Stop Aging with Antioxidants Every day we are exposed to air pollution, sunlight, smoke and more all which give rise to the production of "free radicals". Damage to our DNA, protein (collagen & elastin) and protein remodeling (skin healing) are all side effects of the production of free radicals. Internally the metabolism, the effects of stress and emotions and the result of everyday body process that utilize oxygen all create free radicals. Externally ultraviolet light from the sun and environmental stressors such as smoking, pollution, poor dietary habits and chemical exposure also contribute. The production of free radicals and the damage they cause is one of the key mechanisms of aging. As one ages, the skin’s structural foundation weakens. Specifically, collagen which keeps the skin firm and elastin which maintains elasticity and helps prevent the skin from sagging. Free radicals attack your skin's collagen and elastin layers, accelerating the creation of fine lines and wrinkles.
Skin-aging caused by free radicals occurs over time however, the damaging effect of free radicals is exacerbated in the presence of an antioxidant deficiency which can accelerate this process considerably. Consider for example the skin of a smoker aged 40 years compared to a non-smoker. In this case, the antioxidant defenses of the skin are far outweighed by the production of free radicals as a byproduct of the daily cigarette habit. Much research has been done with regard to the benefits of antioxidants to combat the production of free radicals. Antioxidants neutralize the free radicals that harm the cells, causing damage and premature aging. Specifically antioxidants help to maintain the health of the skin cells such as collagen and elastin which keeps skin supple. There are two ways to slow the effects of free radical damage on the skin:
Reduce the production of free radicals. You can’t really do much about reducing free radical product that is the byproduct of everyday bodily processes however you can reduce your exposure to the environmental factors such as ultraviolet rays, pollution, chemicals and poor dietary habits. So the key advice such as minimizing exposure to midday sun and giving up smoking apply here. Improve your antioxidant status. The neutralizing effects of antioxidants don’t prevent the effects of free radical damage however ensuring that your antioxidant status is optimal will certainly slow skin aging. Antioxidants can be increased internally and topically by >>>>>>>>>>
Whether in our diet, as supplements or topically applied, antioxidant play an important role in slowing down the aging process. Of course to get the best effect it is important to consider all three delivery methods. In addition, minimising your exposure to the environmental factors that cause free radical production, will significantly add to slowing the aging process, not just of your skin, but of your whole body.
Eating plenty of antioxidant rich foods – colourful fruit, vegetables and wholegrains are excellent sources of antioxidants. Key antioxidant rich foods for the skin include mangosteen, turmeric, green tea and berries of any kind.
Antioxidant Supplementation - specifically vitamins C and E, as well as lipoic acid and flavonoids (green tea and grapeseed), exert protective effect against oxidative stress in the skin and help protect the skin from damage caused by the sun. Lycopene, lutein, and zeaxanthin as a specific subset of carotenoids may also be used as oral sun protectants and contribute to the maintenance of skin health.
Topical antioxidants - provide some protection against environmental damage to the skin and may help slow down skin aging. However, the effectiveness of topical antioxidants depends on a number of factors including skin permeability, the concentration of the antioxidant and the other ingredients in the cream and whether they are water or fat soluble among other things. Also keep in mind that just because an ingredient is an antioxidant, doesn’t mean that it will be effective for slowing skin aging and indeed that different antioxidants have different effects on the skin. Some of the more effective topical antioxidants that have been researched thus far include: Vitamin C – supports and stimulates collagen synthesis and reduces free radical damage
Vitamin E – assists with skin healing, protects cellular membranes which helps maintain the health of the skin cell
Green tea – reduces erythema and the effects of ultraviolet radiation, anti-inflammatory effects. Betacarotene & Carotenes – helps minimise sun damage Vitamin A (as retinoic acid) - increase synthesis of collagen, reducing fine wrinkles, improve skin texture and increase skin thickness Coenzyme Q10 - improving the cells ability to produce new collagen. It also increases the ability of the cell to minimise damage from free radical production. Lipoic acid - inhibit cross-linking which contributes to the ageing process

Rate Hikes Hinder Borrowers As Banks Impose Hurdles Mortgage applications rejected placing consumers’ good credit ratings at risk Higher mortgage repayments are not the only casualty in the Reserve Bank’s quest to bring interest rates back to the more “normal” levels experienced prior to the Global Financial Crisis. Its latest move on May 4, raising the official cash rate 0.25 per cent to 4.5 per cent, will make it harder for ordinary Australians to get a home loan as banks and lenders continue to tighten lending criteria. Aussie’s CEO Stephen Porges said the scarcity of money available to lend to borrowers, which is sourced from global credit markets and is now priced considerably higher than it was a few years ago, means banks are being selective as to who they lend money to. “The banks don’t have as much money to lend as the global credit markets haven’t opened up as much as they would like, so they can afford to be selective when taking on new home loan customers. “In effect, they’re cherry-picking potential customers with the best capacity to repay debt and are imposing hurdles on the others,” he said. Local Aussie franchisee (insert store and name) said unfortunately, the majority of borrowers are unaware of these hurdles – which vary from bank to bank, and as a result their applications are rejected through no real fault of their own.
“Being rejected for a loan could adversely affect their credit rating, and in turn this could also affect them the next time they go to a financial institution to borrow money.” (Insert name) said using a mortgage broker for their home loan needs could be the solution as they deal with most of the banks and are well versed in the necessary requirements when lodging a loan application. “As brokers, we deal with the banks constantly and are fully aware of what each of them require in regards to a home loan,” he/she said. “Using a broker to navigate any of the potential hurdles could be the difference between getting approval, and in turn, their dream home or conversely, rejected and having a black mark on their credit rating.” As one of the country’s largest non-bank providers of financial services, Aussie has a loan book of more than $36 billion. With the acquisition of Wizard, there are now over 150 retail shopfronts and more than 850 brokers across the country ready to help customers get a better deal on their finances. An Aussie broker will offer guidance, assess eligibility, lodge the application and then support the first home buyer borrower through the home loan process. Aussie brokers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in all capital cities and regional centres at the request of customers who call Aussie on 13 13 33.

