from the editor

welcome to

Bali

Tourists, Travelers, & Adventure-seekers... In the months of May and June, you’ll begin to notice strange shapes floating amongst Bali’s skies – these are kites, and traditionally here in Bali, kites hold much religious and cultural significance. It is believed that even the Hindu God Indra used to amuse himself flying kites when he isn’t busy handling Godly matters. Another source stated that kites are farmers’ symbols of thanks to the Gods for good weather and great harvest. Yet another said that kites are symbols of village pride and unity and contains colours that represent a Banjar and also Balinese symbolism. Whatever the reason, these kites are beautiful to look at as they add a little bit more delight to the already breathtaking Balinese landscape, especially in the summer months. While the past few months have been quite surprising with unexpected rains, the weather seemed to have steadied itself of late and we look forward to warm, windy days under clear blue skies. Pancasila Day 1 June 2017 This year will be the first for the citizens of Indonesia to celebrate Pancasila Day as an official public holiday as declared by President Joko Widodo in 2016. Although Pancasila Day has been acknowledged since 1945, the President has mandated the day to be a national celebration in remembrance of President Sukarno’s famous speech, “The Birth of Pancasila”, where he outlined five principles by which the new nation ought be governed. It is interesting to know that these five principles are called “pancasila” because, in Indonesian, panca means “five,” while sila means “principle.” June 1st is also Indonesia’s independence from the Netherlands, after Japanese forces surrendered to the Allies at the end of World War II. The 39th Annual Bali Arts Festival 10 June - 8 July 2017 Celebrating its 39th year this year, the annual Bali Arts Festival has returned to wow visitors with one of Bali’s most awaited cultural events. Here’s your chance to witness traditional performances and cultural highlights of Bali and Indonesia at the Taman Werdhi Budaya Arts Centre in Denpasar. Hundreds of artisans from Denpasar and Bali’s eight provinces, neighbouring islands and even international art troupes will be on hand to showcase their talents. Aside to live performances, visitors can also enjoy handicrafts, paintings and sculpture exhibitions as well as a traditional Balinese culinary festival daily. This annual event takes place yearly on the second Saturday of June to the second Saturday of July.

Agni Hotra Fire Ceremony @ The Fivelements 8th June 2017 Agni Hotra is an ancient fire ceremony originating from the sacred Vedic Hindu texts. Centuries past, the tradition of Agni Hotra in Bali was embraced and fused with animistic rituals; however, following a great fire, it fell out of practice nearly 350 years ago. Today, there is a revival of the practice of Agni Hotra for its powerful healing effects not only in Bali but worldwide. Agni refers to fire and Hotra means, healing. This healing fire ceremony is considered one of the highest Vedic rituals. Specially trained priests make offerings of ghee and grains into the fire while reciting Sanskrit mantras to invoke blessings of health and abundance. Participants are also invited to join the priests at specified times with offerings of rice into the fire, as symbol of divine light. The ritual is for energizing and purifying the environment, healing both the participants and those living in the area. Perang Pandan or ‘Mekare-Kare’ 13 June 2017 A mass coming-of-age ritual, Perang Pandan, which is also known as “Mekare-kare” and “Megeret Pandan”, is a unique age-old tradition for the village of Tenganan in Karangasem, East Bali. Dedicated to Lord Indra, the Hindu God of war and sky, friendly duels between bare-breasted male villagers are held on this day, which also coincides with the village’s annual Ngusaba Desa ceremonies. An annual event that adheres to its own local calendar, the males of the village will bout each other armed with small rattan shields and thorny pandan leaves. International Day of Yoga 21 June 2017 Celebrated annually on June 21, Yoga Day was internationally and officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 11, 2014. The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his UN Address suggested the date of June 21, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares special significance in many parts of the world. Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual practice that originated in India with a huge following across the world and in Bali. Tumpek Kandang 24 June 2017 Tumpek Kandang is a special day to honour pets, livestock and household animals. Celebrated every 210 days, various offerings will be made to thank the Gods for a successful year of farming and excellent produce. On this day, prayers are offered as cows are washed and dressed-up in clothes fit for humans. Special cone-shaped coconut leaves are also placed on their horns. Pigs are usually decorated with white cloths around their bellies. The animals are then fed with special foods and sprinkled with rice and holy water. Philosophically, the Tumpek Kandang celebration reminds us that everyone must have compassion for all living creatures. The name Tumpek Kandang is derived from two words, “Tumpek”, which means Saturday and “Kandang”, the Balinese word for household animals such as cows, pigs, chickens, ducks, dogs, and birds. On this day, the Balinese pray to Sang Hyang Rare-Angon, God of all animals.

