What advice do you have for people who are considering solar?
Our office headquarters are in Fresno, and we recently opened an office in Bakersfield. We make it a point to give back to the community that gives us so much. The past two years we have provided two families with a complimentary solar system by way of our “Solar System Giveaway;” winners are chosen by a random drawing. We focus on providing fundraising support for youth and adult sports, support local charities such as Veterans, Rotary Clubs, and participate in community events such as Earth Day festivities and Toys for Tots annual toy drive.
The following questions should be considered. How long has the manufacturer been building solar panels? Does this manufacturer actually have a Research and Development department working to improve their product? What is the current wattage of each panel and the efficiency rating? What is the degradation factor (or loss of efficiency) over time? How will this impact my future needs of electricity? How long is the warranty for the panels? SunPower has higher wattage and efficiency outputs for the standard 3’x5’ panel. This means fewer panels on your roof for the same or better outcome in performance. 15 Tips for Summer Fun and Safety Halfway into swim season, parents start to hear, “I’m bored!” Keep the fun going and stay cool with these tips for swimming pool activities: Throw a spontaneous pool party Don’t wait for a special occasion, or feel like you need to make a big meal. Make a few calls or text messages and get the party started. Buy or create new pool toys Pool hoops or volleyball provide something to do for 2 people or 20. See what you or your kids can come up with for making your own pool toys. Here’s one to get you started: Pool noodle javelin throw – make a circle out of a pool noodle and duct tape. Cut a pool noodle(s) in half to create a ‘javelin,’ and let the throwing contest begin. See how many games you can come up with – longest distance throw, highest number of consecutive ‘throws,’ etc. Make an underwater movie Buy an inexpensive disposable waterproof camera, dive in, and load up your Instagram account. Do a no-sweat workout Water exercises are a great way to get moving and you’ll barely feel the burn. The natural resistance of the water makes movement more effective and buoyancy can help prevent injury. So, turn on some music and jump in! Take a dip in the pool at night Throw in some glow sticks and dive in, or blow up a balloon with a glow stick inside to create a floating lantern. Establish firm pool rules and practices to keep kids, pets, and adults safe. A few safety suggestions: Never swim alone Kids and adults should always swim
with someone nearby. Young or inexperienced swimmers need to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Floaties aren’t enough to prevent drowning. Appoint a ‘designated watcher’ for family gatherings with small children. No running around the pool, and no diving in the shallow end. The deck can be slippery, and there’s no official lifeguard in your backyard to blow a whistle. Mark the water depth, and let an adult be the one to designate a safe diving area, if the pool has a deep end. Keep all riding toys and electrical appliances away from the pool deck. Bicycles, tricycles, and skateboards can cause accidents, and electricity plus water is a shock hazard. Have appropriate safety equipment If there are children in the home, or if they visit regularly, install a fence (at least 4 ft. high) around the pool with a self-closing and self-latching gate. Never leave the gate propped open. Also make sure that the drain has a proper cover; the suction from a drain can cause drowning for both children and adults. Install alarms on doors and windows that have pool access. Consider a surface wave or underwater alarm. Water rescue equipment, such as a ring buoy or Shepherd’s Crook, should be within a few feet of the pool. Take pool toys out of the pool when you finish swimming. Toys in the pool are a temptation to kids that could result in drowning. Also pool chlorine doesn’t clean pool toys. The
toys need separate cleaning to prevent illness. Periodic cleaning with a water and bleach mixture keeps everyone healthy. You want to enjoy your pool as long as possible, which in Fresno, may extend into October. A few tips for maintaining your pool all season long: Rinse off before getting into the pool Rinsing before swimming removes oil, sweat, lotions, cosmetics and soaps on our skin, hair, and bathing suit that affect the cleanliness of the pool. Soap and lotion residue contribute to poor water quality and increase the opportunity for waterborne illness and swimmer’s ear. Keep filters clean Clean filters maximize your pool’s efficiency. Certain filters, such as cartridge filters, don’t require any backwashing, which saves water. Remove debris such as leaves, bugs and trash daily to keep the water in your pool clean. Keep your dog out of the pool We know, it’s really fun to swim with your dog. But dog hair clogs your pool filter and makes the pool work harder. Also, chlorine isn’t good for a dog’s skin. If you can’t keep your dog out of the water, a chlorine level under 3.0 PPM is best. Throw in a tennis ball to absorb oil Tennis ball fibers help absorb oils, such as suntan lotions, which keeps your pool cleaner. Consider ways to cool your pool Swimming pool water gets hot after a few 100+ degree days, making it not very fun to swim. A pool cooler is a device that is similar to a heat pump and must be installed by a professional. It’s a little pricey, but the 10-15 degree drop in temperature is worth it to many people. Another way to cool your pool is to install a fountain that aerates the water and drops the water temperature, especially when the fountain runs in the cooler night air. Happy summer, everyone!
