from the editor

welcome to

Bali

Tourists, Travelers, & Adventure-seekers... If you’re coming to Bali to find some culture, then you have to catch a coming-of-age ritual where bare-breasted local village boys partake in friendly duels with each other. Called the Perang Pandan War Dance or “Mekare-Kare” this event takes place annually around this time of the year in the village of Tenganan in East Bali and it’s something you really don’t want to miss! Other cultural events to take note of are the Bali Kite Festival in Sanur and the Mekepung Buffalo Races in West Bali. Do check out our Don’t Miss page for more cultural events happening this month. And while you’re at it, do have a look at our Review pages; you’ll find an interesting African safari escape right in the heart of Bali at Bali Safari and Marine Park. One of our favourite private estates and villas, Kayumanis Jimbaran, is opening a new restaurant soon featuring authentic Indonesian and Balinese delicacies. Since we’re on the subject of food, this month’s issue is full of it! We’ve got one of Legian’s classic favourites, Kori Restaurant & Catering and Ryoshi House of Jazz for Japanese. And Chinese? Yes, we’ve got Happy Chappy Chinese with a new and exciting announcement. Not to be outdone, Courtyard by Marriott Bali Seminyak also recently just launched their amazingly successful VW Combi Foodtruck, “What The Truck!” and they want you to know all about it. Beauty is a topic that can never be forgotten, and this month, Ultimo Aesthetics & Dental Care is having a July promotion with great discounts on a variety of treatments. So don’t miss out on anything, there are always great deals and promotions around to help you maximize your holiday in Bali, as you can see in our What’s New and Hot Deals page. It’s the start of the windy season and although these are usually Bali’s dry months, heavy rainfalls have been observed around the evenings and nights. Regardless, Bali is always fun, wet or dry. Till next time, Om Swastiastu and welcome to Bali!

about bali

Beautiful Island With a reputation as one of the most beautiful and diverse tourist spots in Asia, Bali annually attracts almost 7,000,000 visitors yearly from around the world. Photo Courtessy of Rustian Aditya Nugraha

Geographically, situated between the islands of Java and Lombok, Bali is small, stretching approximately 140 km from east to west, and 80 km from north to south. The tallest of a string of volcanic mountains that run from the east to the west is Gunung Agung, which last erupted in 1963. Located just 8º south of the Equator, Bali boasts a tropical climate with just two seasons (wet and dry) a year with an average temperature of around 28ºC. The wide and gently sloping southern regions play host to Bali’s famed rice terraces, which are among some of the most spectacular in the world. In the hilly, northern coastal regions, the main produce is coffee, copra, spices, vegetables, cattle and rice. The Balinese have strong spiritual roots and despite the large influx of tourists over the years, their culture is still very much alive. The main religion is Agama Hindu Dharma, which, although originally from India, is comprised of a unique blend of Hindu, Buddhist, Javanese and ancient indigenous beliefs; It is very different from the Hinduism practiced in India today. Naturally creative, the Balinese have traditionally used their talents for religious purposes and most of the beautiful work to be seen here has been inspired by stories from the Ramayana and other Hindu epics.

The majority of Bali’s 4,000,000 people live, for the most part, in tight village communities with large extended families. The largest cities are Denpasar (the capital) and Singaraja in the north. The main tourist area stretches from Kuta to Seminyak. Kuta became a major attraction during the tourist boom of the 70’s because of its famous white-sand beaches, the surf, and stunning sunsets. Today, the stretch from Kuta to Seminyak is a major tourist destination, with hundreds of hotels, bars, restaurants and shops. Those in search of a little peace and quiet tend to head for the more serene resorts of Sanur and Candi Dasa on the east coast, or Lovina in the north. Nusa Dua, on the southern-most peninsula of the island, houses many five-star hotels. The central village of Ubud, in the hilly region of Gianyar, has also blossomed as a tourist attraction and is now considered to be the artistic and cultural centre of Bali.

culture

Beautiful Culture By the Bronze era, around 300 B.C., a fairly evolved culture already existed on Bali. The complex system of irrigation and rice production, still in use today, was established around this time.

