Weight gain during menopause tied to brain changes

What’s the best make up for winter? By Phillipa Hogg Seasons change, as do makeup trends and colours. In winter you will find yourself becoming a little paler in the face simply as you’re not out in the sun as often as you are in summer; which means you may need to go one shade lighter than normal. In summer a lighter translucent look is often the key where as in winter a more dramatic matte look works well; this however doesn’t mean dry caked on makeup. Keeping skin well hydrated will help with a perfect complexion, a hydrating primer will make this possible. The key is to keep the look fresh but also finished.

Lean Food for Lean Muscle

Foods to encourage production of lean muscle and help burn fat stores all have high protein and low carbohydrate ratios. Protein is what your body uses to build muscle, however any excess protein is not stored in your body, that is why it is imperative to get protein in your diet as often as possible if you are trying to build lean muscle - try and eat 6 small meals rather than 3 big ones, to stop yourself snacking on things that arent helping your muscle production. o

Lean meats. Think turkey, ham, skin free chicken breast

o

Nuts. Almonds and brazil nuts are the top contenders

o

Fish. Oily fish is the best so try tuna, salmon and mackerel

mid-life or later on. “Women may be particularly motivated to maintain a healthy weight in the postmenopausal years, should it be confirmed that weight gain causes alteration in brain function that is important to quality of life,” Soreca and colleagues conclude. Australia’s “worst case scenario” 6,000 Swine Flu Deaths SYDNEY (Reuters) - As many as 6,000 people could die from H1N1 in Australia this season in a “worst case scenario” if no preventive measures or vaccines are found, Australian Health Minister Nicola Roxon has said. The H1N1 influenza has killed 21 people in Australia so far and there are 10,387 confirmed cases, according to data compiled by Australia’s health department at time of printing. “We could expect around 6,000 deaths across the country,” Roxon told local radio. “That is the really worst case scenario that is being projected at the moment.” Each year a few thousand Australians die from influenza. The World Health Organization has confirmed 429 deaths and 94,512 cases of H1N1, declaring a pandemic last month. But these numbers represent only a fraction of the real cases. Swine flu is the dominant flu in Australia this southern hemisphere winter and authorities say they have ordered 21 million doses of swine flu vaccine still under development. They say that should be enough for half the 21 million population with multiple doses. The U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention says at least a million people have been infected with H1N1 and the virus is spreading out of control. Disease control experts say the death rate from H1N1 is similar to the death rate from seasonal influenza, which kills anywhere between 250,000 and 500,000 people globally each year.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Healthy women who put on weight between the premenopausal and postmenopausal years risk losing nerve cells in the brain, research suggests. Gaining weight is a “highly modifiable” risk factor that may be targeted to prevent or slow the progression of potentially harmful age-related changes in the brain, the University of Pittsburgh-based study team suggests in the June issue of Psychosomatic Medicine. Dr. Isabella Soreca and colleagues analyzed brain imaging data obtained from 48 healthy older women who were tracked over a 20-year period as part of the longitudinal epidemiological Pittsburgh Healthy Women Study. They report in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine that an increase in body weight during the transition to menopause and beyond was “uniquely associated” with a lower volume of gray matter (the portion of the brain containing nerve cell bodies). Soreca and colleagues say this finding is “particularly noteworthy” given that these were healthy older women who entered menopause naturally and had no history of cardiovascular disease or psychiatric disease and none were obese in

Breastfed bab ies may become smar ter teens By Amy Norton

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - High school students who were breastfed as infants may outperform their bottle-fed peers at school, a new study suggests. A number of studies have linked breastfeeding to higher childhood IQ, but questions remain about whether the benefit comes from breast milk, per se. Mothers who choose to breastfeed may, for instance, be more educated, have higher IQs or provide a generally more stimulating environment for their babies. The new study, based on a national survey of U.S. high school students and their parents, included 191 sibling pairs in which one had been breastfed and one had been formula-fed. Comparing such siblings helps control for hard-to-measure factors, like parents’ intelligence and the family environment that may account for the link between breastfeeding and school performance. The researchers found that even between siblings, breastfeeding did appear to make a difference. On average, breastfed siblings had a 12 percent to 14 percent higher grade point average (GPA) in high school, and were somewhat more likely to go to college. What’s more, GPA tended to inch upward with each additional month of breastfeeding, as did the odds of attending college, according to findings published in the Journal of Human Capital. Much of the connection seemed to be explained by higher intelligence scores and better physical health among teenagers who had been breastfed. “Our results suggest that there are two important pathways through which breastfeeding may affect educational attainment -- through improvements in cognitive ability and health,” Joseph J. Sabia, one of the

researchers on the work, told Reuters Health. “In fact, we find that approximately half of the effect of breastfeeding on high school grades can be explained by these factors,” said Sabia, a professor of public policy at American University in Washington, D.C. However, he added, this study is “just a start,” and more research is needed to confirm that breastfeeding itself does in fact benefit children’s school performance. Researchers speculate that if breastfeeding does boost later intelligence, it is likely related to particular fatty acids found in breast milk that aid brain and nervous system development. In general, experts recommend that infants ideally be breastfed for at least the first year of life, with breast milk as the sole food for the first 6 months. Sabia said he thinks parents should consider the possible impact on school achievement when making breastfeeding decisions. SOURCE: Journal of Human Capital, June 11, 2009.

