Message from the CEO As we enter the last full month of Summer, we’re excited about what the remainder of the year holds for the Chamber and our community. Starting with our first event, our California Issues Forum, our 2022 Chairman Rick Jhaj has urged a focus on our community and coming together around the issues and priorities that unite us. Carrying on that theme, Mayor Karen Goh and City Manager Christian Clegg charted a positive vision at the 2022 State of the City. You can read more about the event on the next page. The Mayor focused on gratitude, for our citizens, businesses and officials, and the work they do every day to build something better. Yes, our City has challenges and faces threats, but there is great opportunity and great things happening in Bakersfield. From partnerships and collaborations, to City investments and public works projects, to new businesses, Bakersfield is moving forward. That positive energy resonated with our audience at the State of the City. Speaking of moving, last month we said goodbye to longtime Chamber staff member Jean Scheiber. Jean’s moved on to work for a local accounting company, but she will always be a part of the Chamber family. We also welcomed a new member of the team, Kami Gonzalez, who started in July as our new Director of Administration and Operations. Read more about Kami to the right. We’re grateful to have her join our team and improve our internal processes and operations. As we look forward to the start of the school year, and hopefully lower temps in the next few weeks, I’d encourage you all to slow down, appreciate your blessings and your community. August will be a slower month for us, after two large signature events in June and July; but there will be much to celebrate including brand-new business openings, and much to plan for including the return of networking events this fall and the state Economic Summit in late October. We’re looking forward to it. As I reflect on the Mayor’s message of gratitude, I’m thankful for this community. I mean that broadly in terms of our region, but specifically our community of Chamber members. Thank you for the work you put in to make your businesses and our city better, and thank you for the opportunity to serve you. - Nick Ortiz President/CEO Greater Bakersfield Chamber

Meet Our Newest Chamber Team Member

Kami Gonzalez

Director of Administration & Operations Kami joins us with more than a decade of operations and administrative leadership experience in the medical industry. Over the last 17 years, she has improved operating systems and learned all there is to know about upgrading internal work departments. Kami has helped hospitals support their patient populations by improving their internal operations systems and departments. Her expertise in the implementation of training, mentoring, finance, revenue cycle management and more, will be a huge asset to ongoing Chamber programs. Prior to joining the Chamber, Kami worked in Respiratory Care for senior communities providing therapy and service with durable medical equipment. This was especially essential during the pandemic as senior patients were the most vulnerable to COVID-19. She worked with the surrounding counties to secure non-invasive ventilators and oxygen concentrators for Marian Regional Medical Center, French Hospital Medical Center and Mariposa County Health Department at the height of COVID-19 in support of their patient population. She looks forward to helping local businesses and putting her wealth of knowledge to use in a new dynamic way. She is passionate about helping and supporting people. Kami is deeply involved with her community and partners with Houchin Community Blood Bank to coordinate blood drives, and sponsored local 5K and 10K runs for healthcare causes and various organizations in Bakersfield. Help us welcome Kami - feel free to reach out to her at

State of theCity City, Chamber share goals, achievements at State of the City lunch Sharing Bakersfield’s accomplishments so far in 2022 and focusing on the promise for its future, the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce hosted Wednesday the first in-person State of the City luncheon in three years at the Bakersfield Marriott at the Convention Center. Advances in the effort to eradicate homelessness, increase educational opportunities and improve infrastructure were the primary topics for the mayor, city manager and business leaders who touted local progress to the crowd, as well as recent achievements.

Mayor Karen Goh spoke about the various partnerships the city has created to take a holistic approach to the challenges presented by the homelessness crisis, a statewide problem but one that’s hit communities in Kern County especially hard. “For the first time in recent memory, the number of individuals inside a shelter outnumbered those on the streets,” Goh said, noting the city had doubled its number of shelter beds in the last year and had plans to add about 300 new spots in the near future. “That is really important. That's progress.” (continued on page 6)

METRO | PAGE 5

She noted the shelter was being offered in conjunction with The Open Door Network, Flood Ministries and a host of other partners that are looking at not only the housing aspect, but the other challenges those residents often face, including adequate mental health resources and support for addiction recovery. City Manager Christian Clegg also recapped progress the city is making toward its infrastructure goals, as well as highlights from the city’s budget. The city’s spending plan grew from $683 million to $735 million year over year, thanks in no small part to voters approving Measure N, the 1-cent sales tax for public safety and vital services, which adds about $58 million annually to city coffers. The money has allowed the city to repave more than 140 miles, he noted, in addition to hiring 220 officers in the last three years, a gain of 83 patrol positions since 2018, when the measure was first passed. Goh also announced the arrival of a company expected to make a significant contribution to the region’s role as a leader for the state and the nation in new energy technologies. SineWatts, which has a market capitalization of approximately $30 million to $40 million, finished moving its headquarters from Charlotte, N.C., to California Avenue earlier this month, according to Les Mood, a Cal State Bakersfield alum who’s also the public affairs officer for the energy company.

Their patented technology, which was first developed in Palo Alto in 2011, is developing ways for objects that traditionally consume energy to be able to put energy back into “the grid.” “What we’re envisioning is a world that would be essentially powered by buildings and electric vehicles,” said Shiba Bhowmik, president and CEO of SineWatts. “So instead of having our energy sources residing hundreds of miles away, we would like to have our energy sources where we consume our energy.” Mood and Bhowmik said the company is working with CSUB to figure out how the university’s research labs can work with the company on its new “bidrectional” energy tech, with a demonstration likely about 18 months out. Goh noted the project would be one of many promising collaborations in Bakersfield’s future. “In the months ahead, the city, our partners, we're going to collaborate to integrate the technology and innovation strategies within the CSUB Energy Innovation Center,” Goh said during her 45-minute address to city officials and members of the business community. “We're going to continue to work together to bring more startups like SineWatts to ask them to contribute to research and development. CSUB will lead the region forward as a solution-based incubator and creator of good jobs.” Source: The Bakersfield Californian Original Publication Date: July 20, 2022 Author: Perry Smith, psmith@bakersfield.com

Government Day Recap Leadership Bakersfield Government Day provided class members with an inside look at how local and state governments operate, how election campaigns are waged and what life is really like for an elected official. Class members started the day with an introduction to the regional economic development initiative, B3K-Prosperity and how this collaboration is bringing together government, businesses, educators, the community and labor to improve Kern’s economy. Local high school teacher, columnist and author Jeremy Adams provided the class with an understanding of the basics of government and how it impacts our daily lives. Next, the class heard from elected and appointed officials about what a career in public service is really like. The class also heard from Assemblyman Vince Fong, Councilman Andrae Gonzalez, County Administrative Officer Ryan Alsop and County Public Health Director Brynn Carrigan. A panel featuring two local political party representatives, Matthew Martin and Christian Romo provided the class with their perspectives on politics and winning elections. Finally, class members participated in a mock hearing where they learned what it was like to both lead and be “grilled” during a public hearing. Thank you to day chair Mia Cifuentes with the Berry Corporation and to day sponsor the Tejon Indian Tribe.
