"As shown in several results, women today are a complex combination of altruistic and materialistic, vain and insecure, loyal and self-serving. LOS ANGELES (Reuters Life!) - Smart or thin? Rich or ugly? Women still have a complex and contradictory relationship with their own image according to a poll released on Tuesday that found 25 percent of those questioned would rather win the "America's Next Top Model" TV show than the Nobel Peace Prize. And although 75 percent of women surveyed said they'd be willing to shave their heads to save the life of a stranger, more than a quarter of those taking part admitted they would make their best friend fat for life, if it meant they could be thin. As for that age-old dilemma of whether to marry for wealth or looks, half of the 18- to 24-year-olds questioned said they would marry an ugly man if he were a multimillionaire. The poll for U.S. television network Oxygen, which is targeted at young women, also found that 88 percent of 18- to 34-year-old women would happily give up their cell phone, jewelry and makeup to keep a friendship. "This survey proves an interesting dissection of today's woman and how she relates her personal image with what she values in her life," said Dr. Jenn Berman, psychothera-

"When people are fasting -- in this case skipping breakfast -- this obviously leads to people being hungrier, but it also leads to greater activity in areas of the brain involved in reward," Dr. Anthony Goldstone from Imperial College London, UK, told The Endocrine Society's annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

Past studies, Goldstone noted, have shown that people who skip breakfast on a regular basis actually tend to be heavier, tend to get more of their calories from fat, and also tend to gain more weight over the years than those who eat breakfast regularly.

The new study suggests a possible mechanism by which this might occur. "It may be that when you miss meals, and maybe particularly breakfast, your brain reward system is biased towards these high-calorie foods over the low-calorie foods," Goldstone said, "and this would be an entirely appropriate response of the body in a defense to try to maintain calorie intake."