Repairing more than your
Credit
Graham Doessel knows all about the challenges of being in debt, when a former business partner of his turned out to be misappropriating funds, Graham sought legal advice on the best course of action, unfortunately, as Graham puts it in his own words, his “legal advice was narrow minded and Graham was directed to go bankrupt”, which he did. Little did he know the full range of options open to him. Since that day Graham has sought to establish more businesses, this time based on the principle of helping people who for one reason or another have fallen into debt and can see no way out.
Graham, through his business MyCRA is helping people who have poor credit history. MyCRA reviews your Credit File and determines how they can help repair your credit file to give you the best opportunity to be accepted by credit providers. If you make any application for finance, being loans, credit cards, mortgages, etc. your credit file is likely to be checked by the finance company or lender to verify you meet their lending conditions. MyCRA has a 92% success rate in repairing Credit Files with more than 80.5% of all defaults being permanently removed and has over 30 years combined experience in helping clients with their credit files. “This business has given me a great opportunity to help others in more ways than one, having felt the effects of a poor credit file myself, I know exactly what our clients are going through” said Graham He continued “ Credit File Repairs are just one of the many services that my businesses do in order to help people alleviate that feeling of hopelessness and get their lives back on track” It was recently reported that 2007 saw in excess of 87,000 Queenslanders fall victim of Identity Theft. These numbers are alarming. It is little wonder Choice conducted independent research showing that of the more that 14,700,000 credit files in Australia, approx 30% had defaults and of those, over 1,300,000 could have mistakes. Graham Doessel and his team are available during working hours to help you get a copy of you credit history and discuss with you the best way to remove defaults and repair a bad credit history. Contact MyCRA at www.mycra. com.au or call 1300 667 218. Also visit Graham’s blog at www.grahamdoessel.com.au to get worthwhile tips and information on finance and security.

Are you Living Savvy? Jo Bassett believes in living savvy every day, meaning she’s always looking for ways to fine tune her life to live a little more extraordinary. That doesn’t mean she gets it right all the time, but she believes in celebrating what has been achieved and becoming aware and committing to the small adjustments that make a big difference. With a professional background in Occupational Therapy, a Masters Degree, PhD research underway and accreditation with the International Coaching Federation, Jo has created the Living Savvy multimedia program to encourage sustainable personal development and evolution. It’s not about overhauling your life or fixing something that is ‘broken’. Living savvy is about making small changes to your daily life, your habits and your mindset to produce amazing results – fine-tuning the ordinary to live extraordinary.
At www.livingsavvy.com.au you can share ideas and information, ask questions and be inspired to find your own answers to the big questions in life: What am I creating? Who completes me? How do I show up? How do I want to be remembered? It’s a personal development program that is entertaining, relatable and practical. What are the Key elements of your business?
Living Savvy (www.livingsavvy.com.au) is an online community, where women who aspire to achieve more, who want to make a difference to the world in which they live, come together to share ideas, ask questions and be inspired. The Living Savvy website includes my blog, with practical information and personal stories, a forum andO’Shea Living Savvy videos where we follow real Troy women on the living savvy journey www.youtube.com/ livingsavvy. How do you get Started?
I created Living Savvy after talking with so many women during my time as a facilitator, therapist and coach.
Through my experience I have found that with small, simple changes these women can achieve extraordinary results – I like to describe this as fine turning the ordinary to live extraordinary. What do you hope to achieve with Living Savvy?
My passion in life is helping people to live a life that is full and connected, not busy, juggled and stressed. We all want information that is entertaining, relatable and practical. This is what Living Savvy is all about. How do you define Success?
Success is not defined by the what but the how. I feel successful on the days that I have truly lived savvy. When

I have connected with others, asked questions and thought about the answers, made conscious decisions, savoured those special (and simple) moments that happen every day, and made small changes to live a little more extraordinary. Did you ever think you would be doing what you are today?
I don’t have too many fixed goals but rather broad themes that I’m exploring at any given stage in my life. It works for me because it allows me to focus on what’s most important, whilst also having the flexibility to chase new ideas and opportunities. I have always utilised my qualifications and experience, beyond the usual paths taken by those with my background. I love a good story and l believe that women learn through sharing stories and experiences so what I am doing now weaves together my professional background, experience, love for storytelling and passion for helping others. What or who inspires you?
I’m inspired by people’s stories. Story telling is a magical gateway through which we can connect with others. Through stories I connect with the story teller and have the opportunity to glimpse the world through another’s eyes. Importantly, I also connect with myself and have the opportunity to examine
my own feelings, judgements and perceptions. Here are links to a few of my favourites: Talking Heads (transcript archives) Australian Story (video and transcript archives) Street Stories now 360 (podcast) Conversations with Richard Fidler (podcast) Radio National Breakfast (podcast)
What was the best advice you ever received? and from whom did you receive it?
You don’t have to achieve everything by the time you are forty. I took this pearl of wisdom away from a women I spoke with at a conference who was is her fifties, had completed her PHD, and had a fantastic reputation in her area of speciality. What motto do you live by?
A vision without action is a dream. Action without vision is nonsense. A vision with action can change the world.

Does Detox Work? They are all over the radio, magazines, television and blogs. Detox diets; and the camps are very definitely divided. People either love or hate the concept of detoxing BUT, does it work?
Personally I think the strangest perception of detox diets is that they are a new phenomenon when in fact detoxing has been around since Biblical times. Detoxing is used to purify the body of all the toxins it has absorbed over its lifetime. When we are in good health it’s a sign our body has adapted to our particular lifestyle and environment; that we’re in-sync with nature’s rhythms and that our personal system has reached a state of balance. When we’re feeling ill or out of sorts, our body is sending us a signal that we’ve lost the balance; that we’ve fallen out of step with natures cycle, both inside and outside. click here to subscribe FREE - JUNE 10 - www.balancedmedia.com.au - balanced online magazine- 14
Some Popular Detox Options
The Colon Cleanse $275.00. Using a complex blend of herbs that are certified organic. The detox consists of 2 phases, the first, or the Internal Cleanse, which lasts 21 days, and the second, which is called the Colon Cleanse, which lasts 8 days. So the total time required for the cleanse is 29 days.
The Lemon Detox Diet $110.00. A very well known detox plan thanks to it’s variety of famous followers including Beyonce, Victoria Beckham and Tania Zaetta.
Fasting $0. Sounds dramatic I know, but we actually fast every night when we sleep. We wake in the morning with a coated tongue, smelly breath, puffy eyes and foggy mind, all signs of a good detox! Then we eat “break” “fast”. Extending this period of not eating for even three days will leave the body cleaner and mind clearer.
Far Infrared Light Detox - The use of far infrared lights to stimulate a detoxing process in the body is a relatively new treatment. The lights encourage a strong natural detox and are most commonly used in infrared saunas amd thermal theraputic massage beds. The benefits are immediate and the tratments affordable and relaxing.
Detoxing and cleansing is a way to reset our personal system and help our body regain its balance. Using herbal formulas, diet changes or fasting we help the body to expel accumulated waste and toxins and to encourage our own self-cleansing mechanisms to work better and more efficiently. There are many Detox kits being sold in Australia, some of the more well know would be the Lemon Detox Diet, the 48hour Rapid Detox and the 7 Day Detox. These products contain a herbal formulation that mixes to a drink and replaces all other food during the Detox period. Many medical professionals abhor these products and do not sanction their use, but they have a strong following by those who believe if used properly detoxing leaves the body refreshed, cleansed and functioning more efficiently.
the Detox kits as a “quick fix” but it’s highly likely they will regain this weight if they don’t educate themselves on what nutrition is required to achieve and maintain a healthy weight range. Most of the outlets that sell these detox products will also stock a range of solutions for effective weight loss including supplements, nutritional advice and publications.
A “Do-It-Yourself Detox needs some preparation beforehand to research the best produce and methods to use, to prepare mentally for the challenge ahead and to plan meals and shopping lists. D.I.Y detoxing involves only eating raw, clean foods and drinking lots of pure water. Eliminating alcohol, drugs, cigarettes and coffee is paramount. Some detox super foods are cabbage, pak choi, broccoli, brussel sprouts, garlic, onions, peppers, artichokes, asparagus, beetroot, pumpkin, sunflower and sesame seeds, oranges, The pros of pre-packaged detox kits are convenience lemons, limes and of course lots and lots of water! for the consumer, clear instructions to follow and on line support if required, the cons are lack of nutritional Those who detox regularly claim to benefit from education. The kits contain a pre-mixed formulation, increased energy, clear skin, better immunity and the consumer doesn’t have to research foods or their the ability to maintain a healthy weight, all positive nutritional value. My personal downside of detox kits reasons to try a detox yourself, just make sure you do is that they are marketed as a weight loss product, your research and select the best detox plan for you. therefore people struggling with their weight buy Happy cleansing!

