in this cut-throat competitive age, offering something new, fresh and attractive is the advantage any business needs to stay on the cutting edge. The tourist industry is no exception. The proliferation of infinity pools, raw food-inspired menus, beach clubs and butler service at the island’s tourist establishments is evidence of the continuous effort to transform, which is good for customers and the industry as a whole. This edition’s cover story focuses on an interesting innovation launched by a Seminyak establishment. A food truck serving signature local fusion tacos, including one with a babi guling (suckling pig) filling, will soon be parked in front of its lobby. This is aimed at attracting passersby and patrons alike by offering a new dining experience. Hopefully, it will achieve that objective and, thus, inspire other establishments to come up with their own innovations.

offee shops abound in southern Bali. They range from the basic roadside stall to artistic, funky sanctuaries where people natter or surf the net while sipping on one of the most widely drunk beverages in the world. If you enjoy decompressing from your busy urban life with a nice hot cup of coffee in a quiet café with pleasant music in the background, then Helman Coffee is not for you. This new venue has opened on the crowded and noisy Jl. Hassanudin and is a creative hub for youngsters in Denpasar. The people who flock here are looking for great coffee with dizzying rock and metal music in the background and they enjoy the busy traffic. “Visitors can feel three layers of sensations — Bang! Bang! Bang!” said Lugu Gumilar, when explaining the concept of his coffee shop, which he jointly operates with several friends — Irfan Affandi, Danu Andriyanto and Wayan Arista. Their mutual hobby of trying out new, quality coffee caused these old friends to come up with the idea of opening their own coffee shop. “I like sharing good coffee with friends. We often search for high quality coffee beans and buy from online traders.” When asked about the name of their venue, Lugu recalled that one day the group of friends had planned to dine at a restaurant in Seminyak. “There were no free tables left that night. Only one reserved table under the name Mr. and Mrs. Helmen was left. We thought that was a good name for our coffee shop.” So if you want to try new flavors of coffee in a starkly different atmosphere, Helmen Coffee is worth a visit. It opens daily from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

‘Melasti’ “A purification ritual for Pura Samuan Tiga” Words and photos Agung Parameswara

housands of people devotedly participated in the Melasti purification ritual recently, joining the long procession from Pura Samuan Tiga temple in Bedulu to Masceti Beach in Gianyar. The people gathered at the temple before dawn to start the ritual, which is conducted to cleanse the temple’s sacred paraphernalia, including the pratima (palanquin), the lion-shaped barong believed to guard the community and the demonic figure of Rangda. The procession took around five hours, a walk of around 25 kilometers, from the significant and historical temple to the beach at Masceti. The Melasti procession was part of a series of ceremonies preceding the Karya Agung Panca Wali Krama and Padudusan Agung grand ceremonies that will take place at Pura Samuan Tiga temple, located between Ubud and Tampak Siring palace. Tiga was built over 1,000 years ago. Samuan in the temple’s name means meeting, while tiga means three, so the name is translated as literarily meaning the “Meeting of the Three”. It was Mpu Kuturan who introduced the concept of Trimurti — the Hindu Trinity that embodies Brahma the creator, Wisnu the preserver and Siwa the destroyer. The sage was perceived as a unifier, bringing together influential people of diverse sects and family lineages to adopt the Trimurti Hindu concept, which was a monumental leap in the life of Balinese Hinduism and its people in the early 11th century. The meeting he brought about also resulted in the establishment of the Desa Pakraman (customary villages) and the three temples, or Pura Kahyangan Tiga, in every customary village in Bali. Each of the ceremonies held at Pura Samuan Tiga will serve as a strong reminder of the importance of the “Meeting of the Three” that has brought peace and harmony to the island of Bali.