Almost 1 in 5 Australians suffer from chronic pain* and 64% of prescribed medication is inadequate at times*. Pain medication is for temporary relief so we can ‘get through the day’. Your quality of life is lacking if you need to take pain medication every day to ensure you can function. We all experience pain at some stage, whether it’s a headache, joint pain, sporting injury or internal infection. Our management of this pain is to mask the symptoms so we can continue to work – simple, reliable and effective. However, when the pain continues over a period of months, this becomes classed as ‘chronic pain’. Common chronic pain conditions are migraines, re-occurring headaches, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, joint pain, and back pain to name a few. These can be genetic, lifestyle induced or accidental. A chronic condition becoming more prevalent is ‘Fibromyalgia’. Symptoms of fibromyalgia include, muscle pain and joint pain along with fatigue, irritability, restlessness, brain fogginess, anxiety and worry. In extreme situations, someone with fibromyalgia cannot lift their arms above their heads, the pain and exhaustion is severe. But this can be slowly reversed. It is common belief that natural medicine is ‘gentler’ and thus not considered in chronic pain management. Yes, it is gentler, but equally, if not more, effective. Even modern medication is a derivative of herbal medicine. Such as Aspirin, as it is a synthetic (test-tube created) form of a well used herb, Willow Bark, yet the herb contains no side effects.

Scientists kill cancer cells with “Trojan horse” By Michael Perry

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian scientists have developed a “Trojan horse” therapy to combat cancer, using a bacterially derived nano cell to penetrate and disarm the cancer cell before a second nano cell kills it with chemotherapy drugs. The “Trojan horse” therapy has the potential to directly target cancer cells with chemotherapy, rather than the current treatment that sees chemotherapy drugs injected into a cancer patient and attacking both cancer and healthy cells. Sydney scientists Dr Jennifer MacDiarmid and Dr Himanshu Brahmbhatt, who formed EnGenelC Pty Ltd in 2001, said they had achieved 100 percent survival in mice with human cancer cells by using the “Trojan horse” therapy in the past two years. The scientists plan to start human clinical trials in the coming months.

Human trials of the cell delivery system will start next week at the Peter MacCullum Cancer Center at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and The Austin at the University of Melbourne. The therapy, published in the latest Nature Biotechnology journal, sees mini-cells called EDVs (EnGenelC Delivery Vehicle) attach and enter the cancer cell. The first wave of mini-cells release ribonucleic acid molecules, called siRNA, which switch off the production of proteins that make the cancer cell resistant to chemotherapy. A second wave of EDV cells is then accepted by the cancer cell and releases chemotherapy drugs, killing the cancer cell. “The beauty is that our EDVs operate like ‘Trojan horses. They arrive at the gates of the affected cells and are always allowed in,” said MacDiarmid. “We are playing the rogue cells at their own game. They switch-on the gene to produce the protein to resist drugs, and we are switching-off the gene which, in turn, enables the drugs to enter.”

DISARMING TUMOUR CELLS RNA interference, or RNAi, is designed to silence genes responsible for producing disease-causing proteins and is one of the hottest areas of biotechnology research. RNA was the basis of the 2006 Nobel Prize in medicine. Dozens of biotechnology companies are looking for ways to manipulate RNA to block genes that produce diseasecausing proteins involved in cancer, blindness or AIDS. Brahmbhatt said that after treatment with conventional drug therapy, a large number of cancer cells die but a small percentage of the cells can produce proteins that make cancer cells resistant to chemotherapeutic drugs. “Consequently, follow-up drug treatments can fail. The tumors thus become untreatable and continue to flourish, ultimately killing the patient,” said Brahmbhatt. “We want to be part of moving toward a time when cancers can be managed as a chronic disease rather than being regarded as a death sentence,” he said. The Nature report said the minicells were “well tolerated with no adverse side effects or deaths in any of the actively treated animals, despite repeated dosing.” “Significantly, our methodology does not damage the normal cells and is applicable to a wide spectrum of solid cancer types,” said MacDiarmid. “The hope is that the benign nature of this EDV technology should enable cancer sufferers to get on with their lives and operate normally using outpatient therapy.”

UFC 100 doesn’t disappoint after massive anticipation! needed to “shut Bisping up”, a notorious big mouth In the main bout, Brock Lesnar defeated Frank Mir by TKO in the second round. Brock Lesnar silenced nearly 18 months of derisive talk about his submission loss to Frank Mir by using his face like he was kneading pizza dough; his orangutan arms battering like pistons. Lesnar, who is a massive man in a sport that almost humours size, is keeping a promise made by Mark Coleman back in 1996 -- that if you’re athletic, and you can wrestle, you’ve got a career in MMA. If his destruction of Mir indicates he’s getting comfortable in the Octagon, expect the UFC to hire a staff reconstructive facial ..... surgeon. Considering that tickets for-Lesnar’s appearances sell faster than they can be printed, they can certainly afford it.

