Aquino signs ‘strict’ gun measure MANILA, June 02, 2013 (AFP) – Philippine President Benigno Aquino has signed a law making it harder for private individuals to own firearms following a series of high-profile deaths this year, a government spokeswoman said Sunday. Under the law signed last week, those seeking to buy firearms will have to undergo drug and psychological tests and should not have a criminal record or pending court cases. They will also have to show proof of income as well as a valid tax return and secure clearance

from their respective city or municipal police offices. “The new law, coupled with strict enforcement and a more aggressive campaign against loose firearms, will help prevent untoward incidents involving firearms,” deputy presidential spokeswoman Abigail Valte said. Qualified citizens will only be allowed to own small firearms, and those who fail to renew their gun licence every two years will have their weapons confiscated by police. Valte said the government was also stepping up its drive

against illegal guns, with police going from door to door to check on potential sources of unlicensed weapons. Gun ownership is a sensitive issue in the Philippines, where many own or carry firearms to protect themselves amid rampant criminality. It was not clear how the law will help address the proliferation of unlicensed firearms or the thriving black market trade of these weapons. The issue took centre stage in January, following a spate of See GUN MEASURE, page 6

DOTC seals agreement for state-of-the-art aviation safety systems by 2015 An agreement paving the way for a world-class aviation system in the Philippines has been closed by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC), ensuring the availability of CNS/ATM (Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management) Systems within two-and-a-half years. Under a Contract Amendment signed last week between the DOTC and the Sumitomo-Thales Joint Venture, the latter will immediately restart the construction of an air traffic management building and the supply of various com-

ponents such as automation equipment and terminal radars, to enable the use of the satellite technology-based system. The original contract between the parties was signed in December 2010, but was disallowed by the Commission on Audit (COA) in May 2011. After a review of its concerns, however, the COA lifted the disallowance in March 2013. The DOTC and the Joint Venture then worked on the Contract Amendment in order to update the project timeline, scope of works, and prices, to allow the project to proceed. See DOTC SEALS, page 6

MANILA, June 3 (Mabuhay) – President Benigno S. Aquino III directed the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and other concerned government agencies looking into the Two Serendra Condominium’s blast in Global City, Taguig on Friday night to come out with definitive findings that will stand scrutiny. In an interview after attending the Government-Owned and – Controlled Corporations (GOCCs) Dividends Day held at the Rizal Hall of Malacañang Palace on Monday, the Chief Executive told the NBI, Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Science and Technology, and other concerned government agencies and law enforcement entities that he wants a thorough and scientific investigation into the incident. Aquino confirms offering Cabinet posts to Lacson, Pangilinan MANILA, June 3 (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III on Monday confirmed that he has already offered Cabinet posts to Senators Panfilo Lacson and Francis Pangilinan, who are set to end their terms as lawmakers this month. Aquino, however, was tight-lipped on the details of his offer to the two outgoing senators, saying he wants the “specifics” to be finalized first.

“Alam mo sabi nga nila, ‘yung details dapat ay hinog na hinog... Nagkasundo kami in general, pero wala pa doon sa specifics. Para maliwanag lang ang ating terms of engagement,” the President told reporters after an event in Malacanang Palace on Monday morning. He likewise said that none of his plans for Lacson and Pangilinan are set in stone as of the moment.

Lacson once served as head of the now-defunct Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force from 1998 to 2001 during the administration of former President Joseph Estrada. He also served as chief of the National Police from November 1999 to January 2001. Pangilinan, meanwhile, has not yet been part of the executive branch, being a Quezon City councilor for four years before his 12-year Senate stint.

Cebu Pacific overshoots runway, forces Davao airport closure MANILA, June 03, 2013 (AFP) – Philippine aviation authorities shut down one of the country’s busiest airports on Monday after a passenger jet overshot the runway when landing during a rainstorm, officials said. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said Davao International Airport in the south of the country would be closed until Monday evening while authorities removed the

Cebu Pacific Airbus A320 plane. The jet, with 165 people aboard, “veered off to the right of the runway” shortly after landing on Sunday night from Manila, the company said. “All the passengers were safe,” airline spokeswoman Candice Iyog told AFP. “We do not know exactly what caused the airplane to swerve, but we are cooperating with the accident investigators.” See DAVAO AIRPORT, page 6

TAIPEI, June 01, 2013 (AFP) – Taiwan investigators have identified the gun used in the fatal shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman by Philippine coastguards, an official said Saturday, amid conflicting media reports on whether the shooter had confessed. Taipei and Manila swapped teams of investigators on Monday following weeks of acrimony in a bid to settle controversy over the incident that has severely strained ties between the two sides. US probers submit report on Tubbataha MANILA, June 3 (Mabuhay) – A US fact-finding mission has submitted its findings on the grounding of the USS Guardian at the Tubbataha Reef last January 17. President Aquino said the report was given to him last week and it will take some time to go through the 1-inch thick document. “I have to go through it. It’s, again, about an inch thick – full of nautical charts, among other things,” Aquino said. The US minesweeper was removed from the World Heritage site after more than 2 months.

Four USS Guardian officers were also relieved because of the incident. The Tubbataha Management Office has assessed a $1.4 million fine or about P60 million to the US Navy for the damage caused to the protected reef. Meantime, Aquino is also waiting for the report of the National Bureau of Investigation into the killing of a Taiwanese fisherman near Batanes. The President said he expects the results of the NBI’s parallel probe into the shooting incident anytime this week. (MNS)

Student ‘exodus’ from private schools alarms teachers

MANILA, June 3 (Mabuhay) – The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition on Monday said more students are transferring from private schools to public schools due to higher tuition in private educational institutions. TDC secretary-general Emmalyn Policarpoo said some schools now have a student-teacher ratio of 1:50 because of the large influx of elementary students in public schools. She said a government program encouraging public school students to transfer to private schools is not working because of the exodus of students from private schools. “The purpose of the Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education (GASTPE) is not being served

because more students from private schools are transferring to public schools,” she said. For his part, National Union of Students of the Philippines president Victor Villanueva again urged the Supreme Court to act on the group’s petition to stop tuition hikes in private colleges and universities this school year. “Education is not a private commodity that can be [sold]. It is not an ordinary business where schools can earn humongous profits. It is not a burger or a clothing apparel which is sold in the market,” he said. “It is a social service. It is like a public utility like health or transportation. It is a basic necessity for the people. It has to be regulated,” he added. (MNS)

130,000 jobs available in PHL as school starts this June MANILA, June 1 (Mabuhay) -Good news for parents who need steady income to put their children through school: more than 130,000 jobs are up for grabs in the Philippines this June, the Department of Labor and Employment said Thursday. DOLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said prospective jobseekers can find out more about the vacancies by accessing the PhilJobnet online job matching system. “This is good news especially for parents who have children to support and to the new graduates who now have their turn in supporting their siblings’ education,” Baldoz said in a news release. “There are a number of vacant jobs in the country which remains unfilled for a period of time because recruiters are having a hard time getting applicants with the set of skills and competencies that matches the requirements of the job,” she added.

