ebruary is here, the groundhog has decreed an early spring, and the year is off to delightful, but at times dizzying, start. Our year kicked off with our Installation & Awards Luncheon in mid January, we had 350 attendees and great sponsor support. Thank you to all who attended and sponsored, a full recap is on pages 8-9. Nick Ortiz In addition to our own events and programs, the Chamber team has been out in the community supporting important initiatives and working with our partners. The Chamber sponsored the annual IREM Forecast Breakfast, an always informative forum on local real estate market trends, and the Bakersfield Association of REALTORS® annual installation luncheon. The REALTORS are one of our strongest advocacy partners, and works closely with us on issues and our efforts to elect business friendly candidates. We also attended the State of the County address, organized by our partners at KEDC, and the

always lively Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Installation Gala. Kern County has a vibrant business community and we were excited to support our partners in their annual celebrations! Beyond just attending events, your Chamber team has been working hard on community initiatives and issues. Our team was up early in late January to volunteer for the annual point -in-time count, also known as the homeless census. It was so rewarding to see the work of the Kern County Homeless Collaborative, and participate in this very important effort to better understand the need in our community, and help bring Federal and State resources to Kern County. On the advocacy front, we’ve impacted the City’s implementation of Measure N - the City of Bakersfield’s sales tax. Our amazing partners at Kern Tax, the Bakersfield Association of Realtors, Bakersfield police officers and Bakersfield firefighters, worked with us to nominate appointees for the Measure N Citizens Oversight Committee. We successfully lobbied for the appointment of seven of our nominees to the nine member council. We’re always here working for you, and with our partners, for the betterment of Bakersfield!

he Chamber hosted its 2019 Annual Board Installation and Awards Luncheon on Jan. 16. More than 300 people attended this high caliber event at Seven Oaks Country Club where attendees were able to socialize with business community leaders . The event served as the installation of the Chamber’s 2019 Board of Directors, including Darlene Mohlke, of Castle & Cooke California, Inc., as the Chairwoman of the Board. Thank you to our 2018 Chairwoman of the Board, Carla Musser, Retired, for your service and support. The volunteers and community partners who helped make the Chamber’s signature events and programs successful were also honored. Josie Martin, of DoubleTree by Hilton, was named as Volunteer of the Year. hether it’s fielding questions at a press conference or being interviewed by the media, professionals need to know how to work with media outlets. LB participants spent Jan. 18 interacting with local journalists and PR experts to hone their media skills. The session began at KGET-TV 17 where participants toured the studio and sat in on a morning news meeting. In addition, there was a panel discussion on the importance of social media and best practices for using social media. The class also had the unique opportunity of a behind the scenes tour of the Bakersfield Californian. The media training wrapped up with a mock press conference, where participants learned how to handle situations that could place their companies in the spotlight. Each participant answered questions from experts with the Kern Press Club about their individual scenario. LB kicked off its 2019 program on Jan. 9, introducing 34 high school students to what qualities define a leader. Zane Smith, Executive Director of The Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County, started the day’s program with ice breaker activities. Students learned about their love language and how to work together. The county’s chief administrative officer, Ryan Alsop, and Mayor Karen Goh discussed what it takes to make government entities run efficiently and avenues to get involved in at the local government level. Robin Paggi, of WorklogicHR, presented the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator in order for the class members to understand their personality tendencies. Based on their profiles, students completed a series of exercises. The class session wrapped up with an ethics panel, moderated by Dr. Chris Meyers, a retired CSUB professor and Dr. Steven Gamboa, Associate Professor of Philosophy. The topic centered around the future of Artificial Intelligence and students discussed the ethical concerns with this new technology. • The Second Annual Kern County

Formed in 1973 GET serves the Bakersfield Metropolitan area, which is 160 square miles. GET has a fleet of 90 compressed natural gas buses equipped with wheelchair lifts and bike racks. GET services 16 routes, which operate 7 days a week and transport more than 6 million passengers each year with its fixed route buses. In addition, GET operates 21 compressed natural gas GET-A-Lift buses.