Photo Courtessy of Bali Plus In Your Hand

It appears that the main religion around 500 A.D. was predominantly Buddhist in influence. In 670 A.D., a Chinese scholar (Yi-Tsing), on a trip to India, reported that he had visited a Buddhist country called Bali. It wasn’t until the 11th century that Bali received the first strong influx of Hindu and Javanese cultures. With the death of his father around AD 1011, the Balinese Prince, Airlanggha, moved to East Java and set about uniting it under one principality. Having succeeded, he then appointed his brother, Anak Wungsu, as ruler of Bali. During the ensuing period there was a reciprocation of political and artistic ideas. The old Javanese language, Kawi, became the language used by the aristocracy, one of the many Javanese traits and customs adopted by the people. With the death of Airlanggha, in the middle of the 11th century, Bali enjoyed a period of autonomy. However, this proved to be short-lived, as in 1284 the East Javanese King Kertanegara, conquered Bali and ruled over it from Java. In 1292, Kertanegara was murdered and Bali took the opportunity to liberate itself once again. However, in 1343, Bali was brought back under Javanese control by its defeat at the hands of Gajah Mada, a general in the last of the great Hindu-Javanese empires, the Majapahit. With the spread of Islam throughout Sumatra and Java during the 16th century, the Majapahit empire began to collapse and a large exodus of aristocracy, priests, artists and artisans to Bali ensued. For a while Bali flourished and the following centuries were considered the Golden Age of Bali’s cultural history. The principality of Gelgel, near Klungkung, became a major centre for the arts, and Bali became the major power of the region, taking control of neighbouring Lombok and parts of East Java.

The European Influence

The first Dutch seamen set foot on Bali in 1597, yet it wasn’t until the 1800’s that the Dutch showed an interest in colonising the island. In 1846, having had large areas of Indonesia under their control since the 1700’s, the Dutch government sent troops into northern Bali. In 1894, Dutch forces sided with the Sasak people of Lombok to defeat their Balinese rulers. By 1911, all the Balinese principalities had either been defeated in battle, or had capitulated, leaving the whole island under Dutch control. During World War II, the Dutch were expelled by the Japanese, who had occupied Indonesia from 1942 to 1945. After the Japanese defeat, the Dutch tried to regain control over their former colonies, but on August 17, 1945, Indonesia was declared independent by its first President, Sukarno. After four years of fighting and strong criticism from the international community, the Dutch government finally ceded and, in 1949, Indonesia was recognized as an independent country. The People

Life in Bali is very communal with the organisation of villages, farming and even the creative arts being decided by the community. The local government is responsible for schools, clinics, hospitals and roads, but all other aspects of life are placed in the hands of two traditional committees, whose roots in Balinese culture stretch back centuries. The first, Subak, concerns the production of rice and organises the complex irrigation system. Everyone who owns a sawah, or padi field, must join their local Subak, which ensures that every member gets his fair share of irrigation water. The other community organisation is the Banjar, responsible for arranging all village festivals, marriage ceremonies and cremations. Most villages have at least one Banjar and all men have to join when they marry. Banjars, on average, give membership to 50 up to 100 families and all Banjars have their own meeting place called the Bale Banjar. As well as being used for regular meetings, the Bale (pavilion) is where the local gamelan orchestras and drama groups practice. Religion

Balinese people are Hindu, yet their religion is very different from the Indian variety. The Balinese worship the Hindu trinity Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu, who are seen as manifestations of the Supreme God Sanghyang Widhi. Other Indian gods like Ganesha (the elephant-headed god) also appear, but more commonly. Shrines associated with the many gods and spirits, uniquely Balinese, are found all over the island. Balinese people strongly believe in magic and the power of spirits, basing much of their religion on this. They believe good spirits dwell in the mountains and that the seven seas are home to demons and ogres. Most villages have at least three main temples, namely: (1) the Pura Puseh, or ‘temple of origin’, facing the mountains; (2) the Pura Desa, or village temple normally found in the centre; and (3) the Pura Dalem, aligned with the sea and dedicated to the spirits of the dead. Aside from these ‘village temples’, almost every house has its own shrine. Some temples, for example Pura Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung, are considerably more important and people from all over Bali travel there to worship. Offerings play a significant role in Balinese life as they appease the spirits and thus bring prosperity and good health to the family. Every day small offering trays (canang sari), containing symbolic food, flowers, cigarettes and money, are respectfully put on shrines, in temples, in front of houses and shops, and at dangerous crossroads. Festivals are another great occasion for soothing the gods. The women carry huge, beautifully arranged pyramids of food, fruit and flowers on their heads while the men might conduct a blood sacrifice through a cockfight. The gods are invited to descend and join the festivities with music and traditional dances to go with it. This kind of event is extremely exciting, memorable and well worth attending.