UFC 100, the 100th edition of the popular Ultimate Fighting Championship series, was held on July 11, 2009, in Las Vegas. UFC 100, which played to unprecedented media coverage and perhaps over a million households, proves that MMA (mixed martial arts) is cementing its place in modem fight culture. Two headlining fights provided action disciples of the sport will talk about for months! Dan Henderson took on Michael Bisping and was definitely the superior fighter on the night; Henderson seemed to be on another fighting level altogether. In the second round of the middleweight UFC bout Henderson blasted Bisping in the face with a powerfully right hand that knocked Bisping out, leaving him lying there motionless! Then, Henderson launched into the air and slammed his forearm into Bisping face just as the bell went; it was that final blow that knocked Bisping out cold. Referee Mario Yamasaki then had to get in the middle to stop the fight. Henderson said he thought the extra punch was

feel bloated and sick? Or maybe you pay attention when there is a change to your bowel habits, like alternating diarrhoea and constipation? If you answer yes to any of the above questions it is time to support your digestive system and one of the easiest and most beneficial ways is by using a probiotic. Did you know that there are over 400 different species of good bacteria in your digestive tract and they can weight up to 3kg? It is thus vital to ensure there is good balance between the good and the bad bacteria. It is the good bacteria’s job to protect us from all the harmful pathogens we are exposed to from the environment and the foods that we consume. An imbalance of these bacteria can result in symptoms such as the following:

Ripple Managing Director, Alison Shaw, travels the world to bring back rare styles of massage and beauty techniques that are not found anywhere else in Australia offering Brisbane Day Spa lovers the opportunity to experience unique and exclusive day spa treatment such as Ripple’s latest addition, which I was spoilt with, the Chocolate Massage. Alison’s inspiration to create this massage happened after discovering the technique in a small day spa in Barcelona, Spain. “Although I could not converse with my Spanish therapist, I did recognise the word ‘chocolate’ on the menu, and I was able to adapt the technique used that day in Barcelona to provide our clients in Australia with a truly decadent massage experience, infused with the rich sense of chocolate,” said Ms Shaw. If all this doesn’t sound decedent enough Ripple also give you deluxe chocolates to munch on while you’re being pampered. Let me tell you – it is absolute bliss! If this is making you realise how much you need to be rejuvenated jump on the Ripple website www. ripplemassage.com.au to decide on a treatment that will tantalise your senses.

Heavy drinking may boost prostate cancer risk NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Men who drink heavily may be raising their risk of developing prostate cancer, researchers reported Monday. What’s more, their study found, the drug finasteride, which can help lower a man’s risk of the disease, appears unable to undo the damage of heavy drinking. The findings come from a clinical trial of nearly 11,000 men looking at whether finasteride lowered the risk of prostate cancer over seven years. Of the men, 2,219 were diagnosed with prostate cancer, and 8,791 remained cancer-free throughout the study. The researchers found that men who drank heavily -- four or more drinks per day, on at least five days out of the week -- were twice as likely as nondrinkers to develop aggressive prostate tumors. The risk was seen in both men who received finasteride and those given a placebo. In addition, when it came to less aggressive, slower-growing prostate tumors, finasteride cut non-drinkers’ and moderate drinkers’ risk by 43 percent. The drug did nothing, however, for heavier drinkers. Researchers led by Dr. Zhihong Gong, of the University of California at San Francisco, report the findings in the journal Cancer. Many of the established risk factors for prostate cancer cannot be controlled, such as older age, African-American race and family history of the disease. Only a handful of suspected risk factors -- including obesity, smoking and a high intake of animal fat -- can be modified, Gong’s team notes. Heavy drinking may need to be added to that short list, the researchers say, though they also point out that more studies should be done to confirm the findings. For now, they write, “physicians may choose to consider this finding when counseling men on reducing their risk of prostate cancer.” It would also be “prudent,” they add, for men on finasteride to limit themselves to no more than two or three drinks per day.