Research shows that more than 75% of people who set New Years resolutions will break them within 3 months and almost 1/3 will not make it to the end of January! Here are 5 tips to help you achieve your goals in 2010. 1. Be Speciic Resolutions that are not speciic are bound to fail. This is because psychologically, being speciic means there is no wiggle room, so the objective is clear-cut. For instance, instead of saying you would like to lose weight in the next year, change that to “I will lose 10 pounds before the end of the next year”. This level of detail makes it
Marty
Highlights
more dificult to convince ourselves that we are really working towards our goal of weight loss because it is well deined.
2. Step by Step If you’re getting a little overwhelmed by the big picture of your goal breaking it down into clear, achievable steps can make your sticking to your resolution so much more do-able. Make a list of each step and a date to achieve them and tick them off as you make progress.
3. Get a Buddy If you ind self-motivation alone is not enough to keep you on track then enlisting the support of a friend who wants to achieve the same goals can boost your chances of success. You can trade notes on your progress, discuss emotions and experiences and help each other overcome obstacles. Making it a plan to connect, virtually or face to face, with a buddy who shares your resolution greatly increases your odds of achieving your goal.

TiaCarrigan What was your first exposure to fashion and design? My Mum has always sewn and so I’ve grown up around machines, fabrics and dressmaking dollies. It wasn’t until I had completed my first year of a commerce degree that I knew that I was meant to persue my passion for creativity and fashion seemed like the natural outlet after my years growing up with it. Where does your inspiration comes from? My inspiration comes in all forms, whether it is a complex topic like psychological testing mechanisms, or the simplicity of naturally occurring patterns in everyday life. I try to explore issues and ideas that are relevant to my life now, interpreting them through prints, designs and styling. How do you get started on your own designs? My concept and inspiration combined with my knowledge of the women who will wear my designs, gives me the basis to start designing.
What do you hope to achieve with your collections? My aim is to provide women with a versatile, vibrant and stylish product while challenging myself creatively. How do you define Success? When I feel that I have challenged myself creatively and the resulting designs are a direct reflection of this, I feel successful as a designer. To know that my customers feel confident in
themselves when they wear my designs is a huge compliment and an outward indicator of my success.
Did you ever think you would be doing what you are today? I try to develop goals for myself to help determine where I want to be in the future, but I find that alot of where I am today is due to following my instincts and trusting that it will all work out for the best.
What is your view on the local fashion industry? I have found that the local Brisbane fashion industry is a very supportive and close-knit community which supports its emerging designers and encourages open lines of communication between both fashion representatives and also other creative industries. This local sharing of industry knowledge and contacts highlights the confident and supportive nature of our local industry as well as the strong foundations being built for the future its future. What was the best advice you ever received? and from whom did you receive it? “Trust your instincts and don’t listen to anyone else; if you succeed, it’ll be on your own merits.” Donna Condon, a mentor who I completed work experience for during my studies. She gave me invaluable insight into how to stay true to my own creativity and how to laugh when all you want to do is cry!

Balance means not bringing work home with me and maintaining a social life...I’ve yet to achieve this!
Keeping myself calm, healthy and happy. With the potential for a ridiculous schedule due to the demands that work could place on me, I have to be careful to establish and stick to boundaries. If the balance is good, I stay well and have a fabulous mixture of hard work and great rewards.

To help people live his top rating television show “ Downsize Me”, watched a healthy life is great, to help your own family thrive is in 136 countries. Based on his ethos of getting people to something to cherish. eat healthier and smaller food portions, “Downsize Me” showcases Damian’s outlook and his natural appeal as 6. How do you define Success? both a TV personality and health practitioner. Success for me encompasses a number of things. For me We sat down will Damian to find out what drives his pas- essentially success is happiness, so I am happiest when I have time on my hands to spend with those that are sion around me. 1. What do you hope to achieve with WBC? The dream with WBC is to raise people’s awareness of the food that they eat. Often people have unconscious eating behaviours that over their food based decision making, as a result, people choose to eat based on flavours rather than benefit. The goal with WBC is achieve flavour and benefit.
2. Who/what has been your biggest influence? My biggest personal influence was my mum. She always ensured that we ate well, and with the knowledge that she had, she prepared fresh meals for us every day. Unfortunately many people don’t have a mum like mine, so I am inspired now by other peoples stories to help improve food and health spending behaviour. The realisation that energy is not just calories is a massive influence, so understanding the realms of quantum physics helps understand that there is energy that cant be measured present in fresh produce. 3. What is your “feel good” ritual? Wake 5am go for a ride, come home eat breaky with the family and have a veggie juice, take time through the day to read and walk in a park, eat great food all day and then relax with the family in the evening talking about the day that we just experienced.
7. What are you most passionate about? Food and well being is my passion. Without great food, we are stuck. Dis-ease is the cause of ill-health and infirmary. Eating great food and maintaining a healthy nervous system is the best way to be the best you can be. 8. What would your friends say is your best trait? Honesty
9. What are some of the greatest challenges you face in your profession? People who know not enough and just a little about food and nutrition cause the most heart ache in our profession. Out dated models of food based information such as the food pyramid is the most frustrating thing. 10. What is your best advice for people who are looking to live a healthy life? Start with the simplest of things. Start eating a great breakfast and exercising every day. As you make better decisions with breakfast, you will make better decisions with Lunch and Dinner. When you focus is on the health outcome, the process of getting healthy becomes clear. 11. What motto do you live by? The power that made the body heals the body