art & artist

Beautiful arts

With the arrival of European artists in the beginning of the 20th century, this soon began to change. Local artists started to develop their own individual styles. Photo Courtessy of Bali Plus In Your Hand

PAINTING

Until the start of the 20th century, the dominant form of painting was the portrayal of Hindu epics by painters and illustrators called ‘Sangging’. Aside from making large representational paintings, the ‘Sangging’ were expected to decorate everything from gourds, wooden altars, bamboo vessels, headboards for princely bed chambers and, in particular, they were expected to illustrate astrological wall hangings on bark paper or cloth. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that western influences reached Bali. The use of Asian symbols in the works of, among others, Paul Gauguin, Toulouse Lautrec and Camille Pissaro, created a new trend for Asian-influenced art and for European painters to move to Bali. Ubud’s fame regarding art can be traced to the arrival of the German painter Walter Spies and the Dutch Rudolf Bonnet. There is a much wider range of artistic styles today. Ubud Style

Influenced by the western use of perspective and everyday-life subject matter, the Ubud style is one of the most ‘expressionistic’ of all Bali’s schools. Despite this, Ubud’s art still retains many traditional features, including attention to detail and stylized characters. Batuan Style

Strongly wayang based (puppet). This style involves hundreds of intricately painted representations of Balinese life, filling every available nook and cranny of the canvas. Keliki Style

Keliki paintings measure 20cm by 15cm. They contain scenes of mythical and Ramayanic characters engaged in battle, good versus evil, on sinister backgrounds.

Pengosekan Style

From this village, on the outskirts of Ubud, a new style sprang up during the 1960s. It concentrated on just a few natural components, such as birds, insects, butterflies and plants. STONE CARVING

Stone carvings were mainly used to decorate temples and palaces. There is little difference between the iconography decorating temples and that of private buildings. Gateways represent the dividing line between the inner and outer worlds and as such are the recipients of some of the most fantastic carvings. Bali’s modern-day centre of stone carving is the village of Batubulan, situated halfway between the towns of Denpasar and Ubud. TEXTILES

One of the most striking things about Bali is the rich variety of cloths and materials that are to be seen in thousands of shops throughout the island. However, only a small proportion of these are indigenous to Bali. The myriad of batik clothes and sarongs available everywhere, are mainly imported from Java. Bali does have a very rich textile industry of its own. The beautiful Songket fabrics, worn by performers of traditional dances, are a good example. In Songket gold and silver threads are woven into the cloth to create complex motifs of birds, butterflies and flowers. Endek, or weft ikat, is another common method used in Bali. In weft ikat weaving, the weft threads are dyed to create the design and are then woven with plain warp threads.

Photo Courtessy of David Lynne Gallery

The least common form of weaving to be seen in Bali is the Geringsing, or double-ikat, and it is perhaps the most sought after. In Geringsing both the warp and weft threads are dyed to their final designs before being woven together. With the exception of certain areas in India and Japan, this weaving technique can only be found in the small Bali Aga village of Tenganan, East Bali. WOOD CARVINGS

Wood and stone carvings have traditionally been featured largely in temple and palace architecture. Immaculately carved demons and mythical beings decorate pillars, door panels, lintels and window shutters with the object of protecting the buildings from evil intruders. Scenes of legendary figures placed within a floral décor, set a more pleasant and educational tone. With the arrival of European influences, wood carving started to develop a long more innovative and commercial lines. Today, whole villages specialise in producing certain styles of work. The village of Mas, near Ubud, is the best known for its carvings of female figures, Buddhas, characters from Hindu epics, the traditional topeng (mask) and Wayang Wong masks. DANCE & DRAMA

