When she began her current television role, Catherine Bell didn’t know she’d play a witch this long. Having launched the Hallmark Channel franchise with a series of TV movies, the actress returns as the magical Cassie when the weekly version of “Good Witch” starts its seventh season Sunday, May 16. While whimsy and romance remain present, the new round also has a continuing mystery involving pouches of soil that Cassie (Bell, also an executive producer of the show) and her cousins Abigail and Joy (Sarah Power and “Wynonna Earp’s” Katherine Barrell) have acquired. “Every once in a while, I’ll see one of the original movies and think, ‘Wow. We’ve come so far,’ ” the pleasant Bell notes. “The first movie was 13 years ago, which seems like a lifetime. When we started the series, we changed things a little bit. Giving Cassie a teenage daughter and a new relationship (with James Denton’s Dr. Sam Radford, now Cassie’s husband) made her magic a little less effective, and I think that just makes it more interesting. She’s not perfect. “She’s still very positive, though,” adds Bell. “She has a beautiful perspective on life, which is what I think draws so many people to the show. The movies were a slow evolution, then things flashed forward about 10 years in the series, and even that has evolved. Now,

That’s been fun, because we’d gotten away from that.” One episode that lets “Good Witch” shake things up – somewhat literally – this season has a “Grease” theme. “That was so much fun to do,” Bell confirms. “It should be a delight for fans to see us in those different roles. The costumes and sets were amazing.” As for which character she represents, Bell reveals that she’s “a little more Sandy. Remember when Olivia Newton-John wore the black tights at the end of the movie?” Also a staple of Hallmark movies such as the recent “Meet Me at Christmas,” Bell reprised her “JAG” role as Lt. Col. Sarah “Mac” MacKenzie in several episodes of CBS’ “NCIS: Los Angeles.” The coronavirus pandemic thwarted her planned return to that show, but she hints it still isn’t out of the question. “I was supposed to make another appearance this season,” she confirms, “but with COVID, everything was thrown off. By the time they started filming, I was headed to Canada (for ‘Good Witch’ and other work). Scott Gemmill, the (‘NCIS: LA’) showrunner, is a dear friend – we worked together on ‘JAG’ – and we talk all the time, so there’s the idea of bringing Mac back somewhere.”

METCALFE Jesse Metcalfe was born on Dec. 9, 1978, in Carmel Valley Village, Calif. He was a basketball player during his teenage years in Waterford, Conn., and though he later studied at New York University, he dropped out to begin a fiveyear run as Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald on the daytime serial “Passions.” Metcalfe began his primetime television work as gardener John Rowland on “Desperate Housewives,” playing the part full-time in the show’s first season and then returning on a recurring basis. A movie career started for Metcalfe with the title role in the comedy “John Tucker Must Die.” His films in the years immediately afterward included “Insanitarium,” “The Other End of the Line,” “Beyond a Reasonable Doubt” and “The Tortured.”
The series “Chase,” which also starred Kelli Giddish before she joined “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” gave Metcalfe a one-season run as a member of a Texas-based team of fugitive hunters. He stayed in a Texas setting for his subsequent TV role, playing Bobby Ewing’s (Patrick Duffy) adopted son Christopher in a continuation of “Dallas” that ran three seasons. In recent years, Metcalfe’s primary TV “homes” have been Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, for which he has done considerable work in series and standalone movies. He was one of the founding cast members of the drama “Chesapeake Shores,” also composing music for the show, but he won’t return when the drama begins its fifth season Aug. 15.

Nancy Travis and ‘Last Man Standing’ turn the lights out ... again This time, apparently, it’s really the last stand for “Last Man Standing.” Canceled by ABC in 2017, the Tim Allenstarring sitcom was revived a year later by Fox ... where the show concludes its total nine-season run with a one-hour telecast Thursday, May 20. Its stories involve Mike Baxter (Allen) preparing daughter Kristin (Amanda Fuller) to handle the future of the Outdoor Man store chain, and the search for Mike’s prized green truck after it’s stolen. Co-star Nancy Travis, who has played Mike’s wife Vanessa, says filming the finale at the end of March was “like going through having a child taken from you. It was very emotional, and not just for the actors but for the crew and the writers and everyone who has worked on the show. It was a really sad departure.” It also was the sort of departure the “Last Man Standing” team didn’t have when the series’ first run ended, since that thensurprising cancellation notice came after work on Season 6 already had wrapped.
Travis acknowledges that “felt like the rug had been pulled out from under us, but going into this season, we had the perk of knowing it would be the last. Ironically, though, that also was very painful because doing each episode was like slowly ripping the bandage off a cut. I don’t know if either way is good when it’s a job that you really enjoy and love doing.” A big part of that, Travis maintains, has been working with “Home Improvement” alum Allen. “It’s been a pleasure,” she reflects. “Honestly, I’ve learned so much from him. It’s been very collaborative, and the same goes for the writers, who helped me find what worked for me and for Vanessa.” While Travis wishes she’d had more scenes with fellow series regular Héctor Elizondo, she also has enjoyed playing “mom” to the actresses portraying her daughters – including Kaitlyn Dever, who returns in the finale as Eve, a role she left to focus on her burgeoning career in movies such as “Booksmart.”

“The Bachelorette” (ABC — season premiere, June 7) Quick-witted marketing manager Katie Thurston, who became an instant fan favorite during Season 25 of “The Bachelor” by being unabashedly herself while pursuing Bachelor Matt James, is in the driver’s seat in Season 17 of this female-driven spinoff, which is filmed in New Mexico.
