ayan Tuges was once an accomplished wood carver in Guwang village, Gianyar, before developing a new skill as a guitar maker. His encounter with Canadian musician and entrepreneur Danny Fonfeder was a genuine life-changing moment for the Balinese artisan. During their meeting, Fonfeder, a native of Montreal, asked Tuges to try making an acoustic guitar. Without hesitation, Tuges put his skills with wood to work in his small workshop in Guwang. Surprisingly, Tuges not only created a high-quality acoustic guitar but also a piece of art. All of his guitars have beautiful wood finishes, with the body
being intricately decorated in the Balinese style. Every guitar that Tuges makes is unique. Tuges has produced more than 1,500 acoustic guitars since he started in 2008, with some top international musicians, such as Rob Lutes, Rick Monroe, Dino Bradley and George Canyon Band Country Rock Little Texas, collecting them. Indonesian musicians Iwan Fals, Dewa Budjana, Balawan and Eros Djarot are also proud to use Tuges’ guitars in their shows and personal collections. For Tuges, nothing makes him happier than seeing his guitars played by master musicians all over the world.

he island of Bali is undergoing massive development and welcoming a deluge of domestic and foreign tourists, making it hard for people to find places that are serene and peaceful. One excellent option is to take a trip to Nusa Lembongan, one of three small islets that make up Nusa Penida, around 12 kilometers off southeast Bali in the Badung Strait. Far from the hustle and bustle of southern Bali and its main tourist centers, Nusa Lembongan is a sanctuary for those seeking peace and quiet. With white sandy beaches, rich coral reefs and low limestone cliffs, Nusa Lembongan has gorgeous views overlooking the Lombok Strait to the east and Badung Strait to the south. The island can be reached by speedboat from Sanur, a 30-45 minute journey across the Badung Strait depending on the weather. Tickets cost Rp 125,000 (US$8.65) per trip. There are two piers — one each at Jungut Batu and Mushroom Bay — that are the

centers of transportation and tourism. This tiny islet measures no more than 8 square kilometers but has a relatively large mangrove forest, around 212 hectares, flanking its northeastern side. Touring the mangrove forest is probably one of the first activities that visitors choose — either by motorbike from Jungut Batu village, which takes only 15 minutes, or by jukung traditional fishing boat, which costs around Rp 100,000 per trip. To the south is a yellow suspension bridge connecting Nusa Lembongan and the neighboring islet of Ceningan. The bridge has become an iconic landmark and is popular both for picnics and for couples taking prewedding photographs. A visit to a seaweed cultivation center is another interesting activity, while in the afternoon, Nusa Lembongan’s three beaches — Dream Beach, Devil’s Tear and Sunset Beach, are the best places to enjoy the sunset.

Lombok International Dancesport Festival “Dance takes over Senggigi” Words and photos Chris O’Connor

ast weekend saw Senggigi inundated with dancers from 17 Indonesian provinces, as well as overseas, for the Lombok International Dancesport Festival, now in its 10th year; an event that produced three days crammed with competitive dancing, tension and flamboyant costumes. Friday morning saw the Bima ballroom at Sentosa Resort Senggigi host the International Dance Asia (IDA) Artistic and Freestyle dance competition, with traditional dance kicking off the day. A Balinese troupe took top honors for traditional dance with an exceptional legong condong performed with precision, elegance and poise, while a belly dance from Malaysia and the Thai classical dance were also very popular. The afternoon session featured some extraordinary hip-hop in a fierce competition with high standards. Saturday was dedicated to the Kejurnas X national championship, an essential competition for dancers wanting to compete at the four-yearly National Games (PON) in 2016. From the Solo Beginners’ cha cha cha, rumba and jive at 9 a.m., to the grand final of the

