OUR COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY Balch & Bingham nurtures a deep, ongoing commitment to serving the communities across our footprint, both individually and collectively. I am proud of our attorneys and staff who make a profound impact in these communities. Good corporate citizenship is part of our heritage and is extremely important to us. This year, we supported hundreds of charitable organizations both through financial contributions and contributions of time and service by our attorneys and staff. We were afforded many opportunities to volunteer or donate to charitable organizations throughout 2016, each one making a meaningful impact on its community. THE EXCEPTIONAL FOUNDATION Supporting mentally and physically challenged individuals in Birmingham The Exceptional Foundation serves mentally and physically challenged individuals in Birmingham by targeting social and recreational objectives not met by educational institutions or the community at large. It enhances the lives of exceptional individuals with special needs through interactive programming including sports, music, dance, art, field trip experiences, and daily social activities.

RAILROAD PARK FOUNDATION Supporting the revitalization of downtown Birmingham Located in the middle of downtown Birmingham, Railroad Park is 19-acre green space with 300 trees, a lake, rain curtain, bio-filtration wetlands area, ponds, and streams. The green space has received numerous awards for its cutting-edge design. The park is a key part of stimulating revitalization and transformation in the Birmingham area, and the foundation is dedicated to ensuring that momentum continues.

MISSISSIPPI MUSEUM OF ART Supporting Mississippians through visual art and cultural experiences The Mississippi Museum of Art engages Mississippians with visual art and is an inviting public space that offers relevant and meaningful cultural experiences to both the Jackson community and the state of Mississippi. The museum also offers The Museum School, an educational program offering a variety of art opportunities for young children, teens, and
adults, as well as a variety of family programs. In 2010, the museum received the National Medal for Museum Service from the Institute of Museum of Library Services, the highest national honor awarded to museums.

ALABAMA CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL FOUNDATION Supporting ill and injured children since 1911 Children’s of Alabama, a pediatric medical center located in Birmingham, has provided specialized medical care for ill and injured children since 1911. The Alabama Children’s Hospital Foundation is responsible for coordinating all charitable support for the mission of Children’s of Alabama. Philanthropic support from their community of donors helps cover the expenses of vital programs and child-friendly services that are not reimbursed through insurance.

AUTISM SPEAKS Supporting individuals with autism and their families Autism Speaks enhances lives of individuals with autism and their families by providing a variety of solutions and resources to enhance the lives of individuals with autism. The organization is national in scope, with localized programs across the country – including Atlanta. Each year, they host numerous
Autism Speaks Walks. This grassroots movement is powered by parents of children on the autism spectrum, generating funds that fuel innovative research and make connections to critical lifelong supports and services.

AL ABAMA SHAKESPEARE F E S T I VA L Supporting the community through arts education and cultural revitalization The Alabama Shakespeare Festival (ASF) is among the largest and best regarded professional theaters in the nation. Since the theatre first opened in Montgomery, millions of adults have experienced one of the theatre’s productions. Each season, ASF produces seven to ten plays, including at least two plays by Shakespeare. The organization also works directly with students for arts education. Each year, SchoolFest creates an opportunity for more than 40,000 Alabama students to experience the theater.

HARRISON COUNTY EMERGENCY CHILDREN’S SHELTER Supporting the youth in Harrison County who have been neglected, abused, or run away from home The Harrison County Emergency Children’s Shelter is a twenty-four hour shelter in Gulfport for children under 18 years old who have been neglected, abused, or have run away from home. The first shelter of its kind in Mississippi, it is dedicated to ensuring the children’s physical, emotional and educational needs are met.

ALABAMA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Supporting Alabamians through concerts, youth programs, and community engagement As Alabama’s premier performing arts organization, Alabama Symphony Orchestra (ASO) changes lives through music with the help of their concert series, youth programs, and community engagement. Located in Birmingham, it is the state’s only fulltime, professional orchestra, serving 100,000
individuals each year through concert series and youth programs. Each year, the ASO reaches 25,000 students through programming designed to develop creative thinking, helping young people grow from exposure to performances and learning to play an instrument.

BIRMINGHAM ZOO Supporting the Birmingham community as a must-see attraction and animals through advancing scientific studies With approximately 950 animals of 230 species and more than 575,000 visitors per year, the Birmingham Zoo has been noted a must-see attraction for Alabama. The zoo is dedicated to providing educational opportunities and advancing the scientific study of animals, while providing a recreational space for residents and visitors to Birmingham.

ATLANTA COMMUNITY FOOD BANK Supporting people across metro Atlanta and north Georgia by fighting hunger and providing meals Each year, the Atlanta Community Food Bank works with more than 600 nonprofit partners to distribute more than 500 million meals to more than 755,000 people across metro Atlanta and north Georgia. Their goal is to fight hunger by engaging, educating, and empowering their community.

HORTON’S KIDS Supporting hundreds of at-risk children to prepare for college, their careers, and life Horton’s Kids is committed to helping hundreds of at-risk children prepare for college, their careers, and life through educational opportunities and comprehensive programs specifically tailored for their individual needs. The programs focus on academics, enrichment and youth development, health and basic needs, and a community resource center.
The high school graduation rate for a Horton’s Kid is nearly twice the neighborhood average. The organization serves Wellington Park in Ward 8, one of Washington, D.C.’s most atrisk neighborhoods, in which the vast majority of households have an annual income under $10,000.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF THE RIVER REGION Supporting youth across the River Region through youth development programs The Boys & Girls Clubs of the River Region provide youth development programs in a safe, caring, and positive environment for children throughout the Montgomery area. They work to provide hope and opportunities to children between the ages of 6 to 18 by giving them the elements they need to succeed. With two clubs in Montgomery and one in Wetumpka, the organization works with more than 1,300 children.

