April 1 - Ngembak Geni Day

Held in connection with and following “Nyepi,” the Balinese New Year day of solemnity and quietness - Ngemback Geni Day is a happier event, with the island coming back to life. Involving maidens and bachelors of the villages to strengthen brotherhood and understanding among the young - the day’s celebrations are started with prayer at the local temples, and proceed with group members hugging one another while getting thoroughly soaked by water. It is always a cheerful moment for all, and usually held around 3pm. And while it may not be any celebrated national holiday here or have any connection with Balinese tradition - those westerners who can’t help but share some laughter and jokes with their friends and family may choose to play around a bit in their own celebrations of the classic “April Fool’s Day.”

General Election - April 9

It is voting time for Indonesia! Time to put the power of democracy to the test, as the 2014 Indonesian election will be held to elect members of both national and regional legislatures. 46 parties have registered to take part, while only 15 parties pass the requirements set by the General Elections Commision - including representation in every province of Indonesia, with a minimum of 30 percent female membership. Expect much excitement, heat, and passion in the air as locals take to the voting booths to choose who shall take the political lead.

Full Moon - April 14

If you’re one of those who tend to get a bit luny when the full moon comes, prepare to lock yourself in the house - or head out for some brightly-lit adventure. Fancy a full moon party? They may not be as big as the legendary Koh Phangan in Thailand, but you can get down and boogie on the beach at Padang Padang late into the night. Prefer a more wholesome experience? Head to Pura Tirtha Empul during the day, where you will find and can join in with many Balinese performing purification rituals in the holy springs. Indonesia may not be a predominantly Christian country, but regardless of religion, Good Friday is an important day throughout the world for followers of the Christian faith. The holiday may not be the happiest of days, being the mark of the day Jesus was crucified, but is an important reminder for Christians to celebrate and honour their beliefs of the meaning of Jesus’ death. Many Christian churches celebrate Good Friday with a subdued service, usually in the evening, where Christ’s death is remembered with solemn hymns, prayers of thanksgiving, a message centered on Christ suffering for our sakes, and observance of the Lord’s Supper. Whether or not Christians choose to “celebrate” Good Friday, the day’s events ever remain a monumental anniversary for Christians everywhere, with the death of Christ on the cross being the paramount event of the Christian faith. 12 | Baliplus

ABOUT BALI

With the reputation of being one of the most beautiful and diverse tourist spots in Asia, Bali annually attracts almost 7,000,000 visitors from around the world. Geographically, situated between the islands of Java and Lombok, Bali is small, stretching approximately 140 km from east to west, and 80 km from north to south. The tallest of a string of volcanic mountains that run from the east to the west is Gunung Agung, which last erupted in 1963. Located just 8o south of the Equator, Bali boasts a tropical climate with just two seasons (wet and dry) a year with an average temperature of around 28oC. The wide and gently sloping southern regions play host to Baliâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famed rice terraces, which are among some of the most spectacular in the world. In the hilly, northern coastal regions, the main produce is coffee, copra, spices, vegetables, cattle and rice. The Balinese have strong spiritual roots and despite the large influx of tourists over the years, their culture is still very much alive. The main religion is Agama Hindu Dharma, which, although originally from India, is comprised of a unique blend of Hindu, Buddhist, Javanese and ancient indigenous beliefs; It is very different from the Hinduism practiced in 28 | Baliplus

India today. Naturally creative, the Balinese have traditionally used their talents for religious purposes and most of the beautiful work to be seen here has been inspired by stories from the Ramayana and other Hindu epics. The majority of Baliâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 4,000,000 people live, for the most part, in tight village communities with large extended families. The largest towns are Denpasar (the capital) and Singaraja in the north. The main tourist area stretches from Kuta to Seminyak. Kuta became a major attraction during the tourist boom of the 70â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s because of its famous white-sand beaches, the surf, and stunning sunsets. Today, the Kuta to Seminyak stretch is a major tourist destination, with hundreds of hotels, bars, restaurants and shops. Those in search of a little peace and quiet tend to head for the more sedate resorts of Sanur and Candi Dasa on the east coast, or Lovina in the north. Nusa Dua, on the southern-most peninsula of the island, houses many five-star hotels. The central village of Ubud, in the hilly region of Gianyar, has also blossomed as a tourist attraction and is now considered to be the artistic and cultural centre of Bali. Baliplus | 29

CULTURE Although there are no artifacts or records dating back to the Stone Age, it is believed that the first settlers on Bali migrated from China around 2500 B.C. By the Bronze era, around 300 B.C., a fairly evolved culture already existed on Bali. The complex system of irrigation and rice production, still in use today, was established around this time.