Amateur Latin at 10 p.m., the intensity and skill of the performers was unrelenting. Sunday celebrated international dance with the IDA Ballroom and Latin finals for dancers of all ages and standards. British couple Rebecca Scott and Lloyd Perry, only 17 years of age, won several categories, while couples from Japan and Hong Kong took all the accolades in the Professional Ballroom categories. The quickstep of Japan’s Go and Kelko Hashimoto was particularly memorable for its speed and grace. The jewel in the crown and closing competition was the Professional Latin dances with their sheer ferocity and pace. The Ukrainian winners, Dmytro Wloch and Ekaterina Krysanova, danced a sensational samba and paso doble, although Wook Lee and Jenny Song from South Korea pushed them particularly hard in the rumba and jive. The festival was once again made possible by the expertise and efforts of Puri Mas Boutique Resorts and Spa owner and chief sponsor Marcel de Rijk, who, along with his team, the support of a huge international panel of adjudicators and the Santosa Villas and Resort Senggigi, Lombok, staged a memorable festival for competitors and spectators alike.

ali is yet to be on par with Paris as a destination for love but the beauty of its landscape, warmth of its inhabitants and stunning culture are more than sufficient reason to drive many lovestruck couples, including rock star Mick Jagger and supermodel Jerry Hall, to declare those blissful words “I do” here. To immortalize that momentous occasion, many couples have gone a long way to select the dream venue and most gorgeous sites for their pre-wedding or post-nuptial photographs. Fortunately, the resort island has these in abundance. Wedding packages offered by many of the island’s top hotels are the best option for the nuptial blessing and reception, logistics-wise. For pre-wedding and postnuptial documentation, here are four sites that are worthy of featuring in your wedding album.
TAMAN UJUNG SOEKASADA A historical water palace constructed in 1909 by the king of Karangasem, this water palace suffered significant damage due to the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963 and the great earthquake in 1976. The local government restored it to its former glory in a three-year renovation project that ended in 2003. The palace features three large pools and several buildings, including open pavilions, that show elements from both traditional Balinese and Dutch architecture. It has grown in recent years into a favorite site for photography, such that the local management has slapped on an additional entry fee for DSLR cameras. WANARA WANA MONKEY FOREST
WERDDHI BUDAYA ART CENTER Lying on the eastern outskirts of Denpasar, this sprawling compound is one of the finest examples of Balinese traditional architecture. Designed by the late Ida Bagus Tugur, an imposing figure in the island’s architectural history, the art center boasts an open amphitheater that can accommodate 6,000 people, three smaller outdoor stages, a modern indoor stage, a fine art museum and a stunning
landscape of pools, fountains, a river, tall trees, carved wooden and stone statues and tropical gardens. Its buildings are rich with traditional reliefs, statues and ornamentations drawn from Hindu mythology. In fact, the whole compound is inspired by the Churning of the Ocean of Milk, a famous Hindu myth on the Gods’ and the giants’ epic efforts to obtain the elixir of immortality.
The largest community-managed reserve on the island, the Monkey Forest at Padangtegal village, Ubud, is the perfect photo site for romantic couples who want to fully embrace Mother Nature. The 14-hectare woods is populated by around 600 monkeys — a truly boisterous cast for your own version of a Tarzan-meets-Jane photo session — as well as 115 plant species, including the rare, sacred Majegau. Inside the forest is the Beji temple, from
which the locals source holy water for religious ceremonies. An old banyan tree with its curtain of aerial prop roots stands before the temple, offering a majestic backdrop for couples in love. A morning photo session in the forest should be topped off with an afternoon session at the nearby Campuhan Ridge, where the swaying grasses and golden sun spell out the same word for both the couple and the photographer alike: romantic. TEGALWANGI BEACH No place captures love better than the beach at sunset. Tegalwangi Beach, near Four Seasons resort in Jimbaran, is the perfect embodiment of that burning desire to spend the rest of your life with another beautiful human being. “It has everything: gentle waves, crystal-clear water, white sand, majestic cliffs and a perfect sunset that turns the sky into a breathtaking canvas of colors,” wedding photographer Mario Andi Supria of Aditiniranjan Photography said. Tegalwangi literally means fragrant field, an appropriate launch site for your life together as husband and wife.

Calonarang “A contemporary theatrical adaptation”
Words and photos Anggara Mahendra
K
ing Airlangga of the Daha kingdom in Kediri, East Java, was buoyant while watching the dance performances, but his happiness ended when he found out that four dancers had died soon after the show ended. The tragedies did not stop there but continued to affect his people, who were dying of unclear causes. The king was enraged and confused. He summoned his faithful soldiers — Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura — and instructed them to find Empu Baradah, a powerful priest who he believed could stop these misfortunes befalling his kingdom and his people.

