Body Beautiful requires Body Sculpting I honestly had no idea of what to expect when we walked into the beautifully presented studio in the Homemaker Centre at Aspley that is home to HYPOXI Body Sculpting. Media slogans like “surgery free liposuction” and “stubborn fat melted away” bombarded my brain and led to a sense of anticipation and excitement. I secretly thought I would cruise through the exercising part of the treatment; after all I’m a fitness instructor and exercise nearly every day! But all the exercising in the world didn’t seem to budge the belly fat I still carried as testament to my three beautiful babies, so, along with a male friend I have brought along, I went into the studio open minded, excited and ready to change my body shape! Greeted immediately by Gabriel Fuller, the owner of HYPOXI Body Sculpting, we instantly felt at ease. Gabe is unassuming and friendly and very passionate about helping people get the body they want, safely and effectively. Gabe explained the HYPOXI process to us “Our therapy treatments are the most effective way to reduce and eliminate unwanted fat and cellulite. HYPOXI targets the problem zones of the stomach, waist, hips, buttocks and thighs through the unique combination of vacuum therapy and gentle exercise. Suitable for both men and women, HYPOXI treatments are ideal for all ages and fitness levels. HYPOXI improves cellulite, improves skin tone and increases fitness” I’m ready for all the above so we go through to the training room which contains 5 large machines and one treadmill. Gabe asks what areas we are concerned about, I mention my jelly belly and my partner on this journey for the body beautiful, Wayne, is going all out for a six pack! Wayne gets put on a machine called a S120 that inside resembles an exercise bike, a rubber seal is placed around his torso and then the machine is closed to encapsulate him inside. The machine then uses pressure and vacuuming to stimulate the blood flow to the target areas as Wayne gently cycles in an upright position. Wayne explains how it feels “the cycling is easy and not fast, the vacuuming feels a bit strange but not painful or uncomfortable in any way. I could certainly do this for the whole 40 minutes”. Then it’s my turn and Gabe takes me over near the treadmill, I ask why I’m not joining Wayne, who at least gets to sit down! and Gabe explains that this machine, called the Vacunaught, has been designed to specifically target abdominal fat. So after being put into what I would describe as a cut-off wetsuit which transforms me into a member of the Telletubbies, I am attached to some hoses and the treadmill starts moving! At first it feels as though hundreds of octopus tentacles are squeezing and sucking my whole abdominal area, the suits actually pulsates with the pressure of the vacuums, but it doesn’t hurt and I got used to it pretty quickly. After about 10 minutes of the session Wayne is still cycling away whilst chatting to Gabe and watching old movies whilst I’m starting to sweat, pouring with sweat would be a more accurate description! By the time my session is over I feel like I’ve had a really decent workout which surprised me. We are told we need a minimum of 12 sessions each to get the results we are after and Wayne groans as Gabe dispenses our program guidelines, no carbs after a session, limit alcohol and fat intake. We have now had 6 treatments and the results really do speak for themselves. Wayne has lost fat all over his body and looks trimmer, firmer and feels much fitter. I went to the beach this weekend with my family and finally felt very comfortable walking around in my bikini, no sarong needed! Can’t wait to see the final result after all 12 sessions are completed, we’ll let you know what happens and if Wayne gets his six pack maybe even add some photos!

WHERE WILL WE MEET?
Did a quick u-turn at the lights to go home and retrieve my ten year old’s soccer boots because she forgot that she had training again, my husband has another late meeting so there goes my yoga class tonight and apparently our new puppy thinks my rug looks a lot like the grass in the back yard! So much chaos and it’s only
8.30am! But, skip forward 15 minutes and my life is once again civilised, relaxed and enjoyable. Sitting with friends laughing at the craziness of the morning rush to get our households up and running, relaxing as I sip my delicious cappuccino and enjoying the bustle of the other patrons I decide our weekly catch up at The Coffee Club plays a big part in keeping me sane! The staff are extremely well versed in their menu and greet you as soon as you enter. We meet at The Coffee Club in Albany Creek because it’s so central and there’s always parking, one less stress to worry about! One of the best features is that you can relax inside in air-conditioned comfort or sit outside watching the world go by. One of The Coffee Club Albany Creek’s owners, Craig, told us the concept of the eatery “We love The Coffee Club model of restaurant because it has the flexibility to suit everyone’s needs and tastes, we open at 6.30am everyday and are busy with breakfast meetings and family gatherings, our diverse lunch menu has something for all tastes and our low fat, gluten free and vegetarian options are clearly identified” This menu really does make life easy for families or large groups as all tastes and dietary requirements are catered to, add to this that the fully licensed restaurant is open till 10pm and you have found an oasis of good food, great service, excellent coffee and central location all at The Coffee Club Albany Creek. Oh, my scrumptious looking caramel slice has arrived so it’s back to catching up with my friends!

