WINNER OF 2021 BEAUTIFUL BAKERSFIELD AWARDS

Small Business of the Year

A

s the owner and manager of Hacienda Guerrero Catering, being named Small Business of the Year is a tremendous honor, not only for me, but for my family and my staff as well. As a team, we were humbled to receive this recognition. We have had the pleasure of serving the wonderful Bakersfield community and its surrounding areas for the past 22 years. We work hard as a team to ensure that every event is a success, and our clients are happy with our services. Even during the pandemic, whether it was raising funds or providing meals as a team, we continued to serve our community, which has supported us throughout our years in business. We look forward to continuing that same support for years to come. More than 20 years ago, while I was working on my Business Management Degree at the University of Phoenix, one of my courses was “How to Create a Business Plan for a Small Business.” Upon graduating, I had an idea to create a family business. My dad had experience as a cook, working for Happy Jack’s Pie ‘N Burger when they first opened and then working in the kitchen at Dignity Health Bakersfield Memorial Hospital. I approached him, my mom and my stepdad about starting a catering business. As the sole proprietor, I took on the financial responsibility and expenses of purchasing the equipment, permits, business insurance and licenses needed to get the catering business off the ground. Some people told me it was a crazy idea and that it would not be successful because there was too much competition. The first few years were a struggle but thanks to my family’s encouragement and support, along with some hard work and sacrifice, here we are 22 years later serving the Bakersfield community for various events and fundraisers.

METRO | PAGE 4

Eventually, my two nieces helped with the catering business. As the years went by and the business continued to grow, we began to hire more staff. Even though my father passed away, my mom and stepdad eventually retired from the catering business, and my nieces went on to work full-time elsewhere, I kept the business going. Throughout the years, we had a number of high school students join the team, which for some was their first job. They have eventually gone off to college and a few have done some great things in our community. To this day, we still have high school and college students working for Hacienda Guerrero Catering. Along with gaining work experience, they also gain knowledge and do community service. I always tell them that each staff member is an important part of the team, and we can all learn from one another to have a successful team. As a team, we strive to provide a variety of services for the Bakersfield area and its surrounding communities. Since the beginning of the catering business, we have made numerous monetary donations, assisted with fundraising or volunteered our services whenever we can for various causes, such as the Jamison Children’s Center, Bakersfield Ronald McDonald House, Kern Autism Network, Inc., League of Dreams, VFW, Marine Corps League and Honor Flight, as well as assisting some of our local high schools with their fundraising events. Some of our upcoming projects and events that we are going to be involved in include working with OG’z Car Club of Bakersfield by sponsoring their annual Feeding the Health Care Heroes event by providing meals for our heroes and the annual Christmas Wish List for the Jamison Children’s Center. Hacienda Guerrero Catering will also be sponsoring OG’z Car Club’s First Annual Show & Shine Car Show, which will be highlighting Old Town Kern and supporting local businesses. This event is geared toward revitalizing Old Town Kern and uniting our local community. We will be making a monetary donation to the Kern County World War II Veterans Memorial and Portrait of a Warrior Gallery Kern County, as well as working with the Jim Burke Education Foundation and their Ford Dimension and Dream Builders programs and Latina Leaders of Kern County. Hacienda Guerrero Catering’s goals are to encourage and support our community. – Martín Guerrero, Owner of Hacienda Guerrero Catering

Law Day Recap

T

he world of law enforcement is one that encompasses so many facets and to be able to help educate the community on the function of law enforcement, as well as the challenges it faces, is so important. The Leadership Bakersfield class was able to experience a variety of topics as it relates to law enforcement and the criminal justice system and were able to visit some of the facilities associated with Bakersfield’s commitment to public safety. On Friday, April 8, the class began its day at the Bakersfield Police Department Training Facility located at 4646 California Ave. While at the training facility, the class got a tour of the newly created building where the Bakersfield Police Department Training Division is located, and where the basic police academy is held. The class was able to have a Q&A with Bakersfield Police Department Chief Greg Terry, District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer, and local Criminal Defense Litigator Jared Thompson about the challenges in law enforcement, as well as how the criminal justice system is designed to function. The class transitioned to the Bakersfield Police Activities League (BPAL) to tour the facility, which provides officers with the opportunity to build relationships and connections with youth and provides many afterschool resources. After the tour, the class was able to place themselves in the shoes of an officer while going through real-life scenarios with BPD officers as actors. The Leadership Bakersfield class was then able to observe demonstrations from many of the Bakersfield Police Departments’ specialized units, specifically the SWAT team, Bomb Squad, K9 team, Unmanned Ariel Vehicle team, A Life Interrupted program and actively participate in a simulator. The day wrapped up at the Kern County Sheriff's Office Headquarters where the class was able to see and obtain information about the Sheriff’s Office Air Support Unit. The Chamber would like to thank Leadership Bakersfield Advisory Day Chair Lt. Ryan Kroeker for hosting the day. Special thanks to program underwriter Chevron; day sponsor Bakersfield Police Officers Association; and to Golden Empire Transit District for providing the day’s transportation. – Lt. Ryan Kroeker, Bakersfield Police Departmen