However, Baldoz also reminded job applicants to create their accounts at the Phil-Job.net website for an easier online job application. This will help them save time, money and effort in looking for jobs, she said. Presently, Baldoz said there are 130,290 vacancies as of May 29, with the top 20 jobs as: Salesman, 11,971 vacancies Call center agent, 8,888 Service crew, 8,757 Technical support staff, 6,458 Production workers/factory worker, 5,180 Sales clerk, 5,003 Cashier, 4,708 Production machine operator, 2,823 Customer service assistant, 2,718 Office clerk, 1,969 Janitor, 1,863 Merchandiser, 1,718 Security guard, 1,418 Production technician, 1,369 Sales officer, 1,300 Head waiter, 1,234

Promo girl, 1,228 Janitress, 1,216 Promo salesperson, 1,146. Baldoz advised jobseekers who want to upgrade their skills and qualifications to take a technicalvocational course related to their craft from the Technical Education and Skills Development Administration’s (TESDA). She said TESDA has a network of 4,500 technical education and skills development (TESD) providers nationwide. TESDA offers training for skills required by the sectors of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning, electronics, agriculture and fishery, processed food and beverages, tourism, health and other community development services, information and communications technology, maritime, garments, footwear and leather goods, furniture and fixtures, and utilities, DOLE said. A trainee who completes the course will get a National Certificate (NC) or Certificate of Competency (COC). (MNS)

Expert warns of new activity at deadly Mayon volcano LEGASPI, Philippines, June 01, 2013 (AFP) – A Philippine volcano that killed five people last month in a huge ash explosion is showing renewed signs of activity, a government volcanologist warned Saturday. The picturesque Mayon volcano is bulging near its edifice, emitting more gas, and has a noticeable glow at its cone, resident volcanologist Ed Laguerta said. “Activity has slightly increased and if there is a further escalation, it would mean raising the alert level around the volcano,” he said. Mayon, one of the Philippines’

most active volcanoes, spewed a giant ash cloud and hail of rocks on May 7, killing four foreign climbers and their Filipino guide. While the volcano, located about 330 kilometers (200 miles) southeast of Manila, does not show signs of an imminent eruption, it could experience another ash explosion or even volcanic quakes that could endanger climbers. “Even if there is no explosion, there may be rockfalls, rockslides from the quakes,” Laguerta said. Since the deaths last month, the local government has im-

posed climbing restrictions, but these rules are difficult to enforce, said Laguerta. The 2,460-metre (8,070-foot) Mayon is famed for its near-perfect cone but has a long history of deadly eruptions. In 1814, more than 1,200 people were killed when lava flows buried the town of Cagsawa. The volcano erupted in August 2006. There were no direct deaths caused by the explosion, but the following December a passing typhoon unleashed an avalanche of volcanic mud from its slopes that killed 1,000 people.

Aquino signs new law amending earlier law regulating the cutting of coconut trees MANILA, June 3 (Mabuhay) -- President Benigno S. Aquino III signed into law a Bill amending an earlier Republic Act regulating the cutting of coconut trees, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte announced on Sunday. Speaking at a press briefing aired over government-run radio station dzRB Radyo ng Bayan, Valte said President Aquino signed last May 29 Republic Act 10593 “amending certain provisions of Republic Act 8048 or an Act Providing for the Regulation of the Cutting of Coconut Trees, Its Replenishment, and Providing Penalties Therefore.” Valte pointed out that the salient points of the new law not only prohibits but also allows for certain exemptions for the cutting down of coconut trees. “Una po diyan, when a tree is 60 years old in the case of tall varieties and at least 40 years in

dwarf varities; kapag hindi na daw po economically productive ‘yung puno; kapag ang puno po ay severely disease-infested and beyond rehabilitation; when the tree is severely damaged by typhoon or lightning; when the agricultural land devoted to coconut production shall have been converted in accordance with law into either a residential, commercial or an industrial area; at kapag na-devote na daw po ang land to coconut production at na-convert na po ito sa iba pang gamit na pangagrikultura, provided na humingi ang may-ari ng pahintulot para sa conversion,” Valte said. She added that exemptions to cutting down coconut trees apply “if the tree would cause hazard to life and property.” “So nakalagay din po dito ang mga corresponding penalties kapag nagkaroon ng paglabag doon sa mga pagbabawal na ito,” Valte said. Steps in place vs new SARS virus strain, Palace reassures public MANILA, June 1 (Mabuhay) – Malacañang on Saturday reassured the public steps have been taken to make sure a new strain of the virus causing Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) will not enter and affect the Philippines. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte also said there is no need for Philippine health authorities to go on heightened alert

due to the potential threat, at least for now. “Essentially we want to assure the public the Department of Health is already aware of this situation and it is closely working with the World Health Organization on any update or progress in the situation,” she said on government-run dzRB radio. For now, Valte said airport personnel are operating scanners that

will check for signs of infection among passengers arriving from abroad. But she said, “At this point walang need (for) heightened alert other than the normal procedures we conduct sa lahat na dumadaan sa ating paliparan.” Earlier, this week, WHO Director General Margaret Chan, in her closing remarks at the 66th World Health Assembly, voiced concern over the respiratory virus. She urged the internation-

al community to take action against it soonest. “Looking at the overall world health situation, my greatest concern right now is the novel coronavirus. We understand too little about this virus when viewed against the magnitude of its potential threat. Any new disease that is emerging faster than our understanding is never under control,” she said. She also said that as of now, it is not established how the virus hides in nature, or how people

are getting infected. Until then, she said, “we are empty-handed when it comes to prevention,” adding these are “alarm bells,” and that “we must respond.” “The novel coronavirus is not a problem that any single affected country can keep to itself or manage all by itself. The novel coronavirus is a threat to the entire world. As the Chair of committee A succinctly stated: this virus is something that can kill us,” she said. (MNS)

