Bakersfield Marathon Turns 4! Contributed by Bakersfield Marathon Board Bakersfield streets will again be filled with runners for the fourth annual Bakersfield Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 17. Along with the scheduled races – a USATF-certified full marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K – this community-wide event offers something for everyone. Starting the day before the race, participants and supporters can attend the Health & Fitness Expo at Bakersfield High School from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to picking up race information and a ton of swag, more than two dozen vendors will be showing off their wares. Come and visit lululemon, Stockdale Podiatry Group, Fleet Feet, Dignity Health, Trispokes, Edraldo Headphones, Bucket List Running, End of the Trail, Viponic and many others. Since this is a true community event, it is strongly encouraged to show your spirit and cheer on family and friends along the race route. The race starts and finishes on the CSUB campus, with water stops through dozens of iconic neighborhoods including the Stockdale Financial District, Oleander, Downtown Bakersfield, Westchester, Kern County Museum, Bakersfield College, Panorama Bluffs and finally along the scenic Kern River Parkway. This year’s participants will be welcomed by a crowd of friendly faces as they complete their race into the Finish Line Festival at CSUB. This all-day festival is open to the public and will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. with food trucks, a beer garden and live music from local band, Last Call. “We’re very excited for year four”, said David Milazzo, co-founder and executive director. “Our team is working to enhance every element of the day. From the course to the swag to our Finish Line Festival – we’re expecting an amazing weekend.” To pay homage to the local music scene, and to tie in with the Bakersfield and Kern County re-branding efforts, The Bakersfield Sound is highlighted in a series of guitarinspired finisher’s medallions.

he Leadership Bakersfield class got an inside look into the community’s health care industry, and learned more about the challenges facing social services on Oct. 18. Health and Human Services Day introduced participants to local organizations and resources available to people in need with tours of the Bakersfield Homeless Center, the Dream Center and County Emergency Operations Center. Assemblyman Fong addressed the class and discussed ongoing efforts to combat homelessness in Kern County. He stressed the importance of continued collaboration between the city and the county regarding the additions of low barrier shelters within the community. In addition, he encouraged continued involvement with service providers and local governments to find collaborative solutions. "Dignity Health’s Bakersfield Memorial Hospital welcomed the 2019-2020 Leadership Bakersfield Class for a State of the Union on Healthcare presentation by Kenneth Keller, President and CEO, followed by a Workplace Wellness training by Sean Kenny, and an interactive tour showcasing surgical technological advancements. The class had the opportunity to begin their tour on a high note with a photo-op on the helipad, followed by a rotation through our cardiac cath lab and the bi-plane suite. Here, they learned about interventional techniques for cardiac and stroke treatment, including Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), a permanent implant known as the Watchman to treat atrial fibrillation, leadless pacemaker implantation, thrombectomy, and endovascular coiling. The team also learned about robotic surgery in the main Operating Room by participating in a hands-on demonstration of the da Vinci robot, and rounded out the tour by learning about the hospital’s various intensive care units (ICUs) including the Neuro Critical Care Unit (NCC), the Pediatric ICU (PICU), and the Grossman Burn Center at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital." - Patty Keefer, MBA Market Development Representative, Dignity Health.
