Happy Birthday Livit Health Club of Everton Park This could be considered a third edition to the editorials that I have already done at Livit Health Club. So to catch you up! At first I was going in blind, I had no idea what to expect nor what I was to write about. But I came out shocked (in a good way) to have witnessed such a caring, fun and personal environment that a gym, in today’s day and age have created. No pushy salesmen, no show ponies, just good people. Now I am told this environment certainly wasn’t just created by the Livit team but by the members too. Then upon my second visit to the club, I sort of knew what environment I was to expect, but once again I was shocked, this time with their new improved personal training programs and general member programs on offer. The club had truly achieved some fantastic results for members. By a mere 3 months after new years 09’ the trainers at the club had been responsible for the loss of well over 100kg for their clients, so once again Livit blew me away. This was a club that cared if their members came in or not and set up programs that wouldn’t let members slip just through the cracks. So I ventured to the club this time knowing what I was going to write about, knowing I could write a heartfelt article to reminisce as you would on a birthday, to reflect on how well it’s members have done, how well its passionate team have developed and to be honest I just genuinely like being in the place. But you wouldn’t believe it, they got me again. Twice the classes, twice the trainers, more equipment, double the size crèche’ with more hours, organizing new parking areas close by and the most amazing member “Results Wall” I have ever seen - located on the left as you walk up the entrance. I know I may sound a bit biased, but seriously guys the results for some of these members are life changing. A 23 year old losing 24 cm of his waist, a mother of 2 losing 28 kilos and trust me there is more, much much more. Well that’s enough from me anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIVIT! You guys are truly amazing so don’t change a thing.

The Sugar Sensitive Child By Skye Robinson (Local Expert)

Restless, disruptive, impulsive and poor concentration. These are key traits of a sugar sensitive child. A piece of birthday cake and they are literally running in circles or an iceblock turns your child from normal to overdrive. This is no fun for the parent and it may surprise you, but the child doesn’t like it either. Yes, they love the sweet treat but their behaviour becomes more than they can handle. Similar to the Hulk, ‘you won’t like me when I’m angry.’ As the hulk transforms despite his protests, the sugar sensitive child cannot control their actions when they eat sugar foods. This is a physical reaction not a mental choice to misbehave. A sugar sensitive child cannot keep sugar in the blood stream and use it at an even level over an extended period of time. Instead, all the sugar is absorbed at once; giving the incredible sugar high, and once that has worn off, the sugar high crashes and with it the child. Therefore, a sugar sensitive child has no happy medium of energy expenditure – it is either all or nothing. This is where the diet comes into play. It is possible that you could be contributing to this rollercoaster behaviour without knowing it. Common foods such as cornflakes, packaged snacks (eg, roll-up,

LCM or fruit sticks), poppers, white bread sandwich, yogurts, pasta bakes and ice cream, are all high in sugar. This doesn’t seem like a bad diet, however if you feed this food to a sugar sensitive child, you’ve fed him/her about 8 tablespoons of sugar a day, and their body is only half the size of an adult. Sugar isn’t the only culprit. Other offending foods are colourings, additives, preservatives and salicylates. These have a similar effect on the body and the behavioural consequences. However they can also contribute to skin rashes, headaches, stomach aches and pains and mouth ulcers. Discovering the individual foods that irritate your child could give your child a new lease on life, which is great parenting. This topic is discussed in more depth on Friday 27 November at my clinic in Eatons Hill between 10am-11am. For $15 you’ll receive an information pack full of relevant info, light refreshments, the opportunity to discuss this with a Naturopath and other parents in similar circumstances. It is a child-friendly environment, especially sugar-sensitive children welcome. For more info visit www.skyenaturopath.com or phone Skye on 0438 821 283. I’d love to see you there.

DECREASE YOUR STRESS Article by Merendi Leverett-Bowler Accredited Exercise Physiologist GradDipHSc(ExRehab), BHMSc, AEP, MAAESS Many people want to know how to decrease the amount of stress in their life! My only suggestion is quit your job and run to the hills! Yes, I know easier said then done! But I can give you 5 easy steps you can implement throughout your week to help you manage the current stressors in your life. 1. Take time out for yourself – Within today’s society we are often working long hours and spending most of our time pleasing others or doing things for others. Once a week or once a month take time out on your own or with a friend or partner to do something you enjoy. E.g. reading a book, a hot bath, a game of golf, lazy afternoon in the hammock reading the paper, a massage or beauty treatment (no waxing!) This timeout however long will help you recharge those batteries and any stress you thought was major, may now seem quite insignificant. 2. Play Music – As the old saying goes “music soothes the savage beast”. Try ‘relaxation’ music if you want to truly relax. Or choose your favourite style or band and turn it up loud when cleaning the house or having a shower/bath. Maybe you are one of those ‘closet’ singers – let you hair down when no one is around. Music allows you to escape the daily grind and most times music you enjoy, makes you feel better and of course this assists in decreasing those stress levels. “Classical” music is great for stimulating the brain, whilst ‘relaxation’ music helps to decrease stress. If you want try having a ‘roster’ so that everyone in the office gets the chance to have their preferred music style heard. Alternatively in my office, one of my staff puts earphones on and listens to her CDs via her computer. 3. Participate in Exercise &/or Physical Activity – yes the dreaded word! Everyone knows that exercise helps decrease stress by reducing cortisol (a stress hormone) and increase the good happy chemicals endorphins, which are responsible for making you feel happy. And when you feel happy and less stressed, you are more productive! So make sure you exercise at least 3 times a week. To encourage yourself to exercise wear a pedometer and see how many steps you can record each week and make a competition of it, and offer yourself a reward for reaching your goal. Or maybe join a sports team (if that is something that entices you). There are heaps of sporting competitions and local community fundraisers that involve exercise (fun runs, bike rides etc). Alternatively you could join us at Merendi Health & Wellness with many classes to choose from, we are sure to have something that suits you needs. start your own staff walking or exercise group before or after work. You and your staff could have someone come to the workplace to conduct fitness classes or personal training. The ideas are endless. Encouraging your staff to take part in some form of exercise is also good for building team morale. 4. Relaxation/Meditation – Yes very hippy like, but honestly it works. Whether it is attending a Yoga or Pilates class. After 1hr you feel so much more relaxed and or course the stress. Stretching helps relax your muscles and subsequently you. Why not try Meditation, some Yoga classes offer 15min meditation after the class or alternatively you may wish to attend a workshop that shows you many different ways to meditate. Meditation helps clear you mind and prepares you mentally to manage your stress. 5. Have Fun! – This is the most important of all. To reduce stress, why not be social. Whether it is meeting friends at a local café, hosting a BBQ or picnic, or just taking the kids to the park or beach. It does not have to be too flash. Remember not to work too much, especially if you run your own business. This is often the reason a lot of people suffer from high stress, as they don’t spend enough time enjoying life, as they should! Final word, if you or someone you know is starting to show real signs of stress, for e.g. increased lethargy, regular days off due to sickness or stress, increased occurrences of illness or reducing social interaction, it might be worthwhile to call our team of experts at Merendi to help you get to the root of the problem. We have many different services and programs that can assist in dealing with stress, decreasing incidence of illness and improving energy levels. Call us today on 1300 881 536 for a FREE no obligation health assessment to get yourself back on track to better health and wellness.

