Still undecided, but Grace Poe gets endorsements MANILA, July 22 (Mabuhay) – Senator Grace Poe on Thursday thanked leaders of the Nacionalista Party and the Nationalist People’s Coalition who expressed support for her if she decides to run for President in 2016. But Poe said as of now, she has not talked to the leadership of the two parties about the upcoming elections. “As a senator I have maintained good working relationship with NPC and NP stalwarts in pursuing meaningful bills but we have not discussed... 2016,” Poe said in a text message.
“Still I appreciate such vote of confidence and expression of support by NPC and NP in case I decide to pursue any political plans in the near future,” she said. The NP and NPC are part of the coalition the Aquino administration’s Liberal Party formed during the 2013 elections. Poe, an independent, ran as a guest candidate of the administration coalition then and topped the senatorial elections. Poe remains uncertain whether or not she would seek the presidency in 2016. “Kasalukuyan ko pa ring sinusuri at See STILL UNDECIDED, page 8
Chris Brown cleared to leave Philippines after bizarre appeals By Joel GUINTO
Manila, Philippines (AFP) Friday 7/24/2015 Grammy-winning hip-hop star Chris Brown was cleared to leave the Philippines late Friday, an official said, after he was temporarily barred from exiting the country over a row with a powerful religious sect. The 26-year-old American – who was stuck in Manila for two days -- secured an emigration clearance certificate (ECC) stating he has no legal obligations in the Southeast Asian country and was free to leave, immigration spokeswoman Elaine Tan said. “ECC was issued... today,” Tan said in a text message to AFP. In a brief video posted to his official Twitter feed Friday night an exuberant Brown is seen walking towards a plane, apparently headed to his next gig in Macau. “Manila it was fun, love y’all man,” the rapper says. “If you’re free to come to Macau -- party tonight!” Brown, who performed to a packed crowd at a Manila arena on Tuesday, was barred from leaving the Philippines after the politically-connected Christian group See CHRIS BROWN, page 8

46 percent of Pinoys think Aquino’s corruption drive is a failure MANILA, July 22 (Mabuhay) – Fortysix percent of Filipinos believe President Benigno Aquino III failed in fulfilling his campaign promise of curbing corruption in the government during his term, a poll conducted by Radyo Veritas has revealed. The survey, conducted between March to April 2015, showed only 13 percent of Filipinos think Aquino succeeded in fighting corruption in the government. More than four in 10 Filipinos, or 41 percent, however, are uncertain whether
the Aquino administration’s anti-corruption programs were effective. The poll, called the Veritas Truth Survey, was conducted using face-to-face interviews with 1,200 respondents randomly chosen nationwide. The survey had a margin of error of plus/minus 3 percent. Will I lose my home if I file for bankruptcy? Americans are still filing bankruptcy in record numbers, and with good reason. The economic downturn, including the fall of housing prices and the increase in unemployment has wrecked havoc on our finances. The truth is, that in many cases, bankruptcy is a wise decision for many, since it wipes away debt and interest payments that would take years to pay off, if you are only making minimum payments. Unfortunately, many people do not file bankruptcy because of misinformation. One of the most com- 12 is for family farmers. DOJ eyes probe of Iglesia ‘abductions’ MANILA, July 24 (Mabuhay) – The Department of Justice on Friday vowed to investigate reports of alleged abductions and torture of ministers of the Iglesia ni Cristo amid a public squabble among the leadership of the religious sect. Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said she has already ordered the National Bureau of Investigation to verify and validate reports that some INC ministers not loyal to the Sanggunian have been abducted or placed under house arrest. “Hindi pwede itong balewalain...If this is true, these are criminal offenses. Kailangan ho imbestigahan ng maayos,” she said. Isaias Samson Jr., a second-generation INC minister, earlier confirmed that at least 10 INC ministers were kidnapped by the religious group and held in different locations. At least one minister, Lowell Menorca II, was being held at the city jail in Dasmariñas, Cavite province. He told media that he and his family were held captive in their own home in Tierra Bella subdivision behind the INC headquarters for a week. He said he and his family escaped after he told his armed guards that he wanted to go to church. De Lima noted the expulsion of Angel Manalo and Tenny Manalo, the brother and mother of current INC Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo, from the INC is something internal to the organization. Tenny and Angel had earlier issued a YouTube video asking the INC brethren for help after receiving threats from fellow INC members. De Lima said allegations that the INC leadership is mismanaging its funds is an internal matter for the religious group. “We consider these the private funds of the Iglesia,” she said. However, the justice secretary said authorities cannot turn a blind eye to reports of people putting up signs, saying they were being held hostage.

