DIY: Colored Flames For Your Outdoor Fireplace! Halloween is the perfect time of year to introduce a bit of magic into your outdoor get together with colored flames! An outdoor fireplace or fire pit provides a cozy way to enjoy chilly evenings outside. Next time you invite some friends over or just gather the family, think about adding some color to your outdoor experience. It doesn’t take a lot of skill to mix up a solution that turns pinecones into bursts of color. Be creative – one big splash of color or different colors mixed together. Remember to just do this activity for an outdoor fire pit on a wood-burning fire. It’s not for indoor use. Here’s how: Step 1: Gather pinecones from a trip to the mountains or buy some at a craft supply store. Step 2: Assemble supplies: rubber gloves, tongs, a large bucket (at least a gallon).
You will also need a coloragent based on which color you want: Yellow – table salt Yellow-green – borax White – Epsom salt Green – Boric acid (look in the first aid isle at most drug stores) Red – Strontium chloride (available at aquarium supply stores as Marine Buffer or Calcium Reactor) Purple – Potassium Chloride (available where water softener products are sold) Step 3: Turn on the oven to 150 –
200 degrees. Put the pinecones on a cookie sheet lined with tinfoil. Step 4: Bake the pinecones for one hour to completely dry them. Check periodically during the hour. (If you purchase pinecones from a store, they are already dried out.) Step 5: Mix 1 cup of colorant with a half-gallon of hot water in the bucket. You must use different buckets for different colors, or wash the bucket completely to avoid combining chemicals. Add the pinecones, covering the cones completely. Soak overnight or for 8 hours. (Keep away from kids and pets.) Step 6: Remove pinecones from solution using tongs and set on newspaper to dry. Follow these precautions: Use only with outdoor wood burning fireplaces, not gas or propane. Use caution with chemicals, and avoid contact with skin or eyes. Don’t put chemicals in contact with an open flame. Don’t cook over a chemically-treated color flame. Watch your children and don’t let them handle the cones and fire. Have fun!