GET READY TO ROLL up to 500 calories an hour and it’s low impact too! It’s much easier on your joints, tendons, and ligaments than running, jogging, or aerobics and you’ll boost endorphins and soothe your spirits through the smooth, repeated motions of roller skating so, maybe we should be strapping on the skates and joining the kids while they do lap after lap of the roller rink! Plus roller skating is budget friendly, we spoke to Martin Surman, the owner of Skateaway in Albany Creek “all you really need is a good pair of skates, beginner’s skates start at around $70 and the appropriate safety gear. A helmet, knee and elbow pads and wrist guards are recommended to the beginning skater, since falls could, and usually do, happen!” Skating is a fun way to burn calories and lose weight, so go ahead and give it a try; you might even forget you’re getting a work out! Cardiovascular exercise has the stigma of being drudgery, not a fun activity, but, this is not always the case. Roller skating is a perfect example of a fun form of cardio exercise. Many of us can remember those days of skating for hours as kids. It wasn’t exercise, it was fun! Developing the habit of daily cardiovascular exercise is important for our kids and when the activity is fun, it becomes easier for them to form those habits. Kids are more likely to work out for longer periods of time when the activity is enjoyable and that makes skating perfect to get the kids off the couch and getting their heart rates up and pumping without them even realizing it! Roller skating is a great form of exercise for people of all ages to add to their regular physical activity program to add a bit of fun and diversity. Roller skating is a fabulous muscle toning activity and burns

Q & A with David Grey from Rams Home Loans

By Rebecca Kerta

Getting a mortgage is a daunting pursuit, whether it’s your first home loan or to buy your retirement house, it can be confusing and stressful. Some mortgage brokers pride themselves on getting you the best mortgage for your needs and providing excellent service throughout their dealings with you. One of these dedicated professionals is David Grey, Principal of RAMS Home Loans in Aspley. I caught up with him for a coffee and some great advice. RK: David, can you tell us about your career and what led you to your current role as owner of the Aspley RAMS franchise? DG: I have been in the finance industry for over 20 years; I started with Bank of New South Wales just as they changed to Westpac then after 3 years working with them I left to travel overseas for 3 years and get some life experience. When I returned from travelling I joined AGC where I worked in various roles for 17 years. When GE purchased AGC I remained with them for 2 years then decided it was time to move on. After years of giving small business people advice it was time to put the experience and knowledge I had acquired to the test! The RAMS opportunity was perfect, it was an industry I knew, had a strong brand name and presented a chance to build the business over time based on our efforts and customer relationships, not what others did. RK: Buying a home is one of the biggest investments people will make in their lifetime, with your knowledge and expertise in the industry what piece of advice would you offer home buyers? DG: Plan ahead to work out what you can afford to pay back each month and still have the lifestyle you want. This involves completing a simple budget and getting a mortgage pre-approval in place. These things will help you stay focused on the right homes in the right price range and you can avoid a lot of heartache down the track if interest rates rise and your payments go above what you can afford. RK: How would you describe the culture of your business and it’s employees? DG: Our business prospers and grows based on one thing only, Service! We understand that if we do not provide great personal service and assistance from the start of our association with each client to the finish then that client will not come back to us and they will not

refer their friends and family. We build great rapport with each of our customers and they keep coming back and do refer new clients to us. We always provide excellent service and personal commitment to our clients. That is the culture of our business. RK: What have been some of the highlights of your career to date? DG: As the business has grown we have had customers come back to us again and again for different loans. They do this only because we are looking after them properly and that gives me a lot of personal satisfaction. I get great feedback from customers about my team and how they have made their dealings with us so pleasurable, which I love to hear, it means that we are providing the highest level of service, which is what we aim for every day with every client. RK: Where do you see yourself and your business in 5 years? DG: In 5 years we would like to have 4 offices open between Morayfield and Chermside with the team growing from the current 10 to 15 plus members. We aim to have over 2000 clients with both their personal home loans and investments looked after by us here at RAMS Aspley. RK: What does achieving Balance in life mean to you? DG: Whilst I work hard and there is an element of stress involved in running your own business, it is important to enjoy my time spent at work and then balance it with finding time to enjoy with my family and friends. Balance to me is making time to recharge the batteries by spending time with my wife and kids. David and his team can be contacted at RAMS Home Loans, Shop 9, 1344 Gympie Road, Aspley or call them on 38631155

