Bakersfield's Biggest Night Celebrating Significant Achievements in Bakersfield The Beautiful Bakersfield Awards is the biggest night in Bakersfield’s civic life, recognizing individuals, businesses and organizations for accomplishments completed during the prior year to improve quality of life and help make Bakersfield better. Every year since 1990, the Chamber looks forward to highlighting the most positive and heartwarming stories from our fellow community members. On June 25, the Beautiful Bakersfield Awards, presented by Valley Strong Credit Union, recognized the efforts of 94 individuals, businesses and organizations that helped build a better Bakersfield in 2021. More than 750 community members attended the 32nd annual event hosted by the Greater Bakersfield Chamber at Mechanics Bank Theater & Convention Center. Here’s a recap highlighting the positive and uplifting stories of each award recipient.

Media Day Recap

J

ust as the modern media landscape evolves with each news cycle, the 2022 Media Day introduced a new challenge for class participants and refined a crisis communications exercise that has become a tradition of Leadership Bakersfield. This year, coordinators Jeremy Price of Alpha Media and Jennifer Self of California State University, Bakersfield identified two areas for exploration that all communicators navigate regularly: Message development and delivery during a crisis and working with the media to promote an organization’s good news. KGET-TV 17 hosted the group for most of the day, which began with a tour of the new, state-of-the-art studio and a Q&A with Vice President and General Manager Derek Jeffery. From there, the class had the rare opportunity to observe the daily news meeting as reporters, assignment editors and anchors identified the topics and events to be covered that day. Following the news meeting, CSU Bakersfield lecturer and longtime media professional Jamie Butow shared valuable information on controlling social media messaging during a crisis. Butow emphasized knowing your audience, which dictates the platform and content of the message, and always being mindful to strike the right tone. Michelle Corson, public relations officer for Kern County Public Health Services Department, led a riveting presentation on crisis communications during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her advice to the class: Always tell the truth. The public will forgive a mistake, but never dishonesty. With Corson’s guidance fresh in their minds, class members were divided into several groups and presented with a crisis scenario. They were given

30 minutes to write a message and then took turns delivering that message, press-conference style, before a panel of journalists: Lois Henry of SJV Water; Christine Peterson of The Bakersfield Californian; Jeff Lemucchi of KNZR Radio; and Robert Price of KGET-TV 17. All of the teams were poised and thoughtful despite the grilling and emerged from the exercise with a greater understanding of the importance of staying on message and being transparent.

From KGET, the class headed to the KNZR studios to experience a first-ever opportunity for Leadership Bakersfield: promoting their team projects live, on-air with host Terry Maxwell. The new twist underscored the importance of outreach in promoting your message. In Bakersfield, we are fortunate to have a media establishment that is hyperfocused on community news and information. The radio segments allowed participants to craft a message that would appeal to a wide audience, bring attention to a worthy organization or topic, and issue a call to action for listeners. Our teams did a beautiful job of making their message relatable to the audience and captured the essence of good radio: It’s just a conversation. Though most of the class members do not work in media relations or communications, they did a phenomenal job of thinking on their feet and staying focused and selfassured despite the pressure. They exemplified the first priority of effective communications: As a leader at your organization, you represent not just yourself, but your entire team. - Jennifer Self, California State University, Bakersfield