Mums, are you feeling Tired? stress and fall pregnant naturally. If your body is not doing any of these things properly then it is possible that your thyroid is under-functioning. Now is the time to do something about it before it gets worse. Once you have hypothyroidism you can have reproductive problems including a reduction in ovulation, pre-menstrual symptoms, heavy periods and infertility. Without the thyroid gland producing hormones your metabolism stops, meaning your body stores fat instead of burning it off. It also restricts the body’s ability to give you energy. If this sounds familiar, it’s a good time to look at the issue as we’re coming in to spring; making it a great time to lose some weight and gain some energy. If you are experiencing some of these symptoms you have two choices, one, take positive steps to get things back to normal or secondly do nothing and wait for hypothyroidism to take over your body. All these common symptoms most mums face and could be traced back to the thyroid not working properly. If you’re thinking this could be you, give me a call on 0438 821 283; even if you just have a question. I’m here to help you feel 100%. You don’t have to feel anything less.

If you’re feeling tired, exhausted and lethargic you may have sub-clinical hypothyroidism. This is a condition that affects many mothers who are unaware and blame themselves for feeling unhappy, tired, exhausted, constipated, low energy, lack of sex drive and no matter what you try you can’t lose those extra kilos. Medically, you’re on your way to hypothyroidism, especially if you don’t do anything about it. Hypothyroidism is a condition that stops the creation of other important hormones that keep you operating normally. It begins as sub-clinical hypothyroidism which is when the thyroid is slightly under-functioning with only a few minor symptoms listed above, then over the years the symptoms become worse and you have more related problems; after that it can become medically diagnosed hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s. Hypothyroidism is a condition that requires medication for life. The thyroid is the small gland (lump) that sits at the front of your throat. When it works normally we feel energised, we lose weight easily, manage stress appropriately, have little or no PMS and we fall pregnant easily. This is normal not something that only some women have; we are all born with a fully functioning thyroid. Therefore we all have the ability to lose weight easily, manage

The original and still the best When times are tough we search out things to cheer us up, make us feel better and for a moment transport us to a place where the daily grind doesn’t seem to matter. I recently found such a place, a place where you can listen to great music or watch a family movie on the plasma screen, you can relax in air conditioned comfort or sit outside and watch the world go by and the kids don’t whine, ever! Is this Heaven? No, it’s Cold Rock Ice Creamery in Aspley, but with one mouthful of their Cookies & Cream you certainly could believe you were in Heaven. I spoke with the owner of the store Karl Lipscombe and he told me “Cold Rock ice cream is fast becoming an Aussie tradition, with stores all over the country, but this outlet in Aspley was the first, the original” something that may not be obvious when you enter the recently renovated shop and enjoy it’s modern atmosphere. When asked why he became a Cold Rock franchisee Karl said the decision was easy, “I’m a very proud Australian and unlike many other ice cream chains so is Cold Rock. It’s an Australian owned company and our ice cream is wholly Australian made, that was very important to me” When it comes to his famous ice cream every taste bud is catered for as Karl explains, “We have all the classic flavours and a few new ones! We also carry a selection of low fat gelati flavours”. Karl, who also owns the Cold Rock at South Bank, has recently taken over the Aspley store with his wife Samantha. As they are a local family the decision to become a part of their local community was
easy. Karl says “We take pride in offering great service and products to our local customers, this community is very important to us, we live here and we employee local residents who work in the store”. Well the local children are definitely in support of Karl and Sam as the Cold Rock innovation of mixing lollies, chocolates, fruit or biscuits into their already delicious ice cream gives kids a chance to make up their own creations then watch the friendly staff “Choose it, Mix it, Smash it”, right in front of their eyes! but as Karl mentions “It isn’t just the children that come in, because the quality of our ice-cream is so high adults love our cones, sundaes and smoothies, Cold Rock is for kids of all ages!” And I agree, although it may not be so great for the waistline it is certainly great for the soul! You can find Karl and Sam’s Cold Rock store at 1/1378 Gympie Road, Aspley or call them on 3263 8910.

- Legends of the octagon
When the history of mixed martial arts is written, two names will stand at the top of the heavyweight division - Randy “The Natural” Couture and Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira. But these two legendary former champions weren’t thinking about the history books, they were both looking to make another run at the UFC title, and to get there, they faced each other in the Octagon in the main event of UFC 102: Couture vs. Nogueira
The Outcome A rare appearance before hometown fans ended in disappointment for Randy Couture, who lost an unanimous decision to Brazil's Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the main event of UFC 102. At the age of 46, Couture would seem like an unlikely superstar in a sport that is dominated by younger grapplers. On Saturday, the 33year-old Nogueira proved to be too much for Couture to overcome. To the dismay of the partisan crowd of 16,088, Nogueira wound up winning all three rounds on all three of the judges' scorecards. Afterward, a battered Couture said he felt it was a fair decision. "I thought he clearly won all three rounds," Couture said of his heavyweight opponent. For Nogueira, it was an honor to be in the same ring with Couture. "I have a lot of respect for Randy," the Brazilian said. "That's why I trained so hard." After an evenly matched opening two minutes, Nogueira landed a hard righthand punch that knocked Couture to the mat. The resilient Couture managed to fight his way back to his feet and was able to dish out several hard shots before the end of the round. One of those shots even opened a cut on the side of the Brazilian's left eye, but the judges still gave Nogueira the overall edge for the round. Another hard hit sent Couture to the mat early in the second round, and he stayed there until managing to fight his way back to this feet. But Nogueira showed his strength by following up with a string of hard right hands to Couture's head. "He has a great jab and he followed it with some pretty good right hands," Couture would say later of Nogueira. Couture went down again early in the third and took a considerable amount of punishment while on his back. Just as he had two times before, Couture was able to reverse his way out of trouble. He retaliated with elbows to Nogueira's jaw. But it wasn't enough for the former assistant wrestling coach at Oregon State, and Nogueira managed to hold on for the victory. "I knew it would be a tough fight and I was prepared for that," Nogueira said. "I was fighting against one of my heroes."