ARE YOU FULLFILLED? TAKE YOURSELF TO THE NEXT LEVEL then how on earth can you be living in a way that offers you the best life possible? When you lack clarity, passion and purpose, each day can be a grind and draining, you then wonder why you are so exhausted! Most of the time we exhaust ourselves! Of course, you may have the occasional sparkle, yet as a whole the every-day is lack lustre.
Take the time to reconnect with yourself Are you the person you thought you would be? Are you living the life you envisioned, or have you unwittingly conformed into a product of modern society? Living day in and day out, stuck in the norm, the humdrum, blah! Striving for things that don’t make you happy is futile and exhausting. Find out what fulfils YOU..you may be very surprised how simple it can be! Each of us are at a different stage of the life path. Some of you are trekking through rocky terrain, others are tired and weary with little inspiration, maybe you have temporarily lost your way. Being true to yourself and connected to your authentic self cultivates a new understanding of who you are, which brings the self-awareness needed to get what you want out of life with much more ease, grace and joy. Who we are is largely a product of our upbringing and other impressionable environments that have influenced our core make up and beliefs. Life presents us with many choices… You have the choice to stay attached to your conditioned beliefs and behaviours, or the choice to recreate your very own self-beliefs to support your success. If you don’t have a good understanding of who you are,
It doesn’t have to be difficult or complicated. Once you recognise that you may be out of integrity, or unfulfilled and are ready for change, then a happier you is achievable for everyone. Fine-tuning your inner compass will help you navigate through life with more clarity, positive direction, energy and personal fulfilment. I often ask my clients - What does your ultimate life look like, what do you enjoy doing, what is important to you (values), what do you get lost in, or what puts a smile on your face? These questions seem simple, yet not always easy to answer. It is quite amazing how so many of us have allowed even the simplest things that make us feel good to disappear out of our lives. Re-engaging in the simple pleasures is a great place to start.
that supports YOU, in the ways that matter. Who doesn’t want to be happy? Sometimes it is the simplest things in life that make a huge difference to your every day. When you find the ‘who’ of you, you can then make a life, that actually includes you! The jewels of your life are within you. Taking time off may not be practical as lunches still need to be made, the kids still need to be fed and we still need to go to work. Look for alternatives to rest. Try going to be half an hour early everyday this week (even if it means recording your favourite tv program). On the weekend team up with another family and on one day you watch their kids and swap the next day. That gives you a whole day to do rest (and catch up on the tv programs you’ve recorded!) It is possible to get through winter without getting sick. Becoming sick is your body’s indication to slow down and rest. There is a reason the days are shorter and colder in winter... it’s nature’s way of encouraging us to stay in bed and rest. For those of you stuck in a sickness cycle, I encourage you to call me. TV, computer time may mean out-of-shape kids By Amy Norton NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Australian researchers have found that young teens who spend more than two hours in front of the TV or computer each day showed less endurance during a standard running test than their peers. The findings do not prove that TV and computer time is leading to out- of-shape kids, the researchers note in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. However, the study does lend support to advice from the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) that parents limit their kids’ screen time to a maximum of two hours per day. That advice has been based on “prudence,” rather than direct measures of kids’ fitness levels, Dr. Louise L. Hardy, the lead researcher on the new study, told Reuters Health. These latest findings suggest the recommendation is “pretty much spot-on,” said Hardy, a researcher at the New South Wales Centre for Overweight and Obesity at the University of Sydney. The study, in the American Journal of Preventive
Medicine, included 2,750 11- to 15-year-old students at schools in New South Wales who were surveyed about various sedentary activities -- including how much time they spent reading, doing homework, using a computer for “fun” and watching TV. In general, students who sat in front of the TV or computer for more than two hours a day performed more poorly on fitness testing. There was no clear effect, however, on the oldest boys. That latter finding, Hardy explained, may reflect the boys’ stage of maturation. At the age of 15, they may have had enough muscle mass that extra screen time did not affect their fitness levels as much as it did girls and younger boys. However, Hardy said, the same message still applies to older boys: limit TV and computer time in favour of physical activity. She suggested that parents make clear rules about their kids’ small-screen time, remove TVs from their children’s bedrooms or even designate “no-screen” days for the whole family. Physi cs & M a rtial A What do the laws of physics have to do with self defence? Let’s look at the rts principal “action is always faster than reaction”. In the world of physical science, this law is accepted as truth. But why do martial artists all over the world try to defy this basic principle?
Every day, martial arts experts around the globe teach you to wait for your assailant to attack. Watch them practice; you’ll see two people standing in front of each other knowing exactly what the other one is going to do waiting for the attacker to initiate the assault. This is all well and good when everyone knows their part. The “attacker” knows “how to” attack and the defender “knows” what to expect. In this situation it appears to work, even when practiced with intensity and with multiple assailants , but in the real world it puts you at a deadly disadvantage. When you’re attacked it won’t be a single technique. It will be a barrage of continuous attacks. You may be able to cover or deflect the first punch, but as the attack intensifies and your assailant gains momentum, you’re finished. Remember, in a real fight, your attacker is going to come at you with ruthless and brutal intent. Any good street fighter or criminal knows that once they get the jump on you, it’s all but over. They won’t strike, pose and wait for you to do something. They will continue with savage intent until you’re in a position of compliance. To learn how to prepare for this, contact us here at Studio Plus on 3205 6292.

Gametraders, with 45 stores nationally, says the landfill savings have led to a new trend now known as ‘retro gaming’, with an ever-increasing number of followers wanting to collect older games and accessories.
by the dump, if we didn’t trade in this sort of equipment,” said Langford. The average percentage of Gametrader sales in the above formats has been calculated along with an average weight and size. ”This year we will sell about two million dollars worth of these older format games with an average price of 12 dollars. This means that we will sell about 160,000 of these games this calendar year, at an average weight of 150 grams,” said Langford. “Until we came along, most of these would end up at the dump.” On top of this are the consoles, controllers and accessories of the older systems which would also end up as landfill. Gametraders will sell about 5,000 of these consoles per year plus 15000 older format controllers and accessories. The average weight of the console is about 1.4 kilograms and the accessories, about 200 grams.

