Childproofing Tips and Tricks

Preventing Burns - - - - X

KEEP​ the water heater thermostat ​ BELOW​ 120 F/48.9 C ​ and check the water ​ BEFORE​ before putting the child in. BLOCK OFF​ areas around the stove, fireplace, and heaters.

DON’T​ cook, drink, or carry ​ HOT​ beverages/liquids while holding a child. ​ KEEP​ them out of a child’s reach. DON’T ​ microwave a baby’s bottle and​ CHECK ​ temperature of microwaved food before serving.

Preventing Drowning - - - - X

A​ lways cover or close washing machines and in­home spas and hot tubs when not in use.

A​ lways empty water from sinks, pails, coolers and containers after use.

A​ lways watch children in the bathroom or around water.

A​ lways bring everything needed before the child enters the water.

A​ lways keep phone nearby just in case of emergency.

A​ ttend and become CPR certified.

Electrical Safety - - - - X U​ nused wall outlets should be secured. C​ onsider using safety outlets that prevent foreign objects from being inserted. Y​ ou can also block outlets with the creative arrangement of furniture.

Preventing Poisoning - - - - X

Be prepared. ​ Have the National Poison Control number handy: +1(800)222­1222 Store poisonous items out of child’s reach. ​ Put safety locks on all cabinets and drawers that store bug sprays, cleaning products and medications. Some household plants may also be poisonous. Dispose of old or outdated medications. ​ Don’t flush medications on the toilet or sink unless otherwise marked on the label as it will contaminate the water supply.

Traumatic brain Injury (TBI)

Did you know​ according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2016) that children ages 0­4 years had the highest incidence of ANY age group of having TBI? Concussions​ are a type of TBI caused by a bump or blow to the head, generally non fatal but can have serious effects. Reduce incidents of head injuries​ by Having your child wear the ​ right helmet​ for the ​ right activity Going to playgrounds with sand or mulch not grass or dirt Using child safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs Using properly installed car seat or booster seats

Playground Safety

Check playgrounds ​ for soft material like sand, or mulch. Avoid concrete playgrounds Choose playground equipment ​ proper for your child’s age and ability. Ensure safety ​ precautions present like guardrails Look out​ for fall hazards and harmful objects like glass, or wires

Road Traffic Safety For Children - - - - X

Birth up to Age 2: ​ Rear­facing car seat Age 2 up at least Age 5:​ Forward­facing car seat. Age 5 up until seat belts fit properly:​ Booster Seat Once Seat Belts Fit Properly without a Booster Seat:​ Seat Belt Don't ​ Seat Children in ​ Front of an Airbag Seat ​ Children in the ​ Middle of the Back Seat Use Proper Restraints​ Every Trip Parents and Caregivers: ​ Always Wear a Seat Belt Set a good example​ by always using a seat belt themselves.

Preventing Falls - - - - X

Fit​ safety gates to stop your baby getting onto stairs. Cover​ gaps between banisters or balcony railings are more than 6.5cm (2.5 inches) wide with safety netting. Keep​ low furniture away from windows. Have​ windows fitted with locks or safety catches that restrict the opening to less than 6.5cm (2.5 inches).

Preventing Choking - - - - X

TEACH ​ children to chew and swallow their food before talking or laughing. AVOID ​ foods that may get stuck in their throats like nuts, sunflower seeds, fruits with pits or large seeds, popcorn, hard candies, and caramels.

CHOP ​ soft foods into small pieces such as grapes, hot dogs, and cheese. DON’T ​ let children run around, play, or ride in the car while eating lollipops, gum, or candy in their mouths. DON’T ​ let children play with toys with small pieces or parts that may break off.
