Republicans endorse path to legalize immigrants BY Michael Mathes
CAMBRIDGE, January 31, 2014 (AFP) – Republican lawmakers endorsed in principle the legalization of millions of undocumented immigrants on Thursday, but stopped short of backing a pathway to citizenship. The majority party in the House of Representatives did, however, specify that it backs opportunities for young immigrants brought to the country illegally
by their parents to become US citizens. President Barack Obama said Friday he hoped to resolve differences with Republicans on whether to offer illegal immigrants eventual citizenship, saying he was “modestly optimistic” about the prospects for reform. Obama gave his first reaction to a long-awaited plan by Republicans in the House of Representatives for immigration reform – an
issue that represents perhaps his sole hope for a meaningful domestic legislative victory in his second term. The president backs an eventual path for citizenship for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants living in the United States, but the Republican plan unveiled Thursday stops short of offering a route to US passports – a step many conservatives oppose as See LEGALIZE, page 12
‘Remarkable’ growth for PHL economy despite disasters BY Mynardo Macaraig

MANILA, January 30, 2014 (AFP) – The Philippine economy was one of the fastest-growing in Asia last year after shrugging off devastating natural disasters and expanding at a “remarkable” pace in the final quarter, the government said Thursday. The economy grew by 6.5 percent in the last three months of the year even as a super typhoon claimed thousands of lives and an earthquake struck popular tourist islands, Economic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan told reporters. See GROWTH, page 12
“This problem has been around for at least the last 15 years. It’s been turned into a political football. “I think it’s unfair, so I think it’s time to deal with it,” House Speaker John Boehner has said before partymates agreed on a new principle regarding undocumented immigrants.

PHL stands firm in diplomatic row with Hong Kong MANILA, January 30, 2014 (AFP) – The Philippines insisted Thursday it would not apologize for a 2010 hostage crisis in which Hong Kong tourists died, saying its response to the tragedy had been generous and compassionate. The statement came after the Hong Kong government announced on Wednesday it would impose diplomatic sanctions against the Philippines because of its “unacceptable” failure to apologize. “The Philippine Government regrets the Hong Kong SAR Government’s implementation of sanctions against the Philippines,” foreign affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said in a statement. However he said the Philippines “is not prepared to consider” an apology. Rather, the Philippines would reiterate its “deepest regret and condolences”, while providing more compensation to the survivors and the victims’ relatives. Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying said on Wednesday that the current visa-free arrangement for visiting Philippine diplomats and officials would be suspended from February 5. They are currently able to stay 14 days without a visa. Leung described the move as the “first phase of sanctions” and said the government may take more action if it thought it could be “effective” in securing an apology over the hostage-taking. Hong Kong has been infuriated by the Philippines’ refusal to apologize for the incident in August 2010, in which a former local police officer hijacked a Manila tour bus in protest at See NO APOLOGIES, page 12
The Aquino administration described as “unfortunate” Hong Kong’s decision to scrap the visa-free arrangements for visiting Philippine diplomats and officials but reiterated that the Philippines will not apologize for the 2010 Manila hostage crisis that resulted in multiple deaths to Chinese tourists. “At the end of the day, we submit that the act of one individual should not be construed as the act of the entire nation,” President Benigno Aquino has said
Fil-Am Bruno Mars ‘ain’t scared’ over Super Bowl halftime show NEW YORK, January 30, 2014 (AFP) – Hit singer Bruno Mars shrugged off the pressure of his half-time performance at Sunday’s Super Bowl, saying he’s not scared of the National Football League championship spectacle’s global spotlight. The 28-year-old from Honolulu, whose mother was from
the Philippines and whose father was from New York, will perform during Super Bowl 48, which pits the Seattle Seahawks against the Denver Broncos for the NFL crown. “It’s my job to uplift the people,” Mars said Thursday. “I’m going to give it all I’ve got. See BRUNO MARS, page 12

Pope wants to visit ‘Yolanda’ victims MANILA, Jan 29 (Mabuhay) – Pope Francis has expressed his intention to visit the typhoon-ravaged areas in Leyte, a Vatican official said. A CBCPNews report said Cardinal Robert Sarah, president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, said the possible visit is for the pope to show consolation and spiritual closeness to the victims of super typhoon Yolanda. The church official made the announcement on Tuesday during a Mass at the La Libertad Mission Church, in Palo, Leyte, which was badly damaged by the typhoon last November 8.
The pope sent the cardinal to the Philippines to visit the areas struck by the typhoon and to extend more assistance for rehabilitation efforts. “You go now because I might be going there also,” Cardinal Sarah quoted the pope as saying in his homily, drawing cheers and applause from the churchgoers. “I would not tell you the date but the Holy Father has been telling me ‘I might be also going there,’” he said. Jesuit Fr. Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesman, earlier said that Pope Francis may go to Daejeon, South Korea for the Asian Youth Day this August, in what

Child soldiers among 53 dead as gov’t troopers overrun Muslim rebels MANILA, January 31, 2014 (AFP) – Three child soldiers recruited by hardline Muslim rebels were among 53 people killed in a week of fighting with the Philippine army, a military official said on Friday. Regional spokesman Colonel Dickson Hermoso said the offensive against members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) group in the strife-torn southern island of Mindanao had resulted in the deaths of 52 rebels, including the children, and one soldier. “They are employing child soldiers with guns and camouflage uniforms. When we encounter them, we cannot discriminate if they are children or not, he told AFP. He said that soldiers and local residents confirmed the three child soldiers were among the guerrillas buried soon after their deaths, according to Islamic custom. The offensive came after the main Muslim rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), successfully
concluded peace talks with government negotiators last week aimed at ending a decades-long insurgency that has killed tens of thousands. The BIFF is a small group of militants opposed to the peace effort with the MILF, which has carried out many deadly attacks in recent years in a bid to derail the peace process. The website of the UN special representative on children and armed conflict said that it “continued to receive credible reports that the (BIFF) armed group was actively training and providing weapons to children. National military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Ramon Zagala said that troops had captured the BIFF’s headquarters as well as their bomb-making factory in remote villages of Mindanao in a bid to prevent the rebels from derailing the peace process with the MILF. “Our objective is to curb the use of
IEDs (improvised explosive devices) so as to protect the people and the community and protect the peace process because by doing (these bombings), they are spoiling the peace process, he told AFP. Fighting is likely to end by Saturday as part of an arrangement with the main MILF group, said Zagala. The MILF had cooperated in the operations against the BIFF by holding back their own forces and not letting the hardliners seek refuge in MILF territory. MANILA, January 30, 2014 (AFP) – The Philippines’ chief peace negotiator with Muslim rebels called Thursday on break-

