PHL planning to acquire 3 submarines MANILA, Oct. 7 (Mabuhay) – In a likely shift in focus to territorial defense, Northern Luzon Command head Major Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang presented on Monday a paper detailing the country’s plan to acquire three submarines. He said submarines, by their inherent stealth capability, can be deployed to monitor and protect the country’s extensive maritime domains. These vessels are the conven-

tional-powered or diesel-electric type and generally cheaper than nuclear-powered ones. Also being eyed is the acquisition of six frigates for anti-air warfare, 12 corvettes for anti-submarine warfare, 18 offshore patrol vessels and three anti-mine warfare ships. However, the paper presented by Catapang did not specify on how long and how much it will cost the Philippines to complete See 3 SUBMARINES, page 6

NEW YORK CITY, October 5, 2013 (AFP) – Thousands of people poured into streets across the United States on Saturday in a push to overhaul immigration and end the legal limbo of more than 11 million undocumented immigrants. The coast-to-coast activities saw about 3,000 demonstrators – mostly Asian, Hispanic and Arab – demonstrate in New York before marching over the landmark Brooklyn Bridge, as counterparts in California marched in Hollywood. In all, protesters marched in 160 US cities. “What we need is to win over

peacefully those who are opposed. He have got to get a deal struck,” said Danick Martinez, 30, a Honduran who has been living and working illegally in the country for almost a decade. The March for Dignity and Respect was organized by the New York Immigration Coalition and other groups supporting legalization of undocumented workers. Organizers said they hoped to rally up to 130,000 people to push Congress to adopt comprehensive legislation to give a path toward US citizenship to the more than 11 million US residents who are living illegally in the shadows. “Here in New York, we have a spe-

cial obligation,” said mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio, a Democrat. “We are the city of immigrants, and we are proud about it. We have to lead the way.” Officials estimate there are about half a million undocumented workers in New York alone. The overwhelming majority of the undocumented are Hispanic, most from neighboring Mexico and many from Central and South America. HK journalists kicked out of APEC for shouting at Aquino NUSA DUA, Oct 7 (Mabuhay) – APEC hosts Indonesia on Monday denied stifling press freedom after withdrawing the credentials of several Hong Kong journalists for shouting questions at the Philippine leader, insisting that they had posed a security threat. Despite protests from Hong Kong’s main journalist group, President Benigno Aquino’s spokesman also said the journalists had “crossed the line” by aggressively questioning him about

a hostage siege in Manila that left eight Hong Kong people dead in 2010. “We deemed it improper for media to act that way, as they didn’t talk normally but they were very demonstrative, like they were protesting,” Gatot Dewa Broto, the Indonesian communications ministry official who is in charge of the APEC media center in Bali, said. “So we did this due to security See JOURNALISTS, page 6

Comelec gun ban violators now at 167 – PNP MANILA, Oct. 7 (Mabuhay) – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday announced the arrest of almost 170 persons for violating the firearms ban. Senior Superintendent Wilben Mayor, PNP spokesman, said that as of 9:23 a.m. Sunday, 167 persons, mostly civilians, have been apprehended for carrying firearms since the implementation of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) gun ban last September 27. Of these individuals, 156 are

civilians, three police officers, seven security guards and one government official, Mayor said. He added confiscated were 135 firearms, 45 bladed weapons, 23 other explosives, eight grenades, 10 firearm replicas and 1,192 ammunition. The gun ban is being implemented by the PNP and other law enforcement agencies for the barangay election period from September 28 to November 12, which is 30 days before, and 15 days

World Bank raises growth forecast for PHL MANILA, Oct 7 (Mabuhay) – The World Bank on Monday upgraded its economic growth forecast for the Philippines for this year, seeing nearly seven percent growth over the next two years. In its East Asia and Pacific Economic Update, the Washington-based lender said the Philippine economy, as measured by its gross domestic product (GDP), would grow by seven percent this year, up from an earlier projection of 6.2 percent made last May.

Philippine GDP grew by 7.6 percent in the first half of the year, exceeding the government’s target of 6-7 percent for the entire 2013. “Amid the challenging global environment, the Philippines is expected to sustain higher growth in the medium term,” the World Bank said. For 2014, the lender forecast growth of 6.7 percent, also higher than the previous forecast of 6.4 percent. In 2015, GDP growth is

expected to pick up to 6.8 percent. The World Bank said private consumption, which comprises over 70 percent of GDP, would continue to drive overall growth on the back of sustained remittances and the expansion of the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry. The doubling of infrastructure spending from 2.5 percent of GDP to five percent by 2016 would drive growth of government conSee WORLD BANK, page 6

PALEA members bring labor row to Pope Francis MANILA, Oct 5 (Mabuhay) – Some of the ground crew of flag carrier Philippine Airlines brought their labor dispute with PAL management to the Vatican, after a Philippine Catholic Church official brought their letter to Pope Francis. The PAL Employees’ Association had written the Pope seeking his “intercession” for a “just conclusion” to the dispute. “We seek the intercession of Your Holiness to achieve a just conclusion to the labor dispute,” an article posted on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines quoted PALEA pesident Gerardo Rivera as saying in the letter. The CBCP quoted PALEA as saying an appeal from the Pope to the stakeholders in the dispute “will exercise moral suasion and may prove decisive in a settlement fair to the workers.” PALEA said more than 2,600 regular PAL workers were laid off in September 2011. Its call against contractualization and for decent work and regular jobs has the support of the CBCP National Secretariat for Social See PALEA MEMBERS, page 6

