PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN THE CHILTERNS 2018
Designer Wilson McWilliam Studio Maintenance Contractor Buckland Landscapes Suppliers Cotswold Stone Quarries, Deepdale Trees, Lovell Stone
Built for designers Gavin McWilliam MBALI and Andrew Wilson, this garden was full of challenges. The steeply sloping site is now terraced with substantial reinforced concrete retaining walls faced in brick or stone. The new levels, supported by the structural lines of pleached hedging, create greater privacy whilst the rejuvenation of hardscape and planting gives the garden a new lease of life. This is a relaxed and comfortable family garden that retains a sense of grandeur in keeping with the scale of the house. • See page 25 for full scheme details.
This total reconstruction of a high value private garden has been superbly executed with attention to detail dominant in every element of the landscape works. From the initial major earthworks and installation of attenuation drainage, to the high quality paving and walling used to create the new levels and terraces, the contractor has demonstrated the highest quality workmanship. The stunning planting schemes throughout a series of garden ‘rooms’, which include sculptures and water features, have also benefitted from the expert horticultural hands of the contractor. The realisation of the design of this beautiful private garden is a credit to the contractor, who is a worthy recipient of the 2018 BALI Grand Award.

LANGLEA GARDEN DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION VICTORIAN FLAVOUR 2018
Architect/Designer Langlea Garden Design & Construction Suppliers Chandlers Building Supplies, Evergreen Exterior Services, Greensquares Products, Milestone Supplies, Precision Metal Products
This newly created garden successfully combines a Victorian flavour with contemporary materials to provide another ‘room’ for a newly renovated Victorian house. Gnarled, mature olive trees add presence and provide privacy from neighbouring properties, and Victorianstyle panelling, reflecting the style of the kitchen and bi-fold doors leading to the garden, cleverly conceals a generously sized bike store where the client, a keen cyclist, can store his six bicycles securely and safely. Porcelain paving with refined detailing defines two gravel ‘comfort’ areas for the client’s dogs and mesh beneath the ground-level planted areas prevents them from digging up the plants. An in-situ concrete raised planter provides a backrest to a porcelain-clad seat with Victorian-style feet made from reclaimed balustrades. A feature brass backdrop enhances the planting.
Despite the challenges presented by the severely restricted access, the contractor has totally fulfilled the client’s brief and provided a captivating atmosphere for an outdoor living and entertaining space that combines relaxation with a unique storage solution for bicycles and equipment, transforming the client’s daily life. The simplicity of this beautifully executed scheme should not undermine the obvious care, skill and attention to detail demonstrated by the enthusiastic contractor.

Client Su and Jim Harwood Designer Sandstone Design Solutions Maintenance Contractor Client - Su Harwood Suppliers Grasslands, Lighting for Gardens, Provender Nurseries, Strata Stones, Travis Perkins
The small, north facing garden of this 400 yearold semi-detached cottage had proven to be a conundrum for the clients who wanted to maximise their living space. The contractor’s careful consultation, interpretation and engagement with the client throughout the design and build process opened up the garden, allowing it to be used all year round and at all times of day. An L-shaped seating area was created and a paved area at the top of the garden was laid to take advantage of the evening sun. Feature plants were carefully chosen to provide structure and to create a relaxed Mediterranean feel.

The clients wanted the space taken up by the derelict and redundant swimming pool in a courtyard of their Cotswold manor house returned to garden, making a more enjoyable and usable space. The contractor used waste rubble to infill the void and created a rill that cascaded into a smaller pond situated in a sunken seating area. Symmetrical planting to either side of the rill and around the outside of the courtyard softens the overall look of this new area of the garden.

THE LANDSCAPING CONSULTANTS ROSE BANK 2018
Client Chris Evangelou Designer Wendy Stokes Garden Design Maintenance Contractor Seasoned Gardeners
The transformation of the front and rear gardens of this Victorian property used both hard and soft landscaping to create a minimalist feel in line with the client’s aspirations and exacting wishes. The contractor worked with the designer to make adjustments to the original design to overcome potential root zone issues caused by an existing tree in the rear garden and a one hundred year old wisteria to the front of the house. The front garden is now a beautiful yet practical space. Almost 300mm depth of reinforced concrete had to be removed prior to work to create a resin-bonded permeable surface. Light stone pathways surround formal planting reflecting the symmetry of this double- fronted Victorian villa and giving access to a single car driveway. A stunning tiled pathway, with blue and cognac tiles, gives vibrancy to the front of the house. To the rear, two separate outdoor dining and relaxation areas have been created using porcelain ‘wood’ paving to complement the interior oak flooring on the ground floor. The brick boundary walls are a perfect backdrop for the formal, traditional planting palette.
The contractor has delivered a lovely scheme, which is an excellent example of quality landscaping, both hard and soft. Client, designer and contractor worked closely together to achieve a finished result that delivered on every aspect of the client’s brief whilst showcasing the very considerable abilities of this new contractor to the BALI Awards.