t was a sentimental moment to witness the release of ten Javan porcupines, an endangered and protected animal, into the forest conservation area of Desa Adat Utu in Babahan village, Penebel, Tabanan regency. Working alongside Bali Environment and Animal Protection Agency (BKSDA), Bali Zoo released seven male and three female Javan porcupines that had been born and bred in the zoo since 2002 into their original habitat on April 14. Prior to the release, a special ritual was held at Pura Luhur Besi Kalung temple, located near the forest conservation area, to mark the transfer of the animals from Bali Zoo to the customary village of Utu. The temple priest sprinkled the ten porcupines and an eagle with holy water before releasing the animals into the forest. Emma Kristiana, head of Bali Zoo public relations, said the project was part of the zoo’s conservation program for endangered and protected animals endemic to Bali and other

parts of Indonesia. “Bali Zoo is collaborating with BKSDA and the Animal Preservation Center to carry out conservation efforts for protected and endangered species whose populations have fallen drastically because of poaching and hunting,” she said. With the release of the porcupines into the forest, the animals will be protected under the customary law, perarem, of Utu customary village. I Ketut Marthana, one of the caretakers of Besi Kalung village temple, stated that under the perarem, any individual found hunting or poaching the protected porcupines would be fined Rp 10 million (US$761.33). In addition, anyone who breaks the customary law must also perform the Guru Piduka ritual to ask for divine forgiveness at the temple. Animals are God’s creations and should be protected from extinction to maintain cosmic harmony.

efore Sanur became a busy tourist destination with luxury villas, resorts, cafés and restaurants, it was a quiet fishing village with pristine white sand beaches. Despite the rapidly growing tourism-related development, Sanur still has signs of its history, including at Blanjong, which used to be a small coastal hamlet in eastern Sanur. The name Blanjong is believed to have stemmed from two words — belahan (cracked) and ngenjung (vessel). Credence is given to this because the hamlet houses the island’s oldest inscription, Prasasti Blanjong, on a 1.77 meter-tall cylindrical stone pillar with a diameter of 62 centimeters. “The inscription includes the date of its writing, mentioning 913 AD. It also reveals the name of Bali’s king, Sri Kesari Warmadewa. Many believe it is a mark of the king’s victory,” explained 58-year-old Jero Mangku Mawa, the caretaker of the inscription. The inscription was written in two languages — pre-Nagari, an Indian language used for ancient Balinese, and Kawi, the old Javanese language. According to the inscription, it was written in 835 of the Balinese Caka lunar calendar, which corresponds to 913 AD in the Gregorian calendar. The use of the two languages marks the beginning of the Javanese and Indian influences on the kingdom of Bali and its people, with early Hinduism and Buddhism, as well as old Javanese and Indian cultures becoming familiar.

The Blanjong Inscription “A significant historical landmark in Sanur”

The Blanjong Inscription is now safely preserved in a glass enclosure. Because of its historical significance, the inscription is under the guardianship of the Archeology and Antiquities Agency, which covers areas in Bali, West and East Nusa Tenggara. Every day, both local people and visitors come to the site. The local people view it as a sacred place to pray and give offerings seeking safety and prosperity. Indonesian and international scholars frequently visit to conduct research and study the island’s history. The government has conducted renovations twice, in 1961 and 1988, to preserve this important archeological find. Numerous old statues and other items have also been found around Prasasti Blanjong.

fter thrilling competitions in Lombok and Java, Rip Curl continued its GromSearch for the best young surfers from all over Indonesia in Pererenan, Canggu, last weekend. GromSearch is the greatest opportunity in Indonesia for any young surfer, boy or girl, to make their surfing dreams come true. It is a worldwide series of events designed especially for young surfers or, to use the Australian term, groms. In a final on Sunday in the pumping surf of Pererenan, Raju Sena successfully held off Rip Curl Rider Ketut Agus’ radical attack to hold on to his second GromSearch title at this break in as many years.

For the under 16-year-old division, the final was a cage fight between the upstart Agus and the experienced Raju. But both surfed their own game. Agus, straight out of the gate, had the highest score of the heat, surfing with total abandon, hungry for the win. But it was a very clever, and steady, Raju who wore his opponent down with superior tactics, snagging two, long clean waves to outpoint his opponent by only 0.4 points. Meanwhile, the Under 14’s division dawned with bigger surf and this played right into Sumbawa’s Bronson Meidy’s bag of tricks. Bronson, already shouldering a big wave reputation, dominated the field with barrels and big 360 airs to leave the other competitors in his dust by an almost four point lead. But it was a completely different scene for the Under 12 division. For Pajar Ariana and Raina Ono, it looked like more of an expression session. Controlling the line-up just this side of intimidation, Ariana and Ono traded the best waves as if it were a Sunday picnic. Following this Bali competition, the GromSearch series juggernaut will continue in Bengkulu, West Sumatra, for its next stop. “We feel lucky to have nabbed the new Bengkulu venue”, said Rip Curl marketing director James Hendy. “We want the GromSearch to live up to its name as we look for Indonesia’s best young surfers. We want the whole archipelago to be represented and Sumatra is essential to this philosophy.” So with two remaining locations already