Aquino leads GOCCs’ dividends day in Malacañang MANILA, June 3 (Mabuhay) – President Benigno S. Aquino III said on Monday that the Government-Owned and-Controlled Corporations (GOCCs) remitted a total of P77-billion to the national coffers for the past three years, compared to P96billion collected by the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in her nine years of presidency. In his speech at the ceremonial turnover of GOCCs check dividends and other forms of remittances during the GOCC Dividends Day at the Rizal Hall of Malacañang on Monday, the Chief Executive said the P77billion remitted by the GOCCs was a result of government’s continuing reforms to fight corruption. “Sa loob lamang ng tatlong taon, nakapaghatid na ang ating mga GOCC ng kabuuang mahigit 77 billion pesos. Ikumpara po natin iyan sa buong siyam at kalahating taon ng kanilang panunungkulan, kung saan nasa 96 billion pesos lamang ang nalikom nilang remittance mula sa mga korporasyon. Ididiin ko lang po: Tayo, 77 billion sa tatlong taon; sila, 96 billion sa siyam at kalahating taon,” President Aquino said. The President lauded the GOCCs for doing their best to perform effectively and efficiently to contribute to national development. “Kaya naman, saludo at nagpapasalamat po ako sa bumubuo sa

bawat korporasyong nagpakitanggilas ngayong taon, at nagpamalas ng kanilang makabuluhang kontribusyon sa bansa,” he said. He also cited the contributions of the Governance Commission for GOCCs led by Chairman Cesar L. Villanueva for initiating various reforms and initiatives to improve the collections of dividends and other contributions from the GOCCs. The President noted that the funds that came from the GOCCs are currently being used for the government’s various social programs such as providing education, healthcare, food and livelihood for the Filipinos, especially the vulnerable sector. “Lumiliwanag na rin ang kinabukasan ng marami nating kababayan, ngayong naisakatuparan na ng National Electrification Administration ang malawakang elektripikasyon para pailawan ang ilang mga sitio at barangay sa bansa,” he noted. “Sa huli, ang bawat tagumpay sa mabuting pamamahala ng ating mga GOCC ay may malaking ambag sa tagumpay ng karaniwang Pilipino, at ng buong bansa,” he stressed. The Aquino administration is promoting financial viability and fiscal discipline in GOCCs to make them more efficient in the discharge of their duties and functions, the President said. He, likewise, called on the GOCCs to work harder to further increase their dividends and remittances.

President Benigno S. Aquino receives from Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation chairman & chief executive officer Cristino Naguiat, Jr., and president & chief operating officer Jorge Sarmiento the dividend check amounting to Php1.4-billion to be remitted to the National Treasury during the 2013 Government-Owned and Controlled Corporations (GOCC) Dividends Day at the Rizal Hall of the Malacañan Palace on Monday (June 03). A total of 38 agencies remitted close to Php28-billion to the National Treasury, surpassing the collections made last year, with eight GOCCs belonging to the elite circle, the so-called “Billionaire’s Club”, for having remitted at least Php1-billion to the government. (MNS photo)

“Hindi naman po tayo hihinto: Sa tuwid na daan, patuloy nating patitibayin ang ating mga pampublikong istitusyon kung saan nananatiling

pundasyon ang mabuti, makatuwiran, at may pananagutang pamamahala. Tapos na ang panahon kung

saan itinuturing na alkansya ng mga nasa poder at ng ilang korporasyon ang kaban ng bayan,” he said. (MNS)

State-run firms turn over P27 billion to national coffers MANILA, June 3 (Mabuhay) -- Over P27 billion in last year’s earnings have been turned over by government-owned and -controlled corporations (GOCCs) to the national coffers to help fund the administration’s programs. The amount, which surpassed 2011 remittances by P8.8 billion, was received by President Benigno Aquino III from heads of 38 state-run firms in turnover ceremonies inside the Malacañang on Monday morning. In his speech during the event, Aquino said the increased earnings of the GOCCs

were the result of his administration’s anticorruption campaign. “Wala pa po tayo sa kalagitnaan ng ating termino, patuloy po natin silang nailalayo sa marungis na pangalan... Iyan po ang tuwid na daan,” Aquino said, echoing his administration’s slogan. He also criticized the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for allegedly allowing GOCCs to be marred by various anomalies. Land Bank For the third straight year, the Land Bank of the Philippines remitted the big-

gest amount among all GOCCs, turning over P6.2 billion to the national government. Aside from the Land Bank, seven other state-run firms were able to remit over P1 billion in earnings to the national government. These state-run firms in the so-called “billionaire’s circle” are the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. (PSALM), the Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA), the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP), the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR), the Philippine Ports Authority, the

Philippine Reclamation Authority, and the Manila International Airport Authority. Present during the turnover ceremonies were Senator Franklin Drilon, author of the GOCC Law; Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima; Budget Secretary Florencio Abad; and Transportation and Communications Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya. Under the GOCC Governance Act (Republic Act 10149), GOCCs are required to “declare and remit at least... 50 percent of their annual net earnings as cash, stock or property dividends to the national government.” (MNS)

4 Visit www.usasianpost.com US reaffirms defense treaty with PHL

SINGAPORE, Singapore, June 01, 2013 (AFP) – The United States on Saturday reaffirmed its commitment to a defence treaty with the Philippines, which is currently embroiled in a territorial dispute with Beijing over the South China Sea. The pledge came as US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel met his Philippine counterpart Voltaire Gazmin on the sidelines of an annual security forum in Singapore set to be dominated by Beijing’s growing might. The Philippines, a former US colony, is involved not only in a row with China but also Taiwan over the recent killing of a Taiwanese fisherman along their sea border. “Secretary Hagel emphasized the importance of the Philippines as a treaty ally and reaffirmed the United States commitment to the Mutual Defense Treaty,” Pentagon spokesman George Little told journalists after the meeting. “Secretary Hagel stressed the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in the region,” he added. Both defence chiefs “also discussed deepening bilateral defense cooperation including work towards increasing rotational presence of US forces in (the) Philippines to address common challenges”, Little said. The Philippines and the United States, whose soldiers fought side by side in the Pacific theatre during World War II, are bound to help defend each other in case of external attacks under a mutual defense treaty signed in 1951. The Philippines has one of Asia’s most poorly equipped armed forces and has been protesting Chinese efforts to enforce Beijing’s claims to the entire South China Sea, including waters and islands near the Philippine coast. The Philippines along with Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam as well as China and Taiwan have laid full or partial claim to the South China Sea, which is believed to sit atop vast deposits of natural gas and hosts vital shipping lanes. Taiwan threatened the Philippines with sanctions and held naval exercises near their sea border after a Taiwanese fisherman was killed when the Filipino coastguard fired on their vessel on May 9.