The difference between “good” & “bad” fats
THE TRUTH ABOUT FATS
By Ameeta Gangaram N.D. Organic Matters- Tel 3264 7463
It’s true…Not all fats are created equal. Fats are essential to the functioning of our bodies. They play a key role in mental development, cardiovascular health and proper nervous system functioning as well as vitamin absorption and energy production. The important thing to remember that the fats that we require are the ‘GOOD’ fats, which are called unsaturated fats. These can be broken down into 2 categories. The first of the unsaturated fats include monounsaturated fats, which play a vital role in increasing our good ‘HDL’ and reducing the bad ‘LDL’ cholesterol. Good sources of these fats include: Almonds, cashews, avocados and sesame seeds. The second of the unsaturated fats are the polyunsaturated fats. These are broken down into the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These fats have many essential roles to play in the body. They are also known as essential fatty acids (EFA’s), and are so named due to the fact that our bodies cannot produce these fats and they have to be obtained from our diets. These EFA’s help in reducing LDL, reducing inflammation in the body and maintaining a healthy heart. Sources include Salmon, Tuna, Mackerel, Herring, Sunflower seeds, Flaxseeds (freshly ground/ or oil) and walnuts. The ‘BAD’ fats are known as saturated fats and they cause the bad ‘LDL’ cholesterol to increase and build up in our arteries and they also increase our risk of cardiovascular disease. Sources of these fats include: Dairy, cream, processed meats , fatty meat and animal products including lard. It is essential that we look not only at the total fats we consume but at the percentage of good and bad fats and the quality of fats we are consuming i.e. change from animal products, dairy and fatty pieces of meat to lean meat, skinless chicken and low fat cheese (cottage cheese). Limit the bad and increase the good. If you need assistance with your diet or have specific health conditions you would like advice on please call Ameeta on 3264 7463 and make an appointment to get your health back on track.

Good News for those who take vitamins NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Good news for those who take vitamin supplements: People who take a multivitamin and vitamin E nearly every day for 10 years seem to have a slightly lower risk of death from heart disease, study findings hint. Those who take vitamin E and C supplements may also have a lower risk of death overall in a five-year period, while those who take vitamin C may have a lower risk of death from cancer, note study authors Dr. Gaia Pocobelli, at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, and colleagues. While the findings of the current study back earlier studies, many of the decreased risks are small, and may have more to do with other healthy behaviors in which people who take vitamins are likely to take part, the authors are quick to add in their report in the American Journal of Epidemiology. The team surveyed 77,719 men and women in Washington State who were between 50 and 76 years old. Overall 67, 47, and 48

percent of the study group had ever used multivitamins, vitamin C, and vitamin E supplements, respectively. Researchers saw slightly decreased risk for death from heart disease among those reporting the most frequent multivitamin use. When the researchers looked at vitamin C use, those who took more than 322 milligrams per day had a slightly decreased overall and cancer-related risk of death within five years, compared with non-users. Those with a history of heart disease who took this level of vitamin C had slightly decreased risk for death from heart disease. Compared with non-users, men and women reporting more than 215 milligrams per day of vitamin E per day - roughly the amount found in a typical supplement -- had slightly decreased total and heart disease-related risk of death. The investigators saw no association between cancer death risk and vitamin E intake.

Sunbeds join cigarettes as top cancer threat SYDNEY (Reuters Life!) - Tanning beds have been ranked alongside cigarettes, arsenic and asbestos as posing the greatest threat of cancer to humans by an international cancer research group. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has moved ultra-violet emitting tanning beds to its highest cancer risk category and labelled them as “carcinogenic to humans” after ruling they are more dangerous than previously suggested. The France-based agency, which is part of the World Health Organization, had previously classified sunlamps and tanning beds as “probably” carcinogenic to humans. The research, published in the latest edition of The Lancet Oncology medical journal, found using tanning beds could increase the risk of developing cancer by 75 percent, particularly if used by children and young adults. “The risk of skin melanoma is increased by 75 percent when use of tanning devices starts before 30 years of age,” the report reads. The IARC report came after scientists from nine countries met in June to reassess the risks of cancer from different types of radiation, with solar radiation the main source of human exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
Spring training: How to get fit before summer Summer is the best time of the year. The weather is great, there are plenty of things to do outside, and life just seems so much more carefree in the summer months. Ah... summer. It’s the time to be outdoors, for going to the beach, going for a run outside, picnics at the lake, or simply being able to walk around in shorts, t-shirt, and flip flops. The IARC has since 1971 published a series of “Monographs on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans,” also known as WHO’s encyclopaedia of carcinogens, ranking the risk agents in groups from one to four. Group 1, the new ranking for tanning beds, also includes asbestos, arsenic and tobacco products. The WHO has stated that is does not recommend the use of UV tanning devices for cosmetic purposes with sunbeds now being made to produce higher levels of UVB to mimic the sun and speed up the tanning process. Some countries and U.S. states regulate the multi-billion dollar industry, with some banning teenagers from using sunbeds or requiring consent from their parents or doctor. In Australia, children are banned from using solariums and it is a requirement for the tanning industry to post warnings of health problems, including skin cancer that is associated with artificial tanning in salons. This regulation was enforced by a court ruling following the death of Clare Oliver who died in September 2007 at the age of 26 after losing her battle with cancer that she said was caused by her visits to tanning salons.

