Grace Poe insists: I grew up, voted in San Juan MANILA, June 12 (Mabuhay) – In the midst of the citizenship issue that threatens her qualifications to run for higher posts of the land, Senator Grace Poe on Friday insisted she grew up in San Juan City and voted there during the last elections as a “daughter” of the city. “Alam niyo po, ako ay bumoboto dito sa San Juan. Malalim ang ugat ko [rito]. Hindi man ako rito ipinanganak, dito ako lumaki at nagkaisip, [at] hanggang ngayon nandito pa rin ang bahay ng aking ama at ina,” Poe said in her speech during the Independence Day celebration on Friday at the Pinaglabanan Shrine. “Ang magagandang alaala ng aking pagkabata at aking pagdadalaga, naririto sa siyudad na ito; ito pa rin ang tinatawag ko na tahanan dahil naririto at binabalik-balikan ko ang aking nanay. Anak ako ng San Juan at natutuwa ako na makiisa sa mamamayan nito at ako ay proud na maging taga-San Juan sa araw ng ating kalayaan,” she added.

Earlier in June, United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) interim president and Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco raised the issue of Poe’s citizenship, saying Poe doesn’t meet the 10-year residency requirement to run either for president or vice president in the 2016 polls. Tiangco even provided the media a copy of Poe’s certificate of candidacy (COC) for the senatorial elections in 2013 as proof of his claim. In her COC, Poe wrote “six years and six months” on the space provided for “Period of residence in the Philippines.” Counting from there, she would be six months short of the requirement in the May 2016 elections, Tiangco said then. Also, Tiangco said that the senator could be held liable for perjury if her declaration in her COC was not accurate as the certificate was a sworn document. But later, Tiangco apologized “for having caused damage” to the See GRACE POE, page 3 Senator Grace Poe inspects a Tabor assault rifle at the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) headquarters after gracing the 13th anniversary of the agency on Tuesday where she was the keynote speaker. For the first time, Aquino marks Independence Day in Visayas STA. BARBARA, Iloilo, June 12 (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III on Friday led Independence Day rites in this historic town, where the Philippine flag was first raised outside Luzon during the revolution against Spanish colonizers. This is the first time Aquino commemorated Independence Day in the Visayas during his five years as President. Aquino arrived in the Sta. Barbara town plaza at past 8 a.m., where he was welcomed by top government officials and residents dressed in traditional Filipiniana attire. The town plaza was the site of

the inauguration of the Provisional Revolutionary Government in 1898, when Filipinos were fighting for independence from Spain. The President also raised the Philippine flag in front of the Sta. Barbara Municipal Hall. Simultaneous flag-raising ceremonies were likewise held across the country to mark the 117th anniversary of Philippine independence. Aquino also paid tribute to General Martin Delgado, who led uprisings against the Spanish colonial government in Iloilo, through a wreath-laying ceremony. Security was tight all over Sta. Eight kids rescued in online sex abuse raid: PHL gov’t Manila, Philippines (AFP) Thursday 6/11/2015 – Filipino police have freed eight children from a house in Manila where they were allegedly sold for prostitution and forced to have sex for an online audience, authorities said Thursday. Two people, including the alleged mastermind of the abuse Christopher Villanueva and the mother of three of the children, have been arrested after the raid in the Philippine capital on Wednesday night. Villanueva is accused of forcing the children, all but one of them girls aged between 13 and 17, and another 18-year-old girl to have sex with him and each other in front of web cameras for watchers in Asia, the US and Europe. Police, acting on a tip-off from the US Department of Homeland Security, found sex toys, web cameras and laptops during the raid on his rundown house in Taguig, a southern Manila suburb. “It is always shocking how people can be so perverse and callous when they abuse children,” Alex Nuqui, head of the National Bureau of Investigation’s anti-human trafficking division, told AFP. MANILA, June 11 (Mabuhay) – Traveling to the Philippines reportedly 21 times using her US passport as late as 2009 could hurt Senator Grace Poe’s chances of qualifying to run for higher office next year. Former University of the East law dean Amado Valdez said Poe’s use of a US passport as late as 2009 was “indicative” that she still does not consider the Philippines her domicile at the time. “Na-lose niya ang Philippine citizenship niya noong nag-American citizen siya. She lost her residency when she established permanent residence in the US,” Valdez said.

“This is considering that she renounced her Filipino citizenship [when she moved to the US and acquired citizenship there], unlike Imelda,” said Valdez in a text message, referring to a 1995 Supreme Court ruling that allowed the former First Lady to run for a post in Leyte despite her long absence there. Domicile is defined as the “permanent home, the place to which, whenever absent for business or pleasure, one intends to return, and depends on the facts and circumstances, in the sense that they disclose intent.” Former UP law dean Pacifico Agabin meanwhile said Poe’s res-

idency in the Philippines should “presumably” start in 2010, given that she was still using her US passport a year before that. It was in 2010 that Poe said she had renounced her US citizenship so she could be appointed to the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB). Agabin had said the 10-year residency rule for those aspiring for the highest posts of the land should be followed because it was “explicitly” stated in the Constitution. NHCP website hacked on Freedom Day MANILA, June 12 (Mabuhay) – Hackers struck anew on Independence Day, this time defacing the website of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. The website (http://nhcp.gov. ph/) showed a Philippine flag on top of a black background. A message by Global Security Hackers on the site questioned President Aquino if he has done enough for the country in the past five years. “Greetings Mr. President. It’s been five years since you’ve been elected on your position. And since then, we have been observing you carefully. In those years, Do you think you’ve done enough for the country? In those years, Do you think our economy improved? Or it became worst just like the

5 Malaysian terrorists in Basilan Foreigners suspected to be ISIS members MANILA, June 12 (Mabuhay) – At least five Malaysian terrorists who are reportedly in Basilan are suspected to be members of the extremist jihadists Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Security analyst Professor Rommel Banlaoi said he has received information from his Malaysian intelligence contacts that the five terrorists are hiding in Mindanao after fighting in Syria and Iraq.

“[They were] trained by ISIS and fought in Syria and Iraq, and they are already hiding in Mindanao,” he said. “The presence of the five Malaysians in the Philippines indicate that ISIS presence in the country is not imagined.” He added that the five arrived in the country in 2014. The Armed Forces of the Philippines has confirmed the presence of the five Malaysian terrorists in Basilan. However, it denied that the five are confirmed ISIS members. The AFP said four of the terror-

ists are identified as Ustadz Ahmad, Hadji Jama, Ustadz Kadir, and Ustadz Kamal. They have yet to identify the fifth one. An unnamed military intelligence officer said the five are called “local ISIS” by other terrorists in the area although there has been no confirmation that they are members of the international ISIS. Meanwhile, AFP public affairs chief Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc said that they would be making an announcement once they confirm the presence of ISIS in the country.

