Event Season is in Full Swing!

Dear Members,

Happy Small Business Month! As we celebrate the importance of small businesses in our economy, let’s also take a moment to appreciate the most important women in our lives – our mothers. According to the National Retail Federation, Mother’s Day spending is projected to exceed $31.7 billion this year. As we shop for gifts, let’s remember to support our local businesses that contribute to the backbone of our economy.

Recently, we were proud to be a sponsor of Give Big Kern, a day of giving that demonstrated the potential of social media and collaboration. The program, run by the Kern Community Foundation, raised close to $1 million this year, and has raised more than $3 million since 2016, while also increasing the visibility and support for nonprofits in Kern County.

Spring continues to be a busy time – event season is in full swing! We wrapped filming for the Kern County Economic Summit, which is an annual partnership with Kern EDC and California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB). The program will be broadcast on KGET-TV 17 from 6-7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, and live-streamed on kget.com. This year’s topics include panel discussions on local health care and carbon capture storage.

Our annual Beautiful Bakersfield Awards, presented by Valley Strong Credit Union, is right around the corner! Invitations have been mailed, planning is underway and we look forward to hosting you on Saturday, June 17 at the Mechanics Bank Theater & Convention Center! To stay up-to-date on this year’s event, visit beautiful.bakochamber.com/.

Here are a of couple highlights from the many activities we’ve participated in over the past month:

Our entire staff attended this year’s Bakersfield Women’s Business Conference. The event featured a variety of workshops and keynote speaker Daymond John from ABC’s hit show “Shark Tank.” We were inspired by the messages of empowerment throughout the day as well as the overall theme, “Bringing Business Back.”

Lastly, we had the chance to attend CSUB’s second annual Carbon Management Technical Symposium, where experts gathered to discuss the opportunities, challenges and urgency for developing carbon capture, utilization and storage projects in Kern County to help the state meet its climate goals and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

On behalf of the Chamber, thank you for your continued support as we continue to advocate for policies and offer programming that benefits our members and community.

Cheers!

The Greater Bakersfield Chamber kicks off Small Business Month, promotes gifts for moms that encourage overall health and wellness while supporting local businesses

The Greater Bakersfield Chamber announced the relaunch of its Shop Local, Shop Now campaign for Mother’s Day 2023. According to the National Retail Federation, Mother’s Day spending is expected to reach a record high of $31.7 billion this year. Consumers plan to purchase gifts of all kinds at higher rates than ever.

“We know that our community searches for meaningful gifts that create opportunities to spend quality time with the mothers in their lives while keeping them healthy inside and out,” said Interim President and CEO Hillary Haenes. “The Chamber strongly encourages shoppers to support local, member businesses.”

As we approach Mother’s Day, the Chamber urges Bakersfield residents to shop local and support our community at businesses like Happy Whole You, a holistic wellness company, ā La Mode, a new minimally-invasive luxury medspa or even new restaurants like Mango Haus, that features healthy, locally-sourced Latin cuisine.

“If you’re looking for a memorable local gift this Mother's Day, our website is the best place to start your search,” said Haenes. “Our members include Bakersfied’s finest luxury spas, restaurants, fitness centers, boutiques and much more.”

Nonprofit of the Year: Community Action Partnership of Kern

In receiving the Beautiful Bakersfield Award last year, it has helped bring visibility to our agency on the impactful work of our staff and programs. It was an inspiring feeling to receive recognition from our peers and partners that directly support our efforts to reach the most vulnerable in our community, ranging from individuals experiencing homelessness to food insecurity.

Most recently, Community Action Partnership of Kern (CAPK), expanded its services at our low-barrier homeless shelter, the M Street Navigation Center, which was operational in May 2020. In June 2022, the agency expanded the M Street Navigation Center to include Safe Camping and Safe Parking options for individuals experiencing homelessness. The goal of the program is to build trust, increase community engagement, support local businesses by providing alternatives and provide a safe place for individuals who are shelter resistant. Additionally, it was designed to connect individuals to services to eventually transition to permanent housing or shelter environment.

Currently, our agency is in the midst of a capital expansion project of our Food Bank located in Southeast Bakersfield expanding the site by 200 percent to 60,000 square feet by Fall 2023. The expansion will help support program efficiency, streamline our service delivery model, store additional food and increase our distribution to food insecure residents in Kern County.

Through the 2021-25 Strategic Plan, the agency continues to progress with the six planned goals and objectives that serve as a road map to focus CAPK’s efforts over the next years toward achieving results that promote self-sufficiency among families and the development of thriving communities. Our goal is to address food insecurity by increasing access to healthy, affordable food to support the health of the communities we serve. The agency is in the process of conducting an assessment on food insecurity in Kern County.

This year-long project, which started in June 2022, will be used in conjunction with the Community Needs Assessment. The food insecurity study is focusing on the following key areas for the purpose of understanding how food supply, distribution, access and affordability impact the nutrition and health of Kern County residents.

Education Day Leadership Bakersfield

Leadership Bakersfield’s Education Day started at the Kern County Superintendent of School’s office where administrators Heather Richter, Cameron Guinn and Greg West discussed the Kern Education Pledge and the Kern Integrated Data System (KiDS). KiDS is an integral part of the Kern Education Pledge and ensures the sharing of student outcome data to assist all stakeholders in making informed decisions about what is best for students, teachers and schools.

