from the editor

Bali welcome to

Tourists, Travelers, & Adventure-seekers... It’s a magical month of March here in Bali, because where else can you find colourful monsters with bulging eyes, bared teeth and sharp claws roaming the streets? Yes, they’re made of paper and bamboo, but they are certainly a sight to behold. It’s wonderful to be in Bali at this time of the year, where we can all stand witness to some of the most sacred and holy traditions to still exist in the world today. Many of you would already know about Nyepi, but there are many rituals that are involved before, and after the big Day of Silence that marks the Hindu New Year. For your easy reference, we’ve listed them out for you under our Don’t Miss section. There are also a couple of Festivals taking place in Ubud for yoga, dance and martial arts lovers, so that’s something else to look forward to. With the coming of Nyepi comes great deals and promotions from some of the most leading and sought-after hotels here in Bali. Since it is a day of silence, contemplation and meditation, all shops around the island will be closed for 2 days as a sign of respect. The best thing to do would be to take up one of the Nyepi Packages on offer and enjoy yourselves in comfort and ease. Check out our Hot Deals page for some options and take your pick. For more in depth details of hotels and restaurants, don’t forget to peruse through our Review Pages for an insider’s point of view, featuring some of the island’s most renowned properties and locales in Legian, Seminyak, Gianyar and even Ubud. There are always something new and exciting to be found around here, and we’ve also got that all down for you under our What’s New section. There’s a new cookbook on Balinese recipes that’s getting quite a following, a new coffee shop featuring local roasts and a new product feature by Elemis at the Mandara Spa in Grand Nikko Bali. Sephora is also newly opened, much to the joy of women (and some men) everywhere, and some new and exciting, must-try dining features such as the VW Combi Van that’s been converted to a food truck at the Courtyard by Seminyak Bali. So go ahead and explore, and while you’re at it, do share with us your stories and feedback around Bali on our Facebook page (Baliplus Magazine) or take some photos and tag us on Instagram (Baliplus). Till next time, Om-Swastiastu and welcome to Bali.

Don’t Miss

Melasti Pilgrimage 6 March, 2016 In anticipation of the upcoming Nyepi Day also known as the Day of Silence that marks the start of the Hindu New Year, the Balinese partakes in a procession known as the Melasti Pilgrimage, where hundreds of Balinese carry temple artefacts to the beaches for purification. Taking place three days prior to Nyepi, the Balinese wear colourful clothing, and women carry tall offerings of fruit and rice while some of the men carry a yellow and white cloth that symbolizes the bridge of God. The elaborate ceremonies continue until early evening and are intended as spiritual purification for the whole village.

Ogoh-Ogoh Parade - Eve of Nyepi 8th March 2016

The Eve of Nyepi is intended to purify villages and neighbourhood and turn away evil spirits. Food is cooked for 2 days and at dusk, people start to bang pots and pans and carry torches through their houses before going outside to join others to make fearful sounds and sprinkle rice over streets and alleyways. The Ogoh-Ogoh or demon effigies with bulging eyes made of bamboo, papier-mâché and cloth that symbolize evil are carried through the streets in torch-lit parades to bewilder evil spirits so that they’ll fled and cease harming human beings. On this day, cock fighting is permitted because the spilling of blood is necessary for the purpose of purification. The parade usually starts at around 19:00 local time.

Nyepi Day 2016 (Day of Silence) 9 March, 2016

Commemorating the start of the Hindu New Year, it is a day of complete silence where the Balinese spends the day fasting and resting in contemplation and meditation. It is observed from 6am to 6am the following day and no bright lights are allowed, no working, no entertainment or pleasure, no traveling; and, for some, no talking or eating at all. On this day, Bali’s usually bustling streets and roads are empty, with little or no noise from TVs and radios, and few signs of activities. The only people to be seen outdoors are the Pecalang, traditional security men who patrol the streets to ensure the prohibitions are being followed. This year’s Nyepi also coincides with the total solar eclipse that will be visible in large areas of Indonesia, with Palembang in Southern Sumatra being the largest city among its path of totality.

A hundred-year old ritual that originated from the Banjar Kaja Sesetan Village in Denpasar, it is also known as “The Kissing Ceremony”, and is mainly held for youths of the village to express their joy on the first day of the new year. The procession begins with mass prayer for safety and involves unmarried youths aged 17 to 30 years old. Both groups take position facing each other on the main street of the village then, at the signal of a Hindu leader, both sides approach the center of the road. about bali

Beautiful Island With a reputation as one of the most beautiful and diverse tourist spots in Asia, Bali annually attracts almost 7,000,000 visitors yearly from around the world. Photo Courtessy of Rustian Aditya

Geographically, situated between the islands of Java and Lombok, Bali is small, stretching approximately 140 km from east to west, and 80 km from north to south. The tallest of a string of volcanic mountains that run from the east to the west is Gunung Agung, which last erupted in 1963. Located just 8º south of the Equator, Bali boasts a tropical climate with just two seasons (wet and dry) a year with an average temperature of around 28ºC. The wide and gently sloping southern regions play host to Bali’s famed rice terraces, which are among some of the most spectacular in the world. In the hilly, northern coastal regions, the main produce is coffee, copra, spices, vegetables, cattle and rice. The Balinese have strong spiritual roots and despite the large influx of tourists over the years, their culture is still very much alive. The main religion is Agama Hindu Dharma, which, although originally from India, is comprised of a unique blend of Hindu, Buddhist, Javanese and ancient indigenous beliefs; It is very different from the Hinduism practiced in India today. Naturally creative, the Balinese have traditionally used their talents for religious purposes and most of the beautiful work to be seen here has been inspired by stories from the Ramayana and other Hindu epics.