hand-picked in Sumatra and Sumbawa, this year’s GromSearch series will once again give the young surfers their shot at the big time. The winners of each regional competition are invited to the Indonesian national final, and the winners of that are then flown to the international grand finals, where they will face the hottest under 16 surfers from around the globe. Starting April 25, the van will be parked on the sidewalk just outside the Marriott property’s lobby on Jl. Camplung Tanduk, serving Mexican food with a local fusion twist in the fun and lively atmosphere of Seminyak. This food truck concept is expected to

attract passersby and provide a new way of accessing fresh, interesting and reasonably priced food, offering an innovative way to bring the food and beverage experience to younger generations in this popular hangout area. What The Truck! is a fully modified VW Combi van offering convenient takeaway drinks and bites with signature local fusion tacos, from babi guling, beef rendang and chicken pelalah, to fish. In the mornings, signature brews and the island’s Bootstrap Cold Brew coffee are

available, while in the evening local beers and ice-crushed mojitos will be added to the selection. In an effort to better engage with the local community, the process of creating the food truck involved collaboration with the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI) Denpasar. Students in the Faculty of Arts and Design were allowed to submit creative designs for the exterior of the truck to have the chance to have their art displayed permanently on the VW Combi and to win a total cash prize of Rp 40 million (US$3,044). After selecting from over 150 submissions, I Putu Yudhi Aditya, a fourth semester student majoring in Visual Communications Design, was announced the winner thanks to his design showing the lively and colorful atmosphere of Seminyak. Using a combination of authentic Balinese elements, references to the different morning and afternoon vibe that the truck offers, along with eye-catching cartoon illustrations with an iconic chef as the mascot, Yudhi’s design was chosen based on originality, creativity, relevance to the local market and presentation skills.

“It has been a long journey from launching the competition to getting this food truck painted with Yudhi’s design. We are excited to finally reveal the creativity of this talented young man along with introducing our newest innovative food and beverage option through What The Truck!”, said John Woolley, general manager Courtyard by Marriott Bali Seminyak. The truck was officially launched during a party held last Thursday evening in the lobby garden, where invitees and in-house guests could hardly wait for it to be uncovered. The fireworks, Balinese dancers and music lit up the party ambience as everyone waited to have their first food and beverages served fresh from the truck. With tacos in their hands, sipping on refreshing mojitos and cold brew coffee, the crowd enjoyed the merriment all evening. he small restaurants that line the area near Sakenan Temple in Serangan typically serve grilled cob fish; however, there is one here that offers a distinctive and more delicious grilled fish. Located on the west side, near the statue of Wayan Bulit, depicted as a fisherman carrying traditional fishing gear, Warung Becol stands out among the dozens of restaurants. From lunchtime up until the evening, this restaurant always has customers going in and out and the waiters are busy taking orders, weighing the fresh fish picked by their customers and grilling the fish. The price of each dish is based on the weight of the fish, at roughly Rp 80,000 (US$6) per kilogram. A selection of seafood is also available, including shrimp and crab. During busy hours, the wait for food can be

almost one hour. While waiting, customers can stroll along the street near the coast, where the traditional fishing boats are moored near the mangrove trees. In the afternoons, locals are usually seen flocking the area to hunt for crabs and clams. Customers who choose to stay put can order traditional snacks, like bulung (seaweed) served with shredded coconut, spicy sauce and peanuts, or rujak (sliced fruit in a spicy sauce) and es campur. But even for these, customers usually have to line up and wait. If you enjoy the environment, the wait doesn’t seem too long. After sightseeing or munching on snacks, the main course comes along — an approximately 1-kilogram fish covered in red spicy sauce. It tastes savory and a bit sweet. If you prefer, you can order standard grilled fish.

Sambal matah, the Balinese-style chili condiment that is a mix of chili, shallots, garlic, a bit of shrimp paste, a squeeze of lime and coconut oil, goes perfectly with this dish. Warung Becol seems to be the most popular among the small seafood restaurants in Serangan, thanks to word of mouth and social

media. A lot of netizens have posted positive reviews and comments about the restaurant, especially the great taste of the fish that is combined perfectly with the Balinese spices. Not only is it delicious, it is far cheaper than similar dishes served in Jimbaran.

