MESSAGE FROM THE
A
large piece of the plot of George R.R. Martin’s "Game of Thrones" series (both the books and the TV show), revolves around the seasons – apart from competing monarchs, epic battles and dragons that is. The characters have intense conversations and prognostications about the end of the peaceful “long Summer” and what darkness the “coming Winter” will portend. One character mused that “Summer will end soon enough.” And while the long Summer of the TV Show ended earlier this year, ours is only just beginning. From a purely meteorological standpoint, Summer in Bakersfield is fairly intense, and it’s usually the time when many of our neighbors flee to the beach; but, at the Chamber it is actually our busiest time of the year. The bulk of our signature events take place between early June and mid-September, but 2019 has been especially busy. We are so lucky to have the financial support from our members and the volunteer support from hundreds of local business leaders. For just a snapshot of the activity, over the last six weeks your Chamber has: • led a delegation to Sacramento for our annual legislative trip; • held Beautiful Bakersfield, our largest event of the year; • graduated the 2018-2019 class of Leadership Bakersfield; • held two Report from the Capitol events with Senators Grove and Hurtado; • presented the BYP Summit professional development event for our emerging leaders; • provided our members with a mid-year labor law update; and • held two networking mixers.
While we are providing all of these unique opportunities for our members, simultaneously we are still working on strategic initiatives and programs, and holding our regular committee, council and board meetings. As you flip through the pages of this Metro, you’ll see that from the State of the City to the Chamber Social, there are so many ways to get involved and support the Chamber and Nick Ortiz your community. We’re excited to hear from Mayor Karen Goh and City Manager Alan Tandy in a couple of weeks at the annual State of the City forum about the course of the city, and what we can expect over the next few months as Measure N funded hiring and improvements begin to have an impact. We are also looking forward to hosting the Chamber Social at the Bakersfield Museum of Art, a night of fun to network with your fellow Chamber members. Before the Summer is over, we will have recruited the 2019-2020 class of Leadership Bakersfield, begun the process of recruiting the 2020 Youth Leadership Bakersfield class, and begun planning our fall events. But most importantly we always want to hear from you about ways we can help to promote your business and meet your needs. Our team of staff and amazing volunteers at the Chamber hopes you have time to relax and unwind, but please also think about how you can engage to improve your career, business or community. For though it feels like the heat will never die down, eventually, winter will come.
STATE OF THE CITY
R

“The Chamber is always proud to co-host this annual event, but especially this year” said Chamber President/CEO Nick Ortiz. “as we demonstrate how the business community and our partners in government are working together to build a stronger, better Bakersfield.” This year’s event will be held at the Bakersfield Marriott at the Convention Center, 801 Truxtun Ave. Check-in begins at 11:30 a.m., with the program following from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $65 per person. REPORT FROM THE CAPITOL On June 18, the Chamber continued our Report from the Capitol series with State Senate Minority Leader Shannon Grove. Senator Grove addressed the room on the issues that are coming from Sacramento — the good, the bad and the ugly. Report from the Capitol is a series event at the Chamber where we bring in our legislative representatives from Washington D.C. and Sacramento to give a report on issues that affect Bakersfield business. This was the Chamber’s third Report from the Capitol of the year, previously hosting Congressman TJ Cox and Senator Melissa Hurtado. Senator Grove spoke on some of the year's worst bills such as AB 5, AB 36 and AB 375. A few notable good bills came directly from our local representatives such as SB 224 (Grove), SB 559 (Hurtado) and AB 289 (Fong). Senator Grove stressed the importance that the roll of advocacy plays in Sacramento and how the business community should continue to voice their concerns in the Capitol. Senator Grove took office in January 2019 and was quickly elected by her peers to serve as the Republican Minority Leader in the Senate. She represents the 16th Senate District.

BYP SUMMIT The business world can be emotionally draining for a young person, not to mention stressful and time-consuming. Sometimes it helps to know you're not alone out there. At the half-day Bakersfield Young Professionals 2019 Summit on June 20, more than 100 millennials gathered to hear tips on surviving and thriving as a business person in the modern world. The third annual event, hosted by the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce and targeted at 21- through 40-year-olds, was intended to help prepare the next generation of business leaders to engage with one another and become more involved with civic efforts to improve the community. Chamber President and CEO Nick Ortiz said the Bakersfield Young Professionals formed six years ago in recognition that the millennial generation is being thrust into a position of leadership sooner than earlier generations. The goal, he said, is to give young people the tools and networks that challenge requires. "It's all meant to connect young professionals and, hopefully, connect them to the chamber," he said. Sharing the lineup with individual speakers inside the Aera Energy Conference Center was a panel of business owners and executives who talked about how they stay relevant in the information age while also balancing business demands with the need to keep up with life outside the office. "I think it's important to be open-minded and fluid," said the owner of Bella at the Marketplace, Heather Abbott. She also emphasized the wisdom of relying on different people's skills and specialties.
Others on the panel told about their immersion in work and information. For example, G Riar, owner of four UPS stores and Bakersfield marketing agency Deprigo, said he spends up to three hours daily reading blogs and other online content — not social media or books, however — as a way of educating himself on timely trends. The burden can be very heavy, said Allie Mae Perkins, owner of make-up and women's beauty business The Beautiful Life LLC, said she has to turn off her phone on Sundays to make sure she spends quality time with her family. "Being an entrepreneur is not for the weak," she said. "It's hard for me to slow down." Derek Jeffery, vice president and general manager of KGET-17, said he copes with what can seem a deluge of incoming information by turning off all smartphone notifications except the ring of his phone. "People are like, 'I texted you four times,'" he told the audience. "I said, 'You know what, you should've called me.'" Attendees said they appreciated hearing others' stories as they chart their own future in business. Tim Davis, a real estate portfolio manager and events-service company owner who also manages leases for The Abbey Co., said he was inspired to hear how Jeffery worked his way up at the TV station. "You can grow to hold a leadership position in a field that you love," Davis said. Bakersfield Museum of Art Curator Rachel Magnus said her favorite takeaway from the summit was that challenges that may appear industry-specific often turn out to transcend individual lines of work. "I think that makes it more palatable," she said, dealing with problems that aren't so isolated after all. Two local employees of Dignity Health, Strategic Development Coordinator Jesus Martell Gonzalez and Business Development and Physician Relations Director Roya Armon, said it was inspiring to hear how other millennials have achieved business success. "It's good to know you're not alone in the business hustle," Armon said. By John Cox | jcox@bakersfield.com

A memorial bench was dedicated to honor the lives of innocent victims of gang violence and bring attention to this issue.
Team 2 worked to renovate the Dream Center’s nursery room by refurbishing the library nook and adding books and toys, fixing up the craft and learning area, painting the walls and restoring the flooring. In addition to renovating the nursery room, Team 2 also reorganized the storage room and added three new signs to the building.

Team 4
With the desire to help improve the atmosphere of the Alliance Against Family Violence & Sexual Assault, Team 3 worked together to improve the curb appeal of the external garden and repainted all the conference rooms and business areas as well as the internal hallways. In addition, they modernized the center’s library and donated funds to replace the carpeting. With these renovations, Team 3 was able to provide an uplifting environment for current and future recipients.
Team 4 worked with the League of Dreams, a sports league that provides sports training, team camaraderie and competitive sporting opportunities to athletes with physical and developmental disabilities. At the Fruitvale Norris Park, they widened the dugouts and walking paths, added sustainable fencing and shades, replaced the benches, and gave the dugout areas a fresh coat of paint. They presented the revitalization on March 17 with their ribbon cutting ceremony.