“Natatanggap natin na may reports nga na diumano’y may ISIS na members dito, hindi natin maisantabi ang mga speculation na ‘yon dahil sa presensya ng armed conflict dahil ginagamit ito ng ISIS,” he said. “Ang armed conflict, uulitin ko, wala siyang proof as of now.” In October 2014, a student in Zamboanga City said members of ISIS were recruiting students from a university there. The student from Western Mindanao State University said ISIS has been recruiting students

for two months, adding that each recruit would be given P70,000. In August of the same year, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and the Abu Sayyaf Group claimed to have pledged allegiance to ISIS. A spokesman for the BIFF said, however, that is is not sending fighters to Syria nor is it recruiting members for the ISIS, which is also called the Islamic State. Just last April, AFP chief Gen. Pio Catapang Jr. maintained that there are no ISIS militants operating in the country. (MNS)

S. Korea reports 15th MERS death, seven new cases By Jung Ha-Won

A monitor connected to a body temperature scanner shows passengers arriving from South Korea at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Tuesday. The WHO said the outbreak of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in South Korea is the largest seen outside the Middle East. (MNS photo)

Seoul, South Korea (AFP) Sunday 6/14/2015 – South Korea Sunday reported its 15th death from the MERS virus as the growing outbreak that has now infected 145 forced one of the nation’s biggest hospitals to suspend most services. The latest fatality from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome was a 62-year-old man who died Sunday afternoon in the southern port city of Busan, the city council said. He was diagnosed on June 7 after being infected in Seoul’s Samsung Medical Center – a major hospital and the epicenter of more than 70 cases. The health ministry Sunday also confirmed seven new cases of the virus, including four from the Samsung hospital, bringing the total number of infections nationwide to 145. Among the seven is a paramedic who helped take a MERS patient to the hospital on June 7. On Saturday authorities announced that the ambulance driver also involved in transporting the patient – who died three days later – had contracted the virus. One of the other new patients was infected in the central city of Daejeon and another in Hwaseong, 43 kilometers (27 miles) south of Seoul. In order to prevent further infections among patients and medical staff, Samsung hospital

on Sunday temporarily suspended most operations. It will stop treating outpatients, admitting new patients and performing non-urgent surgery, hospital president Song Jae-Hoon told reporters. No visitors would be allowed, he said, adding he would decide on June 24 whether to continue the partial suspension. “We offer our deep apology and express regret to all of our patients who were infected here and those placed under quarantine,” Song said. The hospital – normally visited by more than 8,000 patients a day – has come under fire in recent weeks for failing to stem the spread of the virus among its staff and patients. Two doctors and three nurses have been infected so far. More than 400 patients, families and medical staff directly or indirectly exposed to the infected ambulance driver have been newly placed under quarantine, Song said. The overall number under quarantine – either at state facilities or at home – rose Sunday by more than 800 to 4,856. As the outbreak continued to expand, a South Korean man thought to have contracted MERS was hospitalized in the Slovak capital Bratislava on Saturday. The 38-year-old reportedly arrived in Slovakia on June 3 and works for a subcontractor of

Seoul carmaker Kia, which has a plant in the central European country. The man did not appear to have had contact with patients or to have visited venues where infections were reported at home, Seoul’s foreign ministry said Sunday. “He said he had not visited any hospital before leaving for Slovakia,” the ministry said in a statement, adding he contacted the embassy in Slovakia on Saturday as he was developing symptoms such as fever. There is no vaccine or cure for MERS which, according to World Health Organization data, has a fatality rate of around 35 percent. The outbreak in South Korea – the largest outside Saudi Arabia – began when a 68-year-old man was diagnosed on May 20 after a trip to Saudi Arabia. The virus has since been spreading at an unusually fast pace, sparking widespread alarm in Asia’s fourth-largest economy. Businesses including shopping malls and restaurants have reported a sharp drop in sales as people shun public venues with large crowds. About 100,000 foreign travelers have cancelled trips to South Korea since the beginning of this month. A team of WHO experts who visited Seoul warned that the outbreak was “large and complex” and more cases should be expected.

Miriam wants probe on P53.14B taxes Malampaya contractors owe to gov’t MANILA, June 12 (Mabuhay) – Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago has called for a Senate investigation on the P53.14 billion underpaid income taxes Malampaya contractors allegedly owe the government. In Senate Resolution 1388, Santiago said the government must balance the interest between profit of investors and state revenue while at all times ensuring that public interest is primordial. She said the Commission on Audit stated that Malampaya gas field owes the government P53.14 billion in underpaid income taxes from 2003 to 2009. The contractors claimed that the amount

was deductible from the government’s 60 percent share of taxes during the period. This view was supported by the Department of Energy, but COA said Presidential Decree 87 and 1459 are clear that the minimum government share was 60 percent of the net earnings of any exploration. Among the contractors involved were Shell Philippines Exploration BV, Chevron Malampaya LLC, and Philippine National Oil Company. “Congress should intensify existing legislation to clarify revenue sharing issues on the Malampaya gas field project,” Santiago said in the resolution.

NBI chief: Claims of agents supplying phones to ‘Bilibid 19’ must be substantiated

MANILA, June 12 (Mabuhay) – National Bureau of Investigation Director Virgilio Mendez has challenged one of the “Bilibid 19” inmates to prove that NBI agents have been conspiring with detainees to sneak prohibited items like mobile phones into their detention cells at the NBI headquarters in Manila. “Unless the allegations are substantiated, it is a pity for the bureau to be accused of this wrongdoing,” Mendez told reporters, following accusations made by the inmateinformant that at least three NBI agents have provided the “Bilibid 19” access to communication devices in exchange for P1.5 million for each mobile phone. Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, while visiting the Bbilibid 19’s detention cells, found out from the informant that the NBI agents would pretend to be inspecting the Bilibid 19’s cells but instead would be sneaking in the mobile phones for the in-

mates. Two of the agents would be the ones handing out the phones, while a third one acts a “supervisor,” meaning they could all be working for a much higher ranking official. De Lima has already ordered the NBI agents being implicated investigated. Mendez emphasized that members of the Bureau of Corrections, and not NBI agents, are tasked to guard the Bilibid 19. NBI agents, he said, only visit the detention cells during surprise inspections. “Remember, our task is to secure the perimeter and the compound. The jail is an extension facility of the BuCor and it’s manned by a team of Bucor guards,” he said. “If we noticed unusual movements from the inside through our closed circuit television camera, our officials will outrightly conduct surprise inspections,” Mendez assured the public.

Sandiganbayan OKs Bong Revilla’s motion for additional therapy sessions MANILA, June 11 (Mabuhay) – The Sandiganbayan First Division has granted the request of detained Sen. Ramon Bong Revilla Jr. to increase the duration of his remaining physical therapy sessions on Thursday. In a short hearing Thursday morning, Revilla’s lawyer Reody Anthony Balisi read before the court his client’s motion to have the senator’s therapy sessions each extended to two hours instead of just an hour. In their motion, Revilla’s lawyers cited the recommendation of Senior Inspector Francisco Agudon III, the attending physician at the PNP General Hospital, to continue the senator’s physical therapy to complete six sessions and to increase the duration of his physical therapy to two hours per session. Revilla’s camp said such medical attention is necessary “so that he (Revilla) may

attain the fullest medical treatment possible, an so as not to render nugatory the proper medical treatment that this Honorable Court has kindly allowed him to undergo.” Attached medical records of Revilla revealed he is suffering from herniated nucleus pulposus lumbar region, Achilles tendinitis, osteoarthritis both heels and acute T/C de Quervain’s tenosynovitis. After hearing Revilla’s plea as read by his lawyer, First Division chairman Justice Efren Dela Cruz said in open court that “the motion is hereby granted.” It can be remembered that the First Division, in a resolution issued last week granted the motion of Revilla to undergo checkup and physical therapy at the Philippine National Police General Hospital (PNPGH) in Camp Crame for at least three times a week or six sessions for two weeks.

