Ben Mankiewicz would be interested in the Oscars anyway, but this year, the film industry’s top event also is very much a family matter for him. The longtime Turner Classic Movies host is the grandson of Herman J. Mankiewicz, the co-writer (with director and title star Orson Welles) of 1941’s legendary “Citizen Kane” – and the subject of “Mank,” the most-nominated picture in the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony, to be staged in the coronavirus-pandemic era for the first time as ABC televises it Sunday, April 25. The show will be broadcast principally from Los Angeles’ Union Station, permitting social distancing for attendees, while the traditional Oscar setting of Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre still will be used for certain elements of the special. Nominated for best picture, “Mank” is in the running for a total of 10 Oscars also including best actor (Gary Oldman), supporting actress (Amanda Seyfried) and director (David Fincher). “It’s a very particular movie about the struggles of an artist who sort of hated himself and hated the business and couldn’t get out of his own way,” Ben Mankiewicz reflects, “but he was the guy everybody wanted to be around. He was the smartest, funniest guy in the room.” While he normally is analytical when it comes to movies, Mankiewicz notes that “what makes me emotional” about “Mank” is that his late father, veteran political insider Frank Mankiewicz, “didn’t get to see this movie about his father. Elizabeth Singleton Moss was born on July 24, 1982, in Los Angeles to two musicians. The eldest of their two children, she initially intended to be a dancer, studying at New York’s School of American Ballet and with ballerina Suzanne Farrell at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. – but acting roles kept coming her way. In 1999, Moss began the first television part with which she became closely associated, Zoey Bartlet – youngest of the three daughters of the President and the First Lady (Martin Sheen, Stockard Channing) – on “The West Wing.” In a particularly memorable storyline, Zoey’s kidnapping prompted the chief executive to turn control of the Oval Office over to the Speaker of the House (John Goodman) temporarily. After making movies including “Girl, Interrupted,” “Mumford” and “The
Missing,” Moss started the role of secretary and later copywriter Peggy Olson on the much-praised, 1960s-set ad-agency drama series “Mad Men.” Earning six Primetime Emmy Award nominations for the show during its run, she also made her Broadway debut in David Mamet’s “Speedthe-Plow.” Other plays she has done include “The Children’s Hour” and “The Heidi Chronicles.” The mystery miniseries “Top of the Lake” brought Moss a Golden Globe Award. Her movies of recent years have included 2020’s “The Invisible Man,” one of the last major films released before many theaters closed due to the coronavirus pandemic; it quickly became an On Demand streaming feature.

5 p.m. on HGTV $50K Three Ways Some homeowners are lucky enough to be able to afford giving their home a makeover, but their lack of a creative vision keeps them paralyzed with indecision and unable to turn their fantasy home into a reality. In this new home improvement series, interior designer Tiffany Brooks presents homeowners with three dramatically different design plans for three completely different spaces within their homes, and also helps them choose which proposal works best for their family. Another episode immediately follows. 6 p.m. on HGTV Inside Out Southern California-based home renovators Carmine Sabatella and Mike Pyle know that a beautifully updated house calls for great design both indoors and out. As co-hosts of this new home series, interior designer Sabatella and landscape designer Pyle pitch their respective ideas to clients, each hoping to wind up with the lion’s share of the fixed budget. In the series premiere, the clients are newlyweds who spent their honeymoon money on a fixer upper. First priority: figuring out whose part of the budget will pay to fix some built-in problems. 8 p.m. on KERO Sesame Street: 50 Years of Sunny Days This new two-hour documentary celebrates the first half-century anniversary, as well as the legacy and cross-cultural impact, of the groundbreaking TV show for children, and how “Sesame Street” has used universal tools such as music, empathy and celebrity to address such complicated issues as homelessness, diversity and addiction. The special also chronicles the creation of a Black family of Muppets as part of the show’s new racial justice initiative. Guests include John Legend, Whoopi Goldberg, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Gloria Estefan, Lucy Liu, Chrissy Teigen, 16 16 Usher and Olivia Munn.

A spin down memory lane in the season premiere of ‘Top Gear’ Fans of BBC America’s “Top Gear” love it for its blend of outrageous vehicular stunts, car knowledge and levity. But in the Season 30 premiere, things take a turn for the sentimental. In the episode debuting Sunday, April 25 (and also streaming on AMC+), hosts Freddie Flintoff, Chris Harris and Paddy McGuinness drive the vehicles of their childhood, their fathers’ cars, through the Lake District of northwestern England. The memories that came to them were overwhelming as they cruised through the scenic countryside. Harris, who was initially uncomfortable with the idea of delving into his personal life on camera, forgot all that once he got behind the wheel of the replica of the BMW 323i his dad drove. “I think it reminds us of how much of our formative years ... spent with our parents were spent in a motor vehicle,”
he explains, “because that’s where you went to school, you went to your clubs, you went to sports clubs on the weekend, you visited relatives, you went on holiday. How many significant conversations did you have with your parents in a motor car rather than in the home? And it all starts to come back and then you start to realize that the way that your parents interacted with their cars or particularly your father in this case was almost a projection of their personality. So it was a really interesting exercise.” Among other segments this season include a punishing off-road adventure in the Scottish Highlands, a consideration of mid-life crisis cars, a race with a man in a jet pack and a test drive of some of the most iconic cars from James Bond movies, including the Aston Martin DB5 from “Goldfinger,” complete with oil slick and smoke machines and fake guns in the tail and fog lights.