PWP LANDSCAPE DESIGN FARM HOUSE 2018
Architect/Designer PWP Landscape Design Suppliers Green-tech, Johnsons Wellfield, Nexus, Talasey Group, W E Leach Stone Sales
The clients’ 400 year old house is on a beautiful but exposed site and they wanted a garden that was in keeping with the period property, provided sheltered areas from the wind, and still retained the stunning views across the valley. Using local natural stone and recycling as many in situ materials as possible, the contractor constructed a series of walls and sunken seating areas using local Yorkstone, and built an arbor from recycled oak beams. The site has a culvert running through the garden into an existing natural pond. This was extended and slabs of Yorkstone used to create a surround.

The narrow outdoor space to the rear of this basement apartment near Earl’s Court has been completely transformed into a small but stylish Moroccan garden. Travertine paving, tile clad brick walls and a water pool and fountain create a relaxing atmosphere. A complete drainage system with bespoke drainage channel incorporating a lighting strip adds interesting detail. The contractor also constructed in-built seating and a timber clad covered area for relaxation. The scheme is completed with sympathetic planting.

LAND DESIGN PARTNERSHIP PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN GREENWICH 2018
Designer Green Cube Design Suppliers CED Stone Group, The Garden Trellis Company, London Stone, TreeBox, WWOO Kitchens
This complex project saw the contractor create an entirely new entertainment space to the rear of a Victorian townhouse in the Blackheath area of Greenwich, incorporating an outdoor kitchen, storage, play area, artificial grass and green walls. At the front entrance to the property the steps to the front door were refurbished with new Yorkstone treads and risers, artificial grass was installed, a bin store constructed, railings erected and soft landscaping completed. A delightful basement garden featuring Victorian-style tiles was also part of the project. With no exterior access to the rear garden, which is one floor lower than the front of the property, all materials had to be brought in and out through the house. The clients remained in residence throughout the build and so the contractor had to take up all dust sheets and floor protection on completion of each day’s work. Excellent communication between contractor, the clients and their neighbours ensured this simple yet lovely scheme was completed with minimum disruption.
© GREEN CUBE
Despite the challenges posed by the difficult access, the sense of pride, passion and care taken by the contractor during this build is tangible and the standards achieved are extremely high. This scheme exudes excellence with outstanding in-house craftsmanship across a broad range of skills, including beautiful brickwork, absolute precision with ‘cutting in’, and stunning detailing throughout.

PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN KENSINGTON 2018
Designer Neve Sanderson Garden Design Maintenance Contractor HG Landscapes Suppliers Everedge, The Garden Trellis Company, London Stone, Rolawn
This large, unusually-shaped rear garden of a terraced Victorian home has been completely redeveloped. What was formerly a building site and dumping ground has been transformed by the contractor, despite challenging access issues that required all materials to be craned onto site. Complex irrigation, drainage and lighting requirements were overcome and the garden now boasts an extensive ornamental lawn, summer house, potting shed, mower shed, paved areas, stepping stones, grass steps, gazebo, yew hedge and wilderness area, with soft planting throughout.
GRADUATE GARDENERS YORKSTONE TERRACE SCHEME 2018
Architect/Designer Graduate Gardeners Suppliers Rand & Asquith, Viridis, Winchcombe Reclamation
The existing terrace of this Cotswold manor house was too narrow and required extending to allow for entertaining larger groups of people. The new terrace had to blend in with the existing garden so that it looked as though it had always been part of the overall garden layout. To maximize space the contractor adjusted the levels using hidden blockwork construction detailing. Reclaimed York paving and Cotswold walling stone were incorporated with the existing York paving lifted from the original terrace to create a ‘weathered’ look, and a mixture of topiary and soft planting was used to link with the original formal garden below.

A large but uninspiring courtyard of Breedon gravel containing an isolated contemporary water feature has been completely transformed by the contractor to create a beautiful paved entertaining space for the client, complete with pizza oven and large Yorkstone preparation table cum breakfast bar. The design focuses on two central doors opening onto the courtyard from an oak corridor structure in the house. Four large beds with a catalpa and soft planting are laid out symmetrically in each corner of the paved area. The entrance to the house has been ‘framed’ using yews to one side and formal planters of topiary on the other.