The majority of Bali’s 4,000,000 people live, for the most part, in tight village communities with large extended families. The largest cities are Denpasar (the capital) and Singaraja in the north. The main tourist area stretches from Kuta to Seminyak. Kuta became a major attraction during the tourist boom of the 70’s because of its famous white-sand beaches, the surf, and stunning sunsets. Today, the stretch from Kuta to Seminyak is a major tourist destination, with hundreds of hotels, bars, restaurants and shops. Those in search of a little peace and quiet tend to head for the more serene resorts of Sanur and Candi Dasa on the east coast, or Lovina in the north. Nusa Dua, on the southern-most peninsula of the island, houses many five-star hotels. The central village of Ubud, in the hilly region of Gianyar, has also blossomed as a tourist attraction and is now considered to be the artistic and cultural centre of Bali.

culture

Beautiful Culture By the Bronze era, around 300 B.C., a fairly evolved culture already existed on Bali. The complex system of irrigation and rice production, still in use today, was established around this time. Photo Courtessy of Doddy Obenk

It appears that the main religion around 500 A.D. was predominantly Buddhist in influence. In 670 A.D., a Chinese scholar (Yi-Tsing), on a trip to India, reported that he had visited a Buddhist country called Bali. It wasn’t until the 11th century that Bali received the first strong influx of Hindu and Javanese cultures. With the death of his father around AD 1011, the Balinese Prince, Airlanggha, moved to East Java and set about uniting it under one principality. Having succeeded, he then appointed his brother, Anak Wungsu, as ruler of Bali. During the ensuing period there was a reciprocation of political and artistic ideas. The old Javanese language, Kawi, became the language used by the aristocracy, one of the many Javanese traits and customs adopted by the people. With the death of Airlanggha, in the middle of the 11th century, Bali enjoyed a period of autonomy. However, this proved to be short-lived, as in 1284 the East Javanese King Kertanegara, conquered Bali and ruled over it from Java. In 1292, Kertanegara was murdered and Bali took the opportunity to liberate itself once again. However, in 1343, Bali was brought back under Javanese control by its defeat at the hands of Gajah Mada, a general in the last of the great Hindu-Javanese empires, the Majapahit. With the spread of Islam throughout Sumatra and Java during the 16th century, the Majapahit empire began to collapse and a large exodus of aristocracy, priests, artists and artisans to Bali ensued. For a while Bali flourished and the following centuries were considered the Golden Age of Bali’s cultural history. The principality of Gelgel, near Klungkung, became a major centre for the arts, and Bali became the major power of the region, taking control of neighbouring Lombok and parts of East Java.

The European Influence

The first Dutch seamen set foot on Bali in 1597, yet it wasn’t until the 1800’s that the Dutch showed an interest in colonising the island. In 1846, having had large areas of Indonesia under their control since the 1700’s, the Dutch government sent troops into northern Bali. In 1894, Dutch forces sided with the Sasak people of Lombok to defeat their Balinese rulers. By 1911, all the Balinese principalities had either been defeated in battle, or had capitulated, leaving the whole island under Dutch control. During World War II, the Dutch were expelled by the Japanese, who had occupied Indonesia from 1942 to 1945. After the Japanese defeat, the Dutch tried to regain control over their former colonies, but on August 17, 1945, Indonesia was declared independent by its first President, Sukarno. After four years of fighting and strong criticism from the international community, the Dutch government finally ceded and, in 1949, Indonesia was recognized as an independent country. The People

Life in Bali is very communal with the organisation of villages, farming and even the creative arts being decided by the community. The local government is responsible for schools, clinics, hospitals and roads, but all other aspects of life are placed in the hands of two traditional committees, whose roots in Balinese culture stretch back centuries. The first, Subak, concerns the production of rice and organises the complex irrigation system. Everyone who owns a sawah, or padi field, must join their local Subak, which ensures that every member gets his fair share of irrigation water. The other community organisation is the Banjar, responsible for arranging all village festivals, marriage ceremonies and cremations. Most villages have at least one Banjar and all men have to join when they marry. Banjars, on average, give membership to 50 up to 100 families and all Banjars have their own meeting place called the Bale Banjar. As well as being used for regular meetings, the Bale (pavilion) is where the local gamelan orchestras and drama groups practice. Religion

