Beautiful Bakersfield Awards Shatters Attendance Records, Nominations Open for 2024 Event

Thank you to everyone who helped us to celebrate the many achievements within our community at the 34th Annual Beautiful Bakersfield Awards, presented by Valley Strong Credit Union. I am thrilled to share that this year’s event was the most well-attended in our history, with 800 people in attendance.

I extend my deepest thanks to the Beautiful Bakersfield Committee, led by Roberta Nilsson; my incredible Chamber team; event sponsors and the many volunteers who poured their hearts and souls into making the evening possible. But above all, I want to express my gratitude to our nominees and their supporters. Year after year, we are humbled by stories of the dedication shown by individuals and organizations striving to create a brighter future for our beloved city.

Furthermore, I am delighted to announce that nominations are now open for the 2024 Beautiful Bakersfield Awards until February 2, 2024. Those who would like to nominate can visit beautiful.bakochamber.com to submit.

Also, we recently hosted a Labor Law & HR Update Forum in response to California’s proactive measures to expand employee rights. This event provided employers with the necessary legal updates to ensure full compliance. It is our commitment to keep our business community well-informed and equipped to navigate the evolving landscape of employment laws.

We are gearing up for the 2023 State of the City luncheon presented by Valley Strong Credit Union, happening Wednesday, July 19. This forum is one of the Chamber’s premier business events where we will hear from city officials about the progress on Bakersfield’s most pressing issues. Together, we’ll gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by our great city and learn that they cannot be overcome single-handedly. You can still purchase seats by emailing info@bakochamber. com or calling our office at 661-327-4421.

As we stride into the midpoint of the year, it is an opportune time to announce that we will be hosting mixers starting next month. More details to come!

Wishing you all a safe summer – stay cool!

Law Enforcement Day Leadership Bakersfield

The Bakersfield Police Dept. (BPD) hosted this year ’s Law Enforcement Day for the Leadership Bakersfield program on Friday, June 8. The class started the day with Lt. Ryan Kroeker and Capt. Bobby Woolard at the BPD Training Facility, enjoying a delicious breakfast provided by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools.

During their time at the training facility, the class received a brief tour of the BPD Training Academy’ s premises and learned about its utilization. They also had a Q&A session with BPD Capt. Jeremy Blakemore, District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer and local Criminal Defense Litigator Jared Thompson, discussing the challenges in law enforcement and the functioning of the criminal justice system.

Community engagement is integral to the BPD’s operations and they were grateful for the opportunity to meet and engage with the students in this year’s class. The Leadership Bakersfield class interacted with officers and BPD staff, exploring various topics related to law enforcement, the criminal justice system and visiting different facilities and venues.

Next, the class visited the Bakersfield Police Activities League (BPAL), touring the facility that offers officers opportunities to build connections with youth through diverse programs and events. Following the tour, the class engaged in reallife scenarios with BPD officers acting as they experienced what it's like to be an officer.

The class then witnessed demonstrations by various specialized units within the BPD, including the SWAT team, Bomb Squad, K9 team and Unmanned Ariel Vehicle team. They also participated in a Use of

Force simulator overseen by active BPD Training Staff. The day concluded at the Kern County Sheriff’s Office Headquarters, where the class learned about and obtained information regarding the Sheriff's Office Air Support Unit.

Special thanks are extended to the Bakersfield Police Officers Association for being a day sponsor and to Golden Empire Transit for providing transportation throughout the day.

Mission Community Services Corporation’s (MCSC)

Kern Women's Business Center (KWBC) provides essential support and resources to entrepreneurs and small business owners and is dedicated to empowering women, low-income individuals, minorities, veterans and nonprofit businesses. Led by Program Director Norma Dunn, KWBC hosts free public business workshops that offer valuable networking opportunities and enhance understanding of essential business topics.

“The Kern Women’s Business Center plays a vital role in our community by providing crucial support and resources to entrepreneurs, particularly women, who often face unique challenges in the business world,” said Dunn. “We believe in empowering individuals from diverse backgrounds, ensuring equal access to opportunities and helping them thrive in the competitive landscape.”

KWBC offers the “Explore, Design & Launch” program, a 12-session training course that equips participants with the necessary knowledge, tools and resources to start and grow their businesses.

The center also offers the Spanish equivalent course, “Sonando y Empezando,” to ensure accessibility for individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

“We believe in equipping entrepreneurs with practical skills and a tangible business plan, setting them up for success from the very beginning,” said Dunn. “Offering courses in multiple languages ensures accessibility for individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.”

During the challenging times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, KWBC proactively spread the word about available grants and worked closely with local accounting firms to ensure small businesses received the support they deserved.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to see the impact of our efforts, as we successfully assisted 168 small business owners and independent contractors with a $2,500 grant,” said Dunn. “These numbers, alongside the accomplishments of our partner organizations, truly reflect the commitment and collective strength of our community.”