Sotto was earlier quoted as citing the case of Chinese drug dealer Lim Seng, who was executed by firing squad during the Martial Law era. Sotto claimed this had eliminated drug trafficking in the country for at least 10 years. However, Rosales said: “I don’t know about the direct correspondence na nabawasan ... kasi look at us now. Kung nabawasan noon, bakit tayo ganito ngayon? Bakit ang laki-laki pa rin ng problema sa drugs, illegal drug trade? “Ang globally, that is a big problem. CHR chief nixes bid to revive death penalty, blames ‘flawed’ justice system MANILA, Jan 30 (Mabuhay) – Commission on Human Rights chair Etta Rosales on Thursday rejected the proposal to revive death penalty in the Philippines, saying it’s more important to improve the country’s justice system first. Rosales said she does not believe that death penalty as a method of punishment and crime reduction has a direct correspondence. “It does not follow that with the imposition of [the] death penalty, crimes will be reduced. The truth of the matter is if you go into our history, and studies ... it does not show that the use of capital punishment redowns to the reduction of crimes, she said. Earlier, Senator Vicente Sotto III filed a bill seeking to revive the death penalty because of the alleged rise in criminal acts in the country. In Senate Bill 2080, Sotto cited the “influx of heinous crimes ... in the country nowadays and the “indiscriminate and horrendous brutality happening everywhere to justify the reimposition of capital punishment. But Rosales said the influx of crimes in the country may be attributed to the “flaw in the justice system, “where so many of those accused are not convicted. “This is the absence of conviction, and punishment, and an effective litigation of the process that will in fact instill fear to commit crimes, she said. “I would think that would be a more logical answer that we should give because walang basis ang capital punishment, aside from the fact na gross violation of human rights – the right to life. On Wednesday, President Benigno Aquino III remained cool to proposals to revive the death penalty, also saying that the country’s justice system should be improved first. “Hangga’t hindi tayo nakakatiyak na talagang nabigyan lahat ng kanyang hustong karapatan para ipagtanggol ang kanyang sarili pag tayo’y may sinentensyahan ng kamatayan, wala nang bawian ‘yun, so palagay ko kailangang pag-aralan nang husto yan, Aquino told reporters after the awarding ceremony of The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) in Alabang. Likewise, some senators have also rejected the reimposition of capital punishment in the country. In the same interview, Rosales noted that death penalty may not at all instill fear among criminals. “Whether or not may capital punish-
away guerrillas still fighting the government to turn themselves in, as the death toll from this week’s clashes rose to 41. Negotiator Miriam Coronel said the main Muslim rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), was working with government forces to contain the breakaway group and stop the fighting spreading from remote villages in the southern island of Mindanao. Clashes broke out this week between troops and members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), a small breakaway faction of the MILF which opposes the peace talks.

Joint tenancy adversely affects your ability to give an inheritance to property In California, it is often the practice for a realtor to advise married buyers to place title to property in joint tenancy. Police find 120 captured sea turtles in Palawan swamp PUERTO PRINCESA, January 31, 2014 (AFP) – Philippine police said Friday they rescued 120 protected sea turtles found hidden in a pen inside a mangrove swamp, apparently intended for sale to foreign traders. It is just the latest case of sea turtles captured in the western island of Palawan where various species are known to congregate said local police chief Senior Superintendent David Martinez. A police patrol in Balabac town on Tuesday came upon a huge pen containing 120 live sea turtles of various species and sizes hidden under the branches of mangroves, he said. “They were just stored there in the swamp. They (the perpetrators) probably just visited them occasionally when they added newly-caught turtles, Martinez told AFP. The turtles were set free but no one was found tending the hidden pen. Martinez said an investigation was ongoing to determine who captured and stored the sea turtles. Such seizures of illegally-captured turtles are common in Balabac, located about 850 kilometres (528 miles) from Manila because the animals often congregate there, the police chief added added. Sea turtles are protected under Philippine law and catching them is punishable by at least 12 years in jail. In recent years, Philippine authorities have frequently caught foreigners, often Chinese, catching or buying sea turtles in the waters off Palawan. Turtles are often sold as exotic pets, end up in food markets or are used by practitioners of traditional medicine. Earlier, Philippine authorities said they had also seized a huge haul of more than a thousand helmet shells from a protected species of sea snail which were being shipped for sale. Police and fisheries bureau personnel seized 106 boxes, each containing at least 15 of the shells, on the poverty-stricken southern island of Jolo on Saturday following a tip-off, the fisheries bureau said. The large shells, from the Cassidae family of sea snails, are valued for their beauty and are often used as decorations and as fashion accessories. The boxes of shells were just about to be shipped for sale in the major cities of Cebu and Manila when they were seized.

Need help with debt but too embarrassed to ask? Have you ever faced a situation in your life where you needed help so badly but you were just too afraid or embarrassed to ask for it? Perhaps you felt confused and overwhelmed with the problem that you spent sleepless nights trying to figure out what to do. As a bankruptcy attorney, over the years I have met a lot of people who were simply too embarrassed to seek help with their debt problems. Of course, this is perfectly understandable. After all, financial matters are often too personal that we don’t even share this kind of information with our family or closest friends. The result is often isolation and loneliness. If people only knew what you were going through, maybe they could have extended a helping hand or at least offer to help you get professional help. But unless you open up, people don’t have the foggiest idea about what you’re going through. So what do you do? Oftentimes I meet people who tell me that on the outside, everything looks like they are going just great. At least that’s what everyone thinks. They have good jobs, live in nice homes, they drive fancy cars and they own expensive things. These people look financially successful in the eyes of the world. But unbeknownst to everyone, these people are harboring a deep secret: Nobody knows that everything that they have was purchased on credit and they could hardly afford to make the payments each month!!! These people are in debt to their eyeballs and no one has the slightest clue. At the end of a long day, these people can’t even get a good night’s sleep because they are worried sick about how their next paycheck will cover all their bills. They get this sick feeling in their stomach just think-
ing about the pile of bills on their kitchen table that they haven’t been able to pay. The world thinks that they are financially successful so how can they let anyone down? They need to keep up with the image that the world has of them and they don’t want to disappoint anyone. So day after day, they continue to live with this “secret” that nobody knows. Deep inside, it’s driving them crazy. If your finances are out of control, you need to do something about this situationthe sooner the better. Don’t let yourself drown in debt and ruin your future. If you need to get a fresh financial start by eliminating debts or at least consolidating your bills, remember that we also have bankruptcy laws that can help you get out of the financial mess that you may be in. Debt problems can happen to anyone and there is no need to be embarrassed in asking for help! Don’t be discouraged. It’s not the end of the world. If you have made mistakes in the past, well, who hasn’t? You don’t need to face debt problems alone. Help is available but you need to take action. MANILA, Jan 31 (Mabuhay) – Television host and actor Vhong Navarro and his family have been receiving threats since he was allegedly mauled by the group of Cedric Lee and Deniece Cornejo last week. This was one of the reasons why film director Chito Roño, Navarro’s manager, and lawyer Dennis Manalo met with Interior Secretary Mar Roxas and police Director Leonardo Espina on Friday at Camp Crame. The meeting lasted for more than an hour. “Isang insidente dun sa bahay ni Mr. Vhong Navarro ay merong hindi kilalang taong umaaligid at nagsabi pang pinabubuksan niya yung gate,” Manalo told reporters after the meeting. “Aside from this, Mr. Vhong Navarro has been receiving anonymous text messages... these text messages... contain threats and we have been advised that this matter should be referred to the bureau investigating the case so that they can study how it can be used for the case and determine who these people sending these messages are,” he added. Navarro’s camp raised their concern on the alleged protocol violation committed by some members of the Southern Police District during the time Navarro was brought to the precinct until he was asked to sign the blotter.