PHL foreign reserves widen to $83-B as of end-Sept. MANILA, Oct 7 (Mabuhay) – Philippine foreign reserves grew in September on gains from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ foreign exchange operations and investments and deposits made by the National Treasury. Preliminary central bank data show gross international reserves (GIR) was at $83.028 billion as of end-September, from the revised $82.89 billion in August. GIR, which serves as a cushion

against external shocks, expanded at an annual rate of 1.219 percent in the January to September from $82.028 billion. The amount is enough to cover 8.7 times the debts maturing in 12 months, and is equal to nearly a year’s worth of imports. “The increase in reserves was due mainly to inflows from foreign exchange operations and investments of the BSP, and net foreign currency deposits by the

Treasury of the Philippines,” central bank Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. said in a statement. Inflows, however, were offset by payments for maturing debt and revaluation of central bank gold holdings due to sustained decline in the value of precious metals in the international market. The Bangko Sentral forecasts Philippine GIR to settle at $83 billion this year. (MNS)

President Aquino to invite potential investors to invest in the Philippines during APEC Summit BALI, Indonesia, Oct 5 (Mabuhay) -President Benigno S. Aquino III will invite the international business community to “take a look and invest further in the Philippines” during his attendance to the 21st Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Summit that is being held here, Communications Development and Strategic Planning Secretary Ramon Carandang said on Saturday. In a press briefing, Carandang told reporters that the President, who will arrive here on Sunday (October 6) will take all opportunities to showcase the Philippines as the best investment location in the region in order to drive up economic progress further. He said the President will highlight the reforms implemented by his administration to weed out corruption in government and which in turn has increased confidence in the country. “We’re going to be talking about inclusive growth. President Aquino is going to talk to the international business community and other world leaders. We are going to be showing that the reforms we have undertaken over the last three years have borne a lot of fruit in terms of increased confidence in the Philip-

pine economy and the management of the economy,” Carandang said. And as usual, we will be asking people to come take a look and further invest in the Philippines. As you know, we’ve seen rapid growth in the last three years but we are not happy that the growth has not as inclusive as we want. We have social interventions and you know all about it: healthcare, education, CCT (conditional cash transfer), but we feel that we need to make a bigger push for investments because investments is really what is going to sustain the economic momentum that we have,” he added. “So, as always, the President is going to take every opportunity to meet with world leaders and international business community to push for investments in the Philippines,” Carandang further said. He declined to enumerate which particular investment was being targeted by the President but said that “there are always good prospects.”“Even when the President does not go overseas, you have the economic team going overseas, and they have been doing this throughout the year. So really we do hope to be able to push for more investments for the coming years,” Carandang said. (MNS)

World fears US default, OPINION US Pres. Obama warns Finding ‘giants’ in the fields of Delano By Stephen Collinson

WASHINGTON, October 8, 2013 (AFP) – President Barack Obama Tuesday warned world leaders were nervous Republicans would “blow up” the US economy, and vowed not to budge on his demand for the debt ceiling to be lifted without conditions. But House Speaker John Boehner insisted there would be no “unconditional surrender” from Republicans and said Congress would only allow more US borrowing if Obama agrees to cut spending. There was one glimmer of hope for progress in the bitter showdown that has closed the US government and sparked fears that Washington could default on its debts if the debt ceiling is not raised by October 17. Obama said that if necessary he would accept a short-term deal to raise borrowing and reopen the government—a move that would effectively postpone the crisis for a number of weeks. But the president was adamant that he would not compromise on his refusal to cede ideological concessions to Republicans in return for receiving more authority to borrow money to finance US obligations. “What you haven’t seen before, I think, from the vantage point of a lot of world leaders, is the notion that one party in Congress might blow the whole thing up if they don’t get their way,” Obama said, in a White House press conference designed to hike pressure on Republicans. “They’ve never seen that before. And that does make them nervous.” Obama spoke a day after China, which is sitting on a vast pile of US Treasury bonds, warned that the time was running out for the United States to prove its creditworthiness and the credibility of the world’s reserve currency. Stocks dipped for another day Tuesday, with investors increasingly concerned that the government will not get its act together in time. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 159.71 points (1.07 percent) to 14,776.53 and the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index plummeted 75.54 (2.00 percent) to 3,694.83. Investors also sold off short-term bonds, sending the yield on the one-month Treasury note to 0.31 percent, its highest level since the crisis year of 2008, up from 0.15 percent Monday. Obama said Congress had two basic jobs – passing a budget and “making sure that America’s paying its bills.” He warned that lawmakers did not get to demand a ransom, and reiterated his position that he would only negotiate with Republicans once the debt ceiling was raised and the government, now shuttered for a week, is opened. “We can’t make extortion routine as part of our democracy. Democracy doesn’t function this way,” he said. Boehner appeared on television soon after Obama’s press conference to dig further into his own position. “The long and short of it is there is going to be a negotiation here,” Boehner said. “We can’t raise the debt ceiling without doing something about what’s driving us to borrow more money and to live beyond our means.” “What the president said today was if there’s unconditional surrender by Republicans, he will sit down and talk to us,” he said. “That’s not the way our government works.” Obama, who spoke to Boehner earlier by phone, argues that raising the debt ceiling is vital to America’s most valuable asset, its creditworthiness, which should not be prey to political uncertainty. Boehner counters that presidents have always bargained with lawmakers over raising the debt ceiling, and is unwilling to give up an area of prime political leverage. If the $16.7 trillion debt ceiling is not raised by October 17, the United States will be unable to borrow more money and will begin defaulting on its obligations, in a scenario that could tip the economy back into recession and trigger global chaos. The president said that a default would be, in the words of economists he quoted, “insane, catastrophic, chaos.” But he also sought to assure investors, US bond holders and others that the US remained good for its debts, even as he acknowledged “a cloud” over America’s economic credibility because of the shutdown. “Obviously my message to the world is the United States always has paid its bills and it will do so again,” Obama said. Asked what the government would do if the debt ceiling were not increased on time and the government would have to decide which bills not to pay, Obama said the issue was still being reviewed. “No option is good in that scenario,” he said. “We are exploring all contingencies.” Obama did signal some flexibility, saying he was open to negotiating with Republicans on budget issues—even if lawmakers extended borrowing and reopened the government only on a short-term basis. “If they can’t do it for a long time, do it for the period of time in which these negotiations are taking place,” he said. Republicans proposed a bipartisan committee to discuss how to get out of the budget impasse and the debt ceiling row. But Obama dismissed the move as a ruse to discuss spending cuts that only Republicans want, and vowed to veto such a solution in the unlikely event it reaches his desk.