US-based Iglecia members remain ‘intact’ despite crisis in PHL By Abner Galino
IGLESIA ni Cristo (INC) expatriates, particularly here in Los Angeles, have remained intact amid a developing crisis within the hierarchy of the biggest and most powerful home-grown church in the Philippines. A devout INC member, Erwin Arrieta, declared that the church would even become stronger after the crisis was over. “Ang turo hindi naman nag-iiba, yun pa rin. Kaya kahit ano man ang problema, hindi maaapektuhan ang simbahan lalo pang titibay. (The doctrine remains the same. The church will remain strong despite the crisis.),” Arrieta explained. Arrieta added that the incident in Manila even validates the fidelity of the INC church to its doctrine. “Pinapakita lang na walang sinisino ang simbahan. Pag lumabag ka sa patakaran,
ititiwalag ka kahit na sino ka pa,” Arrieta pointed out. Arrieta is part of the INC southern California district which is composed of about 47 congregations distributed through the states of Nevada, Utah and Arizona. Another INC member who requested anonymity, agreed with the assessment of Arrieta. According to her, INC members are focused on the teachings of the church and not on the personalities or people that run it. She expressed sadness over the turn of events though. “Siyempre nalulungkot tayo para sa kanila, mga kapatid sila at ina ni Ka Eduardo,” she added. The source said that she welcomes a thorough probe on the corruption and abuse allegations made by Ka Angel Manalo, the brother of INC Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo, and other ranking ministers. According to her, the INC always takes effort to find consensus within its ranks and she believes that the church would seriously take actions to address the issues. Another INC member, who also refused to be named, said the dispute between the ranking members of the church has been going on for some time. He revealed that
the issues raised by the expelled members were earnestly being discussed in the leadership of each of the church’s congregations here in the US for some time already before they became public. Meanwhile, an expelled member of the INC also predicted that the crisis would not likely affect the strength of the church. She discounted the possibility of a major split in the INC. “Galing ako doon so alam ko kung gaano katibay ang paniniwala nila sa simbahan nila. Kaya sa palagay ko, dadaan lang yan,” she added. The source has joined a non-denominational church, popularly known as evangelicals, after she was expelled. “I am trying to be spiritual without being religious,” she said. Balita Weekend has been trying to get an official statement from any of the INC congregations here in southern California but has been unsuccessful. On Thursday (Manila time), INC Executive Minister Ka Eduardo has expelled his brothers, sister and mother for allegedly causing division in the church and moving to take over the leadership of the organization.
Eduardo said the crisis was brought about by doctrinal differences and denied the allegations of corruption. Those who were expelled were Cristina Villanueva Manalo (mother of Eduardo and known as Ka Tenny), Felix Nathaniel Manalo, Marco Eraño Manalo, and Lolita Manalo Hernandez. The dispute exploded into public awareness when Ka Angel and Ka Tenny published a video on the internet asking for help, claiming their lives were in danger. The two also claimed that some INC ministers had been abducted. The public had an impression that they were being held by unknown armed group at the family residence at the back of the INC main church in Quezon Quezon City. However, it turned out that it weas not the case when officials of the Quezon City police came to investigate. Ka Angel later met the press at the gate of the INC compound and explained that they were not challenging the authority of his brother but were simply protesting the alleged doctrinal violations, abuses and corruption of the people who surround the INC executive minister.
Aquino hits back at ‘staunchest critic’ MANILA, July 21 (Mabuhay) -President Benigno Aquino III on Tuesday took a snipe at his “staunchest critic” as he basked in the glory of passing the Philippine Competition Act and a liberalized Cabotage Law. At the conclusion of his speech following his signing of the laws that seek to promote competition in local markets and industries, the President challenged his critic to prove that members of Congress were not doing their jobs. “Sige, maghanap ka ng pruweba na hindi talaga naglilingkod ang ating mga kinatawan sa parehong kapulungan,” (Go
ahead, look for proof that our representatives from both houses of Congress are not serving the people) Aquino said, shouting out to his “pinakamatinding kritiko.” Aquino did not name the critic but observers saw him referring to Vice President Jejomar Binay, who has been trading barbs with administration officials over the past weeks. Binay, who resigned from Aquino’s Cabinet last month, claims that he was being badly treated by administration allies, some of whom have even urged Congress to impeach him as vice president. In previous speeches and interviews,
Binay questioned the government’s actions and plans, irking some administration officials and leading the President to ask why he failed to propose solutions when he was still a Cabinet member. In his speech, Aquino thanked senators and congressmen for working on the Competition Act and on amendments to the Cabotage Law. The Competition Act, which languished in Congress for 20 years, bans anti-competitive mergers, acquisitions and agreements, which allow an entity to have a dominant position in an industry. Penalties for violating the law may reach P250 million.