It appears that the main religion around 500 A.D. was predominantly Buddhist in influence. In 670 A.D., a Chinese scholar (Yi-Tsing), on a trip to India, reported that he had visited a Buddhist country called Bali. It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t until the 11th century that Bali received the first strong influx of Hindu and Javanese cultures. With the death of his father around AD 30 | Baliplus

1011, the Balinese Prince, Airlanggha, moved to East Java and set about uniting it under one principality. Having succeeded, he then appointed his brother, Anak Wungsu, as ruler of Bali. During the ensuing period there was a reciprocation of political and artistic ideas. The old Javanese language, Kawi, became the language used by the aristocracy, one of the many Javanese traits and customs adopted by the people. With the death of Airlanggha, in the middle of the 11th century, Bali enjoyed a period of autonomy. However, this proved to be short-lived, as in 1284 the East Javanese King Kertanegara, conquered Bali and ruled over it from Java. In 1292, Kertanegara was murdered and Bali took the opportunity to liberate itself once again. However, in 1343, Bali was brought back under Javanese control by its defeat at the hands of Gajah Mada, a general in the last of the great Hindu-Javanese empires, the Majapahit. With the spread of Islam throughout Sumatra and Java during the 16th century, the Majapahit empire began to collapse and a large exodus of aristocracy, priests, artists and artisans to Bali ensued. For a while Bali flourished and the following centuries were considered the Golden Age of Bali’s cultural history. The principality of Gelgel, near Klungkung, became a major centre for the arts, and Bali became the major power of the region, taking control of neighbouring Lombok and parts of East Java. The European Influence The first Dutch seamen set foot on Bali in 1597, yet it wasn’t until the 1800’s that the Dutch showed an interest in colonising the island. In 1846, having had large areas of Indonesia under their control since the 1700’s, the Dutch government sent troops into northern Bali. In 1894, Dutch forces sided with the Sasak people of Lombok to defeat their Balinese rulers. By 1911, all the Balinese principalities had either been defeated in battle, or had capitulated, leaving the whole island under Dutch control. During World War II, the Dutch were expelled by the Japanese, who had occupied Indonesia from 1942 to 1945. After the Japanese defeat, the Dutch tried to regain control over their former colonies, but on August 17, 1945, Indonesia was declared independent by its first President, Sukarno. After four years of fighting and strong criticism from the international community, the Dutch government finally ceded and, in 1949, Indonesia was recognized as an independent country. The People Life in Bali is very communal with the organisation of villages, farming and even the creative arts being decided by the community. The local government is responsible for schools, clinics, hospitals and roads, but all other aspects of life are placed in the hands of two traditional committees, whose roots in Balinese culture stretch back centuries. The first, Subak, concerns the production of rice and organises the complex irrigation system. Everyone who owns a sawah, or padi field, must join their local Subak, which ensures that every member gets his fair share of irrigation water. The other community organisation is the Banjar, responsible for arranging all village festivals, marriage ceremonies and cremations. Most villages have at least one Banjar and all men have to join when they marry. Banjars, on average, give membership to 50 up to Baliplus | 31

100 families and all Banjars have their own meeting place called the Bale Banjar. As well as being used for regular meetings, the Bale (pavilion) is where the local gamelan orchestras and drama groups practice. Religion Balinese people are Hindu, yet their religion is very different from the Indian variety. The Balinese worship the Hindu trinity Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu, who are seen as manifestations of the Supreme God Sanghyang Widhi. Other Indian gods like Ganesha (the elephant-headed god) also appear, but more commonly. Shrines associated with the many gods and spirits, uniquely Balinese, are found all over the island. Balinese people strongly believe in magic and the power of spirits, basing much of their religion on this. They believe good spirits dwell in the mountains and that the seven seas are home to demons and ogres. Most villages have at least three main temples, namely: (1) the Pura Puseh, or ‘temple of origin’, facing the mountains; (2) the Pura Desa, or village temple normally found in the centre; and (3) the Pura Dalem, aligned with the sea and dedicated to the spirits of the dead. Aside from these ‘village temples’, almost every house has its own shrine. Some temples, for 32 | Baliplus

example Pura Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung, are considerably more important and people from all over Bali travel there to worship. Offerings play a significant role in Balinese life as they appease the spirits and thus bring prosperity and good health to the family. Every day small offering trays (canang sari), containing symbolic food, flowers, cigarettes and money, are respectfully put on shrines, in temples, in front of houses and shops, and at dangerous crossroads. Festivals are another great occasion for soothing the gods. The women carry huge, beautifully arranged pyramids of food, fruit and flowers on their heads while the men might conduct a blood sacrifice through a cockfight. The gods are invited to descend and join the festivities with music and traditional dances to go with it. This kind of event is extremely exciting, memorable and well worth attending. As their designs followed strict aesthetic and religious guidelines, the artists generally didn’t have much room for personal expression. With the arrival of European artists in the beginning of the 20th century, this soon began to change. Local artists started to develop their own individual styles.