(Nancy Gulick) I felt fatigued before jumping on the Migun massage bed. The bed gave me a spurt of energy that i havent felt in a long time........ I had a pain in my right shoulder which travelled down my right side down to my buttocks/tailbone before I started on the bed, now I dont have it anymore, after only 1 month on the bed, I have been carrying that pain around for nearly 4 years. I’m even sleeping better, i have a pool at home but didnt get into it for about a year, a lot of my muscles had gone dorment, the bed have stimulated those muscles. I love the Bed!
When I began using the Migun bed last September my blood sugar level was 160 and today it is 90, welcome change for someone with diabetes, but not only that i have lost 20 pounds. Thankyou very much for this health boost. It Works for me (Pat Malone) I started using Migun purely for relaxation which was enough to encourage me to purchase multiple 10 session passes. I then found however that my chronically sore back which incapacitated me 3-4 times a year, no longer did so. Whether it is the relaxation process or the manipulation of the muscles and spine that gives relief is unknown, but it works for me

JAYME PARIS “THERE IS NO SUCH WORD AS CANT” Life started a little differently for Jayme Paris. After a near perfect pregnancy in which she only gained 500 grams, Jayme’s mums uterus ruptured, nearly killing them both. The doctors managed to save both mother and daughter after initially asking Jayme’s dad to choose who to save. However a part of Jayme’s brain never regenerated leaving her with Epilepsy, Cerebellar Ataxia ( a form of Cerebral Palsy) and Gross Motor Retardation. After such a harowing beginning to life, Jayme Paris has never looked back and with a life motto like “There is no such word as cant” the future is endless for this Paralympic Medalist.
A call to Wales kick starts Jayme’s morning, wakeing up her fiance Ashley and updating him on their three babies (bearded dragons) that live with Jayme in Australia. Allowed to attempt anything by her parents Jayme’s love for sport came from her Year 4 teacher and eventually Clair McLean who introduced Jayme to Paracycling.
Understanding what motivates Jayme is a big indication on the phenomenal rise in her cycling from
her introduction in 2004 to winning a Paralympic medal in 2008.
‘“Motivation to get up in the morning is the fact that I can get up in the morning which is more than mum & dad were told I would do when I was born. So to prove the doctors wrong is a great motivation!” Says Jayme Cycling may not have been the obvious choice, but loving a challenge and with the help of some world class coaching from Cycling Australia’s Tom Skulander, Jayme passed on a promising swimming talent to focus wholely on her cycling dream.
“The greatest challenge I face in Cycling is staying upright because with Cerebellar Ataxia Gross Motor Retardation I shake a lot and there is always the chance that I’ll shake at a crucial time and hit the deck.” Although cycling success for Jayme has come early in her career, Jayme defines success not in terms of gold medals but in inspiration. “I would define success as the number of people’s lives you have enriched and made a difference to” says Jayme.

continuing, “ I am passionate about helping other people with disabilities and getting kid’s involved in sport as well as educating people about the Paralympics. That is why I am honoured to be an Ambassador for Northcott Disability Services who help so many people including myself to live a full and inclusive life”
Jayme attributes much of her success and grounding from her time spent at Northcott Disability Services, a non-for-profit organisation supporting over 8,000 people with a broad range of disabilities, their families and carers across NSW and the ACT whilst promoting a genuinely inclusive society. Educating the wider community on the impact and effect of disabilities is a driving passion for Jayme, conceding.
“I think that people could better help and understand people with CP by just asking them about their disability because although we may look slow our brains work just as well if not better than people without CP intellectually it’s just our body doesn’t work properly”
After her success in Beijing, Jayme is not going to rest on her lorals with her sight now firmly set on 2012 London Paralympic Games in an attempt to capture the Gold Medal. Given her friends say that her best trait is that she will never give up no matter what, I wouldnt bet against Jayme to win Australia its next paralympic Gold Medal.

Resolutions Dead? Research shows that more than 75% of people who set New Years resolutions will break them within 3 months and almost 1/3 will not make it to the end of January! Here are 5 tips to help you achieve your goals in 2010.
1. Be Specific Resolutions that are not specific are bound to fail. This is because psychologically, being specific means there is no wiggle room, so the objective is clear-cut. For instance, instead of saying you would like to lose weight in the next year, change that to “I will lose 5 kilos before the end of the next year”. This level of detail makes it more difficult to convince ourselves that we are really working towards our goal of weight loss because it is well defined. 2. Step by Step If you’re getting a little overwhelmed by the big picture of your goal breaking it down into clear, achievable steps can make your sticking to your resolution so much more achievable. Make a list of each step and a date to achieve them and tick them off as you make progress.
3. Visualise Success This technique can be used for all goals, create a clear mental picture of want you want, be it to quit smoking, lose weight, learn to surf. If your New Years resolution is to loose weight then sticking pictures of yourself around your house, either at your current weight or an old picture of you at a healthier weight, will keep you
goal driven even when you feel lazy or your sweet tooth is acting up! If you goal is to finally learn to play your guitar positioning your instrument in a position where you practically trip over it each morning registers your goal and keeps in on your mental radar all the time, this has a profound impact on your ability to follow through. 4. Spread the Word Involving family or friends in your plans makes you accountable to someone other than yourself. Imagine telling your whole family of your goal then when December rolls around your still smoking, working in a job you hate or carrying those extra kilos? Increasing your accountability factor and adding social pressure and expectations from people you see all the time is a huge motivator to actually achieving your goal.
5. Get a Buddy If you find self-motivation alone is not enough to keep you on track then enlisting the support of a friend who wants to achieve the same goals can boost your chances of success. You can trade notes on your progress, discuss emotions and experiences and help each other overcome obstacles. Making it a plan to connect, virtually or face to face, with a buddy who shares your resolution is a great incentive to achieve your goals.