Dance and drama have played a historically important role in Balinese society. Through this medium, people learned about the tales of the Ramayana, Mahabarata and of other epic stories from Balinese history. The following are brief descriptions of some of the more well-known dance-dramas that can be seen at regular performances throughout Bali. Baris - This is a warrior’s dance. It is usually performed by men, either solo

or in a group of five or more.

Barong & Rangda - This is a story about the struggle between good and evil.

Good is personified by the Barong Keket, a strange but fun-loving creature in the shape of a shaggy semi-lion. Evil is represented by Rangda, a witch.

Kecak - The most famous of the Balinese dances, originated from the Sanghyang dance choirs, holds its uniqueness in the entrancing ‘Kecak, kecak’ chant. The Kecak as a dance developed in the 1930s, in the village of Bona, where it is still performed regularly. Legong - This dance tells a story of princess Rangkesari being held captive

by King Lakesmi. Rangkesari’s brother, prince Daha, gathers an army to rescue his sister. The Legong is a very classical and graceful dance, always performed by prepubescent girls, who can be as young as eight or nine years old.

Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet) - Wayang Kulit is one of the great story-telling traditions of the Javanese and Balinese people. The wayang show usually consists of a small four-piece orchestra, which provides the musical accompaniment, around sixty ‘puppets’, carved out of flat pieces of water buffalo hide, and the dalang or puppet-master. The good characters speak in ancient ‘Kawi’, whereas the evil or coarse ones speak Balinese. The Bali Agung Show

The Bali Agung Show at the Bali Safari and Marine Park is an inspiring cultural performance dedicated to the entertainment of both local and international audiences. This spectacular show celebrated its 1500th performance on Jan 19, 2016. With regular scheduled performances over the past five years, the colossal and spectacular Bali Agung Show is arguably the longestrunning theatrical production in Indonesia’s theatrical history. Jalan Prof. Ida Bagus Mantra Km 19.8, Gianyar Bali | Ph: +62 361 950000 | marketing@ balisafarimarinepark.com Devdan Show

Devdan’s “Treasure of the Archipelago” at the Bali Nusa Dua Theatre is a 90-minute show that takes you on a tour of the Indonesian archipelago with impressive acrobatics, effects and traditional dances. Performed 4 times a week every week.www.devdanshow.com. Calonarang

The Calonarang dance tells the tale of a widow queen, Walunateng Dirah from Girah village who possessed the ability to conduct powerful black magic. Her powers were said to be stronger than the King Erlangga’s, causing fear among all that nobody would dare to ask for her daughter’s hand in marriage. The widow, furious, placed a curse on the entire land and people began to die without reason, which caused a state-wide war. The King then sought the help of a Priest, Mpu Bharadah, who defeated Calonarang with his white magic. Ramayana

The Ramayana dance tells the epic love story of Rama and Sita whose love was too strong to be torn apart. Expect exciting scenes of treachery among the royal family, lost-in-the-jungle scenes, kidnappings, brave rescue missions by Hanoman the Monkey King, and a romantic ending where Rama is forever reunited with his love, Sita.

There are many diving sites in Bali that attract divers from around the globe. Some of the diving sites, like USAT Liberty Shipwreck and Amed diving sites are suitable for beginner divers. If you’ve not yet tried these sports, we recommend that you start at Sanur or Tanjung Benoa Beach where you can hire the necessary equipment, either right on the beachfront (at a beach club) or at one of the hotel-run dive centres. Instructions are available at these diving centres. Most of the centres offer International (PADI) diving certificates but be sure to check their PADI Resort Code as well, for the insurance and medical facilities. It is advisable to look for diving centres that have a ‘five-star’ PADI Approval Rating. Please note that Bali’s only decompression chamber is at Sanglah Public Hospital in Denpasar (see ‘Hospitals’ in the ‘Essential Info’ section for more info). BALIPLUS July 2016 |