This is an imposing courtyard created for a unique 15th century barn conversion. The design is sensitive to the historical sense of place whilst injecting new life and atmosphere. Reclaimed Yorkstone paving with yellow granite sett and copper detailing provides a stylish base for the courtyard. A bespoke oak pergola with glass roof leads out from the house to provide a space for alfresco dining. The central focal point is a copper bowl water feature. At the far end of the courtyard a spacious bespoke oak pergola with corrugated roof and antique mirror-clad fire table provides another lovely space for entertaining. Having demolished a property and repositioned the new house to maximise the view, the clients wanted a continuation of the garden into the wider landscape. A ‘serpentine’ paved terrace reflects the natural contour lines of the landscape beyond. The lawn rolls off this to the infinity edge where the boundary line blurs with the neighbouring field. A natural pond with a stream run and rocky outcrops is linked with Breedon gravel paths to a sitting area looking over the pond, surrounded with wildflower borders to imitate the adjacent landscape. The formal front garden with deep borders gives a Cotswold feel whilst softening the house and hard landscaping.

The gardens of this new-build house were completely redesigned to create a series of functional spaces. The existing paving was cleaned and re-used to form individual room areas for dining and relaxation. A section of dry stone walling defines a small raised area and a combination of hard materials, including Vande Moortel bricks as specified by the designer, have been used to define seating areas and walkways, complete with steel edging. The planting palette gives year round interest and colour and softens the house.

PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN THE CHILTERNS 2018
Designer Wilson McWilliam Studio Maintenance Contractor Buckland Landscapes Suppliers Cotswold Stone Quarries, Deepdale Trees, Lovell Stone
Built for designers Gavin McWilliam MBALI and Andrew Wilson, this garden was full of challenges. The contractor was faced with a 10m slope from one side of the garden to the other, requiring major earthworks and the creations of terracing using substantial reinforced concrete retaining walls faced in brick or stone. Traditional Chiltern Bovingdon bricks and contemporary Corten weathered steel have been sensitively used in the design. A comprehensive drainage and irrigation system was installed to allow the mature planting and wildflower areas to flourish. The new levels, supported by the structural lines of pleached hedging, create greater privacy whilst the rejuvenation of hardscape and planting gives the garden a new lease of life. This is a relaxed and comfortable family garden that retains a sense of grandeur in keeping with the scale of the house.
The contractor’s wide skill base has been put to excellent use in this challenging scheme. From the initial major earthworks required for the site’s preparation and the hardscaping techniques used, to the different soft landscaping areas including superb formal and wildflower planting, this garden showcases every possible skill required by the complete landscape contractor. An utterly beautiful scheme expertly delivered.

A 500,000 ft2 development of two landmark commercial buildings is set within an area of over two acres, 50 per cent of which is public realm. A unique destination and major amenity has been created through a series of new gardens set amongst the historic landmarks of the Roman city wall and St Alphage church tower ruins. Located on London Wall, between Moorgate and the Barbican, the gardens draw direct inspiration from the surrounding open spaces of the Barbican, St Alphage Garden, Salters Rose Garden and beyond. The urban setting creates varied microclimatic conditions across the site with the tall buildings casting intricate patterns of sun and shade, which change throughout the year. The lawns are located in the sunniest locations and planting design reflects varying levels of light and shade. The contractor supplied and installed all subsoil, topsoil, tree sands, trees, hedges, shrubs, herbaceous plants, bulbs, turf and mulch to bring the scheme to fruition. Close monitoring by the landscape architect and contractor post completion has ensured a high success rate for plant establishment.
This was a complex project for the contractor requiring excellent ground preparation because of the steep slopes involved. The soft landscaping looks beautiful and the area is a pleasure to sit in. Some extremes of shade and very high footfall present considerable challenges but the impressive selection of semimature tree specimens supplied, their careful planting and aftercare has created a lovely scheme.

The planting scheme for this approach to London’s iconic Wembley Stadium from Wembley Tube Station comprises ten matching pairs of 70cm girth trees sourced from three German nurseries. A Silva Cell system runs the entire length of the avenue on both sides and the contractor had to backfill each tree pit with manufactured subsoil and topsoil, position the trees with cranes and heavy plant, and secure each tree using the Deadman system. Despite the extremely heavy footfall along the Olympic Way during events, the trees are thriving.

The private landscaped grounds of this high-end, gated, residential development draw inspiration from nearby Holland Park, providing a green, naturalistic setting. A woodland belt of retained and new trees wraps around three sides to integrate the development with the adjacent park. A resplendent 30‑year‑old acer palmatum creates a grand and dramatic entrance with pleached hornbeams, ornamental planting and clipped hedging all adding to the sense of grandeur and elegance. A beautiful central courtyard, designed to feel mature and natural, provides a secluded and tranquil space. Off the central path, stepping stones meander through the naturalistic ornamental planting with concealed reflection pools. Externally, private planted and lawn terraces step up to the surrounding communal woodland walk with bluebells and ferns. Other landscaped areas include hedges to the private balconies and a number of bio-diverse green roofs. The contractor supplied and installed/planted all subsoil, topsoil, tree sands, Silva Cells, trees, hedges, shrubs, herbaceous plants, bulbs, turf and mulch, and constructed the green roofs. The design, supply and installation of a fully automatic irrigation system also formed part of the contract.