US navy rescues 11 Pinoy fishermen from sinking boat Manila, Philippines (AFP) Monday 7/20/2015 – A US navy ship has rescued 11 Filipino fishermen after monsoon rains caused their boat to capsize in the South China Sea, the American embassy and provincial officials in the Philippines said. A photograph of Sunday’s rescue released by the US embassy showed several of the fishermen on the upper deck of their boat with just the bow and tail still visible above water. The USNS Impeccable, an ocean surveillance ship, was sailing to the northern Philippine port of Subic Bay when its crew saw the partially submerged boat in the
water, a US embassy statement said. The fishermen had sailed from the northern coastal town of Infanta on July 14 before bad weather struck on Sunday morning, leading their boat to capsize, Juvin Solis of the provincial disaster office told AFP. “They were drifting to the southwest when the US vessel arrived and rescued them a few hours later,” Solis added. Days of monsoon rains have left five people dead and forced about 4,000 people to flee their homes due to flooding and landslides in the northern Philippines, civil defense officers said.
MANILA, July 22 (Mabuhay) – Coconut farmers are pushing for the passage of a law facilitating the use of the coconut levy fund, now estimated at P93 billion, before President Benigno Aquino III steps down from Malacañang next year. In a press briefing on Thursday, the Kilusan para sa Ugnayan ng mga Samahang Magniniyog called on President Benigno Aquino III to certify as urgent the proposed Coconut Farmers’ Trust Fund. Certifying the bill would allow the Senate and the House of Representatives to prioritize and fast track the passage of the proposed law. “Ang inaasahan namin ngayon sa SONA (State of the Nation Address), maririning namin ang kanyang pangako
Last month, however, the Supreme Court stopped the implementation of two executive orders, 179 and 180, by President Benigno Aquino III covering the coco levy fund and ordered Malacañang to comment on the petition filed by the Confederation of Coconut Farmers Organization. In EO 180, Aquino directed the concerned agencies to secure the government’s rights and interests when it comes to the coco levy assets.
PHL pleased at US help recovering Napoles’ loot MANILA, July 18 (Mabuhay) – Malacañang on Saturday welcomed the United States government’s help in recovering the alleged ill-gotten wealth of suspected pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Napoles. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte noted the Philippines enjoys good working relations with the United States. “Siyempre we welcome all efforts especially when it comes to matters like this. Maganda ang working relations (natin) with (the US),” she said on state-run dzRB radio. Valte also noted the US is fast in initiating forfeiture proceedings. The US Department of Justice had filed a civil forfeiture complaint against Napoles. It is seeking to recover some $12.5 million in assets “that derive from bribery and kickback schemes in the Philippines spanning nearly a decade.” Napoles faces plunder charges over the multibillion-peso pork barrel scam involving some lawmakers. US seeks to seize assets of woman in Philippines scam last week in Washington, The US Justice Department moved to seize $12.5 million in assets of Janet Napoles, a businesswoman at the center of a broad Philippines corruption scandal dubbed the “pork barrel scam”. The department filed a civil forfeiture complaint to gain control of assets including a swank Los Angeles condominium, a motel near Disneyland, and a Porsche Boxster that Napoles bought for a daughter allegedly with money intended for development and disaster relief.

