MESSAGE FROM THE
Member Spotlight An artfully-restored roadside resort in the heart of Central California’s high desert. “We’d heard about Cuyama Buckhorn in a write-up the LA Times did. Hadn’t had any experience in that part of the high desert, but everything from the drive out to Cuyama, to our stay at the resort was fantastic. Friendly staff, gorgeous grounds and guest rooms with plenty of amenities, and a lovely restaurant and bar. Oh, and the pool! That was a treat as well. Really looking forward to visiting again.” – Recent Trip Advisor Review What’s in Cuyama? You might ask, and certainly a valid question for those who were not raised in the area and/ or didn’t grow up stopping into The Buckhorn for a bison burger or barbeque buffet on the way from Central California to the coast. Cuyama Valley, known as The Hidden Valley of Enchantment, is Santa Barbara County’s high desert, and is located directly between Bakersfield and Santa Maria on Historic Route 166. This breathtaking valley is home to the town of New Cuyama, home to roughly 550 residents. New Cuyama was originally developed by Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (AKA ARCO) in the 1950s, at which time Cuyama Buckhorn was established as a destination retreat and community hub. The historic Cuyama Buckhorn has been through many iterations over the years, and most who know of the iconic establishment have some version of its past ingrained in their brain. In recent years, the property had been completely closed and was only briefly opened prior to undergoing its most recent transformation. The duo behind LA-based design-build firm, iDGroup, Jeff Vance and Ferial Sadeghian, discovered the property was on the market after years of searching for a hospitality endeavor to transform into an unexpected destination. And unexpected it was — at least to most. However, to Vance and Sadeghian, long-time enthusiasts of mid-century architecture, The Buckhorn was an exciting opportunity. They knew the area and the property, as Vance is a former METRO | PAGE 4
resident of Pine Mountain Club, just a 40-minute drive from The Buckhorn, and an avid roadlife aficionado. To these two visionaries, the historic property boasted unique potential and beamed with unmistakable history. Vance and Sadeghian have been renovating the property since March of 2018. What was once a roadside mid-century motel, has been completely transformed into a highly acclaimed, award-winning destination resort, featuring 21 revitalized guest rooms with stylistic nods to the past. Other property highlights include a glistening heated pool with sunset views, a spacious jacuzzi and barrel sauna, outdoor fire pits and games, a full-service farm-to-table restaurant and bar serving elevated comfort food and hyper-local seasonal menus and drinks, and a craft coffee shop and market. The resort also features both indoor and outdoor venue spaces for memorable celebrations in a truly one-ofa-kind location. Just one hour from Bakersfield, Cuyama Buckhorn is an unforgettable getaway that will leave you feeling like you were on a faraway vacation, while being just a short distance from home. Or, just stop off for a thoughtfullyprepared meal on your way to Central California’s coast. We are pleased to offer our fellow Chamber members 15 percent off resort stays with code CHAMBERCB15! Visit cuyamabuckhorn.com and enter the promo code at booking. We look forward to hosting you at our revitalized, resort retreat! Book your getaway now!
