he bali-based non-profit organization bhakti Senang Hati has found a friend and exhibition space at alaya resort Kuta, the holiday island’s most popular new award-winning resort. Kicking off last Saturday, the month-long exhibition was organized by melly St. ange of Flash charity bali, with all proceeds going to the non-profit organization that admirably develops self-confidence, as well as physical and economic independence, for disabled people in bali. bhakti Senang Hati Foundation has been praised for cultivating the talents of physically disabled artists with the motto “from isolation to integration”. “The aim of this exhibition is not only to raise funds but also to empower people with

special needs and to generate awareness about the difficulties they face on a daily basis,” melly said. The opening cocktail event on Saturday raised almost rp 5 million (US$356), which included the sale of merchandise and a painting. The fifth such collaboration between Flash charity bali and bhakti Senang Hati, this event involved seven artists: ni Putu Suriati, dayu Wid, I Gusti Putu Ketradnyana, I Komang Suarjaya, I Wayan Tono, Kadek Winda and dyani Sinung. Two of the physically challenged artists participating in the event, dayu Wid and Putu Suriati, are both members of the foundation and today, with the assistance of the non-profit organization, are productive members of the
balinese community. celebrated Javanese artist, dyani Sinung, also showcased some of her recent paintings to support the exhibition. currently residing in bali, Sinung has taken it upon herself to nurture and mentor the talent of her fellow artists. Proceeds from the exhibition will go toward the establishment of small businesses that benefit the lives of the often “forgotten” members of society. “For example, one project is to establish a cake shop, a wonderful dream
that is coming closer to fruition,” melly said. alaya resort Kuta was proud to be the host of the event and considered it a way to strengthen its relationship with the community. General manager Jeffrey Wibisono said, “anytime a business like ours can step in and help, we need to do so. This kind of participation is the very fabric that binds a community together.” The exhibition will run until Jan. 12, 2016, and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“An inspiring way to improve literacy among children” WORDS AND PHOTOS LUH DE SURIYANI
F
ostering a love of learning through reading books from an early age is a tough task, but some teachers in Bali have made a breakthrough in showing children that reading can be fun. With a belief that learning is the very key to ensuring a child’s success in school and life, these teachers have tried to find a way to make children feel motivated and compelled to learn through reading. Supported by the Indonesian Children’s Literacy Foundation, they have authored six books that feature attractive illustrations to stimulate the interest of young learners, which were launched on Dec. 11 at Taman Baca Kesiman in Denpasar. One of the books, titled Lautkah Ini?, authored by Kusumadewi and illustrated by Anna Triana, narrates the cycle of water. This full-color book has been well received by students since it was distributed to several schools. “They were very enthusiastic to look at the pictures, and it helps them to better understand the topic,” said Kusumadewi, a teacher at Dyatmika School, citing one part of the book that explains how vapor turns into clouds before becoming raindrops. Another interesting thing about the book is that the plants and the entire ecosystem are

illustrated with lines in the batik style, thanks to an idea from Anna — a student of Visual Communication Design at Bandung Institute of Technology, whose art is inspired by batik. The five other books are Raka Bangga by Ayu Sugati and Diani Apsari, Waktunya Cepuk Terbang by Debby Lukito and Jackson, Karang Gigi untuk Makiki by Aini Abdul and Fanny Santoso and Jana Tak Mau Tidur by Eka Yuliati and Chike Tania. The launch event also featured an exhibition of other books created to stimulate an interest in reading, including some series for students still learning to read. Each of these books comes with more pictures than long sentences, thus the series is fun and easy to read. To improve literacy in Indonesia, the Indonesian Children’s Literacy Foundation also works with Room to Read to publish children’s books in the Indonesian language. The main goal is to teach children not only how to read but, more importantly, how to understand the essence of a book. The foundation has published 50 books and is targeting 19 schools in Badung regency for its pilot project, which is part of the “15 minutes’ Reading Everyday” program included in the school curriculum.

