Message from the CEO
Hello Chamber Members,
As we transition from hail to hot weather, the Chamber is excited to embrace some changes in our programs and events. We recently brought back "Coffee with the Chamber," with special guest speaker Bob Meadows from Valley Strong Credit Union. Bob re-caffeinated us with his contagious positivity, shared networking tips and helped attendees learn more about the value of membership. Thank you, Bob!
I'm also proud to mention that I was inducted into the Rotary Club of Bakersfield, also known as Downtown Rotary. The Downtown Rotary has been a driving force in our community for over a century, embodying Rotary's motto of "service over self." It's an honor to be part of this community of distinguished servant leaders, and I'm excited to help serve our Chamber members and community as a Rotarian.
As we approach May, a month of celebrations, including graduations and Mother's Day, we urge you to explore our 'Shop Local Shop Now' campaign. This initiative showcases our exceptional members, who are the backbone of our community. Let's unite to support them and acknowledge their tireless efforts that enrich our community.
Congratulations to all the nominees of the Beautiful Bakersfield Awards, presented by Valley Strong Credit Union. Please look for the social media kit to share your nomination on your favorite social platform easily. Ag Day
Exploring the Heart of Agriculture
In March, the 2024 Leadership Bakersfield class immersed themselves in the world of agriculture. Agriculture Day was led by Ariana Joven, Government Affairs Manager with the Wonderful Company and Rachel Nettleton, Executive Director with the Kern County Farm Bureau. The goal was to deepen the leadership students' appreciation for the food they consume and the farmers and ranchers that help put food on the shelves. With over 30 leadership students, the day was centered around educating, inspiring and immersing these individuals into one of the nation’s top agricultural producing counties – Kern County.
The itinerary for Agriculture Day consisted of three distinct tours that provided insight into different facets of Kern County’s agricultural production and heritage. The first stop took the group to the Wonderful Halos production facility, where they witnessed firsthand the intricate process behind the packaging of these citrus fruits. Next, the class ventured to DM Camp & Sons where they learned about the family’s deep rooted agricultural history in Kern County. During the tour, the class had the opportunity to learn about the evolution of farming techniques and how machinery has evolved over time. They also got to learn fun facts about almonds from the beginning stages of growth.
For the last tour of the day, the group visited TLO Wines, where the Director of Marketing Avery Zaninovich shared her family’s legacy of winemaking and the artistry behind crafting their fine wines. The leadership class had the opportunity to savor not only the wine, but also the story of the family’s passion behind the creation of their wines and their downtown tasting room.
Throughout the tours, there were multiple speakers that covered diverse topics such as the agricultural history in Kern County and California, agricultural real estate, water regulations and the crucial role of the Agricultural Commissioner. These discussions broadened the students’ understanding towards agriculture and sparked meaningful conversations about the complexities and challenges facing the agricultural community.
The enthusiasm and curiosity from this year’s leadership class showcased the importance of days like this in creating a deeper connection between consumers and producers. As the day ended, the class left with a newfound knowledge and appreciation for our local agricultural heritage. With this knowledge, we hope these leaders felt inspired to advocate and support our agricultural industry to ensure a positive future for generations to come.
Education Day
Cradle-to-Career Programs and School Innovations
The 2024 Leadership Bakersfield class experienced “Education Day” in April, sponsored by Kern County Superintendent of Schools (KCSOS) and the Grimm Family Education Foundation (GFEF).
The participants learned about cradle-to-career programs and beyond. The day started at the Christine Lizardi Student Service Center with a panel of interactive speakers from KCSOS: Kimberly Graham from Kern Education Pledge and K-16 Education Collaborative, Dr. Kierstin Webb from College and Career Programs and Anita Cruz from the Community Schools Initiative.
Next, they visited various school sites throughout Kern, to learn how schools work to meet the needs of all students in unique ways. The C. W. Richardson Child Development Center provides education and support services for children from birth to five years of age. Direct services are provided to students from families that meet program eligibility requirements. Principal Angelina Bertran-Harris kicked off the visit with a tour followed by a parade attended by parents.