PAINTING

Until the start of the 20th century, the dominant form of painting was the portrayal of Hindu epics by painters and illustrators called ‘Sangging’. Aside from making large representational paintings, the ‘Sangging’ were expected to decorate everything from gourds, wooden altars, bamboo vessels, headboards for princely bed chambers and, in particular, they were expected to illustrate astrological wall hangings on bark paper or cloth. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that western influences reached Bali. The use of Asian symbols in the works of, among others, Paul Gauguin, Toulouse Lautrec and Camille Pissaro, 34 | Baliplus

created a new trend for Asian-influenced art and for European painters to move to Bali. Ubud’s fame regarding art can be traced to the arrival of the German painter Walter Spies and the Dutch Rudolf Bonnet. There is a much wider range of artistic styles today. Ubud Style Influenced by the western use of perspective and everyday-life subject matter, the Ubud style is one of the most ‘expressionistic’ of all Bali’s schools. Despite this, Ubud’s art still retains many traditional features, including attention to detail and stylized characters. Batuan Style Strongly wayang based (puppet). This style involves hundreds of intricately painted representations of Balinese life, filling every available nook and cranny of the canvas. Keliki Style Keliki paintings measure 20cm by 15cm. They contain scenes of mythical and Ramayanic characters engaged in battle, good versus evil, on sinister backgrounds. Pengosekan Style From this village, on the outskirts of Ubud, a new style sprang up during the 1960s. It concentrated on just a few natural components, such as birds, insects, butterflies and plants.

STONE CARVING

Stone carvings were mainly used to decorate temples and palaces. There is little difference between the iconography decorating temples and that of private buildings. Gateways represent the dividing line between the inner and outer worlds and as such are the recipients of some of the most fantastic carvings. Bali’s modern-day centre of stone carving is the village of Batubulan, situated halfway between the towns of Denpasar and Ubud.

TEXTILE

One of the most striking things about Bali is the rich variety of cloths and materials that are to be seen in thousands of shops throughout the island. However, only a small proportion of these are indigenous to Bali. The myriad of batik clothes and sarongs available everywhere, are mainly imported from Java. Bali does have a very rich textile industry of its own. The beautiful Songket fabrics, worn by performers of traditional dances, are a good example. In Songket gold and silver threads are woven into the cloth to create complex motifs of birds, butterflies and flowers. Endek, or weft ikat, is another common method used in Bali. In weft ikat weaving, the weft threads are dyed to create the design and are then woven with plain warp threads. The least common form of weaving to be seen in Bali is the Geringsing, or double-ikat, and it is perhaps the most sought after. In Geringsing both the warp and weft threads are dyed to their final designs before being woven together. With the exception of certain areas in India and Japan, this weaving technique can only be found in the small Bali Aga village of Tenganan, East Bali.

WOOD CARVING

Wood and stone carving have traditionally been featured largely in temple and palace architecture. Immaculately carved demons and mythical beings decorate pillars, door panels, lintels and window shutters with the object of protecting the buildings from evil intruders. Scenes of legendary figures placed within a floral dĂŠcor, set a more pleasant and educational tone. With the arrival of European influences, wood carving started to develop a long more innovative and commercial lines. Today, whole villages specialise in producing certain styles of work. The village of Mas, near Ubud, is the best known for its carvings of female figures, Buddhas, characters from Hindu epics, the traditional topeng (mask) and Wayang Wong masks 36 | Baliplus

DANCE & DRAMA

Dance and drama have played a historically important role in Balinese society. Through this medium, people learned about the tales of the Ramayana, Mahabarata and of other epic stories from Balinese history. The following are brief descriptions of some of the more well-known dance-dramas that can be seen at regular performances throughout Bali. Baris - This is a warrior’s dance. It is usually performed by men, either solo or in a group of five or more. Barong & Rangda - This is a story about the struggle between good and evil. Good is personified by the Barong Keket, a strange but funloving creature in the shape of a shaggy semi-lion. Evil is represented by Rangda, a witch. Kecak - The most famous of the Balinese dances, originated from the Sanghyang dance choirs, holds its uniqueness in the entrancing ‘Kecak, kecak’ chant. The Kecak as a dance developed in the 1930s, in the village of Bona, where it is still performed regularly. Legong - This dance tells a story of princess Rangkesari being held captive by King Lakesmi. Rangkesari’s brother, prince Daha, gathers an army to rescue his sister. The Legong is a very classical and graceful dance, always performed by prepubescent girls, who can be as young as eight or nine years old. Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet) - Wayang Kulit is one of the great story-telling traditions of the Javanese and Balinese people. The wayang show usually consists of a small four-piece orchestra, which provides the musical accompaniment, around sixty ‘puppets’, carved out of flat pieces of water buffalo hide, and the dalang or puppet-master. The good characters speak in ancient ‘Kawi’, whereas the evil or coarse ones speak Balinese.

DIVING & SNORKELING

Everyone should know that Bali has wonderful underwater world with abundant marine life and beautiful coral garden awaiting to be explored. There are many diving sites in Bali that attract divers from around the globe. Some of the diving sites, like USAT Liberty Shipwreck and Amed diving sites are suitable for beginner diver. If you’ve not yet tried these sports, we recommend that you start at Sanur or Tanjung Benoa Beach where you can hire the necessary equipment, either right on the beachfront (at a beach club) or at one of the hotel-run dive centres. Instructions are available at these diving centres. Most of the centres offer International (PADI) diving certificates but be sure to check their PADI Resort Code as well, for the insurance and medical facilities. It is advisable to look for diving centres that have a ‘five-star’ PADI Approval Rating. Please note that Bali’s only decompression chamber is at Sanglah Public Hospital in Denpasar (see ‘Hospitals’ in the ‘Essential Info’ section for more info). 42 | Baliplus

Where to Dive?