The hosts had led the medals table until Friday, thanks in large part to their 23 golds in the pool – including nine for Olympic prospect Joseph Schooling. They gathered another four on Saturday in waterskiing and sailing, but a shattering men’s hockey loss to arch-rivals Malaysia will not have improved the mood of home fans. The final, in front of a packed crowd at Sengkang Stadium, ended 2-2 but Malaysia triumphed 4-3 in the shoot-out, rounded off by Nor Azrul Abdul Rahman’s confident score. “The team dealt brilliantly with the pressure,” Malaysia coach Arul Anthoni told AFP. “I

Chanathip, glowingly compared to Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi, scored in the last minute to round off an emphatic semi-final victory in Singapore. The scale and manner of the win will install Thailand as raging favourites for Monday’s final against dark horses Myanmar, who rode their luck in the upset of Vietnam. It also gives Indonesia a chastening send-off into the international wilderness after they were suspended by world body FIFA over political interference.

from the junction of the IloiloDumangas Coastal Road in Jaro town. The Senator Benigno S. Aquino Jr. Avenue meanwhile spans the highway that starts from the Iloilo Diversion Road to the gate of the Iloilo International Airport. This road traverses the towns of Pavia, Sta. Barbara and Cabatuan.

“We are not Barcelona – we get gold first and then we talk,” Chanathip said. Earlier, even Myanmar’s coach Kyi Lwin was surprised by their 2-1 win over Vietnam, which came courtesy of a firsthalf penalty and a wickedly deflected winner. “I feel very surprised about the result and I would like to thank all our players,” said Myanmar’s coach Kyi Lwin. Elsewhere, Malaysia’s Yoong family of waterskiers grabbed three medals as 11-year-old Aaliyah took silver in the women’s jump and ex-racing driver Alex, 38, got bronze in both the men’s jump and slalom. Thailand topped the medals table at the last SEA Games in Myanmar in 2013. Malaysia, who will host the 2017 edition, lie fourth 45 with golds, 20 behind third-placed Vietnam.

The mother of three of the abused children who lives nearby was also arrested, accused of forcing her children to engage in sex for money. The other five children are also thought to come from the local area. The Philippines, where poor children are easy prey, has become a major hub for the billiondollar global cybersex industry. Online child abuse was the leading cyber-related crime in the Philippines last year, making up 46 percent of the 200 reported cases, according to the

justice department. Villanueva allegedly charged customers in the United States, Britain, Australia and Japan between $50-100 to watch the children having sex, Nuqui said. The 33-year-old Filipino was caught after a US agent, posing as an online customer, struck a deal to sleep with one of the girls at his house for 5,000 pesos ($111). Nuqui said Villanueva told the undercover US agent in an online chat: “They (the children) will fulfil all your fantasies. Come to the Philippines.”

His arrest is the second time in three months that US assistance has led Filipino authorities to cybersex suspects, as part of an international operation to stamp out paedophile rings run online. In February, a 51-year-old Australian, Gerard Peter Scully, was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing eight girls, including an infant, and murdering one of them. In March, four Filipino suspects were arrested and two children were rescued in a suburban Manila raid.

Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua was one of the diplomats who attended the event. Aquino shook hands and briefly spoke with the Chinese envoy before the vin d’honneur. Earlier this year, Aquino said the Philippines’ territorial row with China should be considered a global problem. China uses the so-called “nine-dash line” to assert ownership of almost the entire South China Sea, while the Philippines uses the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea as basis for its claim. The Philippines, which calls the disputed areas the “West Philippine Sea,” has already

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has refused to confirm or deny the authenticity of the travel records, stressing that members of the media inquiring about the issue are “not concerned parties” and that travel

records of Poe are “not being checked.” Valdez insisted the determination of Poe’s residency in the Philippines should commence on the time of the renunciation of her American citizenship. Acquiring a foreign citizenship would be indicative of her intent to abandon her former domicile, which is the Philippines and transfer it to the US, he added. Also, he said that whenever Poe would travel, the assumption of her intent to return to her domicile would be in the United States and not in the Philippines. He was earlier quoted as saying Poe lost her credibility when the travel logs, showing her trips using a US passport, were discovered even before she could clarify the issue on her residency.

She is a voter at Precinct 0349A. On the other hand, several legal experts said Poe is not qualified to run for higher office in the 2016 elections for failing to meet the 10-year residency requirement. Former UP law dean Pacifico Agabin said Article VII, Section 2 of the Philippine Constitution “explicitly” states that a presidential candidate needs to be “a resident of the Philippines for at least ten years immediately preceding such election.” Former University of the East law dean Amado Valdez meanwhile said Poe’s residency should not be downplayed because the 10-year rule is a “mandatory requirement.”

No plans yet Meanwhile, in an interview after the Independence Day ceremony on Friday, Poe said she has not yet made up her mind on running for higher office. “Ako po ay nagdadasal at naghahanda pa rin dahil hindi madaling desisyon iyan,” she said, adding that she may announce her decision before the filing of candidacy in October. Asked if she will accept President Benigno Aquino III’s offer to run for higher office under the Liberal Party, Poe said: “Iginagalang ko po ang ating Pangulo, bilib po ako sa kanyang pagkatao, siya po ay tapat, pero ang desisyon po na iyan ay sa kanilang partido. Aquino appeals for solidarity as nation marks 117th Independence Day ILOILO CITY, June 12 (Mabuhay) -- President Benigno S. Aquino III on Friday underscored the importance of solidarity as he led the celebration of the country’s 117th Independence Day in the town of Santa Barbara in Iloilo province. The President said that because of the united effort of our forefathers, the Philippines gained freedom after 300 years under Spanish rule. The Chief Executive also said unity gives power to the people to fight corruption and poverty. President Aquino also reminded the people of the importance of following the “straight path.” “Tiwala po ako na basta’t nananatili tayong tumatahak sa Daang Matuwid, maipagpapatuloy natin ang pagbabagong ating tinatamasa sa kasalukuyan. Sa pag-usbong ng makabagong teknolohiya at sa panahon ng social media, may higit na tayong kakayahan, at mas malalim na responsibilidad na makiisa sa paghahanap ng solusyon sa ating mga problema,” he said. He called on the people to remain steadfast and unified in advancing the welfare of their fellowmen. “Sa halip na maging pabigat sa ating kapwa, nawa’y gawin natin ang lahat, iambag natin ang ating maiaambag sa abot ng ating makakaya, upang sama-sama nating maiangat ang atin pong minamahal na bansa,” he further said. The Independence Day program began at 8 a.m. with a flag-raising ceremony, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the General Martin Delgado Monument at the Municipal Plaza, where the provincial government of Visayas was inaugurated on November 17, 1898. After the wreath-laying ceremony, the President visited the historic Santa Barbara Church. The church visit ended the program in Santa Barbara, as the President headed for the city center for the Vin D’Honneur ceremony, held at the newly renovated Provincial Capitol along Bonifacio Drive. At the Provincial Capitol lobby, President Aquino and Foreign Affairs Acting Secretary Laura del Rosario received senior government officials, among them Senate President Franklin Drilon, House of Representatives Speaker Feliciano Belmonte, Jr., Diplomatic Corps Dean Archbishop Guiseppe Pinto, heads of diplomatic missions and of international organizations. In his message during the Vin d’Honneur, President Aquino thanked the international community for their assistance especially during disasters. “My country has indeed achieved so much, yet we did not do this all on our own. We reached our goals sooner because of the international community, who recognized our earnest efforts and saw an honest government and a people truly worth helping. This, in turn, breeds in us a debt of gratitude – what we call utang na loob – shown in our determination to do our share to address the world’s problems,” said the President. (MNS)