Bali is blessed by nature with a short, hot wet season and a longer, cooler, dry season and tourists flock here all year round. how to get around

Photo Courtessy Of Rustian Aditya Nugraha

Easy Riding car HIRE Car rental agencies can be found in all the major tourist areas. Prices start from approximately USD 30 a day for a Suzuki-style jeep (Jimny) and about USD45 for a new Kijang jeep. Organize and arrange your car rental needs for a holiday or business stay. Most rental cars in Bali are in decent shape, BUT you should check them thoroughly before signing any forms. Always carry an international driver’s license with you. Motorbike rental You can find bikes for rent almost everywhere. Prices usually start from around USD6/day for a standard 125cc motorbike. Scooters, affectionately called ‘Bebeks’ (Ducks), start at around USD5/day. Always check the bike before parting with your cash. In Indonesia you have to wear a helmet by law and carry an international drivers license! Bicycle/Mountain Bike Cycling can be a cheap and enjoyable way to get around and about. It does, however, take some fitness to ride around the more central and hilly regions! The northern coastal roads are ideal for longer trips. You can find bike rental shops in all the main tourist areas. Bemo Public transport in the form of mini-vans is by far the cheapest way to travel, although not the most comfortable! Tours Organised tours relieve you from the hassle of trying to navigate your own way around. You do have to follow itineraries however, so spur of the moment sight-seeing is not an option on these. WHAT THE TRUCK! For Tasty Eats On Wheels

One of the coolest trends to take Bali by storm has got to be the food truck craze and in our humble opinion, no one does it better than Courtyard by Marriott Bali Seminyak Resort. This elegant and refreshing hotel located in the heart of Seminyak, Bali is also host to one of our most favourite eateries yet; the Seminyak Kitchen, so upon hearing of their plans to introduce “What The Truck!”, enthusiasm bubbled over and after a fabulous launch event, the trendy mobile eatery now sits directly across from the Courtyard’s hotel lobby, giving guests and pedestrians a taste of delicious Mexican classics with a local Indonesian twist. The fun and funky, fully modified VW Combi Van offers convenient take away drinks and bites; choose from local fusion tacos and wraps filled with selections of Babi Guling, Beef Rendang and Chicken Pelalah. Various beverages are also available with signature brews including the all-time favourite Bintang, Apple Cider and Starks and the island’s Bootstrap Cold Brew coffee for morning selections and ice crushed mojitos for evening sips. A new addition on the menu is the increasingly popular burrito; a popular Mexican or Tex-Mex choice wrapped in flour tortilla featuring a combination of tasty ingredients like eggs, beef or chicken, vegetables and an assortment of sauces. The process of creating the food truck involved collaboration with Institut Seni Indonesia Denpasar. All students from the Faculty of Arts & Design can submit their creative designs for the exterior of the truck 90

| BALIPLUS July 2016

in order to stand a chance to have their art displayed permanently on the VW Combi and bring home a total cash prize of a cool IDR 40 million. A total of 150 entries were submitted but fourth-semester Visual Communications Design student, I Putu Yudhi Aditya, was announced the winner his super-cool, original design depicts the lively and colorful atmosphere of Seminyak, using a combination of authentic Balinese elements, the different morning and afternoon vibe that the truck offers, along with eye catching cartoon illustration with an iconic chef as the mascot. His design was chosen based on originality, creativity, relevance to the local market, and presentation skills. So next time you’re in Seminyak, head over to Courtyard by Marriott Bali Seminyak for some cool sips and fresh eats. “What The Truck!” is now located on the pedestrian walk in front of the hotel lobby and opens its doors to the public daily from 8AM to 8PM, starting from 25 April 2016 onwards. The truck offers an opening promo of a complimentary beer for every first purchase of tacos, whenever following its Instagram account @ whatthetruckbali. Besides, who doesn’t love a modified and creatively illustrated VW Combi?