Client The Royal Ballet School Architect Bell Fischer Landscape Architects Suppliers CED Stone Group, Crowders Nurseries
The Royal Ballet School at White Lodge, to the north east of Richmond Park, is a Grade I Listed building located in a conservation area. It has a distinctive character that is sensitive to change. The main entrance to the school, reached through a sliding gate from Richmond Park, is used for car parking and deliveries. The changes to this area needed to reflect the historic building and the surrounding landscape, as advised by English Heritage, and both the layout and materials chosen had to be sympathetic to the setting. The works undertaken by the contractor included creating an interface between the building and the tarmacadam area, using low planting to help resolve drainage issues; the creation of a new parking area screened from view by hedging; and the opening up of views of the building and framing it with new planting. Challenges included ‘no dig’ construction under existing mature trees. The new scheme integrates beautifully with its local surroundings.
Although a relatively straightforward scheme, the contractor has embraced the sensitivity of the site and its surroundings to provide an entirely appropriate and impressive entrance to this prestigious facility. The groundworks and the installation of the hard landscaped parking areas and drive, including tarmac, gravel and setts, have been very competently executed, providing a sound framework for the soft planting.

THEATRE SQUARE, THE ROYAL NATIONAL THEATRE 2018
Client The Royal National Theatre Architect Haworth Tompkins Designer Gross. Max Suppliers Advanced Steel Fabrication, BBS Granite Concepts, Capri Mechanical Services, Kingsley Roofing (London), Tuffbau Steintec
Located on London’s South Bank and busy thoroughfare The Queen’s Walk, the Royal National Theatre is one of the UK’s three most prominent, publicly-funded performing arts venues, alongside the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Opera House. As part of the NT Future project, the refurbishment of Theatre Square followed the removal of The Shed, a monolithic red box clad entirely with rough-sawn timber boards that served as a temporary theatre. The contractor carried out all external works, including the design of reinforced concrete security barriers, surface water drainage systems, liquid-applied tanking/waterproofing, new waterproofing above existing basement slab, new steps and handrails, the refurbishment of existing banner masts and paving, furniture and mechanical and electrical installations, including the lighting of banner masts. The project presented the contractor with complex access constraints as the theatre remained in operation throughout the works, requiring deliveries of all materials to be completed either early in the morning or late at night as nothing could be stored on site.
The deceptively simple design of this scheme belies the logistical planning and contractor competence required to bring it to fruition. Maintaining public access throughout the works, dealing with ‘ just in time’ deliveries, and maintaining high standards in the installation of all hard landscaping elements has been very successfully achieved to the client’s complete satisfaction by an extremely competent contractor.

Built on land previously occupied by Royal Mail’s central delivery office, close to Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road in London’s popular shopping and theatre districts, Rathbone Square is one of Central London’s largest mixed-use developments in recent years and home to Facebook’s UK headquarters. The 1800m2 publiclyaccessible podium garden, designed by Gustafson Porter + Bowman, lies at its heart. The landscaping works were carried out alongside ongoing building construction work and comprised the design development of two large water tables, the design of water channels and integration with the Canadian Picasso granite planters, reinforced concrete structures for raised planters, construction using Azul European granite paving, and retaining structures on different levels for planting and paving. Climbing plants grown off site were installed on stainless steel trellis. With no storage available on site all materials were delivered on a just-in-time basis to off-loading areas.
Although the contractor had to work on a tight, restricted site, often at night, with building construction work continuing and with no room to store materials, the finish on this hard landscaping scheme is superb and perfectly reflects the high standards demanded by an exacting client. Technically faultless, the project bears all the quality hallmarks for which the contractor is renowned.

CALVERLEY ADVENTURE GROUNDS, ROYAL TUNBRIDGE WELLS 2018
Architect/Designer LUC Maintenance Contractor Ground Control Suppliers Alpha Rail, Boningale Nurseries, Redlynch, Timberplay, Trustseal
Calverley Grounds is an historic and popular public park in Tunbridge Wells. The original bowling green that was added as an extension to the Grounds in 1923 had been disused since 2005 and became gradually more dilapidated. The local community unanimously agreed that a children’s play area would be the best use for the land. Each stage of planning, design and fundraising to create Calverley Adventure Grounds has been carried out by members of the community and in just one year they raised £250,000 to build a bespoke play area based on the evolution of the town. So successful was their fundraising model that they have made it widely available to other community groups. The works undertaken by the contractor, who worked extremely closely with the community representatives, involved site preparation, provision of a new water supply from the existing pavilion to feed the new playground pump with soakaway, path and safety surface construction works, topsoiling to create planting areas integrating site won and imported materials, turfing, supply of shrubs to be planted by volunteers from the community, installation of a timber bridge, boulders, timber feature steps, fencing and gate for the play area, and installation of all play equipment.
The contractor’s project team is to be congratulated on embracing this unique community project; it is an absolutely cracking scheme. The landscaping construction and installation works have been carried out to an excellent standard with the contractor going the extra mile to reflect the community’s determination to make this playground as good as it could be.