Did You Say Eat Fats? So you were told many times that fats were the bad guys? Well, not anymore! After decades of trying to avoid fats, good nutrition advice now recommends fats to maintain mental and physical health. Yep, that’s right! Fats are essential to our health, and we should, in fact, eat more of them… Fats should make up between twenty-five to thirty percent of your diet; or if you are trying to lose weight, around fifteen to twenty percent. But before you reach for that next muffin or cheese melt, be warned: There are good and bad fats. Good fats provide powerful health benefits, improve brain function, and keep you looking and feeling young, happy and vital. Bad fats not only pack on the kilos; they can kill you. Fats That Make You Happy and Beautiful Ok, then… There are fats that keep your cell membranes and your hormones working in perfect order, and I mean, all your cells: your skin and arteries, your eyes and brain, your gut and liver… You can get the kinds of fats your body needs from olive oil, avocados, nuts and fish. These wonder foods are rich in essential fatty acids, especially omega 3 fatty acids, and they’re part of a traditional Mediterranean diet. Scientists have been touting the benefits of these foods since they first discovered that the Mediterranean diet protects the heart, and the benefits just keep on coming. Research now shows that fish oil even reduces the risk of cardiac disease in patients who are still rehabilitating. Fish oil and olive oil found in good fats also inhibit the development of colorectal cancers! The nourishing functions of omega-3 fats also strengthen the tissues that make up much of your skin, digestive, cardiac and respiratory systems and nervous system. In fact, the healing, anti-inflammatory action of omega-3 fats is known to protect against and help relieve asthma, rheumatism and other conditions as well as depression and autism, and helps keep your immune system healthy. According to international expert Mary Enig PhD, saturated fats have been framed as the ‘bad guys’ of the fat world. The truth is our bodies need some saturated fats. Saturated fats, explains Dr. Enig, help to prevent stroke, protect against kidney disease and asthma, and are essential for the health of our cells, including brain cells. The problem is that most of the saturated fats we get in store-bought dairy and meat come from animals that have been drugged, raised on polluted land, and stuffed with chemically treated or genetically modified grains. Fats from healthy, organically raised animals are another thing altogether, as they have higher percentages of unsaturated fats in them, as well as healthy saturated fats. You can also get excellent quality saturated fats from coconut oil. In its natural form or fermented, this fabulous oil contains lauric acid, a powerful antimicrobial,

By Valeria Astorga, PhD Renew You Centre for Wellbeing and Longevity

antifungal and antiviral, and also provides essential fatty acids to keep your tissues and skin healthy. Use it inside and out! Fats That Make You Old, Fat and Depressed Keep away of most saturated fats and the following new-fangled fats: • All oils that have been hydrogenated (hydrogen added), including trans fats (present in manufactured cookies, cakes, breads and pastry, and some spreads) Soy, corn and safflower oils • • Cottonseed oil • Canola oil • All fats heated to very high temperatures in processing and cooking (Yes, those in your Sunday BBQ) These fats glug up your arteries with cholesterol and fatty deposits, and clog up your body systems. They’re the fats that just love to settle in your thighs, buttocks and around your middle. Even worse, they can cause cancer, heart disease, sterility, learning disabilities, immune dysfunction and osteoporosis. The worst of all bad fats are man-made trans fats. Processed and junk foods and store bought baked goods (including those choc-chip cookies) are loaded with them. Eat them and you might as well be pouring glue into your body. Artificial trans fats have no nutritional benefit, and make it impossible to lose weight no matter how much you diet. The Right Balance It’s easier than you think to get the fats you need, and avoid harmful fats. Your body was not designed to process polyunsaturated vegetable oils and trans fats, so your body sees them as toxins. Instead, eat whole, real, minimally processed foods, and you will get the right balance of the fats you need: avocadoes, seeds and nuts and oily fish are a good start. Your cells will be well nourished so you’ll feel less hungry, and you’ll look and feel healthier, balanced, younger and more beautiful.

collect all those wrappers.” The competition is part of council’s comprehensive waste education program aimed to raise awareness about the importance of recycling. Schools were asked to create “disco balls” from recycled Easter chocolate wrappings and were judged on weight, size and presentation. Eatons Hill State School, Living Faith Lutheran School, Dayboro State School, Kurwongbah State School, Clontarf Beach State School were presented with trophies for their balls while Samford State School, Hercules Rd State School, Kallangur State School and Christ The King Catholic Primary School received compost bins to acknowledge their entries. Certificates were awarded to other participating schools which were Strathpine West State School, Beachmere State School, Jinibara State School, Albany Creek State School and Bray Park State School. Cr Sutherland said he hoped the schools involved would continue their recycling efforts. “This just goes to show, that every bit counts and when individual efforts are collected, they can be seen to make a real difference,” he said. Cr Sutherland said the collected foil could be recycled to make soft drink cans, ladders, door frames and even car parts.

Got a Story to Tell

Moreton Bay region schools have collected a whopping 52.94 kilograms of Easter egg foil, but Dakabin State School are the champion recyclers. The school’s colourful effort won it $1,000 in Moreton Bay Regional Council and Thiess Services’ Easter egg foil “disco ball” competition. Students at Dakabin created a ball that is 65 centimetres high and weighs 4.94 kilograms to claim the first prize, provided by Thiess Services. Mayor Allan Sutherland congratulated all participating schools during a ceremony at the Thiess Materials Recovery Facility in Petrie on World Environment Day, June 5. “This is a terrific effort by Dakabin and in fact all schools entering have shown an impressive dedication to the recycling cause by collecting a total of 52.94 kilograms of foil,” he said. “I wouldn’t want to think about just how much chocolate was eaten to