Chinese patrols in Asian seas ‘legitimate’: PLA general BY MARTIN ABBUGAO

SINGAPORE, June 02, 2013 (AFP) - Chinese warships will continue to patrol waters where Beijing has territorial claims, a top general said Sunday, amid simmering rows with neighboring countries over the South China Sea and islands controlled by Japan. Lieutenant General Qi Jianguo, deputy chief of the general staff of the People’s Liberation Army, defended the patrols as legitimate and said his country’s sovereignty over the areas could not be disputed. “Why are Chinese warships patrolling in East China Sea and South China Sea? I think we are all clear about this,” Qi told the annual Shangri-La Dialogue security conference in Singapore. “Our attitude on East China Sea and South China Sea is that they are in our Chinese sovereignty. We are very clear about that,” he said through an interpreter. “So the Chinese warships and the patrolling activities are totally legitimate and uncontroversial.” Qi was responding to a question from a delegate after giving a speech in which he sought to assure neighboring countries that China has no hegemonic ambitions. “China has never taken foreign expansion and military conquering as a state policy,” he said. One delegate however said there appeared to be growing regional skepticism over China’s peaceful intentions because it was inconsistent with moves to send naval patrols to waters where other countries also have claims. China is locked in a territorial dispute with Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam in the South China Sea. The four states have partial claims to islands but China says it has sovereign rights to nearly all of the sea, including areas much closer to other countries and thousands of kilometres from the Chinese coast. China also has a dispute with Japan over the Senkaku islands, which Beijing calls the Diaoyus, in the East China Sea. “I do hope the statements of the good general today will be translated into action,” Philippine Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin told reporters. He said Qi’s remarks about China having no hegemonic ambitions were “far from what is happening” in the sea. Manila last month protested at what it called the “provocative and illegal presence” of a Chinese warship near Second Thomas Shoal, which is occupied by Philippine troops. Among the other moves that have caused alarm were China’s occupation of a shoal near the Philippines’ main island last year, and the deployment in March of Chinese naval ships to within 80 kilometers (50 miles) of Malaysia’s coast. Competing claims have for decades made the area – home to rich fishing grounds and vital global shipping lanes and believed to sit atop vast natural gas deposits – one of Asia’s potential military flashpoints. China and Vietnam fought in 1974 and 1988 for control of islands in battles that left dozens of soldiers dead. The US-China strategic rivalry also loomed large during the conference, with US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Saturday accusing Beijing of waging cyber espionage against the United States. But General Qi on Sunday allayed concerns that China had dropped a pledge not to be the first to use nuclear weapons in a conflict. Omission of the “no-first-use” pledge in a recent defence white paper had created ripples in military circles and sparked speculation that China may have abandoned the policy. Qi also distanced his government from claims by some Chinese scholars that the Ryukyu Islands, which include Okinawa, do not belong to Japan. “This is only an article of particular scholars and their views on these issues... it does not represent the views of the Chinese government,” he said. Maritime disputes and the risks of conflicts that could hurt Asia’s economic growth were a running theme during the three-day conference that ended Sunday. “Asia holds great promise for ourselves and the world but continued peace and prosperity in this region are neither fait accompli nor automatic,” Singapore Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen told the conference. “Instead, if we are to continue to enjoy stability and progress, we must work effectively in unison to strengthen areas of common interests.”

Asia warned against destabilizing arms race BY BHAVAN JAIPRAGAS

SINGAPORE, Singapore, June 01, 2013 (AFP) – Asian countries must guard against destabilizing the region with increased arms spending, defence chiefs warned at an international security conference Saturday. Asian governments, boosted by stronger economic growth and worried by regional tensions, have been beefing up their armed forces and there are fears the build-ups could be dangerous in the long run if not managed well. “There are indeed inherent perceptional sensitivities in military build-ups that could create miscalculations, misjudgements, and mistrust,” Indonesian Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro told the Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual forum in Sinapore. “In order to avoid military modernization becoming destabilizing, there is a need for greater strategic transparency.” Asia overtook European members of NATO in terms of nominal military spending for the first time last year, according to a report by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) released in March. In the annual report on the world’s militaries, the IISS – which organizes the Shangri-La Dialogue – said China’s defence spending in real terms rose 8.3 percent between 2011 and 2012, while in Asia as a whole, spending rose 4.94 percent last year. Globally, China now ranks second behind the United States in total military spending, although the Pentagon’s annual budget of $600 billion still dwarfs Beijing’s arms expenditure. Philip Hammond, Britain’s secretary of state for defense, said rising defense spending in Asia was “worrying” as it was taking place against the backdrop of growing tensions

over territorial disputes and competition for resources. “(It) has the potential to escalate and become at best a prolonged source for instability and at worst, a driver for conflict,” he said. On May 9, a Philippine coast guard ship fired on a Taiwanese fishing vessel along their sea border, killing a fisherman. Taipei reacted angrily and held naval exercises near the Philippines in a show of force against its bigger but poorly equipped neighbor. China is locked in a territorial dispute with four Southeast Asian countries in the South China Sea, and with Japan over the Senkaku islands, which Beijing calls the Diaoyus, in the East China Sea. And on the Korean Peninsula, tensions remain high between US-backed South Korea and the nuclear-armed North. Latest statistics released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute showed China’s estimated defense spending nearly quadrupled from $37 billion in 2000 to $166 billion in 2012. India’s defense spending has grown 67 percent since 2000, reaching $46.1 billion in 2012, it said. South Korea’s defense investments swelled from $20 to $31.6 billion while Japan maintained its defense budget throughout the period at $60 billion. But Tokyo in January announced that it would increase military spending this year for the first time in over a decade by over $1.15 billion under a ruling party plan. Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera, who also spoke at the Singapore defense conference, justified the country’s increased spending. “We believe it is essential to build-up a defense posture that will contribute to the enhancement of regional peace and stability,” he said.