Green tea linked to less stomach cancer in women NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - As if you needed another reason to drink green tea: Japanese women, but not Japanese men, who regularly drink 5 or more cups daily appear about 20 percent less likely to develop stomach cancer, study findings hint. Researchers have studied green tea in cancer prevention because they suspect that the drink’s antioxidants may protect against the deadly disease. In particular, it may include compounds that fight bacteria that have been linked to stomach cancer. However, previous studies were inconsistent, researchers write their report in the journal Gut. To get a better sense of green tea’s potential effects, Dr. M. Inoue, at the National Cancer Center in Tokyo, examined six older studies. Together, these studies involved more than 219,000 men and women 40 years and older, who were followed from about 7 years to more than 11 years. Overall, about four in five of the participants reported drinking green tea daily, with about a third drinking five or more cups per day. During follow-up, about 2500 of the approximately 100,000 men, and about 1000 of the more than 118,000 women in the studies developed stomach cancer. The researchers found no link between more tea drinking and reduced stomach cancer risk among men. The 20 percent reduced stomach cancer risk they saw among women drinking 5 or more, versus 1 or less, cups of green tea daily remained true even after the researchers took smoking into account. They note, however, that the decreased risk only applied to cancers in certain parts of the stomach. While the study does not prove a cause-effect relationship, the authors suggest more research to figure out whether drinking green tea actually decreases the risk of stomach cancer, or whether women with a lower risk only happen to drink more of it.

Postural Alignment & Patterns of Movement Have you ever recognized a friend or someone you know while they were still a long way off, or from behind? It is not their face that you see, but their posture and body movement that you recognise. It is the way they move and hold themselves. Each of us has distinct patterns of movement and habitual postures that others can identify, even from a distance. These patterns and postures have developed over time and are influenced by physical factors such as height, weight, body proportion, shape, muscle size and psychological factors. Depression, low confidence and self esteem or feeling self conscious can often result in slouched posture and slower movements. Our posture is also shaped by habitual or repetitive work tasks, eg. a pre-school teach is frequently bent over with the head gliding forward to talk, resulting in poked neck and rounded upper back posture. Typists and taxi drivers can develop tense elevated shoulders from holding there arms out in front of them for long periods. Mothers carrying a child on one hip may develop uneven muscle tension on one side of the spine. For optimal well-being try and keep your movements smooth and symmetrical and your posture in good alignment – chin in, shoulders down and slightly back, chest lifted, tummy in, and bottom slightly tucked under. Your spine should feel light and tall. Lift the back of the head up out of the back of the neck towards the ceiling, so that your neck is long. Each foot makes contact with the ground in the form of a tripod, with weight taken under the ball of the big toe, the ball of the little toe, and under the heel. In this way, the arches of the feet are raised and ready poised to support the body’s weight. This sets off a chain

reaction which rolls the legs out slightly from the hips and corrects the pelvic alignment. Imagine the pelvis is like a wide swallow bowl of water. Try to keep the water level even, so that it doesn’t spill out forwards, backwards or sideways as you stand, walk and run. Your pelvis is the centre and should be kept strong and stabilised by drawing in deep (core) abdominal muscles. Those muscles then provide a stable base from which the other muscles of the body can work to produce smooth, steady movement. Strains and injuries are avoided when our movements are smooth, co-ordinated, centred and controlled. Our movements should be performed in a flowing manner with precision and purpose, not in a sloppy random fashion, in order to minimize the shocks and jolts on the body’s joints and discs. Try to “set” the bodies stabilising muscles first (primarily chin in, shoulders down, tummy in and bottom slightly under) before commencing any movement, and then hold this steady during movement. The result should look and feel graceful, comfortable and secure. Try it for some Movement Improvement! It will get easier with practice! Till next time

WIN YOUR REAL BODY To commemorate the release of two books by International Body Transformation Specialist, Sonja Falvo, ‘The Real Body Plan’ & ‘The Real Body Real Food Plan’ Balanced and Sonja would like to offer r readers the opportunity to win a prize pack containing both books and a 12 month membership to www.RealBodyClub.com; prize is valued at $515.90. The Real Body books reveal the staggering truth about why low calorie diets set people up to fail, and more importantly, providing an alternative solution. Rather than advocating starvation, giving up your favorite foods and exercise routines that are best left to elite athletes, The Real Body Plan and Real Body Real Food Plan utilize the latest scientific research to maximize weight-loss. The unique part of The Real Body Club membership site is that Sonja spent 18 months developing a meal planning software program to make eating healthier quick and easy; members can plan an entire weeks meals, recipes and shopping list in less than 15 minutes! Falvo knows only too well about the dangers of extreme dieting from personal experience; her weight obsession earlier in life led to a vicious cycle of yo-yo dieting. In 2003 a bike accident resulted in a crush fracture in her spine and she was then diagnosed with borderline osteoporosis, which she found out was caused by her 10 years of yo-yo dieting and severe calorie restriction. This incident is what fuelled Falvo’s passion to find a healthy lifestyle solution for weight-loss and weight maintenance and create the vision of becoming ‘The Global Leader in Healthy & Sustainable Weight-Loss’. “By following my simple and effective lifestyle plan people begin to see positive changes within their first week; they have more energy, their clothes feel looser, and they just feel better in themselves, more self confident.” Says Falvo The Real Body Plan offers readers a complete step by step guide on how to successfully transform their bodies and their lives through creating a positive mindset, healthy eating, and a sensible approach to exercise. The Real Body Real Food Plan offers readers a simple and effective meal planning strategy with over 130 quick, easy and mouthwatering recipes from around the globe. PARENTS SURVIVAL GUIDE TO SCHOOLIES By Bec Kerta