By Ameeta Gangaram N.D.BHSc. Naturopathy Mineral make-up is made from natural minerals, which are fine miniature rock crystals taken from the earth. Mineral make-up has become popular in recent years for a few different reasons, namely: Most don’t contain preservatives; they contain fewer chemicals than ‘traditional’ cosmetics, fragrance-free, hypoallergenic and environmentally friendly. Many ingredients found in the ‘traditional’ make-up ranges are mostly absent from most mineral makeup. This make-up also does not clog the pores and can offer some sun protection due to the natural minerals such as zinc oxide contained within. It is however important to note that not all mineral brands are created equal, as with everything else today. A few tips when choosing mineral make-up:
Did
* Should not contain bismuth oxychloride * Parabens * Talc * Mineral oil- Paraffin and petroleum * Fragrances Mineral make-up is best when the range is in a loose powder form, the most natural, unaltered form of the minerals. Another point to note is that minerals cannot be given ‘organic’ status, so be aware of ranges that claim to be ‘organic’ mineral products. The only time the word ‘organic’ can be used is if the company has added organic non-mineral components to the minerals.

Positive body image not always a good thing
By Amy Norton
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - While a poor body image can be harmful, some women's health may be threatened by an overly positive perception of their shape and size, a study suggests. In a study of 81 inner-city, mostly minority women, researchers found that while two-thirds of the women were overweight or obese, many seemed to see themselves as thinner. When shown silhouettes depicting various body types, 70 percent of the women chose a normal-weight or moderately overweight figure as being closest to their own. Only five of the 31 obese women chose a silhouette that correlated with their actual weight and shape. In addition, 20 percent of obese women selected an obese silhouette as their "ideal" body type, the researchers report in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The findings suggest that many heavy women may be in the dark about their health risks, according to the researchers. "So the question for doctors then becomes, 'How can we effectively treat our overweight and obese patients, when they don't feel they're in harm's way?'" senior researcher Dr. Marisa Rose, of Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, said in a statement from the university. The findings, from a group of mostly African-American and Hispanic women seen at Temple's family planning clinic, add to evidence that many overweight minority women may see themselves as normal-weight. The current study, according to Rose, "stresses a need for culturally sensitive education for this population." That means understanding a woman's lifestyle habits from a social and economic perspective, and giving advice in a way that will be most likely to persuade her to change, she told Reuters Health. "For example," Rose said, "some inner-city African-American women have a diet heavily based on fried food and/or fast food. This diet is deeply rooted in culture and tradition and may also be economically based. Conventional dietary recommendations to avoid all fried foods are not culturally sensitive and are unlikely to be followed by this patient population." Asking a woman to add fresh fruits and vegetables, while cutting down on some fried foods, might work better, the researcher noted. Prior studies, Rose said, have shown that such "culturally sensitive messages" can get patients to adopt healthier eating habits.
Fitness helping to curb eating disorders in girls By Alison McCook (from page 2)Approximately one-half of girls are involved in high school sports, Goldberg explained. Often, being athletic can increase the pressures girls already face to be thin, since they know their bodies are being watched, and often while wearing skimpy outfits, he said. To investigate whether it’s helpful to address these pressures as part of team practice, Goldberg and his colleagues administered a program to half of 928 female students, participating in 40 sports teams. As part of the program, the researchers integrated eight weekly, 45-minute sessions into the team’s practice. During the session, teams learned about the consequences of substance use and other activities, and how good nutrition and exercise training can improve their performance. Given that depression occurs more commonly in females, girls also listed what activities they enjoy, and were encouraged to engage in those activities and keep a diary noting when they did. The activities were peer-led. For instance, teams were split into small groups with a coach-appointed leader, who directed most of the program’s activities. Each group created and presented “public service announcements” about healthy behaviors to teammates. The comparison group of girls who did not participate in the sessions were given pamphlets about eating disorders, drugs and nutrition. Goldberg and his co-author, Dr. Diane L. Elliot, have a “significant financial interest” in the sale of the program, according to a statement accompanying their report in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. As additional benefits of the program, attendees were more likely to use seat belts, eat healthier, and less likely to say they might one day consider trying tobacco, diet pills and supplements to build muscle. In an interview, Goldberg explained that one reason for the program’s success is its avoidance of “scare tactics.” Researchers taught the facts about healthy eating, and “what the good things are,” rather than freaking girls out with worst-case scenarios. Having peers lead discussions also likely helped, he said, because “kids listen to kids.” Including coaches is vital, he added, because they can have a powerful influence on students, and are typically trusted.