Japan disowns outspoken mayor’s comfort women remarks SINGAPORE, June 01, 2013 (AFP) - Japan’s defence minister on Saturday disowned remarks by an outspoken Japanese mayor who said “comfort women” forced to provide sex during World War II were a military necessity. The administration of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe “never commits to such remarks or recognition of history”, Itsunori Onodera told an Asian security conference attended by nations invaded by Japan during that war. Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto prompted outrage at home and abroad by suggesting in May that battle-stressed soldiers during World War II needed the services of up to 200,000 sex slaves from Korea, China, the Philippines and elsewhere.

“In the past, Japan caused tremendous damage and suffering to the people of many countries, particularly to those of Asian nations,” Onodera told the security forum in Singapore known as the ShangriLa Dialogue. “Consecutive Japanese governments have humbly acknowledged such historical facts, expressed deep remorse and genuine apologies,” the minister added. The Osaka mayor has cancelled a trip to the United States after US officials denounced his remarks as “outrageous and offensive”. He also retracted advice he gave to US military commanders in Japan that they should let their troops use licensed sex businesses as part of what he called a crime reduction strategy.

India now biggest source of migrants to Australia SYDNEY, June 03, 2013 (AFP) – India has become the leading source of permanent migrants to Australia for the first time, ahead of China, a government report showed Monday. Reflecting the growing prominence of Asia to Australia, seven of the top 10 source countries during 2011-2012 were from the region, Australia’s Migration Trends study showed. “Between 1996 and 2011, Australia’s overseas-born population grew by more than 40 percent to reach six million,” said Immigration Minister Brendan O’Connor. “This was more than double the rate for the Australianborn population and is essential in addressing the demographic challenges of an ageing population. “With the government’s strong emphasis on skilled mi-

gration, this sort of growth is also crucial to ensuring depth in Australia’s labour force.” The number of permanent migrants from India was 29,018 in 2011/12, up 12.7 percent on the previous year. China was number two as visa places fell from 29,546 to 25,509. During the same time British arrivals rose to 25,273 from 23,931 with the Philippines and South Africa four and five respectively. The report showed that during the past 15 years the number of Indian-born Australian residents increased four-fold while Chinese-born residents tripled. However, Britain remained the main birthplace of migrants, with 1.18 million calling Down Under home from a total population of 23 million.

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur, June 3 (Mabuhay) – Brig. Gen. Daniel Lucero, commander of the Army’s 1st Infantry “Tabak” Division, died on Sunday after his diving gear malfunctioned off the coast of Tukuran municipality, this province, his grieving wife Maria Consuelo said on Monday. Lucero was a decorated Philippine Army officer and a combat veteran here in Mindanao. Lucero “suddenly collapsed” around 1:55 p.m. Sunday “while nearing the water surface from a depth of less than 40 feet,” according to Army’s 1st Infantry Division spokesman Capt. Jefferson Somera. Scuba divers who were with Lucero immediately applied first aid and rushed him to the Mendero Hospital in this city for medical treatment, Somera said. However, Somera said the attending physician declared Lucero dead at 3:15 p.m. for cardiac pulmonary arrest. Lucero’s wife, who wants an autopsy to be conducted, said his husband died after his diving gear

malfunctioned. The incident happened while the command was having a reception and Commander’s time for the 21 Second Lieutenants who were newly assigned to the First Infantry “Tabak” Division at “Tabak Beach” in the municipality of Tukuran. In line with the activity, Lucero invited officers of the “Tabak” Division who were certified scuba divers as well as civilian friends and this city’s members of Life Time Dive Center (LTDC), who assisted them during the event. Lucero’s wife and daughter, Paula Divina, also joined them during the occasion. “Brig. Gen. Lucero’s death is a great loss in the Philippine Army and in the Armed Forces of the Philippines in general,” Brig. Gen. Felicito Virgilio Trinidad, 1st Infantry Division General Officer-inCommand said. Lucero, 54, earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the Philippine Military Academy and is a member of the “Matikas” Class of 1983.

However Father Joel Tabora, president of the Jesuit-run Ateneo de Davao University, charged that Cebu Pacific had endangered its passengers, including Ateneo faculty and students, during the emergency because of alleged incompetence. “The Cebu Pacific personnel failed to give humane assistance to passengers,” Tabora said in a statement. “No instructions were given, no calming words were spoken.” In a notice to airlines, the civil aviation office said the airport would be closed until

Monday evening, when ground crew would likely be able to pull the jet from the runway. “The nose wheel of the aircraft collapsed, but its two landing gears appear to be in order with its left engine visibly damaged,” it said. It added that four of the passengers on board had been infants. Cebu Pacific’s Iyog said the airline had cancelled 20 flights for the day, while rival Philippine Airlines (PAL) had cancelled 11.

DEAD FISHERMAN From page 1

A team of Taiwanese investigators have concluded that two guns were used to shoot at the fishing boat, including a M14 rifle suspected of firing the fatal shot, said Taiwan’s state-funded Central News Agency citing unnamed officials. The report also said the shooter, who was not named, has been identified and that he had confessed to opening fire. However Taiwan’s Apple Daily said no Filipino coastguard had admitted to using the M14 rifle. Eight Filipino coastguard members ad-

mitted to opening fire but said they shot at the sky or into the sea rather than the fishing boat, reported the newspaper. A Taiwanese prosecutor in charge of the case told AFP the gun used to fire at the fisherman has been identified but declined to comment on the suspected shooter. The team from Taiwan, which returned from Manila on Friday, was allowed to examine the Filipino coastguard vessel and interview the coastguards involved in the May 9 encounter, as well as being granted access to the firearms.