Tulamben Bay inc. USAT Liberty Shipwreck (north east Bali) – (*P4) - World-famous for the 120m USAT Liberty Shipwreck, Wall/Drop-off and Coral Garden, and offering incredible shore-diving with very easy conditions, Tulamben Bay is Bali’s most popular dive location. Amazing selection of resident marine life. Suitable for all levels including Try-Diving and snorkelling. 2.5hrs by minibus from South Bali. Tulamben Area inc Kubu Wreck – (*P5) - Only a short distance south of Tulamben Bay (by jukung, local outrigger fishing boat) are other wonderful sites such as Emerald, Alamanda, Batu Kelebit and Seraya Slopes. 10 mins by road, north of Tulamben Bay, Kubu is the location of Bali’s newest shipwreck. Suitable for all levels. Amed (north east Bali) – (*P5) - The diving outside this sleepy fishing village combines reef and wall diving that can be accessed from shore or by jukung. Pretty corals, good variety of fish, warm water. Suitable for all levels including Try-Diving and snorkelling. 2.5hrs by minibus from South Bali. Blue Lagoon (Padangbai, east coast Bali) – (*N8) - The closest area to South Bali with good diving. There are companies offering diving around Sanur/Nusa Dua but it is only for people who want to Get Wet. Blue Lagoon has a white sand bottom and is a treasure-trove of marine life. A good choice for Try-Diving and snorkelling. 1.5hrs by minibus from South Bali. Mimpang/Tepekong (Padangbai, east coast Bali) – (*O8) - These two sites offer breathtaking diving, however are for experienced divers only due to the steep walls, cold water and (often strong) currents. Expect

schooling fish, Mola-Mola (Ocean sunfish) in season, White-tip reef sharks and maybe turtles. 1.5hrs by minibus from south Bali then 10 mins by boat. Gili Biaha (Padangbai, east coast Bali) – (*P7) - Chiselled black walls with healthy corals, good diversity of fish, sharks and frequent pelagic visitors; good visibility. Best dived at slack high tide; can be surgy. AquaMarine is of only a few companies offering Biaha. For experienced divers only. 1.5hrs by minibus from South Bali then 30 mins by boat. Gili Selang (Padangbai, east coast Bali) – (*P7) - Small island on Bali’s eastern point, like all exposed sites, can have ripping currents but you may see White-tip reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse, turtles - even dolphins. For experienced divers only. 1.5hrs by minibus from South Bali, then 40 mins by boat (can be accessed from Amed). Nusa Penida (offshore island on Bali’s east coast) – (*N10) - Nusa Penida is the largest of the three offshore islands. The water here is fairly cold (due to the ocean currents) but often startlingly clear, with gorgeous corals and prolific fish, occasional turtles, reef sharks and in August to September Mola-Mola (Ocean sunfish). Some dive experience required. Accessed by boat from Padangbai and Sanur. Toyapakeh (Nusa Penida) – (*N9) - Nusa Penida’s most popular dive site, has good visibility and rich, impressive coral formations with big bommies. The profusion of colourful soft corals provides hiding places for many kinds of marine life. Some dive experience required. Accessed by boat from Padangbai and Sanur. SD, Ped, Sental (Nusa Penida) – (*N9, *O9) - Three lovely dive sites on one long reef with many soft corals and fish such as sweetlips, lionfish, moray eels, scorpionfish and reef sharks, in addition to turtles, nudibranchs and crabs. Some dive experience required. Accessed by boat from Padangbai and Sanur. Manta Points I and II (Nusa Penida) – (*N10, *N11) - With dramatic limestone cliffs descending straight into the ocean, the surge can be strong; no currents. The Mantas are 2-4m wide and seen quite shallow. Mola-Molas, Bamboo sharks, Shark rays, tunas, Tigermackerels and dolphins may also be seen. Some dive experience required. Accessed by boat from Padangbai and Sanur. Nusa Penida (Crystal Bay) – (*N10) - Best known for Mola-Mola in July-November’s cold waters! 1. Hanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Reef (Off the coast of Gili Air) Off the coast of Lombok, the Gili Islands, offers some of the best diving in the region. Hanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Reef is a wonderful dive site to see turtles and a must for macro lovers. You will find beautiful coral bommies, bat fish, angelfish, box fish, frog fish, leaf scorpion fish, spotted morays, pipe fish, mantis shrimps, nudibranchs and so much more. Suitable for all level divers. 2. Shark Point (Off the coast of Gili Trawangan) Shark Point is one of the most popular dive sites in the Gilis. CLIMBING

It takes about 3-6hours to climb Mt. Agung, Bali’s highest mountain (see Bali Road Map - *N5) and it takes a day (return trip) to reach the summit of Mt. Batukaru (see Bali Road Map - *I5). During the Galungan festival, people from all over the island travel here to worship. Pura Jayaprana - Northwest Bali. Superb views of Menjangan island. The surrounding coral reefs can be seen from this temple. Pura Rambut Siwi - *E6 - Southwest Bali, (10km from Medewi), Another cliff-top temple with views of Java and on a clear day, Mt. Bromo. Steps down the cliff from the temple lead to a black sand beach where one can swim.