So your Schoolie is finally heading off for a well earned break? This is great for them but what about you? How are parents meant to prepare for an event that many will have us believe is a toxic mix of thousand of school leavers, alcohol bingeing, volatile behaviour and predatory “toolies”? We spoke to parents and teens to get their personal stories of schoolies week. We spoke with Carrie whose daughter went to schoolies week last year about her experience. “You’re letting her go to Schoolies?”, “I lost count of how many times I heard that question, but we evaluated the pro’s and cons of letting her go, had family discussions about the issues facing our teenager when Schoolies go to the Gold Coast. What it really came down to was that as her parents it was our job to make sure she had the skills and good judgement to deal with these issues. Most of these young people are turning 18 and if they have ever been out on a Saturday night have most likely experienced a fight and witnessed someone passed out because of drinking too much. They know what can go wrong because they have seen it before; educate them on the security of staying with a group of good friends and watching out for each other. School is behind these young adults, they will now carve their paths. This is a time when as parents we must realise and celebrate our children as adults”. Carrie’s daughter had a fantastic time at Schoolies and managed to avoid any serious incidents by following a few basic guidelines given by her parents. Getting the balance between allowing your kids the freedom to celebrate their hard work in year 12 and ensuring you mange to retain even a small piece of mind is a bit of a juggling act so here are some Schoolies Survival Tips to share with them; •

Make sure they are travelling with a good group of friends. If one member of the group gets into a risky situation they will be there to get them home safe.

Ask them to do a risk assessment of the area they are in, if the vibe is uneasy or dangerous then they should look for another venue to carry on their festivities.

A fight in a crowd is like a magnet; it draws everyone in to watch and then spills everywhere. Brawling is one of the biggest problems at schoolies week and we all know that just one punch can kill. Explain to your teens the advantages of walking off rather than taking the bait – an awesome trip to remember forever, not a week spent in I.C.U.

Predatory behaviour is prevalent at schoolies events so talk about safe sex practices and the importance of not getting caught in a isolated location with someone they don’t know, staying with their friends means staying safe.

Ensure your kids know that they can contact you at any time for whatever reason if they feel unsure or unsafe. Getting them to check in with you at regular intervals will also ensure you get some sleep!

Now we have educated our teens and armed them the best we can with advice we must trust them, trust that we have done our jobs at raising independent, decent young adults and they will appreciate that trust. On your teens return from schoolies maybe they will have some great stories to tell as did Luke who travelled to Surfers Paradise for Schoolies 2009. “Schoolies was something we had planned together as a group since Year 10. Surfers Paradise was our destination, the Schoolies Central of Australia. We were staying at a hotel right near the centre of the action. We had little sleep, going to bed really late along with getting up early so as not to miss any of the action! The whole time we felt really safe, due to the high security of at our hotel and the high police presence. The focus of our trip was Evolution, the schoolies-only drug and alcohol free dance party. It was an awesome night. We also did the theme parks, Dreamworld and Wet ‘n’ Wild. The beach was great place too; catching a few waves, kicking the footy. We met many other schoolies revellers. Living off junk food was the norm for us, as we only had shared cooking facilities, and quite frankly none of us has any cooking talent. Although, we did manage to get a decent feed at cafes a couple of nights. The day we left for home was quite sad, and we slept the whole way home. I’m glad I took the trip, despite my parents at first being against it. One of the best weeks of fun I’ve had in my life - a once in a lifetime.”

Obesity, alcohol, depression interlinked in women By Anne Harding NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Alcohol abuse, obesity and depression seem to go hand in hand for many women, according to the first study to look at how the three relate to one another over time in young adults. Dr. Carolyn A. McCarty of Seattle Children’s Research Institute and her colleagues also found that almost half of the men and women in their study suffered from at least one of these problems between the ages of 21 and 30. “That’s big,” McCarty told Reuters Health, and is likely only “the tip of the iceberg,” because she and her colleagues used fairly stringent definitions of alcohol abuse, depression and obesity in their study. The young men and women in the current study have been followed since 1985, when they were in fifth grade. McCarty and her team looked at data from interviews conducted when the study participants were 24, 27 and 30 years old to understand the interrelationships among depression, obesity and alcohol use disorders. At age 21, 8 percent of women and 12 percent of men had at least two of the three problems. Over time, having more than one of the problems became more common for women, but less so for men. For men, the only association the researchers saw was for obese 27-year-olds, who were less likely to be depressed at age 30. But women who were depressed at 27 were more

than three times as likely to meet criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence at age 30. Women who had alcohol use problems at 24 were nearly four times as likely to be obese at 27, while being obese at age 27 more than doubled the risk of depression at 30. And lower-income individuals of both sexes were at greater risk of depression and obesity. A tendency to “ruminative coping”-in which a person replays and obsesses about negative events-may be one of the traits that links alcohol abuse, obesity and depression, McCarty noted in an interview. Dr. Susan Nolen-Hoeksma, a psychologist at Yale, has referred to the three as a “toxic triangle” of “eating, drinking and overthinking,” the researcher added, and has shown that women-and men-who ruminate are more depressed and more likely to drink or to binge eat to cope with emotional problems. There are interventions that target all three legs of this toxic triangle, McCarty said, including physical exercise, mindfulness training, and stress management. Strategies for treating depression, alcohol use problems, and obesity-all of which are characterized by problems with the brain’s “reward system”--also need to help people find alternatives to rewarding themselves with food or alcohol, she added. “We have to think about how people can start to build in naturally rewarding experiences in their lives,” she said.