The performance was an extract of a theatrical work entitled “Bukan Silat Bukan Sihir: The Calonarang” (Not a Martial Arts or a Magical Thing: The Calonarang), performed by Teater Kini Berseri at the Natya Mandala Theater in the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar from Sept. 4 to 6. Despite its roots being in the 11th century East Java kingdom of Daha-Kahuripan, the Calonarang is considered one of the most fascinating legends in Balinese oral and written folklore. The story centers on an old widow, Calonarang, whose magical power surpasses
that of the king. She is traditionally known as a perfect personification of wrath and evil. Calonarang is assisted by Dewi Durga (the goddess of destruction) in her evil deeds, which she uses to keep the men of the village away from her beautiful daughter, Ratna Manggali. She vents her fury and anger by spreading a deadly disease to destroy the kingdom. The king instructs the priest, Empu Barada, to outwit her, so the priest asks a gifted student, Empu Bahula, to marry Manggali so he can get hold of Calonarang’s book of sorcery. Using the power found in this book, Calonarang is eventually defeated. Traditionally, Calonarang is staged in the Pura Dalem temples, which honor Lord Shiva, or cemeteries, which are also considered sacred and mystical places. However, more contemporary adaptations have arisen lately. Indra Parusha, a coordinator at Teater Kini Berseri, said in this Calonarang performance they had presented contemporary characters taken from Japanese Manga-style animation — Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura. “Instead of presenting scary characters, we wanted to reach out to a young audience — the millennial generation, which is more familiar with Japanese comic book characters,” Parusha said. The idea for this contemporary staging of Calonarang started three months ago. Directors Benny Dipo and Oka Wardana delved into the idea from the Calonarang story written by famed author Pramoedya Ananta Toer. With new references and additional elements from
the Pedalangan, the world of wayang puppets, and Japanese comics, the story was enriched and inspiring, while being fresh and fun. The stage setting, as well as the musical and video background, was supported by the works of Paperclip Motion to resemble a contemporary comic scene that successfully transformed this traditional story into an innovative multimedia show without changing the original plot. The fiery Calonarang was presented as more than just a black magician, also being a loving mother who wanted to protect her daughter.

he beaches surrounding the three islets of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air have the most beautiful white sand in the northern part of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara province. The three islets are now the prima donna of the province’s tourism as they offer spectacular underwater attractions and are sufficiently remote for tourists looking to stay away from the hustle and bustle of the neighboring island of Bali without being too far away from civilization. Of the three islets, Gili Trawangan is the largest, covering an area of 340 hectares. The public infrastructure here is also better and it has wide, flat streets. No motor vehicles are allowed to operate on this tiny islet, which now has plenty of tourist accommodation, villas, cafes and restaurants. Hundreds of tourists enjoy riding bicycles or taking Cidomo horse carts around the island. There are two routes to the Gilis, as the three islets are often called. The first is from Padangbai Port in Karangasem, east Bali, where travelers can take a speed boat to Gili Trawangan for between Rp 500,000 to Rp 700,000 (US$34.60-$48.80) for a one-way journey that takes about one-and-a-half hours. The other possible route is from Bangsal, a small fishing port in North Lombok, from where it takes only 15 minutes to Gili
Trawangan on a traditional boat and costs only Rp 15,000. The main tourist venues are in Center Point, situated on the eastern side of the islet. There are also local residential areas, a traditional market and a small port. It only takes one hour to explore Gili Trawangan by bicycle; rental shops offer bicycles for Rp 50,000 per 24 hours. The best time to cycle is when it is not too hot — in the morning between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., or in the afternoon before sunset. Cycling in the morning around Gili Trawangan is memorable and offers stunning views of the volcano Mount Rinjani in the background. Many visitors walk or jog to reach their favorite part of the island. If you opt to go cycling in the afternoon, it is best to start from Sunset Point, where, if the light is right, you can see Mt. Agung in east Bali over the Lombok Strait. It only takes between 15 and 20 minutes to cycle from Center Point to Sunset Point. If you want to see more local life, venture through the labyrinth of narrow alleys in the residential areas and talk to the locals to learn more about their lives and to get a feel for real life on Gili Trawangan. The choice is yours — Gili Trawangan has much to offer.