Pilates: getting to the core of the matter By Dorene Internicola NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - Let the group fitness gadflies flit from belly dancing to body sculpting to circus stunts. Pilates people opt to take long, steady aim at the core. And they say the payoff is sweet: strength without bulk, slender thighs, flat-as-a-board abdomen. "With Pilates, the focus is core strength," said Jessica Matthews of the American Council on Exercise. "It concentrates on centering and encouraging improved posture and strength throughout the core." The core, or powerhouse, refers to the muscles that gird the torso from the lower rib cage to below the beltline. Pilates is a system of over 500 exercises that promises to condition the total body by centering on that center. The mat exercises comprise several series of leg lifts, chest curls, and roll ups - each one said to be the equivalent of six sit-ups - and the signature "hundred," which entails much flapping of the arms and legs. And while they might look like sophisticated sit-ups, the moves are performed with precision, concentration, breath control and flow. In fact, Pilates was originally called Controlology. "Because you're so aware of where the exercise is coming from, you're really focused on where you're working," Michele Bastos, Pilates instructor at the Crunch national chain of health clubs, said of the regimen now practiced by an estimated 10 million people worldwide. Unlike the 5,000-year-old practice of yoga to which it is often compared, Pilates is the 20th century creation of one man. German-born boxer, gymnast, and physical therapist Joseph Pilates originated his system as a rehabilitation tool in the 1920s. Some of the first people he treated were soldiers returning from World War I. When he moved to New York City in 1926, his studio was located near the New York City Ballet. Dancers, George Balanchine and Martha Graham among them, spoke of 'going to Joe's' to strengthen their bodies and ease their aches and pains. The dance connection stuck. As did the notion that Pilates produces a

dancer's long, lean body. "I believe it's true," Bastos said. "Pilates strengthens and lengthens muscles at the same time, so it's different from weight training, which only works concentric muscles. In Pilates the muscles get really long," she explained. "Even in breathing we try to work the abs. We inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth to get all air out of stomach," she said "We do not allow ribs to pop out." Mat classes remain the most popular, but Bastos sees interest in the Pilates equipment growing. "You start on the mat and move to the machines." Bastos said of the Reformer, the Cadillac and the Chair. The founder himself created the forerunners of these wood-and-leather contraptions of levers, springs and pulleys when, working in an infirmary, he rigged hospital bedsprings to offer light resistance to bedridden patients. "The mat works against gravity only. On machines you have spring tension," said Bastos. Of course, similarities between Pilates and yoga have spawned the inevitable hybrid: Piyo or Yolaties, by any other name. Other so-called fusion classes provide the cardio workout missing from a Pilates. Something called Rock Star Pilates adds spinning. "It's perfect if clients only have one hour," Bastos said. Or, if they need to do a little flitting.

SPRING INTO SPRING With the summer months looming quickly, and daylight hours getting longer, now is the time many of us look through our wardrobes to check the summer clothes. If they’re feeling a bit tight, these holidays are a good time to try some of the following tricks to shed a few kilos: - - - - - - - - -
Get out and about by foot or cycle, rather than by car these holidays. Use your body to reach your destination, visit friends or to buy the milk and paper. Take advantage of the warmer mornings or evenings by building up your exercise program. Aim for 45 minutes most days if trying to lose weight. Check in with your appetite. Eat when you’re hungry, and stop when you’re satisfied (rather than full). If you find yourself picking even though you’re not hungry, try and find something else to do instead, such as that bed of weeding that’s been waiting to be done. Go for 2 fruit and 5 vegetables. Most of us don’t eat enough fruit and vegetables, despite their many health benefits. Their fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants help keep us healthy, protect against many diseases, keep us regular, and fill us up more. Keep higher fat snacks as treats rather than every day foods. Chocolate, chips, pastries, rich cakes / muffins, biscuits, pies, nachos, fried foods, etc can be enjoyed in small quantities, but try to limit then to no more than once a week. Make sure that you are drinking adequate amounts of fluids. When you’re hungry, before you reach for something to eat grab a glass of water to see if you were actually just thirsty! Utilise any extra time on the holidays to develop some good eating habits and new skills with the kids. Try a few different options for breakfast that take too long for school days such as a healthy omelet or French toast. Walk to the markets to do your weekly fruit and vegetable shopping, it is a more active way to shop and the different / vibrant environment will facilitate an introduction to some healthy new foods for the kids and family. Act out your own reality TV show rather than watching one and have the kids trial some new recipes for their lunch boxes such as the following muesli bar recipes.