The class proceeded to Grow Academy Arvin to learn from Grow Public Schools and the GFEF. Rick Esquivel, Chief of Schools for Grow Public Schools, and RJ Valentino, President of GFEF, delved into charter education and how the Grow Public Schools model has pioneered educational choice in our community, dispelling misconceptions about charter
schools. Our class then embarked on a student-led tour of the campus, exploring the Edible Schoolyard and learning a homemade lemonade recipe from fellow students.
On to Del Oro High School, Kern High School District’s newest campus serving areas of East Bakersfield, Greenfield and Lamont. A tour was provided by Assistant Principal Chris Dutton and Associated Student Body (ASB) leadership. In this high-tech campus, students feel like their education is a collaboration with teachers where they are seen and heard. The school also provides counselors, tutors and mental health providers available to students in need.
Back in downtown Bakersfield, the class returned to the Christine Lizardi Frazier Student Services Center to conclude the day. Dr. Vernon Harper, Interim President of Cal State Bakersfield, delivered an exceptionally inspiring message to the class. His tenure as Provost of CSUB during the Covid-19 pandemic underscored the importance of standing firm in your beliefs, regardless of the challenges faced.
Dr. John Mendiburu, KCSOS Superintendent, closed out the day with a personal and inspiring message about leadership and collaboration. All in all, a very successful day!
Thank you to our Day Sponsors
House of Flowers
Blooming in Bakersfield for 16 Years
Planting the seed
While growing up, Amanda Klawitter was captivated by her mother Diana’s entrepreneurial and creative spirit, igniting her artistic drive and strengthening their bond through a shared love of nature and art. Now, the mother-and-daughter-duo has spent the past 16 years as co-owners of House of Flowers, a locally owned floral studio in Downtown Bakersfield.
As a child, Amanda’s favorite hobbies were spending time in their backyard nursery and being in nature. This resulted in a close relationship with nature. She recalls her mom, Diana’s influence in instilling that within her.
Amanda recalls, “Some of my best childhood memories with my mom were going camping, collecting things in nature and trying to create art from that.”
After working at a flower shop and finding her passion in flower design, Amanda proposed their own shop to Diana. With a background as a
business owner and an adventurous outlook, she enthusiastically responded, “Yes, let’s do it.”
The name “House of Flowers” is a callback to the shop’s initial start in Amanda’s home. It is also inspired by how they want their customers to feel when they walk in. They strive to create a cozy, welcoming atmosphere.
“When you come in here, it’s important that you feel like you’re home. It’s our house and everybody else’s, too,” says Diana.
Their relationship as mother and daughter is not just a familial bond but a strong foundation for their business. Diana fondly describes them as “best friends” and “yin and yang” with their complementary skills. Amanda, the designoriented one, taught Diana everything she knew about flower arrangements, while Diana, with her business acumen, guided Amanda on the path of entrepreneurship.
There’s something special about seeing something bloom because it captures a moment in time, and it’s really cool that we get to share that with people
- Amanda Klawitter
The nature of business
As a locally owned and family-operated business, House of Flowers stands out with its distinct design, wide range of flowers and passion for serving the community.
Their unique approach to design gives each of their arrangements a personal touch. Diana and Amanda design all of their flower arrangements, unlike large chain retailer companies that use premade templates from wire services.
Amanda believes every business reflects its owners, and the duo wants to set their own path by avoiding commonly used industry arrangements. She happily notes that when customers see their products, they can immediately say, “That’s from House of Flowers.”
When putting arrangements together, Amanda likes to envision the recipient, asking herself, “Do they like designer items, or do they spend a lot of time outside?”
“Supporting small businesses is really important because they are the ones who are helping shape culture,” Amanda says. “Small businesses pay attention to what the community needs.”
“It’s important to consider those things because that influences what type of flowers they might like,” she says.
