of teaching designed just for you! It seems impossible to doubt the enormous benefits this will offer. In a classroom, one teacher may be faced with approximately thirty pupils, each with different abilities, different rates of learning, and individual strengths and weaknesses. Yet despite this, for the majority of the lesson the teacher will be forced to treat his class as if it contained just one student. He or she will orate from one end of the classroom, unable to gauge how effectively each pupil is assimilating the lesson. The lesson plans will be designed to fit the needs of the average pupil; and the teacher will proceed at a rate suitable for the average pupil. In this environment it is all to easy for a bright child or adolescent to fail to grasp one particular point, as the swathe of teacher talk washes over them like the unrelenting tides. It is unlikely even the best of teachers would spot the particular point of misunderstanding cast on the countenance on one pupil, hidden amongst so many other faces. To draw attention to their lack of understanding can be intimidating for the pupil: everyone else is silent, so they must have understood. Do I want to draw attention to myself? All too often the misunderstanding goes unexpressed and unaided. The obvious benefit of one to one tuition is that the tutor can tailor their teaching style to the abilities of their student. They will be able to gauge the level of the pupils understanding, and, more importantly, track down the sources of misunderstanding, and deal with them effectively. Away from the bustle of the classroom, the student will feel more able to voice their difficulties; and having just one pupil to deal with, the teacher will be more

capable of resolving them.

Filled with all the hallmarks of an Eric Jerome Dickey bestseller—erotic situations, edge-of-your-seat twists and turns, and fun, believable relationships—One Night will delight Dickey’s existing fans and lure countless new ones. A chance encounter leads to one night of passion—and spiritual redemption—between strangers. Down on her luck and two months behind on her rent, Jackie needs to make money fast, before she’s evicted from her apartment. Approaching a well-dressed man while he’s pumping gas seems like a good idea. Maybe she can convince him the box in her hands truly contains a laptop;

maybe she can convince him it’s worth $700. But she hadn’t counted on the man from Orange County being not only wealthy, but also charming. Soon she’s sold the box for $2,000 and discovered that she really doesn’t want to con this man. Although he drives away, sleet, sirens and a traffic snarl give both of them time to reconsider. Jackie uses his business card to call and invite the man to meet her at a local diner. Set against a newscast in the background— a woman has killed her three children, and a businessman has been found beaten, likely the victim of a home

invasion—their conversation turns very personal indeed. www.bajansunonline.com/MAGAZINE/ | info@bajansunonline.com | @BajanSunOnline

T

o boldly go where no woman would dare to go; writing about Valentine’s Day gifts for men, well I love a challenge. I asked some females for suggestions of gifts and romantic activities. I was told some unprintable reasons why they didn’t do anything for Valentines with their mates, past or present. Ladies really, then you would tell me that chivalry was dead and your partner didn’t understand you. First rule is Communication! Never assume he doesn’t do Valentine’s Day. He just might and wondering if you would like to. Drop hints, remarks, observe him and listen to him talk about things he may like or have an interest in. For heaven’s sake, don’t buy him a weed whacker, how would you like a blender?? Get the picture? Be romantic, plan, don’t be caught napping. If you don’t think he doesn’t deserve a lovely gift, why are you with him?

Second rule is Presentation! Don’t give him a beautifully wrapped gift, while you are in curlers and looking like an…………..unattractive person. It’s a special occasion. Some feminists would think it’s wrong, but who cares, present to him a full package, your gorgeous self and a lovely gift, who knows, he may unwrap you and leave the gift for later. First thing is, give from the heart, not to get or to see if he will buy you an expensive gift. It’s the thought that counts. Presentation is always key, okay so it’s for a guy, he won’t mind about the packaging. WRONG! Treat him with the same finesse and respect that you would love to receive. So have it wrapped, gift-bagged and tagged with all the flair in the world. Write the card yourself even if the store’s sales person wrapped it.

A F E W G I F T I DE AS His favorite cake - beautifully boxed with a special card. Presentation is always key in gift-giving. A photo of a place that’s special to both of you, with an exquisite frame and an engraving with the date or something significant to the photo. Create a treasure hunt - the only participant will be him. He will hunt for his gift with your assistance; make sure it’s worth his while. However, if he is super tired after work, don’t do this activity, it may frustrate him rather than please him. Find a super way to give him the gift and relax him the same time. Matching his and hers lingerie, don’t buy a teddy and wear it and say you got it for him, that’s tacky. Show some class get a matching set of his and hers, if not available, take the time to choose what looks like a set. Put a bow tie with his and a flower or bow for your hair as part of the set.

Decorate your home with valentine’s balloons etc, while he is asleep, start the day with breakfast...the most important meal of the day. If he is a guy that has everything, trust me he doesn’t. You will think of something to make him smile, remember, it’s all about the love.

..the list goes on.

Remember every guy is different, there is no limit to the imagination that you can put into his gift, even if you are on a budget, the gift can be lovely. Skip the ties and the wallets unless you going to make them into part of some kinky tryst or fantasy role play.

Happy Valentine’s Day and beyond Mariposa ©

Take him to dinner or make him dinner, or if possible invite him to a picnic, present him with a box with twelve envelopes, one with each month of the year on it, a scheduled activity should be written in each with a specific date .Please have a copy of these so you can honor the gift. Don’t go to the spa and then tell him that you did it for him. How about doing it with him? Couples massage, manicures, pedicures, he needs to be pampered too.