'Multi-taskers' are bad at one thing:
multi-tasking NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who text-message while listening to an iPod while reading the newspaper probably think they are good at "multi-tasking." They are wrong, according to a study published Monday. Researchers at Stanford University found that college students who made a habit of immersing themselves in various media at once were not very skilled at tests of memory, attention and, ironically, "task-switching." In a nutshell, "they're terrible at multi-tasking," Dr. Clifford Nass, one of the researchers on the work, told Reuters Health in an interview. The findings, published in the online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, are surprising, the researchers admit. The findings also suggest that today's array of devices that make multi-tasking possible, and supposedly easy, may not be a good thing. Going into the study, Nass said, he and his colleagues assumed that "heavy multi-taskers" must have some innate ability that allowed them to handle several tasks at once. Maybe they were good at filtering out irrelevant distractions from their environment, the researchers hypothesized. But a simple cognitive test of such filtering -- where test-takers were asked to focus on the characteristics of a group of red triangles while ignoring a few extraneous blue triangles -- showed that multi- taskers performed more poorly than people who were not prone to media multitasking. The same was true when study participants took a test that measures the brain's ability to organize and file away information, and when they took a test of task-switching. The multi-taskers were actually slower to shift their attention from one test task to another. The study included 262 college undergraduates who filled out questionnaires on their media use -- how often they went online, watched TV, read, listened to music, emailed and text-messaged, and how often they did a few of those things at once.
By Amy Norton
Students classified as either heavy or light media multitaskers then took the series of cognitive tests. While the results suggest that heavy multi-taskers are not actually good at what they do, the reasons for that are not clear, Nass said. Overexposure to too many media distractions may be at fault -- or it may be that people who are "born bad multi-taskers" are, ironically, more drawn to doing it. It's possible, according to Nass and his colleagues, that heavy multi- taskers tend to have a generally "exploratory" orientation: they simply like to gather lots of information, even if that means sacrificing their performance on the task at hand. But whether heavy media multi-tasking causes the differences seen in this study or not, Nass said, the implication would seem to be the same: "Heavy multi-taskers should stop doing it." "Society is developing tools all the time to make multitasking easier," he said. "The question is whether that's a good thing."
Muscle Mass not fat, makes for stronger bones NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - New findings call into question the idea that being overweight or obese might protect people from developing brittle bones. Dr. Jean-Marc Kaufman of Ghent University Hospital in Belgium and his colleagues found that fatter men had smaller, thinner bones, while those with more lean mass had larger, denser skeletons. High body mass index (BMI) has been thought to protect both men and women against the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis, while being thin boosts a person’s likelihood of fractures due to this condition. The idea behind the theory is that extra weight stresses the bone, stimulating the formation of new bone tissue. But new evidence suggests that fat mass might affect bones differently than muscle mass does, Kaufman and
Balanced Magazine

his team note in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. To investigate the issue further, the researchers looked at bone density and volume, as well as lean and fat mass, in 768 men aged 25 to 45, including 296 pairs of brothers. After the researchers adjusted for weight, they found that men’s bone mass and volume fell steadily as their percentage of fat mass increased, while bone size rose in tandem with lean mass. Fat in the trunk area had a stronger influence on bone size than fat on the arms and legs. “Lean mass,” the researchers conclude, “is the major determinant of bone size, providing further evidence that bone size is adapted to the dynamic load imposed by muscle force rather than passive loading” by fat.

Easy ways to boost your energy! 1. Protein (Daily requirement around 1 gram per kilogram of bodyweight) You need protein to build muscle tissue and stay toned and lean. Top three leanest options are chicken breast, turkey breast or tempeh for vegetarians. 2.Selenium (Daily requirement100 micrograms) A powerful immunity enhancer and for men also the secret to reduction of prostate cancer risk. Brazil nuts are THE source but it can also be garnered from sunflower seeds and canned tuna. 3.Fibre (daily requirement 35g) High fibre diet is like natures internal brush to keep you regular and also something you should check if you want to be slim. Fibre should be increased gradually and top three sources are dried figs, wholegrain bread or Ezekiel bread(spouted grains). 4.Potassium (daily requirement 3200 mg) While the banana is usually sprouted for its potassium richness which is essential for muscular contractions and also cramp prevention; the avocado, baked potato and dried figs are a great source of potassium.
5.Zinc (daily requirement 15 mg) Needed to keep healthy nails and hair but also an important part of full immune function, zinc is often low in the average male diet. Top three sources are Oysters (which unfortunately can’t be eaten every day), lean grass fed beef and sunflower seeds. SS are great in muesli or salads. 6. Calcium (daily requirement 1000mg) Helping you stay lean and keeping your bones strong calcium has mostly been assigned to dairy but almonds, kale and broccoli are also a nondairy source of this vital nutrient. Need a Massage? Make it a Migun Not everyone can pronounce it properly (it’s me-gun!) and not everyone knows what it means (“beautiful health” in Korean) but everyone who has succumbed to a Migun Thermal Massage treatment agrees that it is an experience worth repeating, and some of our devotees repeat it almost daily! Now located in a purpose built centre inside The Healthshack in Albany Creek, Migun massage is a collaboration of eastern medicine techniques including acupressure, massage and moxibustion with the technology of the west. Each treatment provides multiple therapies to provide natural relief from conditions such as chronic pain, migraines, insomnia, stress, stomach bloating, bad circulation and many more. The body is flooded with deep penetrating heat and healing infrared lights whilst the pressure points along the body are triggered and the muscles along the whole body are massaged, relaxed and strengthened. Six different treatments are available so Migun treatments can be specific to a clients needs and requirements, choose from a sports massage, pure acupressure massage or a focus on the lumbar region of the lower back. The fully trained staff at The Healthshack can assist in choosing a program suited to you and to achieve