pressed readiness for the law’s implementation. The law will take effect 15 days after its publication. MMDA General Manager Corazon Jimenez said the agency has started coordinating with the Land Transportation Office on how to conduct sobriety tests on drivers suspected of drunk driving. “With proper coordination, hopefully we will be able to improve the campaign against drunk driving,” she said. Jimenez said the MMDA has six breathe analyzers that could be used to test if the drivers were under driving under the influence of liquor or illegal drugs. Jimenez expressed belief that with the implementation of the law, drunk driving-

related road accidents would be decreased. “With the introduction of this law, we believe that it can help reduce the number of accidents involving drunk drivers,” Jimenez added. She also lauded the stiff penalty being imposed under the law wherein violators will be fined as much as P500,000 with as a corresponding jail term. With the stiff penalty, Jimenez said this will help curb the number of drunk driving related incidents. Based on MMDA’s data, at least 398 accidents caused by drunk drivers were recorded from 2005 to 2012. In the said figures, 20 were reported fatal, 203 were severely injured while 175 caused damage to property. (MNS)

MOTORING Is the electric car about to go mainstream? (Relaxnews) – Changing perceptions, creating desire and building a loyal following. Tesla could be on the verge of doing for battery-powered motoring what Apple did for computers When asked his thoughts on the next big thing in tech at this week’s D11 conference, Chris Anderson, erstwhile editor of Wired, current curator of TED conferences and one of the world’s most

respected authorities on future technology, said: “The electric car. I think [Tesla CEO] Elon Musk is absolutely kicking ass. Plug-in electric cars are still in their infancy and particularly in large countries such as the US, with literally hundreds of miles separating metropolitan areas, their appeal is limited, due in part to the limited range that current battery tech-

nology offers. Compounding that issue is the lack of recharging infrastructure and the fact that many plug-in vehicles still require overnight charging in order to top up the batteries sufficiently to continue on their journey. However, with Tesla, Anderson believes that the tide is turning and that the company is helping to alter consumers’ perception of electric cars for the better:

“I think people who drive Teslas are getting religious in the same way that people got religious when they first used Macs, or experienced multi-touch. It’s going to change everything. He’s [Elon Musk] going to seduce us into an energy sustainable future. Tesla’s latest car, the Model S, is the closest in terms of quality, performance and features that electric cars have come to competing with their petrol-powered counterparts, even in terms of range. The Model S can travel over 300 miles on a single charge and the company’s supporting ‘Supercharging’ stations mean that topping up the battery again doesn’t mean finding a bed for the night. They can boost a vehicle’s range by 150 miles with a 30-minute charge. Charging network set to expand And, according to Musk himself, that is only the start. Pickups, SUVs power US May auto sales (WASHINGTON-AFP) – Pickup trucks and SUVs drove strong gains in auto sales in the US market in May, with the market helped by a rebound in the construction industry, automakers said Monday. Ford and Chrysler reported doubledigit sales growth from May 2012, while the number-one maker, General Motors, racked up a more modest 3.1 percent gain, and 2.5 percent for Japan’s Toyota. GM sold about 252,900 cars and trucks, with its luxury division, Cadillac, rocketing 39.9 percent from a year earlier at 13,800 units. Sales of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and pickups grew 12 percent, with the largest models in both categories showing the most strength, GM said. For the first five months of 2013, total sales reached 1,155,503 units, 8.3 percent higher than the same period last year. Ford delivered nearly 246,600 vehicles in May, 14 percent higher than a year ear-

lier, also driven largely by its pickup truck and SUV lines. Pickups were up 30.6 percent from May 2012, with Ford crediting the surge in the construction industry, while Escape SUV sales gained 26.2 percent. For the first five months of this year, Ford sold 1,026,833 vehicles, 13.9 percent more than the same period a year ago. Chrysler, controlled by Italian giant Fiat, said sales of nearly 166,600 cars and trucks were up 11.0 percent from a year earlier, led by a 22 percent gain in Ram pickups and 21 percent rise in Grand Cherokee sales. Chrysler sales for the first five months were 751,646, up 9.1 percent from a year earlier. Toyota meanwhile came in with 207,952 cars and trucks sold in May. Manufacturers were generally confident that the sales boom will continue throughout the year.

“New vehicle sales are heating up along with the weather, and solid May results coupled with an excellent Memorial Day weekend provide great momentum as we move into the summer selling season, said Toyota group vice president Bill Fay in a statement. “The five-year high in consumer confidence translated into especially strong retail sales and as the industry leader last month. But analysts warned that if the Federal Reserve begins to tighten its economic stimulus before the jobs market completely recovers, it could impact auto sales. “Improving economic fundamentals in May point to more new-car sales growth but warning signs are on the horizon as well, said Lacey Plache, chief economist at auto industry specialist Edmunds.com. “While rising consumer confidence from increased wealth... should continue to bring car buyers to market, these wealth effects could taper off later this

(BEIJING-AFP) – Nearly 100 vintage and classic cars set off on a month-long trek from Beijing to Paris Tuesday, with models from a 1913 Ford Model T to Bentleys and Mustangs starting out in the shadow of the Great Wall of China. The Peking to Paris Motor Challenge stretches more than 12,000 kilometres (7,600 miles) through the Gobi desert in Mongolia to Russian back roads across to Ukraine, Slovakia, Austria, Switzerland and finally ending up in France. Car number one was a hulking black 1917 La France Tourer boasting a 14.5 litre engine, with large round headlights and a single rectangular pane for a windshield. It stood on the start line flanked by festive Chinese dragons. It was followed by a stream of painstakingly restored and maintained vehicles, among them several Bentleys, from a regal and heavy silver 1936 model to a narrower 1927 version with a rounded body, and a number of Rolls-Royces. More recent classic cars included Porsche 911s, a Morris Oxford, and a few VW Beetles and Volvos. Drivers will cover several hundred kilometres each day for 33 days. The organiser Endurance Rally Association called it “the longest and toughest challenge anyone can drive in a vintage or classic car... an extraordinary adventure driving through some of the remotest places on earth. The journey, now in its fourth run since 1997, commemorates a historic 1907 race won by an Italian prince.