“This is a remarkable turnout,” Balisacan said, as he emphasised the final quarter expansion was expected to be the fastest in the Asia-Pacific after China, which recorded annual GDP growth of 7.7 percent last year. Growth for all of 2013 was 7.2 percent, the fastest since President Benigno Aquino came to power in 2010 and exceeding the government target of 6.0-7.0 percent. The government said the main drivers of growth were in the manufacturing, trade, real estate and finance sectors, while hailing the performance as further proof of Aquino’s economic stewardship. The Philippines endures relentless natural disasters because it is located along a typhoon belt and the so-called Ring of Fire, a vast Pacific Ocean region where many of Earth’s quakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
However the final quarter of last year was particularly brutal, with Super Typhoon Haiyan leaving 8,000 people dead or missing in November as it crushed entire communities across the central Philippines. The typhoon also ruined the livelihoods of millions of people mostly in poor farming and fishing communities, and a multi-billion-dollar effort to rebuild the devastated areas is expected to take many years. Haiyan came after a 7.1-magnitude quake struck some of the country’s main tourist regions in October, claiming more than 220 lives. “We were expecting that somehow, given what happened in November (with Haiyan), it could really pull growth down,” Astro del Castillo, an analyst with local investment management firm First Grade Finance, told AFP.

amnesty. “The devil is in the details,” Obama said in a “Google+ Hangout” online forum dedicated to promoting policies he laid out in his State of the Union address on Tuesday. “I don’t want to prejudge and presuppose that we can’t close some of those gaps,” Obama said. “I’m going to keep on fighting as hard as I can and remain, as I said, modestly optimistic.” Most experts agree the Republicans’ low level of support among voters of recent immigrant stock cost their candidates badly in recent elections, and the party is under pressure to reach out. But many within the party ranks fear that passing legislation to help regularize the situation of millions of undocumented migrants could hurt them with voters from their white conservative base. At a retreat for Republican representatives under the leadership of House Speaker John Boehner to set priorities ahead of November’s mid-term elections, members drew up an outline approach. “There will be no special path to citizenship for individuals who broke our nation’s immigration laws - that would be unfair to those immigrants who have played by the rules and harmful to promoting the rule of law,” said the draft, obtained by reporters. The draft said such immigrants “could live legally and without fear in the US but only if they were willing to admit their culpability, pass rigorous background checks, pay significant fines and back taxes.” The one-page “Standards of Immigration Reform” is a only Republican messaging document in a mid-term election year. But it may also represent the beginning of a thaw in a contentious issue of a deeply divided Congress.

his sacking. After negotiations broke down, eight people from Hong Kong were killed and seven wounded in a bungled rescue effort by Philippine security forces. Philippine President Benigno Aquino has consistently rejected Hong Kong’s demands for an apology, saying the tragedy was caused by the hostage-taker. The Philippines has already provided undisclosed financial compensation, with the money donated by private individuals. Without specifically referring to money, Hernandez said the Philippines had responded to appeals for “compassion” from Hong Kong “without equivocation and in

It’s just us with our instruments up there. I hope that’s enough.” Mars said after he accepted the offer to perform that he was told he could have another act join him and selected the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who will also sing during the half-time show. “They are the first band I thought of. They are just a soulful band,” he said. “It’s an honor to be sharing the stage with them. They are one of my favorite bands of all time.” Asked about some of his favorite prior half-time performers, Mars named Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Beyonce and the late Michael Jackson. “It’s prestigious they gave a new guy a shot,” Mars said. “We were all watching last year and wondering what if we got the call to do that.

The principles call for improved border security and revamping the country’s outdated visa and employment verification programs. But it still leaves House Republicans at odds with President Barack Obama and the US Senate. The upper chamber last year passed a bipartisan immigration bill that included a 13-year pathway to citizenship for the more than 11 million people in the United States living in the shadows. Boehner assured members behind closed doors that the House would not take up “or engage in negotiations with the Senate” on that measure, but stressed that step-by-step reform was important. “The safety and security of our nation depends on our ability to secure our border, enforce our laws, improve channels for legal entry to the country, and identify who is here illegally,” Boehner said A pro-Republican pressure group, the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles praised the plan as better than Obama’s, and noted that it did not close the door to citizenship. “If those who legalize want to become citizens, they need to follow the process established by current law,” said Alfonso Aguilar, who worked on citizenship issues for former president George W. Bush. The main US rights group, the American Civil Liberties Union, welcomed the Republicans’ step forward, but complained that it does nothing to tackle injustices in current immigration system. “To lock up people in deplorable prisons and detention facilities, deny them a right to a lawyer or even a hearing before they are imprisoned or deported is inhumane,” it said. The political group spearheading pressure from reform, the DREAM Action Coalition – which is behind Obama’s plan – gave a guarded welcome to the rival idea, but said it would wait to see any bill. a most generous manner” and that more compensation was on its way. Hernandez indicated that the Philippines had believed that recent pledges of more compensation, and their imminent delivery, had resolved the issue. “We have been made to understand that the victims and their families have agreed to this offer,” he said, while holding firm that the compensation package and another expression of regret were the Philippines’ final position. “To bring the issue to its final conclusion, the Philippines remains committed to manifest compassion for the victims and their families and is ready to turn over the additional tokens of solidarity from the Filipino people,” he said. “We’re honored. Some greats have performed on that stage. We’re excited about it.” Mars refused to side with one team or the other for the big game, saying that growing up, he followed the University of Hawaii team and attended the annual NFL Pro Bowl all-star game in Honolulu. “Whoever has got the most Polynesians on their team, that’s who we’re rooting for,” Mars said. Thanks to Denver defensive lineman Sione Fua, an American of Tongan heritage, you can mark down Mars as a Broncos fan, sort of. One issue the players and Mars will have to contend with is the cold. This will be the first Super Bowl to be staged outdoors in a cold-weather city and temperatures near freezing are predicted. “You never know what to expect,” Mars said. “We just started rehearsing two nights ago. The microphone turned into a popsicle. It was frozen. Things like that you don’t take into consideration. “We’re working on getting heaters for everything.”

California is a good choice for new immigrants How are you enjoying out weather, don’t take it fore granted. Towards the beginning of January, I was in Laguna beach with my kids and the weather was in the low 70’s. We saw a bunch of surfers, a few dolphins and a couple of migrating gray whales just being close to the beaches. I am shaking my head thinking why home prices in California will continue to rise. California has been a major “gateway for immigrants to this country it is home to the largest numbers of immigrants, Latinos, and Asians in the country. Today, more than 1 in 4 one-third of the state’s total purchasing Californians is an immigrant (foreign- power. Latino immigrants in California born), and more than half of Californians experience pronounced upward mobility are Latino or Asian. Immigrants and their over time in terms of mastering English and adult children account for roughly 1 in 4 owning their own homes. And most native of the state’s registered voters. Latino and born Californians have experienced wage Asian entrepreneurs (both foreign-born and gains from the presence of immigrants in native-born) own more than one-quarter the state’s labor market. These hardworkof all businesses in the state, while Latino ing Californians have formed the backbone and Asian consumers account for nearly of the California economy throughout

the state’s history, and they will be a key ingredient to California’s economic rebound. We should all be proud and keep up the great work we are all contributing to California. More than one quarter of Californians is immigrants. The foreign-born share of California’s population rose from 21.7% in 1990, to 26.2% in 2000, to 27% in 2011, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. California was home to 10.2 million immigrants in 2011, which is greater than the total population of Michigan. 46.8% of immigrants (or 4.8 million people) in California were naturalized U.S. citizens in 2011 (up from 31.2% in 1990)— meaning that they are eligible to vote. More than half of Californians are Latino or Asian—and they vote. The Latino share of California’s population grew from 25.8% in 1990, to 32.4% in 2000, to 38.1% (or 14.4 million people) in 2011. The Asian share of the population grew from 9.2% in 1990, to 10.9% in 2000, to 13.2% (or 5 million people) in 2011, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In California, 90.4% of children with immigrant parents were U.S. citizens in 2009, according to data from the Urban Institute. In 2009, 90.6% of children in Asian families in California were U.S. citizens, as were 93.3% of children in Latino families. 2012 purchasing power of California’s Latinos totaled $310.5 billion – an increase of 353% since 1990. Asian buying power totaled $236.7 billion – an increase of 448% since 1990, according to the Selig Center for Economic Growth at the University of Georgia. California’s 566,573 Latino-owned businesses had sales and receipts of $80.3 billion and employed 458,922 people in 2007, the last year for which data is available. The state’s 508,969 Asian-owned businesses had sales and receipts of $181.3 billion and employed 905,957 people. Together, businesses owned by Latinos and Asians comprised more than one-quarter of all businesses in the state, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2007 Survey of Business Owners. California’s immigrants move up the socioeconomic ladder over time – learning English, buying homes, and escaping poverty. A study by demographer Dowell Myers of the University of Southern California found that: The share of California’s foreign-born Latinos who reported being proficient in English as of 2000 rose from 33.4% of