Christmas at Fairmont Sanur Beach “Celebrating in luxurious style

Cover Story
T
he island of Bali doesn’t have the white Christmas that many people covet but it does offer a tropical Christmas experience that not many places in the world can match. If your fantasy Christmas holiday includes a quiet sandy beach, a memorable family feast and a lively family time in an opulent room, which includes a dedicated butler service and a chauffeured ride in, ehm, a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, then you should, by now, be frantically swiping the screen of your iPad and asking the all-knowing Google about Fairmont Sanur Beach Bali. That, however, should not stop you from reading the rest of this story. This exclusive establishment of 120 suites and villas boasts enough space, indoors as well as outdoors, to keep a family with even the most active kids happy all day long. A well-manicured lawn and gardens, as well as a long stretch of white sandy beach dotted with colorful traditional outriggers, are visual indulgences that spoil both the eyes and the mind that yearns for tranquil nature. Each suite boasts one of the largest rooms on the island, plus an expansive 25-square meter outdoor terrace with oversized daybeds that provide an even closer connection to
nature. Moreover, each features custommade furniture, handcrafted fixtures, carefully curated artwork, as well as individual stone and wood pieces that celebrate the skills and creativity of local artisans. While the room can serve as a personal sanctuary where family members can congregate and share the warm feeling of Christmas, a merrier celebration will take place in the resort’s two restaurants: Layang Layang, offering authentic Indonesian food, and Nyala Beach Club and Grill with Pan-Asiatic cuisine. Both restaurants have prepared special Christmas dinner menus for their patrons. The gastronomic feast will start on the evening of Dec. 24 with the Christmas Eve Beach Barbeque, featuring a selection of grilled seafood from lobsters, king prawns and mahi-mahi to assorted meats. It will be topped with Indonesian desserts and the addition of Christmas pudding. The highlight of the barbeque is undoubtedly the beach itself. As the day reaches its end, patrons have the opportunity to witness the twilight beauty of Sanur and its coastline. Despite decades of tourism development, which has seen dozens of upscale resorts and posh restaurants emerge on its shore, Sanur has not lost its old charm as a quiet, calm fishing village. Meanwhile, at about the same time, Nyala Beach Club and Grill will pamper its guests with a three-course set Christmas Dinner, featuring the heavenly goat cheese panna cotta, crispy skin Barramundi and Christmas plum pudding. The festivities will start earlier on the following day with a Christmas Brunch commencing at noon in Layang Layang restaurant. Here patrons can enjoy the traditional feast of smoked and roast turkey, or rejoice in succulent grilled pork ribs and freshly shucked oysters. Other offerings include roasted rib eye, smoked salmon and
grilled tiger prawns to make a very fulfilling celebration. Patrons not staying at Fairmont but wishing to take a piece of its culinary celebration back home can order the takeaway roast turkey. The excellent kitchen staff will cook the turkey with orange and apple stuffing to perfection and hand it over to you with all its traditional trimmings: roast potatoes, honey glazed carrots, roastpan gravy, Brussel sprouts and homemade cranberry sauce. Orders must be placed no later than noon on Dec. 24, while orders placed before Dec. 20 will get a special early bird price — no pun intended. Now, if all this does not make you salivate, then you have either just finished a sumptuous meal or are simply a masochistic Grinch. Either way, swipe that iPad screen again and make your reservation at Fairmont. It is the festive season and you will surely not regret it.

