OF THE BOARD Greetings and Happy New Year! I am very excited to be the Greater Bakersfield Chamber’s 2020 Chairman of the Board. The Chamber serves as the conduit for community, collaboration and commerce. 2020 is the Chamber’s Centennial year, which is really something to celebrate for our local business community – it is an amazing achievement to have Derek Jeffery that type of longevity and to maintain an organization’s influence over that time. The Chamber’s 100th Anniversary is possible only though the support of our members and the leadership of our volunteers. As I look back on the Chamber’s history, and reflect on those who have come before me, I am honored to join the ranks of the Board Chairs who have guided the Chamber. Notable local business leaders with last names like Burke, Barbich, Bynum, Clayton, Dezember, Martin, Rojas and Stinson. I’m also thrilled to be in the same club as one of my predecessors at KGET, Ray Watson, Sr. KGET and the Chamber have a shared commitment to this community. Both organizations have an important role in civic life, KGET serves as a broadcast (and now
digital) town square, and the Chamber is instrumental in harnessing the power of the local business community to make positive change. At KGET we are very proud of our history supporting local nonprofits and causes. At the end of last year, we formally declared the parking lot at 22nd and L streets as Compassion Corner. At the location we have hosted at least one nonprofit fundraiser a month for more than 25 years. Those fundraisers aren’t just barbecues and boot filling – they are providing resources to the organizations that are improving the lives of our most vulnerable neighbors. I don’t know of anywhere else BUT Bakersfield where that type of generosity isn’t just celebrated, it’s expected. As I embark on this new role, I want to focus on celebrating the achievements of our member businesses, continuing the unapparelled excellence in advocacy and continuing the work of improving Bakersfield’s external image and economy. I hope that you will continue supporting the Chamber and join us in Building Something Better.

MESSAGE FROM THE
As we enter our centennial year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the many community leaders who have had a role in the century-long success of the Greater Bakersfield Chamber. I have a deep respect and gratitude for our past Board Chairs, our founding members, former staff members, and especially my predecessors as the Chamber’s chief executive. Nick Ortiz As you may have noticed, we have a new logo, a new look, and a new tagline. “Building Something Better” isn’t a statement about where we want to go, it accurately reflects what the Chamber has always been to local businesses and the community of Bakersfield. Building something better illustrates how business leaders decided in 1920 to form a local business organization and how that organization shaped how the city rebuilt after the devastating 1952 earthquake, marketed “America’s Newest City”, became an All American City, looked forward to Vision 2020, and recently declared that our area is both Boundless and Better. The strength of the Chamber doesn’t come from me, or anyone that has sat in my chair – it comes from the
continued support of the business community. Thank you for 100 years of your trust and support, thank you for being champions of private enterprise, and thank you for caring so much about this community that you’ve given your time and resources to ensure its betterment.

LEADERSHIP BAKERSFIELD “In December, the Leadership Bakersfield Class of 2020 had the pleasure of visiting several of the organizations that make up the diverse and historic arts and culture community of Bakersfield. The class began their day at the Bakersfield Museum of Art where curator Rachel Mangus encouraged everyone to share the role that art plays in their lives before they embarked on a tour of one of the museum’s exhibits. Then, retired teacher Art Sherwyn gave the class a lesson about art and leadership and put them to the test with an activity about how art reflects life. The class then ventured through downtown on a tour led by David Gordon, stopping at several historic sites. Gordon reflected on the architecture of the area and the subtle, yet intentional, artistic components of downtown’s buildings. Next, the cast of Ovation Theater’s Christmas show gave the class a sneak peak of their current musical production. After Ovation Theater, the class got a guided tour of the Portrait
of a Warrior Gallery by retired Sgt. Maj. Jason Geis and Lili Marsh. For lunch, the class had a traditional Basque family-style meal at Sandrini’s and enjoyed a presentation on Kern County’s rich history and culture from Robin Paggi. Finally, the class ended their day with a trip to the Empty Space Theater where they saw scenes from their upcoming show, "It’s a Wonderful Life," a performance from a Carmen Diaz’s mariachi group, and a performance by the Kern County Boys and Girls Club students. The Leadership Bakersfield class and Advisory Council would like to thank the Arts and Culture Day sponsors, the Bakersfield Museum of Art and the Boys and Girls Club, as well as all of the organizations and businesses that volunteered their time and leadership insights for Arts and Culture Day.” - Grace Martin, GEI Consultants, Inc.