JV defends Poe: Walang masama sa pagiging ampon MANILA, June 12 (Mabuhay) – Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito defended Sen. Grace Poe amid questions about her citizenship, saying there is nothing wrong with being a foundling and being adopted. In his speech at today’s Independence Day celebration in San Juan, Ejercito said he is against the allegation even though it came from a party-mate and friend. He asked Poe to forgive those behind the allegation. Ejercito, son of former president Joseph Estrada, assured Poe of his support should she decide to seek higher office in 2016. Poe was the guest speaker at the city’s celebration of independence. “Kung mangyayari lang naisin niya ang paglahok sa pambansang halalan sa isang taon, nais kong ipabatod sa inyo na dahil sa prinsipyo at panindigan na ating nakita sa pagsasama sa Senado, ako po ay inyong maaasahan. Secret lang. Nagkakaintindan na tayo, kapatid,” Ejercito said. United Nationalist Alliance president Toby Tiangco, an ally of VicePresident Jejomar Binay, was the first to question Poe’s residency requirement, saying the senator is not qualified to run for president in 2016. Another Binay spokesman, Atty. JV Bautista, later said Poe cannot run because as a foundling, she is considered “stateless.” Makati Rep. Abigail Binay later called for an end to the word war, saying the allegations had a negative effect on the Binay family. (MNS)

OPINION

Senators confident law vs political dynasties will be passed during Aquino’s term MANILA, June 11 (Mabuhay) – Senator Aquilino Pimentel III expressed optimism Thursday that the anti-political dynasty bill will be passed during the term of President Benigno Aquino III even after the House of Representatives decided to recast its version first. “Yes (I’m optimistic) because everyone seems excited about it,” Pimentel said. Senate President Franklin Drilon, on the other hand, said he will personally push for the passage of the proposed measure. “Ako mismo ang magtutulak niyan. Matagal na po iyang aking Itinutulak. admittedly, hindi madali, pero akin pong itutulak ulit sa aming pagbalik sa session,” he said in a radio interview Thursday. He added that public service should not be monopolized by any one family. “Sa akin po, ang karunungan sa serbisyo publiko cannot be a monopoly of one family. Iyan po ay nasa ating Saligang Batas, at iyan po ay dapat ipairal natin sa pamamagitan ng ating panukalang batas na ating itutulak sa Senado,” he said. Pimentel earlier said now is the best time to pass the anti-political dynasty bill. “I think the idea of having an anti-political dynasty law has the best chance of passing during the Aquino administration because, No. 1, it has passed the committee level in the House and they are now ready for plenary discussion. That is already a big achievement,” he said. The senator is now polishing his substitute bill which he is expected to submit to the plenary in July when the session resumes. Pimentel is hoping the bill will pass before October, when candidates will file their certificates of

candidacy. “Sana ma-pass na by October para guided na iyong mga magpa-file. I do not see any insurmountable obstacle even if we pass it beyond October na meron nang listahan of candidates because the Comelec can inform those candidates who will be affected by the anti-dynasty provision na they are affected so they have to choose,” Pimentel said. “Kung hindi naman ito talaga maipasa before October, we can easily make it applicable to the next scheduled election after 2016, and that could be the barangay elections,” he added. House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte said Wednesday that they want to make amendments on the bill’s parameters as regards the participation of families in politics and clarify definitions related to political dynasties. “In the course of intense discussions on (the bill) at the leadership level and at the level of various parties that make up the House majority, various issues have cropped up. We have commissioned a group to try to recast the bill,” Belmonte said. Already, there are oppositions to the bill. Senator Nancy Binay said there should be no law that would limit families who want to serve the people through elected posts. “Para kasi sa amin mas important is the will of the people, di ba? We subject ourselves to an election process. So ang number one din na kailangan is to ensure a clean and honest election,” she said when asked if she supports the anti-political dynasty bill. Binay’s father is Vice President Jejomar Binay, her sister is Makati Rep. Mar-Len Abigail Binay, and her brother is Makati City Mayor Junjun Binay. (MNS)

Sereno: 2016 polls to test strength of PH democratic institutions

MANILA, June 11 (Mabuhay) – The conduct of the 2016 polls is a “major test” that will determine the strength of the country’s democratic institutions. This is according to Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, who granted reporters a brief interview on the sidelines of the Supreme Court’s 114th anniversary celebrations on Thursday. Sereno said 2016 poses major challenges because the scheduled synchronized national and local elections will entail massive preparations. The high court, meantime, is gearing up for the expected flooding of election-related petitions, she added. “Hindi biro ang mag-launch ng national elections sa atin; I think everyone should be aware of the challenges that are ahead of us. Maraming legal questions na haharap sa atin kaya kailangan yung ating...nagkakaisa, that we provide the best pos-

sible quality of service in the form of justice to our people,” she said. “Many cases, of course. Wala na yan, trend na yan talaga, it’s a given. Ang job sa amin ngayon is to manage our time how to make sure that we can deliver all these thoughtful decisions in the appropriate time... we’re also very much aware of our role come election time. It’s time we prepare.” The chief magistrate refused to expound on the nature of election-related cases that are expected to be filed with the high court in the run-up to the polls. She gave the assurance, however, that a “systemic review” of processes and procedures is being undertaken by the SC and the judiciary, as a whole, to respond to the call of the times. “Ang intention natin is to make sure that all those who believe in the rule of law should be united in [its] pursuit,” Sereno said.(MNS)