about bali

Beautiful Island With a reputation as one of the most beautiful and diverse tourist spots in Asia, Bali annually attracts almost 7,000,000 visitors yearly from around the world.

Geographically, situated between the islands of Java and Lombok, Bali is small, stretching approximately 140 km from east to west, and 80 km from north to south. The tallest of a string of volcanic mountains that run from the east to the west is Gunung Agung, which last erupted in 1963. Located just 8º south of the Equator, Bali boasts a tropical climate with just two seasons (wet and dry) a year with an average temperature of around 28ºC. The wide and gently sloping southern regions play host to Bali’s famed rice terraces, which are among some of the most spectacular in the world. In the hilly, northern coastal regions, the main produce is coffee, copra, spices, vegetables, cattle and rice. The Balinese have strong spiritual roots and despite the large influx of tourists over the years, their culture is still very much alive. The main religion is Agama Hindu Dharma, which, although originally from India, is comprised of a unique blend of Hindu, Buddhist, Javanese and ancient indigenous beliefs; It is very different from the Hinduism practiced in India today. Naturally creative, the Balinese have traditionally used their talents for religious purposes and most of the beautiful work to be seen here has been inspired by stories from the Ramayana and other Hindu epics.

The majority of Bali’s 4,000,000 people live, for the most part, in tight village communities with large extended families. The largest cities are Denpasar (the capital) and Singaraja in the north. The main tourist area stretches from Kuta to Seminyak. Kuta became a major attraction during the tourist boom of the 70’s because of its famous white-sand beaches, the surf, and stunning sunsets. Today, the stretch from Kuta to Seminyak is a major tourist destination, with hundreds of hotels, bars, restaurants and shops. Those in search of a little peace and quiet tend to head for the more serene resorts of Sanur and Candi Dasa on the east coast, or Lovina in the north. Nusa Dua, on the southern-most peninsula of the island, houses many five-star hotels. The central village of Ubud, in the hilly region of Gianyar, has also blossomed as a tourist attraction and is now considered to be the artistic and cultural centre of Bali.

culture

Beautiful Culture By the Bronze era, around 300 B.C., a fairly evolved culture already existed on Bali. The complex system of irrigation and rice production, still in use today, was established around this time.

Photo Courtesy of Bali Plus In Your Hand

It appears that the main religion around 500 A.D. was predominantly Buddhist in influence. In 670 A.D., a Chinese scholar (Yi-Tsing), on a trip to India, reported that he had visited a Buddhist country called Bali. It wasn’t until the 11th century that Bali received the first strong influx of Hindu and Javanese cultures. With the death of his father around AD 1011, the Balinese Prince, Airlanggha, moved to East Java and set about uniting it under one principality. Having succeeded, he then appointed his brother, Anak Wungsu, as ruler of Bali. During the ensuing period there was a reciprocation of political and artistic ideas. The old Javanese language, Kawi, became the language used by the aristocracy, one of the many Javanese traits and customs adopted by the people. With the death of Airlanggha, in the middle of the 11th century, Bali enjoyed a period of autonomy. However, this proved to be short-lived, as in 1284 the East Javanese King Kertanegara, conquered Bali and ruled over it from Java. In 1292, Kertanegara was murdered and Bali took the opportunity to liberate itself once again. However, in 1343, Bali was brought back under Javanese control by its defeat at the hands of Gajah Mada, a general in the last of the great Hindu-Javanese empires, the Majapahit. With the spread of Islam throughout Sumatra and Java during the 16th century, the Majapahit empire began to collapse and a large exodus of aristocracy, priests, artists and artisans to Bali ensued. For a while Bali flourished and the following centuries were considered the Golden Age of Bali’s cultural history. The principality of Gelgel, near Klungkung, became a major centre for the arts, and Bali became the major power of the region, taking control of neighbouring Lombok and parts of East Java.

