Message from the CEO New Year, New Opportunities As 2023 comes to a close, and I reflect on all that has happened this past year, I feel energized for an exciting year ahead! I am inspired by everything the Chamber was able to accomplish this year, which would not be possible without the incredible work of the Chamber’s core team, volunteers, supporters, members and community partners. Together, we achieved amazing success! Here are a few highlights the Chamber is happy to celebrate: •

Receiving the inaugural California Chamber of Commerce HR Champion Award for our work in helping our members navigate the complex landscape of labor and employment laws to keep their business in compliance through our Labor Law & HR Series.

Visiting with our local legislators and advocating for Kern County businesses on our legislative trip to attend the CalChamber's Capitol Summit in Sacramento.

Planning and executing an elevated event for the largest annual Beautiful Bakersfield Awards with 800+ attendees to celebrate all the good that individuals, businesses and organizations are doing for our City.

Providing more impactful networking opportunities with the increase in attendance at monthly Ambassador Committee meetings, ribbon cuttings and mixers.

METRO | PAGE 4

Showcasing numerous local, small businesses with our Shop Local, Shop Now campaign that has received great support from the Kern Women’s Business Center and the City of Bakersfield.

With 2024 around the corner, the Chamber is gearing up for a busy year filled with new opportunities for members and the community. As my role as Interim President/CEO comes to an end, it has been a tremendous honor to serve our members and work hand-in-hand with local leaders. I wish the business community a successful and prosperous 2024! Cheers!

2023 Beautiful Bakersfield Award Recipient – Nonprofit of the Year “And the 2023 Beautiful Bakersfield Nonprofit of the Year award goes to… The Mission at Kern County.” The Mission is honored and humbled to be chosen in this category amongst nine other worthy nonprofits doing benevolent work in Kern County. For more than 70 years, The Mission at Kern County has been dedicated to providing care and support to the most vulnerable members of our community. Each day, we open our doors to individuals who are affected by homelessness and addictions. While many of them initially seek a warm meal, clothing or shelter, what they find is an opportunity to transform their lives. Our approach involves personalized case management, where we work closely with each person to address the root causes of their destructive behaviors. In addition to these essential services, The Mission also provides faith-based, one-year residential addiction recovery programs for both unaccompanied men and women. However, there was a gap for services to help mothers with young children, struggling with addictions. So, in 2018, we expanded our programs to include recovery support and transitional housing for these precious families. This year, through collaboration with the City of Bakersfield, The Mission completely refurbished its existing Day Center, adding office space and a reception area. This additional space will allow new and current partnering agencies that help us provide even more wrap-around services to our guests. It is our goal to continuously assess the state of

homelessness and addictions and pivot to meet the needs of the men and women who walk through our gates desiring a new way of life. At The Mission at Kern County, we are committed to making a positive impact on the lives of those who are most in need. Through our comprehensive services and dedicated staff, we strive to empower individuals to overcome their challenges and create a brighter future for themselves and their families. The Mission is grateful to the Greater Bakersfield Chamber and our community, for being recognized as a nonprofit that is and will continue to strive to make our community a better place to live! Carlos Baldovinos Executive Director, The Mission at Kern County

Elevating Local Beauty for a Stronger Community

Sip and Style: Crafting Local Elegance and Community Resilience Through Every Pour and Style

Embrace a new era of vibrant and satisfying salon visits! Bakersfield’s very own blow dry bar salon, Sip and Style has revolutionized the local hairstyling experience. With 28 years in the hair industry, Owner Shelly Guess recognized the nationwide trend of blow dry bars and decided to introduce one to her beloved hometown of Bakersfield. Sip and Style pampers their clients with luxurious products such as Oribe, Kèrastase, Bio Ionic and Gama Professional, exclusive to a few salons in Kern County. From blowouts, bro-outs, hair styling, scalp massages, makeup artistry and beyond, this blowdry and makeup bar curates custom services suitable for all, regardless of gender or age. Each service includes a beverage (alcoholic or nonalcoholic), ensuring a relaxing experience while being pampered. Sip and Style celebrates its second anniversary this month and Guess reflected on how her journey started. “I self-funded my business, I laid the floors and painted the walls,” said Guess. “I put my blood, sweat, tears and a lot of fear into it.” Since its grand opening, Sip and Style has shown consistent growth in profitability, earned a nomination for the Beautiful Bakersfield Small Business of the Year Award and significantly METRO | PAGE 8

contributed to the local community. However, navigating the realm of small business ownership has its share of difficulties. “Being a California-based small business owner is already hard with the extra challenges and hoops you have to jump through but having employees is the hardest part,” she said. Juggling responsibilities that include overseeing Sip and Style, managing the employees, booth rentals and attending to her clientele, Guess acknowledges the challenge of balancing it all. On top of managing her business, Guess is also actively engaged in nurturing the next wave of hairstylists, serving on the current board for Kern High School District Regional Occupational Center (ROC). A former ROC student herself, she takes pride in mentoring, guiding and inspiring students through the difficulties of the industry. “The success rate is very low so trying to help them, especially at that young age of 17 and 18, to know how to succeed is something really passionate to me,” she said. Guess also instituted an apprenticeship program at her salon, designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the industry. Apprentices delve into blowouts, customer service skills and the art of generating income. “They start making money

and that’s the thing, making money allows them to supplement their next step in whatever service it might be,” elaborated Guess.