Balinese people are Hindu, yet their religion is very different from the Indian variety. The Balinese worship the Hindu trinity Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu, who are seen as manifestations of the Supreme God Sanghyang Widhi. Other Indian gods like Ganesha (the elephant-headed god) also appear, but more commonly. Shrines associated with the many gods and spirits, uniquely Balinese, are found all over the island. Balinese people strongly believe in magic and the power of spirits, basing much of their religion on this. They believe good spirits dwell in the mountains and that the seven seas are home to demons and ogres. Most villages have at least three main temples, namely: (1) the Pura Puseh, or ‘temple of origin’, facing the mountains; (2) the Pura Desa, or village temple normally found in the centre; and (3) the Pura Dalem, aligned with the sea and dedicated to the spirits of the dead. Aside from these ‘village temples’, almost every house has its own shrine. Some temples, for example Pura Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung, are considerably more important and people from all over Bali travel there to worship. Offerings play a significant role in Balinese life as they appease the spirits and thus bring prosperity and good health to the family. Every day small offering trays (canang sari), containing symbolic food, flowers, cigarettes and money, are respectfully put on shrines, in temples, in front of houses and shops, and at dangerous crossroads. Festivals are another great occasion for soothing the gods. The women carry huge, beautifully arranged pyramids of food, fruit and flowers on their heads while the men might conduct a blood sacrifice through a cockfight. The gods are invited to descend and join the festivities with music and traditional dances to go with it. This kind of event is extremely exciting, memorable and well worth attending.

art & artist

Beautiful arts

With the arrival of European artists in the beginning of the 20th century, this soon began to change. Local artists started to develop their own individual styles. Photo Courtessy of Metis Gallery

PAINTING

Until the start of the 20th century, the dominant form of painting was the portrayal of Hindu epics by painters and illustrators called ‘Sangging’. Aside from making large representational paintings, the ‘Sangging’ were expected to decorate everything from gourds, wooden altars, bamboo vessels, headboards for princely bed chambers and, in particular, they were expected to illustrate astrological wall hangings on bark paper or cloth. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that western influences reached Bali. The use of Asian symbols in the works of, among others, Paul Gauguin, Toulouse Lautrec and Camille Pissaro, created a new trend for Asian-influenced art and for European painters to move to Bali. Ubud’s fame regarding art can be traced to the arrival of the German painter Walter Spies and the Dutch Rudolf Bonnet. There is a much wider range of artistic styles today. Ubud Style

Influenced by the western use of perspective and everyday-life subject matter, the Ubud style is one of the most ‘expressionistic’ of all Bali’s schools. Despite this, Ubud’s art still retains many traditional features, including attention to detail and stylized characters. Batuan Style

Strongly wayang based (puppet). This style involves hundreds of intricately painted representations of Balinese life, filling every available nook and cranny of the canvas. Keliki Style

Keliki paintings measure 20cm by 15cm. They contain scenes of mythical and Ramayanic characters engaged in battle, good versus evil, on sinister backgrounds.

Pengosekan Style

From this village, on the outskirts of Ubud, a new style sprang up during the 1960s. It concentrated on just a few natural components, such as birds, insects, butterflies and plants. STONE CARVING

Stone carvings were mainly used to decorate temples and palaces. There is little difference between the iconography decorating temples and that of private buildings. Gateways represent the dividing line between the inner and outer worlds and as such are the recipients of some of the most fantastic carvings. Bali’s modern-day centre of stone carving is the village of Batubulan, situated halfway between the towns of Denpasar and Ubud. TEXTILES

One of the most striking things about Bali is the rich variety of cloths and materials that are to be seen in thousands of shops throughout the island. However, only a small proportion of these are indigenous to Bali. The myriad of batik clothes and sarongs available everywhere, are mainly imported from Java. Bali does have a very rich textile industry of its own. The beautiful Songket fabrics, worn by performers of traditional dances, are a good example. In Songket gold and silver threads are woven into the cloth to create complex motifs of birds, butterflies and flowers. Endek, or weft ikat, is another common method used in Bali. In weft ikat weaving, the weft threads are dyed to create the design and are then woven with plain warp threads.

A Breathtaking

Kecak Masterpiece The iconic Balinese Kecak Dance mesmerizes with its haunting tunes and hypnotizing movements. It tells the epic tale of the Ramayana and its contemporary roots can be traced to the village of Bone in Gianyar where, in the 1930s, dance-master Wayan Limbak and German artist and musician, Walter Spies, reworked the ancient sanghyang dance of trance and exorcism. At Bali Safari & Marine Park, it was recently given a new and exciting twist by I Made Sidia - one of Indonesia’s leading choreographers and dramatists who breathed new life into this age-old favorite from the Balinese dance repertoire. Hailing from an established convention, Sidia managed to preserve the essence of the original Kecak Dance while interweaving elements of the Tek Tok Dance – another dance heavily reliant on the syncopated rhythms of the human voice – thereafter ushering in the heavily traditional performance into the modern age and right onto the state-of-the-art performance venue of the Bali Theatre. Aptly named “Kecak Masterpiece”, the performance is supported by a combination of sophisticated lighting, compelling music and sound effects, all which are guaranteed to viscerally move the audience. Making its debut only in February this year, the “Kecak Masterpiece” is a one-hour spectacular performance presented by 115 dancers on Indonesia’s largest indoor stage. The end result of that artistic collaboration is the mesmerizing dance form that continues to be the cultural highlight of many visitors’ trip to Bali.