better health and wellbeing for each and every client. Some of our regular clients tell their stories.
“I started using Migun massage about 18 months ago. At first it was merely a relaxing, enjoyable experience, enough to encourage me to purchase several 10 session courses. I found that my chronically sore back, which tended to incapacitate me 3-4 times a year no longer did so. Whether it is the relaxing process or whether it works the muscles and spine enough to give relief is unknown, but it works for me. I have since taken out a year subscription to attend sessions whenever I can fit them in. This is an extremely good value for money way of attending Migun sessions. I will definitely be subscribing again next year for a 12 month session. Together with my walking and bike riding exercise, Migun has become part of my fitness regime.” Pat, Albany Creek “I use Migun as a rehabilitation tool after exercise, playing a contact sport like AFL I have a lot of bumps and bruises come Sunday morning, that’s were Migun has its greatest benefit for me. I am able to sit back and relax whilst the bed gets deep into my muscles releasing all the tension from the previous day, it’s also perfect the days after a heavy gym workout.” Adam, Taringa

Men Connecting Live with confidence, masculinity and real connection through communication! Part 1 (next month Part 2- Women Connecting) Over the ages, many men have been taught to shut off their emotions with beliefs and ways of dealing with difficult situations such as; “boys don’t cry”, “forget about it”, “you’ll be right mate” or “just have another drink” - How effective has this been? How much of our behaviour is a result of ‘nature’ and how much is ‘nurture’ (taught beliefs and behaviour)? There have been many studies with plenty of scientific evidence to explain gender differences, however my experience as a professional personal coach is that nurture has a huge impact on the way both women and men interact as a whole. You would be surprised that studies reveal that men and women are more alike than different, in their desire for love and connection with others. Communication and expression has more to do with upbringing and social conditioning, than gender or hormones – these unique aspects of our makeup influence us, yet are not the defining factors. There are men who are poor communicators, as there are women. There are women who are high-level communicators, as there are men. There are also women who are withdrawn and inexpressive as there are men. However, for the purpose of this article, I am relating to a common theme - of men who find it difficult to really connect and express themselves, in a healthy and constructive way. Being over emotional and dramatic is one challenge (often for women), on the flip side, being unemotional and shut off is another. Finding a happy medium is the key! (Next month I will explore women and their ways of communicating) Books that claim men and women are from different planets, sends an unhealthy message, which only further polarises and separates the sexes. In general, the men I coach are often looking for fulfilment on a personal and professional level, which are interlinked in life. Almost everyone wants love, to share and to express themselves (intimacy). Most crave it, yet many haven’t achieved it, due to a lack of connection with oneself, poor emotional awareness and ‘know how’. There are many men out there, who want to connect with their partner, yet fear that connecting, sharing and expressing themselves is an act of weakness or not masculine – this is a learned belief and inaccurate. To show vulnerability is in fact an act of strength! If only men felt more comfortable and confident to express themselves and share, and/or ask for help, without feeling judged or seen as “weak”. It is high time men are encouraged to communicate openly and expose their inner feelings, which is a way of connecting with others, which is normal. You are never too young or too old to start! Taking the time to learn how to connect with yourself and others can hugely influence the fulfilment you experience and the quality of your life.
4)
Learning how to speak and express yourself in a way that is authentic, heartfelt and honest, creates real intimacy and understanding on many levels.
If you would like to enhance your relationships, then I encourage you to be open and bold and explore new ways to show up in the world - to be free to speak from the heart and truly experience the world of real connection. You might surprise yourself for the better! Here are some points to get you thinking… 1) You are human (not a robot) and experience an array of emotions, which is normal and is healthy to talk about. 2)
Men are often expected to cope on their own! Talking to friends can be comforting, however not always conducive to being helpful. Seeking professional support is an effective way to get the ball rolling.
3)
Don’t let outdated social beliefs, the fear of rejection and being self-conscious stand in your way of having connected and fulfilling relationships.