Is your financial boat sinking? Here’s how you can avoid a disaster… In 1912, the sinking of the mighty ship called the “Titanic” sent 1,516 people to a watery grave. The “Titanic”, first thought to be unsinkable, sank to the bottom of the ocean. Everyone was shocked because no one thought that this was possible. Could this tragedy have been avoided? The answer is YES. It was later discovered that 3 days before the terrible accident, the ship’s operator received the first message that gigantic icebergs were on the impending danger but the same thing hapship’s path. They heard that
the Titanic was unsinkable! Testimony later revealed that the lifeboats could actually have saved 500 more passengers. The people who died unnecessarily from the Titanic disaster were locked into wrong thinking because they simply followed the crowd and refused to exercise independent thinking. It was the blind leading the blind. In my opinion, this type of wrong thinking is what keeps a lot of people trapped in their financial problems. They don’t heed the warnings even when it is clear that they are headed toward a danger zone. They think that their ship is unsinkable as long as they can continue to borrow to keep them afloat (pardon the pun). And even as they start to sink, they refuse to get help because they are trapped in their old way of thinking. How can you learn from this senseless tragedy? Pay attention to what I’m saying! Are you feeling a sense of emergency about your current financial situation? Remember that dealing with debt problems often require changing the way you think. After all, if your old way of thinking is what brought you to your present circumstances
in the first place, isn’t this an indication that solving your problem requires having a different mindset? If you are in debt, don’t just be a follower or you may be headed toward failure and disaster. Wrong thinking makes you reactive and vulnerable. To change your situation and your life, you need a change of perspective. Change your thinking and you can change your life for the better. If you’re in debt, it’s not the end of the world. SCE to expedite Long Beach outage customer claims SCE President Pedro Pizarro announces that a $100 bill credit will be given to those customers who were without power for more than 24 hours By Mary Ann Milbourn, Southern California Edison July 21, 2015 – Southern California Edison (SCE) will expedite its response to claims by customers who suffered an extended time without power during last week’s Long Beach outage, SCE President Pedro Pizarro said Tuesday. In addition, he said SCE will provide a $100 bill credit to those customers who were without power for more than 24 hours. “Please allow me to apologize for the extent and duration of the outage we experienced into this past weekend,” Pizarro told the Long Beach City Council at its meeting Tuesday. “I recognize the great
inconvenience and concern this raised, not just for our residential and commercial customers, but for the city government and first responders.” Pizarro said SCE will review the merits of each customer’s claim and provide a response within 30 days or less from when the claim is received. Due to the billing cycles, customers will see the $100 credit in their next bill or the one after it. “We hope this demonstrates our commitment to our customers,” Pizarro said. “I am incredibly proud of the response - the response from the city and the community and particularly the technicians at Edison who are doing really hard work,” said Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia. The outages began at 3:08 p.m. Wednesday in downtown Long Beach. Power for most customers was restored by late Friday,
Aquino inspects project to make Angat Dam more quake-ready NORZAGARAY, Bulacan, July 22 (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III on Wednesday inspected here a project to strengthen the Angat Dam, which is at risk of being damaged by a powerful quake caused by movement of the West Valley Fault. Aquino was joined by Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson and Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima during the inspection. The P5.72-billion project involves raising the dam’s core by 1.2 meters, and
widening the dam’s base and downstream slope. It is expected to be completed by 2017. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS) earlier warned that the West Valley Fault may be active, and may affect a local fault located 200 meters east of Angat Dam’s main dyke. The 47-year-old dam supplies water to 97 percent of Metro Manila households, and irrigates 25,000 hectares of farm lands in Bulacan and Pampanga. (MNS)

however, a small number of residents and businesses were without electricity until Sunday afternoon. SCE has not determined the cause of the outages. They appear to be the result of failure of equipment in the underground system in the downtown area where several underground vaults were damaged. Underground systems are more difficult to evaluate, test and repair than overhead wires. Pizarro noted that the extensive damage to the equipment caused by the fires on Wednesday, coupled with the fact that the equipment is located underground, complicated the restoration efforts. “We are conducting a thorough evaluation of the outage and its cause,” he said. Customers can file a claim online, via mail at P.O. Box 900, Rosemead, CA 91770, by email toclaims@SCE.com or by fax at 626-569-2573. The claim informa-
tion is in English, Spanish, Chinese, Cambodian and Vietnamese. Get the latest information at the SCE website, Twitter and Facebook pages. Here are some important safety tips to remember for outages: – Watch for traffic signals that may be out. Approach those intersections as fourway stops. – Make sure you have a battery-operated radio and flashlights. Check the batteries to make sure they’re fresh. Use flashlights for lighting during a power outage. Do not use candles because they pose a significant fire hazard. – If you use a generator, place it outdoors and plug individual appliances directly into the generator, using a heavy-duty extension cord. Connecting generators directly to household circuits creates “backfeed,” which is dangerous to repair crews.

But Poe said those kinds of perceptions “do not really put added pressure on me.” “While I consult my family and close friends when necessary, I am and have always been independent in deciding on important matters,’ she said in another text message on Wednesday. “What puts pressure on me is the matter of whether what I finally decide on is the right one for our country,” she added.

