MARKET REPORT OCTOBER 2019

The city does not like uncertainty or the thought of a Brexit without a deal. The end of August / early Sept has seen a “can of worms” with massive uncertainty and the possibility of a hard exit becoming a real possibility.
The Pound has reflected this and fell to a low against the Dollar not seen since 1985.

ENERGY A fairly quiet and stable month on crude oil with prices depressed by forecasts of a slowing world economy. There appeared to be no new major developments in the middle east until a drone strike was made on Saudi oil refineries early September sending crude oil higher.
DRIED FRUIT
DAIRY
Palm
Greek Currants
The second half of August has seen a rise in butter prices as cream prices increased and buying activity increased as buyers returned from holiday. There are large stocks of butter around so it is hard to imagine that this is the start of any major up trend.
Palm has been trading higher over the week driven by strong physical demand and support from Dalian futures market. In the wake of the further escalating trade war between US and China heavy buying activity on the Dalian was noted. Strong physical demand mainly came from China and India last month so far. It remains to be seen if this push in demand will continue into September, as India is rumoured to have bought ahead of a potential import tax increases for palm oil originating from Malaysia.
Both SPOMA and MPOA came with production updates, showing production down around 5% MoM in Malaysia after the first 20 days of the month. Rapeseed Overall, the market is very quiet and harvest is done almost everywhere. Farmers selling is slowing down and not much happened since the recent rally. Due to decent biodiesel margins and the low availability of physical oil, 2019 positions are still very well supported. The EU and Ukraine crop estimates remain unchanged at very low 17.0 mln mt for the EU (with maybe more downside potential) and 3.0-3.3. mln mt for Ukraine.
The market focus remains on the first half of 2020, where the Supply and Demand is starting to look extremely tight. Olive Some underlying support is coming from concerns over some questions over the prospect for the next 2019-20 olive oil crop, as there has been some extreme above normal temperatures across parts of the Mediterranean. There has been some stress on olive trees in the country which already suffered from significantly belownormal rainfall earlier this year. Major losses of fruits are reported from the key producing state of Andalusia. The poor weather conditions in the spring and early summer are already set the stage for below-normal Spanish olive oil.
As a result, the market is talking about a much lower than expected crop in Spain this year of around 1.3 million tonnes (due to problems during the blossoming phase of development).
Harvesting is now taking place, but has been delayed this year and won’t be fully complete until October. Only the very first batches of raw material are being delivered by growers and only the largest of packers are able to offer. The current crop estimate is around 30% more than last year, roughly 19,500 tonnes, which is considered to be a decent crop for Greece with the largest of seasons yielding up to 25,000 tonnes. The Peloponnese are where all of Greece’s Currants are grown (with some small amounts from the island of Zante), they have had brilliant dry weather for the last month meaning the overall quality of this harvest’s fruit will be excellent. Demand is very strong at the moment due to there being no available fruit in the market from 2018’s crop so packers aren’t discounting significantly. 2018 saw a disappointing crop yield of barely 15,000 tonnes meaning there was not enough crop to cover the export demand.
So, the two key questions now are; how many customers will have managed to engineer the product out of their recipes due to lack of availability from the last two seasons? And, will the estimated crop size of 19 500 tonnes be enough to cover the total export demand? It’s our belief that these two factors will play a big role in pricing this season. Sultanas The harvest began after the holidays and most of the fruit that has been harvested is still drying. The weather conditions remain very favourable with optimal conditions to dry vine fruit. Demand is strong for September shipment as the industry has been trying to run a short stock of 2018 crop and take advantage of the 2019 crop prices. This keeps the market tense. Some might be surprised to see 2019 crop prices above 2018’s, despite a good new crop (quality and quantity). Early Sept saw the Ministry of Agriculture declare the TMO (The Turkish Grain Board) would enter the market on the buying side if prices were to drop below 10 trl / Kg. The crop had been officially estimated at 300,000 tons.
Some growers complain that the yields might not be as high as expected. It seems the lack of labour dictates the timing of harvest rather than the ideal brix level in the fruit. Labour availability is increasingly becoming an issue for growers in Turkey.
SMP continues to increase as we reach the bottom of seasonal milk production. Cheese, yet again, little changed.
MARKET REPORT
OILS AND FATS
NUTS & SEEDS Coconut Prices are starting to pick up particularly in Indonesia where reports are coming through of drier than average conditions nearing on dangerous levels for the coconut harvest. The Sambu plantation in Sumatra has been particularly hard hit, even though they have the advantage over competitors of a fully irrigated canal network spanning over 100,000 hectares, it has just not been possible to retain enough water to keep the canals functioning properly. To maintain a good volume of nut supply to the factory door the gate price has had to be raised accordingly. In the Philippines, it is a very mixed bag with some shippers being sold out to the end of 2019 and others still with plenty to sell at discount levels.
Forward offers are made with a high premium to offset the building risk of a correction in the veg oil markets which some see as long overdue. Almonds We will not see a new revised, official ‘objective’ report of the 2019 crop harvest until January, but the subjective sentiment is that the new crop is considerably higher than the official number stated 2 months ago.
As a result, exporters are jockeying to offer better prices and get orders in. So, we have seen a decline in pricing over the last 6 weeks. After December, when the new number comes out, we might see a further significant correction.

NATIONAL BAKING WEEK With the competition on Great British Bake Off really starting to heat up, there has probably been no better time to get involved with baking than National Baking Week, which takes place between 14th-20th October.
National Baking Week is always about getting the country baking. This year, it falls between 14th - 20th October, and it’s all about getting Britain to ‘Bake and Share’ which makes it perfect for getting your friends, family, customers or staff involved! HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED? Getting involved with National Baking Week is easier than you think and there are plenty of ways to go about it. Baking doesn’t have to be time-consuming. There are plenty of recipes - scones for example - which can be completed within half an hour. Be sure to get as many people as possible involved with your activities. With every recipe, there is usually a number of different processes involved. This is the perfect opportunity for everybody to have a job that suits themselves. Many of our readers might have some fond memories from baking with parents or grandparents when they were younger. It’s true that baking makes us happy and by getting more young people involved with National Baking Week, we can help to create more memories for our own children or grandchildren. RAISE MONEY FOR CHARITY The organisers of National Baking Week have been keen supporters of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charities. Why not host a bake sale and set aside a proportion of any profits to go towards these charities? A free downloadable Bake Sale Pack is available from the National Baking Week website containing everything you need: posters, invitation cards, buntings, price flags, recipe cards and more.
You can visit www.nationalbakingweek.co.uk for more information.