Your summer beauty routine, inspired by natu
re
(ARA) – Warm weather is here and it’s time to update your beauty routine for summer. Why not take some inspiration from warm weather’s renewal theme and refresh your beauty regimen? The welcome change in seasons brings longer days, trees and flowers in bloom and more time spent outside. Nature has so much to offer, including inspiration for products that can help you look and feel beautiful from head to toe. “It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by choices with so many new products on the market,” says Jeni Thomas, a beauty scientist with Procter & Gamble. “It can be difficult to know which products really work and which natural ingredients can be effective elements of your beauty routine. The key to finding nature-inspired products that do work is to look for ones that blend and balance nature with science.” Seeking out products that combine the best of ingredients with the best of science gives you natureinspired options that really perform and keep you looking your best. While many new beauty manufacturers may be unfamiliar to you, some of the most highly recognized and respected cosmetics brands are now offering nature-inspired products. Consumers often gravitate toward these brands because they are recognized, trusted, and easily available. Here is a sampling of nature-inspired products from brand names you recognize and that you’ll easily find on your local supermarket or drug store shelves:
* CoverGirl now offers TruBlend MicroMinerals foundation, designed to fine-tune mineral coverage from sheer to full. The product incorporates iron oxides, minerals that give nice even coverage to skin, as well as pearl and mica to give skin a luminous, healthy glow. * Hair color goes nature-inspired with Clairol’s Natural Instincts line. Like other Clairol products, the hair color blends away gray in just 10 minutes, but relies on an antioxidant-rich, ammonia-free formula with vitamins C and E to accomplish healthy-looking color and shine. * Consumers know and trust the name Olay. Now the company has introduced a Botanical Fusion Body Wash formulated with scents and ingredients inspired by nature, such as patchouli, rosemary and ginger. The wash incorporates these invigorating scents with hydrating and skin-nurturing ingredients. * The Cassia plant, a botanical science discovery that helps give hair radiance, softness and strength, is the key ingredient in Pantene Pro-V’s new Nature Fusion shampoo. “Consumers looking for nature-inspired products no longer have to search specialty shops or the Internet to find the effective products they crave,” Thomas says. “Some of the most recognized names in health and beauty are responding to consumer demand with effective, cost-conscious, nature-inspired products.” To learn more about nature-inspired beauty products, visit ww.pgbeautyscience.com. (ARA) - Whether by the pool, in the park, or on vacation, warm weather ushers in a season of constant activity. Keeping the family energized during the summer months is important. These easy steps will help make wholesome summertime snacking simple and interesting, no matter the time or place. A family affair Involve others and get creative by transforming everyday trips to the supermarket into fun, unexpected adventures. Turn navigating the snack aisle into an interesting scavenger hunt. Provide children with clues to locate the healthy foods on your shopping list. This is a great way to include children in the weekly shopping and gives them an active role in making smart food choices at a young age. Select a variety of products and offer healthy alternatives. Travel guide A surprise snack can help keep travel companions happy during a summer afternoon of errands or a lengthy road trip. This will also help reduce unexpected spending during pit stops. Consider storing a few better-for-you, nonperishable snacks -- like mixed nuts or pretzels -- in reusable containers that can be quickly grabbed on the go. Buy family favorites in bulk and create your own single-serving portions to save money.
Rethink the basics Add a bit of wholesome pizzazz to snacking with a multi-grain cracker. Made with a blend of eight quality whole grains combined with a touch of real honey, the authentic taste and texture of new Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals Multi-grain Wheat Crisps are sure to delight. “The beauty of multigrain foods is that the variety of ingredients makes them a versatile foundation for healthful, flavorful snacking every day,” says celebrity natural food chef Bethenny Frankel. “I love that with Baked Naturals you can enjoy something wholesome and satisfying without compromising taste or quality.” Drink up Hot summer days can increase the body’s need for fluids. Schedule drink breaks into your daily routine and consider adding unexpected flavor to plain water with citrus slices or ice cubes containing berries. Invest in reusable water bottles, some of which have built-in filtration systems, for on the go drinks without waste. Serve chilled vegetables and fruit containing natural liquids for a snack that is nourishing and refreshing. Planning ahead each week and knowing how to build healthful snacks into any schedule can help families develop smart snacking habits year-round.

Local diamond a rare find
By Rebecca Kerta
Being a local and running a local business means I get to meet some truly amazing local people and I have to say that after the following interview I realized just how awesome the local residents of North Brisbane are! I caught up with Albany Hair Directions owner, Rachel Blacker for a coffee. Albany Hair Directions is located at 23/720 Albany Creek Rd, Albany Creek or call on 326443111 RK: So Rachel, when did you realize that you wanted hairdressing to be your career?
RK: What has been the most significant moment in your career so far?
RB: When I was about 14 I used to love the smell of a hair salon and thought it was the most glamorous job. It was the 80’s and we all wanted cool hair to like Madonna or Bananarama! My opportunity came when I started working for a family friend. It was four hours every Saturday and as chaotic and busy it was I knew that it was where I wanted to spend my future.
RB: Winning a hair competition is exciting, finishing a 4 yr apprenticeship is great, but it would have to be being mentored by the best in the business on how to run a successful salon. The most important thing I learned was that I was a gutless product seller. Now I know that when a customer says no to a product that it’s okay but to stop selling to the rest of my clients who need my guidance and expertise on how to maintain the style and condition of their hair was letting them down, now I’m the number one retailer of our product in the state!
RK: What qualifications do you hold? RB: I completed yr 12 and a 4 yr apprenticeship and then completed as many certificates as I could to enable me to be a top level stylist. I started competing in hair competitions to really push my limits and this taught me my most valuable lesson, you do not have to be in inner city salons to be the best at your craft you just need passion and dedication! RK: What vibe do you want your clients to experience when they visit you? RB: The staff at the salon are all different ages and at different stages of their careers, some are experts in their fields and some are at the start of their journeys, this adds a great dynamic in the salon as every client will relate to one of us. Our mission is to give you great hair health but, while were doing that we want you to be involved in all our conversations of life, love and goings on in the world. We look forward to our clients insights and stories, but, it always come back to the health of your hair. Treatments, treatments, treatments!
RK: What personal goals have you still to achieve? RB: I dream of putting together a magazine of our work in the salon. I visualize using local people that we have made over with new colors, cuts and makeup and I want it to be solely produced by local businesses e.g. photographers, fashion labels, models. We could even make it a platform for local aspiring models! RK: Who do you think has been your biggest inspiration in life? RB: In my profession those who have strived to be the best they can and have succeeded are always inspirational, but in life I would have to say my husband. He has had many successes in his life but has always stayed grounded and true; he keeps me on my toes and has taught me that we all have challenges in life. His determination, strength, wisdom and patience should be inspiration to us all.
Swapping to beat recession By Phillipa Hogg Are you sick of looking into your wardrobe and feeling like you have nothing to wear? Or not being able to justify a new outfit for Saturday night? Well I have a great solution for you; a Clothes Swap Party! What does it involve; its simple really, invite some girlfriends around and get them to bring some clothes they don’t wear anymore! We aren’t talking clothes that should be headed for the bin but clothes, Balanced Magazine
accessories, and shoes that are still in good condition that you simply don’t want to wear anymore – remember one man’s trash is another’s treasure. A glass or two of champagne, some finger food and lots of giggling ensures a great night and new wardrobe; you never know you may walk away with not only a new outfit but a new lease on life! They say a change is as good as a holiday; and this change is certainly wallet happy. Happy Swapping!