TEMPLES - INLAND

Pura Besakih - *N6 - Besakih, Karangasem regency Northeast Bali. Bali’s most important temple with greates over 80 shrines to the varius gods and spirits. Pura Luhur Batukau - *J6 - Tabanan, South Bali. Dedicated to the god of Mt. Batukau, this temple is a small haven for flower and bird lovers. Pura Yeh Gangga - *K6 - near Mengwi, Tabanan. Pura Ulun Danu Batur - *L3 - near Batur village. The second most important temple after Besakih, housing more than 90 shrines. Worth visiting at any time of year but especially during the Odalan Festival (usually in March but depending on the full moon), which is dedicated to the goddess of the crater lake and said to control the irrigation systems for the entire island. Pura Ulun Danu Bratan - *J3 - near Bedugul. This temple has several shrines which are located on both the lake’s shore and on various small islets. The following three temples are between Seribatu and Tampaksiring, north of Ubud; *L6. Pura Gunung Kawi - Set in a ravine in Tampaksiring, the temples Candi’s are carved into the rock face. There are five Royal Tombs at the rear of the temple complex. Pura Tirta Gunung Kawi - A water temple dedicated to the Rice Goddess. Near the temple grounds is a small spring-fed lake with sacred goldfish, which are said to be the guardians of the Spirit of the spring.Pura Tirtha

Empul - *L6 – Considered the holiest spring in Bali, this temple is frequently visited by Balinese seeking mental cleansing and physical healing.

Brahma Vihara Ashrama Buddhist Monastery - *H3 – near Lovina. (combine with a visit to Banjar Tega Hot Springs). The Largest Buddhist monastery in Bali, set in beautiful surroundings. CAVE Goa Gajah or Elephant Cave - *L7 – near Teges, Gianyar regency. Dating from the 11th century, there are conflicting opinions as to whether this cave was originally a Buddhist or a Hindu heritage. Although not very large, it boasts some interesting carvings. Goa Lawah or Bat Cave - *N8 – Klungkung regency. Famous for the thousands of fruits bat that live here, this can be an interesting, if pungent, experience. Goa Karang Sari - *O10 – on Nusa Penida Island, Southeast of Bali. This cave extends over 200 meters into the hillside and during the Galungan festival hosts a torchlight procession and various ceremonies. PALACES Puri Semarapura - *M8 – Klungkung. A palace dedicated to the God of Love, this palace was home to the Kings of Klungkung. Although only two pavilions and the entrances gate remain, the hall of justice, Bale Kerta Gosa, is worth seeing for its beautifully painted ceiling and carved pillars WATER PALACES Taman Ujung Water Palaces - *P7 _ near Amlapura, East Bali. Set in a beautifully landscaped park, the ruins of this palaces are a tribute to the slightly eccentric designs of King Anak Agung Ngurah. Puri Agung Kanginan - *P6 – Karangasem, Amlapura. Built from a hotch-potch of different styles, including Chinese, European and Javanese, this place is fascinating architecturally, a monument to Balinese ability to blend outside influences into their own culture. Tirtha Gangga Royal Bathing Pools - *O6 – near Amlapura, Karangasem regency. Great views of both Mt. Agung and the Lombok Strait. This palaces was damaged during the 1963 eruption of Mt. Agung, but the pools still function and can be enjoyed for a small fee VILLAGES Asak – near Amlapura, East Bali – Traditional costumes, stone carvings and woven crafts. Bungaya - *O7 – near Amlapura, East Bali – As in Asak, this village specializes in traditional arts and crafts. Krambitan - *I8 – near Tabanan - Specializes in bamboo instruments and music. Negara - *D6 – West Bali – Famous for bull races. Sawan - *K3 – near Singaraja, North Central Bali – A picturesque village where Gamelan instruments are made. Tenganan - * O7 – A Bali Aga village renowned as a centre for weaving. The only places in Indonesia where ‘geringsing’ cloth is made. (see Arts & Artist / ‘Textiles’).

Trunyan - *M4 – on the shores of Lake Batur, Northeast Bali – An original Bali Aga village set in a fantastic landscape. Lake Batur - *M4 – Mt. Batur, Bangli regency. The largest lake in Bali and home to the goddess Danu, This lake lies within the crater of MT. Lake Bratan - *K4 – Mt. Catur near Bedugul. Location of the superb Ulun Dabu Temple, this lake offers both superb scenery, and watersports such as jet-skiing for the more adventurous. Lakes Buyan and Tamblingan - *J4 - Mt. Lesong in Buleleng province. Less visited, these lake offer great walks and the chance of a little solitude for those wishing to escape the hustle and bustle of the tourist scene.Trunyan - *M4 – on the shores of Lake Batur, Northeast Bali – An original Bali Aga village set in a fantastic landscape.