Only when you take the time to CONNECT with YOU will all the key areas of your life have the chance to prosper. Who doesn’t feel like their lives are moving faster; that their days all roll into one with little time to sit, relax and enjoy? When you have less time for yourself, it can soon have a detrimental influence not only on your health, your work, but on the people you love. It is important to integrate some self-care for more enjoyment at work, with family, friends and socially with increased health, vitality and fun!! Having a clear distinction between self-care, selfish and selfless is paramount for a healthy balanced and conscious existence. Distinguishing between selfcare, selfish and selfless can at times be a fine line. When you are real about your intentions around the choices you make, you can then clearly define and recognize the differences and ways to live with more success on every level. What is ‘selfish’? Selfish acts are often fuelled by a somewhat narcissistic “me first” attitude without caring about others. Selfish can be referred to as the lowest level of self-care. For example; if you value connection through communication, sharing, warmth, understanding and compassion, and in turn act in a way which shows very little regard for the people around you, then it’s highly likely a selfish attitude is present. If you choose to dishonour your value of connection then the opposite happens and all of a sudden there is disconnection in your life. As a result we are out of integrity and may wonder why we feel so alone and lacking the connection we seek. What is ‘selfless’? Selflessness is to give, give, give and give! A selfless person often puts others needs and wants ahead of their own. People who are super giving often end up exhausted, fatigued, with little time for themselves. The word ‘NO’ is rarely used and there is normally a lot of guilt and fear associated with saying ‘no’. They place a lot of their personal value on ‘giving’ with very little receiving. Often being ‘good’ is more important than being realistic and looking after one’s self. What is ‘self-care’ ? Self-care is making decisions in your life that supports what is important to you and your overall life vision. Without knowing what you need and value makes it hard to make decisions that creates more happiness and enjoyment. Self-care can be seen as selfish to some, or extremely generous and kind (selfless), depending on which need or value you are satisfying. Self-care involves taking others into consideration, treating colleagues, co-workers, family and friends, etc. with respect, however it is only natural in life that you cannot make everyone happy all the time. There comes a time when self-preservation is the only way. Conscious discernment is crucial!

What does this all mean? You now have an idea of what each kind of behaviour looks like. Where do you spend most of your time? Are you selfless, selfish or honouring yourself and the important areas of your life with self-care? Getting a good hold on this, and then making progressive changes in your life may be the difference between living with energy, joy and balance vs struggling with exhaustion and dissatisfaction! I can’t stress enough how important it is to live in a way that supports the essence of you. As a personal coach, time and time again this is where most of my clients get stuck in the workplace and at home. Where do I start? Getting to know yourself and being honest is a great place to start... 1) Are you happy? 2) Is your life the way you imagined it? 3) Do you enjoy your life as a whole? 4) Do you feel fulfilled and connected to life? 5) Do you feel in harmony or are you battling? 6) What are your core needs, and are they being met? 7) What are your core values, and do you live by them? 8) Have you created some personal and/or business boundaries? 9) Have you put in place positive goals, and are you achieving what you set out to achieve? 10) Are you living YOUR ideal life or a ‘should’ life - someone else’s idea of how you should live? 11) How are your energy levels? If you are fatigued, stressed and lacking enthusiasm there is normally something out of balance or out of integrity. Daily we are presented with multiple choices to be made – Do I go for a walk or stay in bed and extra 45 minutes, at lunch do I take some time out or do I stay in the office and chat with my colleagues, do I make an effort to spend time with my children or do I get caught up doing other ‘stuff’’? What choices are you making daily that creates self-care and enhances your life? Action + Integrity + Grace = Self-care When you act with self-care you have clarity around your choices. You act with personal power, you are mindful and graceful, and know how to express yourself in a way that builds a strong relationship with yourself and others. CONNECT with YOU! Government’s stimulus plan to slash your energy bills The Australian Government has released details of its $4 billion Energy Efficient Homes Package. The package, which will install ceiling insulation into 2.9 million homes, will help millions of Australian’s reduce their energy use, create much needed jobs and cut power bills in these homes by $200 - $700 per year, making this program great news for the economy and the environment. Local company, Select Building Services, who specialise in installing ceiling insulation recommend all homeowners who do not currently have insulation take advantage of this incentive program. Creating jobs in the midst of an economic downturn can of course be applauded but the underlying environmental and health benefits of this program cannot be ignored. Insulating these households will drastically reduce their carbon footprint, cutting energy waste. Insulation also reduces condensation on walls and ceilings leading to improved health for the residents of these homes, especially children. Nick added, “Our product is the only accepted insulation partner of the National Asthma Council of Australia and it’s produced from up to 80% recycled glass helping to save energy in its manufacture and to reduce landfill” The assistance is specifically targeted at the 40 percent of Australian homes currently estimated to not have insulation. For most households, insulation is the simplest and most effective way to make a house more energy efficient, keeping it cooler in summer and warmer in winter. One local homeowner, Dean Spicer of Brendale, took advantage of the rebate and contracted Select Building Services to insulate his ceiling. Dean said “When we heard that we were entitled to the rebate it seemed obvious to go ahead. We contacted Select Building Services and they organised the whole thing. We had no out of pocket expense at all, they came when they said they would and left no mess, we were very happy. The whole job took just three hours.” We asked Dean if he had felt any difference in the comfort levels of his home, he said “The nights haven’t been as cold but we thought maybe the weather was milder but friends have mentioned how cold it has been in their houses so I guess our insulation is doing its job as we haven’t been cold at home!” The Homeowner Insulation Program runs from 1 July 2009 until 31 December 2011 and as the average cost of insulating a home is $1,200 not too many households will be out of pocket after the $1,600 rebate. Call Select Building Systems today on 33001811 for a FREE consultation and to check your eligibility for the scheme.