Palace welcomes survey showing 54% of Filipinos enjoy freedom of speech MANILA, June 11 (Mabuhay) – Malacañang welcomed on Thursday a survey showing more than half of the Filipinos believe they enjoy freedom of speech under the administration of President Benigno Aquino III. ”The Philippines is the only country which does not imposes censorship or prior restraint for a free and open flow of information,” Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a text message. The Social Weather Station (SWS) survey said 54 percent of the 1,200 Filipinos said they are free to say anything they want “openly and without fear,

even if it is against the present administration.” The 2015 first quarter survey also showed that 22 percent believe they do not enjoy freedom of speech while 24 percent were undecided. According to the SWS, freedom of speech was highest under the Aquino administration at +42 in September 2013. The SWS survey showed 49 percent of respondents agreed that the government listens to what the public says compared to the 27 percent that disagreed for a “moderate” +23. Freedom of speech was lowest under the Aquino administration at +24 in March 2013. (MNS)

Clinton promises an America for everyone New York, United States (AFP) Saturday 6/13/2015 – Hillary Clinton launched Saturday her bid to become the first woman president of the United States, unveiling a progressive platform calling for tax breaks for the struggling middle class and universal preschool. Dressed in an electric blue pant suit, a confident and relaxed 67-year-old Clinton outlined a vision of equal opportunity, civil rights for all and an America leading the world in the first major rally of her campaign. Addressing several thousand ardent supporters in New York, the home turf where she served as senator, she emphasized her four decades in public service as the most qualified candidate to lead the country. Clinton emphasized her security and foreign policy credentials, promised to build the economy, strengthen families and communities, get unaccountable money out of politics and protect the country from threats. At the end, she was joined on stage by husband and former president Bill, their daughter Chelsea and their son-in-law Marc Mezvinsky, embracing, holding hands and waving to a rapturous sea of waving flags on Roosevelt Island. “I may not be the youngest candidate in this race. But I will be the youngest woman president in the history of the United States,” she said to cheers and applause. “And the first grandmother as well!” Clinton promised tax relief to small business owners, to make America the clean energy superpower of the 21st century. She vowed to make preschool and quality child care available to every child, make college more affordable by lifting “the crushing burden” of debt, equal pay for women, raising the minimum wage and an end to discrimination against the LGBT community. Clinton promised to maintain America’s global leadership, to counter threats posed by Russia, North Korea and Iran, cyberattacks and by the Islamic State extremist group in Syria and Iraq. Prosperity for all “America can’t succeed unless you succeed, that is why I am running for president of the United States,” she said to chants of “Hillary, Hillary.”

“Prosperity just can’t be for CEOs and hedge fund managers. Democracy can’t be just for billionaires.” She launched a stinging attack on the Republican party, painting her conservative foes as out of touch with a diverse electorate, and lampooned their tax breaks in favor of the super wealthy at the expense of the hard-working middle class such as nurses and small-business owners. “I am running to make the economy work for you and for every American,” she said. In a deeply personal speech, she drew on the disadvantaged background of her mother, who was forced to work as a maid aged 14 after being abandoned, and told voters that she understood first hand their problems. “My mother taught me that everybody needs chance and a champion. She knew what it was like not to have either one,” Clinton said. “That’s why I believe with all my heart in America and in the potential of every American to meet every challenge, to be resilient no matter what the world throws at you, to solve the toughest problems.” She cracked jokes in an effort to present a more human touch, met by whoops of delight, that referenced a lifetime in public service. She spoke on Roosevelt Island, named after America’s great World War II and New Deal president Franklin D. Roosevelt, and rooted her campaign in his legacy, as well as that of her husband and Barack Obama. “I’ve been called many things by many people,” she said to laughter. “Quitter is not one of them,” Clinton said to applause. “Like so much else in my life, I got this from my mother. When I was a girl, she never let me back down from any bully or barrier.”

UTREACH Congressional Gold Medal Sought for Filipino WWII Vets By Nimfa U. Rueda

LOS ANGELES— Legislators Thursday introduced a bill seeking to award a Congressional Gold Medal to Filipino and Filipino-American soldiers who fought during World War II. “Filipino veterans fought bravely alongside American forces during World War II, and our recognition of their service and sacrifice is long overdue,” said Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI). Gabbard and Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) held a press conference announcing the bill’s introduction. Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba also spoke at the press conference on behalf of the Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project. About 260,000 Filipinos fought for the United States during the war and were promised equal treatment as American veterans after the war. But in 1946, the US Congress enacted the Rescission Act that took away full recognition of the Filipinos and stripped them of their benefits, leaving bitterness in the former colony and decades

of campaigning to change US policy. In 2009, Congress approved a stimulus package that included one-time payments of $15,000 to Filipino veterans in the United States and $9,000 to those living in the Philippines. However, community advocates said thousands of veterans had their claims denied, usually because US authorities did not accept records from the Philippines, which were the former fighters’ sole means to prove their service. “The Filipino veterans of World War II have faced many challenges in their fight for compensation, family reunification, and verification of wartime service,” said Sen. Hirono. “Awarding the Congressional Gold Medal would go a long way toward making sure that their story is never forgotten.” The cosponsors of the bill include Gabbard, Hirono, Senators Brian Schatz, Harry Reid, Dean Heller and Tim Kaine; Congressmen Joe Heck, Juan Vargas, Mark Takai and Mike Thompson and Congresswoman Jackie Speier. Also attending the press conference were two Fil-Am veterans,

Purple Heart recipient Maj. Jesse Baltazar and retired Senior Chief Petty Officer Remigio Cabarcar. Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. said the announcement was very timely as the country celebrates its Independence Day on June 12 and prepares to observe Philippines-American Friendship Day on the 4th of July. “Our friendship has deep historical roots, which include fighting side by side in wars for liberation,” Cuisia said. “I am pleased to see this friendship continue to grow and hope that our veterans receive the recognition they deserve,.” The Congressional Gold Medal is awarded to those “who have performed an achievement that has an impact on American history and culture that is likely to be recognized as a major achievement in the recipient’s field long after the achievement.” The award is the US Congress’ highest expression of appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions. It is also one of the highest civilian awards in the United States, along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

NEW YORK, June 8, 2015 – Asia Society has announced the winners of the 2015 Best Asian Pacific American Employer Awards. Now in their sixth year, the awards honor employers at the forefront of promoting and developing Asian Pacific American (APA) leaders. The companies will were honored at the 7th Diversity Leadership Forum at Asia Society in New York. The awardees were selected based on the quality of their APA programs as well as the results from employee surveys conducted for Asia Society’s 2015 Asian Pacific Americans Corporate Survey, the only published initiative to exclusively measure the leadership success of APAs at Fortune 500-level companies. “As the head of a global organization, I can personally attest that diversity is transformative. an employer of choice for Asian professionals.“ KPMG was recognized as the Best Employer for APAs to Develop Workforce Skills, also for the third consecutive year. “KPMG prides itself on fostering a culture that is both diverse and inclusive, where all of our professionals can reach their full potential,” said Kathy Hopinkah Hannan, National Managing Partner of Diversity and Corporate Responsibility at KPMG. “The unique backgrounds and perspectives our Asian American professionals bring to their roles aid KPMG in providing the highest quality service to our clients. We are proud to once again be recognized by the Asia Society for the third year in a row as a top company for Asian Pacific American professionals.” Two award categories were introduced this year as an acknowledgement of the growing role of employee resource groups and formal sponsorship programs in advancing APA employees. Technical glitch delays US passports, visas Washington, United States (AFP) Saturday 6/13/2015 – The United States on Friday said it was experiencing difficulties issuing passports and visas from consular offices around the world because of technical problems. The problem affects all passport applications made overseas on or after May 26. Additionally, people who submitted online applications or were interviewed for

visas on or after June 9 were subject to delays, the US State Department said. “This issue is not specific to any particular country, citizenship document, or visa category,” a statement read. Officials said the issue was not related to another problem that affected its passport systems last summer. It did not say if the outage was related to a hack or malicious action.