In an accompanying editorial, Dr. Jorge E. Gomez of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio emphasizes that no research shows that, among athletes whose weight is “within the range of normal,” shedding pounds will help their performance in any way. On the other hand, “significantly limiting caloric intake of a normal-weight child or adolescent almost surely will affect their performance, for the worse.” SOURCE: Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, November 2004.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - If every pregnant woman worldwide took vitamin and mineral supplements, there would be 1.5 million fewer babies born at low birth weights every year, a new analysis of the medical literature shows.
Currently, the World Health Organization recommends supplementation with folic acid and iron during pregnancy, Shah and his team note in CMAJ. But subsequent research has suggested that other nutrients may also be important for preventing low birth weight and premature birth.

Women should start taking vitamin and mineral supplements "as soon as they know they are pregnant," Dr. Prakesh S. He noted that about 70 percent to 80 percent of women in the U.S. and Canada use prenatal supplements.

tips to survive your workout!
A great workout far outweighs an average one but what makes a workout great? Here are five tips to get the most from your workout. 1. Eat before your workout. It is hard to draw on energy to work hard when there is nothing in your body. A piece of fruit and 5-6 nuts is a good start to carb load before working out. 2. Workout with someone. Either with a trainer, in a group or with a mate. Unless you are talking a lot you are going to get a more intense workout than on your own as you have the opportunity to be pushed. 3. Start with a plan. There is nothing worse than rocking up to workout with absolutely no clue what you are going to do. You arrive and try a bit of this and a bit of that. You have an unbalanced workout that was really rather average and you leave with out finishing properly. A standard plan would be a workout that you complete over 4-6 weeks. A time frame gives you a short-term goal to keep you motivated. 4. Use a timer or count reps to get the most from your workout. Of thousands of workouts performed over 8+ years the most beneficial ones I have seen are where accurate recording takes place whether it is how many seconds the set took or how many reps were performed. I use a timer called the GymBoss interval timer. It is from the States but is sold in Brisbane as well. 5. I know you would have heard this before but a lot of injuries can be avoided if you stretch the tight muscles after a workout. Do not attempt to stretch before workouts as it can be counter productive to your warmup. If you have no clue how to stretch see a personal trainer or start yoga. It is fantastic. I hope you enjoy your workout and have a productive day!
By Amy Norton NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Children who are overweight tend to eat a relatively large share of their calories later in the day, a new study suggests. Some studies of adults have found connections between body weight and eating late in the day; people who eat late in the day tend to eat more calories overall, while those who prefer a big breakfast tend to eat fewer calories throughout the day. In the new study, of more than 11,000 U.S. children and teenagers, researchers found that compared with their healthy-weight peers, overweight 6- to 11-yearolds generally ate a larger share of their daily calories after 4 p.m. The reverse was true among teenagers, however -- with overweight teens eating a relatively smaller share of their calories after 4 p.m., according to findings published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity. Based on the data, it seemed that teenagers who ate a relatively large amount of calories late in the day compensated for it by eating less at other times, explained researcher Dr. Sibylle Kranz, of East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. It is not clear whether eating late causes school-age children to become overweight teenagers and adults, Kranz told Reuters Health. The study data, taken from a government health and nutrition survey, were collected at a single point in time. Long-term studies are needed to gain a better understanding of how the timing of meals and snacks affects children’s weight, according to Kranz and her colleagues. Adults who want to shed pounds, or avoid gaining any, often hear advice to avoid eating after 7 or 8 p.m. But overall calorie intake, experts say, is the main concern. If you eat fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight, regardless of when those calories are consumed.

Overweight children eat more later in the day
Similarly, the quality of a child’s diet and total calorie intake -- along with physical activity -- are most important to preventing childhood obesity, Kranz noted. She recommends that parents help their children learn healthy habits and eat more “nutrient-dense” foods -- like fruits, vegetables, beans and high-fiber grains -- that are relatively low in calories but high in nutrients. The timing of meals and snacks can enter into this, according to Kranz. She pointed out that the foods people eat late in the day are often nutritionally dubious snack items. What’s more, she said, the circumstances of evening eating -- frequently in front of the TV -- may cause people to eat more than they need to satisfy their hunger.