those who had been in the United States for less than 10 years to 73.5% among those who had been here for 30 years or longer. The share of foreign-born Latinos in California who owned their own homes as of 2005 rose from 16.4% of those who had been in the United States for less than 10 years to 64.6% among those who had lived here for 30 years or more. The share of California’s foreign-born Latinos who lived below the poverty line as of 2005 dropped from 28.7% of those who had been in the United States for less than 10 years to 11.8% among those who had been here for 30 years or more. The share of immigrants in Los Angeles County who owned their own homes as of 2005-2006 rose from 14.8% of those who had come to the United States within the previous 10 years to 63.4% of those who had lived here for more than 30 years – compared to a homeownership rate of 54.2% among the native-born, according to a study by Manuel Pastor and Rhonda Ortiz at the University of Southern California. Naturalized citizens excel educationally. In California, 33.2% of foreign-born persons who were naturalized U.S. citizens in 2011 had a bachelor’s or higher degree, compared to 17.4% of noncitizens. At the same time, only 24.9% of naturalized citizens lacked a high-school diploma, compared to 48.9% of noncitizens. The number of immigrants in California with a college degree increased by 51% between 2000 and 2011, according to data from the Migration Policy Institute. In California, 81% of children with immigrant parents were considered “English proficient as of 2009, according to data from the Urban Institute. The English proficiency rate among Asian children in California was 86.4%, while for Latino children it was 83%, as of 2009. Living is California is a most likely choice for new immigrant, this family might have to rent first but sooner or later they will have to buy a home. California homes will always be in demand no matter what anyone says. There is a little bit of a negative migration for wealthier Californians due to some tax breaks being offer out of state, but rest assure these Californians leaving us either comes back to live or has never completely move out of the state. Most of the wealthy have second homes here in Sunny California, they might be residing out of state on Paper but most likely they are living here most of the time. MANILA, Jan 31 (Mabuhay) – A Philippine diplomat who went without food for 14 days last year will lead another fast on Saturday in a bid to pressure world leaders over climate change. Naderev “Yeb Sano, the Philippines’ lead negotiator at United Nations climate talks, drank only tea and water throughout the last meeting in Poland in November, garnering world headlines and praise from developing nations. Sano’s latest symbolic one-day hunger strike is an attempt to maintain pressure ahead of the next UN talks in Peru, with his tactics beginning to attract followers around the world via social media. “The objective is to keep connecting with the people who believe in climate justice ... I’ve always believed in fasting as an important instrument in provoking change, Sano said. Sano will carry out his February fast while visiting Tacloban, a city in the eastern Philippines that was devastated when Super Typhoon Haiyan tore across the region in November. Haiyan, which was the strongest typhoon ever to make landfall and left 8,000 people dead or missing, triggered Sano’s original decision to fast at the UN climate talks in Warsaw. Sano said he expected other people around the world connected via social media to follow his example, in what he believes will be a growing movement ahead of the Peru round of talks in December. The Peru gathering is vital in trying to secure a global pact by 2015 that would limit global warming to 2.0 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) over preIndustrial Revolution levels. Sano’s fasts have been promoted by Nobel laureate Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project, which has 143,000 followers on its Twitter feed @ClimateReality.

PHL: HK sanction ‘unfortunate’, still won’t apologize
MANILA, Jan 30 (Mabuhay) – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Thursday described as “unfortunate” Hong Kong’s decision to scrap the visa-free arrangements for visiting Philippine diplomats and officials but reiterated that the Philippines will not apologize for the 2010 Manila hostage crisis. The DFA said the country has been doing its best to put closure to the 2010 Manila bus hostage crisis. However, it said it will not apologize for the incident, which led to the deaths of several Hong Kong nationals. “The Philippine government regrets the Hong Kong-SAR’s implementation of sanctions against the Philippines, particularly the requirement of visas usually given to Philippine officials…” Foreign Affairs Spokesman Raul Hernandez said. “The sanction is unfortunate because a substantive closure on the Quirino Grandstand had already been arrived at three years ago with the previous Hong Kong-SAR, the victims and their families,” he added. Hernandez said the government responded immediately to an “appeal for compassion” sent last October. “Additional tokens of solidarity have been pledged by the Filipino people at the behest of the Philippine government. These amounts being offered are substantially more than those previously accepted by the victims and their families,” he said. He said the government was made to understand that the victims have already agreed to such “tokens.” Not ready However, the DFA Spokesman said Hong Kong asked for a renegotiation and an apology “[which] the Philippines, as a sovereign nation, is not prepared to consider.” He said the country remains committed to “manifest compassion” and is ready to “turn over the additional tokens of solidarity from the Filipino people.” Hernandez also assured the Filipino people that the government has done its best to address and put an end to the hostage crisis. Hong Kong announced Wednesday it was imposing sanctions on the Philippines because of its “unacceptable” failure to apologize for the hostage crisis. The current visa-free arrangement for visiting Philippine diplomats and officials will be suspended from February 5, Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying told a press conference. Currently they are able to stay 14 days without a visa. Leung described the move as the “first phase of sanctions” and said the government may take more action if it thinks it could be “effective” in securing an apology over the 2010 hostage-taking. He added that every year, 700 to 800 diplomats or officials visit Hong Kong from the Philippines on the existing visa-free arrangement. (MNS)
Aquino worried over passage of Bangsamoro law in Congress
MANILA, Jan 29 (Mabuhay) – The Bangsamoro Basic Law hasn’t even been crafted yet, but President Benigno Aquino III is already worried over how Congress will handle it. “Well, siyempre pag pumunta na sa Kongreso merong mga nag-aalala tayo ng konti or siguro kailangang makiusap tayo na huwag nating pairalin iyong kaba,” Aquino told reporters after the awarding ceremony of The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) in Alabang on Wednesday. He issued the statement after the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) signed the last and most contentious of the four annexes to the Framework Agreement on the Bangsamoro (FAB) over the weekend. The annexes will be used as guides in the drafting of the Bangsamoro Basic Law, which is expected to result in a Bangsamoro Political Entity that will replace the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). Government peace panel chair Miriam CoronelFerrer said they hope to present the Bangsamoro Basic Law, which is being crafted by a Bangsamoro Transition Commission, to Congress early this year. Fear of the unknown Aquino, however, said he is worried because there are probably lawmakers who are wary of the measure. “Baka meron diyan na hindi pa kumpleto ang impormasyon at merong tinatawag na fear of the unknown,” he said. Because of this, he said they are trying to be transparent in the crafting of the law. Aquino added that they made the framework agreement with the Constitution in mind, allaying fears by some lawmakers that passing the law may require amendments in the current Charter. “Sana matignan lahat ng panukalang ilalabas
nung Transition Commission at doon tingnan bawat detalye kung meron nga na hindi kaalinsunod sa Saligang Batas. At kung meron, ako po ang unang magugulat dahil mula sa umpisa, ang framework nga ho ay dapat iyong nakasaklaw na sa Saligang Batas para mas madali nating mapatupad itong paguunawaan,” he said. Positive Despite the possible opposition from some lawmakers, Aquino said he’s positive that the general public will welcome the Bangsamoro Basic Law, which is expected to end the decades-long armed conflict in Mindanao “Kapag ito pong lahat ay naipaliwanag sa taumbayan... palagay ko the overwhelming majority will say that if this is necessary step to get to peace, then they will wholeheartedly support it,” he said. After Congress enacts the law, the Palace said a plebiscite will be set for its approval, which they hope to take place in 2015. Once the law is approved in a plebiscite, the people of the new Bangsamoro political entity will elect their officials, which the government hopes to happen before June 30, 2016. As for the possible spoilers to the peace process, Aquino said government forces, particularly the military, will continue to defend the public. “So the AFP [Armed Forces of the Philippines], in its role to protect our people, is going on this operations to prevent these lawless activities from inflicting harm on our populace and to seriously degrade their abilities to again act as spoilers,” he said. Malacañang has earlier said the MILF is helping the government in fending off attacks from its splinter group, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF). (MNS)
Sotto: PHL now drug traffickers’ playground due to absence death penalty MANILA, Jan 29 (Mabuhay) – The Philippines is now the playground of drug traffickers in Asia due to the lack of severe punishment for such crime, Senator Vicente Sotto III, known for his pro-life stance, said Wednesday. Sotto believed the reimposition of capital punishment will send a chilling effect on criminals behind heinous crimes. “I’m not saying we use it [death penalty] all the time. I’m just saying iba yung me sword of Damocles na nandun... alam nilang may death penalty dito. It will be something to consider for these drug cartels, maiisip nila, teka danger, pareho na pala ng Singapore, Malaysia ito,” he said. On January 22, Sotto filed Senate Bill 2018 or “An Act Imposing Death Penalty in the Philippines.” Sotto, former head of the country’s anti-drug enforcement group, said drug traffickers cannot manufacture in Singapore, Malaysia and China because of the imposition of death penalty there. The senator said the narcotic enforcement officers fear that in the next five years, the Philippines will be in the same situation as Mexico, if the government will not do something.
Aside from high-scale drug trafficking, Sotto said he was also particularly concerned with rape with murder or aggravating circumstances happening in the country recently. “Paano magbabago (ang kriminal) pagkatapos i-mutilate yung anak mo at ni-rape? I’m sorry? Iiyak siya magso-sorry? Hindi pwede, karumal dumal e. Anong gagawin mo? Katulad nitong mga pumapatay sa mga kabataan natin at kabataan ng ibang bansa na high scale drug trafficking, paano yun sorry na lang pagkatapos?” Sotto also urged Malacañang to work for the strengthening of the prosecution and further improvement of law enforcement to deter crimes. He said the weak justice system should not be made a reason to block the revival of capital punishment. “Kaninong kasalanam na mahina ang justice system? Di ba sa prosecution yun? Sa Kongreso ba yun o sa taumbayan? Hindi, sa executive department yun kaya palakasin natin ang prosecution, pahusayin natin ang enforcement,” said Sotto. Presidential Communications Operations head Herminio Coloma Jr earlier said one of the President’s reservations in the reimposition of capital punishment was the weak justice system in the country. “If the justice system is flawed, delikado iyong mga mapaparusahan na inosente, di ba? Iyon iyong isa sa mga concerns,” Coloman said, adding that reforms are still ongoing and law enforcers remain vigilant against criminal elements.

