MARKET REPORT FEBRUARY 2020
WELL THAT’S ANOTHER TRADING YEAR OVER! 2019 was an interesting year for commodity trading to say the least. We had the usual wars, floods, typhoons, too much rain, too much heat, too little rain etc, etc. Then to add to the usual ups and downs that drive markets, Donald Trump's trade wars and sanctions caused disruption in the world markets along with Brexit, which added a new dimension to the value of the Pound.
Lets hope 2020 is a more stable year.

Sterling soared as the Conservative Party won an overall majority in the general election. As traders dared to hope that the party’s strong majority would remove uncertainty over Brexit, the currency leapt 2.2% to $1.34, its highest level since May last year. The pound also jumped to a three-and-a-half-year high against the Euro.
This euphoria was short lived and Sterling fell back to 1.29 as markets continue to react negatively to Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s new Withdrawal Agreement Bill, which limits the ‘transition period’ for the UK’s leaving the EU to before the end of December 2020.
ENERGY
Butter prices remain stable with little trade taking place. SMP prices continue to increase month on month with big demand on the world market.
Oil headed for its biggest annual increase since 2016, as OPEC’s production cuts tempered supplies while a trade pact between the U.S. and China buoyed the outlook for demand.
Cheese prices remain stable with little change noted.
Futures have climbed 36% this year, and were heading towards $70 a barrel as 2019 came to an end. Prices have picked up in the past few months as OPEC and its allies agreed to deepen the output cutbacks they’ve made this year, while Washington and Beijing cooled a tariff battle that had weighed on financial markets for much of 2019.
OILS AND FATS Palm Palm oil prices have continued to rally with support still coming from lower production estimates and expectations of strong demand, although the sharp rallies in palm oil prices are now seen affecting demand. The substitution to other vegetable oils is seen as limited due to lack of supplies, which is also increasing the prices of soy oil and sunflower oil. A recent report suggested that palm oil and other vegetable oil prices have now become uncompetitive relative to fossil fuels. This is sharply reducing discretionary consumption and is also leading to a decline in biodiesel production in certain countries, as it makes biodiesel production uneconomic even if mandated. Some of the fundamental, underlying, support is still coming from lower than expected production in the two major producing countries, due to lower fertiliser usage and a fall in the crop cycle after high production in the previous year. In Indonesia: palm oil production fell short of expectations in October and November.
The decline in Indonesian palm oil export supplies is magnified by rising domestic consumption of palm oil for biodiesel production.
DRIED FRUIT Turkish As the year drew to a close, buyers were beginning to look to cover their requirements of dried fruit through until the new crop next August. Exports of Turkish sultanas and raisins have reached 89,000 tonnes, compared with 93,000 tonnes at the same period last year. This is a drop of 5% and perhaps reflects the higher prices this year or a general reduction in use. The good news, however, is that sales to the UK for the same period have increased to over 25,000 tonnes which keeps the UK as the largest export customer for Turkey. Raw material prices in Turkey have remained stable, with the Turkish Grain Board continuing to offer farmers a price of TRY10 (USD 1.72) per kilo. This is holding prices up and it remains to be seen whether this policy will continue in the new year.
The total Turkish vine fruit crop is thought to exceed 300,000 tonnes this year, so if sales continue at the present level, there is likely to be a significant quantity of fruit unsold at the end of the season. Another factor that has an impact on prices is the value of the Turkish lira against the US dollar. To date, this has been relatively stable and with the recent increase in sterling against the US dollar, prices have decreased for UK buyers.
Rapeseed Rapeseed oil prices jumped sharply, after trading sideways for most of the month, with strength coming from high rapeseed prices and gains on other competing vegetable oils. Despite a very tight supply and demand situation this year, with production falling for the second year in a row, the rapeseed oil market has stayed remarkably stable compared to the sharp gains in both the soy oil and palm oil markets and a higher sunflower oil market which has narrowed the price gap between the competing commodities.
In the nearby months, rapeseed is still the most expensive oil, but most buyers have now extended cover well into 2020. The most noticeable development is that the price gap between sunflower oil and rapeseed oils has narrowed significantly from May 2020 onwards which could see some demand switch back to rapeseed oil.
Currants Sales of Greek currants have been steady. This year’s crop is of excellent quality, with a total availability of more than 22,000 tonnes. It is reported that the Greek Ministry of Agriculture has extended the date when growers need to pass their fruit to local packers to obtain the subsidy to January 10.
NUTS & SEEDS Almonds Europe wide shortages of raw material almonds for processing is still a factor with the continued delay of new crop shipments. Monthly export figures still show strong exports. There will be no formal announcement of the size of the 2019 crop until late January, raw material prices remain stable till then. December prices held, Jan prices offer a moderate discount.
MARKET REPORT
DAIRY
January should see new crop figures and the feeling is that the crop will be noticeably lower than that of last year, when combined with firm monthly export numbers, February prices are expected to rise. Walnuts Indian origin is rising, fuelled by strong domestic demand, especially on the lighter grades.
Prices have risen in USD, crop estimates are still not confirmed as receipts are still to come in and be counted. Rain and cooler weather in the later part of the year are strong indicators that the bloom will be lower than the previous year and prices will remain strong. Pecans Reports on the pre-Mexican and US harvests were that both the new crops were looking smaller than last year – however this now seems to be a little more optimistic. There are isolated offers coming out of Mexico at lower levels but these are reported to be from less credible suppliers and/or those who have carry over stock which they are keen to shift before the season starts to meaningfully trade.
Pre-harvest has seen forward offer prices move up to narrow the gap between halves and pieces by increasing the export prices for pieces. However that doesn’t seem to have attracted much, if any, interest and consequently prices have eased, albeit not yet back down to where they were at the end of the old crop from the more accredited credible processors in origin .
The expectation is that prices could reduce further in the new year, although much depends on the price that packers will pay to local producers.