The European Influence

The first Dutch seamen set foot on Bali in 1597, yet it wasn’t until the 1800’s that the Dutch showed an interest in colonising the island. In 1846, having had large areas of Indonesia under their control since the 1700’s, the Dutch government sent troops into northern Bali. In 1894, Dutch forces sided with the Sasak people of Lombok to defeat their Balinese rulers. By 1911, all the Balinese principalities had either been defeated in battle, or had capitulated, leaving the whole island under Dutch control. During World War II, the Dutch were expelled by the Japanese, who had occupied Indonesia from 1942 to 1945. After the Japanese defeat, the Dutch tried to regain control over their former colonies, but on August 17, 1945, Indonesia was declared independent by its first President, Sukarno. After four years of fighting and strong criticism from the international community, the Dutch government finally ceded and, in 1949, Indonesia was recognized as an independent country. The People

Life in Bali is very communal with the organisation of villages, farming and even the creative arts being decided by the community. The local government is responsible for schools, clinics, hospitals and roads, but all other aspects of life are placed in the hands of two traditional committees, whose roots in Balinese culture stretch back centuries. The first, Subak, concerns the production of rice and organises the complex irrigation system. Everyone who owns a sawah, or padi field, must join their local Subak, which ensures that every member gets his fair share of irrigation water. The other community organisation is the Banjar, responsible for arranging all village festivals, marriage ceremonies and cremations. Most villages have at least one Banjar and all men have to join when they marry. Banjars, on average, give membership to 50 up to 100 families and all Banjars have their own meeting place called the Bale Banjar. As well as being used for regular meetings, the Bale (pavilion) is where the local gamelan orchestras and drama groups practice. Religion

Balinese people are Hindu, yet their religion is very different from the Indian variety. The Balinese worship the Hindu trinity Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu, who are seen as manifestations of the Supreme God Sanghyang Widhi. Other Indian gods like Ganesha (the elephant-headed god) also appear, but more commonly. Shrines associated with the many gods and spirits, uniquely Balinese, are found all over the island. Balinese people strongly believe in magic and the power of spirits, basing much of their religion on this. They believe good spirits dwell in the mountains and that the seven seas are home to demons and ogres. Most villages have at least three main temples, namely: (1) the Pura Puseh, or ‘temple of origin’, facing the mountains; (2) the Pura Desa, or village temple normally found in the centre; and (3) the Pura Dalem, aligned with the sea and dedicated to the spirits of the dead. Aside from these ‘village temples’, almost every house has its own shrine. Some temples, for example Pura Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung, are considerably more important and people from all over Bali travel there to worship. Offerings play a significant role in Balinese life as they appease the spirits and thus bring prosperity and good health to the family. Every day small offering trays (canang sari), containing symbolic food, flowers, cigarettes and money, are respectfully put on shrines, in temples, in front of houses and shops, and at dangerous crossroads. Festivals are another great occasion for soothing the gods. The women carry huge, beautifully arranged pyramids of food, fruit and flowers on their heads while the men might conduct a blood sacrifice through a cockfight. The gods are invited to descend and join the festivities with music and traditional dances to go with it. This kind of event is extremely exciting, memorable and well worth attending.

art & artist

Beautiful arts

With the arrival of European artists in the beginning of the 20th century, this soon began to change. Local artists started to develop their own individual styles. PAINTING

Until the start of the 20th century, the dominant form of painting was the portrayal of Hindu epics by painters and illustrators called ‘Sangging’. Aside from making large representational paintings, the ‘Sangging’ were expected to decorate everything from gourds, wooden altars, bamboo vessels, headboards for princely bed chambers and, in particular, they were expected to illustrate astrological wall hangings on bark paper or cloth. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that western influences reached Bali. The use of Asian symbols in the works of, among others, Paul Gauguin, Toulouse Lautrec and Camille Pissaro, created a new trend for Asian-influenced art and for European painters to move to Bali. Ubud’s fame regarding art can be traced to the arrival of the German painter Walter Spies and the Dutch Rudolf Bonnet. There is a much wider range of artistic styles today. Ubud Style

Influenced by the western use of perspective and everyday-life subject matter, the Ubud style is one of the most ‘expressionistic’ of all Bali’s schools. Despite this, Ubud’s art still retains many traditional features, including attention to detail and stylized characters. Batuan Style

Strongly wayang based (puppet). This style involves hundreds of intricately painted representations of Balinese life, filling every available nook and cranny of the canvas. Keliki Style

Keliki paintings measure 20cm by 15cm. They contain scenes of mythical and Ramayanic characters engaged in battle, good versus evil, on sinister backgrounds.