The A,B,C of Vitamins Vitamin A Vitamin A’s main function is to help form and maintain healthy teeth, bones, soft tissues and skin. Vitamin A is also known as retinol because it produces the pigments in the retina of the eyes giving them their colour. Vitamin A promotes good vision, especially in low light, and is necessary for reproduction and breast feeding functions. Vitamin A is found in nearly all animal sources such as eggs, meat, milk, cheese, cream, cod and fish oil. The high cholesterol and high fat content of these foods mean some people don’t get enough so our bodies have compensated by being able to turn Beta-Carotene, a member of the powerful carotene family, into a form of Vitamin A. Foods high in Beta-carotene include carrots, pumpkin, apricots, broccoli, spinach and sweet potatoes. Almost all foods with a strong natural colour contain beta-carotene.
Medicine recommend the following daily intake; Male Adults- 900mcg/day Female Adults 700mcg/day Vitamin B Our bodies require 13 vitamins to maintain optimum health, 8 of these make up the B group of vitamins. The B group vitamins are Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B6, Folate and Vitamin B12. B group vitamins are essential for our metabolic processes such as energy production and red blood synthesis. The body has a limited capacity to store most of the B group vitamins so adequate amounts must be consumed through a nutritious diet. Ensuring your diet is high in grains, legumes, green vegetables, fish and shellfish, meat, nuts, eggs, cheese and mushrooms means you should be ingesting a sufficient quantity of all of the B group vitamins. A deficiency in any of the B vitamins can have serious negative health effects ranging from anemia, tiredness, insomnia to severe Niacin deficiency which can be fatal. Excessive alcohol consumption reduces our ability to absorb B group vitamins. Food processing removes nearly all of B vitamins from food so wholegrain and whole meal foods are much more nutritious than their white counterparts. The Food and Nutrition Board and the Institute of

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is required for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of our bodies. Vitamin C is essential for the healing of wounds, repair and maintenance of cartilage, bones and teeth. Vitamin C is a great source of antioxidants, nutrients that block some of the damage caused by free-radicals which are by products resulting from our bodies’ conversion of food into energy. The build of these by products is largely responsible for the ageing process and can contribute to the development of conditions such as cancer, heart disease and arthritis. The body does not manufacture Vitamin c on its own, nor does it have the ability to store it, it is therefore vital to include plenty of foods rich in Vitamin C in our daily diet. All fruits and vegetables contain some Vitamin C, the foods with the highest concentration include green peppers, citrus fruits and juices, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, turnip greens and other leafy green vegetables, sweet and white potatoes and rock melon. Other great
sources are papaya, mango, cabbage, raspberries, blueberries and pineapple.
Those not consuming enough Vitamin C risk suffering from dry and splitting hair, gingivitis, bleeding gums, rough and dry skin, bruising easily, nosebleeds, weakened tooth enamel, painful joints, anemia and possible weight gain due to slowed metabolism. The Food and Nutrition Board and the Institute of Medicine recommend the following daily intake; Adult Males Female Adults

Self diagnosing a deficiency in any vitamin can be very dangerous so if you feel you are not getting an adequate intake of vitamins in your diet or think you may have the symptoms of a deficiency visit your doctor or nutritionist for advice.

