Design Symposium
In an effort to engage the Menifee community, a digital survey called a “Thought Exchange was used to create conversation about the potential vision for the District and Menifee Valley Middle School. The Thought Exchange produced significant participation, whose results are shown to the left. The overall results of the thought exchange led to the creation of a new focus for the campus in the Visual and Performing Arts.

CAMPUS FOCUS: Visual & Performing Arts Following the Thought Exchange, the district hired Architects from the BakerNowicki Design Studio to facilitate a community engagement process called a Design Symposium. This Design Symposium gathered the input from teachers, staff, administrators, and community to generate a facilities master plan that would serve as the basis of future work on the Menifee Valley Middle School Campus. Proposed scope and phases shown later in this book originated from the ideas and vision generated from this community process.
Paloma High School
The project site is located within the heart of Menifee, California in a low density residential neighborhood. Menifee, as a whole, is experiencing a period of growth and increases in student enrollment district-wide. The project was first imagined as a portable replacement project to replace the more than 40 portables currently used to house most of the student population. Future enrollment is expected to increase over the next decade requiring the construction of additional facilities to accommodate growth. Final design enrollment is targeted at 1200 students. The campus is one of the oldest campuses in the district. It is served by a septic sewer system. The local historical society, housed in an adjacent facility, provided some historical photographs of the region as a context to the legacy of the community.
Proposed Sewer Point of Connection
Site Aerial Plan
Near the site are agricultural areas, residential communities, and planned residential developments. Located to the south is the local fire station. North and East of the campus is Paloma High School and the freeway.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS Due to the age of the campus and lack of surrounding development, the campus is currently supported by a Septic System with a leach field located in the play field area. This leach field is located ABOVE the buildings, requiring sewage to be pumped up to the leach field level. This system presents a number of air quality and maintenance concerns for the site and district. As a component of future projects, the district is evaluating connecting to a new sewer line located due east of the project site. The map above indicates the site and the proposed point of connection.

listed as a Mediterranean climate or Dry-Summer Subtropical. As a city, Menifee experiences 263 sunshine days and only 35 days with measurable precipitation annually. The period of April through November is warm to hot and dry with average high temperatures of 83 - 101°F and lows of 32 - 50°F, though in the summer, temperatures can easily reach above 100, and occasionally above 105. The period of November through March is somewhat rainy. At times, during the Winter, large dust storms start to form due to the large mass of humidity, and low, and flat land that is there. on Garbani include only half the proposed street improvements for the roadway. The remaining improvements will not be completed until the adjacent property is developed. This lack of street width is likely the primary cause of current vehicular congestion on site. The architects will be reviewing other onsite options for relieving congestion for drop off and pickup with proposed site plans later in this document. 2019 BakerNowicki Design Studio | 9
Collaboration: To facilitate new trends in collaborative learning environments, planning for the campus was structured around creating active outdoor spaces that tie together multiple types of teaching spaces. This helps the campus to use all spaces for learning and socialization. These collaborative environments can be seen in the following: • •
• • • •
Outdoor “Main Street” Collaboration areas allow for Small and Medium Scale GroupLearning. Classrooms are grouped into academic clusters with primary entry points facilitate identity, allow for branding, host larger scale group instruction, and allow for socialization. Flex Labs designed around a Maker Space model allow for use by Science, Arts, & Exploratory Learning. Covered Outdoor Learning Areas, double as socialization spaces. “String Plans” Allow for Max flexibility as programs change. Paired Classrooms allow for shared teaching in select areas.

Site Master Plan To address the rapidly changing needs of educational environments, academic spaces have been organized into clusters. These clusters allow the opportunity to equip classrooms with a variable range of spaces to accommodate multiple scales of instruction and collaboration.
3
1 Outdoor Amphitheater: (future work) hosting full campus events, promotions, and student performances. Expected to support the Visual and Performing Arts identity and activities. 2 Academic Quad: An academic and socialization space filled with shade and seat walls for small and medium group gatherings. The space will be easily supervised by perimeter buildings through ample glazing. 3 Main Street Collaboration Spaces: primary circulation routes with widened pathways to allow for small scale gatherings for outdoor collaborative work groups. The spaces are passively supervised by glazing in classrooms.
4 Outdoor Laboratories, outdoor work areas adjacent to flex labs that allow for an overflow space for lab activities. Large panelized doors open onto each space allowing for a natural extension of the instruction space to the outdoor.
6 Civic Entry Court: Entry spaces that allow for student queuing and waiting on either side of the secure fence line. This provides a natural location for supervision by staff before and after the bell in necessary transition times.
5 Pedestrian Axis: Each pedestrian axis connects from north to south and east to west. They provide the primary pedestrian connection between separate portions of campus. Several seat walls are located on the perimeter of these axes to allow students to socialize and “see and be seen.
7 Lunch Shelter Extension: These sun shade elements provide a secondary shade location and staging area for students in transition to and from lunch, allowing staff to control the transition of students between lunch periods with separate areas.