HOW TO GET AROUND car HIRE Car rental agencies can be found in all the major tourist areas. Prices start from app. USD30 a day for a Suzuki-style jeep (Jimny) and about USD45 for a new Kijang jeep. Organize and arrange your car rental needs for a holiday or business stay. Most rental cars in Bali are in decent shape, BUT you should check them thoroughly before signing any forms. Always carry with you an international driver’s license. Motorbike rental You can find bikes for rent almost everywhere. Prices usually start from around USD6/day for a standard 125cc motorbike. Scooters, affectionately called ‘Bebeks’ (Ducks), start at around USD5/day. Always check the bike before parting with your cash. In Indonesia you have to wear a helmet by law and carry an international drivers license! Bicycle/Mountain Bike Cycling can be a cheap and enjoyable way to get around and about. It does, however, take some fitness to ride around the more central and hilly regions! The northern coastal roads are ideal for longer trips. You can find bike rental shops in all the main tourist areas. Bemo Public transport in the form of mini-vans is by far the cheapest way to travel, although not the most comfortable! Tours Organised tours relieve you from the hassle of trying to navigate your own way around. You do have to follow itineraries however, so spur of the moment sight-seeing is not an option on these.

HEADING TO THE OTHER SIDE OF BALI

s you head north away from the tourist areas of Kuta and past Ubud, you will see the landscape become even greener and lush with tropical vegetation. Lovina and the vicinities surrounding Singaraja are quite different from the southern villages in Bali. Here you will discover a more humble atmosphere that has changed very little even though this area has been visited by tourists for many years. There are a few nice beach-side restaurants along the main road through Lovina, but there are also still many traditional warungs serving a variety of Indonesian food. If you enjoy the outdoors you will have your pick of many wonderful activities, such as dolphin watching, walking, trekking, etc. For those of you who are a bit more adventurous, definitely visit Menjangan Island which is renowned for having the best diving and snorkeling in Bali. West Bali has many wonderful sites to see and things to do. The Bali Barat National Park is also worth a visit. Thus, with all that Northern and Western Bali has to offer, visitors are advised to spend at least one week touring these areas. 72 | Baliplus

Historical Landmarks

The Royal line of Buleleng, Singaraja dates back to more than 500 years ago when the son of the King of Gelgel, Pandji Sakti, left Klungkung in order to establish a new kingdom in Den Bukit, Buleleng, North Bali. Upon reaching the mountain peak, he felt very thirsty, so he plunged his magic kris into the ground and water flowed from that spot. To this day, water flows from this spring making life possible for the animals and people who live at the top of this mountain range. After uniting Den Bukit (now Buleleng, North Bali) he became the king and built two palaces named ‘Sukasada’ just South of Singaraja and a third palace in Singaraja in 1604. This was the beginning of the Kingdom of Buleleng and Singaraja, the capital town of Buleleng regency. In the mid 19th century, the Dutch invaded Singaraja, destroyed the palace and deposed or killed most of the Royal family. By 1858, the Dutch appointed a new Raja of Buleleng. The young, intelligent king supported the rebellion against the Dutch in Banjar in 1872. In 1929, his son, I Gusti Putu Djantik, was appointed by the Dutch to be the regent of Buleleng. He rebuilt the Puri Agung and then along with the Dutch, founded the library of Lontar named Gedong Kirtya in front of the Puri grounds. He died in 1944 and was succeeded by his eldest son, Anak Agung Pandji Tisna, who was the last person to hold the title of Raja Buleleng.

Temples in the north & west

The Beji Temple which represents Northern Bali’s colorful architectural style is definitely worth a visit. There are a variety of interesting sculptures on display. Maduwe Karang Temple is known for its humorous unique wall carving called “Gentlemen Riding a Bicycle.” Jagatnatha Temple is the largest temple in North Bali and is located in the center of Singaraja. The Sanggar Dwi Mekar is one of the best Balinese dance and Gamelan Schools headed by Pak Durpa. This is the cultural training ground for 250 students from North Bali. They have performed many international shows in Japan, Belgium and Germany. Gedong Kirtya is an outstanding library in Singaraja housing thousands of ancient Balinese documents. The library’s contents, ‘Lontar,’ consist of Balinese literature, medical texts and even comic strips called ‘Prasi.’

Places to See in the North

On your way to Singaraja or Lovina are some lovely places to visit. Bedugul is renowned for its beautiful ‘Ulun Danu’ temple in Lake Bratan. The lake is situated in a volcanic crater with breathtaking views. The lush tropical grounds are a lovely place for a picnic or stroll. There are also some exotic birds and snakes on display which make a great photo opportunity. Be sure to bring an umbrella, because it frequently rains in this region of Bali. away, holds 200 hectares of land. One can drive through a portion of the gardens and see colorful birds, beautiful flowers & exotic trees. You can continue your trip by heading straight up North from Bedugul to Gitgit Waterfalls which are the tallest waterfalls in Bali. The inviting cool waters of the river below will entice you to take a dip. Coffee, clove & rice terraces surround these lovely falls. Once you have arrived in the Singaraja/Lovina area, you will also have many choices of things to see and do.