Famous as the home of the legendary RAF 617 Dambusters Squadron in 1944/45, The Petwood Hotel also boasts gardens designed in 1912 by celebrated designer Harold Peto. Although located in the heart of Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, for over 100 years the historic gardens had fallen into disrepair and been subject to vandalism and theft of original seats, sculptures and urns. Only basic maintenance was being undertaken to ensure safety. The owners wanted to restore and upgrade the historic gardens as they had been designed and originally realised in 1913/14. With the hotel remaining open throughout the works, the contractor rebuilt the Temple of Atalanta, installing a new stone temple with cast iron domed roof, new floor slabs and steps. The Long Walk paving was removed, restored and blended, and the Horley Festoon was reinstated, drainage installed and lawns re-laid. Flowerbeds were re-established, the fountain refurbished, paving re-laid and balustrading rebuilt on the rear terrace. Paving was also removed and re-laid to install drainage in the Dutch sunken garden, turf was replaced and the fountain here also refurbished. The contractor worked solely from historical photographs to resurrect the gardens.
Undertaken in part within tight time frames with the contractor working around the demands of a functioning hotel, this project has benefited from very sympathetic restoration work that reflects quality workmanship, good re-use of existing materials, and careful attention to reinstating the theme of the original gardens from good historical records.

Elephant Park sits on the site of the former Heygate Estate. The flats were demolished between 2011 and 2014, marking the beginning of the regeneration of the Elephant and Castle area of South London. Green space is at the heart of this £2.3 billion regeneration project and the contractor’s work at Elephant Park forms part of Phase One of the green space development. Once complete it will be the largest new green space in Central London for 70 years and will support the sustainability goals of the regeneration. Works undertaken by the contractor included path construction with surfacing and paving, play surfacing, installation of FSC certified timber sleepers and Corten sleeper borders, installation of play equipment and street furniture, creation of rain garden areas, tree planting, soft landscaping, and the installation of irrigation, lighting, power and CCTV services.
The good working relationship between the client, landscape architect and contractor has produced a high quality scheme. Despite the challenges of shared access routes for site deliveries with other contractors and a complex working environment, the contractor has completed all hard and soft landscaping works to a very high standard creating a beautiful urban park that has already begun to regenerate this formerly deprived area of London.

The Hawkhills in the Vale of York has a fascinating history and is home to The Emergency Planning College, which is approved by the Civil Contingencies Secretariat of the Cabinet Office to deliver training to assist with organisational resilience. Operated by Serco it is also a popular venue for weddings, conferences, team building and corporate away-days, training events, charity functions, social events and meetings. The grounds maintenance contract comprises grass cutting, bedding displays, hedge and shrub maintenance, tree maintenance, leaf clearance, weed control, road sweeping, and snow and ice clearance and gritting. The site is maintained by one operative and an apprentice who, despite a limited budget, are reinvigorating formerly neglected areas through a programme of shrub and plant replacement, with a number of the plants being propagated on site. Additionally, overgrown woodland areas are being slowly opened up for walkers and runners.
The contractor has done a great deal to improve standards in the grounds of this important venue. Client satisfaction is high and they are aware that as standards increase so staffing and budgets must follow to maintain the overall look of the site. Regardless, this is a very impressive scheme and a credit to the efforts of the contractor’s on-site staff.

JOHN NASH MBALI AND BUCKLAND LANDSCAPES FROM PIT TO PICTURE 2018
Maintenance Contractor Dave Parrott Suppliers AJ Lighting, Boot & Dart, CED Stone Group, Europlants UK, Watermatic
This two-acre garden slopes steeply up from an unmade track. The design had to include a swimming pool, tennis court, woodland garden, Japanese garden, pond, lawn, living wall, roof terrace garden, outdoor kitchen/dining, leisure and relaxation areas. A journey through linked areas provides views and surprises. Part of the design concept was inspired by classical Italian/Roman, particularly Villa Adriana, which ‘framed’ large rectangular areas with elevated terminal features. The steeply sloping rear bank leads to open country and is transitioned with irregularly shaped beds with grasses and bisected with bands of mown grass. Contemporary entrance gates between pillars echo a nearby church and lead, via a resurfaced drive, into the front garden and up to the front of the house. Spring bulbs, pine and birch trees augment existing planting and the sides of the drive now boast an avenue of whitebeam and rhododendron. The contemporary front of the house is planted with topiary, augmented with boulders, leading into a Japanese-style garden featuring a meandering diamond path over a stream cascading down into a pond. Mounds formed from excavated material from the house reconstruction contain grasses.
The excellent collaboration between designer and contractor on this extensive and beautiful scheme is clear to see. Working with exacting clients, and at the same time as the house was being re-built, the contractor has executed the design with great care and attention to detail, achieving incredibly high standards. The designer has interpreted the client’s eclectic brief in an imaginative and creative way, delivering a scheme that is full of interest.