She regularly organizes a Sip and Shop event aimed to elevate the presence of her products and current tenants Rolling Pistols.

She takes immense pride in Sip and Style, considering it a gateway for entry-level professionals entering the industry, “Being able to teach the new generation the importance of customer service is important because no one has to come to my business, they choose to come,” said Guess.

“I like to try to help smaller vendors by holding collaborative events and providing them with a space to showcase and sell their products,” said Guess.

She noted that providing exceptional customer service and human-focused store policies are what help her business thrive. “I provide more old school mom and pop customer service… things happen in life and to be more understanding is what I like to do,” said Guess. As a member of the Greater Bakersfield Chamber, Guess has recognized the significance of supporting local businesses. She highlighted the unwavering dedication of local community business owners, emphasizing their promptness in showing support, making donations and contributing to the community. She leverages her salon as more than just a service hub; Guess offers booth rentals to support emerging businesses and hairstylists seeking more visibility.

Sip and Style is impacting lives beyond hair and makeup. Its influence extends to the community acting as a driving force for positive change. “You’ve got to keep money here so that our community keeps growing… do what you can to get your things local because it keeps flowing through everyone here,” stated Guess. The Greater Bakersfield Chamber Launches the 2023 Shop Local, Shop Now Campaign The Greater Bakersfield Chamber, announced the launch of its “Shop Local, Shop Now” (SLSN) holiday campaign at the Brimhall Square Shopping Center. With the support of the City of Bakersfield and the Kern Women’s Business Center, the campaign encourages Bakersfield residents to shop local, shop early and actively support local businesses throughout the holiday season and beyond. As the trend of early holiday shopping continues to grow, Hillary Haenes, the Chamber's Interim President and CEO, stressed the importance of supporting local, "It’s not just about beating the holiday rush; it's about spreading out budgets and lending vital support to our local businesses," said Haenes. Shopping locally not only strengthens the local economy but also enables residents to choose products with a lower carbon footprint, minimal packaging waste and eco-friendly options. Chamber members offer diverse gifts, emphasizing personal customer experiences through real human interaction. In individual speeches, Bakersfield Mayor Karen Goh and Kern Women’s Business Center Program Director, Norma Dunn stated how honored and thrilled they are to support this impactful campaign. “Your choice to shop locally goes beyond a single transaction,” said Goh. “It's a powerful investment in realizing small business dreams and the economic prosperity of our community as a whole.” The shoplocalshopnow.com website includes an interactive map that lists all Chamber members in retail, restaurant and hospitality categories. The Chamber will also be promoting Shop Local, Shop Now on its digital and social media platforms through the month of December. For those enthusiastic about actively participating in the campaign, both shoppers and business owners are invited to use the hashtags #ShopLocalShopNow and #BakoChamber on their social media channels to share their local shopping experiences and to highlight businesses. Chamber members are specifically encouraged to visit shoplocalshopnow.com/resources/ to access and download the Shop Local, Shop Now social media kit. This kit serves as a fantastic tool to foster collaboration and sharing within the local business community.

2023 Leadership Bakersfield Team Projects

Team 1 – Lori Brock Children’s Museum Gift Shop Project The project stemmed from careful consideration of Leadership Bakersfield initiatives. Criteria included benefiting an overlooked entity, addressing systemic issues and aligning with the team’s capabilities. The renovated gift shop now generates revenue for the museum.

Team 3 – Grace Street Garden Community Hub Project Team 3 helped Apple Core Project (@ applecoreproject) rehabilitate an old structure at its Grace Street Garden to serve as a multi-use Community Hub for food storage and distribution, educational events and resource fairs. Thanks to support from community partners like Chevron, the newly revitalized Community Hub will increase the organization’s capacity to fight food insecurity in East Bakersfield and beyond.

Team 2 – Garden Pathways Reimagine Project Teaming up with Garden Pathways Downtown Education Center, Team 2 transformed an outdated 3,000-square-foot. multipurpose room. This room continually serves students, hosts diverse events and serves as a hub for the community. The space was revamped with fresh paint and stunning murals, showcasing the natural allure of Kern County landscapes. Thanks to generous donors, the room now radiates vibrancy, providing a revitalized hub for education and communal gatherings.

Team 4 – Lighting Up BPAL Project Team 4 collaborated with the Bakersfield Police Activities League (BPAL), to achieve impactful milestones for the community it serves. The team installed new lights in the boxing gym to create an illuminating environment. Interactive boards were created to inspire career paths and higher education. Flame & Fire Brazilian Steak House - Churrasco has three centuries of tradition in the vast plains of the southernmost region of Brazil. Gauchos would prepare a feast for their family and friends by slow roasting various cuts of meat from each of their herd over an open flame pit. They offered to each family and friend, the best of the Gaucho’s herd, where they carved the meats at each table in a show of skill and gift giving. Flame & Fire Brazilian Steakhouse brings this authentic Churrascaria to our California locations in Roseville, Folsom and Bakersfield. Established in Roseville in 2014, we are proud to share with you the culture of great food and warm hospitality.