The least common form of weaving to be seen in Bali is the Geringsing, or double-ikat, and it is perhaps the most sought after. In Geringsing both the warp and weft threads are dyed to their final designs before being woven together. With the exception of certain areas in India and Japan, this weaving technique can only be found in the small Bali Aga village of Tenganan, East Bali. WOOD CARVINGS

Wood and stone carvings have traditionally been featured largely in temple and palace architecture. Immaculately carved demons and mythical beings decorate pillars, door panels, lintels and window shutters with the object of protecting the buildings from evil intruders. Scenes of legendary figures placed within a floral décor, set a more pleasant and educational tone. With the arrival of European influences, wood carving started to develop a long more innovative and commercial lines. Today, whole villages specialise in producing certain styles of work. The village of Mas, near Ubud, is the best known for its carvings of female figures, Buddhas, characters from Hindu epics, the traditional topeng (mask) and Wayang Wong masks. DANCE & DRAMA

Dance and drama have played a historically important role in Balinese society. Through this medium, people learned about the tales of the Ramayana, Mahabarata and of other epic stories from Balinese history. The following are brief descriptions of some of the more well-known dance-dramas that can be seen at regular performances throughout Bali. Baris - This is a warrior’s dance. It is usually performed by men, either solo

or in a group of five or more.

Barong & Rangda - This is a story about the struggle between good and evil.

Good is personified by the Barong Keket, a strange but fun-loving creature in the shape of a shaggy semi-lion. Evil is represented by Rangda, a witch.

Kecak - The most famous of the Balinese dances, originated from the Sanghyang dance choirs, holds its uniqueness in the entrancing ‘Kecak, kecak’ chant. The Kecak as a dance developed in the 1930s, in the village of Bona, where it is still performed regularly. Legong - This dance tells a story of princess Rangkesari being held captive

by King Lakesmi. Rangkesari’s brother, prince Daha, gathers an army to rescue his sister. The Legong is a very classical and graceful dance, always performed by prepubescent girls, who can be as young as eight or nine years old.

Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet) - Wayang Kulit is one of the great story-telling traditions of the Javanese and Balinese people. The wayang show usually consists of a small four-piece orchestra, which provides the musical accompaniment, around sixty ‘puppets’, carved out of flat pieces of water buffalo hide, and the dalang or puppet-master. The good characters speak in ancient ‘Kawi’, whereas the evil or coarse ones speak Balinese. Devdan Show

If you want to see the richness and diversity of cultural expressions of Bali and Indonesia as well, grab a ticket for a spectacular stage performance Devdan “Treasure of the Archipelago” at Bali Nusa Dua Theathre. The 90-minute show will take you into a tour of the Indonesian archipelago, from Bali to Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Papua with an extensive array of special effects, acrobatics and traditional dances. Performed 4 times a week. Ph. +62 361 770 197 ext. 119 www.devdanshow.com

Diving & Snorkeling Everyone should know that Bali has a wonderful underwater world with abundant marine life and beautiful coral garden awaiting to be explored. There are many diving sites in Bali that attract divers from around the globe. Some of the diving sites, like USAT Liberty Shipwreck and Amed diving sites are suitable for beginner divers. If you’ve not yet tried these sports, we recommend that you start at Sanur or Tanjung Benoa Beach where you can hire the necessary equipment, either right on the beachfront (at a beach club) or at one of the hotel-run dive centres. Instructions are available at these diving centres. Most of the centres offer International (PADI) diving certificates but be sure to check their PADI Resort Code as well, for the insurance and medical facilities. It is advisable to look for diving centres that have a ‘five-star’ PADI Approval Rating. Please note that Bali’s only decompression chamber is at Sanglah Public Hospital in Denpasar (see ‘Hospitals’ in the ‘Essential Info’ section for more info). BALIPLUS March 2016 |

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan - *J4 - near Bedugul. This temple has several shrines which are located on both the lake’s shore and on various small islets. The following three temples are between Seribatu and Tampaksiring, north of Ubud. Pura Gunung Kawi Set in a ravine in Tampaksiring, the temples Candi’s are carved into the rock face. how to get around

Photo Courtessy Of Rustian Aditya Nugraha

Easy Riding car HIRE Car rental agencies can be found in all the major tourist areas. Prices start from approximately USD 30 a day for a Suzuki-style jeep (Jimny) and about USD45 for a new Kijang jeep. Organize and arrange your car rental needs for a holiday or business stay. Most rental cars in Bali are in decent shape, BUT you should check them thoroughly before signing any forms. Always carry an international driver’s license with you. Motorbike rental You can find bikes for rent almost everywhere. Prices usually start from around USD6/day for a standard 125cc motorbike. Scooters, affectionately called ‘Bebeks’ (Ducks), start at around USD5/day. Always check the bike before parting with your cash. In Indonesia you have to wear a helmet by law and carry an international drivers license! Bicycle/Mountain Bike Cycling can be a cheap and enjoyable way to get around and about. It does, however, take some fitness to ride around the more central and hilly regions! The northern coastal roads are ideal for longer trips. You can find bike rental shops in all the main tourist areas. Bemo Public transport in the form of mini-vans is by far the cheapest way to travel, although not the most comfortable! Tours Organised tours relieve you from the hassle of trying to navigate your own way around. You do have to follow itineraries however, so spur of the moment sight-seeing is not an option on these. The main street in Denpasar is the Teuku Umar Street. Take a stroll and enjoy the city’s main business district where you’ll find a wide selection of Restaurants for both the tame and the adventurous - Warung Babi Guling Chandra is famous for its suckling pig, Bakwan Surabaya for its meatballs in flavoursome spiced soup and Mie Gang Jangkrik for all kinds of noodles, soup or fried as well as Chinese-style dishes. These are only some of the most popular haunts among locals and tourists alike. Continue your exploration and you’ll discover more places to satisfy the most bold and daring palate. After a hearty meal, continue down Teuku Umar where you will soon come upon one of the many stores selling the latest electronics and technological gadgets known to mankind. Don’t be surprised that this humble street is also a haven for tech enthusiasts, with rows upon rows of stores offering the latest tech offerings. Here is where you’ll most likely find the newest smartphones that aren’t available yet anywhere else in the world at competitive rates! So be sure to experience an exciting day of comparing prices here before taking home a new gadget or two. Not only a place to satisfy food lovers and tech enthusiasts, Denpasar is also the seat for the government of Bali and home to the provincial governor’s office as well as the administration of the Regency of Badung. As the centre