Overweight Australians stats hit record high If you have a weight problem, like 66% of Australian adults and 23% of our children according to the Governments Institute of Health and Wellbeing website, it can seem like a nearly impossible journey back to good health. In most cases the weight has crept on slowly and then one day you glance at your reflection in a window or see a photograph of yourself and think, how did this happen to me? Well, one local business owner who has fought the weight demon and won wants to help others win their own battles.
the key to your individual success and then you leave empowered that you have achieved your goal weight and dedicated to keeping it off forever!”
The Healthshack in Albany Creek has joined forces with some of Brisbane’s best professionals to tailor a program that will get you results and the knowledge you need to maintain a healthy weight for the rest of your life.
According to the Institute people gain weight for many reasons, lack of exercise, bad nutrition choices, self-esteem issues, genetic factors. The one consistent factor is that being overweight dramatically increases your risk of cardiovascular disease, type 11 diabetes, sleep apnoea, osteoarthritis and fertility problems in women. IS YOUR MORTGAGE MAKING YOU MONEY? By Rebecca Kerta In the current financial climate it seems as though our hard earned dollar is not worth much, with prices on petrol, electricity and groceries tipped to rise, doom and gloom seems the only affordable commodity! Well according to Debbie Love from Choice Home Loans this is far from true, with real opportunities to make our money work hard for us still possible! One of the opportunities available to current homeowners is using the equity in their home to purchase an investment property. Debbie tells us “The stabilisation of the housing market means those people wanting to take advantage of affordable property prices and low interest rates can use their home to make a great investment”. Having equity in your home simply means that your house is worth more than you owe on the mortgage and you can put that money to work by investing in a new property. Debbie adds “The great benefit about using your equity in this manner is that it means you do not have to put your hand in your pocket! The equity in your home covers all the costs of acquiring your investment property and, there are still some really great, positively geared (the rent on the property is greater than your mortgage payments) property’s around that will just keep growing in value”. Another great tip from Debbie is for those in our community that have paid off their mortgages and are now living in retirement. Debbie explains, “It’s called a reverse mortgage and is aimed at those over the age of 65 who now own their homes but may be feeling a pinch living on a restricted

You will make decisions that affect the stability of your life between the 21st and the 24th. You could be bored with your usual group of friends and may opt for something a little more bizarre or out of the ordinary. This could lead you to discover new things about yourself, the others and world in general. But by the same token, may also Aquarius the cause you to err. Accept the trusted advice of a friend in these matters, and don’t do things that you’ll regret 20 Jan - 18 Feb later.

Babies born to women taking multimicronutrient supplements weighed 54 grams (about two ounces) more, on average, than babies born to women taking iron and folic acid alone. However, multimicronutrient supplements didn't appear to affect the risk of preterm birth or infants who were "small-forgestational-age." In an interview, Shah said that certain nutrients, in certain amounts, stood out as being the most important: vitamin A (2,640 IU), vitamin D (200 IU), vitamin E (10 milligrams), vitamin B1 (1.4 milligrams), folic acid (400 micrograms), vitamin C (70 milligrams), zinc (15 milligrams) and iron (30 milligrams). Low birth weight infants -- those born weighing less than 2.5 kilograms (about 5.5 pounds) --face a greater risk of health problems that extends into adulthood, Shah said. For example, they are more vulnerable to infections as infants, more likely to have developmental problems in childhood, and at greater risk of diabetes and high blood pressure as adults. Giving pregnant women these vitamins and minerals most likely prevents babies from gaining too little weight by improving their nutrition, strengthening a woman’s immune system, and reducing fetal growth restriction, Shah said. If studies bear out the findings of Shah and his team, they agree that “multimicronutrient supplementation should replace ironfolic acid supplementation in susceptible populations.”

The proximity of Saturn to Mars is a big challenge this month and warns that you need adequate, constructive outlets to channel the frustrating influence of Saturn which may be still lingering from the last month. Anger and other debilitating emotional states are likely and need to be monitored and dealt with promptly. Between the 12th and the 15th, cushion the impact by spending time alone.

Your confidence is extremely high after the 23rd when the Sun returns to your sign of Leo. This is the commencement of a new yearly solar cycle so make the most of it. Get out your best outfit and spend money beautifying yourself to make a lasting impression. If you’re on the prowl for love your energy is perfectly suited to attracting a perfect mate during this period. Venus makes you particularly charming.