Pengosekan Style

From this village, on the outskirts of Ubud, a new style sprang up during the 1960s. It concentrated on just a few natural components, such as birds, insects, butterflies and plants. STONE CARVING

Stone carvings were mainly used to decorate temples and palaces. There is little difference between the iconography decorating temples and that of private buildings. Gateways represent the dividing line between the inner and outer worlds and as such are the recipients of some of the most fantastic carvings. Bali’s modern-day centre of stone carving is the village of Batubulan, situated halfway between the towns of Denpasar and Ubud. TEXTILES

One of the most striking things about Bali is the rich variety of cloths and materials that are to be seen in thousands of shops throughout the island. However, only a small proportion of these are indigenous to Bali. The myriad of batik clothes and sarongs available everywhere, are mainly imported from Java. Bali does have a very rich textile industry of its own. The beautiful Songket fabrics, worn by performers of traditional dances, are a good example. In Songket gold and silver threads are woven into the cloth to create complex motifs of birds, butterflies and flowers. Endek, or weft ikat, is another common method used in Bali. In weft ikat weaving, the weft threads are dyed to create the design and are then woven with plain warp threads.

The least common form of weaving to be seen in Bali is the Geringsing, or double-ikat, and it is perhaps the most sought after. In Geringsing both the warp and weft threads are dyed to their final designs before being woven together. With the exception of certain areas in India and Japan, this weaving technique can only be found in the small Bali Aga village of Tenganan, East Bali. WOOD CARVINGS

Wood and stone carvings have traditionally been featured largely in temple and palace architecture. Immaculately carved demons and mythical beings decorate pillars, door panels, lintels and window shutters with the object of protecting the buildings from evil intruders. Scenes of legendary figures placed within a floral décor, set a more pleasant and educational tone. With the arrival of European influences, wood carving started to develop a long more innovative and commercial lines. Today, whole villages specialise in producing certain styles of work. The village of Mas, near Ubud, is the best known for its carvings of female figures, Buddhas, characters from Hindu epics, the traditional topeng (mask) and Wayang Wong masks. DANCE & DRAMA

Dance and drama have played a historically important role in Balinese society. Through this medium, people learned about the tales of the Ramayana, Mahabarata and of other epic stories from Balinese history. The following are brief descriptions of some of the more well-known dance-dramas that can be seen at regular performances throughout Bali. Baris - This is a warrior’s dance. It is usually performed by men, either solo

or in a group of five or more.

Barong & Rangda - This is a story about the struggle between good and evil.

Good is personified by the Barong Keket, a strange but fun-loving creature in the shape of a shaggy semi-lion. Evil is represented by Rangda, a witch.

Kecak - The most famous of the Balinese dances, originated from the Sanghyang dance choirs, holds its uniqueness in the entrancing ‘Kecak, kecak’ chant. The Kecak as a dance developed in the 1930s, in the village of Bona, where it is still performed regularly. Legong - This dance tells a story of princess Rangkesari being held captive

by King Lakesmi. Rangkesari’s brother, prince Daha, gathers an army to rescue his sister. The Legong is a very classical and graceful dance, always performed by prepubescent girls, who can be as young as eight or nine years old.

Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet) - Wayang Kulit is one of the great story-telling traditions of the Javanese and Balinese people. The wayang show usually consists of a small four-piece orchestra, which provides the musical accompaniment, around sixty ‘puppets’, carved out of flat pieces of water buffalo hide, and the dalang or puppet-master. The good characters speak in ancient ‘Kawi’, whereas the evil or coarse ones speak Balinese. The Bali Agung Show

The Bali Agung Show at the Bali Safari and Marine Park is an inspiring cultural performance dedicated to the entertainment of both local and international audiences. This spectacular show celebrated its 1500th performance on Jan 19, 2016. With regular scheduled performances over the past five years, the colossal and spectacular Bali Agung Show is arguably the longestrunning theatrical production in Indonesia’s theatrical history. The Calonarang dance tells the tale of a widow queen, Walunateng Dirah from Girah village who possessed the ability to conduct powerful black magic. Her powers were said to be stronger than the King Erlangga’s, causing fear among all that nobody would dare to ask for her daughter’s hand in marriage. The widow, furious, placed a curse on the entire land and people began to die without reason, which caused a state-wide war. The King then sought the help of a Priest, Mpu Bharadah, who defeated Calonarang with his white magic. Ramayana

The Ramayana dance tells the epic love story of Rama and Sita whose love was too strong to be torn apart. Expect exciting scenes of treachery among the royal family, lost-in-the-jungle scenes, kidnappings, brave rescue missions by Hanoman the Monkey King, and a romantic ending where Rama is forever reunited with his love, Sita.

If you’ve not yet tried these sports, we recommend that you start at Sanur or Tanjung Benoa Beach where you can hire the necessary equipment, either right on the beachfront (at a beach club) or at one of the hotel-run dive centres. Instructions are available at these diving centres. Most of the centres offer International (PADI) diving certificates but be sure to check their PADI Resort Code as well, for the insurance and medical facilities. It is advisable to look for diving centres that have a ‘five-star’ PADI Approval Rating. Please note that Bali’s only decompression chamber is at Sanglah Public Hospital in Denpasar (see ‘Hospitals’ in the ‘Essential Info’ section for more info). BALIPLUS June 2017 |

how to get around

Photo Courtesy Of Rustian Aditya Nugraha

Easy Riding car HIRE Car rental agencies can be found in all the major tourist areas. Prices start from approximately USD 30 a day for a Suzuki-style jeep (Jimny) and about USD45 for a new Kijang jeep. Organize and arrange your car rental needs for a holiday or business stay. Most rental cars in Bali are in decent shape, BUT you should check them thoroughly before signing any forms. Always carry an international driver’s license with you. Motorbike rental You can find bikes for rent almost everywhere. Prices usually start from around USD6/day for a standard 125cc motorbike. Scooters, affectionately called ‘Bebeks’ (Ducks), start at around USD5/day. Always check the bike before parting with your cash. In Indonesia you have to wear a helmet by law and carry an international drivers license! Bicycle/Mountain Bike Cycling can be a cheap and enjoyable way to get around and about. It does, however, take some fitness to ride around the more central and hilly regions! The northern coastal roads are ideal for longer trips. You can find bike rental shops in all the main tourist areas. Bemo Public transport in the form of mini-vans is by far the cheapest way to travel, although not the most comfortable! Tours Organised tours relieve you from the hassle of trying to navigate your own way around. You do have to follow itineraries however, so spur of the moment sight-seeing is not an option on these. Ayodya Resort Bali promises to astound any weary traveller – even those who think they’ve seen it all. A majestic façade featuring a beautiful Balinese water garden with carved dragons and statues will impress you as you drive up its grand circular driveway. Inside, it’s a replica of a Balinese water palace, filled with breathtaking stone and wood carvings. The grand lobby extends over a beautifully manicured garden that encircles a large lake before meeting the golden sands of Mengiat Beach, and then the pristine blue of the sea. Standing on 11.5 acres of land, the Ayodya is a hotel built to honour Balinese culture, history and architecture. There are many positives that come with decades of experience including stellar service, marvelous amenities and that true, authentic and unmatched Balinese experience. Once you escape into this “Kingdom of Hospitality”, it’s easy enough to forget the outside world and all of your troubles. All 537 rooms and suites are gracefully designed to combine classic Balinese touches with modern convenience, and come with fantastic marble-clad bathrooms. It’s all very luxurious and comfortable but the resort was made to be explored; our favourite is the stretch of verdant lawn located between the beach’s golden sands and the Lagoona Restaurant, which serves delicious, mouthwatering delicacies from around the world – a must try is the wood-oven pizza, easily one of the best on the island. Dining here comes with a view; the beach is decorated with strikingly colourful beanbags, umbrellas and flags, creating the perfect backdrop against the clarity of the startling blue sky. Tall trees 68