Aston Martin V12 Vantage S: A snarling monster in an impeccably tailored suit (Relaxnews) – The new range-topping Aston Martin V12 Vantage S draws on the company’s race car technology to create an extreme, track-focused supercar. The car, which Aston Martin claims plays second fiddle only to its One-77 hypercar in terms of performance, is capable of hitting 205mph (330kph) and is the first production vehicle from the British company to feature its new seven-speed Sportshift transaxle and gearbox, derived from its racing car technology. Developed for performance in any driving conditions, the V12 Vantage S offers drivers over 500bhp (573PS) of power, and, more importantly, plenty of torque across the rev band from idling to red line, so that power and acceleration are always there, no matter at what speed the car is traveling or in which gear. Also helping the Vantage S to deliver

when needed is the new gearbox – essentially a hydraulically assisted automated manual transmission – which ensures the smallest possible gap between gear changes and therefore loss of torque. And while this will no doubt make the car incredible on the track or in straight-line drag races, a paddle-shift gearbox will never replicate the delicacy and control that a manual gearbox and a clutch give the driver. It doesn’t matter how fast a car can go if it can’t be parked at the end of a hard day’s racing. Reverse parking without a clutch pedal is not for the faint-hearted, especially when the car being parked costs over $200,000. But this is clearly a car focused on speed. Much of the aluminum bright work usually associated with Aston Martins – such as on the air intake grilles – has been re-

placed with carbon fiber, while inside, the now familiar dashboard layout has a new addition – selector switches for engaging the car’s active damping system to tailor performance for Normal, Sport, and Track conditions. For example, switching to Sport mode opens the exhaust, increases the speed and timing of gear changes, firms the sus-

pension and backs off the sensitivity of the power steering. All of which makes the V12 Vantage S one of the most hardcore road cars the company has ever developed. Aston is yet to confirm pricing, but expect the V12 Vantage S to retail for around €175,000 before optional extras when Aston Martin starts taking orders.

Porsche launches anniversary edition 911 (Relaxnews) – What better way to mark the 50th birthday of a true motoring icon than with a special commemorative model? Due to be officially unveiled this September at the Frankfurt Motorshow – the venue where the original Porsche 911 made its official debut in 1963 – the special edition will boast a 400hp 3.8-litre flat-six engine enabling a 0-62mph (100km/h) acceleration in 4.5 seconds with a manual transmission and in 4.3 seconds with Porsche’s PDK dual-clutch paddle shift system. The car will top out at 186mph (300km/h). Clearly conceived and built for 911 purists, the 911 50 Years Edition (to give it

its full name) will forgo four-wheel drive – despite the power on tap – in favor of rear-wheel drive. However, keeping that pendulous back end in check are a number of physical, mechanical and electronic systems, including active sports suspension and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with rear limited slip differential. In terms of outward appearance, the anniversary model combines the best design elements from the current Carrera S model but is 44mm wider across the wheel arches (like the four-wheel drive Carrera 4). Other unique exterior touches include specially built 20-inch diameter, fivespoke alloy wheels, chrome trim on the

engine compartment grille plus enhancements to the front air inlets that will tell those in the know that this is not an everyday 911. Available in specially mixed (light) Geyser Grey, (dark) Graphite Grey, or black, each of the 1963 examples that

rolls off the production line will carry a numbered plaque, prominently displayed in the interior, and a 911 50 badge on the rear engine lid. The 911 50 Years Edition is available to order now for delivery in September. Prices start at $140,000 (€110,000).

STOCKHOLM, June 03, 2013 (AFP) – Volvo, owned by China’s Geely, acknowledged making mistakes that hit sales in China and the United States, but denied Monday in a newspaper interview speculation that the Sweden-based automaker would pull out of the American market. A Chinese sales target of 200,000 vehicles by 2015 wasn’t “realistic”, chief executive Haakan Samuelsson told the daily Dagens Nyheter. “We had 150 new dealers who didn’t know what Volvo stands for and a sales manager who didn’t speak the language. “Sometimes when you start something, it’s not perfect and you have to make changes,” he said. V o l v o car sales in China officially fell 11 percent to 42,000 vehicles in 2012 from the previous year, but the company earlier this year said its Chinese dealers had misstated some sales figures. And while the 340/375 MM was undoubtedly the star of the show, attracting bids from 30 different countries, it was merely one of 10 classic vehicles – nine of which were also Ferraris – to fetch more than $1 million. Other multimillion dollar lots included an immaculate 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica SWB Coupé Aerodinamico, which fetched $2.8 million (€2,184,000), a 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB, which went for $1.4 million (€1,120,000) and, making sure that Ferrari didn’t make a clean sweep, a stunning 1962 MercedesBenz 300SL Roadster, which also sold for $1.4 million (€1,114,400).

Emotional Charice admits she’s lesbian

Charice Pempengco

Singer Charice ended speculations about her sexual preference by finally admitting that she is indeed a lesbian. In an interview with “The Buzz,” Charice admitted: “Opo, tomboy po ako.” “Mayroon po akong chance na gawin lahat ng ito internationally. Pero pinili ko po dito dahil malaki ang utang na loob ko sa mga Pilipino dahil na-feel ko na gusto ko na sila ‘yung makaalam kung ano ako, or kung sino ako,” she said. An emotional Charice also apologized to her family and fans who are disappointed by her coming out. From the bottom of

my heart, sorry. Naiintindihan ko kayo.” Earlier in the interview, Charice admitted that she and her mom are not in good terms but said it is just normal for a mother and her child to have misundertandings. “Opo, nag-aaway kami ni mama. Kailangan ko po siyang intindihin. Kung nasaktan man niya ako, alam kong mas nasaktan siya bilang ina. Ngayon po, hindi kami magkaaway. Nasa stage kami na tina-try intindihin ang isa’t isa. Pero I have to give her credit na tina-try niyang intindihin ang sitwasyon. Nag-aaway po kami pero normal lang po iyon,” she said. Charice, however, clarified that she is not rebelling against anyone, especially her family. “Nagpa-tattoo ako, nagpagupit ako, lahat iyon choices na gusto ko. Alam kong very risky pero ginawa ko dahil iyon ang gusto ko. Hindi dahil nagrerebelde ako or nasaktan ako ng isang tao, ng pamilya ko or kung depressed ako. Ginawa ko po iyon dahil iyon ang gusto ko,” she said Without naming names, Charice also admitted she has had same-sex relationships. “Opo, naman. Siyempre hindi ko naman masasabi kung sino pero opo naman na-experience ko po iyon,” she said. However, she denied that she had a relationship with former “The Voice” finalist Cheesa Laureta. “I remember nag-post kami ng picture ni Cheesa na ang caption ko ‘my baby girl’ kasi nakita namin sa timeline namin sa Twitter namin na jowa, jowa daw. Pero no po. Si Cheesa is like a big sister. Hindi po totoo,” she said. Last month, Charice made headlines after it was reported that she supposedly ran away from home to elope with former