yoman Wangsa is climbing a 20-meter high coconut tree to extract liquid from the coconut flowers — the key ingredient to make arak, a traditional balinese liquor. Wangsa is one of several arak producers making a living in the 336.5 hectare Tri eka buana village in Sidemen, Karangasem regency, eastern bali. around 90 percent of the 600 families in the village are farmers and arak producers, possessing skills and a livelihood inherited through the generations. “We do not have any idea when people in this village first started making arak. When we were born, it was already widespread,” said Wangsa. Arak is made from the coconut flower extract, which is collected in a drum filled with coconut husks to facilitate the fermentation process. many arak producers use a mixture of traditional and modern equipment, such as aluminum and bamboo pipes, plastic drums and traditional pots. The nira, or coconut flower extract, has to be good quality, well fermented and boiled for at least 10 hours then distilled to produce high quality arak. most of the arak produced in this village has an alcohol content of around 20 to 50 percent. each production session yields around 30 to 45 liters of arak, valued at around rp 400,000 (US$28.26). concerns have arisen about arak consumption in recent years since irresponsible people have chosen to add methanol and other contaminants to the arak in order to become inebriated more quickly. “The negative media coverage of deaths due to methanol poisoning from drinking arak has dramatically cut into sales of our traditional arak,” said Wayan martini. In his village in Sidemen, arak making is a cultural legacy. “The tradition of arak making has been passed down the generations and helps to sustain the local people’s quality of life,” he said. The police have taken to conducting raids on arak-producing villages to examine their produce and ensure it has not been contaminated with substances such as mosquito repellent, methanol, beer and energy drinks. In bali, arak has been produced for hundreds of years and plays an important role in social, cultural and religious traditions. as a religious tool, low quality arak mixed with water is often used in daily rituals. Arak is sprinkled on flower offerings, as well as used to appease evil spirits residing in human habitats. For young and old alike in bali, arak is a social lubricant that can melt away communication barriers between people. I Wayan lemes Indrawan, head of Telun Wayah duuran hamlet, said that the farmers and arak makers in the village would have to find sources of income other than arak making to support their families. “many of them raise cattle,” Indrawan said. However, it is important for the people in Tri eka buana village to preserve their centuries-old tradition of arak making.

or many professional and amateur surfers, balian beach offers a serenity found in few places on the island. located in lalanglinggah, West Selemadeg, in Tabanan regency, it is accessible from the main road between denpasar and Gilimanuk and is about a two-hour drive from ngurah rai International airport — around 60 kilometers. although is not well known, the balian beach’s dark sands and great waves are perfect for surfers. “many people also come here to meditate and for other spiritual activities as well,” said Pan Sintya, a resident of lalanglinggah village. The best time for surfing is early morning. “Surfers have to be ready before 8 a.m. when
the waves are at their best,” he said. The best surfing spot is in front of Warung Segara food stall. “There are three really good surf points here,” Sintya said, pointing at a spot in front of his food stall. The 200-meter long beach is becoming popular with tourists and surfers, “local people and outside investors have started to build villas, hotels and other types of accommodation here,” Sintya said. The beach is named after the local river, which flows into the sea here. For the locals, it is a place to find peace and to rejuvenate their tired bodies and minds after working all day catching fish, for tourists, it’s a place to ride the waves.

sea of white formed along the streets of Padangtegal village in Ubud on Tuesday as thousands of villagers, mostly dressed in white, escorted the wooden sarcophagus and cremation tower bearing the body of high priest Ida Pedanda Nabe Gede Manuaba to the cremation site. Born and raised in Padangtegal, he was the village’s first ordained Hindu high priest. Prior to his ordination, the village had to invite high priests from outside the village to officiate over any major religious or temple festival. The bull-shaped wooden sarcophagus

and lotus-shaped tower were also in white to reflect the status of the deceased as a senior high priest. The late priest had carried out his priestly duties for more than 50 years before passing away weeks ago at the age of 96. The title Nabe in his name indicates that he had ordained several high priests, including his two sons, one of whom, Ida Pedanda Gede Jungutan Manuaba, was tasked with setting the funeral pyre alight. Known as nanak (spiritual sons), these high priests marched in silence with their eyes cast downward behind the cremation tower.

This December, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Inc. announced it has redefined the future of family travel with new family programs at Le Méridien and Westin Hotels & Resorts globally. With growing global demand and evolving needs in family travel, family experiences are being reimagined for the way modern families travel, with any combination of parents, aunts, uncles and grandparents traveling with children of all ages. “Today’s family travelers are more active, more global and more socially connected than ever before,” said Brian Povinelli, global brand leader at Le Méridien and Westin Hotels & Resorts. “The new dream vacation – for many – looks like an active adventure, exploring new destinations and experiencing new cultures. To help us develop these new family programs, we also zeroed in on insights from our littlest travelers.” From interactive programming and signature amenities, to physical play spaces at many resorts, both programs celebrate “the Universal Language of Play”, where playing knows no borders or language barriers but is a vehicle to explore, learn, develop new skills, express ideas and build relationships with others. The Westin Family program draws inspiration from nature to promote a sense of wellbeing, while Le Méridien Family channels the inherent creativity and curiosity of children to unlock destinations through the brand’s Filters of Discovery—Coordinates, Culture and Cuisine.