as the Best Employer for APA Employee Resource Groups. “We’re so proud that the Asia Society has once again recognized AT&T’s commitment to diversity and inclusion – this time for our employee resource groups,” said Cynthia Marshall, AT&T Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer – Human Resources. “Three of our 12 ERGs are dedicated to employees of Asian heritage, and their efforts – through programs, events and leadership – have a profound impact on our employees and in our communities. Being recognized for their contribution is icing on the cake!”

New survey: Firms losing business opportunities by not engaging Asian, Pacific Islander workers Survey finds that despite improvements, companies should do more to engage APAs by involving employees in strategic decisions and offering more growth opportunities. NEW YORK, June 8, 2015 – Asia Society today issued the 2015 Asian Pacific Americans Corporate Survey at the Diversity Leadership Forum in New York. The study, now in its sixth year, surveys employees from Fortune 500-level companies across different industries to measure how APAs perceive their employers and to learn more about the Asian Pacific American (APA) workforce. “The world’s leading companies know the vital role the Asia Pacific consumer and workforce leaders will play in their future,” said Josette Sheeran, President and CEO of Asia Society. “Yet, there is a critical gap in knowledge about the growth, development and advancement of this group.” The survey findings indicate that compared to 2014, APAs see employers more favorably across every category. The greatest yearover-year improvement was in “APA Market Opportunity,” which tracks APA employee involvement in market strategy. 84% of APA employees responded favorably, a jump of 23% from 2014. Despite the improvement, findings across the survey reveal that APAs are still not fully brought into strategic conversations. While 99% of surveyed APA employees report they really care about the success of their companies, not all feel fully engaged. 86% of employees at top performing companies felt that their company encouraged the participation of APA employees in market/ business development activities. At other companies, only 65% of employees on average felt encouraged. The 21% gap between top performers and others represents lost business opportunities and lower employee retention rates. Lack of engagement of APA leaders also manifests itself in company board makeup. 34% of employees at top performing companies report inadequate APA representation on the company’s board of directors versus 57% at other companies. The area with largest room for improvement was “Professional Growth.” 24% of all APA employees declared themselves not favorable about their company in that category. In fact, professional growth is identified as one of the top engagement drivers among respondents. When asked what drives them to give their fullest at work, APA employees responded that their three biggest drivers are 1) work-life balance, 2) professional growth, and 3) diversity and employee resource groups (ERGs). One of the survey’s most surprising findings was the universal support for ERGs among APA employees, with 99% of respondents favorable towards these groups. Initially formed as supportive affinity groups for individuals sharing common interests, ERGs have since evolved into channels for company leadership to personally interact with, and identify, high potential APAs whom they might never have met otherwise. The findings indicate that employers should explore the use these groups as a way to further engage APA talent.

WASHINGTON, D.C. June 12, 2015 – “A Gala Evening Celebrating Philippine Design, Textile and Fashion” was a huge success, drawing a diverse crowd of US government officials, members of the Washington diplomatic corps, members of the Filipino-American community, and the general public, and shining light on the fabric and designs that make the Philippines unique. On the eve of Philippine Independence, piña (pineapple fabric) took center stage with the Grand Dame of Philippine Fashion, Ms. Patis Tesoro, making her Washington debut at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center on 11 June 2015 in commemoration of the 117th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence. Guests cheered as they viewed Ms. Tesoro’s collection of some 60 breathtaking pieces made from piña, considered the finest of all Philippine hand-woven fabrics. Ms. Tesoro was given a standing ovation at the end of the show. “Congratulations are in order! It was such a success! Patis Tesoro is definitely an icon of Philippine fashion design,” said Lucie Patton, Chair of Flower Mart 2015. “Kudos to you all for putting on such an elegant yet trendy and fun event! Quite a wonderful nod to the beautiful Philippine community,” said Lydia Benson. The Gala Event, which was

sponsored by the US-Philippines Society, is a testament to the beauty of Philippine fashion, which is continuously getting international attention. “Philippine fashion has earned world-class recognition, and the US-Philippines Society is pleased to sponsor this Gala as a way to share with you stunning examples of some truly innovative advances in design,” said Ambassador John Negroponte, Co-Chair of the Society. In his remarks, Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. pointed out that since piña production is an age-old tradition in the Philippines, the evening was a celebration of the uniqueness and beauty the country has to offer. “This Gala Evening is a fitting culmination of a month-long tribute to Philippine indigenous fabrics and the individuals who turn them into exquisite works of art. Piña has long been a symbol of elegance and sophistication, and in many ways is a celebration of the Filipino people’s innate creativity and dynamism in constantly changing times,” said Ambassador Cuisia. The envoy also dedicated the Gala Evening to the women behind the creation of one of the most exquisite, sought-after handmade fabrics in the world. Majority of the piña produced in the Philippines comes from the province of Aklan, with numerous families depending on the

piña industry for livelihood. In November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan devastated Aklan and seriously affected the piña production. The Gala Evening was a way for people in the US to help contribute to the preservation and enrichment of the piña industry in the Philippines, as proceeds of the event will benefit Aklan Piña MANTrA, a women-led fiber production microenterprise. “With your generous support, we aim to give the women of Aklan hope and help them rebuild their lives after Typhoon Haiyan disrupted their main source of livelihood. We dedicate the success of this Gala Evening to them,” the Ambassador stated. Guests at the Gala Evening were also treated to other designs uniquely Filipino. Also on display at the Ronald Reagan Building were signature pieces by multiawarded furniture designer and manufacturer Kenneth Cobonpue. Among the special guests that evening was Ms. Christine La-

garde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund. The Gala Evening was organized by the US-Philippines Society in cooperation with the Embassy. Other partners include the Philippine Department of Tourism, Karma Beauty Lounge by Erwin Gomez, All Nippon Airways, Megaworld, Philip Morris, The Filipino Channel, U.S. Education Finance Group and other sponsors. Through her work, Ms. Tesoro shares her knowledge of the elaborate piña production process with the belief that knowing how piña fiber is made will help bring the age-old craft to the modern times. As part of her Washington visit, Ms. Tesoro delivered a lecture entitled “The Piña Process” on 12 June at the George Washington University Textile Museum. Tesoro’s and Cobunpue’s pieces will be on exhibit and open to the public at The Gallery of the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center until July 15.