ectic family schedules don’t have to get in the way of serving up tasty and healthy weeknight dinners, explains leading nutrition expert, cookbook author and television star Ellie Krieger, author of “Weeknight Wonders: Delicious, Healthy Dinners in 30 Minutes or Less. Krieger notes that pairing the unique sweetness of healthy, fresh pears with savory proteins like pork or chicken makes for a satisfying supper that can be made in a snap. “Pears are a perfect pick for weeknight dinners, says Krieger. “Their distinctive flavor goes well in savory main dishes that are simple to make and will be enjoyed by the whole family. Krieger’s recipe for Pork Chops with Pears in Port Wine Sauce from her new “Weeknight Wonders cookbook will help add variety to the weeknight dinner routine, as will these other suppertime recipes that feature juicy USA Pears. For more great recipe ideas, visit www. usapears.org.
Pork Chops with Pears in Port Wine Sauce Makes 4 Servings 3 large firm-ripe USA Pears, such as Bartlett or Anjou Cooking spray 4 1/2-pound center-cut bone-in pork loin chops (about 3/4 inch thick) 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black
pepper 3/4 cup lowsodium chicken broth 3/4 cup tawny port wine 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard Peel and core the pears, then slice them into 1/2-inch-thick slices. Spray a large nonstick skillet with cooking spray and preheat over mediumhigh heat. Add the pears and cook, stirring once or twice, until warmed and slightly softened but they still retain their shape, 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the pears to a plate. Season the pork chops with the salt and pepper. Spray the skillet with cooking spray again, then add the pork chops and cook until just slightly blush in the center, 4 to 5 minutes per side. Transfer to a second plate and cover to keep warm. Add the broth and port to the skillet, raise the heat to high, and cook until the liquid is reduced by about half, 5 to 6 minutes. Stir in the mustard and whisk until dissolved, then return the pears to the pan and stir to combine. Spoon the sauce over the chops and serve. Japanese bra only unhooks for true love, say makers (TOKYO-AFP) – In a long-awaited fusion between hot-blooded hormones and cold-headed engineering, a Japanese lingerie company has produced a bra they claim will only unlock when the wearer is really in love. The “True Love Tester” uses sensors and a special gadget linked to a mobile device to analyze the pattern and speed of the user’s heart beat in the heat of the moment. If the app determines the woman’s feelings are for real, the clasp at the front pops open to allow matters between lovers to take their course. The bra is a gimmick by lingerie brand Ravijour, which says it is not for sale, but forms part of a publicity campaign for the marque’s 10th anniversary. “We wanted to do something that wouldn’t just appeal to people who wear our products, but also to lift the romantic mood between men and women,” spokes-
woman Yuka Tamura said. In a promotional video, viewers are shown how the glittering gold lame bra conceals sensors placed inside the cup, which send wireless signals to a smartphone. The app studies the heart’s changing pattern and the duration of the change, which the makers say will allow it to distinguish between activities as diverse as jogging and flirting, where a woman’s requirements of her bra are quite distinct. In a promotional video clip, a toned model stands in a dimly lit studio wearing only her underwear, which keeps the insistent alpha male at bay because he cannot unhook the clasp. It is “a revolutionary bra that knows truly how women This handout picture released by Japan’s lingerie maker Ravijour feel,” the video says. on January 23, 2014 shows a high-tech bra “True Love Tester” The video can be seen at:https://www.ravijour.com/ equipped with a special mechanical hook on its center in Tokyo. anniversary/moodup ©AFP PHOTO / RAVIJOUR
Using peanuts to cure allergy PARIS, January 30, 2014 (AFP) – Doctors said Thursday they could treat peanut allergy by feeding children the very thing their bodies reject, so building tolerance that could save a life in case of accidential ingestion. Small doses of peanut powder taken over several months seemed to induce tolerance in children with the potentially deadly allergy, a research team wrote Wednesday in The Lancet medical journal. After six months of treatment, dubbed oral immunotherapy or OIT, 84-91 percent of the children in a trial could safely tolerate daily doses of 800 mg (0.03 ounces) of peanut powder – the equivalent of about
five peanuts, wrote the team. This was 25 times the amount they could tolerate before the therapy, and much larger than any accidental dose is likely to ever be. “The treatment allowed children with all severities of peanut allergy to eat large quantities of peanuts, well above the levels found in contaminated snacks and meals, freeing them and their parents from the fear of a potentially life threatening allergic reaction,” said study leader Andrew Clark from Cambridge University Hospitals. “The families involved in this study say that it has changed their lives dramatically.”
The trial involved 99 allergic children aged seven to sixteen. One in five of the kids receiving OIT reported “adverse events” – mostly mild itching of the mouth, the authors said. They stressed that people should not try the treatment at home as more research was needed. Peanut allergy affects about one in fifty children and is the most common cause of fatal food allergy reactions, said a press statement. About 10 million people around the world are allergic to peanuts. Symptoms vary from mild to severe, from swollen lips or shortness of breath to anaphylactic shock, which can be fatal. While “exceptionally promising”, the method remains experimental, Matthew
Greenhawt from the University of Michigan Food Allergy Center wrote in a comment also carried by The Lancet. “It is unknown if OIT can produce lasting tolerance,” he wrote.