A LABOUR OF LOVE A new and exciting not-for-profit community arts association has formed in Queensland with a commitment to foster, support and promote artists from the Queensland labour movement, appropriately titled artslabour. The formation of artslabour was inspired by Michelle McJannett who first floated the idea of bringing together like-minded friends around this innovative endeavour. It is planned to take the joyful experience of seeing an art exhibition to the regional, rural and remote people of Queensland. Martin Galleries in Nundah Village will host the launch of artslabour’s first exhibition on Thursday 10th December with a night of art and music that will delight Brisbane’s art lovers. The first exhibition will include some of Queensland’s best loved artists, including furniture artisan Will Marx , David Hinchliffe, Cathy Bevis, Ray Marx, Pete Martin, Lucretia Suciu, Ian Grieve and Judy HallGrieve, Indigenous artist Arone Meeks and emerging artist Aleah Cullen. “This exhibition will be a treat for art lovers with a diversity of artistic styles, including pieces of Will’s extraordinarily beautiful furniture,” Michelle said. Further exhibitions are scheduled for the Valentine’s weekend next year, aptly titled “Artistic Labour of Love” and another to be held during the Brisbane Festival in September 2010. Guests at the launch of artslabour exhibition on Thursday 10 December at 7pm will have an opportunity to meet and talk directly to the artists about the artwork you are buying or bidding for at auction throughout the evening. We will be treated to live music while enjoying the exhibition. A bar will be available for drinks and cheese platters will be served. Martin Galleries is located in Aspinall Street in the heart of the Nundah Village precinct. Parking is available nearby and the Nundah Train Station is a short walk from the gallery. To attend this fabulous exhibition, please rsvp to artslabour@gobusinessau.com, call Michelle McJannett on 07 3325 3200 or the gallery on 3266 8450. Kids get pure treat with new water When it’s time to enrol our children into a swimming education program we take many criteria into account. The location of the school, size of the classes, recommendations from friends and acquaintances, but what about the water? Does the swim school you are looking into for your child have special water? When an email can upon my desk asking if I could meet up with Sally Dommett from Shapland Swim Schools it mentioned that I had to ask Sally about her “special water”. With my curiosity peaked I set off to meet with Sally and to spend one of the most enjoyable hours of my week at her swim school in Everton Park. Sally runs 3 of Shapland’s swim schools in North Brisbane, Everton Park, Warner and Kallangur and has been in the industry for 19 years. Sally’s dedication to her profession and her experience in the business ensures her schools meet all the criteria parents look for. Shapland Swim Schools are Swim Australia approved, have a low pupil to teacher ratio, heated dressing rooms and a separate viewing room for parents and siblings. I was already impressed with Sally’s obvious love for her job and the efficiency of her operation but the big question still remained, why is her water so special? With a laugh Sally explained “Working as a swim instructor I obviously spend a lot of time in the water, as does my staff. Over the years I have lost some amazing instructors due to skin conditions that develop after spending long hours in chlorinated water. Recently I was introduced to a revolutionary innovation in water science called Magnapool. Now our mineral rich water is much more gentle and soothing on problem skin conditions as opposed to other pool waters that contain large amounts

of sodium chloride, chlorine and chemicals. Our water contains very high levels of magnesium that originates from the Dead Sea, therefore your skin is receiving all the amazing benefits of soaking in naturally therapeutic water every time you enter our pool”. Not only does the change to this new water mean Sally’s staff no longer have to change careers due to skin irritations but the water is so much better for her students. “The kids love the new water because it is very friendly on their eyes, so no goggles! And children with sensitive skin conditions like eczema don’t get irritated” One of the things I noticed whilst standing on the edge of the pool is that there is not that strong chlorine smell that you normally get around pools, it’s just naturally healthy water! And as if all these reasons were not enough to make installing their new water system good business sense it also makes Sally’s swim school environmentally friendly as it uses 65% less water than an average swimming pool and the water from the pool can be used on the gardens as it has no harsh chemicals. If you want a great swimming experience for your child whilst reducing your carbon footprint give Sally and her team a call on 33533016 or visit www.shapswim.com.au For more information on Magnapool please visit www. magnapool.com

OUTBACK JACKS

Outback Jacks Bar & Grill in Aspley is well known as the local’s choice. Boasting an extra large kid’s room with 6 play stations and movies parents get the chance to enjoy some quality time while the kids play. We sat in the fabulous al fresco dining area that spills out from the main restaurant and enjoyed the friendly, relaxed atmosphere. As they are famous for their steaks we selected Boss Cocky’s Cut as recommended by owner Katrina. We were then led to the sensational walk in wine room and selected the Barossa Valley Black Tongue Shiraz which is a great drop at only $32! The meals came out quickly and were beautifully presented; the juicy eye fillet melted in the mouth and was cooked to perfection. Served with a jacket potato with sour cream, generous side salad and coleslaw it’s a hearty meal. The extensive menu covers every appetite from a light salad to the mighty mixed grill. Fabulous atmosphere for lunch and dinner and for the families who like to dine early, come in at 5pm and be out by 6pm and your kids eat FREE! Mexican Madness