Overweight Australians statistics hit record high If you have a weight problem, like 66% of Australian adults and 23% of our children according to the Governments Institute of Health and Wellbeing website, it can seem like a nearly impossible journey back to good health. In most cases the weight has crept on slowly and then one day you glance at your reflection in a window or see a photograph of yourself and think, how did this happen to me? Well, one local business owner who has fought the weight demon and won wants to help others win their own battles.

According to the Institute people gain weight for many reasons, lack of exercise, bad nutrition choices, self-esteem issues, genetic factors. The one consistent factor is that being overweight dramatically increases your risk of cardiovascular disease, type 11 diabetes, sleep apnoea, osteoarthritis and fertility problems in women. Understanding Your Health & What Makes You Tick Have you ever wondered how the average Australian adult has become a health statistic? It isn’t always as obvious as “convenience” food, our rapid pace and “no time for anything” lifestyle as well as an obsession with technology has conspired to create a trance of disempowerment from fresh air and exercise. So how do we break free from all of this? Last year Shirley Farrell from Start Me Up, a weight management consultancy and coaching service came across methods and techniques that could hold the answer. We caught up with Shirley recently about a Weight Loss Clinic being held in Albany Creek to find out more about how people can get access to these techniques. Q. A “clinic” sounds like a place that people go for treatment, what can people expect? A. That’s a good point and people who attend can certainly expect to get straight into using a few methods that will give them strategies and the ability to achieve what I call “thin thinking” because when you believe that something is truly achievable, the possibilities become very real. Q. Do you see this as treatment then, in terms of being a clinic? A. You know, I prefer to think of it as empowering rather than treating. Treating people makes it sound like some kind of illness and while being overweight for some can cause illness, it’s more about taking responsibility. I know that this term is a little overdone but it is the “holistic” thing. There’s a whole science now around the mind body connection that is not thoroughly understood. I happen to think that it’s time we started using it to our advantage. Through the supportive environment of coaching, nutritional education and exercise, embracing a healthy lifestyle that has you looking and feeling great becomes a new habit that is difficult to give up. If anyone is serious about making permanent changes to their health and wellbeing then they should come along to get generous discounts toward getting started on a Start Me Up plan which I will cover at the clinic.

Q. What made you decide to hold an event like this, for example what is it about Albany Creek – do we need it more that other places? A. Start Me Up was created thanks to the journey I went through when I made a decision to change my health and lifestyle and lose weight, I live in Albany Creek and it appeared obvious to me to apply them in this area when I discovered these techniques because they work by allowing people to make rapid change on areas that in the past may have seemed impossible. Also, it is kind of selfish on my part because I get great satisfaction from helping people and it seemed a logical first step to introduce Start Me Up locally. Q. Is the Clinic for men and women? A. Absolutely; it is for both men and women, in fact its because there are more men than women in Australia who are overweight that I encourage men to come along. And ladies please bring your friends, male or female. Everyone is welcome. Q. So, what will people get from the clinic that can be started straight away toward weight loss? A. It’s important to understand that taking responsibility for using any technique, tool or method of “self help” is a key to success. This, in my opinion is the greatest gap between success and failure. You can’t make an adult do anything until a personal decision has been made to change. If the 8th of August sounds like it could be that day, then you will leave with the belief that you can change your body and mind even if you have tried before without success. Not only that, you will set a personal goal that is so attractive and tangible that your subconscious draws you to it. When you think about the power of the subconscious which holds some of the keys to keeping us alive, then you can begin to know the potential for these techniques. To book a place for Shirley’s FREE Clinic held on the 8th of August go to www.startmeup.net.au and click on events

Winter Nutrition By Rita DiBartolo

When we think of winter food our minds conjure up images of thick vegetable soups and steaming stews. Funny enough these are exactly the type of food you should be eating at this time of year. In these colder weather we need more warmth from our food and this is provided by these types of meals where everything is cooked in one pan so no nutrients are lost and warming spices are added to increase the metabolic rate and send heat round the body.

Water We tend to forgot about water in the colder months but keeping your body and brain hydrated is probably one of the most important things that you can do for your health. Two thirds of the body is made up of water, so keeping a regular intake allows all bodily functions to occur correctly.

