MESSAGE FROM THE
A
s 2022 gets started, we’re working hard to support our member businesses by providing programs, tools and promotion to be successful. First, in late January, along with our partners at Moneywise Wealth Management, we launched the Greater Bakersfield Chamber Multiple Employer Plan 401(k) or MEP for short. The MEP is an alternative to the state’s mandatory retirement Nick Ortiz program, CalSavers. In June of this year, all employers with more than five employees must provide retirement services or they will be automatically enrolled in CalSavers. The Chamber MEP offers employers a local, private sector solution that allows businesses to customize plans without the cost or administrative burden of setting up an independent plan. Look for more information on the MEP at www.mep.bakochamber.com. Also this month, we’ve updated and re-launched our Shop Local, Shop Now campaign for Valentine’s Day. We launched this program after Thanksgiving last year, to encourage our community to support local businesses when holiday shopping. After getting great media attention and feedback, we’ve decided to activate this campaign for major holiday gift buying seasons like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Check out our customized website that shows where you can locate amazing gifts from local retailers. This is just one way that we’re supporting our restaurants, retailers, health and beauty businesses and many others!

Always a key focus for us are our labor law and compliance programs. Earlier this month, we hosted our Labor Law & HR Forum with an update on all of the changes in employment laws and regulations. Next month, we’ll hold a training on sexual harassment and violence prevention. This will be an interactive session with Partner and Employment Law Attorney Jerry Pearson of Young Wooldridge LLP, that meets California’s training requirements and you will learn valuable tools to reduce your liability. This session also includes a certificate upon completion. Remember now is the time to refresh your labor law postings in your offices and locations. Call 661-327-4421 or email the Chamber at info@bakochamber.com to get your 2022 Labor Law Posters, which have the key information that employers are required to post. We carry the posters in English and Spanish and the posters are $40 each plus tax. Finally, as you know, we had to postpone our annual luncheon given the latest COVID surge, but we are excited to be moving forward with our luncheon on March 9 at Seven Oaks Country Club. We’ll thank our outgoing Chairman Derek Jeffery with KGET-TV 17 and induct our 2022 Chair Rick Jhaj with Countryside Corporation. Both are impressive business and community leaders, and the Chamber is lucky to have volunteer leaders like them to guide our organization and serve local businesses. – Nick Ortiz President/CEO Greater Bakersfield Chamber

Congratulations to the 2021 Corporation of the Year!
A
while back, I got a job working at Urner’s. Through the process of applying and onboarding, I kept hearing the same thing: “You’re going to love working there.” And now that I’ve been here for a bit, it’s become more and
more true each day. I do love working here, but it wasn’t for the reasons I expected. I love working here because the team at Urner’s cares for the community and our city. So, after winning Corporation of the Year at the Beautiful Bakersfield Awards, everyone here couldn’t be more thrilled! Some perspective: The drive to serve the community starts at the top with our President & CEO Steve Illingworth. By direction of the “Good Book,” he doesn’t let his right hand know what his left hand is doing. He leads us to donate time, resources and financial contributions without the need for public acknowledgment. Case in point – to submit this award package, I even had to pry the application information out of him! I’m still not sure he told me everything… but perhaps it was designed that way. Yet, it was that kind of reluctance that shows why many love working here. There’s good to be done in our community and we’ve been blessed to do it! For example: • There was a need for funding for local nonprofits that got hit hard by the pandemic and Urner’s answered the call. • The employees of Urner’s got together and donated hundreds of pounds of food to the Bakersfield Homeless Center during the holidays. • There was a need for beds at a local mission and Urner’s stepped up and stepped in. • There was a need for appliances at the homes of at-risk youths, and Urner’s donated. 2022 is ramping up and (hopefully) some of our lives will be getting back to a level of normalcy. In the meantime, we will still be here plugging away at what needs to be done in our stores and our city. The work doesn’t stop because there are always ways to bless others. Our hope is that many can join us!
METRO | PAGE 6
Additionally, there are more big things on our horizon worth celebrating! We can’t tell you what it is yet, but we promise Bakersfield is going to love what we are planning. In the meantime, all of us at Urner’s want to leave you with this note of encouragement: You are inspiring! After everything we all have been through, it just goes to show what a great city we live in because of the people and companies like you. We are all in this together! Don’t forget that. Lastly, this award does not exist without the care, attention and hard work of our employees. Our team is our pride and joy. They showed up when it was tough and they gave back without knowing what was next. This award is dedicated to them! So, all of us at Urner’s thank you for this wonderful opportunity to celebrate achievements and generosity. More importantly, thank you for giving us the opportunity to be charitable. Each dollar that is spent in our stores, a portion gets put right back into the community because, well, it was designed that way. – Aaryck Enriquez, Marketing Director of Urner's

SHOP LOCAL, SHOP NOW CAMPAIGN RELAUNCHES FOR VALENTINE’S DAY
Small and local businesses are the backbone of our community.
The Greater Bakersfield Chamber relaunched their Shop Local, Shop Now campaign to promote local business and encourage the community to shop local this Valentine’s Day. This consumer campaign was initially activated during the winter holidays and received praise from the business community due to its efforts to get individuals to shop local. “This initiative helps promote our region’s economic vitality and the success of our member’s businesses, which include dozens of retail stores, restaurants and other hospitality companies,” said Nick Ortiz, Chamber President and CEO. “Shopping local for your Valentine’s Day gifts is a great way to support local retailers who invest a lot of time and energy to curate unique and personalized products.” A 2021 report from Business Insider found that the average person spent $165 on Valentine’s Day gifts - making it an excellent time for the Chamber to encourage the community to purchase from small businesses. To assist in this effort, the Chamber is asking residents to visit their microsite: shoplocalshopnow.com, that serves as a hub for the Shop Local, Shop Now campaign and functions as a directory for people to find local one-of-a-kind gifts. “Small and local businesses are the backbone of our community,” said BottleShock owner and Chamber member Shelby Gerber. “We do our best to not only invest in our team and networks, but we also invest in
developing strong relationships with our customers. Because we get to know our customers so well we are able to adjust our wine and food inventory to meet the unique tastes of Bakersfield.” The website includes an interactive map that lists all Chamber members in retail, restaurant and hospitality categories. As an additional perk for all Bakersfield residents - when people use the hashtags #ShopLocalShopNow and #BakoChamber - they will also have the opportunity to be featured in the Chamber Instagram feed. “We hope that through this campaign we can continue to support the success of our member small businesses,” said Ortiz. “When you purchase locally, you avoid shipping delays, help create jobs for your friends and neighbors, contribute to improved public infrastructure and help fuel your local economy.” METRO | PAGE 13