Places to Stay In the North

There are many choices of accommodations in the Lovina & Singaraja area. If you want to get off the tourist track and stay in a luxurious eco-friendly resort, then check out Damai Lovina Villas (Ph: 0362 41008) which is just a few kilometers from the center of Lovina. This is a dolphin & wild life resort located in Kalibukbuk Village and just a few minutes from Lovina Beach. Alternatively, you can look for very reasonably priced accommodation right in the center of Lovina next to the beach. There is a good variety of small hotels offering rooms for under $20.00USD a night including breakfast.

Other Activities In the North

The new â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Bali Treetop Adventureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; park located inside the Botanical Gardens in Bedugul, is a great place for families with children. There is a whole network of rope climbing activities that are exciting but very safe for everyone, as each rope course is rated by its level of difficulty and monitored by staff. If you are seeking something truly unique, then be sure to visit Pura Dalem Jagaraga in Sawan Village. The Balinese Gamelan musical gongs are made here. There is also some great trekking to be had. Be sure to make the trek to the five waterfalls of Kutilang which is surrounded by a lush tropical jungle. Lovina also offers great dolphin watching tours which can be arranged through any local hotel or resort. There is also some great deep sea fishing to be had here.

Getting There & Around Taxis connect Ngurah Rai International Airport to Bedugul in approximately 2.5 hours with an additional hour to get to Lovina. This can be costly, so we recommend taking a shuttle which can be booked at any travel agency, hotel or tourist office in most major towns throughout Bali. To get to West Bali you can go by way of the South West Coast or head straight up North and go along the North West coast. If you are more daring, then rent a car and head out on your own. SANUR

HEADING TO THE OTHER SIDE OF BALI

erived from the two words “saha” and “nuhur”, which means having a passion to visit a certain place, Sanur represents a name that carries important history for tourism in Indonesia, and Bali more specific. It was on the very beach of Sanur that the first Netherland troops set foot on the island of Bali in 1906. This was also the exact place that the first war occurred between the Netherlands against the community of Bali in defending their land from colonialism. This war was later known as the Puputan Badung, a heroic event that is strongly remembered by every individual Balinese until today’s generation. Talking about Balinese art, Sanur is the true pioneer of arts and tourism instead of Ubud. It was Sanur that Le Mayeur, a Belgium artist, made his home in the 1930s. He fell in love with the people and the abundance of nature, which inspired him to paint hundreds of paintings. And it was here too that Donald Friend, a gifted illustrator, also known as Tuan Raksasa or Lord Devil Donald, who bought much of the beach on which today’s Sanur is built. Located in the southern part of Bali around 30 minutes from the Ngurah Rai International Airport, Sanur is famed for its beautiful strip of pure sandy beaches across the coastal line. It is also reputed for its spectacular sunrises, which literally mark a new day in the life of the Balinese. In addition to being home to some of Bali’s best known hotels, Sanur is also a very cozy, comfortable residential area. As such,

it is much quieter than Kuta and has more “Balinese character” than the newer Nusa Dua resort area. As the first witness of the Bali tourism industry, Sanur has a lot of historical landmarks such as The Bali Hyatt, Villa Batu Jimbar, and the Inna Grand Bali Beach Hotel, the first international hotel in Bali where the 1st President of Indonesia, Soekarno, and the Prime Minister of India, Mahatma Gandhi, have stayed. By the 1960s, Sanur was the “in” place where Walter Spies, Sophia Loren and even some royalty kept a low profile and immersed themselves in paradise. Mick Jagger and his former wife Jerry Hall even made Sanur as their second home. They stayed at Tandjung Sari Hotel and were wedded there in a traditional Hindu Balinese ceremony in 1990. Sanur also has a well-deserved reputation for magic. In the ’70s, wars were ongoing between the shamans of Sanur and of the Kamasan village in the KlungKung regency. It is said that many people witnessed strange occurrences during this time such as red lights darting above houses and other unexplainable phenomena. Today, Sanur retains its laid-back atmosphere with a few changes for the good. Thankfully, there are no more signs of magic, though. situated on the main road, Jl. Danau Tamblingan, which runs through central Sanur. There are also many good restaurants on the beach or down side streets. If you are looking for a more authentic culinary experience, then you should definitely check out Warung Mak Beng, a favorite among locals since 1941. She is reputed to serve the best crunch Fried Fish and mouthwatering Fish Soup in Sanur. The beaches of Sanur are perhaps the best feature of this quaint village. They span from as far north as Padang Galak Beach, with its expansive stretch of black sand, and down south to Mertasari Beach. Several beaches lie in between, and all blend together seamlessly with an attractive boardwalk that spans the tract from Sanur to Mertasari. Visitors can take leisurely walks or cycle stress-free because no motorbikes are allowed here. Recently, all Sanur beaches have been reclaimed under a project sponsored by the World Bank and the Japanese government. Tons of sand were brought in from the ocean to replace the sand that had been washed away. The boardwalk was also repaired and extended to Mertasari Beach, and several small gazebos were built on the jetties for visitors. Sanur’s beaches are ideal for families because the water is much calmer than at Kuta or Seminyak and therefore a lot safer for children. Many fun beach activities are also held in the area for everyone to enjoy. By the Hyatt Bali at Semawang Beach, visitors can choose from a variety of water sports, such as parasailing, jet skiing, water skiing or even book a diving trip to Nusa Penida, where they can view all kinds of beautiful tropical fish and colorful coral. For those seeking less thrills and who prefer to experience a bit of the “old” Bali, try renting a jukung — a traditional wooden boat decorated with multi-colored paint. These boats are customarily used for fishing the seas, but local boat owners often supplement their income by taking tourists out to the reef for snorkeling or sightseeing. Yes, there are hawkers here too, but they don’t hassle visitors as much as they do on other beaches, and escaping them is easy enough with a smile. And one event not to be missed is the annual Sanur Village Festival (SVF) at Inna Grand Bali Beach and Segara Beach hotels from Aug. 15-19 featuring cultural performances, sports, culinary events and other fun activities. Domestic and international tourists are invited to enjoy the festival, which will also include painting, bonsai exhibitions, a jazz festival, sport activities and cultural parade. The Heart of Balinese Art Situated near the islands centre and midway between Kuta and the Kintamani peaks, Ubud is by many considered to be much cooler than Kuta. Apart from being home to a vast array of modern art galleries, craft shops and studios, this charming conglomerate of villages is also the ‘royal centre’ of Bali with numerous palaces and temples to be visited. It also offers some of Bali’s best dining experiences. If you’re more of an outdoorsy type, try biking, walking, trekking, bird watching, herb gathering, kayaking and/or rafting amid the phosphorescent rice paddies, lush tropical gorges and palm waving rivers so characteristic of Ubud. Thus, with all that Ubud has to offer, visitors are recommended to stay at least 2-5 days. Many visitors make Ubud their home base as it is so centrally located and close to all the other attractions in Bali.

