PECAN LEAVES
The Pecan Grove, beloved by alumni for generations as the site of Oyster Bake and other gatherings, is graced with century-old pecan trees.
RATTLERS
The moniker of all St. Mary’s athletics teams and students.
UNIVERSITY LOGO
The four directions created by the cross exemplify the goals of St. Mary’s—to educate and assist the student in the challenge of living as an authentic human being. This requires engagement with the complex reality of the self; one’s personal, social, and institutional relationships; one’s embeddedness in and relation to nature; and one’s relation to the transcendent reality of God.
OYSTER AND PEARL Represents the Alumni Association and its signature scholarship fundraising event, Fiesta Oyster Bake.

BARRETT MEMORIAL BELL TOWER
GRADUATION YEAR
You and your class become members of St. Mary’s vast alumni network.
A gift from alumnus Charles Barrett Jr. and his family, the Tower stands at the heart of campus. It rings daily at the Marianists’ Three O’clock Prayer, which is recited around the world.
OUR LADY OF GRACE Greets all who enter the University’s campus.
OUR LADY OF THE PILLAR SUNBURST
Appears as seen on the altar at the Basilica in Zaragoza, Spain, where Blessed William Joseph Chaminade was inspired to start the Society of Mary.
ST. LOUIS HALL
The University’s first, and signature, building was named after St. Aloysius (Louis) Gonzaga, Patron of Catholic Youth.
RING BAND
The textured band of the ring represents the skin of a rattlesnake, St. Mary’s mascot, selected because in the school’s early days playing fields on the campus had to be cleared of the reptiles before competition could begin.
UNIVERSITY SEAL
The official seal of St. Mary’s University honors our namesake and heritage. The five-pointed star is a symbol both for the State of Texas and the University’s patroness, Saint Mary. The letter M is the traditional monogram of Saint Mary. Combined with the letter A as MA, it is an abbreviation of “Mater” (Mother). Or, as AM, it is an acronym for the firstletters of our prayer to Mary, “Ave, Maria” (Hail Mary). The olive wreath enveloping the star is a symbol of Mary. 1852 is the year Marianists arrived in San Antonio and founded St. Mary’s.