Herbert recalls struggling days with Maricel Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista is still shooting his comeback flick, “Lumayo Ka Nga Sa Akin, where he’s paired for the first time with Maricel Soriano in the episode that spoofs horror flicks, “Shake Shaker Shakest, but he already has a follow up. It’ll pair him with ex-GF Kris Aquino and also in the cast is Kris’ younger son, Bimby Aquino. Is it a co-production between him and Kris? “No, no, Star Cinema ang producer nito, he says. “Artista lang kami. We’re supposed to start shooting daw in July and hopefully, by that time, tapos ko na itong ‘Lumayo Ka Nga Sa Akin’ na pro-

duced naman by Viva Entertainment. We’ll play characters close to what we are in real life. I will be a public official and she will be a broadcast journalist naman. So how is it acting again? “I’m happy na bumalik ako sa pelikula dahil acting helps relieves you of the stresses of being a public servant. And it’s so nice to work with someone you grew up with. Bata pa lang kami, nagkatrabaho na kami ni Ate Maria in shows like ‘Kaluskos Musmos’, ‘Kuskos Balungos’ and ‘Two Plus Two’.

We’ve maintained naman our communication and friendship through the years. I’m really flattered when I was told by Boss Vic na si Ate Maria mismo ang nag-request na makasama ako sa pelikulang ito. (MNS)

Aiza Seguerra strips down songs of The Maestro MANILA, June 12 (Mabuhay) – Aiza Seguerra feels honored to salute Maestro Ryan Cayabyab musically with her album “Araw Gabi: Mga Awit Ni Maestro Ryan,â€? composed of the noted songwriter’s famous pieces, including “Araw Gabi,â€? “Tuwing Umuulan At Kapiling Ka,â€? “How Can I,â€? “Kailanâ€? and “Can This Be Love.â€? “It doesn’t matter kung bago or luma. Pinili namin ’yung mga songs na we felt (ay) very relatable. Iyon ang maganda sa mga songs ni Mr. C; kapag pinakinggan mo, hindi mo alam kung kailan ginawa, very timeless, classic,â€? Aiza told the press recently. Aiza thought of a concept that will give a new take on Ryan’s songs. She likes the melodies of Ryan’s compositions and the story each song tells. “Pwede mo i-acousticize ’yung songs but for me, I don’t like it like that. For me, everything has a purpose why you do it like that, why you strip down the song. I believe the songs are beautiful‌ musically (at) ang ganda ng mga sinasabi sa lyrics eh,â€? she said. Aiza lauds Mr. C’s grand, allout orchestral arrangements. In determining her approach to the album, she noted, “Before I started doing the album, I met up with him because I want to know kung ano ang kwento niya‌what inspired him to do these songs. Para pwede ko din i-envision iyon while making the album, para magawan namin ng tamang feel.â€? She cited the song “Mama,â€? which Ryan wrote for Smokey Mountain in the ’80s.

“It’s about a child na sinusulutan niya ’yung mama niya at bakit mo kailangang umalis, namimiss na kita, she said. “With ‘Kailan,’ very bata ’yung scenario, but the feel and sentiments is very universal, na nagkaroon ng unrequited love. So ’yung arrangement medyo pinatanda lang namin ng kaunti. We decided to put this song ‘Paano Na Kaya’ kasi marami tayong pinagdaanan na we love this friend but hindi natin pwedeng mahalin kasi baka maraming pwedeng masira, Aiza said. With Ryan’s great contributions in the local music industry, Aiza feels he should be named National Artist. “Para siyang BenCab, he’s an amazing artist. He knows his craft

ACTRESS Angel Locsin said she does not see herself as a politician even as her boyfriend, television host-actor Luis Manzano, is already contemplating seeking public office next year. Locsin said she prefers to help people in other ways. “Hindi ko kasi nakikita yung sarili ko sa pulitika. Pakiramdam ko, mas magpafunction ako na nagpa-follow kaysa sa pagiging leader, she said in an interview late last week. Locsin added that those who run for political office should have a good grasp of their job and responsibilities. Angel Locsin “Being a leader, mas iba yung power na kailangan mo talaga din. Kailangan napapasunod mo talaga yung mga tao. I think I’m more of a follower. At saka may pagka-pasaway po ako, she said. When asked to comment on the statement of Batangas Governor Vilma Santos, mother of Manzano, that she has the potential to become a good public servant, the actress said she’s flattered but maintained she wants to stay away from politics. “Galing siyempre kay Tita Vi ko, so, maraming maraming salamat. well. Nai-execute niya ’yung dapat niyang i-execute nang tama. But at the same time, he brings his art to the people. He inspires people, she said. Meanwhile, her marriage to Liza Dino has changed Aiza as singer and artist. While her mom used to be her number one critic who gave her generalized comments and overview of her work, Liza is now the one who gives honest opinions about her performances. Her “inpirasyon at kritiko, Aiza appreciates how Liza supports and keeps her grounded. “Liza is also an artist, a very good one. With Liza, she’s very specific, as in down to the last note. So, maganda kasi kung may ganu’n ka sa buhay mo, mas nafafine tune mo ang sarili mo. It can’t be all praises. There has to be someone that you trust na nagbibigay sa iyo, kasi you’re not pefect, so importante ’yung mga ganu’n na inputs. Like, ‘Okay ka sa parte na ito, dito medyo alangain, this part could be better.’ Importante iyon eh, she said. Aiza admitted that they sometimes have different views on music and her performances, which also sometimes affect her. However, she is thankful because having Liza as critic improves her as singer. She learned to open herself in order to achieve growth. “Feeling ko, I got better as a singer when I got together with Liza, when I married her. Kasi nabibigay niya sa akin ’yung much-needed constructive criticism, she said. (MNS)

MOTORING Can Mercedes revolutionize parking? June 11, 2015 (Relaxnews) – Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler is set to begin working in partnership with Bosch on the development of a new smartphone app-controlled system that would enable a car to drop off its driver and passengers then autonomously locate and maneuver into an available parking bay. The system, which will require cameras and sensors to be installed in car parks, will initially be integrated into car2go’s vehicle fleet. Car2go is Daimler’s carsharing service and one that relies heavily on smartphone apps and connectivity as a means of allowing customers to book and pay for car use – making it the perfect test environment. “Our customers are always the center of attention and all of our actions are oriented towards them. In future the car will even go to them,” explains Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board Daimler AG, responsible

for Group Research & MercedesBenz Cars Development. “In collaboration with our partner Bosch and our mobility service car2go we are developing and testing an infrastructure-based solution for a fully automated valet parking service. For us another step on our way to autonomous driving – or as in this case: towards autonomous parking.” Existing park assist, intelligent cruise control and autonomous breaking technologies available on a host of premium sedans, the Mercedes-Benz S Class included, are sufficient when working in unison for a car to be able to maneuver itself into a garage, a road-side space or into a parking bay on an outdoor car park without an accident. However, identifying an empty space within an indoor, multistorey car park, navigating to it and driving into it isn’t possible unless the parking structure itself is as connected as the cars