The foundation develops and manages a comprehensive base
of donated funds, currently totaling over $20 million. Since its founding more than 25 years ago, the foundation has made grants totaling more than $65 million in support of programs in the areas of education, the arts, social welfare, health, historic preservation, neighborhood enrichment, and disaster recovery.

MANE provides therapeutic riding, physical therapy, and sensory experiences on its 44acre property, featuring a state-ofthe art sensory integration trail.

ALABAMA CASA NETWORK Supporting abused, neglected, or abandoned children across Alabama The Alabama CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) Network promotes child abuse awareness throughout the state of Alabama and attempts to ensure that every abused, neglected, or abandoned child in Alabama will have a safe home. When a child enters the
foster care system, a CASA is often appointed to represent and advocate for the child’s best interests. CASAs are highly-trained volunteers who are committed to serving young children. The network has local programs across Alabama, including the Birmingham area.

MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION Supporting children with life-threatening medical conditions Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. In the U.S. and its territories, on average, a wish is granted every 35 minutes.

The theater presents entertaining, challenging, and innovative theatrical productions, a monthly music series, and educational programs to enhance the cultural life of Montgomery and the surrounding River Region.

Supporting students through arts education The Gail Keenan Art Center was constructed to accompany and enhance arts education and its connection to the development of the whole child. Featuring local and regional artists, the gallery provides a visual space for the students to nurture and express their artistic talents and experience themselves as creative contributors
to our world. Featured artists are not required to pay a commission, but are asked to participate in a classroom demo or share some aspect of their work with students at Coast Episcopal School. The gallery is located in the Gulfport area.
WE HAD THE MEANINGFUL OPPORTUNITY TO SPONSOR THE “I’M WALKIN’ FOR MY FREEDOM: THE SELMA MARCH AND VOTING RIGHTS” PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT AT THE GAIL KEENAN ART GALLERY EARLIER THIS YEAR. THE PHOTOGRAPHY WAS CAPTURED BY MATT HERRON, A NOTED CIVIL RIGHTS PHOTOGRAPHER. THE EXHIBIT, USED TO EDUCATE THE STUDENTS ON CIVIL RIGHTS, CONSISTED OF 30 BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS DOCUMENTING THE MARCH AND THE STRUGGLE FOR THE RIGHT TO VOTE.
LAKESHORE FOUNDATION Supporting individuals in Birmingham with disabilities and chronic health conditions The Lakeshore Foundation, located in Birmingham, focuses on improving the lives of those with disabilities and chronic health conditions through an active lifestyle. More than 50 Paralympic athletes have trained at the foundation. In addition to its athletics, recreation, and fitness programs, the Lakeshore Foundation also developed a Lima Foxtrot program, designed specifically for injured military members.
THIS YEAR, WE WERE THRILLED TO SUPPORT THE LAKESHORE FOUNDATION THROUGH SPONSORING THEIR NIGHT OF CHAMPION’S OLYMPIC-THEMED FUNDRAISING EVENT. BIRMINGHAM CIVIL RIGHTS INSTITUTE Supporting the River Region through meaningful theatrical productions The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is a cultural and educational research center that encourages a better understanding and appreciation for the importance of civil rights in Birmingham. Since opening its doors in 1992, BCRI has been visited by more than 2 million people worldwide.

KIDS’ CHANCE OF GEORGIA Supporting education for the children of injured workers Kids’ Chance of Georgia was founded by a Georgia attorney who witnessed the lifechanging impact that workplace injuries have on the families of severely injured workers. After these incidents, the families often encounter unexpected financial hurdles, and many of the
workers’ children are faced with the strain of funding their own education. Kids’ Chance awards need-based scholarships to the children of seriously, catastrophically, or fatally injured workers, enabling the students to pursue their educational goals.

HABITAT FOR HUMANIT Y Supporting families in need of affordable housing Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit housing organization working in nearly 1,400 communities across the U.S. and in approximately 70 countries around the world. Families in need of affordable housing help build their own homes alongside volunteers from the community. Additionally, Habitat’s Disaster Response works with local communities to address housing needs after natural disasters.

JUNIOR LEAGUE OF JACKSON Supporting the need for better health, education, welfare, and safety for Jackson children As one of the larger leagues in the Association of Junior Leagues International, the Junior League of Jackson has more than 2,300 provisional, active, and sustaining members. The organization is dedicated to improving the quality of life in their community by supporting appropriate services and opportunities to provide better health, education, welfare, and safety for all children in the community. The league partnered with dozens of organizations this past year, largely focusing on three areas: early literacy, children’s health, and social development.

THE CHILDREN’S CENTER FOR COMMUNICATION & DEVELOPMENT Supporting infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with significant disabilities The Children’s Center for Communication & Development at the University of Southern Mississippi offers early intervention services for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with significant disabilities. A clinical division of the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences,
The Children’s Center customizes comprehensive educational and therapy plans to support more than 90 children in achieving their maximum potential. The Children’s Center is located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

HANDS ON ATL ANTA Supporting nonprofits and schools across Atlanta Hands On Atlanta helps individuals and groups strengthen Atlanta through service at more than 400 nonprofit organizations and schools in the area. Hands On Atlanta offers an annual service event, ServiceJuris, designed for those that work in or support the legal services industry. The non-legal service project is planned and hosted by representatives of Atlanta law firms and legal service companies.