Men who had poetry in their soul come silently into the world and live quietly down the years, and yet when they are gone no moon in the sky is lucid enough to compare with the light they shed when they were among the living. ― Carlos Bulosan, “Charlie Chan is Dead: An Anthology of Contemporary Asian American Fiction” One can but admire some 50 travellers, mostly youth and youthful others, driving up to this nondescript of a city on this fine Sunday afternoon – where temperature could rise to 112 degrees on a hot day and the best known two landmarks are its state prisons – North Kern State Prison and Kern Valley State Prison. From Highway 99 (off of I-5), the 200 miles travel from Los Angeles County seems to lead to nowhere. But the nation also knows Delano as an agricultural city, the center for growing table grapes; a place where almost 50 years ago on September 8, 1965, hundreds of Filipino grape-pickers from the vineyards walked out in masse. “Their union, the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC, AFL-CIO), was instrumental in forcing the growers to recognize and accept agricultural workers’ right to form and join a tradeunion and engage in collective bargaining,” said Jacklyn Joanino, a young organizer of Destination Delano, a community project recognizing Filipinos’ role in the Great Grape Strike of 1965. After visiting Orosi farm, the last remaining Filipino farming community in the U.S., the tour progressed to Delano Filipino Community Hall on Glenwood Street where the group aspires to place a national plaque as the site from which the 1965 Grape Strike was launched,” said Joanino. It was a convergence of students, parents, teachers and bloggers who heard about this “excursion” to re-learn FilAm history. Many were enthused to meet up with those who have worked in the fields and witnessed Larry Itliong and other AWOC leaders Philip Vera Cruz, Andy Imutan, Pete Velasco, among others held signs of “Welga” and walked out from their vineyards. Together with the famous Carlos Bulosan, these four AWOC leaders are the “giants” recognized by “Destination Delano”, deserving of recognition when the U.S. textbooks are re-written. The students were from the state colleges and universities in San Francisco, Davis, Long Beach, L.A., and advocates for the passing and implementation of AB 123 that proposes to re-write California textbooks to reflect Filipinos’ leadership in the U.S. labor movement. Some were from the Filipino Migrant Center who knows only too well the disparity in wages and working conditions of contemporary domestic workers; and others were concerned citizens. “ I was born and grew up in Delano but I never

read about Larry Itliong or Philip Vera Cruz from our textbooks; it’s always been Cesar Chavez leading the protests in our very soil,” said Kevin Riambon, a sophomore from UCLA. “Until I reached college two years ago, I didn’t realize Filipinos played a huge part in reforming the conditions of the farm workers in America.” It meant a whole lot for students like Kevin to have his ancestry recognized as contributory to the history of his country. “It builds up my self-esteem and pride of my heritage; that it should stand tall next to the achievements of mainstream culture.” The group of 50 met with former Delano farm workers Lorraine Agtang, Johnny Itliong, Mary Jane Galviso and Roger Gadiano who were in their teens when they toiled the vineyards alongside Itliong and Cesar Chavez in the early ‘60s. Agtang was one of those who testified before the California Assembly for the passage of AB 123. She showed marks on her fingers that bore the scars of twining grapes from their vines. When the grape strike commenced, the agricultural owners responded by sending goons to beat the strikers, and by turning off the gas, electricity, and water in the labor camps. “Mexican workers were pitted against Filipino workers,” said Agtang. Destination Delano is working with local, state and federal agencies to place Delano on the National Registry of historic sites. “My first pay check working one month of hard farm labor was $40,” said Gadiano. The pay was not parallel with the labor laws at that time. “The growers prefer the quality of work of the Filipinos, but boy, they did not provide good conditions for them,” said Gadiano. He described the migrant workers’ housing as “kind of a warehouse, with bunk beds and common bathrooms.” No medical coverage, although they were recruited from the homeland. The afternoon included a visit to the Paolo Agbayani Retirement Village, built by the Filipino farm workers, students and community activists to provide shelter for those who were evicted by the growers from their farms after they joined the boycott and strikes in the ‘60s. The village provided 59 single room units, bathrooms, center a/c and a lounge and dining area that provided daily meals. We visited Larry Itliong’s gravesite, marked only by a tall tree that Johnny said was given to him to plant by the cemetery supervisor when he worked there as a young boy. He tears up when he recalls how the migrant Filipino workers “gave it all” in the grape fields and when they died, he would see their belongings all bundled up in one luggage they came with. No names, no whereabouts, no relatives to claim those. Just a silent testimony to their contributions in history. “Our conditions are better now, because of them – fair wages, a medical plan for farm workers, clinics, day care centers, schools,”