within it. This is where Bosch comes in. When the partnership is officially ratified on July 8, the company will be charged with developing the intelligent infrastructure components— parking bay sensors, cameras, etc – needed so that cars can see the layout of a car park as clearly as a human driver. ”Fully automated parking will be ready for mass-production before fully automated driving,” said Dr. Dirk Hoheisel, the responsible Board Member of Bosch. “Low driving speeds and the information from the car park infrastructure enable a fast implementation.” When the project is completed, a car2go customer will be able to summon a vehicle to the collection point and then send it away again when it’s no longer needed. BMW and Audi have both demonstrated similar technologies that require an infrastruc-

guage specific to the car, which is being described as a sports activity vehicle rather than a crossover or SUV. Audi’s head of Research and Development, Ulrich Hackenberg, has said that the Q6 would have a range of up to 500km on a single charge; in other words, equal to that of the Tesla Model S executive sedan. It will also be built on the same platform that other companies in the VW

group, including Porsche and Bentley, are already using to bring their latest crossovers and SUVs to market. This means that although Audi has given a tentative production model launch date of 2018, it could become a reality much sooner. And speed may well be of the essence as according to a report last week in German publication Wirschaftswoche, BMW is also planning to build an electric SUV which too could be launched before the end of 2018, depending on board room approval. The off-roader would become the third in BMW’s ‘i’ range of environmentally focused cars and would be built in the US at the same plant where its current range of SUVs are already produced.

Audi and BMW are ploƫng Tesla Model X rivals

Wednesday June 10 2015 (Relaxnews) – After years of delays, pioneering electric car company, Tesla is finally ready to officially launch its first battery-powered SUV. However, it could find that it won’t have the market to itself for very long as premium German automotive brands Audi and BMW are believed to be developing their own fully electric off-roaders in a bid to compete with the Model X, according to recent reports. With its upward opening ‘falcon wing’ rear doors, seating for seven and sharp lines, the Model X wowed the crowds when it was unveiled in concept form in 2012. So much so that within months of its unveiling, deposits started

flowing in for the production version which was initially expected to come to market in 2013. Unfortunately development issues, plus the challenge of making its existing Model S sedan a commercial as well as a critical success, meant that the launch date kept being pushed back. However, during the company’s annual shareholder meeting on Tuesday evening, Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk confirmed that the all-electric off roader would be with those initial deposit-paying customers before the end of the year. “We’re expecting to begin our first deliveries in three or four months. I’m looking at the latest iteration of the Model X every

week. The Model X may arguably be a better SUV than the Model S is a sedan,” he said. Musk also revealed that certain features, such as the car’s signature ‘falcon wing’ rear doors have made it onto the production model but have required particular attention to ensure they are “done just right.” Therefore, if there are no further holdups, the car will be hitting the streets as soon as September, which will be when Audi is expected to unveil its own take on the fully electric SUV. Although the company stresses that the car will be in concept form, the Q6 will be debuting at the Frankfurt motor show and with it a new ‘sporty’ design lan-

“Children and adolescents tend to perform brief bouts of exercise,” says Dr. Alan Barker of the University of Exeter in the UK. “This study shows that the intensity of this pattern of exercise is important, with high-intensity providing superior health benefits than moderate-intensity exercise.”

Getting fit in high-intensity baby steps benefits teens Friday June 12 2015 (Relaxnews) – Just two minutes of high-intensity exercise four times a day could improve teenagers’ health and fitness outlook, according to a new study that suggests the same amount of moderate-intensity exercise might not make much difference. “Children and adolescents tend to perform brief bouts of exercise,” says Dr. Alan Barker of the University of Exeter in the UK. “This study shows that the intensity of this pattern of exercise is important, with high-intensity providing superior health benefits than moderate-intensity exercise.” Dividing exercise into several abbreviated bursts over the course of a day—mimicking the activity rhythms of young children—is not a new concept in child and adolescent fitness. Testing this format, the study concluded that high-intensity

exercise is the only effective tool when it comes to improving blood sugar levels, fat metabolism and blood pressure for teens after they eat a fattening meal. The results have implications for cardiovascular disease, the process of which starts during adolescence. In the study, the research team monitored blood sugar, blood pressure and fat metabolism at eight-hour intervals of 19 teens who were allowed to eat fattening fare for breakfast and lunch. The teens completed three 24hour trials in a randomized order, in which they either rested or cycled at different intensities in sessions that were separated by two hours. When cycling, participants either performed high intensity interval training (HIIT) exercise or moderate-intensity exercise which was matched to the HIIT

exercises in terms of the effort it took. Data analysis of the blood monitoring showed the teens’ blood pressure and glucose levels were lower and their resting fat metabolism had quickened after performing the HIIT exercises when compared with the other two groups. Curiously, resting and performing moderate-intensity cycling made no difference in blood pressure, glucose or resting fat metabolism, according to the study. The study was published in the journal Metabolism: Clinical and Experimental. A team from the University of Exeter that also included Dr. Barker concluded in March that just one short burst of high-intensity exercise before a fatty meal could improve teens’ vascular health.

New treatment promotes weight loss, prevents bone loss Sunday June 14 2015 (Relaxnews) – A little-known fact about major weight loss is that bone mass often goes with it, but scientists claim to have discovered a way to circumvent this using the body’s hormones. The hormone GLP-1 that’s found in the intestine, could not only prevent your bones from becoming fragile and fractureprone due to rapid or major weight loss, but could also help keep blood sugar levels steady, according to the study. Already used to treat type 2 diabetes, liraglutide is an example of a GLP-1 analogue hormone. Previous research has found evidence that liraglutide and others like it do not increase bone fractures when used to treat type 2 diabetes whereas bone density loss is often a negative side effect of other solutions. “Liraglutide has just been approved for obesity treatment because of its appetite-inhibiting effects, but its effect on the bones of overweight patients who are not suffering from type 2 diabetes has so far been unknown,” says Dr. Eva Winning Jepsen from the University of Copenhagen. In the study, the researchers observed 37 female participants who had lost up to 12 kg by eat-

ing a low-calorie diet—half of the participants had been treated with the GLP-1 analogue liraglutide and a control group who hadn’t. Over the course of one year, the research team helped the women to maintain their weight loss, giving them frequent dietary advice. If they gained weight, they were asked to substitute up to two meals with a low-calorie powder. When the year was over, all participants had maintained their weight loss, but the control group had done so by replacing one meal per day with low-calorie fare. “The liraglutide group did not have to do this as they kept their weight loss due to inhibition of appetite,” study author

Signe Sorenson Torekov of the University of Copenhagen told Relaxnews. The group treated with liraglide had not lost any bone mass and samples of their blood showed increased levels of bone formation markers—the products of bone cells, expressed as bones gain density. On the flipside, the control group had lost bone mass, according to the study, which was published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. “Menopausal women have an increased risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures,” says Torekov. “If they try to lose weight and thus lose even more bone mass, they are at an even higher risk. The study shows that overweight women can now lose weight with liraglutide without increasing the risk of losing bone mass.” The study bears significant implications for treating obesity with GLP-1 analogues, especially for women.