A traditional Mexican Cantina is a vibrant, colourful and energetic place where families and friends gather to eat and catch up. Enchiladas Mexican Cantina in Aspley does this tradition justice, the décor is authentic and colourful, the bustle and noise of the diners only adds to it’s energy and the menu is filled with all the favourites such as Nachos El Grande, Burritos, Tortillas and Tacos. We are greeted by our waitress and shown to a booth in the centre of the restaurant, the seating is comfortable and the high backs of the booths provide some privacy without excluding us from the atmosphere around us. We order our mains, the signature dish of the restaurant, Fajitas, and then some drinks. The restaurant does allow BYO wine but they have all tastes covered in their wine list along with local and imported beers, and of course the traditional Sangria! Our meals arrive surrounding a sizzling tray of the marinated chicken and prawns, on the side are endless mounds of tortillas, condiments and sour cream. It looks as though it’s a meal for two but the aromas are hard to resist and we dig in! The flavours are rich and fresh and the tortillas warm. The waitress refills our glasses with more Sangria and then replenishes our tortillas and condiments. We leave the restaurant full and satisfied and the meal was great value for money. Enchiladas cater for all tastes and group sizes from an intimate dinner for two to workplace gatherings. With main meals priced from $17 to $34 and kids meals and desserts also available Enchiladas is a perfect family evening out. Enchiladas Mexican Cantina is located at The Fountain Shopping Cnt, 1344 Gympie Road, Aspley. P: 3863 3666.

FINE DINING DELIGHTS As I had always associated The Coffee Club with a lunch time venue it was a very pleasant surprise to discover that the transformation to fine dining in the twilight hours does not detract from the great service and comfortable surrounds I have enjoyed over many a lunch meeting with colleagues or friends. The Coffee Club, Albany Creek has what I can only describe as impeccable service, the waitress who served us was funny, attentive and knowledgeable, a credit to her Management. We relaxed in the al fresco dining area and were immediately served iced water, when we ordered our mains the waitress helped us select a wine from their very impressive range. We choose from the restaurants newest menu offerings, Fettuccine Napoli and Slow Cooked Lamb Shank. The restaurant was very busy but retained a subtle and relaxed atmosphere. Our meals were delivered very promptly and our wine glasses refilled just as quickly. The food was lovely, the fettuccine cooked perfectly and the sauce had ample vegetables and a nice sweetness that gave the dishes great balance. The Lamb shank was so tender it fell off the bone and was complemented by the crisp texture of the vegetables and the creaminess of the mash. The extensive menu caters for every lifestyle, gluten free and vegetarian diets well provided for, and we spoke to owner of four The Coffee Clubs, including Albany Creek, Craig Pratt about his fantastic wine list, “we have a new white called Aerin’s Vineyard that is a superb drop for Summer, it’s a Pinot Grigio from the Mornington Peninsula and it’s light and delicate flavour complements a wide variety of dishes on our menu” So for great food and wine The Coffee Club Albany Creek ticks all the boxes. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at the restaurant, great service, great food, and great location. The Coffee Club is located at the corner of Ferguson & Albany Creek Roads, Albany Creek and Open until 10pm Sun-Thurs and 11pm Friday & Saturday nights P:33253020

THE NEW FAMILY IN GREAT DINING Sitting in a perfect location overlooking the hub of Albany Creek lays Portabella Restaurant. Recently refurbished and reopened by new owners Adrian and Lizeth Chrisanthou, Portabella’s offers a modern Mediterranean menu full of fresh cuisine and clean flavours. The décor is elegant and the atmosphere remains intimate in what is a relatively large restaurant. Adrian’s passion for food and family reflects in his menu, Tapas are available for groups of family and friends to share with such enticing creations as roasted button mushrooms stuffed with bacon, cream cheese, parmesan & parsley or salt & pepper calamari with fire roasted cayenne chilli sauce. We selected from the mains menu, slow roast pork belly with crackling and warm kipfler potato salad drizzled with pink lady apple & pear chutney. The pork was succulent and tender, the chutney added the perfect sweetness to balance the flavours. The service was impeccable and the food was at our table very quickly, impressive for such an extensive menu. The presence of both Adrian and Lizeth added a personal touch to our dining experience as they greeted diners and attended to tables. Portabella’s Tapas start at $9.90 and mains start at $18.90 add to this a great selection of children’s meals at $9.90 and you have a restaurant that caters to family gatherings, business lunches and corporate functions. We experienced superb food & wine in stylish surrounds and enjoyed great hosts in Adrian & Lizeth. Portabella Licensed Restaurant is located at Albany Market Place, Albany Creek. P: 3264 8044

SANTOS ITALIAN Santos Italian Restaurant in Albany Creek turns going out for a family meal into an experience! From the moment you enter the traditional decorated pizzeria you feel welcomed and relaxed. The busy restaurant is a firm favourite with North side locals and observing all the comings and goings from his open plan kitchen is Chef/Owner Santo himself. The restaurant has been open for 18 years and has perfected the art of simple Italian cuisine. We chose Santos Speciale Pizza from the extensive menu of enticing traditional Italian cuisine which includes old favourites such as Spinach & Ricotta Ravioli in a mushroom cream sauce or Pork Alla Cantanese, butterfly pork sautéed in a lemon butter sauce with shallots and fresh herbs. As we waited for our meal we watched local families and groups of friends gather and chat over their food, the restaurant has a relaxed family atmosphere. Our meals arrived and smelled delicious, the flavours fresh and clean and cooked perfectly. Accompanying our meal was some beautifully crunchy garlic bread. The service was friendly and the food great. Santos is a fantastic family restaurant and with mains ranging from $17 to $31 great value as well, so wether you are looking for a great venue for a family celebration or a place to hold a workplace function give Santo a call for a great evening out. Santos Italian Restaurant is located at 735 Albany Creek Road, Albany Creek. P: 3264 5227