“X Factor” finalist Alyssa Quijano. According to Charice, she is now staying at a house in Cabuyao, Laguna with the people whom she never thought would “catch a bullet for me.” Asked who is Quijano in her life, the former “Glee” star said: “She’s an inspiration. She’s a very special person.” Charice said she and Quijano have known each other since they were 10 years old but it was only during “X Fac-

tor” that their paths crossed again. Quijano was a member of the group contestant AKA Jam, while Charice was among the show’s judges. Asked if she loves Quijano, the singer said: “Sana mabuksan niyo ang puso ko para makita niyo. Malakas ang tibok.” Furthermore, Charice admitted she is hoping to marry in the future. While her continuous absence in the local showbiz scene has puzzled her fans, Charice assured her supporters that she will be back in the limelight again soon. “Magkakaroon po ako ng recording. Magre-record ako ng isang song na mafifeature isang big project. And TV shows na lalabasan ko pero hindi ko puwede sabihin,” she told Abunda. The singer said she will also be working on her third solo album soon for her fans in the Philippines Charice said she is still being managed by Mark Johnson in connection with her career in the United States, while she still remains under the management of Glen Aldueza here in the Philippines. “It’s very nice to have ‘yung tao na kilala ka, alam ‘yung gusto mo at ayaw mo,” she said.

Angel Locsin maintains silence on rift with Angelica Panganiban

Angelica Panganiban and Angel Locsin

ACTRESS Angel Locsin kept her silence on the rumored rift with Angelica Panganiban. Angel said that it wasn’t the best time to discuss the issue as Angelica has went through a lot because of the passing of her adoptive mother. “Medyo sensitive kasi yung sitwasyon ngayon sa kanya. Ayoko ko munang mag comment or makadagdag pa sa pinagdadaanan niya. Basta masaya ako para sa kanya and deserve naman talaga niya (‘yung trophy).” The two actresses, who topbilled the 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival entry “One More Try,” both received the Film Actresses of the Year at the 44th Guiller-

mo Mendoza Box-Office Entertainment Awards held last week. Both actresses were present at the ceremony to accept the award and thank the moviegoers who supported the movie. It was Angel’s third Best Actress trophy for “One More Try.” She received the same awards at the Famas and PMPC Star Awards for Movies. “Masayang masaya ako talaga kasi pang second time ko sa Guillermo and never ko talagang inisip na bibigyan ulit nila ako ng ganitong kalaking parangal. Maraming maraming salamat talaga,” said Angel who was shaking while receiving the award. The actress was escorted to the event by her boyfriend, footballer Phil Younghusband. “I’m very, very proud of Angel. She’s very talented in the movie and I’m very happy for that,” Phil said. Angel said she had a successful 2012 as she top billed in the movie, received good reviews, got acting awards. “Nanalo ka ng award at nagkaroon ka pa ng ganito ka gwapo at kabait na boyfriend, I’m so happy,” she added. Angel is currently filming her next Star Cinema movie with Enchong Dee, Shaina Magdayao, Bea Alonzo and Toni Gonzaga.

Kathryn shrugs off rivalry with Julia Barretto

Kathryn Bernardo

Kathryn Bernardo shrugged off talk of a brewing rivalry between her and showbiz newcomer Julia Barretto. Bernardo said she is glad to have Barretto in showbiz since she definitely has something to offer. Bernardo said it’s just inevitable that people compare them since they are almost of the same age. “Siguro naman sa showbiz kasi hindi maaalis na favorite nila mag-compare. Ako kasi hate ko talaga kapag kino-com-

pare ako. Pero si Julia naman kasi welcome naman talaga siya,” she said. Bernardo said she is also happy that Barretto is now set to headline her first television series. “I think magkakaroon din siya ng new soap. Wala namang competition, sila lang ang gumagawa noon,” she said. POWERFUL TRIDUUM TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit Thou who make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal, You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory. Amen. A person must pray this for three consecutive days without stating his wish. After the 3rd day the wish will be granted, no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your favor has been granted. Grateful Thanks - TIM

KITCHENOMICS Keeping Hearts Healthy According to research from the University of Connecticut, funded by the California Table Grape Commission, eating grapes may help protect heart health in men with metabolic syndrome. In the study, men with metabolic syndrome who consumed grapes lowered their key risk factors for heart disease. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together — high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess abdominal fat and increased blood triglycerides — signi¿cantly increasing the risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Eating a variety of grapes may contribute to heart health by: „ Promoting healthy blood Àow „ Reducing oxidative stress „ Improving blood lipids „ Decreasing inÀammation

risp, juicy and sweet, grapes are a real crowd-pleaser. Even better, all three colors of grapes — red, green and black — are good for you. Grapes are a natural source of beneÂżcial antioxidants and other polyphenols. Current research suggests that grapes may help maintain a healthy heart, and may also help to defend your cells against a number of agerelated illnesses. Scientists are also working to uncover more links between grapes and eye health, brain health, joint health, and more. At just 90 calories per 3/4 cup serving, grapes are a sensible, delicious snack with no fat or cholesterol. People love to eat grapes fresh for a refreshing snack, but grapes also add sweet, juicy, crunch and color to salads, entrees and desserts. Here are six fun, Ă€avorful ways to enjoy California grapes: „ Layer — California grapes are juicy, nutritious and beautiful in breakfast parfaits. „ Roast — Just like when you roast vegetables, grapes also caramelize, yielding a Ă€avor that is wholly unique. You can top your dish with roasted grapes as is, or turn them into a luscious sauce. „ Grill — Oh yes! You can thread them on a skewer with other fruits, like pineapple and mango, vegetables, Âżsh, meat and poultry. Grapes can handle the heat, not only from the coals, but also from a spicy marinade or rub. „ Clip — The best way to present grapes on a fruit platter or as a (truly edible) plate garnish is to clip them into smaller clusters. Grapes provide height, coverage, color and simply great taste. „ Dip — Rich chocolate — dark, milk, white, Ă€avored — and grapes make a delightful pairing. „ Grab-and-Go — Pack them up for a snack or as an accompaniment to sandwiches and wraps. Here is a selection of recipes that show how grapes can add Ă€avor, texture, color, and nutrition and health-promoting properties to appetizers, salads, and sides. Note: Sometimes when a recipe seems too “healthyâ€? to appeal to picky eaters, grapes have a way of making these preparations taste better and look more appealing.