This attention to detail and individualized care allows them to conduct successful campaigns, including their annual Mother’s Day catalog.
Diana and Amanda understand the special feeling of receiving flowers and take pride in playing a part in it. Amanda compares it to the first time a child

sees a dandelion and blows on its petals. “There’s something special about seeing something bloom because it captures a moment in time, and it’s really cool that we get to share that with people,” she says.
Their passion for flowers hasn't waned even though they’re around flowers daily. They still have fun and describe themselves as “kids in a candy store” when picking flowers to sell.
They love going to the Los Angeles flower market and testing different varieties. Their flowers come from all over the world, from Southern California to Holland to Japan.
House of Flowers carries some of the most popular flowers, including peonies, anemones and tulips. They also offer seasonal flowers, such as ranunculus, which are perfect for weddings. Customers looking for something that lasts longer can also find live plants like lilies and orchids at their store.
Building roots and growing forward
As Bakersfield locals, Amanda and Diana love the support they receive from the Bakersfield community. They even have a wall of pictures featuring their loyal customers, especially those who continued to support them during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This support goes both ways; they intentionally give back to the community and support other local businesses. When choosing which products to sell, they are adamant about exclusively picking items from small, local California businesses.
“Supporting small businesses is really important because they are the ones who are helping shape culture,” Amanda says. “Small businesses pay attention to what the community needs.”
Moving forward, Diana and Amanda envision the future of House of Flowers as bigger and better. They want to ensure they are leaning into their passions and things they enjoy, including hosting more workshops and events at their store.

Bakersfield Award: Business Person of the Year
In 2023, I was named Bakersfield Business Person of the Year, an accolade that both humbled me and filled me with immense pride. Even though I could not be at the ceremony due to my work, I am grateful for my community's unwavering support and tireless dedication as I reflect on the journey that led me to that moment.
For the past six years, my life has been consumed by a singular mission: to elevate my radio stations, Rewind 98.1 & Outlaw 103.7, to become household names in Bakersfield. I understood from the outset that achieving this goal would require more than just broadcasting great music. It demanded an active presence within the community, a commitment to connecting with individuals on a personal level, and a relentless drive to make a positive impact.
From day one, I immersed myself in Bakersfield's heartbeat, seizing every opportunity to engage with its residents and participate in local events. Whether sponsoring community gatherings, hosting charity drives, or simply lending a listening ear to those in need, I strived to embody the essence of a responsible and caring local business owner.
Yet, this journey was not without its challenges. Balancing the demands of entrepreneurship with the responsibilities of fatherhood, marriage, and familial obligations tested my resolve daily. Due to my busy schedule, which involves DJing at weekend weddings and managing radio operations throughout the week, I had little time to rest. However, I found comfort in knowing that every sacrifice I made was evidence of my commitment to achieving my dreams.
Last year, as the accolades were being bestowed upon me at the awards banquet, I found myself absent, fulfilling a prior commitment to DJ a wedding in SLO. It was a reminder that the life of a business owner knows no bounds, that our dedication transcends the confines of traditional working hours and that our responsibilities extend far beyond the boardroom.
Winning the title of Business Person of the Year was undoubtedly a highlight of my career.
Still, it was also a reminder of the countless other entrepreneurs who toil tirelessly in pursuit of their dreams. They are the unsung heroes of our communities, the driving force behind local economies and the embodiment of resilience in the face of adversity.
Rewind 98.1 and Outlaw 103.7 are more than just radio stations; they are conduits for community empowerment, platforms for spreading messages of hope and unity and symbols of the enduring spirit of Bakersfield. As I continue to evolve as a radio station owner, I remain committed to fostering meaningful connections, driving positive change and inspiring others to pursue their passions with determination.
Ultimately, being named Businessperson of the Year is not just a personal achievement but a celebration of the collective efforts of every individual who has supported me along the way. Together, we are rewriting the narrative of what it means to be a local business owner, championing the ethos of "be local, buy local," and paving the way for a brighter future for Bakersfield and beyond. #localradio