Support for marijuana legalization grows in CA – What’s next? ANNA CHALLET NEW AMERICA MEDIA

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 07, 2013 – For the first time, over half of Californians are expressing support for the legalization of non-medical marijuana, according to new statewide survey results. With support having possibly reached a tipping point and efforts to produce a 2014 ballot initiative already underway, what might legalization look like in California? The survey, conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) with funding from the James Irvine Foundation, shows that 52 percent of Californians, as well as 60 percent of likely voters, support legalization. As recently as March of last year, PPIC found that support was at 45 percent. “Our state has for many years lived with medical marijuana – not to say it isn’t controversial in locations, but it’s generally accepted,” PPIC president Mark Baldassare told The Sacramento Bee. “It’s really now a different political context for having discussions about where does California go with legalization.” Over 60 percent of both non-Hispanic whites and African Americans are supportive, as opposed to 36 percent of Latinos. Some 48 percent of Asian Americans express support. Across all age groups from 18 to over 55, support stands at about 50 percent. Lynne Lyman, the California state director of the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA), a national non-profit that advocates for drug law reform, attributes the shift to a more informed public. “There’s a consensus that marijuana is less harmful than tobacco or alcohol,” she says. Lyman says that if a ballot initiative legalizing marijuana were to pass in California in 2014 or 2016, the state would have to “develop a regulatory infrastructure from scratch,” but she wouldn’t foresee it being challenged in the way that, for example, Proposition 8 was challenged in the context of same-sex marriages. And for now, she says, the Department of Justice is allowing Washington and Colorado to implement their recent legalization of marijuana, though the DOJ could decide to change its approach in the future. Lyman adds that legalization would result in “tremendous tax revenue” for the state; according to DPA, California could raise $1.4 billion annually by taxing and regulating marijuana sales. Law enforcement opposition Lyman says that law enforcement groups constitute the primary vocal opposition to legalization efforts. The California Police Chiefs Association, for example, has consistently opposed legalization efforts; the last California ballot initiative to legalize marijuana was Proposition 19 in 2010, which the vice president of the association said, among other things, would be unsafe for workplaces and roadways and would generate far less revenue than supporters estimate. Going against the trend is Stephen Downing, a retired Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief who sits on the board of directors of advocacy group Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. He says that the greatest harm of the war on drugs has been the mass incarceration of non-violent drug users, especially African Americans and Latinos; according to DPA, two out of three people in state pris-

ons for drug violations are African American or Latino, despite the fact that these groups use and sell drugs at rates similar to non-Hispanic whites. Downing worked in South Central Los Angeles and in narcotics enforcement for much of his 20-year career in the 1960s and ‘70s. “We’ve branded them for life as drug offenders. We deny them housing when they need it; we deny them employment. We fail to recognize that because they can’t find employment, they sell drugs. They can’t get a Pell grant to go to college,” he says. “So what we’ve done is destroyed lives, and we’ve destroyed the communities they come from, especially black and brown communities because of disparities [in enforcement and sentencing.]” He points out that law enforcement groups come out against legalization in part because some local police departments have financial incentives to enforce federal anti-drug policies. Local law enforcement agencies in California use federal grants (for example, Byrne Justice Assistance grants) to fund narcotics enforcement, including task forces that focus on drug-related arrests and marijuana eradication. Civil asset forfeiture laws, which allow law enforcement agents to confiscate private property that they believe is associated with illegal activity (often drugrelated) without having to file criminal charges, are another source of revenue for local police departments. Downing gives the example of a landlord in Anaheim who’s been served with a seizure notice by the federal government because he rented to a medical marijuana dispensary. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency worked in cooperation with local Anaheim police to investigate the dispensary, and if the property is seized, the DEA and Anaheim police would share the profits under a policy called “equitable sharing.” Drawbacks for small commercial growers Lyman acknowledges that with increased regulation, some growers will lose their businesses. “Not everybody has the means for playing by the rules,” she says. “Growers will need to obtain permits and show that they’re adhering to standards for safe growing, and not doing things like growing on federal park land.” Central Valley native Jeremy Evans, who has been a marijuana grower and worked within Northern California’s marijuana industry for the past seven years, says that most of the growers he knows are opposed to legalization, but not only because it could put some of them out of business. He says that many growers have spent years elevating the quality of their product; marijuana cultivation is labor intensive, and Evans says he works 14-hour days in the summer and fall, when the plants mature and are then harvested. With legalization some growers fear that the market could become dominated by mass-producing growers of greater financial means, who he says won’t approach cultivation with the same depth of knowledge, and might make use of chemical additives the way the cigarette industry has with tobacco. “There will always be a niche, though, for [higher quality] marijuana,” he says. “It’s like microbrews in the beer industry – there will always be a market for it.” Possible ballot initiatives\