of government and public services, most of their offices can be found in the Renon area, including the provincial governor’s office, consulates, and more public service offices. Also in Renon is a favorite public space for both locals and expatriates; the Bajra Sandhi Monument. Built to commemorate the heroic spirit of Balinese warriors, it is surrounded by a vast green park where people spend their leisure time jogging, doing sports, yoga, or even just to lay back and relax with a friend or a loved one. Another favourite park is the Puputan Park, along the northern edge of which you will find the provincial governor’s office and other government buildings. Also a must visit is the traditional markets in Denpasar - join in the humming voices of people bargaining and selling their wares as you find the perfect Balinese souvenirs at great prices to take home to your family. Palaces In the olden days, Denpasar was the capital of the Kingdom of Badung, where the Royal Families lived and ruled. Many palaces, built in the traditional Balinese structures can be found here that used to house the royal families. The Palaces (or Puri) were government, administration and cultural life centres. Today, the palaces are gathering points for the culturally creative, with cultural performances, ceremonial activities and traditional dance and music practice. Here is also where the primary patrons of art, music, dance and literature gather. Some palaces to visit are Pemecutan Palace, Satria Grand Place, Jero Kuta Palace, and Kesiman Palace. Museums A day exploring culture and heritage will not be complete without a visit to the museums. In Denpasar, there are three main museums that will give you the perfect overview of ancient Bali. In Museum Bali, you’ll find historical artifacts that reflects the ancient Balinese culture, with archeological collections, historical relics, paintings and ethnographic, all of which are housed in three main buildings that were designed to showcase the different Balinese architecture from different districts of Bali including East Bali, Central Bali and North Bali. Take a visit to Museum Sidik Jari at Jl. Hayam Wuruk, and view the personal collection of I Gusti Ngurah Gede Pemecutan, a Balinese painter famous for his art that were applied on canvas using only his fingers. Next museum to visit is Museum Le Mayeur in Sanur. Markets The name Denpasar is originally derived from the Balinese word “den” meaning north, and “pasar” meaning market. Therefore, it is the perfect place to experience the dynamic life of the locals through their daily activities at the local markets. Join them as they begin the day greeting each other, setting up their stalls, haggle their wares and bargain for prices. There are 5 big traditional markets to visit In Denpasar. Badung Market is the most crowded market because it mostly sells daily needs like vegetables, fish, and fruits. Next to Badung Market is Kumbasari Market, which is more focused on handicraft and textile. Other markets are Satria Bird Market, Kreneng Market, and Sanglah Market. Temples What is Bali without its temples? There are over 20,000 temples in Bali and here in Denpasar you’ll find some of the most historic and iconic temples that have played a huge role in Balinese history. Temples hold huge significance to the local people, both religiously and culturally. In Denpasar, you’ll find the Jagatnatha Temple, a beautiful Hindu temple situated in the center of Denpasar City that is the biggest Hindu temple within the capital city.

Experience your very own love story at Awarta Nusa Dua Luxury Villas & Spa. Inspired by the enchanting tale of a Balinese King who fell in love with a Chinese Princess, this romantic legacy is the main idea behind the creation of the beautiful and luxurious Peranakan-inspired property located within the ITDC complex in Nusa Dua. Breathtaking and opulent, the Awarta is a true hidden gem, with an inconspicuous entryway that reveals an extravagant lobby, which leads to a magnificent courtyard. Luxury is an understatement here, as the very air itself seems to sparkle with lavish grandeur. With 14 regal one, two or three bedroom villas, all proudly featuring a combination of rich modern oriental and relaxing warm Balinese architectural style, Awarta is your perfect home away from home. Part of the property’s signature service, you’ll be treated like Kings and Queens throughout your stay and experience pampering like no other. It begins the minute you land in Bali with a first-classdeparture transfer by limousine, a footbath and welcome drinks upon arrival and a flexible and private check-in and checkout service. Stone pathways framed with tropical foliage leads you to your lavish holiday home, through a charming stone-and-wooden gate to a majestic openconcept villa that comes with your own private pool and garden. Each villa is glorious in its conception, featuring teakwood and hardwood finishing in the oriental style and encased in white marble for that feeling of elevated living. While dining in the comforts of your villa is enticing as it is romantic, you can choose to dine at any one of the property’s restaurants; Ru Yi for exceptionally fine and authentic Chinese cuisine featuring signature dishes such as Abalone, Sea Cucumber, Birds Nest Soup and other delicacies from mainland China and Hong Kong. Meaning “Continuous Happiness”, Ru Yi also serves a Discovery Dinner set menu that is to-die-for. Meanwhile, The Long Table Restaurant, aptly named for its traditional single dining table around which diners gather, serves delectable Western and Asian choices that’ll tease and tempt your taste buds and keep you coming back for more. Fancy for some world-class cocktails, wine or spirits? Head over to the 8 Degrees Bar for some relaxing sundown sips in a vintage British drawing room setting, the perfect end to the perfect evening! The Awarta’s awardwinning Thevana Spa is a respite; an exotic and tranquil space created to perfect your journey towards personal wellness. Rejuvenate in one of the 7 treatment rooms, and pick from a wide array of treatments using purely organic homemade ingredients. For those who prefer to sweat it out, enjoy a moment to yourself at the sauna, or just work it out at the 24-hour gym and fitness centre. BALIPLUS March 2016 |