and palms rustling in the breeze and sounds of the waves create the ideal ambience for an afternoon of relaxation. Don’t miss the sunset, head to the Beach Bar for cocktails, mocktails or jamu and for dinner, try a uniquely different setting by dining on the lawn; with low tables, carpets and pillows under

fairy lights against the pink and purple sky. Ayodya has 8 F&B outlets including 5 Restaurants, 3 Bars & Lounge offering a variety of cuisines including the freshest seafood and Balinese delicacies to Japanese and Mediterranean cuisines. Enjoy a cultural dinner with traditional dance performances like the Kecak and Legong Dance at the Balinese Theatre. The Octopus will impress with classic Italian favourites and remarkable interior featuring hardwood and beautiful stained-glass walls. At Genji, it’s all about Japanese favourites; dine teppanyaki style or sit at the sushi bar or the tatami rooms. The Ayodya is also a favourite choice for weddings, with ceremonies on the beach followed by a garden party. No Balinese holiday is complete with a spa treatment and Ayodya Spa by Mandara offers indulgent body treatments to soothe the body and soul. The little ones can have a smashing good time at the resort’s Camp Ananda, a fully-supervised kids club featuring various programs packed with games and creative activities and those combining work and holiday, there are 14 versatile meeting rooms and remarkable venues by the beach for private functions.

North Bali’s Hidden Gem Nils Normann, born 1965, is a Danish advertising executive, film maker and hotelier – he is also owner and founder of The Damai resort, a picturesque and luxurious resort located in Lovina, North Bali. Located only a few hours away from Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, The Damai promises a magnificent and tranquil experience for guests who want to escape the hustle and bustle of life. In this pristine resort built to complement nature, you’ll be sequestered within its natural surroundings, with every opportunity to rebalance, heal and unwind in the heart of untouched North Bali. Nils tells us how The Damai came to be; like many other travellers he aimed to experience as many countries as possible. Once the stamp was in the passport, the trophy was secured and it was on to the next destination. It is a rare thrill to experience a new city or a new island for the first time, but in the early 1990’s, Nils discovered how rewarding it could be to return to a place. “It was great, actually. On this small Malaysian Island you would suddenly have friends. You would know where to stay, where to eat, and you didn’t have to go on the obligatory circuit to all the official tourist spots, because you have already done it last year. And you could just relax, and experience the place.” Already next year he returned to the very first place he ever visited 78

in Asia, namely Bali. And after rediscovering the island, he found himself in the string of fishing villages on Bali’s undiscovered North Coast, known collectively as Lovina. “It was Lonely Planet that got me here, actually. Back then it was described in the book as the last hippie paradise, you know, bonfires at the beach, people playing guitars while dolphins played in the bay. Which was sort of true, but obviously written by someone head over heels in love with the place.”

The thought of building a home in Asia had been rummaging within him for months, and it was here, in the hills behind Lovina he finally found his spot. The village of Kayu Putih sprawls on the lush mountainside behind Lovina, stretching from sea level all the way to the top of the mountains ridge. Today, it is an exceedingly pleasant farming village with stunning views of the North Bali coast, all the way to the distant volcanoes of Java and blessed with an ever-present cool mountain breeze. Nils’ original plans of a private villa for family and friends soon grew to become the original The Damai resort. On a green hill overlooking the sea, The Damai is a small resort with a big view. Here you can visit some of Bali’s most iconic attractions or find your own hidden gems. Lounge by the pool while enjoying views of the distant volcanoes and rediscover authentic and organic Balinese dining before indulging in a spa treatment.