The class then visited the C. W. Richardson Child Development Center. The center provides a variety of education and support services for children from birth to 5 years of age. Principal Angelina BeltranHarris kicked off the visit with a tour followed by a parade attended by parents and donors where each class dressed and made props that were Bakersfield themed. This was a real opportunity to see how the community, schools and parents come together to prepare students with special needs.

The class then headed to the Buena Vista Edible School Yard to learn about the Grimm Family Education Foundation (GFEF) and Grow Public Schools (GPS). GFEF President RJ Valentino and GPS CEO Doc Ervin presented on the intricacies of

the educational programs they spearhead in our community. After the presentations, it was time to EAT!

The Edible School Yard Kern County educators planned an Iron Chef competition where the class was able to compete with their culinary skills to create a unique flatbread for lunch using ingredients grown in the garden.

Then the class headed to Del Oro High School. Appearing more like a community college, Del Oro is the Kern High School District’s newest campus serving areas of East Bakersfield, Greenfield and Lamont. A tour was provided by Assistant Principal Chris Dutton and students Mia and Jackie. Mia and Jackie were the highlights of this visit as the trio explained their modern approach to day-to-day education.

Exhausted but awed from the warmer temperatures and touring Del Oro’s 58-acre campus, the class finished their day at the Kern Community College District’s Launchpad. Education Advisor, Freddie Rodriguez and Director Anthony Cordova explained that the mission of Launchpad is to assist aspiring entrepreneurs make their ideas and visions become

METRO | PAGE 10

attainable business models. Offering tuition-free workshops, the Launchpad is open to anyone in the community.

Dr. John Mendiburu, Associate Superintendent with the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, closed out the day with a personal and inspiring speech on leadership for educating the future. Inspired by mentors throughout his life from his mother to former Superintendent and consultant Jamie Henderson, Dr. Mendiburu shared experiences that led to his philosophies on leadership. Go slow to go fast to be sure not to leave anyone behind and to get it right.

Feel Good in Your Skin

Discover ā La Mode Luxury Aesthetics, Bakersfield's New Luxury Medspa

In the heart of Bakersfield, lies a new medspa that is changing the game when it comes to wellness and aesthetic treatments. ā La Mode Luxury Aesthetics is a one-stop-shop for anyone looking to improve their confidence and well-being through minimally invasive treatments, skincare and wellness.

With a team of experienced professionals and thanks to cutting-edge technology and their commitment to top-notch service, the spa has quickly become a popular destination for self-care in Bakersfield.

At the helm of this luxury medspa is the Founder and Medical Director, Dr. Shweta Agarwal (aka Dr. A). Dr. A has an extensive background in medicine and aesthetics, and believes that health and beauty start from within.

Dr. A understands that the desire to look and feel our best is universal. She also knows that true beauty comes from within and that healthy skin is an essential part of overall wellness. That's why she's on a mission to educate her community about the benefits of medical aesthetics.

“Everybody looks in the mirror and I think that we all want to look nice. Especially when we walk out of the house,” said Dr. A. “When I opened ā La Mode Medspa, I felt like as a community, we are much

more open to learning the right way of obtaining healthy skin, and I feel there is this awareness that needs to go around.”

Skin is the body's largest organ and it's essential to keep it healthy. She noted that skin conditions could be indicators of underlying health issues, and addressing them can lead to improved mental health and self-confidence.

“Medical aesthetics is an integral part of medicine that has to be incorporated in day-to-day living, and that's where ā La Mode comes in,” said Dr. A. “It's a luxury in the sense that you are coming to me in your health and happiness. But in a good way, it's not that you are coming here and doing these services and turning to somebody else and just not staying yourself.”

At ā La Mode Medspa, Dr. A and her team offer a range of minimally invasive treatments designed to enhance natural beauty and improve skin health. From Botox and fillers to laser treatments and facials, they use the latest technology and techniques to achieve stunning and safe results.

But it's not just about looking good; it's about feeling good too.

“I feel people when they're more confident facing themselves in the mirror, they are just better

METRO | PAGE 12

people,” she explained. “For example, when you look good, you are confident and you'll be very confident talking to others.”

For Dr. A, medical aesthetics is about more than just improving appearance. It's about helping people feel their best and promoting overall wellness. Through education and awareness, she hopes to make medical aesthetics a mainstream practice and an essential part of daily self-care.

“That's the way I look at it. That's the way I envision it. And when I opened a La Mode, I just thought that I would be able to make a good impact on the community here.”

Dr. A oversees and delivers all treatments herself, taking a great personal interest in her clients, their concerns and objectives. Her regular communication with each client, combined with her extensive background in medicine and aesthetics, ensures that all her clients receive the very best results.

From wellness treatments to body sculpting and facial rejuvenation, ā La Mode Medspa has something to offer everyone. The spa also provides non-surgical cosmetic treatments that can help clients achieve the look they desire without going under the knife.

Beyond the services offered, what sets ā La Mode Medspa apart is its seasoned clinical team. The team has advanced training and remains ahead of the latest techniques and trends. This ensures that their clients receive the best care possible and have access to the most up-to-date treatments available.

In recognition of the company’s efforts with customers, employees, and investors, Newsweek magazine has named California Water Service Group (Group) (NYSE: CWT) to its 2023 list of “America’s Most Trustworthy Companies.” The honor was given to Group by Newsweek and Statista Inc., a leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider, based on feedback and analysis regarding trust among the three stakeholder groups.