Coupons are available from the “store” you know the store I mean, follow the instructions. Nothing is better than spicing up your relationship or marriage. Some guys love chocolates, but spice it up, add something else, a bottle of wine, chocolate strawberries, a naughty card, a piece of male clothing that you think he would like, that you would like to see him wearing. Yes naughty is allowed.

FREEDOM: HOW CAN WE BREAK THESE SHACKLES We were held back .... back in time

We were used and abused

Reality became an endless void

Broken... broken spirited

That fight proved futile

bashed, lashed and even killed

so many nights we wept and cried

Killed at the whims of the then Masters

pain and hurt, that's what we felt scarred minds, bodies and souls

None of us want to be captive

friends and loved ones taken away

For to be a slave is truly mentally challenging But in this world, some chose to make a switch switching their man made shackles for religious ones

Oppressed with memories is all that remains

thinking everything will be okay

within our minds That we can stand today to break free

Break free of those shackles that once bound us in captivity, enslaving us creating diversity among each and everyone

We were once tools tools of the master trade

But how can this be? we have become a part A detrimental part of history History... how can this be erased

To this day it still remains on a lesser scale but we shall continue this fight for its our right to be free

freedom of mind, freedom of speech liberated for what we stand for we must all come together and be one One united family with one common goal This goal is.... FREEDOM.

FEB 2015 Carlos Jesus Martinez Dominguez

“My name is Carlos Jesus Martinez Domingo or FEEGZ. I am a graffiti-influenced visual artist who draws inspiration from the culture and related Histories of Hip Hop, New York City, and the Caribbean. My agency as an artist is born from the intersection of my identity as a Dominican-Puerto Rican American man and the inherent tensions that exist within our systemically ingrained system of beliefs. I have exhibited at El Museo del Barrio, Studio Museum in Harlem and Centro Leon Jimenez Museum among other institutions and galleries. Shows I am particularly proud to have exhibited in include Caribbean Crossroads of the World and El Museoʼs 2011 Biennial the S files. My work conveys my anxiety and thrill regarding history, how that history manifests in the present, and presents implications for the future. While I have much respect and pride in my cultures, I would rather shine a bright light on things some believe we should reexamine as opposed to playing the cheerleader for them.”

Moses Ros-Suarez Moses Ros‐Suárez is best known for his intense paintings and sculptures that transform common objects in his characteristically expressionist style. His large graphics of figures and objects explore themes such as AIDS awareness, the global economic crisis, and personal versus national identity and power. Ros--‐Suárez has had one--‐person exhibitions at museums in the United States and the Caribbean, including the Yeshiva University Museum, New York; the Paterson Museum, New Jersey; and the Instituto de Cultura y Arte in Santiago, Dominican Republic. The New York Department of Cultural Affairs and the Bronx Council for the Arts have awarded him commissions for public sculptures, and the Metropolitan Transit Authority for stained glass windows. A licensed architect in the state of New York, Ros-Suárez is a graduate of the Pratt Institute.

Francks Francois Deceus - Haiti Born in Haiti in 1966, Décéus and his family moved to Brooklyn, New York when he was nine years old. It wasn’t until he graduated from Long Island University with a degree in Sociology that he turned to making art as a career. Stylistically his work incorporates many of the influences and aesthetic forms of the 40’s and 50’s visual artists like William Johnson and Jacob Lawrence, and reverberates with some of the artistic strains of his native Haiti. His modernist style combines figurative, abstract and layered elements and relies heavily on a simplification of form and function. Décéus was profiled in a 1998 issue of the International Review of African American Art as “one of the leading young modern painters of his generation, whose work depicts a high degree of sensitivity to social issues and his culture”. He is currently featured in “100 New York Painters”, an extensive survey of significant New York painters and their widely diverse works. His work has been commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York. His work is in the permanent collection of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and Xavier University and a legion of private collections.

FEB 2015 entrepreneurs Steve too has faced some challenges as he identified that “encountering dishonest individuals who can not only impede one’s progress but can be a debilitating source of discouragement” has posed as a challenge. But Steve have dealt with these challenges by following the route taken by King David. He explained that “I do nothing of my own volition, instead I pray and let God guide me accordingly. As a result I got a job in the public relations department of the MiLAT Military Academy. It’s funny because I get paid to shoot photographs and video.”

On leaving the army Steve was given the opportunity to learn a new skill and he opted for television production where he gained exposure to the video camera and basic editing. As a result of that Steve directed four short films (three experimental and one narrative) all of which were screened at the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival. Two were aired on local Television and one was used in Mexico for educational purposes. Some of the photographs Steve captured were also published in the Trinidad Express and Newsday newspapers while a few have been published in the MACO magazine. Steve’s clients range from private individuals to corporate entities and are predominantly based in Trinidad with a few foreign based clients. For Steve, photography and videography is more of a passion rather than a pursuit for revenue. He stated: “I am really passionate about taking pictures and doing it largely for its intrinsic value.” However, like most

Given there are two sides of the coin; with the challenges came the achievements, and for Steve his achievements are very much inspiring. Steve’s achievements include providing news footage for an on-line news agency in Helsinki and having photographs that he shot loop on a cinema screen at the premier opening of a feature film. The movie was shot on location in Trinidad and Steve was able to take pictures of the crew as they worked. It was great not that the photos were shown but that the Rafy Stills, and the film stills photographer commended Steve on his work and encouraged him to become a still photographer. .

Looking forward Steve desires to have his own creative space, and as he explains, if not a studio he would like an old wooden house that has its own unique and subtle vibration. Tech Talk Q&A with Steve Hernandez: Q: What role has technology played in developing your business? A: Technology has been a double-edged sword.