How Exercise can lower blood sugar levels periods of lower intensity. Some exercises naturally involve interval training, such as tennis, dancing, surfing, cycling outdoors, team sports and walking in a hilly area, and so are good for long-term programs. Studies have also shown that high intensity exercise can aid in losing extra kilos. Diet tends to lower blood sugar levels over a longer period of time. Choose good fats (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated), slow release (low GI) carbohydrates which break down slowly and keep blood sugar levels fairly constant and balance animal protein (nuts, seeds and legumes). Examples of high intensity exercise include walking up a hill or up a flight of stairs quickly, jogging or running, riding a bike up a hill and lifting weights, but these activities can be exhausting to keep up for an entire exercise session, so try interval training. Interval training means working at a higher intensity for short periods of time, spaced out across the whole exercise session. These short bursts of high intensity exercise have been shown to greatly increase insulin sensitivity, which is of great benefit to a diabetic. However, those with high blood pressure, unstable angina, heart failure, aneurysm or who are pregnant should not participate in high intensity exercise. As a diabetic gets fitter, their periods of high intensity exercise can be increased, while shortening the
Nutrition For Kids Making sure your kids get a nutritionally balanced diet is vital to their development and health. Getting the right balance between good eating habits, good nutrition and delicious food can be tricky, so we have come up with some basic tips to get them eating great food and loving it! Building a great family culture around food provides lots of opportunities for familes to spend quality time together planning, preparing and enjoying meals, get your kids excited about meal times by; Having regular family meals – even if your schedules mean it’s only twice a week that you can all sit down together everyone will look forward to it with anticipation and the family can share their news and enjoy togetherness.
Breakfast Food Plan
Sultana Bran Cereal WHY: high in fibre to keep kids fuller for longer aswell as being low in sugar and salt Fresh Fruit & Yoghurt WHY: Low Sugar, no additives and great source of vitamins, plus dairy is great for growing bones Wholemeal Toast with Peanut Butter WHY: Wholegrain foods are full of low GI carbohydrates which powers the brain, peanut butter provides good fats and keeps them full for longer
Fruit Loop Cereal WHY: Too much processed sugar, low in fibre and no real nutritional value Chocolate Flavoured Snack Pot High in sugar and additives, leaves children hungry as it does not contain enough fibre content White Toast with Jam White toast is high in starchy carbohdrates and jam is high in sugar, this combination will lead to craving more sugary carbohydrates like donuts later in the day.
Being a role model yourself – kids copy their parents so make sure you eat healthily and teach your children the importance of good nutrition. Avoid battles over food – meal times should be fun not war zones, if your kids don’t like certain foods demanding they eat it is not going to make a happy family. Instead search for a nutritionally equivalent alternative or become creative, if your child refuses to eat vegetables grate them into spaghetti bolognaise or nachos, they will never know! Involve your kids in the process – kids love to help in the kitchen and letting them prepare, stir or serve the family meal will not only provide you quality time together but when children see the ingredients prepared and cooked they are more likely to try different foods than if they just get the end result presented to them at the table Follow this link to go to the full list including positive and negative nutrition for Kids for both Dinner and lunch.
Independence Is Bliss Jackie Maxted on life, challenges, business, success, health and being one of Australia’s most influential women Starting a business is never easy, establishing yourself in the market, satisfying your customers, creating revenue and delivering a great product are all essential. So imagine if it was 1999; the Internet industry was just starting to develop and you had launched a world first online media resource, Well that was exactly what Jackie Maxted, CEO of the Directories Group – home to beautyheaven.com.au and beautydirectory.com.au faced. Fast forward a decade and from its humble beginnings beautydirectory.com.au has enjoyed continued growth, allowing her to branch out into the consumer market with the launch of Beautyheaven.com.au which now has over 65,000 members across Australia, making it Australia’s most visited online beauty resource. “I can’t say it’s been an easy ride – but it has been worthwhile. I’m still learning new things everyday and using that information to help further both our businesses“ Looking for flexibility after moving to Australia from the UK in the early 90’s Jackie Maxted soon began juggling working long hours on her expanding business with looking after her four children. Since those chaotic beginnings of the 90’s, Jackie has given up smoking and despite being heavily involved in the glamorous beauty industry she rarely drinks, preferring to focus on a set of daily rituals to help increase her personal and professional performance. All of which has helped establish her reputation as a leader in the Australian online community and beauty industries culminating in recently being invited to become a member of Australia’s ‘Online Divas’ and proposed as one of the country’s 50 most influential women in the digital media industry. • What prompted the move to Australia? I was happily living in London and working at the BBC. There were lots of Aussies working there at the time and I became good friends with one of them in particular. Once she got back we kept in touch. In 1987 I found myself with a little unexpected financial gift and I a choice - a deposit on an east end flat or a trip of a lifetime to Australia. It wasn’t a difficult choice! • What was you greatest challenge when you came to Australia? Leaving behind some really good friends and my family. At first my family were very resistant to my plans to live here. I remember Mum telling me, in an emotionally charged moment, that she wouldn’t be coming to visit because Australia was not a place she had ever planned for a holiday! Twenty something years later and she still
continues to visit us every year – and LOVES the place as much as I do! • What do you think the biggest pressures are for women to do with body image? and how can the beauty industry have a positive effect on these? I think there is enormous pressure for women to be a certain size – and it seems especially prevalent around new mothers. All the magazines seem to love a story about how quickly these supermum’s get back to their prepregnancy weight and shape. That’s hard! Having had four children myself I really don’t think it’s a great idea to be setting high expectations of how your body should look straight after giving birth. At this time in your life there are so many new challenges this seems like a relatively unimportant one to me!
Interview continues on page 36
“Life is Short and we arent here for a dress rehersal
- Jackie Maxted
•
How has beautyheaven.com.au changed you life?
It makes me very proud that we have built and successfully developed a new type of medium with new and exciting technologies. The group of people I work with are amazing too – hard-working and dedicated but still approach their work with a real sense of fun. I’m also much, much busier than I have ever been – there are moments when I feel like packing up and running away from it all. Luckily they pass! •
How do you establish your priorities?
It’s really straightforward for me – in that I have the responsibility for the beautyheaven.com.au business but also to my family – a partner and four children. After that there isn’t a great deal of time left over! Having said that I do make sure I have time to do the things I need to do to stay fit and well – so I practice yoga three times a week and generally do a few 5k runs a week too. My friends and time with my husband often get a back seat – but this will change as the children get older. My youngest is now 8 so she’ll start to have her own social life in the next few years and I will be a little more free to pursue some other things! •
What is on the horizon for beautyheaven.com.au?
We are always working on the next big thing for beautyheaven.com.au! Currently we are redeveloping the loyalty and rewards programs so that members get even greater rewards and more often. We are also developing mobile applications for the site – so we can offer real women’s beauty product reviews in a mobile format while you are shopping! •
What advice could you give to other people looking to stop smoking and get healthy?
Getting healthy and wanting to be healthy is something that comes from inside of you – unfortunately nobody can really help when it comes down to it. Finding the motivation to start is really hard but once you get into the rhythm it just gets easier and easier. I suppose the best advice I can give is just to start with something – however small. So if you smoke 20 cigarettes a day and you can’t imagine giving up, then try cutting down a little. If you don’t exercise at all, start with a gentle walk, two or three times a week and just get your body into a new pattern. They say it takes 21 days to form a new habit, so give yourself this amount of time to adjust. •
How do you define success?
For me, it’s about finding that balance we talked about before. When I started my own business first in 1992, the priority was to have flexibility in work so I could be there for the children. Moving on twenty years, I like to be stimulated by the work I do but never let it take over. I love to be able to travel to interesting places, try new experiences, sit and watch TV, have my yoga and running time and see my kids playing soccer at the weekend. Success comes from having the resources to do all that normal stuff. •
Do you have any regrets at all along the way?
I generally try not to have regrets – I believe in the idea of the journey you are supposed to have, and to accept it for what it is. Having said that, I did leave my first born child
in Family Day Care when he was only three months old and have since wondered whether that was the right thing to do. It’s a really difficult area and I respect everyone’s choices in this area, but it was just very early for me. If I had my time again, maybe I would do that part of my life differently. • What its like to be named as one of the country’s 50 most influential women in the history of digital media? It’s a huge compliment and I consider myself lucky to have been in the right place at the right time! It was never really our intention to become digital experts but because we started our first business in this environment (beautydirectory.com.au) we naturally become highly involved with digital media from quite an early stage. Back in 1999 when we entered into this new technology we were barely comfortable with email. Now the landscape has changed beyond recognition and we have been able to use our learnings over the years to create the necessary knowledge and culture for an innovative and fast-changing business. •
What or who inspires you?
I get inspired all the time – from movies, books and people I meet. I’m always working on the next idea – whether it’s a change of lifestyle, a new business or a personal adventure I’m easily caught up in the excitement of change and newness. •
What is your feel good ritual?
An early morning run in the cold weather, followed by an ocean dip (not a swim, a dip is plenty!) and a homemade fruit and nut porridge with a soy chai and the weekend newspapers (the real newspaper, not online!) •
What does ‘Balance’ mean to you?
Keeping myself calm, healthy and happy. With the potential for a ridiculous schedule due to the demands that work could place on me, I have to be careful to establish and stick to boundaries. If the balance is good, I stay well and have a fabulous mixture of hard work and great rewards. In out of balance times I get stressed, things fall apart at home or I end up in bed with a cold! Travelling is always a fun experience – well almost always. According to the recently released SITA 2010 Baggage Report, airlines mishandled over 25 million passenger bags worldwide in 2009. The report also states that while the vast majority of bags are returned to the owners within 48 hours, around 850,000 bags remained unclaimed or were stolen. If you happen to be one of the 25 million who has experienced losing a bag while in transit, you’ll know how stressful it can be. Here are some tips to avoid the situation, or if you aren’t so lucky, manage it so it doesn’t take the fun out of your holiday.
Check-in early. Whatever your booking confirmation says you need to allow for time to check-in, add an extra 45 minutes - especially in busy cities, and most especially when travelling with kids. If there is a long queue or you encounter problems at the check-in counter, your bags - and your family - still have enough time to clear security and make it onto the correct flight. Allow sufficient time between connecting flights. This will ensure your bags have enough time to be off loaded and transferred onto your next flight.
Put proper identification on ALL your bags – both outside and inside. Check-in luggage, carry-on bags, laptop bags, kids’ backpacks, strollers should all have a sturdy ID tag that won’t tear off for easy identification. Useful information to include would be your name, physical address where the bags can be returned, a contact
Personalised luggage tags are available from www.bagtagstudio.com.au (RRP $12.95)
number or email address where you can be reached while you are away. Tip: If you have concerns about putting your home address on the tag, consider putting a frequent flyer membership number (for the airline you are travelling with) instead. This way all your relevant information can be retrieved by airline staff if they need to. Make note of how many pieces you have. Before you check-in your bags, make a note of how many pieces of luggage you have in total, including all hand-carry items, strollers, and car seats. This way you can do a baggage count each time you move from one point to the next making sure nothing has been left behind. Remove airline tags from previous trips. These can cause confusion and result in your bag being loaded onto the wrong flight.