THE ODD COUPLE

The location has been the same for some 30 years but the new owners of The Odd Couple in Everton Park, Dave and Jenny have breathed fresh life into the popular restaurant. The renovated restaurant focuses in cosy gatherings to share great food and conversation without having to travel from the North side. Dave has left the menu popular with locals unchanged but has added his own flavour with his signature dishes. We opted for Dave’s speciality pan fried veal with green prawn’s mushrooms & shallots finished in a light brandy sauce. The restaurant is BYO so dinners can bring their favourite wines and beers to enjoy with their meal and with a maximum of 45 diners it’s a refreshingly intimate affair. When Jenny brought our meal the aromas from the kitchen were transferred to our table. The veal was beautifully cooked and the prawns added an interesting texture. The sauce was delicious and light enough not to over power the rest of the flavours, divine! Entrees range from $9.50 to $14.50, mains $16.00 to $25.00 and the decadent desserts $6-7. Open for lunch and dinner Wednesday to Saturday and now breakfast on weekends, The Odd Couple is a highly recommended local restaurant to relax and enjoy the simple things in life like great company and sensational food. The Odd Couple is located at 12 Trouts Road, Everton Park. P: 3355 3113

y d o B y r e v E r A Club fo We know we need to exercise. We’ve watched the Biggest Loser, read magazines with “amazing body transformations’ and listened to endless ads telling us to get our “daily 30”, so why aren’t we doing it? Because in reality starting an exercise plan is scary, intimidating and seems like really hard work! There is a place where every body can feel welcome, enjoy their workout and more importantly get motivation by the bucket load! Healthworks Fitness Centre in Everton Hills prides itself on making every one of its members feel like part of the Healthworks family and to help them achieve their fitness goals. We spoke to club manager Tida Lawler who explained the clubs culture to us “Here at Healthworks we have a great retention rate of our members. I believe this is because we have world class facilities with Nautilus resistance and cardio equipment, an air-conditioned group fitness room and a custom built RPM studio but we still manage to maintain an energy and friendliness that makes our club unique”. As Tida took us on a tour of the facilities, which include a sauna, swimming pool, fantastic child minding centre and tennis courts, you can’t help but get caught up in the energy of the club. Members and staff train side by side, the group fitness room is buzzing as members chat to each other waiting for a class to begin, Mum’s gather in the crèche as they sign in their children to play while they hit the treadmills and personal trainers put their clients through their paces. As we continue our tour I notice the diversity of the members, there’s the Veterans group who meet regularly for group training sessions and a catch up, the hard core aerobics junkies sweating away to pumping music in the group fitness room, the free weights area filled with men seeking the elusive “six pack” and then the cardio studio where treadmills, bikes and rowers are filled with everyone from school students to super fit Granddads! You don’t need a perfect body or designer gym wear to be part of the Healthworks community, you just need the desire for a healthier and fitter you! A constructive alliance is forecast for you from the 15th. But you need to be consistent in the way you deal with people at this time as you’re likely to blow hot and cold. This alliance may be with members of your family, some friend or perhaps even a complete stranger. As I said, consistency will be the foundation of success and once you decide on your course of action you must not take “no” for an answer. Persistence will pay off.

It is an important time to re-configure and decompress your most important relationships this month and from the 4th till the 9th you will be spending a good deal of time talking about how you feel and how you can improve those most dear relationships. Around the 5th you will e called away to do work which could intrude upon these discussions and you must not be seen to be slacking off or losing interest. Re-assert your commitment at this time.

A romantic attachment is likely to arise in your workplace or with someone you least expect this month. The period of the 9th till the 15th is particularly highlighted. You need to be clear in your intentions and ask the other person to state their case. Initially, this may all be guesswork and superimposing of your feelings on each other. This will make it awfully difficult to work with your concentration levels being deluded by the distraction of loving eyes staring at you from the corner of the office.

You may want to overindulge your desires this month and that may be obvious between the 7th and the 11th. Self-restraint will still allow you to have sufficient fun without the after-effects of too much food, sex or alcohol. The temptation may be there but you’re wiser for resisting that temptation to go over the edge. Apart from that, your wallet probably can’t afford it. Some good karma will come your way as a result of your extending yourself to those in need between the 18th and the 21st.

Nervous tension early your savings, taxes and other investment portfolios will cause you to lose sleep and distracted from other important work this month. Speculations after the 9th likely to be hasty and ill advised. You may be listening to the wrong people when it comes to making a quick buck. Remember that unless you carefully analyse the markets, study business and investments diligently, it is good as gambling.

Between the 10th and the 15th, you may be subtlety concerned about how you are coming across to the world around you. There’s a vague dissatisfaction that you haven’t yet achieved everything you want to achieve but remember - Rome wasn’t built in a day. Exercise patience and enjoy the journey of life otherwise you’ll miss what’s happening now and that is as beautiful as what you hope to achieve in the future. Remain philosophical this month and you’ll be a lot happier.

The three most powerful forces in nature are money, sex and power. These three superpowers may form the basis of some type of emotional manipulation which you mustn’t let undermine what is otherwise a loving and nurturing relationship. Between the 3rd and the 5th, you’ll note that these energies dominate the situation and could cause a rift between you and your spouse, partner or close friend. Don’t let your bad moods be the trigger for them using emotional blackmail on you.