If you’re coming to Bali to uncover a hidden gem, then you’ve come to the right place because that is exactly what you’ll find at Poppies Cottages, in Poppies Lane, Legian Bali. We were pleasantly surprised when walking down the lane in Poppies 1, and upon turning a corner, finding a beautiful lush and peaceful garden hidden behind towering coconut trees and tall walls covered with green vines and leaves. Birds were chirping, cool breeze rustled through the foliage and a feeling of calmness and tranquility permeates the air. Who would have thought we were in the heart of Legian? And in this garden, among bright green grass, lily ponds, Balinese statues and winding stone pathways, sitting in their own cozy nook and partially hidden behind beautiful tropical flora, are twenty individual cottages with white washed walls and thatched roofs welcoming you into your own secret escape. As we entered, friendly staff greeted us for a welcome tour. Here you will learn that the staff and owner are all Balinese and chances are they have been serving at this fine establishment for at least two decades. Poppies Cottages was established in 1980, and nothing much has changed since then. Of course, everything is painstakingly and lovingly maintained. In short, the place is just beautiful. We learned that the name Poppies Lane was actually taken from Poppies Restaurant. Established in 1978, Poppies restaurant is renowned for fresh seafood or tasty Indonesian and international cuisine in a romantic tropical garden setting.Located across the lane from Poppies Cottages 1, the name was given by tourists at that time to reference those looking for the restaurant and later on, the cottages. Each cottage is identical and features a small terrace and a carved wooden Balinese door that leads into a spacious and cozy room. The simple Balinese exterior of each cottage, with its private garden and breakfast terrace, belies the spacious and well thought out rooms that lie within. The interiors are decorated with colourful Indonesian fabrics, and include a host of thoughtfully provided creature comforts as well as local artifacts and discreet design details. Here you’ll find all the amenities that you would need for a comfortable stay including AC and fan, a flat screen TV, comfortable beds, sofas, WIFI in all the rooms, a writing desk and chair. Adjoining every room is a hidden garden area that conceals a charming and spacious bathroom featuring a sunken marble bathtub and shower. Talk a walk through the beautiful garden on the stone walkaway and you’ll find yourself in a secluded corner where the swimming pool and Jacuzzi are located. Set amongst natural rocks and cascades, discreet sunbathing terraces and riotous banks of bougainvillea it is the ideal place to relax and unwind. Steps lead up to a peaceful reading and internet room, where right across sits the intimate pool bar, perfect for a cool escape for drinks or lunch. So if you’re looking for a secret garden, a heavenly tropical retreat and a classic hideaway that is nothing short of perfect, then book yourself into Poppies Cottages 1 for a holiday that you won’t soon forget. Bali is fast gaining reputation as a top prime culinary destination recognised the world over and no wonder, what with signature trademark locales like Métis Restaurant, Lounge and Gallery constantly making its mark and upping the ante with unique culinary offerings in luxurious contemporary settings. Métis is perfect for every occasion; the award-winning restaurant creatively pairs classical fine dining concept with lush tropical beauty in its elegant establishment located in the heart of Seminyak. First opened in 2009 as the brainchild of culinary legend Nicolas ‘Doudou’ Tourneville and art lover, Said Alem, Métis is where you’ll find new and unique combinations of French-Mediterranean dining, art and Asian culture. It has developed a cool reputation for itself as an elegant sanctuary for connoisseurs and art lovers. Walking into Métis, you’ll be mesmerized with its contemporary French décor infused with local influences; the backdrop for a semi alfresco dining that overlooks a stunning Balinese garden and water fountains. And now, expanding on its lounge and garden area, Métis unveils Le Jardin, the ideal place for guests to enjoy its signature haute French Mediterranean cuisine in the setting of fragrant tropical foliage, beneath a canopy of stars. “The new Le Jardin constitutes a deepening of the sensory experience that defines Métis,” comments Managing Director Said Alem. “Our awardwinning chefs Nicolas “Doudou” Tourneville and Desyanto Nugroho delight the senses with their culinary artistry, while our garden exposes the beauty and romance of Bali’s splendid verdure.” Classically trained French Chef and Métis co-founder Doudou, together with Executive Chef and first winner of Top Chef Indonesia 2013, Nugroho, have created homage to French Mediterranean cuisine in the restaurant’s signature menu. Combining the beauty of art and nature, artistry of fine food and drink, and pleasure of jovial company, an evening spent in the Le Jardin is sure to provide immensity in which to dream. The perfect way to indulge, Le Jardin also offers a