“A painting exhibition offers a romantic narrative on Bali’s great king” Words and Photos I Wayan Juniarta

n ongoing exhibition at Bentara Budaya Bali in Ketewel reveals an accomplished painter’s personal interpretation of the life of one of Bali’s most revered kings. Titled “Prabu Udayana: Wiracarita dalam Rupa” (King Udayana: Epic in Form), the solo exposition presents a painting of “epic” dimensions, over 80-meters long, created by award-winning Balinese painter I Ketut Budiana. It took the 66-year-old artist four months to finish the painting. Dharma Udayana Warmadewa ruled Bali in the 10th century alongside his influential queen Mahendradatta, the daughter of East Java’s ruler Makutawangsawardhana. During their reign, the island of Bali enjoyed a period of peace and prosperity. With the assistance of the sage Mpu Kuturan, Udayana succeeded in inviting leaders from competing Hindu sects to the negotiation table. The meeting resulted in the formation of what later became known as Balinese Hinduism, the religious creed followed by the contemporary Balinese. “His marriage unified Bali and Java and his reign was marked with economic stability and religious harmony. He was a great ruler,” archaeology professor I Wayan Ardika said. Udayana left an ever-lasting impression on the island’s history. He was so revered that the island’s leading state university and regional military command were named after him.

“During the renovation of the university’s main conference hall, the idea of commissioning a painting on the life of Udayana crossed my mind. The painting would cover the four sides of the hall’s walls,” Udayana rector Professor I Ketut Suastika said. “It really surprised me that I Ketut Budiana agreed to do it since the university, obviously, did not have the funding to compensate for a maestro’s work.” The painting depicts four stages in Udayana’s life: his early education as a prince, his marriage and rule as a king, his solitary life as a hermit, and his final journey to spiritual freedom. The color palettes, the partially vacant landscapes, as well as the light brush strokes utilized by Budiana bear an aesthetic resemblance to those of classical Chinese paintings and work perfectly to imbue the painting with that poignant sense of historical romance. Born in 1950 in Padangtegal, a village east of Ubud, Budiana is a highly respected figure in the island’s fine arts landscape. Since 1999, he has

presented his works in numerous solo exhibitions, including in Melbourne and Tokyo, as well as joint exhibitions in Amsterdam’s Tropenmuseum, Germany, the US, Singapore and India. Budiana is the recipient of several important awards, including those bestowed by the

Cornish College of the Arts, La Trobe University and the Jakarta Fine Arts Foundation. The Bali administration acknowledged in 2008 Budiana’s cultural contributions by bestowing him with the island’s highest art accolade: the Dharma Kusuma.

S.K.A.I. Beach Club presents The Captain Cooked Party to celebrate its first anniversary on May 7 in collaboration with The Mad Hueys, Cybergroove Entertainment and Bali Clubbing. Hailed as a unique entertainment space, S.K.A.I. Beach Club will feature DJ Frost (Australia), Wreckshop, Good Grip, DJ Yoga Yin (Jenja Resident DJ), DJ Yuki featuring Mangrooves live set and DR. Willis to spin from dusk to dawn. This event is set to follow the success of previous events featuring globally renowned acts such as What So Not and DJ Yella of N.W.A. last year. The iconic lifestyle and surf brand The Mad Hueys is not only about fashion worn by A-list TV stars but also hosting parties at exclusive locations with famous celebrities in LA. Now, they are bringing the maddest fun to the island of Bali and partying within the expansive grounds of Padma Resort Legian at S.K.A.I. Bali Dynasty Resort will host the Europe on Screen film festival on April 30 and May 7 from 5 p.m. onwards in the resort’s front garden. The first of these open-air screenings will show a Dutch film, while a British film is reserved for the second event. Both events are free of charge and will promote the Dutch and British cultures. The events are also fundraising nights to raise money for Solemen, a charity program supported by Bali Dynasty Resort. Dutch or British owned/related businesses are invited to take part in the event by purchasing a stall, the proceeds of which go directly to charity. It is also an opportunity for social and business networking. Europe on Screen 2016 will take place from 29 April to 8 May in a number of cities across Indonesia. Previously known as the Europe Film Festival in its first debut in 1990, the event was a joint effort of the European diplomatic and cultural representations in Indonesia.