Avoid financial arguments at all costs this month. There’s got to be a better way, Scorpio. Mars, moving through your zone of finances, income and material values, can be problematic but only if you get too emotionally involved and reactive about other people’s opinions. Between the 1st and the 7th, you’ll need to set aside ample time to carefully assess your position and the position of someone else you either live or work closely with.

There’s nothing worse than feeling obscure or unnoticed. Between the 1st and the 4th, you may feel a little under the weather in this respect, but you mustn’t for a minute assume that if you’re not invited to some function that it’s because you’ve done something wrong. The reasons may not be clear but don’t beat yourself up over it. This cycle will pass fairly quickly and things will get back to normal.

Venus on the 8th moves back into your professional zone, your area of self-esteem and your ego, indicating a boost to your public persona and the way others see you. You may choose to change your wardrobe, enhance your elegance and make others take note of you for who you are, not so much for what you do. You’re still likely to do good work, and to bring to your activities a touch of style and creativity, which Venus is well known for.

Venus re-enters your zone this month. This means that a postponement or situation you thought may have been lost may return and give you a second bite at the cherry, so to speak. This could also be favourable news for a sibling or someone close to you such as a relative or neighbour. There could be cause for celebration and a toasting of the champagne glasses around this time. Finally, it’s important for you to put to bed any private concerns you have relating to health.

Travels are on the cards this month. If inappropriate lunch breaks haven’t added up to enough of what you’d consider reasonable time out, you need to split and head for the hills. If you have a committed partner, they may also be feeling the same and this is a great time to scat! Go and spend some time on a beach doing nothing, or better still have a few cosy, candle-lit, romantic dinners whiling the time away.

How is your prosperity? Following a turbulent year marked by a global economic crisis, the Legatum Prosperity Index has released research defining the most prosperous nations on the planet, taking into consideration both wealth and wellbeing, and has found that the most prosperous nations in the world are not necessarily those that have only a high GDP, but are those that also have happy, healthy, and free citizens. Now in its third year, the 2009 edition of the Prosperity Index ranks 104 nations according to nine building blocks of prosperity, including education, health, governance, economic fundamentals, entrepreneurship and innovation, democratic institutions, safety and security, personal freedom and social capital. Finland tops this year’s Index, with the Australia ranking sixth, ahead of the United States and large European nations such as Britain, Germany and France which all still make the top 20. Finland is narrowly ahead of Switzerland, Sweden and Denmark up top with Zimbabwe ranking last, following Yemen and Sudan. Prosperity is concentrated in the North Atlantic – for now. Sixteen of the top 20 most prosperous countries sit in North America and Europe, however history is not destiny with highly ranked nations including those with a long history of productive economies, effective and limited government, and social capital as well as several other nations highly ranked that not long ago were afflicted with poverty, oppression, and unhappiness. Good governance is considered central to life satisfaction and economic progress. Countries in which sound governance creates satisfied citizens are also the most likely to have the healthiest economic fundamentals and the most entrepreneurial societies. It’s true that money can’t buy happiness ... unless you are poor. Only in the poorest countries do increases in income have a significant effect on people’s life satisfaction. The highest levels of overall life satisfaction are reported in countries which score best in the areas of health, safety, freedom, and social capital. The Prosperity Index helps to determine which factors influence people’s happiness more than others. The results show that being able to choose the course of your life is the most important ingredient of happiness – along with your good health and relationships.

For a long life choose an educated wife By Anne Harding

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Bachelors take note: If you want to enjoy a long life, marry a highly educated woman. In a study, researchers found that a woman’s education was a stronger factor in her husband’s risk of dying over the next decade or so than the man’s own level of education. And a husband’s social class based on his occupation had a greater influence on a woman’s survival than her own occupational class, Drs. Robert Erikson and Jenny Torssander of the Swedish Institute for Social Research in Stockholm found. Living with a partner is known to reduce a person’s risk of dying early, Erikson noted in an interview with Reuters Health. And the current study, he added, suggests that one’s choice of life partner may be an important part of the equation. The effect of a partner’s social status is multidimensional, the researcher pointed out, with education, income, occupation and status each having an independent effect. Erikson and Torssander looked at 1990 census data on more than 1.5 million employed men and women, 30 to 59 years old, who were living with a partner, along with cause of death data for the period 1991 to 2003. As expected, for both men and women mortality was higher for less educated people and for those who made less money, while lower social status and working in a lower-level occupation were also tied to a greater risk of death. Men who hadn’t reached high school were 1.1 times more likely to die during follow-up than men who’d finished college. But the education of a man’s partner had a stronger effect than his own schooling; men living with a woman without any high school education were 1.25 times more likely to die than men living with a college graduate. The effect of women’s education on their own mortality was strong too. But while a woman’s own occupational class had little effect on her risk of death, women married to unskilled manual and routine non-manual laborers were 1.25 times more likely to die than women whose partners were in higher managerial and professional occupations. Men’s social class had less of an effect when the researchers accounted for income, the researchers note, while income was important in mortality for both women and men. “This points very clearly to material conditions in the household,” Erikson said. As far as women’s education, Erikson and Torssander note in their report, “women traditionally take more responsibility for the home than men do, and, as a consequence, women’s education might be more important for the family’s lifestyle -- for example, in terms of food habits -- than men’s education.” Erikson added: “We can assume that more highly educated women have better possibilities to find the important health messages that are around...There are lots of health messages in the media and I think some of them are important and some are just misleading.”