California, New Jersey brace for the biggest One Kapamilya Go on Oct. 18 & 20 TFC’s largest event offers 15 stars in historic West and East Coast shows REDWOOD CITY, CA, October 2, 2013 – The promise of the campaign is clear: “Pinakamalaki, Pinaka-sulit, at Super-sayang Kapamilya Event!” Literally, ABS-CBN The Filipino Channel’s (TFC) biggest annual event, One Kapamilya Go2013, boldly guarantees to be the biggest, best value for money and super fun event for the whole family. Scheduled for October 18 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey and California’s Great America in Santa Clara on October 20, the promise is not without basis: TFC pulled out all the stops in making sure that the cast of 15 stars in the first ever coast-to-coast One Kapamilya Go can deliver worldclass entertainment and charm thousands with their winning “aw-shucks” appeal. For those in the San Francisco Bay Area and the New York Tri-state area who missed the Be Careful With My Heart U.S. Tour last May, they now have the chance to see their dream cast of Richard “Sir Chief” Yap, Jodi “Yaya Maya” Sta. Maria, Tart “Yaya Doris” Carlos and Viveika “Yaya Sabel” Ravanes. For thousands of fans who followed the just concluded, The Voice of the Philippines, they get to see and hear live coaches Lea Salonga and Bamboo with Salonga’s mentee, champion Mitoy Yonting, runner-up Klarisse De Guzman and finalists Janice Javier and Myk Perez Then there are the “Teleserye Babes and Hunks” Gerald Anderson, Maja Salvador, Cristine Reyes and Sam Milby, joined by Pop Rock Princess Yeng Constantino – all mainstays of the number one variety show in the Philippines,ASAP 18. Social media exploded with comments of “amazing line-up”, “great talent, great songs”, and “forget everything except your camera, phone and charger!” Indeed, excitement is reaching fever pitch. Coast-to-Coast One Kapamilya Go: Years in the Making The road this year to One Kapamilya Go actually began in 2011 when TFC rose to the challenge of accommodating as many fans as possible to Gibson Amphitheatre inside Universal Studios Hollywood where the full-day family entertainment and community event was held that year.

“Since 2008, One Kapamilya Go has been comprised of whole day activities that include auditions, parlor games, free movie screenings, meet and greet with the stars, offerings of Filipino food, attractions of the venue with theme park rides and then everything climaxes into a main show – a singular star-studded concert,” narrated Ricky Resurreccion, ABS-CBN North America head of Ad Sales, Trade Marketing & Events. “But in 2011, we did back-toback shows at Gibson Amphitheatre for the first time where we had capacity crowds,” he recalled. “Seeing that back-to-back was possible in one day, our Managing Director Chinky De Jesus threw us a challenge: why not coast-to-coast next time?” The challenge fit right into the mission of ABS-CBN TFC to be in the service of the Filipino wherever he or she may be. One Kapamilya Go has always been held in California. There was a growing clamor to bring the event to the East Coast. The TFC Events team did a dry run of sorts via

the launch of its concert brand, “TFC Presents”, bringing the redhot cast of the popular teleserye, “Be Careful With My Heart” for concerts in Los Angeles, California on May 10 and in Kissimmee, Florida on May 12. After drawing thousands to both events, sights were set for West and East Coast legs of One Kapamilya Go 2013. Last June at the Philippine Independence Day celebration in Manhattan, New York, TFC superstar Gary Valenciano revealed that One Kapamilya Go is coming to the East Coast in October. In August at the annual Pistahan Parade & Festival at the Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco, top TFC young stars Xian Lim, Maja Salvador and KZ Tandingan announced that One Kapamilya Go is also going to happen in the Bay Area. And, so here it is. As Lea Salonga tweeted: “Tara na! TFC’s One Kapamilya GO! Oct 18 Prudential Center Newark, NJ.Oct 20 California’s Great America Sta Clara CA. http:// www.onekapamilyago.com” A promise made. A promise delivered.

this acquisitions. An earlier Philippine Navy (PN) study revealed that it would need around P497 billion to fully upgrade its fleet. Once it has this money, the Navy can acquire the above-mentioned items along with four sealift vessels, 18 landing craft utility vessels, three logistics ships, 12 coastal interdiction patrol boats, 30 patrol gunboats, and 42 multi-purpose assault crafts that can be equipped with torpedoes and missiles.

Also envisioned are eight amphibious maritime patrol aicraft, 18 naval helicopters, and eight multi-purpose helicopters. “Looking at the PN’s inventory of mission essential equipment, it is very discernible that majority of our assets and vessels were acquired not necessarily because they fit into our strategy or operational requirement but because they are available as grant from the US or from our allies,” the PN study stated. concerns,” he said, adding that the press badges of four Hong Kong journalists had been deactivated. They were free to remain in Bali, but could no longer access the media centre or venues being used for the summit of the AsiaPacific Economic Cooperation forum, the official said. Hong Kong media said at least nine people, including journalists and technicians, were affected from Now TV, RTHK and Commercial Radio. As Aquino entered a meeting of APEC business leaders on Sunday, the reporters demanded to know whether he would meet Hong Kong leader Leung Chunying in Bali and apologise to the families of the hostage crisis victims. Now TV footage showed the journalists shouting “So you’re ignoring the Hong Kong people, right?” and “Have you met CY Leung” as they tried to reach their microphones over Aquino’s entourage. He did not answer the ques-

tions, and APEC staff then intervened to admonish the journalists with one accusing the reporters of “ambushing one of our visitors”, Now TV showed. Sham Yee-lan, chairwoman of the Hong Kong Journalists’ Association, said Aquino’s government had “yet to provide a satisfactory explanation” for why the eight Hong Kongers died in a botched police rescue and that the journalists in Bali were doing their job. “The barring of the media for asking critical questions is an outright infringement of press freedom that is totally unacceptable,” she said in a statement. But Aquino’s spokesman Ricky Carandang said the journalists had crossed an ethical boundary. “As a former journalist I know what it’s like to aggressively question a subject,” he said. “The behavior of these reporters crossed the line from mere questioning to heckling, and was even construed by Indonesian security personnel assigned to the president as a potential physical threat to him,” he said. Action, Justice and Peace (NASSA) and some bishops. Last Thursday, NASSA executive secretary Fr. Edwin Gariguez handed the PALEA’s letter to Pope Francis during an audience. Gariguez was in Rome to attend the 50th anniversary celebration of the Encyclical “Pacem in Terris” from Oct. 2 to 4. The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace organized the event in Vatican with a conference titled “Peace: new challenges. Gariguez was to make a presentation on the experience of the