KORI’s Classics:

FEASTS OF PARADISE For food lovers who truly understand and appreciate traditional Indonesian cuisine, this time we’d like to introduce you to an astonishing Lamb Curry by one of Bali’s favourite classics; KORI Restaurant, Bar & Catering. So special is this dish that it’s not even featured in the restaurant’s ala-carte menu, the dish has to be pre-ordered or served on special occassions like the recent Idhul Fitri or by guests’ requests for outside catering. A mildly spicy dish, the Lamb Curry features Bali’s coconutfed lamb cooked in a mild curry and spices with root vegetable and served with Ketupat/Tipat (Indonesian rice cake). Expect tender, moist and mouthwatering servings! Perfect when paired with the KORI Punch, a non-alcoholic beverage featuring a mix of orange, pineapple, lemon juice and grenadine syrup topped with Sprite; a very refreshing beverage to enjoy with a heavy dish. Give your meal a sweet ending and indulge in the restaurant’s best seller Mango & Markisa Bavarian cheesecake, a decidely tropical and Indonesian dessert featuring warm fudge sauce with just the right amount of sweet, salty and sour to cleanse and satisfy your palate. For those who haven’t tried the restaurant’s other all-time favourite dessert, then the famous Sticky Toffee Date Pudding should hit the spot. Or why not have both? With over 18 years experience in serving up continuously delicious, authentic delicacies, KORI Restaurant, Bar & Catering can whip up any dish to suit any requests and satisfy any cravings.

Ryoshi is definitely the ultimate go-to for lovers of Japanese food in Bali. Despite numerous other restaurants scattering the island offering authentic Japanese fare, Ryoshi remains unique, thanks to its philosophy of good food at great prices. Also, those who have frequented one of the brand’s many outlets would already be familiar with the restaurant’s distinctive menu offering seasonal tasty twists that come with every dish. With the outlet in Seminyak being one of the biggest, it is also the only locale that offers Jazz nights every Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Other Ryoshi outlets are located in some of the island’s most popular spots including Mall Bali Galleria, the Bali Garden Hotel in Kuta, the idyllic beach resort area of Sanur, and the capital of everything artistic and cultural, Ubud. In keeping up with growing demands for delicious Japanese cuisine and in line with its plans to keep expanding, Ryoshi also has a new outlet at Park 23, a brand spanking new shopping mall located in the heart of Kuta. Not only does this make it convenient for fans to get to the nearest Ryoshi, you’ll also be delighted to know that each different Ryoshi branch comes with its own special menus and promotional packages. This month, the outlet at Park 23 is offering the Sashimi Combo, a mouthwatering raw platter made with only the freshest produce, free of any artificial colourings or preservatives. All meats and products served to customers of Ryoshi are locally 98

| BALIPLUS July 2016

produced with the exception of the Salmon, due to it being a cold-water fish species. Diners would also be at ease knowing that tofu products here are GMOfree, and all vegetables are also chemical-free and organic. The brand will also soon introduce free-range beef and pork at all its outlets in the near future. In Ubud, the restaurant is styled in the characteristic Japanese pavilion fashion, with an open concept and seating areas in the main room. You can also dine at one of the private outdoor bales overlooking a small pond in the restaurant’s garden. This outlet is special because only here can you try the famous Ryoshi Teppan Menu and the Yakiniku, an increasingly popular Korean BBQ style of dining that is perfect for two persons containing a variety of meats, vegetables, miso soup, rice and pickles. The Teppan menu offers grilled beef, seafood and vegetables, cooked on an iron griddle as well as Yaki Udon, Yaki Soba and Japanese Savoury Pancakes. The word teppanyaki is derived from teppan, which means iron plate, and yaki, which means grilled, broiled, or pan-fried. After decades of continuously serving up delectable and enticing choices while strongly supporting the local farming and fishing community, Ryoshi will be celebrating its 23rd birthday this August. Diners will be able to see a gradual healthier focus in the brand’s menus while enjoying the same beloved and delicious favourites that keep everyone coming back for more.