Aussie Scientists Indentify Genes that Cause Melanoma Scientists from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) have found two new genes that together double a person’s risk of developing melanoma. As part of an international study, a team at QIMR, led by Professors Nick Hayward and Grant Montgomery, studied the genes of almost 6,000 people together with their mole count. Specific changes in two genes were found to make people more susceptible to developing moles. The researchers went on to show, in another 4,000 people, the same two genes increased the risk of developing melanoma – the most deadly form of skin cancer. “These are the first genes found to increase melanoma risk by influencing the number of moles a person has,” explained Professor Hayward. “It has long been known that having a large number of moles is the biggest risk factor. Therefore we predicted we would find genes linking moles and melanoma. We now have conclusive genetic evidence that having a large number of moles increases an individual’s risk of
developing melanoma.” The study found that people who carry one of these two gene variants have a 25% increased chance of developing melanoma, while for individuals carrying both variants their risk is doubled. Moles are normal but people should seek advice from their doctor if they observe any changes in size, colour or shape. People with lots of moles are at a higher risk of developing melanoma and should therefore take extra care to avoid overexposure to ultraviolet radiation. Australia has the highest incidence of melanoma in the world with more than 10,000 new cases and 1000 people dying from the disease every year. Queensland has the highest incidence of any state with seven Queenslanders diagnosed with melanoma every day. More than one in 20 Queenslanders is expected to develop melanoma during their lifetime.

Mercury re-enters your zone of work environment around the 18th and you have to separate the allies from enemies and the important from the insignificant this month. Hard work is necessary up until the new Moon of the 19th when the quick change in your daily office routine will bring greater productivity for you.
Working on health and dietary issues will be important to you this month. By the 19th you’ll have in place a whole new schedule which will encompass your daily exercise, diet and possibly an alteration to the way you conduct appointments and meetings to make the best use of your time. Efficiency will be high on your agenda
The full Moon occurs in your zone of work and indicates fulfilment of your career objectives. If you’re not in the right line of work personal ambitions might be obstructed and you’ll feel pretty frustrated throughout the period up until the 5th. You need to set your sights on goals that are realistic as well just now and mustn’t let other parts of your life distract you from the true key to understanding.

The new Moon on the 18th occurs at a time when the Sun is approaching a conjunction with Saturn. Additional responsibilities will be offered to you. Don’t be afraid to take up the challenge as you will learn a great deal about yourself and others this month. By jumping into the deep end you’ll quickly learn how to swim.
On the 25th and 26th, the power of the Sun, Saturn, Moon and Pluto will drive this point home. If you are ill prepared for some new project or a change of direction in your company for personal independent business, you may be putting in far more hours than you would like, hence the added importance of health and dietary management this month.
Speculation needs to be carefully monitored between the 19th and 25th if you’re thinking is unclear or you may have a bee in your bonnet and want to prove a point. This is not an intelligent way to spend your money and you’re better to hold off and do some paper trading if the stock market seems appealing. Remember this is still a glorified form of gambling.

To overcome lethargy or boredom, you may opt to do something extravagant around the 11th. Spending big or partying hard might seem like an escape route but this is only a temporary measure and you will still be left with issues staring you in the face. This month is about dealing with your problems head-on and not being too discouraged.
After the 7th express your deepest feelings as openly as you can and don’t be afraid to bring out the hidden parts of your relationships, those aspects you’ve tried so hard to bury for so many years. It will be tough to disclose how you truly feel about someone but by doing so a whole new level of trust will develop in your life and you can advance with a clear conscience
If you’re good at your job and it’s quite likely that this is the case, others will be looking to offload their surplus work on you so that they are the ones who have an easy ride. If you become too sensitive about saying no to their requests, you’ll be the one regretting long hours and tedious work deadlines for not speaking up. Between the 2nd and the 11th these planetary demands become more intense, that’s for sure.

During this phase and especially from the 15th until the 20th you’ll be struggling with the idea of changing your old patterns, developing new skills and eliminating those practices which have not worked you all that well. Old habits die hard so although you recognize the need to change, it will not necessarily be all that easy. Start with small steps before making radical changes to your lifestyle.

Between the 12th and the 18th powerful forces impact upon you and you feel drawn to different people in your life. Philosophy, yoga and other spiritual practices which you may have only superficially been interested in previously, become more relevant to your life.