Church in the Philippines, particularly the Mindoro campaign. Rivera said the support of Church officials and laity gave them hope “amidst the despair of a protracted dispute.” “Our only appeal is to restore justice to the working people. Unfortunately, the talks have not yet led to a settlement that is fair and just to the workers,” he said. In Malacañang, meanwhile, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the case is now with the Supreme Court. On the other hand, Gariguez

narrated his personal encounter with the Pope during an audience on October 3. “When I came face to face with him, I greeted the Holy Father by saying that he is very much loved in the Philippines, and a labor group who had been on strike for two years wants to send him a letter. And the Pope just said: ‘Thank you!’ And I cannot forget his warm and gentle smile,” Gariguez said. “The good news is I was able to successfully deliver the letter to the Pope,” he added. (MNS)

“we came to work; that is all we do.” “We are not a burden. We are just trying to help our families,” stressed Cabrera, 52.

“Our problem is that we are poor. Republicans have to realize that we are going to benefit the country economically.”

The challenge of sustaining growth and creating more and better jobs will have to focus on raising the productivity of the majority of the country’s workers, which requires increasing overall investments in human and physical capital,” the lender said. According to World Bank lead economist Rogier van den Brink, the Philippines’ strong macroeconomic fundamentals – characterized by low and stable inflation, healthy external balance and stronger government finances – have shielded the country from the persistent weaknesses in the global economy. As the recovery picks up in the US, Japan and the Euro zone, with growth accelerating in the

second quarter of 2013, developing countries in East Asia stand to benefit because of their high trade shares in the economy, the World Bank said, while adding that they need to be better prepared for potentially disruptive adjustments. “East Asia Pacific continues to be the engine driving the global economy, contributing 40 percent of the world’s GDP growth – more than any other region. With overall global growth accelerating, now is the time for developing economies to make structural and policy reforms to sustain growth, reduce poverty and improve the lives of the poor and vulnerable,” Axel van Trotsenburg, World Bank East Asia and Pacific regional vice president, said.

sumption, and both public and private investments. Downside risks to growth include a slower global recovery, uncertainties in advanced economies as the US Federal Reserve removes its economic stimulus, potential asset bubbles in the real estate sector and domestic reform lags. “Protracted economic slowdown and financial market volatility in high-income countries could slow growth through weaker external demand and large capital outflows,” the lender said. Going forward, the World Bank urged the government to focus on generating higher, sustained and more inclusive growth – the type that creates more and better jobs and reduces poverty.

MANILA, Oct 7 (Mabuhay) – As his administration grapples with the problem of jobless growth, President Benigno Aquino III stressed the need to ensure that “wealth is not concentrated in the hands of the few” in a speech before captains of industry in Bali, Indonesia. He arrived in the island, where he is to attend the 21st Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Sum-

mit, before noon Sunday. Speaking at the CEO Summit Conversation with Leaders, Aquino said that inclusive growth lets people contribute to nation-building. “The challenge for governments has deepened: When in the past we gravitated towards metrics that reflect merely the wealth collectively amassed by an economy, more and more the

task of governments has become ensuring that this wealth is not concentrated in the hands of the few, but rather that it is equitably utilized to raise levels of human development,” Aquino said. “In this manner, we engender a situation wherein the broader base of society can benefit from opportunities opening up through economic growth,” he added.

MOTORING A century ago, Ford’s assembly line changed society

This handout picture released by Ford Motor Company shows the first assembly line at the Highland Park Ford Plant in Highland Park, United States in 1913. It began on October 7, 1913 when engineers constructed a crude system using a rope and winch to pull a Ford Model T past 140 workers in a sprawling new factory. t the Crystal Palace in Highland Park, a suburb of Detroit, Henry Ford launched the modern assembly line a century ago – and helped spark a radical transformation of both manufacturing and society. By drastically reducing the cost of production with standardized parts and more efficient assembly, Ford was able to bring the luxury, convenience and freedom of the automobile to the masses. Highlights from CEATEC 2013 (Relaxnews) – This year’s show was big on future ideas but lacked any standout products for the present. With everything from January’s International CES to September’s International IFA all coming before it, not to mention countless exclusive Samsung, Microsoft, Amazon, Sony and Apple launch events, it’s little wonder that by the time the doors opened to 2013’s CEATEC in Tokyo, new consumer products were a bit thin on the ground. However, the white spaces left by missing consumer electronics devices were amply filled with some wonderful ideas and concepts for the increasingly high-tech future. DoCoMo intelligent headset Japanese network carrier DoCoMo demonstrated that Google isn’t the only authority on smart headsets and showcased its own take on ‘Glass’—an intelligent headset that can not only translate spoken and

written languages in real time, but will help the wearer read the person they are speaking to. Using facial recognition software, it can pull up past correspondence, professional background – say a LinkedIn profile, for example – and more. The car’s the star Just like a number of consumer technology events over the past 12 months, CEATEC had no shortage of high-tech automotive demonstrations. Nissan bought the latest iteration of its autonomous, battery-powered LEAF to the event and showed how it can not only automatically stay in lane at a sensible variable speed, but how it can slow down and make adjustments for other road users. The demonstration, which Nissan hopes will prove it’s serious about launching a fully autonomous car before the end of the decade, was awarded the overall Grand Prix by the US tech journalists in attendance who together make up the US