Traditional Indonesian food is not only about the coming together of flavours and spices; almost all dishes carry with them great significance and meaning. One of the most vibrant and colourful cuisines in the world, the beauty behind its preparation and tradition continues to lend a regal touch to any meal. With this in mind, Kayumanis Private Estate & Spa in Jimbaran is proud to announce the launching of Kayumanis Resto, a brand new Indonesian restaurant dedicated to Indonesian cuisine with offerings that will reflect the country’s diverse cultures and traditions. Preparations are still underway for its soft opening in August this year. Inspired by classic Javanese architecture, Kayumanis Resto has been designed to capture the rustic elegance of a traditional wooden home. The restaurant promises to present Indonesian cuisine at its finest with a special focus on market-fresh ingredients and seasonal delicacies. There will be lots of healthy options along with fresh juices and refreshing drinks. Headed by Executive Chef Oka who’s been with Kayumanis Jimbaran since its opening in 2006, this Klungkung-born food aficionado discovered his passion while watching his Balinese grandmother cooking in her kitchen. Now Chef Oka spends almost every waking moment in the kitchen at Kayumanis Jimbaran, serving up amazing meals and fine-tuning recipes. A member of the local Chef’s 104

association of Bali (ICHAL), Chef Oka will be the man responsible in satistafying craving taste buds once the restaurant is opened. Guests can look forward to flavorsome dishes that play significant roles in Bali’s colourful Hindu heritage; the Bebek Panggang Mekudus or traditional grilled smoky duck is culturallyinspired and comes with minced chicken on lemongrass skewers, clear broth with chicken balls and cucumber, mixed vegetables and sambal condiments. Did you know that duck is the only type of meat that high-caste priests on the island are permitted to eat? It is invariably served after a ceremony has been performed. As the duck is able to exist on both land and water, it has great spiritual significance aside to being a local delicacy. Other anticipated dishes are Nasi Bakar; grilled fragrant rice with selections of toppings, Kare Ayam; braised chicken in chili turmeric coconut sauce, Mangut Ikan; grilled braised fish with chilli sauce and the all-time favourite Rendang with its signature sauce. Try also the signature beverages to complement your meal; Melodi Kemangi is a homemade healthy combination of kemangi leaf with lychee juice or the Coconut Mojito, a combination of rum, mint leaf, lime chunks, fresh coconut and soda water.

Berawa’s New Favourite

Happy Chappy Chinese

Everyone’s favourite Chinese, Happy Chappy has opened its doors at a brand spanking new location in Berawa and the entire town of Canggu is rejoicing. And no wonder because who doesn’t love those succulent and tasty dishes that can only be found at Bali’s number one Chinese go-to? Founder and restaurateur, David Kearns recently told us at an interview that the Happy Chappy Express in Berawa is merely the first in the long lines of Happy Chappy Expresses that are currently in the pipeline, featuring the same concept, layout and menu as the new Express outlet in Berawa. Berawa’s Happy Chappy Express is dedicated to takeaways and casual dining. But regardless, both locations are consistently living up to its tagline; “Real Good Chinese Food” and diners should expect no less. The outlet seats about 30 persons max, and features the same décor and ambience as the first Happy Chappy in Seminyak but unlike its sister location that promises an entire dining experience as a package, the Express in Canggu focuses on its fabulous menu offerings and in-and-out dining concept with the same great taste and amazing quality. “All your favourite dishes, you can find at Happy Chappy Express,” David said. Takeaways are great for cosy nights in, or to fill your ravenous bellies with a bottle of Bintang after a day of surfing and sunbathing. Friends can also walk in to grab some authentic and mouthwatering Chinese delicacies to warm the heart and soul. The Express delivers to locations around Canggu, and diners can always pick their favourites from the restaurant’s takeaway menu available online. Some of the favourites, we were told, are the Kungpao and Sweet & Sour dishes with chicken, pork or prawns. Meanwhile the Happy Chappy Chinese in Seminyak continues to pleasure and satisfy. Night after night, the restaurant is packed to the brim, a testimony to its amazing reputation as one of the best restaurants to ever graze Bali’s culinary scene. Those who’ve been to Happy Chappy in Seminyak don’t only go for the food; the Dragon Den’s bar provides an ethereal effect; like entering an underground bar in a Chinese Kung Fu movie. The cocktails are out of this world, and we strongly recommend trying “Dragon’s Den” - Vodka infused with tea, lemongrass, ginger liqueur, lime juice, simple syrup and lemon twist. There are more themed events to attend, with Kung Fu Lunches happening every Friday (diners get to watch their favourite classic Kung-Fu movies projected on the walls as they dine), Karaoke Evenings on Wednesdays and of course, the notoriously popular Dim Sum Sundays. When asked what’s the next big thing for Happy Chappy? David said, “We are planning another Happy Chappy Express in other locations across Bali. We just want to make good Chinese food more accessible to everybody.” We hear you, David, and while we wait in anticipation, let’s dine, shall we? Happy Chappy awaits! BALIPLUS July 2016 |