REAL BREAD WEEK
rises again for 2020! The 22nd February through to the 1st March 2020 signifies a time to celebrate all things artisan and the creation of additive-free loaves of real bread. The aim of the week is simple, to encourage people to buy real bread from local, independent bakeries (look out for those with the loaf mark). Alternatively, the week also encourages consumers to make their own bread based foods and understand what’s in the food they eat. The week is set up by charity, Sustain, who receive no financial support apart from through donations to help them support small, independent bakeries and continue to champion the production of real bread. Their aim is simple, to make bread more nutritious and delicious whilst minimising the impact on the planet. This year will mark the 12th year of Real Bread Week, the 2020 campaign will heavily feature enterprises and projects around the UK that benefit from baking. For example, Bad Boys Bakery and Freedom Bakery, which are located in London and Glasgow respectively. These two projects aim to offer life skills and employment opportunities for those in prison so that they can be reintegrated into society following release with prospects. There are also projects that aim to help those who suffer with mental health and those seeking asylum. As part of the week, we want to encourage all of our valued customers to join in and show off your bread making skills. You can get involved online and share your story with the hashtag #WeAreRealBread. You can also register to run your own event or activity to promote the week, this could be a tasting event or even a class. If you do run an event, remember to add it to the calendar on the Sustain website.

PERFECTLY BAKED VEST CARRIER BAGS We are changing the material of the perfectly baked vest carriers to a degradable material, but how does the Oxo-biodegradable plastic work?
With TDPA™
Without TDPA™
14
The chemical degradation process involves the reaction of very large polymer molecules of plastics, which contain only carbon and hydrogen, with oxygen in the air. This reaction occurs even without prodegradant additives but at a very slow rate. That is why conventional plastics, when discarded, persist for a long time in the environment. EPI's TDPA™ formulations catalyse or accelerate this reaction and increase the rate of the degradation by several orders of magnitute - ie. 100's to 1000's times faster making TDPA™ incorporated products degrade and physically disintegrate within a few weeks to 1 - 2 years, depending on the formulation and the disposal environment. To illustrate, a TDPA™ incorporated plastic bag and a conventional plastic bag were hung on the fence and the difference in degradation rates was observed in the degradation test. These lower molecular weight fragments are known to, and have been shown, in laboratory simulated composts, to biodegrade into carbon dioxide, water and biomass (cell structure of micro-organisms), which are materials found in nature and part of the biocycle. Commercially available LDPE films incorporating TDPA™ have been shown to convert 60% of their carbon backbone into carbon dioxide in 1.5 - 2 years with most of the balance of the carbon remaining as micro-organism cells. Unmodified films would take much longer to achieve this.