“Autistic children learn through play” Words and photos Luh De Suriyani
G
ung Wah was singing to encourage her friend Putri through painful medical treatment at Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar. Putri suffers from thalassemia and has had to have blood transfusions since she was a baby. Gung Wah is an autistic teen who, along with Arsa and other children with autism, visits the hospital to entertain patients by singing and playing with finger puppets. “Get well soon friends,” said Gung Wah, handing over 80 finger puppets to children in hospital with thalassemia, tumors and cancers. These autistic children are members of Sarwahita Autistic Learning Center, managed by the Bali Autistic Awareness Foundation. “We are extremely happy to see how our [autistic] children trying to communicate with others through songs and toys,” said Bunda Ratih from the foundation. Autism, a condition estimated to affect one or two people in every 1,000, is a brain disorder that affects a person’s ability to communicate with others. People with autism often do not like, or are incapable of, mixing with others and lack basic social skills. Instead, they often obsessively focus on one interest. Research by New Scientist has revealed

that singing and playing with dolls could help autistic children learn the social skills they lack, finding that when they played with specially designed toys, like finger puppets, they could learn to communicate and even develop language skills and improve their vocabulary. The children from Sarwahita Autistic Learning Center, which is located on Jl. Ahmad Yani, have overcome their own barriers to be able to entertain and communicate with their peers in hospital in their own unique ways. One group of autistic children visited wards and sang songs for those who could not leave their beds, while another entertained sick children in the playroom, playing with theatrical dolls. Putri and Lov, who both suffer from thalassemia, and 5-year-old Dimas, who has an abdominal tumor, looked happy while watching the performance. The activity is supported by Narasi Bori community, which teaches children and adults how to create finger puppets for educational purposes. “You don’t have to have design and sewing skills to create finger puppets. The most important thing is your willingness to try and to share with others,” said Madia Debya.

Island Buzz ThaItalian and FlowRider at Waterbom Lights, music, food, drinks, palm trees, waves and boards under a night sky combined in the right setting produce something spectacular. On Sept. 9, Waterbom Bali hosted a showcase for its new venue, the open concept ThaItalian theatre kitchen restaurant and FlowRider surfing machine. Getting to the venue itself, on walkways decorated with candles, over bridges, with dimmed lights illuminating tropical gardens, was an introduction to the attractions to come. The feel was festive with a display of multicolor lights, moving laser beams, shapes and shadows illuminating the 25-meter high slides and slide towers. The evening started out with acoustic music from Saeng-Fah, followed by a display of killer skills from local FlowRider champs. The surfers pulled off a synchronized routine with stunts and smiles that produced lots of cheers. Later on, beats and tunes were provided by DJ MAAFT SAI. Throughout the night, culinary delights such as Thai Roti Kluey Horm Chocolate (banana-chocolate roti) were handed out and a buffet dinner with an array of Thai and Italian dishes was provided. It was a night to wind down, share laughs, try exotic foods and get your adrenaline pumping on the FlowRider surf machine, which kept the stationary wave rolling and boards moving.
Painting exhibition by young Balinese artists For the fourth consecutive year, the Shanti Foundation, in cooperation with The Shanti Collection, L Hotels & Resorts and Pristine Events Bali, hosted a painting exhibition by young and talented Balinese artists. This charity event was held from Sept. 11–13 at Four at Drupadi villas in Seminyak and showcased 26 paintings created by students of Sukawati Art School (SMK Negeri 1 Sukawati). This year, the theme was “Inspiring Leaders of The World” using the pop-art style of painting. This theme was chosen to encourage the young participants to explore and adopt contemporary art by embracing freedom of expression and venturing outside the box. An expert panel of judges, namely Popo Danes, I Ketut Arka and I Ketut Marra, were invited to evaluate the paintings so the three best works could be awarded an array of interesting prizes, including a vacation to Singapore. Besides the exhibition, a small community bazaar was provided to support small local businesses and guests were able to purchase creative home industry products and other unique goods. “Many of us have forgotten the virtues of loving, giving and sharing,” said Manchharam. “I hope that this initiative will make a meaningful contribution to the community.” September 17, 2015
