BAKERSFIELD MARATHON Runners, Volunteers, Cheerleaders and Supporters Unite for BIG Race
G
et ready, Bakersfield – there’s a big race that’s fast-approaching with an even bigger award! The third annual Bakersfield Marathon happens on Sunday, Nov. 18, and includes a USATF-certified full marathon, half marathon, half relay and 5K. This year’s finisher medallion is the largest in the Western United States and honors Kern County’s rich agricultural history. We’re expecting close to 2,400 runners representing more than 200 cities across 20+ states! To welcome and support our large collection of participants, we’ll be looking for hundreds of local volunteers to assist with course control, water stations, start and finish lines, the beer garden and the half relay exchange at Bakersfield High School. Starting the day before the race, participants and supporters can attend the Health & Fitness Expo at Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to picking up race information and lots of swag, around 30 vendors will be showcasing their products and services. Come and visit some of the exhibitors like Pair & Marotta Physical Therapy, Fleet Feet, A3, lululemon, Jamba Juice, Rodan + Fields and more. Since this is a true community event, it is strongly encouraged to show your spirit and cheer on family and friends along the race route. The race starts and finishes at California State University, Bakersfield, with water stops through dozens of iconic neighborhoods including Oleander, Downtown Bakersfield, Westchester, Panorama Bluffs and finally along the scenic Kern River Parkway, where friendly faces, funny signs and encouragement will energize runners to the finish line. Participants will be welcomed by a crowd of people cheering on the runners as they complete their race into the Finisher’s Village at CSU Bakersfield. This all-day festival is open to the public and will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m. with food trucks, a beer garden, live music by Last Call and DJ Danny Hill from Energy 95.3. As we’re planning for 50 percent more participants than in years past, Bakersfield will be welcoming more than 700 participants and their families from outside the community. “Our visiting runners have been incredibly impressed by our energetic, cheering crowds scattered throughout town,” said David Milazzo, co-founder and executive director.
METRO | PAGE 8
Residents transform into city ambassadors during race weekend, and it’s critically important we act as stewards of our community as we host runners from across the nation. The Bakersfield Marathon is greatly appreciative of the support from its sponsors, including presenting sponsor Dignity Health – Mercy & Memorial Hospitals. Other major sponsors include: CSUB Alumni Association, Deprigo Media, The Wonderful Company, Providence Strategic Consulting, Chevron, Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce, GET Bus, The Broken Yolk Café, Coconut Joe’s Beach Grill, Motor City, Barber Honda, Jim Burke Ford Lincoln, Advance Beverage Co., Temblor Brewing Co., Pair & Marotta Physical Therapy, BSNF Railway, Chain Cohn Stiles and LuLulemon, along with many other local and national supporters. For race registration, volunteer opportunities or for more information, visit www.runbakersfield.com.
Volunteers needed!
(About 750 of them, to be exact.) Be a part of 750 community members supporting our local and visiting runners. Positions are available at the start and ďŹ nish lines, throughout the course as monitors, handing water to runners, and much more. All volunteers will receive a Marathon volunteer T-shirt and a breakfast burrito from The Broken Yolk Cafe. Contact us at 661.249.6450 or directors@activebakersďŹ eld.org. Sponsorship & volunteer information also available at runbakersďŹ eld.com.

LEADERSHIP BAKERSFIELD
G
overnment Day gave Leadership Bakersfield participants a crash course into the inner workings of local municipalities and how to advocate for issues impacting the business community. Participants attended a joint session of the Chamber’s Government Review Council, where Mayor Karen Goh and City Councilmember Chris Parlier, discussed what life is like as an elected official. The class members interacted with a panel of speakers and heard firsthand about the pros and cons of the City and County tax measures that are on the upcoming November ballot. Other topics covered included homelessness, California's energy future and economic development. The Chamber would like to thank Leadership Bakersfield Advisory Day Chairs Jeff Flores, County of Kern; and John Nilon, Retired County of Kern. A special thank you to our program underwriter Wells Fargo and day sponsor Tejon Indian Tribe.