The route through the garden includes an extended pergola, a large summerhouse with veranda, raised accessible vegetable beds, occasional seating areas, lawns and a small meadow. Bold planting blends with traditional in the woodland areas. The garden is subtly lit throughout.

BLAKEDOWN SPORT AND PLAY ARCHBISHOP PARK 2018
Client London Borough of Lambeth Architect Blakedown Sport and Play Designer The Sports Construction Consultancy
A public park for over a century, Archbishop Park’s sports facilities were looking tired and scruffy and were not being used. The client, the London Borough of Lambeth, prepared the initial design brief and following public consultation it was then tendered with the successful contractor taking final responsibility for completing the design and undertaking the works. These comprised demolishing and removing the existing sports facilities; stripping out the existing building to a shell, ready for a complete re-fit; organising and providing new incoming mains services; creating a new landscape setting for the facilities with LED overhead lighting, hardwood bespoke seating, paths, access road, turfing and planting; installing a life-size bronze sculpture of Lizzie Lambert, who once ran a tuck shop on the site, to symbolize human kindness; completely refitting the old building to provide changing facilities, showers, toilets, a kitchen, community facilities with an external deck for functions and seating; installing a thirdgeneration sand and rubber all-weather sports pitch to FIFA and World Rugby standards, floodlit and with a sports fencing system to include spectator and storage areas; installing a separate tennis court, fenced and floodlit; and providing facilities for cricket practice with a 3-bay, fully netted bowling and batting area.
What a transformation! This project has revitalized the park and the sports facilities are now incredibly well used. The contractor has gone the extra mile to engage with the project and deliver a community facility that meets a host of needs and uses. All elements have been very professionally installed and showcase the range of skills required of today’s specialist landscape contractor.

This project, which was initiated though The Royal Parks with Sport England support, aimed to increase usage of the sports pitch area of Regent’s park by replacing the soil-based natural turf pitch with a state-of-the-art hybrid carpet football pitch, the first constructed for ‘grass roots’ football. The contractor worked with sports surface consultants TGMS on its construction and the new pitch has exceeded all expectations, retaining its green aesthetic appearance throughout its first winter and continuing to be a good consistent playing surface. As all works were undertaken while the park was open, careful traffic management was vital to ensure safe project completion with minimal disruption to the park’s operation.

Aprons & Hammers is an award-winning, upscale seafood restaurant situated on the north side of Dubai in a prime location on a newly opened world-class leisure and entertainment hub by the beach called ‘La Mer, Jumeirah’. The restaurant is an inspiring venue, with its uninterrupted views of the Arabian Gulf and the iconic Dubai city skyline. The client’s brief was to provide two curved living green walls with a combined area of 40m2. They wanted a green wall that would have a beautiful mix of colours, a lush feel without being too busy, and that would blend with the industrial design concept of the space, creating a main focal point without taking up valuable floor space. The contractor completed the wall in 30 days, well ahead of schedule.
This is a very nice scheme that uses the living walls to line the back walls of the restaurant. The contractor designed the water drip trays to be concealed behind curved seating with an integrated access panel for maintenance. The choice of plants works well and the skillful arrangement directs the eye to a central point. The client is very pleased with the scheme, trusting the contractor with future installations in two new branches of the restaurant.

In response to the Brinkworth vision the contractor has developed a bespoke store greening system. A series of narrow stainless-steel planters suspended at ceiling level and planted with carefully chosen plants, sustained in a semi-hydroponic condition. Controlled watering using the contractor’s own ‘smart’ irrigation system allows the plants to thrive and create a green canopy without the need for drainage. To date the ceilings have been installed in London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Cologne, Vienna, Paris, Berlin and New York and will be rolled out to other Asics locations across the globe.

Once home to Fry’s, one of the nation’s favourite chocolate brands, The Chocolate Quarter in Bristol is now a stylish development of retirement apartments and a care home. Part of the buildings’ refurbishment included the construction of five new roof gardens at first and second floor level. The works undertaken by the contractor included creating steel plant beds, soft landscaping, installation of pergolas and new furniture, and the installation of paving, irrigation and water features. Lack of space on site and access restrictions imposed by working on the first and second floor meant that the project team had to plan the schedule of works carefully to manage the flow of materials, which had to be craned into position.
GARDEN CLUB LONDON JAM FACTORY 2018
Designer/Maintenance Contractor Garden Club London Suppliers Creepers Nursery, Landscapeplus, London Stone, Southgate Timber
This residential roof terrace on top of the original Hartley’s Jam Factory in Southwark, occupies an open aspect with stunning city views. The original scheme needed upgrading, including retaining a unique concrete and timber mix bench. The design comprises a small outdoor kitchen area, dining space with panoramic views and secluded lounge seating. Thoughtful material selection will ensure the garden’s longevity and is aesthetically pleasing with a look, feel and finish that sits comfortably with the well-appointed property. Limed oak effect composite millboard flooring works well with naturally aged iroko used for capping and furniture details. A selection of evergreen pinus cloud trees provides wind tolerant structure and colourful perennials and aromatic herbs give seasonal interest.