Professional contacts you make this month will certainly be worthwhile. And you’ve got charming Venus to thank for this. Whilst she is influencing your career zone most formidably, others will find you appealing and will want to help you in every respect. Between the 5th and the 9th you can expect a few new opportunities to open up before you and this will excite you and give you renewed confidence in your abilities and your future professional path.

A turn of events in your professional life around the 23rd is likely to make you feel nervous about your future prospects. Don’t listen to rumors on the grapevine. Downsizing in your company or your place of work could set off alarm bells but don’t be premature. Look at this as a way of providence granting you the variety you are looking for in your career. It will probably be a lot more fun that you first imagined once you receive the news of some big change. You must go with the flow.

The solar eclipse which occurs on the 11th has deep and lasting ramifications for your professional life. Remember that with the power you achieve now, additional responsibilities will also need to be shouldered so try to educate yourself and associate with others who are prepared to deal with you on a professional level as well. Your successes now could cause others to take a swipe at you and this may be done in a very covert way. Hold your head up and don’t be drawn into petty arguments.
(from pg 11) Compared with women who took a placebo, women who took multimicronutrients were 19 percent less likely to have a low birth weight baby. When compared with women taking iron and folic acid only, the researchers found the multimicronutrient users had a 17 percent lower risk of having a low birth weight baby.

Please try to avoid gossip and hearsay this month especially between the 13th and the 18th. You’ll hear secrets, innuendos and other malicious rumors which you mustn’t buy into. Apart from the social implications of this, however, it could also draw your mind to entertainment associated with conspiracy theories, politics and unexplained mysteries. This could be a link that draws you closer to a friend or group of people who are also developing similar interests.

Venus promises you fantastic responses in any job interviews you may go for. Favorable planetary circumstances abound between the 13th and the 20th so you should make yourself available and don’t be afraid to make yourself look a little more presentable than normal. What about first homebuyers? According to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland, first homebuyers that have been waiting on the sidelines as house prices and interest rates escalated and housing affordability dropped to historic lows are making up a large percentage of new sales. Debbie said, “With the announced short term extension of the Government’s First Home Owner Boost Scheme, Australians wanting to jump on the property ladder may feel a sense of now or never! The Boost will continue for first homebuyers entering into contracts (and owner builders who commence construction) up to and including 30th September 2009, providing eligible first homebuyers with $7,000 for established homes and $14,000 for new homes. When combined with the existing $7,000 First Home Owner Grant, this brings the grant to $14,000 for established homes and $21,000 for new homes!

Sometime between the 22nd and the 25th, friendships are likely to start changing. This will be a spring cleaning of sorts – a time when the old saying, “Out with the old and in with the new”, will seem very appropriate to you. Naturally, you may feel a little saddened that you’ll have to move forward alone but it is for the best, and the moment you do so, you’ll create a brand new space around you which attracts a whole new range of characters into your life.
The shift focuses from your personal relationships to your financial commitments after the 21st. You could probably welcome a distortion in perception about the way things are but that would only continue to keep you attached to the slave maze to which many are now addicted. What do I mean by this? Well, most people find it easy to just follow the crowd, to confuse themselves with jargon, vain hopes and promises without really investigating things for themselves.

After the 17th, you may realize that you’ve inadvertently ignored or overlooked important components of a discussion with either your mother or father. ST GEORGE BRISBANE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ATTRACTS INTERNATIONAL STARS The Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF) will return to Brisbane from 30 July to 9 August with a stunning array of films from Australia and across the world. Now in its 18th year, this year’s festival promises to again bring audiences a range of cinematic highlights, including Australian and international premieres, gala events and a host of fascinating international guests. Premier and Arts Minister Anna Bligh last week announced an Indian acting legend and one of Britain’s rising stars as the special guests for the 2009 St George Bank Brisbane International Film Festival. Ms Bligh said iconic actor and producer Amitabh Bachchan will be in Brisbane for screenings and special events showcasing his 40-year career during BIFF (30 July-9 August). “Securing Mr Bachchan’s attendance is a great coup for BIFF, it demonstrates the regard in which the Festival is held amongst the international film community,” Ms Bligh said. Bachchan, a Member of the Indian Parliament from 1984 to 1987, is one of the most prominent figures in the history of Indian cinema. He has won numerous major acting awards in India and hosted India’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

Ms Bligh said Bachchan will be joined by 23year-old British actress Carey Mulligan (Pride and Prejudice), who stars in the 2009 BIFF opening night film, An Education. An Education is a coming-of-age film set in 1960’s London. The film had its world premiere at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, where it won both Audience and Cinematography Awards.