Relief for those who cannot adjust status in US (Paul Choi is an immigration attorney and professor of law located at 5900 Sepulved Blvd. Ste. 303, Sherman Oaks, CA 91411. Atty Choi will answer all questions regarding immigration and naturalization for free. Address questions to pchoi@ pchoilaw.com or telephone 818 714-2226. Atty Choi is pleased to announce that his administrator is Philip Abramowitz .) Question: I have read in your columns that you are willing to answer all questions regarding U.S. are persons who entered without visas, immigration and naturalization for free. (illegal entry), persons who were in transit I entered the U.S. as a crewman to join without a visa and entered the U.S. instead a cruise ship in Miami five years ago. I of changing planes, crewman who came to never joined the ship and I just decided to join a ship on a crewman’s visa, and those stay here. I think this is called “jumping who cannot prove they entered the U.S. ship. Three years ago, I married a U.S. because they lost all their proof of entry citizen and we tried to file for adjustment and the USCIS cannot locate their arrival of status so I could get my work permit and documents. The only previous exception to greencard. I went to a few attorneys who this rule is if you qualified for the benefits told me that I was not eligible because I of section 245i of the Immigration Act by entered as a crewman. Is this true? They having a petition or labor certification filed told me that I had to go back to the Philip- for you before April 30, 2001, by a relative pines and apply for my immigrant visa in or employer. Manila but that I needed a waiver there Those who entered as crewman and the because I entered as a crewman. They told like, are generally not eligible to adjust me that if the waiver was not granted by the status here so these persons must, apply for U.S. Embassy in Manila, I would be stuck their immigrant visas at the U.S. Consulate in the Philippines for ten years. I could in their home country. The problem has not believe it so I never applied. I heard been that persons who have remained in from the news that there was a recent law the U.S. for more than six months illegally, signed by the President where I can get my trigger the 3 or 10 year bar when they greencard now. Is this true? depart the U.S. to obtain their visa in their Answer: I understand your concerns home country. In order to get around this very well. Established law states that terrible obstacle the visa applicant needs to certain persons cannot adjust their status in apply for a waiver of inadmissibility called the U.S.-even if they marry a U.S. citizen. a form I-601. To qualify, the applicant Among those persons who are barred from must prove that his U.S. citizen or lawful obtaining permanent residence while in the permanent resident spouse or parent (not

child,) would suffer what is called extreme hardship if he were not allowed to return after leaving the U.S. Prior to 2012 seeking a 601 waiver at a consulate abroad was a very risky proposition. First the waiver is 100% discretionary with the Immigration Service. What is considered extreme hardship is up to the adjudicating officer and there is no hard and fast rule. Secondly, under the old law, if that waiver was denied while the applicant was at the Embassy abroad, the applicant is barred from returning to the U.S. and thereby becoming stranded. Because of this immigrant visa “Russian Roulette, the USCIS changed the law making waivers of the 10 year bar less risky. This is great news. Under the law published by the USCIS last year, persons can now file their I-601 waivers in the U.S. before they travel to their interviews at the U.S. Consulates abroad. This reduces tremendously the
risk of being stranded abroad. This sort of “pre-screening process ensures that persons will not travel abroad only to have their waivers denied at the Consulates abroad. This new regulation, permits visa applicants for the very first time to file their 601 waivers in the U.S. and have the waiver approved before they go abroad. This way, the visa applicants will know in advance if it is safe to go abroad to secure their immigrant visas. Under the new law, visa applicants who are not eligible to adjust will still have to travel to their home countries to secure their immigrant visas, but for the first time ever, the process will be a whole lot safer and surer. If you have not filed for your permanent residence because you entered illegally, are a crewman or otherwise not eligible to adjust and you have a qualifying close relative you should definitely consider starting your immigrant visa process now. Westfield Santa Anita invites customers to ring in the Year of the Horse at its Second Annual Lunar New Year Celebration Arcadia, CA (January 28, 2014) – Westfield Santa Anita, the premier shopping center in the San Gabriel Valley, is ringing in Lunar New Year by hosting its second annual festival to celebrate the Year of the Horse. The event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on The Promenade. This year, Westfield Santa Anita invited partners such as the Chinese American Museum (CAM) and the Asian Pacific Community Fund (APCF) to participate in festivities surrounding Lunar New Year to further create meaningful engagement for Asian-American customers. With the success of its inaugural Lunar New Year celebration last year, Westfield Santa Anita aims to make this year’s event bigger and better. The festival on Feb. 15 will not only include live performances, fortune tellers, Chinese calligraphy demonstrations, student art displays and children’s crafts tables, but will also feature a life-sized traditional Chinese dice game where participants can win prizes from various Westfield retailers. Food and refreshments from some of the most popular
food trucks will also be available at the event. “We saw how much our customers loved our Lunar New Year event last year, and we wanted to build on that to make it an even greater celebration this year,â€? said Steve Jaffe, District Marketing Manager for Westfield Santa Anita. “The goal of our Lunar New Year celebration for this year, and beyond, is to continue to bring the community together at Westfield Santa Anita.â€? This year’s Lunar New Year dĂŠcor at the Center features a 10-foot gold horse statue, created in partnership with Santa Anita Park, to represent the Year of the Horse and Santa Anita’s legacy in horseracing. Westfield Santa Anita is also bringing back its 120-foot dragon and Chinese pagoda that were displayed last year. Additionally, in line with Lunar New Yearthemed displays, Westfield Santa Anita is providing CAM with exclusive space inside the Center to bring a part of the museum to Westfield customers. The artifacts, which will be on display in the mall’s Center Court for a limited time, will showcase traditional items
used by Chinese Americans in Los Angeles to celebrate the holiday, including lion dance costumes, festival head pieces and costume masks. “The Chinese American Museum is excited to celebrate the Lunar New Year 2014 with Westfield Santa Anita, said Steve Wong, Executive Director of CAM. “The artifacts on display are only a small sampling of over 7,500 artifacts housed at the Chinese American Museum at El Pueblo Historic Monument, in downtown Los Angeles. In the spirit of giving back to the community during the Lunar New Year, Westfield Santa Anita is also showcasing a Wishing Tree to raise funds for APCF, a network of nonprofit organizations that provide linguistically appropriate and culturally relevant programs and services to those in need. The Wishing Tree is sponsored by First General Bank, and those who make a donation to APCF will be able to hang their good “wishes for the new year on the tree. “Giving back to the community is an important part of First General Bank’s culture, said Cliff Hsu, CEO of First General Bank. “Our dollar for
dollar match up to $5,000 in donation to APCF through the Wishing Tree is a small step to raise awareness about what the community can do together to help those in need. “We are excited about this inaugural partnership with Westfield Santa Anita and for the generosity of First General Bank, added Debra Fong, Executive Director of APCF. “We are thankful for this opportunity that while we celebrate the Lunar New Year we can give generously and make a difference in our community. “We know how much Lunar New Year means to the diverse communities surrounding our Center, so we engaged our partners like the Chinese American Museum, the Asian Pacific Community Fund and Santa Anita Park to ring in the Year of the Horse with us and to set the tone for an exciting, healthy and prosperous 2014, said Jaffe. The Westfield Santa Anita Lunar New Year event will take place on Feb. 15, 2014, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on The Promenade located at 400 S. Baldwin Ave, Arcadia. The event is free and open to the public.