BEIJING TSINGHUA TONGHENG URBAN PLANNING AND DESIGN INSTITUTE DESIGN FOR CHILDREN – YA’AN PANDA GREEN ISLAND PARK LANDSCAPE DESIGN
2018
Client Ya’an Development Investment Co. Architect/Designer Beijing Tsinghua Tongheng Urban Planning and Design Institute Main Contractor Chengdu Jin Xi Garden Greening Engineering Co.
Ya’an, which is 115km from Chengdu, is on the western edge of the Sichuan Basin, a lowland region in southwestern China surrounded by mountains. Panda Green Island Park is located on Shuizhongba Island, at the intersection of Ya’an new and old cities, and covers 16.94 hectares. The planners’ objectives were to create a comprehensive park that blended into the surrounding landscape and ecology and that was properly adapted to the local climate, culture and lives of Ya’an’s citizens, focusing on children’s growth needs. Four key strategies drove the planning process: 1. Ecological foundation - to create micro-topography for building up a stone stream LID system throughout the park; 2. Rational layout - the entire park is divided into six functional areas; 3. Core framework – provided by the iconic “Rain Corridor”; 4. Design for children - the panda playground is specially designed for children and is spoken highly of by residents, particularly in terms of its beneficial social impact, which exceeds government expectations. Public recognition and the success of Panda Green Island Park have encouraged city decision-makers to begin promoting measures to improve children’s living environment.
This park is a kaleidoscope of vibrant colour that celebrates children and the Giant Pandas that are indigenous to this area of China. Native trees and shrubs have been used throughout the park and a ‘rain corridor’ provides shelter from the heavy winter rains and the hot summer sun. The panda playground is a vibrant, engaging space for children of all ages. This lovely scheme works with the local climate and enhances the lives of Ya’an’s citizens.

Meiren Park is located at former site of Meiren Palace, the core area of Xiamen’s old downtown. With a history going back centuries it used to be the city’s cultural centre. With the progress of urbanization, the memories unique to these sites have vanished gradually and been replaced by a densely populated area with an extreme shortage of public space for citizen activities. Meiren Park has been created using local materials based on the history of the site. Adopting several art forms, the project represents the changing of the site over centuries and presents new opportunities for artistic expression of local cultural inheritance.

Situated in Petrispark in the German town of Trier, the Xiamen Garden blends the charm of Eastern landscapes into a Western garden, which reflects the Eastern philosophical spirit of ‘inclusiveness and co-existence’ and the outlook of Chinese Taoists on the universe and life, achieving an integration and resonance of Eastern and Western cultures. The project is an important witness to the exchange between Xiamen and Trier, and it is hoped that the park will be a place where Chinese and Western cultures merge and collide.

The client brief was to transform the dull and uninspiring small rear garden of their modern, semi-detached home to provide an attractive private space that linked the house to a garden room in their converted garage. The designer created a terraced area immediately adjacent to and at the level of the rear of the house for outdoor entertaining and used retaining walls with integral planted areas to address the slope up to the garden room, creating two further terraces and steps to allow easy circulation throughout the garden. The use of granite paving, rendered walls and soft contemporary planting give the garden year-round interest.
This confident design fully met the client’s brief and reflects the care taken by the designer to get it absolutely right. Her attention to detail, both in the hard landscaping elements and in the plant selection, which will give structure and interest throughout the year, is in evidence across the design and in its implementation. The client is extremely happy with the entire project process, from inception to completion.

TRANQUIL CHESHIRE GARDEN 2018

The brief was to create a masterplan for the front and rear gardens of a modern detached property in Wilmslow, Cheshire. The clients, a retired couple, wanted a low maintenance, contemporary garden, with a strong focus on clean lines but with plenty of seasonal interest. The hard landscaping needed to accommodate afternoon and evening entertaining, with consideration to the movement of the sun during the day. The clients specified different areas of seating for different functions and modern features including a fire table and a piece of sculpture. The high quality paving was to be sleek but robust. One of the driving elements of the garden style was the furniture, which needed to reflect the modern interior and exterior of the house. The planting was to be unusual but very ‘neat and tidy’, with plenty of evergreen structure, coloured foliage and some flowering interest.
This is a very strong and confident design, working well with the property and fully meeting the clients’ brief. Extremely good attention to detail in the hard landscaping and the beautiful and restrained planting has created a lovely setting for the house and for entertaining.