Five Best Winter Foods Barley This ancient grain is a great source of plant protein, B vitamins and fiber both soluble (which reduces cholesterol) and insoluble (which keeps sluggish winter bodies regular). Barley also has antiviral and anticancer properties and contains disease-fighting antioxidants. Ginger Ginger has a lot of heat, which makes it quite soothing in wintertime. That spicy warmth you feel when you eat this root is believed to stimulate circulation and ease congestion in the throat and lungs. And this flavorful herb has long been heralded for its tummy-soothing properties Garlic Garlic is another good vegetable to eat at this time of year as it has proven anti-viral and anti-fungal properties and could just help you fight off that cold. Winter Squash Winter squash is a wonderful source of vitamin A, C, potassium, folic acid and thiamin. Thiamin is an essential part of the digestion of carbohydrates and fats. Potassium is an important mineral in the formation of muscular tissue and also assists in the elimination of blood impurities via the kidney.

bottom Cleaning out the kitchen drawer By Kay Marco Everybody has one (well except our first house, but that’s another story), and most people use it for exactly the same thing – junk. The bottom drawer in the kitchen is the place that holds the takeaway menus, photo’s that come in the mail, pens, instruction manuals, batteries, recipes torn out from magazines, birthday candles and rubber bands are just some of the hundreds of things that hide in there. So let’s talk about how to tidy it up. 1. Takeaways menus – grab a plastic sleeved folder and place all of your menus in there. They’ll always be in the same place when you go looking for them & when an update copy arrives you can pull out the old and replace with the new. 2. Photos – put them in a photo album, frame, on the fridge, or throw them out.

3. Pens – put them in a pencil case or in the desk drawer (keep one on top of the fridge so you will always have one handy) 4. Instruction manuals – File them all together in a manila wallet and store with the rest of your important documents 5. Batteries – if they are flat, throw them out if not, store them together in a ziplock bag. 6. Recipes – use a plastic sleeved folder and put them all in there. Place the ones that you use more often at the front and then rotate as necessary. 7. Birthday Candles & Rubber Bands – A trusty ziplock bag will work for both of these Within about half an hour your drawer should be looking a lot more organised than it did when you started. Feel & look your best in the cooler months

By Phillipa Hogg

While it is blowing a gale outside and snuggling up in front of a DVD feels like the best thing to do its easy to let our body care regime slip now is actually the best time to get your body back in check before bikini season. As your skin is much dryer during the cooler months the easiest way to smooth and hydrate is to exfoliate. The best way to do this is in a warm shower with an exfoliating glove; the warm water will soften skin which makes exfoliation easy and the convenient glove makes it simple and easy. After a warm shower lather on a gradual tanning moisturiser. Not only will this hydrate but will also provide a lovely natural glow making you look and feel luminous. You don’t have to surrender your beautiful brown body over winter use the alternative and if done correctly will have you looking fresher than you have all year.

The pill may impair muscle gains in young women By Megan Rauscher NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Young women who use oral contraceptives (OC) may not get as much out of their weight-lifting routine as women who are not on the pill, according to a study released today, which suggests that OC use impairs muscle gains from resistance exercise training in women. “The factors that explain the differences in the magnitude of the responses to resistance exercise training between individuals are largely unknown,” Chang-Woock Lee, from Texas A&M University in College Station, told Reuters Health. “The present study is meaningful in that we have identified a potential new factor that may be independently associated with the characteristics and variability of muscle responses to a controlled resistance exercise training program,” the researcher added. In the study, 73 generally healthy women between 18 and 31 years old participated in whole-body resistance exercises three times per week for 10 weeks. Thirty-four of the women used oral contraceptives and 39 did not. The women were encouraged to eat enough protein to promote muscle growth. According to the researchers, there were marked differences in lean muscle mass gains between the two groups. Lean muscle increased by just 2.1 percent in OC users compared with 3.5 percent in non-OC users. Lee and colleagues presented their findings Friday at the American Physiological Society meeting, part of the Experimental Biology 2009 scientific conference underway in New Orleans. In a prepared statement from the meeting, the researchers acknowledge being “surprised at the magnitude of differences in muscle gains between the two groups, with the non-OC women gaining more than 60 percent greater muscle mass than their OC counterpart.” Other muscle responses, such as strength gains and arm/leg circumferences, were similar between the OC and non-OC users. Tests on the women also showed that blood levels of three musclebuilding hormones were significantly lower and one muscle-breaking hormone was significantly higher in OC users than non-OC users, Lee said. These findings “could help explain” why OC users showed diminished muscle gains from resistance exercise training. Summing up, Lee said: “Numerous health and performance benefits including improved exercise/athletic performance, body composition, esthetic beauty, and self-image can be attained from the increased muscle mass and strength associated with resistance exercise training. OC users may not be able to fully enjoy those benefits while experiencing impaired exercise performance and difficulties achieving athletic goals due to diminished muscle responses they get from resistance exercise training.”