LOS ANGELES, Jan 29 (Mabuhay) – The lone Filipino athlete that will see action in the Winter Olympics capped his pre-Games preparation in Moscow at the Novogorsk Training Center in Khimki, a region 844 miles north of Sochi where the Winter Games will be held on February 7-23, 2014. His name is Michael Christian Martinez, and his event is the men’s figure skating singles, one of the traditional centerpiece events in the Winter Olympic Games. The men’s figure skating starts on Feb. 13, 17:00 pm onwards with competitors taking the ice with their short programs (SP). Lots will be drawn for the skating order. Freeskates (FS) are scheduled on Feb. 14 . Only the top 24 performers will advance to the freeskate. “I am confident that I will qualify in the freeskate or the final event. I had enough training days in Moscow to polish my act, Martinez told this writer. “Now, I am ready and my confidence level is high. Thanks to the great support from Filipinos all over the world. It was Victor Kudryavtsev, the Russian coach who mentored former Olympic champ Ilia Kulik, who took care of the final preparations for the Filipino’s Olympic stint. Make the freeskate; that is the realistic goal for the Filipino star figure skater. Should Martinez finish inside the top 20 in the Olympics that would be a great accomplishment in itself. In his event, he will be competing against the best and the battle-tested skaters in the world in an arena where excellence and perfection are required norms. ranked no. 29th figure skater in the world by the International Skating Union (http://www.isuresults.com/ ws/ws/wsmen.htm) as of December 30, 2013, Martinez, who is widely regarded in the skating world as one of its future stars, booked his personal best of 67.01 (short program) at the world junior championship in February last year. He finished a strong fifth in that competition. In November last year during the ISUJunior Grand Prix in Tallin, Estonia, Martinez scored 135.15 in the freeskate for a combined total of 198.82 en route to a third place finish. Both scores remain his personal bests going into the Games. Should those personal bests hold water in Sochi, Martinez could be somewhere in 18th-22nd places. the top favorites in the men’s figure skating singles – one of the centerpiece events in the Games – are three-time world champion Patrick Chan, Canada; Yuzuru Hanyu, Japan; Javier Fernandez, Spain; Dennis Ten of Kasakhstan, and ageless Evgeny Plushenko, the 2006 Olympic champion from Russia. In an interview before he left California for Russia, Martinez told this writer that finishing in the top 24 is a realistic goal for him as he will be up against jaded and seasoned skaters, veteran athletes who have been into competitive skating for a long time.“I am hoping to finish in the top 24 to qualify in the freeskate/final event. i will be competing against older, veterans and more experienced skaters, some of them are former Olympians, Martinez said. “several of these skaters had been skating even before i was born, thus it’s a very, very tough competition. Martinez also pointed out that many of these skaters are doing quad jumps consistently, while others will attempt to do quads. “In my case, my Russian coach decided not to put my quad since it’s not yet consistent
and to avoid stress on my knees and to keep me injury-free until the Olympics,â€? he said. Martinez wound up his intense training under the watchful eyes of Victor Kudryavtsev, the Russian coach who mentored former Olympic champ Ilia Kulik. In California, Martinez has two coaches – John Nicks and Ilia Kulik. With barely a week before the Games, Martinez’s mom who also acts as de facto coach told this writer that preparations, mindset, and the health of his son are upstanding. “So far so good,â€? Martinez’s mom, Teresa told this writer. “We stay indoors as much as possible. We are not taking any chances for Michael as he might get sick, especially that he is asthmatic. It is good that the training center is just beside the hotel. The temperature here dips as low as -11 Celsius.â€? Martinez is the first homegrown Filipino athlete to see action in the Winter Olympics. A tropical country, the Philippines is not expected to have winter sports athletes. In fact, the Philippines does not have a National Sports Association that handles winter game sports. Regardless, four athletes represented the Philippines in the 1972, 1988, and 1992 Winter Games, but they were second, third generation Filipino expats who grew up or lived outside the country. The Philippines’s 1972 bets Juan Cipriano and Ben Nanasca did not finish their slalom events in alpine skiing. At the 1988 Games in Calgary, Alberta, Raymund Ocampo, a FilAm luger, finished way off the leaders, while Michae Teruel, also an alpine skier, carried the PH tricolor at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. This Olympic year, yet another Fil-Am skater Christopher Caluza, vied for an Olympic slot to represent the Philippines, but he finished dead last at 34th in Skate Canada qualifier. Martinez, on the other hand, booked his Olympic ticket via the Nebelhorn Skateoff at 7th place. Among skaters seeking Olympic slots, the Filipino was third as the top four were in the skateoff just for trophies. In the case of Martinez, he was born and raised in Metro Manila, a place where people think an ice rink is a kind of popsicle, a triple axel an item inside the tool box, and figure skating as mere recreational sports. Martinez’s phenomenal skills notwithstanding, the boy soon found out that the greater odd to contend with in the sports that he loves is the cost of training expense to raise his game to the next level and eventually become a world beater. People who understand figure skating agree that with a talent like Martinez, the possibilities are limitless. In young Martinez, we could be looking at a very unlikely hero who can deliver PH’s quest for the elusive Olympic gold. But the Philippine sports establishment, which is populated by bureaucrats that are essentially politicos, are not quite responsive to the idea of raising up a real Filipino athlete who can bring home a gold medal. Meanwhile, like the real life-inspired movie “Cool Runningsâ€? where the Jamaican bobsled team had to raise funds doing armwrestling, singing on the street, and holding a kissing booth, Martinez and his supporters in Los Angeles continue to raise additional training funds dancing the zumba. MOTORING 2014 Mazda6 named ‘Car of the Year’ by Popular Mechanics IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 12, 2013 / PRNewswire/ – The completely redesigned 2014 Mazda6 mid-size sedan was today named “Car of the Year” by Popular Mechanics, an award-winning special interest magazine covering the best of today’s technologies and beyond. Combined with Skyactiv1 Technology – the umbrella term for a host of performanceoriented, fuel-saving engine, transmission, body and chassis components – this thirdgeneration Mazda6 features even more all-new groundbreaking Mazda-engineered technology. (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/ prnh/20131112/LA14987) “To be named ‘Car of the Year’ by a publication as esteemed as Popular Mechanics is as flattering as it is humbling,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president & CEO, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). “And the continued success of the 2014 Mazda6 is a testament to the brand’s ‘clean slate’ approach, where everyone from every team – R&D and design to strategy and marketing – rolled up their proverbial sleeves to answer the question ‘If we could start all over, what can we do better?’ We believe in ‘One Team, One Mazda’ and it is a proud honor to share this accolade with the entire global Mazda family.” After a year of test driving the latest automotive offerings, PM’s automotive editors and contributors judged vehicles and selected the Car of the Year for its
overall excellence and their top 10 choices by segment. The Car of the Year is the vehicle that best exemplifies qualities that are most important to Popular Mechanicsreaders: affordability, utility, fuel efficiency, performance, innovation and bold design. The Skyactiv family of engines garnered an Automotive Excellence Award last year in the “Technical Innovation” bonus category. “At Popular Mechanics, we love it when bold engineering and great design come together,” said Jim Meigs, editor-inchief, Popular Mechanics. “The Mazda6 really impressed us with how well it delivers so many things modern car owners want: great mileage, fun road-handling, upscale features and looks – and remarkable value.” From the global debut of the capacitorbased regenerative engine braking system i-ELOOP to the North American introductions of the front collision-detecting Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system and Skyactiv -D 2.2-liter clean diesel engine, the 2014 Mazda6 has been the dynamic brand ambassador to shake up the mid-size segment stasis by turning its stifled amps to 11. By offering unmatched driving capability, excellent performance, striking design, exceptional safety and best-in-class highway fuel economy (40 MPG), this four-door family sedan thrives on surpassing expectations. Available in three trim levels – Sport, Touring and Grand Touring – all Mazda6