Fun, fresh and organic – these are three crucial elements that make up Sereh Gourmet Supermarket in Jimbaran. Those looking for the freshest quality meats and produce can now happily wonder their days away among Sereh’s impeccably arranged displays while enjoying the supermarket’s unique and cosy, welcoming interior. You won’t find glaring fluorescents here or morbid tiles; the interiors have been designed with warm lighting set against natural stones and hardwood – all in all, it’s a very chic environment to shop in and we promise that you will be delighted. Aside to fresh produce, you can also find fresh bakery, brewed coffee, a wine cellar and selected imported gourmet products and dry groceries. When speaking to one of the founders of Sereh Gourmet Supermarket, Ibu Hermien S. Witjaksono said that she found inspiration for Sereh from her trips to Europe. She said, “The idea behind Sereh was to create a unique supermarket that would provide a different experience for shoppers. There is a growing demand for fresh, healthy, gourmet foods that are in short supply here in Bali and it is our aim to meet this demand. While doing so, we want our guests to feel comfortable, to take their time and to enjoy shopping here at Sereh. Grocery shopping is quite literally seen as an “errand”, and we have created an environment that hopefully changes this to an enjoyable and relaxing activity.” We have to agree; upon walking into Sereh, there is a feeling of entering a pleasantly chic community market, where one could find gourmet fresh produce and imported products in a luxurious setting. Even the displays are inviting and we were pleasantly surprised to learn that while shoppers could choose any cut of meat from the meat counter, they could also have it marinated or cooked at supermarket’s on-site and semi-outdoor café, right next to the building’s façade. Under 86

wooden trellis and intimate brick and stone settings, guests can also choose to have breakfast, lunch and dinner here – order from the significantly wide range available off its menu including local Balinese, Indonesian and International favourites. There are daily specials, and meat lovers can satisfy their carnivorous side with the Texas Style Smoked Beef Brisket, Beef Tenderloin Steak and Lamb Chops.

The supermarket is very selective in what it chooses to sell to its customers; it insists that a majority of its products must be fresh, organic and of extremely high quality – you won’t find many canned or preserved foods here. Its many customers, including locals, expats and holidaymakers, have expressed their immense appreciation for this. Imported goods are shipped in from all over the globe to Sereh including Japan, Europe, China and India. We learned that the selection process are quite intricate; all to ensure extreme customer satisfaction. There are also activities for the whole family to enjoy including weekend salsa performances, cooking classes and BBQ every day. To reap more rewards, do join the Sereh membership programme to earn points which can be exchanged for products.

There are many other lavish treatments to choose from at DaLa Spa, including the 128-minute “Velvet Rose”, which begins with the Rose Splash Foot Ritual, followed by a 60-minute signature massage and ending with a nurturing Rose Quartz facial using THÉMAÉ Paris products. We’re all no strangers to Happy Chappy Chinese’s delicious and succulent Chinese food. In fact, its tantalizing selections have made it the number one most sought-after Chinese restaurant on the island. Despite all this, the masterminds behind this all-time favourite go-to aren’t comfortable just lying back and relaxing, even at the top. During our recent visit to the distinct red and gold Imperial style restaurant in Jl. Beraban Seminyak, we discovered that things are being kicked up a notch with a slew of new dishes that we can’t get enough of; Dim Sums and classic Chinese front-runners that have been given exciting new twists and that special Happy Chappy touch. This is a new chapter for Happy Chappy and an extension to its vision where the brand ventures a little bit further outside the box. The Specials Menu changes every month with extremely thrilling melting pot of Indonesian and classic Chinese and Hong Kong dishes. Through these new experimental eats, diners will witness the brand’s braver and more adventurous new side. We tried the Spicy Firecracker Chicken cooked in Dried Chillies, Garlic and Szechuan sauce and declare it to be highly recommended. Tender and juicy, this dish is perfect for sharing and even ideal for a pre-dinner snack with a glass of wine or cocktails. Also going both ways is the Salt & Pepper Tofu; one would imagine it braised as usual but this time this usually modest but flavoursome dish has been given new life. The star of the show is definitely the Hong Kong Pork Belly Satay; a new innovative way to try this cherished and much beloved classic while giving it a touch of Indonesia. Then come the Dim Sums – we enjoyed the Prawn & 104