A lover of contemporary art, the client wanted a garden of vibrant colours and dramatic impact. The new entrance courtyard includes a Portuguese cobble tapestry leading to a striking sculpture to balance the entrance to the house. Parking is screened from the house and generous planting provides a gracious entrance in keeping with the setting. The park-side garden was re-sculpted to include a ha-ha linking the garden to the fabulous views across the park. A reclaimed Yorkstone entertaining terrace leads down to a sunken croquet lawn and wildflower meadow beyond. The orangery garden is a contemporary interpretation of an historic parterre to be seen partly from above and also from within.
This is a really lovely scheme that softens the house and gives it a wonderful setting that links to the surrounding countryside. The attention to detail shown in the hard landscaping elements is terrific and fabulous swathes of planting reflect the colours of the client’s artworks. Beautiful touches, such as the subtle delineation to reduce the level of the ornamental lawn, are simple yet sophisticated. The client is, understandably, delighted.

Part of the design concept was inspired by classical Italian/ Roman, particularly Villa Adriana, which ‘framed’ large rectangular areas with elevated terminal features. The contemporary front of the house is planted with topiary, augmented with boulders, leading into a Japanesestyle garden featuring a meandering diamond path over a stream cascading down into a pond. Mounds formed from excavated material from the house reconstruction contain grasses.

The clients wanted a complete overhaul to both front and rear gardens of their new build house to create an impressive contemporary garden with the ‘wow’ factor. The design is elegant and minimalist with contemporary clean lines and requiring a relatively low level of maintenance. It serves equally for relaxation and as a party space, an area that works beautifully from day through into night, and a space that flows seamlessly from house to garden, both physically in movement and visually.

LANGLEA GARDEN DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION VICTORIAN FLAVOUR 2018
Architect/Designer Langlea Garden Design & Construction Suppliers Chandlers Building Supplies, Evergreen Exterior Services, Greensquares Products, Milestone Supplies, Precision Metal Products
This newly created garden successfully combines a Victorian flavour with contemporary materials to provide another ‘room’ for a newly renovated Victorian house. Gnarled, mature olive trees add presence and provide privacy from neighbouring properties, and Victorian-style panelling, reflecting the style of the kitchen and bi-fold doors leading to the garden, cleverly conceals a generously sized bike store where the client, a keen cyclist, can store his six bikes securely and safely.
As a new BALI Registered Contractor, Langlea Garden Design and Construction has demonstrated what can be achieved when an innovative approach is taken to finding workable design and construction solutions. This small, simple, yet hugely attractive garden delivers on all levels, providing a lovely area for relaxation and solving the client’s storage issues. Additionally, the quality of the construction is exemplary. The contractor has set the bar very high at the start of their BALI membership and can be extremely proud of their achievements.

SANDSTONE DESIGN SOLUTIONS UPLANDS COTTAGE 2018
Client Su and Jim Harwood Designer Sandstone Design Solutions Maintenance Contractor Client - Su Harwood Suppliers Grasslands, Lighting for Gardens, Provender Nurseries, Strata Stones, Travis Perkins
The small, north facing garden of this 400 year-old semi-detached cottage had proven to be a conundrum for the clients who wanted to maximise their living space. The contractor’s careful consultation, interpretation and engagement with the client throughout the design and build process allowed the creation of a haven that can be used all year round and at all times of day. Considerable access difficulties were overcome allowing the removal of the existing paving, walls and raised beds of soil. This opened up the side of the garden to light and created space for the L-shaped seating area to be built. The paved area at the top of the garden was laid to take advantage of the evening sun. By building the seating area using individually cut, recycled paving slabs to achieve random thickness and the existing sandstone, the walls now resemble a dry stone wall, tying together the old and contemporary nature of this most practical and usable space – and all while being sympathetic to the age of the enclosed surroundings and sensitive to the environmental impact. Feature plants were carefully chosen to provide structure, and the client did much of the planting to create a relaxing Mediterranean feel throughout.
This is a beautifully executed scheme that reflects the contractor’s determination to understand and implement fully the clients’ vision. Working closely with the clients and taking a very flexible approach, the contractor has created a beautiful space on a modest budget to exacting standards. The attention to detail and the quality of the workmanship is faultless. This project fully illustrates the qualities required of a design and build contractor and Sandstone Design Solutions is a worthy recipient of this Special Award.

BEST FIRST-TIME ENTRANT
MATT NICHOL MBALI TRANQUIL CHESHIRE GARDEN 2018
Suppliers Ladybrook Nursery, Silva Timber, Stonemarket, Rivelin, Urban Trees
Matt Nichol has demonstrated excellent design ability with this lovely garden and an understanding of the importance of taking the BALI Awards adjudication panel on a journey through the design process to the realisation of that design. As a first-time entrant to the Awards he has successfully pitted himself against his peers, showing in his entry submission the same level of professional excellence that shines through his entry design and the constructed scheme.
