MESSAGE FROM THE

his summer has been an exciting time for the Chamber and our community. As we celebrate our past in unique ways and look toward the future, I am very proud of the work we’re doing at the Chamber to promote our community and shape that future. We were honored to host last month’s State of the City address. We heard from City Manager Alan Tandy, in what Nick Ortiz was his last State of the City speech. Mr. Tandy updated attendees on the progress the city is making thanks to the funds from the PSVS measure, the city’s sales tax initiative. Also, Mayor Karen Goh spoke to a sold-out crowd about the new narrative we’re writing for our community. That narrative is one of opportunity, community and clear-eyed realism about our area’s challenges, and it was picked up in a story published by the Washington Post that same

week. Characterizing our fair city as “booming” the article highlighted ways that Bakersfield (and other inland cities) are attracting talent and becoming a focal point for job creation and housing development as compared to coastal California cities. Also last month, Academy Award Winning Documentarian Ken Burns was in town to preview his new PBS series on Country Music. The 16-hour documentary, sponsored by Bank of America, chronicles the history of the music genre. One interesting thing is that there isn’t just a segment or episode dedicated to the Bakersfield Sound. The stories of Dust Bowl refugees, and the rise of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard are woven throughout the series. The story of our sound is the story of so many families that traveled west looking for a better life. It’s the same story that the Washington Post is telling today, with a slightly different spin, as we’re attracting people east from cities as opposed to the small farming towns of the Dust Bowl migration. That Bakersfield is seen by so many as a place of optimism and opportunity, portends exciting times indeed.

Hailing from Toledo, Ohio, Cathy and her family moved to Visalia, Calif., in 1975. They later Cathy Albyn moved to Santa Rosa. She moved back to the Central Valley after graduating from Piner High School. It was not until 2018 that she and her husband made the move to Kern County. Between them, Cathy and Gary have four children and four grandchildren, with a little peanut on the way in December! In her free time, Cathy enjoys being with her family, hiking with her dog Sophie, and contributing to church life.

n July 18, Alan Tandy took the stage for his final State of the City address before his upcoming retirement in December after serving 27 years as City Manager of Bakersfield. The event was the largest State of the City to date, selling out in anticipation to hear from both Mr. Tandy as well as Bakersfield Mayor Karen Goh. Each gave updates on the current city outlook covering topics such as economic development, homelessness, the city’s financial status and efforts to beef up public safety.