Media Panel Innovation Awards. Alps Electric’s dashboard of the future also captured attendees’ imaginations. Using an array of sensor technology it knows when a driver is unwell, is not paying due care and attention, is too tired and, thanks to facial recognition, if the driver is in fact a car thief. Gesture technology for smartphones But it was one of the smallest items on show that was potentially the biggest hit. Elliptic Labs won the CEATEC 2013 US Media Panel Innovation Award in the Computing and Networking category for its tiny little ultrasound chip that brings contactless gestures to any smartphone. Just like a bat uses sonar to recognize obstacles, the technology recognizes finger and hand movements up to 50cm away from a smartphone screen meaning that waving a hand in the general direction of a device is enough for it to obey the owner’s bidding.

(DETROIT-AFP) – It began on October 7, 1913 when engineers constructed a crude system using a rope and winch to pull a Ford Model T past 140 workers in a sprawling new factory dubbed the Crystal Palace. Henry Ford launched the modern assembly line in a suburb of Detroit a century ago – and helped spark a radical transformation of both manufacturing and society. By drastically reducing the cost of production with standardized parts and more efficient assembly, Ford was able to bring the luxury, convenience and freedom of the automobile to the masses. Other industries soon adopted the innovation and today, everything from cereal to caskets is made on assembly lines. “It had a huge, huge impact,” said Stephen Burnett, a professor with Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Standardization led to lower costs, higher quality and more reliable products. Most critically, the assembly line cut the amount of time it took to assemble a Model T from 12.5 hours to just 93 minutes. “Any time you increase the productivity of labor, tremendously valuable things can happen to the economy,” Burnett told AFP. Higher productivity means more profit, some of which is often returned to workers through higher wages. Workers then have more money to buy products, creating what economists call a virtuous cycle of growth. The assembly line also changed the way people worked and lived, accelerating the shift from rural areas to cities, and increasing the number of people doing repetitive, low-skilled jobs. From 100 to 1,000 Model Ts a day While piece work was a timehonored tradition and the moving assembly line had already transformed the meatpacking industry in Chicago and Cincinnati, it was Ford who found a way to make it work for complex manufacturing. “Henry Ford said if I could save every one of my workers 50 steps a day then I could save miles by the end of the year,” said Bob Kreipke, Ford’s corporate historian. Ford had already cut costs by standardizing the vehicle and its

parts – the Model T was famously available in any color the customer wanted, so long as it was black. But the cost was still too high and the volume too low for the “great multitude” he hoped to reach. That changed with the assembly line he launched in Highland Park. Trains filled with parts rolled down the main bay of the Crystal Palace, where cranes slid through the sunlight pouring in from a glass ceiling and lifted the parts up to balconies. Conveyor belts and gravity wells carried parts to workers as cars were pulled from floor to floor. “It was a beehive of motion when it was in play,” Kreipke said as he toured the historic plant Ford now uses for storage. “When he first started he made about 100 cars a day and it got up to 1,000 – which is almost the same as a modern factory.” In 1914, Ford’s 13,000 workers built around 300,000 cars – more than his nearly 300 competitors managed to build with 66,350 employees. Lower prices, empowered workers The specialization of the assembly line meant that Ford no longer had to use craftsmen and could instead hire low-skill workers and teach them a few simple steps. But the monotonous work led to high turnover, leading Ford to double his minimum wage in order to keep his line humming. The five-dollar day was eventually followed by the five-day work week, which meant Ford workers had both the money to buy his cars and the leisure time to use them. Despite the higher labor costs, Ford’s efficiencies allowed him to eventually lower the price of the Model T from its introductory rate of $850 to $260. Technological innovations like automation and just-in-time delivery have brought further efficiencies. New technologies, 100 years on Today, just 500 people work directly on the assembly line at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant, which now builds 605 Focus and C-Max sedans in each of two 10hour shifts. Some 48,000 people worked at the Crystal Palace at its peak. The flexible line builds five different models – a high performance, a hybrid and a standard Focus plus the hybrid and plug-in hybrid C-Max – with a range of colors and features, including a hatchback option. A complex computer system tracks each vehicle as it makes its way down the line, matching engines to bodies and letting workers know when it’s time to swap parts or press a different badge onto the frame. Hydraulics lift the car and the heavier parts so workers don’t have to stand in pits or strain themselves, and robots handle the most precise work like welding in the body shop.

In California, juice fans trumpet ‘reboot’ detox Alexander Mendez displays juice made with cucumber, lemon, celery, spinach and kale at the Silver Lake Juice Bar on September 17, 2013 in Los Angeles, California. AFP PHOTO/Frederic J. BROWN

(LOS ANGELES-AFP) – Mixing kale, cucumber and spinach at her home in Venice Beach, yoga teacher Kia Miller explains her passion for juice, which fans say can trigger a health “reboot.” “I like to do it twice a year, it’s like a reset button. You have an opportunity to think about your relationship with food,” the 44-year-old told AFP in the trendy ocean-front district.