| BALIPLUS June 2017

John Dory with XO Sauce Shu Mai immensely; soft, tender and bursting with flavours, here’s a taste that you won’t find in a traditional Shu Mai. Another time-honoured sweetheart that underwent a Happy Chappy makeover is the Chive and Chicken Dumpling and the Braised Broccoli with Chicken and XO Sauce. We rejoiced to learn that one of Malaysia’s most iconic dishes is now also available here, the Spicy Seafood Laksa that comes with Prawns, Tofu, Udon Noodles and spoonful

after spoonful of heavenly mouthwatering delight which goes well with a Happy Chappy Bubble Tea. When you’re in the mood, the Dragon’s Den Bar at Happy Chappy is a welcoming and seductive enclave, a comfortable and relaxing cocoon from the stresses of life. We have always enjoyed its dim, sexy and elegant interior that’s set against dark hardwood, plush sofas and armchairs, beautiful oriental lamps, paintings and décor all illuminated by candles and the magnificent salt-water aquarium. Don’t underestimate the cocktails here; there are none quite like them on the island!

General Things

THAT YOU SHOULD OR SHOULDN’T DO...

do

don’t

...change money at a reputable looking location, use your own (or the hotel’s) calculator before changing!

...forget to bring your passport (or a photocopy of your ID) with you at all times-as well as a copy of Bali Plus!

...put on loads of high factor waterproof suncream (especially if you intend to spend a lot of time in the water).

...swim outside designated swimming areas. Currents can be very strong so swim between red and yellow flags.

...drink a lot of bottled water and eat a lot of fresh fruit - do your body a favour.

...do drugs! It could lead to death penalty. Enough foreigners reside in Bali in courtesy of the Govt. prison service!

...try not to step on offerings in the street (walk around them). ...be careful with your belongings at all times. Crime is on the increase and can ruin your holiday. Cases of handbag snatching have been reported so please leave important documents in your hotel safe (carry photocopies) and wear your bag across your shoulders! ...respect the slow pace of processions. If stuck behind one don’t honk your horn! ...haggle when buying (except on price-tagged goods). ...buy ‘lmmodium’ to relieve bouts of Bali belly.

...touch people’s heads - it is very offensive to Hindus. ...enter a temple during menstruation. Sorry ladies! ...forget to add salt to your food and to drink lots of water-you probably sweat more here than at home. ...worry too much about the ice - it’s government quality controlled in established bars and restaurants. ...forget to look and listen while crossing the road. Cars may stop, motorbikes may not! ...forget to reconfirm your flight 72 hours prior to flying.

...have a great holiday! 124

A Word of Advice ATTENDING CEREMONIES:

Remember these are serious occasions and should be treated as such. Religious guidelines: • Always wear a sarong and sash. • Do not walk in front of people that are praying. • Do not use a flash camera or point your camera into the priest’s face! • Never sit higher than the priest or the offerings. • At cremations, do not get in the way of the attendees - however important that photographic opportunity is! • Women are not allowed to enter temples during menstruation. N.B. When attending Special Ceremonies or Anniversary Celebrations as a guest or onloocker, small donations are gratefully received. Your donation will help in paying for the offerings, and upkeep of the temple.

DANGEROUS SPORTS:

Make sure you either have personal insurance or travel insurance that will cover any accident.

DRIVING:

In Bali, always expect the unexpected, always keep your eyes open and your mind on driving. Beware of motorbikes! It is best to rent a car with full insurance as this will save time and money if you are involved in an accident. You must use a helmet at all times and have a valid license.

MONEY CHANGERS:

Be very careful when changing your money. Always check the rate of exchange and commission (if any). Most importantly, always count your money before you leave the premises and, if you can, bring your own calculator as the ones used by some places can be a little ‘inaccurate’.

PETTY CRIME:

There have been a few cases of handbags being snatched after tourists have cashed money at Banks or Money Changers! Put your money away in your ‘burn-bag’ or hold onto your hand bag tightly! When changing large amounts of money please check each note carefully as there are a number of (noticeably) fake notes in circulation. When trying on garments do not take your jewellery off and leave it lying around - give it to a friend or leave it in the hotel safe. When at a spa - use the jewellery box or locker provided for jewellery.

SWIMMING IN THE SEA:

Currents and undertows can be strong. Always swim between the red and yellow flags and don’t swim too far out! Please, do not leave your belongings unattended on the beach.