High Tea Package that begins at IDR 210,000++ for the Alamanda High Tea. Two persons can enjoy a spread of chocolate éclairs, cupcakes, crème brulee, pralines, mini raspberry scones with crème fraiche as well as macaroons, coconut cakes and brownies. The Melati High Tea starts from IDR 325,000++ for two persons and includes an assortment of sandwiches, marinated salmon with lemon and fresh herbs, crispy vegetable spring rolls with sweet Thai chili sauce, mini raspberry scones with crème fraiche as well as macaroons, coconut cakes and brownies. Choose from an array of coffee and tea to complete your afternoon tea experience, which is available daily from 4pm to 7pm. You can also opt for Champagne at an additional price, and before you head home for the evening, why not continue with a stellar dinner at Restaurant’s romantic under-thestars setting, and indulge is some world-class signature cuisines that are second-to-none. Sumptuous Surprises at Shanghai Baby Shanghai Baby entices with its cool, elegant grandeur. Sexy and chic emblazoned in blue, it beckons over a superbly high, magnificent entrance, giving a touch of opulence to the newest addition of Petitenget’s vibrant dining scene. Perfect for a lavish night of sumptuous dining, Shanghai Baby presents a unique convergence of dramatic design, modern Asian cuisine, world class mixology and musical talent across multiple genres. This masterpiece created by international designer Grant Chyene is a grand testament to the decadent 1930’s, when Shanghai was “Paris of the East”. Get ready to experience a whole new level of modern Asian cuisine, featuring delicately prepared gems that will pleasure your palate with innovative surprises. For this, we have Head Chef, Ganesha Pideksha to thank. With over 7 years experience in French culinary, he expands taste and imagination with a fine fusion of East and West in the most unexpected ways. His signature dish, the 3 Flavour Xiao Long Bao holds within its tender skin the most sumptuous surprises – Black Winter Truffle, Foie Gras and Shanghai Spiced Chicken, each bite slowly revealing surprising elements, pleasing the palate. A spritz of beetroot and lime adds a refreshing twist to the Steamed Chilean Sea Bass. And for the grand finale; the Five Elements of Chocolate, a wondrous symphony of chocolate flavoured mousse, tuile, soil, sable, Kluwek ice cream and lemon meringue for a tangy touch. If delicious and crispy Peking Duck or gently steamed, aromatic and fresh Garoupa in Tiao Chew sauce is your thing, then you must head over to Happy Chappy Chinese where one can never get enough of its honest-to-goodness, delectable authentic Chinese delicacies. Located on Jl. Beraban, Happy Chappy Chinese first opened sometime last year and since then, its trademark happy Buddha logo has found a special place in the hearts of many. The restaurant itself is a welcoming haven perfect for lunch or dinner for the whole family. With a cool, cosy interior you’ll love its wooden finishing, giant red lanterns, Chinese ornaments and paintings and the happy Buddha at the foyer that welcomes you with a hearty smile and a warm glow. Also available for takeaway and delivery, the menu at Happy Chappy varies with a myriad of offering to satisfy any appetite. Our favourites include the Beef Chow Fun “Fat Rice Noodles”; a mouth-watering, fragrant fried noodle dish and the flavourful Kung Pao Chicken with Cashew Nuts. The centrepiece to your meal should really be the Whole Steamed Garupa Tiao Chew style or Hong Kong Style, definitely todie-for and will leave you craving for more. If it’s the duck you’re after, try the Traditional BBQ Peking Duck with Crispy Skin, Condiments and Pancakes with your choice of black pepper, Kung Pao or Sang Choy Bao sauces, which are delicately and painstakingly prepared to give you that exceptionally delightful taste and crunch. Lunch time is perfect at Happy Chappy, and the Steamed or Fried Dim Sum Platter hits just the right spot to get you through rush hour. Indulge in Chicken Shu Mai, Dumplings, Peking Duck Bak Pao and Spring Rolls, Prawn Har Gao or the Salt and Pepper Pork Ribs. The expansive menu was designed to satisfy, so choose from beef, pork, chicken, duck, seafood and vegetarian dishes for an unforgettable dining experience. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert; the Nutella-Apple and Caramel Wontons will leave you swooning for more! Kids will be sure to have a smashing good time at this family-friendly locale with the Happy Kiddies Menu that comes with steamed rice, spring rolls and a choice of Sesame Chicken, Honey Prawns or Chow Mein Noodles. On Sundays, the restaurant’s elusive and mysterious Dragon’s Den Bar is turned into a rambunctious, fun and colourful Kids Club with exciting activities like face painting, games and party clowns to liven up the atmosphere. Parents can enjoy Dim Sum Sunday while the kids play. For those who prefer some cocktails when the kids are home, Happy Hour is every day with 30% off beer, cocktails and wine by the glass. Live music is also available every Friday night, the perfect time to relax with a glass or two of “Enter The Dragon” or the “Bing Bing Martini”. BALIPLUS March 2016 |