Ms Bligh said the opening night film was one of the most important selections of the festival and An Education would not disappoint. “This film will have great appeal to a wide audience – from dedicated cinephiles to those who just love going to the movies,” she said. In 2009, screenings will be held at The Regent in the Queen Street Mall and Australian Cinemateque at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA), South Bank; with special free activities and events in the Queen Street Mall. Tickets for Opening Night and the Bachchan screenings, as well as the full Festival program, will be available from 10 July. For further details, visit www.stgeorgebiff.com.au.

SYDNEY (Reuters Life!) - Australian fertility specialists aim to ease the stress out of making babies by combining their clinic with a five-star luxury resort, complete with a spa and masseurs. The Cairns Fertility Centre in Western Australia, which will specialise in assisted reproduction and in vitro fertilisation (IVF) procedures, plans to take in patients early next year. Doug Yek, the centre's financial director, said its location, near the Great Barrier Reef and other attractions, would also help boost medical tourism to the state, a market the specialists said was still in its infancy in Australia. "Thirty years ago the first IVF baby was born, and since

then the technology has improved dramatically, but the way in which a patient goes through the process of a treatment has largely stayed the same," Yek told Reuters. "We are trying to take it up to the next level by providing services that minimise stress, which can play a big part in the outcome of the treatment, and hopefully improve their prospects." The centre is the brainchild of IVF specialist Dr. John Yovich, who runs Western Australia's leading reproductive clinic, the PIVET Medical Centre. Describing the Cairns clinic as a "one-stop-shop" for conceiving couples looking for a bit of relaxation, Yek said that in addition to the medical facilities, the 12-storey build-

"Confidentiality is the key and what we will provide will give that to patients because it's all in the one building." The apartments will cost approximately A$ 200 to A$300 ($160-$240) a night, but packages are available for longer stays as most IVF treatment take at least three weeks. By Pauline Askin

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - High school students who smoke cigarettes and try to quit often fail, health officials warn. “Despite their relatively short smoking histories, many adolescents who smoke are nicotine dependent, and such dependence can lead to daily smoking,” investigators with the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
The new findings come from the Youth Risk Behaviour Survey, an initiative of the CDC that measures the rate of health risk behaviours among high school students through biennial national, state and local surveys. Among a representative sample of 14,041 U.S. high school students surveyed in 2007, the CDC found that 60.9 percent of students who ever smoked cigarettes daily tried to quit smoking cigarettes; however, among those who tried to quit, only 12.2 percent were successful. While the rate of success in kicking the habit did not vary by sex or race, age was a factor. More students in 9th grade were successful at quitting (22.9 percent) than in 10th grade (10.7 percent), 11th grade (8.8 percent) and 12th grade (10.0 percent).
KEEP YOUR HAIR HEALTHY ON A WINTER CHILL
“These data suggest the importance of targeting young smokers with cessation counselling while their likelihood of success in quitting is greatest,” the authors point out. “Furthermore,” they add, “current best practices recommend that, to prevent youths from starting to smoke, states establish and sustain comprehensive tobacco control programs that increase excise taxes, promote smoke-free air policies, and conduct media campaigns in conjunction with other community-based interventions, such as tobacco-use prevention programs in schools that include school policy and education components.”

Dry skin isn’t the only victim of the cooler months; hair often feels the full brunt of winds and heaters. Once hair dries out it becomes dull and lifeless; to stop this occurring apply a simple hair treatment once a week. Homemade varieties are always great; hair masks can include things like; natural yogurt, avocado, banana and olive oil. Feel free to mix ingredients together and apply by massaging into the scalp. Leave the mask on for 10-15 minutes and wash out with your regular shampoo and conditioner.
The higher success rate among 9th grade students compared to older students might be due to lower levels of dependency from smoking fewer cigarettes per day or having smoked for shorter periods, the article notes.