HISTORY Over the centuries, Ubud has been influenced by numerous waves of invading armies. In 1343, the East Javanese Hindu Majapahit dynasty conquered Bali; their descendants still inhabit the palaces of Ubud today. After the fall of the Majapahit Empire in the 16th century (and as a result of the consequent Islamization of Java), many scholars, artists, intellectuals and priests migrated to Bali, and more specifically to the small kingdoms in and around Ubud. At the end of the l9th century, the Dutch occupation sparked an interest in Bali by Western artists and intellectuals (e.g. Walter Spies, Colin McPhee and Rudolf Bonnet), many of whom visited Bali and settled here during the 1930s. From the 1970s and onwards backpackers and artists started to arrive, many of whom fell in love with this hilly Shangri-la and still live in Ubud today.

BUYING ART Ubud is overflowing with arts and crafts, including: oils, inks, pastels, ceramics, castings and sculpture, basket making, rattan work and weaving, stone, wood, bone and coconut carving, metalwork, furniture making and of course, jewellery. The quality is good and prices are flexible so bargaining is de rigueur. Check out the up-market art galleries and museums for a guide to some of the best works of art. Exploring back streets and outlying villages with a driver is worthwhile, but you may want to be sure that the driver is following your desired itinerary and not his route for commissions! Ubud is noted for maintaining the tenets and manifold observances of Agama Hindu Bali. Thus, colourful cere-monies and sacred offerings will make out a natural part of your stay. Ask and you may be warmly invited to a tooth filing, wedding or cremation cere-mony! If planning to attend a ceremony, please read our ‘A Word of Advice’. PALACES In pre-colonial Bali, the palaces (or Puri) were the primary patrons of art, music, dance and literature. Although the old Balinese feudal system was superseded by the Dutch colonial government more than 80 years ago, the Royals (or Tjokordas) still retain an important role in Ubud’s society. Many of the Ubud royals have opened hotels and restaurants within the walls of their own Palace homes; so you can in fact sleep and eat in them and, in some cases, join in with the ceremonies of the resident royal family. ATTENDING CEREMONIES: Remember these are serious occasions and should be treated as such. Religious guidelines: • Always wear a sarong and sash. • Do not walk in front of people that are praying. • Do not use a flash camera or point your camera into the priest’s face! • Never sit higher than the priest or the offerings. • At cremations, do not get in the way of the attendees - however important that photographic opportunity is! • Women are not allowed to enter temples during menstruation. N.B. When attending Special Ceremonies or Anniversary Celebrations as a guest or onloocker, small donations are gratefully received. Your donation will help in paying for the offerings, and upkeep of the temple.

MONEY CHANGERS: Be very careful when changing your money. Always check the rate of exchange and commission (if any). Most importantly, always count your money before you leave the premises and, if you can, bring your own calculator as the ones used by some places can be a little ‘inaccurate’.

DRIVING: In Bali, always expect the unexpected, always keep your eyes open and your mind on driving. Beware of motorbikes! It is best to rent a car with full insurance as this will save time and money if you are involved in an accident. You must use a helmet at all times and have a valid license.

SWIMMING IN THE SEA: Currents and undertows can be strong. Always swim between the red and yellow flags and don’t swim too far out! Please, do not leave your belongings unattended on the beach.