vehicles are currently fitted with a Skyactiv -G 2.5-liter gasoline engine, which can be paired with a choice of transmissions: the Skyactiv -MT six-speed manual or SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic. Featuring the lean, muscular character lines of the Kodo “Soul of Motion” design language, the 2014 Mazda6 touts 184 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 185 lb-ft of torque at 3,250 rpm. Shapely and sophisticated, Mazda6 also offers a best-in-class coefficient of drag as low as 0.26 (Grand Touring only) as well as an impressive EPA-rated fuel efficiency of 25 city/37 highway/29 combined MPG
when equipped with the standard manual transmission. Automatic-equipped vehicles see fuel economy increased to an EPAestimate rating of 26 city/38 highway/30 combined. When coupled with i-Eloop, which is part of the Technology Package (Grand Touring only), fuel economy is a best-in-class EPA rating of 28 city/40 highway/32 combined MPG. The Skyactiv-D 2.2L engine is expected to go on sale in North America in late spring of 2014. Final specifications and packaging information of the diesel engine and trim combinations will be announced closer to its on-sale date.

Fiat changes name, disappoints with profits MILAN, January 29, 2014 (AFP) – Italian car giant Fiat announced on Wednesday it was changing its name after completing the purchase of US automaker Chrysler to “Fiat Chrysler Automobiles”, but posted disappointing 2013 results. Fiat chairman John Elkann said the name change heralded “a new chapter”. “A journey that started over a decade ago, as Fiat sought to ensure its place in an increasingly complex marketplace, has brought together two organisations each with a great history in the automotive industry and different but complementary geographic strengths,” he said. “FCA allows us to face the future with a renewed sense of purpose and vigor,” he added. The group statement said: “In order to establish a true peer to the major global automotive groups, in both scale and capital market appeal, the Board has decided to establish Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V., organized in the Netherlands, as the parent company of the Group.” The company said shares would be listed in New York and Milan and Fiat shareholders would receive one FCA common share for each Fiat share they hold. FCA will be resident in the UK for tax purposes. “Today is one of the most important days in my career at Fiat and Chrysler,” Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne was quoted as saying. “We have worked tenaciously and single-mindedly to transform differences into strengths and break down barriers of nationalistic or cultural resistance,” he said. The FCA will “continue with the same mission, including manufacturing plants in Italy and elsewhere around the globe, with no impact on headcount,” said the group, calming concerns that the car maker would abandon Italy. The group said it expected to present a long-term business plan at the start of May 2014. Fiat completed the purchase of Chrysler this month in a $4.35-billion (3.21 billion euros) transaction after a five-year merger, to create the world’s seventh biggest auto group. However, earlier on Wednesday Fiat reported 2013 results which were below analysts expectations and said it would be waiving dividends, causing shares in the group to plummet.

Tesla cars to have same base price in China as US SHANGHAI, January 24, 2014 (AFP) – Electric carmaker Tesla Motors said its flagship vehicle will have the same pre-tax price in China as in the US, after Chinese media criticised foreign companies for charging higher prices in the country. The upstart US manufacturer’s Model S battery-powered car sells for $81,070 in the US and the company will receive the same sum for it in China, the world’s biggest auto market. Nonetheless the sticker price for the premium car will start from 734,000 yuan ($121,370), with the difference accounted for by $36,700 in taxes imposed by the Chinese government and shipping costs of $3,600, it said. Tesla’s openness over its pricing, which included an item-by-item breakdown of how it was reached, follows official moves and campaigns by state-run media against foreign companies for high prices in industries ranging from infant formula to pharmaceutical products. Last year, state broadcaster CCTV blasted Tata Motors’ Land Rover and
Volkswagen’s Audi over higher prices in China than elsewhere. Tesla said the Chinese market could have absorbed a higher price for its cars and attacked rivals for charging more. “The price of a Model S in China is the same as the price of a Model S in the US, adding only unavoidable taxes, customs duties and transportation costs,” Tesla said in the statement. “If we were to follow standard industry practice, we could get away with charging twice as much for the Model S in China as we do in the US,” it said. “We know that our competitors will try to convince Chinese consumers that our relatively lower price tag means the Model S is a lesser car, when the real reason their car costs more is that they make double the profit per car in China compared to the United States or Europe,” it added. Foreign brand vehicles have performed well in the China market, helped by perceptions of higher quality and better recognition, making the country a critical market for global automakers.

Nissan said it sold 5.1 million units globally in 2013, a 3.3 percent rise from a year ago, while the French automaker earlier reported that it sold 2.63 million vehicles in 2013. The group sold a total of 8.3 million vehicles last year, including sales by Russian affiliate AvtoVAZ, putting it behind top three automakers Toyota,

Last week, Toyota said it sold a record 9.98 million vehicles in 2013, its highest-ever annual sales volume, thanks to a weaker yen as well as strong demand in the United States and China, which is now the world’s biggest car market. The Camry sedan and Prius hybrid maker beat US-based GM, which sold 9.71 million cars last year, while Volkswagen logged annual sales of 9.5 million units. The figures come after Japan’s Nikkei business daily reported that Nissan and Renault plan to boost their alliance by bringing together production as well as research and development in a bid to save about $3.8 billion annually. Despite their close links – Renault is the Japanese automaker’s biggest shareholder and they are both chaired by Carlos Ghosn – the pair have operated largely independently of each other, except on parts procurement and engine development.

profit doubles to $1.56-B in Q3 TOKYO, January 31, 2014 (AFP) – Honda said Friday net profit doubled to $1.56 billion in the three months to December, thanks to brisk global sales and a weaker yen. Net profit for October-December rose to 160.7 billion yen ($1.56 billion), while revenue rose 24.5 percent to 3.02 trillion yen in the quarter. The results were “mainly due to a rise in automobile and motorcycle net sales as well as the positive impact of foreign exchange effects”, the company said. A sharp decline in the yen this financial year has boosted profitability at major Japanese exporters, including Honda rivals Toyota and Nissan. For the nine months to December, Japan’s third-largest automaker logged 403.60 billion yen in net profit, up nearly 40 percent from the same period the previous year. Revenue for the three quarters rose 23 percent, with its sales in North America up 30 percent year-on-year owing to healthy sales of four-wheeled vehicles, it said. Honda also enjoyed good sales in the motorbike business in Asia, where profit was up more than 50 percent from a year ago. Recovery in North America’s automobile sales was particularly tangible in the latest three months, with profit up 85 percent year on year, the company said. “Like other Japanese carmakers, Honda has enjoyed the positive impact of a weak yen for the period. The forex impact is significant,” Tatsuya Mizuno, auto analyst at Mizuno Credit Advisory, told AFP. “But the weak yen trend appears uncertain now. It will be a major risk element if the trend reverses.” One negative factor that the Japanese economy is expecting is a consumption tax hike slated for April. “The impact of the consumption tax hike on the industry is quite uncertain. The market is paying close attention to it,” Mizuno said. Japanese industry has benefited from the big-spending and easy-money policies of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with huge easing measures from the premier’s handpicked team at the Bank of Japan helping push down the currency.