General Things

THAT YOU SHOULD OR SHOULDN’T DO...

do

don’t

...change money at a reputable looking location, use your own (or the hotel’s) calculator before changing!

...forget to bring your passport (or a photocopy of your ID) with you at all times-as well as a copy of Bali Plus!

...put on loads of high factor waterproof suncream (especially if you intend to spend a lot of time in the water).

...swim outside designated swimming areas. Currents can be very strong so swim between red and yellow flags.

...drink a lot of bottled water and eat a lot of fresh fruit - do your body a favour.

...do drugs! It could lead to death penalty. Enough foreigners reside in Bali in courtesy of the Govt. prison service!

...try not to step on offerings in the street (walk around them). ...be careful with your belongings at all times. Crime is on the increase and can ruin your holiday. Cases of handbag snatching have been reported so please leave important documents in your hotel safe (carry photocopies) and wear your bag across your shoulders! ...respect the slow pace of processions. If stuck behind one don’t honk your horn! ...haggle when buying (except on price-tagged goods). ...buy ‘lmmodium’ to relieve bouts of Bali belly.

...touch people’s heads - it is very offensive to Hindus. ...enter a temple during menstruation. Sorry ladies! ...forget to add salt to your food and to drink lots of water-you probably sweat more here than at home. ...worry too much about the ice - it’s government quality controlled in established bars and restaurants. ...forget to look and listen while crossing the road. Cars may stop, motorbikes may not! ...forget to reconfirm your flight 72 hours prior to flying.

...have a great holiday! 118

A Word of Advice ATTENDING CEREMONIES:

Remember these are serious occasions and should be treated as such. Religious guidelines: • Always wear a sarong and sash. • Do not walk in front of people that are praying. • Do not use a flash camera or point your camera into the priest’s face! • Never sit higher than the priest or the offerings. • At cremations, do not get in the way of the attendees - however important that photographic opportunity is! • Women are not allowed to enter temples during menstruation. N.B. When attending Special Ceremonies or Anniversary Celebrations as a guest or onloocker, small donations are gratefully received. Your donation will help in paying for the offerings, and upkeep of the temple.

DANGEROUS SPORTS:

Make sure you either have personal insurance or travel insurance that will cover any accident.

DRIVING:

In Bali, always expect the unexpected, always keep your eyes open and your mind on driving. Beware of motorbikes! It is best to rent a car with full insurance as this will save time and money if you are involved in an accident. You must use a helmet at all times and have a valid license.

MONEY CHANGERS:

Be very careful when changing your money. Always check the rate of exchange and commission (if any). Most importantly, always count your money before you leave the premises and, if you can, bring your own calculator as the ones used by some places can be a little ‘inaccurate’.

PETTY CRIME:

There have been a few cases of handbags being snatched after tourists have cashed money at Banks or Money Changers! Put your money away in your ‘burn-bag’ or hold onto your hand bag tightly! When changing large amounts of money please check each note carefully as there are a number of (noticeably) fake notes in circulation. When trying on garments do not take your jewellery off and leave it lying around - give it to a friend or leave it in the hotel safe. When at a spa - use the jewellery box or locker provided for jewellery.

SWIMMING IN THE SEA:

Currents and undertows can be strong. Always swim between the red and yellow flags and don’t swim too far out! Please, do not leave your belongings unattended on the beach.

Thank you for respecting these suggestions.