Ensure airline staff attach the correct flight and destination details on your check-in bags. Double check this before your bag gets loaded onto the conveyor belt and heads off into the intricate world of airport baggage handling. Make your bag stand out. Having a distinctive luggage tag or other noticeable identifier on your bag ensures someone doesn’t mistake your bag for theirs. Arrive at Baggage Claim early. Being there to pick up your bags as soon as it comes onto the carousel reduces the chances of someone else picking it up by mistake. If despite these precautions, you still find yourself in a ‘lost bag situation’, don’t panic. Be prepared for it by taking a few simple precautions before you leave. Take photos of each bag. Keep a printed copy of photos with your passports. If you need to report a lost bag and identify it, a picture is worth a thousand words. Split pack in each bag. Rather than having one suitcase for each person, or doing the ‘one for adults, one for kids’ suitcase split, make sure each suitcase has a few outfits for everyone. That way, should one of your bags go missing, everyone still has something to wear. Split your cash and credit cards. If you are travelling with another adult, split your cash and carry your own credit cards.
Keep all medication and valuables in your carry-on bags. Be aware of airline rules for declaring sharps and other items allowed on board and have them with you at all times, especially prescription medication which may be more difficult to replace. Have a ‘Do Not Lose’ bag. This is the bag you guard with your life and keep with you at all times. It would typically have things like your passports, cash, credit cards, itinerary and booking confirmations, travel insurance documents, and any essential medicines such as allergy, asthma or prescription medication. Keep your check-in luggage stubs. Airlines normally attach this to your boarding pass. While most of the time you may not even notice they are there, you will need them to track down any missing bags. Travel insurance. Know what you are entitled to claim for lost baggage and how to go about it. Keep travel insurance documents in your ‘Do Not Lose’ bag. Realising that one of your bags is missing can be quite stressful. By taking these simple precautions, if you do find yourself in this situation, at least you can make sure it doesn’t take the fun out of your holiday.

Lonely children and teenagers disclose more personal and intimate information on the internet than those who are not lonely, a Queensland University of Technology (QUT) study has found.