Kopi Pot Restaurant & Bar Jl. Legan Kuta, Kuta, Bali Phone: +62 361 752614

| BALIPLUS March 2016

Into its 26th year with a staunch following amongst its guests, the highly popular Kopi Pot Restaurant leaves no wonder as to why its customers keep coming back for more. Continuously serving up fresh, home-style cooked fare for a whole generation, the dining establishment has been building a keen following and hardy fan base since it first made its appearance in Kuta in 1990. It is the sister restaurant of the Kuta institution, Poppies, of Poppies Cottage fame, that was the original landmark on a dusty palm tree road that once led to the beautiful Kuta Beach when it first opened 43 long years ago. So be assured – this local family-run hospitality business certainty know a thing or two when it comes to cooking traditional Indonesian cuisine for those visiting the island, as well as crafting the settings of each of their restaurants in a “Balinese” feel, yet comfortable enough to hang out at for several hours. Street side in bustling Jalan Legian – a vibrant street with a lovely mixture of tourists, expatriates, and locals going about their business - Kopi Pot is a perfect spot for enjoying people watching at all hours of the day and night, while also featuring a more subdued garden area for those desiring some peace in the shade. The Lone Palm Bar area at the front is very popular come evening time, serving a long list of cooling cocktails (try the Banana Daiquiri is almost TOO good), as well as an array of long drinks and refreshing thirst quenching local beers (Bintang, anyone?), which always go down well no matter the time of day. Upstairs on the terrace, the peaceful, lush surroundings create a relaxed space for added privacy. Breakfasts are well-served from here, a very good value, and extremely popular with those heading out for a surf or coming back from a long day at the beach. The fresh, icy juices are a real treat on hot days, and their fresh fruit salads and other healthy combinations on the menus are sure to nourish your body as well as please your taste buds. During the daytime and into the evening, the menu remains more less the same, with timeless favorites such as Nasi Goreng and Mie Goreng in meat, seafood, and vegetarian varieties – as well as Tuna in Sumatran Sauce, Cold Roast Beef Salad, Nicoise Salad, and Satay Lilit (fish kebab-style skewers), Chicken Curry Madras. And for dessert: the outrageously decadent homemade cakes and treats such as Black Forest Gateau, Mango Cheesecake, and Lemon Meringue Pie, to name but a few. Open from 8am until Midnight, The Kopi Pot is within walking distance to most places in Kuta. Throw in a good free wifi connection on top of the wonderful fresh fare at excellent value for your money, and you can be certain your visit to Kopi Pot will convert you into one of their raving fans… BALIPLUS March 2016 |

essential info

General Things

THAT YOU SHOULD OR SHOULDN’T DO...

do

don’t

...change money at a reputable looking location, use your own (or the hotel’s) calculator before changing!

...forget to bring your passport (or a photocopy of your ID) with you at all times-as well as a copy of Bali Plus!

...put on loads of high factor waterproof suncream (especially if you intend to spend a lot of time in the water).

...swim outside designated swimming areas. Currents can be very strong so swim between red and yellow flags.

...drink a lot of bottled water and eat a lot of fresh fruit - do your body a favour.

...do drugs! It could lead to death penalty. Enough foreigners reside in Bali in courtesy of the Govt. prison service!

...try not to step on offerings in the street (walk around them). ...be careful with your belongings at all times. Crime is on the increase and can ruin your holiday. Cases of handbag snatching have been reported so please leave important documents in your hotel safe (carry photocopies) and wear your bag across your shoulders! ...respect the slow pace of processions. If stuck behind one don’t honk your horn! ...haggle when buying (except on price-tagged goods). ...buy ‘lmmodium’ to relieve bouts of Bali belly.

...touch people’s heads - it is very offensive to Hindus. ...enter a temple during menstruation. Sorry ladies! ...forget to add salt to your food and to drink lots of water-you probably sweat more here than at home. ...worry too much about the ice - it’s government quality controlled in established bars and restaurants. ...forget to look and listen while crossing the road. Cars may stop, motorbikes may not! ...forget to reconfirm your flight 72 hours prior to flying.

...have a great holiday! 122

A Word of Advice ATTENDING CEREMONIES:

Remember these are serious occasions and should be treated as such. Religious guidelines: • Always wear a sarong and sash. • Do not walk in front of people that are praying. • Do not use a flash camera or point your camera into the priest’s face! • Never sit higher than the priest or the offerings. • At cremations, do not get in the way of the attendees - however important that photographic opportunity is! • Women are not allowed to enter temples during menstruation. N.B. When attending Special Ceremonies or Anniversary Celebrations as a guest or onloocker, small donations are gratefully received. Your donation will help in paying for the offerings, and upkeep of the temple.

DANGEROUS SPORTS:

Make sure you either have personal insurance or travel insurance that will cover any accident.

DRIVING:

In Bali, always expect the unexpected, always keep your eyes open and your mind on driving. Beware of motorbikes! It is best to rent a car with full insurance as this will save time and money if you are involved in an accident. You must use a helmet at all times and have a valid license.

MONEY CHANGERS:

Be very careful when changing your money. Always check the rate of exchange and commission (if any). Most importantly, always count your money before you leave the premises and, if you can, bring your own calculator as the ones used by some places can be a little ‘inaccurate’.

PETTY CRIME:

There have been a few cases of handbags being snatched after tourists have cashed money at Banks or Money Changers! Put your money away in your ‘burn-bag’ or hold onto your hand bag tightly! When changing large amounts of money please check each note carefully as there are a number of (noticeably) fake notes in circulation. When trying on garments do not take your jewellery off and leave it lying around - give it to a friend or leave it in the hotel safe. When at a spa - use the jewellery box or locker provided for jewellery.

SWIMMING IN THE SEA:

Currents and undertows can be strong. Always swim between the red and yellow flags and don’t swim too far out! Please, do not leave your belongings unattended on the beach.

Thank you for respecting these suggestions.