“It’s a wonderful way to get powerful nutrients in your body,” added Miller, whose house has been transformed into an ashram, a place of peace away from the bustle of Los Angeles, half an hour away. Juice bars are everywhere in southern California, which has long embraced New Age culture. In upmarket areas like Santa Monica or Beverly Hills, they are

on every street corner. And it’s not uncommon to see Angelenos saunter down the street with a polystyrene cup full of vegetable juice, instead of coffee. “It’s the new wine,” said Miller, serving up a greenish brew to two visiting journalists. Veggie juices can contain anything from kale to ginger, mixed with beetroot, carrots, coconut milk or almonds. For fruit lovers there are dates, nuts, bananas and apples, while cucumber or celery produce lighter juices. Lose 10 kilos in 5 days And while some limit themselves to occasional juice at a neighborhood bar, others have turned it into a lifestyle option, with “cleansing” or “juice detox” regimes lasting three, seven, or even 30 days. Fans say such “cures” are a kind of spiritual experience. On a more practical level, others note that a five-day “cleansing,” consuming nothing but juices, can help one shed 10 kilos (22 pounds). Heather, a 42-yearold physiotherapist, has just finished a 72-hour juice detox – and raves about the experience. “It makes me feel so good it’s almost addictive. I feel closer to myself, I feel clear-headed, I feel more energized and my body gets the chance to reboot,” she told AFP. Indian juice bar manager Baba Ji has opened two outlets in the last two years in the hipster areas of Silver Lake and Los Feliz, just east of Hollywood. “In the last few years juicing has exploded – everybody wants to open a juice bar. Everybody want to do a detox,” he said.

Jasmine no longer just Anne Curtis’ baby sister Anne Curtis is extremely proud of her younger sister Jasmine, who is now making a name for herself outside of the shadow of the “It’s Showtime” host. Anne said Jasmine’s early achievements are noteworthy because it reflects her potential as an actress. Jasmine recently won her first acting award at the Cinemalaya Film Festival for her performance in the movie “Transit.” “I don’t think any ate would ever want her younger sister to be known just as the sister. It makes me so proud, especially ‘yung ginagawa ni Jasmine, teritoryo iyan na hindi ko pa natapakan. Parang na-miss out ‘yung chance na ‘yun pero si Jasmine talagang she’s excelling so much in that industry and it makes me so proud,” she said. Saying her younger sister deserves to build her own name in the entertainment industry, Anne vowed to always be there for Jasmine in all her endeavors. Meanwhile, Anne is likewise praying that her sister’s first independent film will be the official Philippine nominee in the upcoming 86th Academy Awards. “That’s an amazing achievement. I’m so proud of her and I hope na she keeps on striving for the best. The mere fact that it’s going to be the Philippines’ bet for the Oscars, I think that’s really major so all we have to do is pray na sana ma-nominate,” she said. Shot in Herzliya, Israel, “Transit” tells the story of Moises (Ping

Jasmine,

Medina) and Janet (Irma Adlawan), two overseas Filipinos who are forced to hide their respective children (Marc Justine Alvarez and Jasmine) after learning of the government’s plan to deport children of foreign workers. The 86th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on March 2 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California. ‘She’s my role model’ While the 25-year-old actress speaks highly of her younger sis-

ter, Jasmine, for her part, does not hide just how much she idolizes Anne. In an interview with Hola magazine in its premiere issue, Jasmine said she and Anne have really developed a close relationship, which was also brought about by their similar interests. “As I got older and got to know more about her industry, I understood her more. And that’s when we started to create a bond as sisters. We are making up for lost time now. There was never really anything to fight about because she always treated me like a baby. She was always very motherly,” she told the magazine. Jasmine said it is only recently when her older sister realized that she’s already 19 and she should let her do things by herself. “She has to let go of that image of me as her baby sister and think of me more as a friend. I think it’s because we didn’t get to spend so much time together when we were younger so she doesn’t want us to break apart so easily. And I totally understand it. She’s overprotective but she knows when she goes too far. She steps back every now and then and lets me handle situations,” Jasmine said. Saying she looks up to Anne in many aspects, Jasmine said: “I want to achieve all the great things she’s done. She’s my idol in this world. But of course I would love to surpass what my sister’s done one day. If not come close to it, at least, and feel the same way she’s feeling now.” (MNS)

Ara Mina and younger sister Cristine Reyes.

Ara Mina tight-lipped on Cristine-Derek split ACTRESS Ara Mina said her younger sister Cristine Reyes is not ready to discuss her breakup with actor Derek Ramsay. Ara texted Cristine when she learned about the split but the latter did not return her text. “Pag tungkol sa mga love life na yan, hindi ko siya kinukulit. Inaantay ko na lang siya mag open up sa akin. I guess ayaw pa niyang pag-usapan,” Ara said. Ara and Derek bumped into each other during the recent TV5 Trade Launch held at NBC Tent in Taguig City. Derek was emceeing the program while Ara promoted her upcoming show “The Gift” with Ogie Alcasid. Derek is also lead actor of the upcoming series “For Love or Money,” “Sabi ko lang sa kanya ‘O, kamusta?’ then sabi niya ‘Okay lang. I just talked to your sister, to your mom.’ ganun lang,” she said. “Wala pa kaming napapag-usa-

pan. He’s a gentleman para pagusapan yung details. Nire-respeto ko kung ano yung ayaw nilang pag-usapan. Kasi kung ako, ganun din. Ayoko ng i-detalye,” she added. The actress said her sister is mature enough to carry herself, especially on matters of the heart. She knows Cristine will get through it and her family will be behind her in every step of the way. “She’s in the right age. Kung ano man, kung totoo man ang balita, andito lang kami for her,” she added. Cristine and Derek broke up a month after the actor admitted he was dating the Kapamilya actress. (MNS)