Olympic Gold Medalist, Mum, Author, Public Speaker & Avid Traveller What has been your favourite destination to travel? I’ve been travelling the globe for over 25 years as an elite athlete and now as a coach. I’ve covered Asia, Europe (east and west), South and North America and Australia. The only continent I’ve yet to spend any time in is Africa. So, when I think back to my favourite places, I’d have to say Europe. The history, the old mixed with new. The different cultures within such a small area. The different landscapes and the different culinary delights. That’s what I would call my favourite place. It’s not one country, but one continent with many amazing treasures.
Also, if you start off with a half empty suitcase, there’s more room for bringing back all those treasures from your travels!! What is Sydney’s "best kept secret"?
I would have to say the lifestyle of the Northern Beaches. It’s far enough away from the rest of Sydney to feel like When did you make your first trip? you’re on holiday at a beach destination, but then just a quick ferry ride or car drive into the city or to a business I went to Japan to represent Australia as an Indoor Vol- meeting. leyball player in 1982. I still do it, after all these years. Janeiro, Brazil. It’s considered the largest art deco statue I take too many clothes and other bits and pieces. It’s nice in the world and stands at almost 50 metres tall. When to be prepared, but seriously – you can buy whatever you you drive up the Corcovado mountain’s small, steep carneed along the way. and see this amazing statue. How did they possibly build it all the way up here? How did they possibly get all those stones up here to build it? Incredible to see and the view from all the way up on that mountain is also amazing. Have you every travelled overseas "without having to take your volleyball"? After 22 years of playing, I finally went on a trip to Europe as a holiday with my husband. It was fantastic. I finally got to spend time roaming around all those wonderful cities that I used to just fly into, play and then fly out of. I’ve done that a few times now and the beauty of having travelled to so many different places, I know which ones I’d like to go back to. Do you believe it is best to travel with a tour of just a partner/small group? I’d recommend travelling with just one or two friends. Make sure they’d like to visit the same places you want to visit – before you leave! Have a back up plan if they decide to leave you in the lurch. i.e. there maybe some one else you know that’s somewhere near you that you can hook up with. If there are too many people in your group, then it’s much harder to decide how to please everyone and you waste time trying to decide. If you’re on a tour, there’s no flexibility. If you stop and you’d like to stay longer, it’s often not possible. So, I’d say find 3 like minded friends or acquaintances to start off with, make a plan and go out and see the world. What is your next "must see" destination? Africa, for sure. I can’t wait until my son is a little older and we can take him on a safari! What has been your funniest travel experience? It’s always pretty funny when I try to pack my bag on the homeward bound leg. I’m always asking myself how I’m going to get on the plane with all this and not pay excess! I put on all my heavy clothes and shoes. I put my heavy items in my handbag (cause they never weigh that!) and then stuff my other carryon bags as full as possible. If they say they’re too heavy or I have too many (when I’m checking in) then I leave one with another player/coach/ friend and she watches it while I check in. Then I just carry it through customs and bag checks. Works every time. As long as you make it look easy and don’t struggle under the weight! 4 Tips for Organising Dinner By Kay Marco (Hectic Helpers) The last thing you want to do when you get home is to think about cooking dinner, but with a bit of planning, meals don’t need to be such a hassle. Here are a few planning tips to help you out: 1. Make a meal plan each week while you write your grocery list – yes you need to take the time to write a list. It takes a bit of time, but it will save you time throughout the week. 2. Plan 7 dinner meals. You don’t need to allocate a day for them to be eaten, but each evening you have a list of meals you can choose from, and because you wrote a grocery list, you have the ingredients available. 3. Slow cookers are a busy person’s best friend. Defrost your meat, chop your vegies and add your sauce the night before and put it in the fridge. Before you run out the door in the morning, switch it on low and when you get home, dinner is ready. 4. Need to Get Organised? No matter who you are or what you do, it seems like there is never enough hours in the day to finish what we want to get done. For years people have been trying to determine how to better utilise our time to ensure that we develop the work/life balance we all crave. This month we have compiled a list of things that could be holding you back in your ability to finish your tasks and as always some action steps to allow you to be more productive and organised.
Procrastination
The mother of all organising devils is procrastination, single handedly procrastination can interrupt your day, allow work to pile up and ensure you are at the office at 7 instead of home with the kids.
Tip: Once you have begun a task, stick at it, don’t allow external influences to interrupt you, that doesn’t mean you don’t answer the phone, but it does mean that when you are finished with a call you note the conversation and then go straight back to completing you task. Set deadlines and timelines for your tasks and plan a schedule around completing them.
Procrastination itself does not eliminate the task instead only cultivating the task into a much bigger more prominent problem until eventually it gets so big and destructive you have to do the task anyway. Passion
Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on If you find yourself not doing what you are meant to of an uncompleted task - William James through procrastination or going on endless meeting and coffee breaks and taking on tasks that don’t even Tip: The best way for dealing with procrastination is relate to your job, it could be that you aren’t passionate to get the big jobs done first, don’t allow yourself to about what you are doing? get distracted by other more meaningless tasks, this takes planning. Plan your day, identifying your major You will never do something at your optimum level tasks that have to be completed so at the end of the if you don’t have passion for it, you have to find day you can see which tasks that needed completion something that excites you and gets you up in the are done and you don’t have a feeling at the end of the morning. day of having been extremely busy, but not achieving Most people are other people. Their thoughts are anything particularly worthwhile. someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation. – Oscar Wilde Multi-tasking
Although many people pride themselves on their ability to multi-task, it can actually be one of the most disruptive aspects to your day. Understandably the majority of us have to multi-task at some point, however as is indicated in our multi-tasking article (page 43) it often results in work not being completed at all and ensuring that you are left juggling the tasks with nothing ever being completed. Multitasking is the art of distracting yourself from two things you’d rather not be doing by doing them simultaneously - Eideteker
Tip: What is it that makes you really happy? Even now in your current job what is it that when you’re asked to do it, you just get extra excited. That is your first clue, take 30 minutes to think about what you used to do when you were younger, its likely that these things are were your passion lies, when you had no worries and responsibilities and you simply did them because you enjoy them. Now formulate a plan of how you will start incorporating that into your life, you may not be able to quit your job at the drop of a hat, but you may be able to gradually increase the time and reward your passionate work bring you and if you have passion for it, you will find a way to make money.
Men winning the multi-tasking
‘battle of the sexes’ Though women have traditionally prided themselves on their superior ability to multitask, experts are now suggesting that men may have it right – with multi-tasking being blamed for plummeting concentration levels and an epidemic of adult ADD.
New research has shown that seven out of ten Australian adults are unable to concentrate for more than half an hour at a time – less than the length of an average school period – while over half confessed to being distracted by other thoughts and losing concentration within just 15 minutes of starting a task. The same research also confirmed what women have been boasting about for years – 40 percent of female respondents claimed to constantly juggle more than one task at a time – a figure three times that of male respondents.
Multi-tasking trains our minds to constantly seek new information while experiencing greater difficulty concentrating on its content. In fact, scientific studies have actually shown that people who jump back and forth between tasks take about one and a half times as long to
Tip 1: Warm up your brain The same neurons fire in your brain when you visualise something as when you actually do it. So warm-up your brain by visualising your day progressing smoothly. This will help you focus on what you want to achieve.
Tip 2: Busy Ban Talking about being busy makes you feel busier. 85% of people have answered the question “How are you?” with “Busy!” Ban the word “busy” from your vocabulary. Focus on what you have achieved, not what is still waiting for your attention.
Tip 3: Safe Switching Jumping between tasks causes neural connection to be lost and decreases your efficiency by 50%. When you need to switch tasks, follow these 3 rules to save time and protect your brain: 1. Stop the first task and consciously set it aside; 2. Clear your mind; 3. Focus your attention on the second task fully.
complete them as those who concentrate on one task at a time,” said Martina Sheehan of the Mind Gardener
Continuing, “Actions we experience on a daily basis such as forgetting someone’s name moments after hearing it, not remembering where you parked you car or passing someone you know on the street without noticing are all tell-tale signs of “busy mind syndrome”, which is associated with stress, disengagement, poor health and unhappiness.”
Sheehan admits that multitasking can’t always be avoided, however, there is a way to juggle tasks with minimal disruption to productivity: “Breaking a thought process causes neural connections to be lost, unless you switch between tasks in a way that protects your brain. In “The Clear Mind Guide” we talk about the practice of “safe switching”. This involves stopping the task you are working on and taking a moment to pause and clear your mind. It’s then very important to engage your senses and keep your mind fully connected with what you are doing instead of flickering back to the previous task.
Along with co-author Susan Pearse, Sheehan has created Mind Gardener, a series of guides dedicated to translating the science of neuroplasticity into practical, everyday exercises and skills. Their latest offering, The Clear Mind Guide, is designed to equip individuals with the tools to help tame a busy mind, improve focus and achieve a high level of “mind fitness”. Overcoming Your Fears Recently, 13-year-old American Jordan Romero scaled Mount Everest becoming the youngest person to do so, breaking the previously held record of 16-year-old Temba Tsheri of Nepal.
Jordan stated on his blog before he set off “Every step I take is finally toward the biggest goal of my life, to stand on top of the world,” Jordan Romero didn’t allow fear to hold him back; instead by focusing on his goal he managed to achieve a feat completed by fewer than 1500 people in history. What’s the point of this story: Fear stops achievement.
Presenting itself in many forms, fear can become a debilitating force, hindering your ability to extend yourself beyond your comfort zone, effecting your emotions and ultimately your ability to complete everyday tasks and reach your goals
Fear can either be a call to action or crippling feeling of helplessness, depending on how you react to that ‘churning at the bottom of the stomach’ type of fear.
In her best selling book “Starting from ‘NO’ – 10 Strategies to overcome your fear of rejection and succeed in business”, Azriela Jaffe identifies the majority of fears can be attributed to six broader areas. • • • • • •
Fear of Failure Fear of Success Fear of Being Humiliated Fear of Not Being Liked or Not Receiving Approval Fear of Financial Disaster Fear of Change
Fear is an association made in your brain, more often than not formed from a negative response to a particular feeling, either through a past experience or a situation you have created in your mind that has developed a life of its own.
Ensuring fear does not simply remains fear is an essential step in overcoming those limiting beliefs. If fear is left to manifest itself it will soon become an all consuming feeling that has an adverse effects on all aspects of your life.
