MESSAGE FROM THE
A
s the last quarter of 2019 begins, this is an important time for any business or organization to take stock of where they are, what they’re doing and their plans for the future. October usually kicks off a wind down at the Chamber – fewer events, planning for the year ahead and budget decisions. This October is particularly important for us. First, we’ve been working on some major Nick Ortiz projects over the last two years that have moved beyond conception and planning and into implementation, and 2020 represents the Chamber’s 100th anniversary. The Regional Branding Initiative, “Boundless & Better” is not only a prime example of a major project that is now in the process of implementation, it has also compelled us to look at how we describe the Chamber and our mission. Not only who are we to our members, but who are we to our community. The new tagline of the Chamber, “Building Something Better” and new mission statement of “Our business is a better Bakersfield,” not only describe what we do, they also provide us with an aspirational platform for how we serve our stakeholders. Building Something Better not only speaks to our goals for the city and our community,
METRO | PAGE 4
it describes what our members can do when they engage with us. They can build a stronger, more profitable business; they can hone their leadership skills; they can become more informed about their community to truly understand the issues shaping it; and they can hopefully join us in working toward a brighter future for Bakersfield and Kern County. But this relationship cannot be a one-way street, we need to hear from you about your needs and how we can serve you to assist you in building your own personal “something better.” In the next week, you will see a poll asking about the Chamber, our services and your expectations. We will try to keep it as painless as possible, but I really encourage you to help us in charting a course for the Chamber and our community. Your honest and specific feedback is so important to understanding the needs of our members, and positioning ourselves to meet them. As we approach our 100-year mark, we are more grateful than ever for the support of our local business community. We want to make sure that over the next century we can continue to be your resource, your champion, and a catalyst for building something better.

SAVE THE DATE – LABOR LAW & HR FORUM – SEXUAL HARASSMENT TRAINING – OCTOBER 30
T
he Chamber is offering a timely sexual harassment training at our next Labor Law & HR Forum on Oct. 30. Current law in the State of California, requires two hours of sexual harassment training every two years for all supervisors who work for private companies that engage or employ 50 or more individuals (including temporary workers, independent contractors and employees outside of California) and all government employers. Beginning in 2020, all California businesses with 5 or more employees will be required to train their supervising employees. Join local employment and labor law attorney Jefferson X. Eberhardt, of Young Wooldridge LLP, for an interactive session that meets California’s specific training requirements as well as valuable tools to reduce your liability. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m., with the program following from 8-10 a.m. Cost is $45 and includes breakfast and a completion certificate valid for two years. Secure your seat and call 661-327-4421 to RSVP. Cancellations must be received 24 hours in advance to preclude billing.