Actress Mischa Barton on “psych hold” in L.A LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actress Mischa Barton, whose career cooled following her exit from the hit television show “The O.C.,” has been hospitalized in Los Angeles for psychiatric observation, a news report said on Thursday. Barton, 23, was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Wednesday, after police placed her under an involuntary psychiatric hold, the TV gossip show “Access Hollywood” said. Barton’s spokesman said the actress was “safely transferred to medical treatment for which she remains hospitalized, as per the recommendation of her doctor.” He declined further comment. “Access Hollywood” quoted an unidentified source as saying Barton was placed under Section 5150 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code by police and transported to Cedars-Sinai. Pop star Britney Spears was also placed on a 5150 hold twice in 2008 during her highly public meltdown. The London-born, New York-raised actress made her breakthrough in the teen soap “The O.C.,” playing a troubled, bicurious socialite. But her character was killed off at the end of the third season in 2006, and the show was canceled the following year. The actress has appeared in a strong of low-profile features since then. Last year, she pleaded no contest to drunken driving in Los Angeles and was sentenced to three years probation. In 2007, she was briefly hospitalized for what a spokesperson described as a bad reaction to medication.

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20

Virgo Aug 23 - Sep 22

If you’ve had a desire to beautify your home, the period of the 16th to the 21st is the time to make the necessary arrangements to do so. Venus will bring with it an increased sense of colour, balance and harmony but your previously wayward view of furnishing and interior design is now somehow improved and your knack for creating an elegant home interior is bolstered making you an amateur interior designer, at least temporarily.

Taurus Apr 21 - May 20

Take some additional precautions with your health between the 8th and 13th. You need to be conscious of the fact that you may have intolerance to some foods or possibly even environments in which you are spending a lot of time and this could be the cause of your fuzzy head or generally low level of energy. Systematically study your diet and observe how this is affecting your moods and your physical state.

Libra Sep 23 - Oct 23

Up until the 11th there will be a mixture of financial and personal responsibilities overshadowing your sense of wellbeing. This will act as a background against the continuing combination of passionate Mars and Venus. You’ll be torn in many different directions and after the 12th some arguments over money could further cloud the issues that are really at the heart of any problem you’ll be dealing with.

Gemini May 21 - Jun 21 It may be time to relocate your work or if that’s not likely, to move sideways within your organisation to another department in which you may not feel altogether confident. Don’t let a negative attitude obstruct you from winning new friends and workplace alliances. Particularly after the 12th your energy will be helpful to both your and those with whom you collaborate.

Cancer Jun 22 - July 22 A slower pace is likely from the 12th when Mars enters the introverted zone of your horoscope. You may be seeking self-regeneration through connecting with your own inner self and feel perfectly fine about it, even if your friends don’t. Charitable work is likely in this phase and you may be inspired by a story you read or something you see on TV that causes you to help others who are less fortunate than yourself.

Some of your friends will leave you stone cold between the 20th and the 25th. They will be playing mind games with you and that’s not your cup of tea. You’ll be more interested in carving out a whole new niche of friendships. You may meet someone who is an unusual character and may be introduced by a third party or a blind date. This may be nerve wracking at first but you’ll possibly develop a long-term friendship with them.

Scorpio Oct 24 - Nov 21 A lunar eclipse takes place in your zone of communications this month and up until the 22nd you’ll have to postpone some of your usual pleasures in lieu of tightening up business and financial matters. You’ll need to be more forceful in demanding clarity from others. Someone will be trying to pull the wool over your eyes but this is only likely to happen if you’re not paying strict attention. Awareness is one of your key words this month.

Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21 Your hard work pays off this month between the 9th and the 15th you are likely to receive at least a pat on the back for persisting with a rather troublesome workload. You’re brilliant ideas and dedicated work will be recognized by higher-ups. Educational pursuits are spotlighted after the 23rd and if you’re sitting through exams or looking to improve your skill set in some way, the period after the 25th indicates even better success for you.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 A loved one’s health after the 8th may prove to be of concern to you. Carelessness, waste and indiscretion on their part may be the obvious causes of a health crisis. Whilst you may have endeavoured to advise them as best you can, you will understand that you have no control over what others do and you’ll simply have to act as an impartial spectator.

Aquarius Jan 20 - Feb 18 You may be impulsive for the sake of beautifying your home but you can make your place look great without spending a fortune. This will come to a head by the 7th when the lunar eclipse (in your zone of expenses) highlights this fact. A solar eclipse after the 22nd brings monetary lessons this month.

Pisces Feb 19 - Mar 20 Pay careful attention to domestic matters during the month of July. Mars and Venus create extremes within your family if you allow others to take the lead when you are in fact the best one capable of doing the job. Too many cooks spoil the broth, remember that. Although you have important business to attend to between the 3rd and the 6th, taking the lead in home affairs will be unavoidable throughout most of the month.

This Month

23 July - 22

August

Communications with a friend after the 19th are strained as they make their inquisitive nature powerfully felt.