China, which uses the so-called “ninedash line” to assert its claim over the almost the entire South China Sea, has refused to participate in the arbitration proceedings. ‘Pursue case to its logical conclusion’ Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose also stood firm on pursuing arbitration proceedings to solve the territorial row between the Philippines and China. “The Philippines is determined to pursue the arbitration case to its logical conclusion,” Jose said in a separate text message.

ment’s public affairs chief. The Armed Forces of the Philippines “will use portions of Subic for the new assets coming in like the FA-50 (jets) and the new vessels that are arriving,” Andolong told AFP. “They (the Subic facilities) are ideal: it has a deep-water port, the runways are perfect for the FA-50,” he added. Manila said last week it would reopen Subic Bay – one of the US’s largest overseas bases until it was shut down more than two decades ago – and station Filipino military assets there for the first time. Andolong said the military has leased part of Subic Bay for 15 years and plans to use it as a base for new equipment that will be bought over the next few years as part of a modernization program. The first pair of a dozen FA-50 fighter jets are scheduled to be delivered this year and the other 10 will arrive within two years, he added. The military is still evaluating from where to acquire two new frigates. Subic Bay currently serves as a commercial port and tourist site facing onto
the South China Sea where China is locked in a dispute with the Philippines as well as Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam and Taiwan over conflicting territorial claims. Andolong said the South China Sea dispute was “one of the considerations that was envisioned when the (lease agreement) was signed”. He also said the “proximity” to Scarborough Shoal – a rich fishing ground that was occupied by Chinese ships after a standoff with the Philippines in 2012 – was another. The Philippines has been building up its weak military and improving defense ties with close ally the US as its territorial dispute with China has increased. Andolong said US ships could continue to make port calls and hold military exercises there as they have been doing in recent years, but brushed aside speculation Subic would become a US base again. Last year, Manila signed an agreement giving the United States more access to Filipino military facilities, but the deal has been postponed because of a legal challenge now being heard by the Supreme Court.

Jinggoy seeks court permission to visit ailing mother-in-law MANILA, July 22 (Mabuhay) – Sen. Jinggoy Estrada on Wednesday filed before the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division an urgent motion to visit his mother-in-law, Estelita Vitug, at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City. In an urgent motion, Estrada, through his lawyers Noel Malaya, asked the Fifth Division to allow him to leave detention for two to three hours on Wednesday or Thursday to visit his mother-in-law, who is in critical condition after suffering strokes on Sunday (July 19) and Tuesday (July 21). Vitug is currently confined at the intensive care unit of the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City. “Accused-movant wishes to see and visit his mother-in-law Ms. Estelita Vitug and to be with his wife, for marital support, and the family of the Vitugs, at this critical condition of their mother, Estrada said in his three-page motion. “Two to three hours pass from his present place of detention would be sufficient time for this purpose, Estrada added. In a short oral argument Wednesday morning, Malaya pleaded to the court to resolve the motion as soon as possible “due to the urgency of the matter. The prosecution, meanwhile, objected against the motion, saying that a detention prisoner should not be accorded the rights and privileges of a free man as it would set a “bad precedent and would be a “mockery of justice. The prosecution also said that the defense failed to establish the urgency and necessity of allowing Estrada to leave detention as there was no proof attached in the motion that would show Vitug is in critical condition. This prompted Fifth Division chairman Associate Justice Roland Jurado to direct Malaya to submit within the day a medical certificate from the hospital that would substantiate the senator’s motion. Estrada, in his motion, assured the court
that should his request be granted, he will comply with all the security measures to be set by the court and the Philippine National Police (PNP). He said he will shoulder all the costs that may be incurred from his transportation to and from the hospital. Estrada is currently detained at the PNP Custodial Center in Camp Crame, Quezon City, for plunder and graft charges in connection with his alleged involvement in the pork barrel scam. His petition to post bail, which he filed since July 2014, is being heard at the Fifth Division.(MNS)
The BAP determined that the state court judgment did not include a finding equivalent to willfulness as required for Section 523(a)(6) non-dischargeability, notwithstanding its award of punitive damages! The 9th Circuit said willfulness under Section 523(a)(6) is an exacting requirement that is satisfied when a debtor harbors “either a subjective intent to harm, or a subjective belief that harm is substantially certain. A deliberate or intentional act that leads to injury does not satisfy the willfulness standard of Section 523(a)(6). The appeals court found that the punitive damages award did not support a finding that the debtors’ conduct was willful because the award could have been based on a finding that the debtor’s conduct was reckless. The court also found that the state court judgment failed to establish the existence of an express or technical trust as required for Section 523(1)(4) non-dischargeability. Drilon: PNoy’s ‘chosen one’ known days after SONA MANILA, July 22 (Mabuhay) -President Benigno Aquino III will name his preferred successor days after delivering his last State of the Nation Address, Senate President Franklin Drilon said. In a television interview, Drilon, the ruling Liberal Party’s vice chairman, said the announcement may came between July 29 to 31, stressing that they want the public to first focus on Aquino’s swan song when he delivers his SONA on July 27. Aquino is national chairman of the administration party. This was the same remark issued by Drilon early last month when asked when the President would name his preferred successor. In the television interview, Drilon said he believes the President will endorse Interior Secretary Mar Roxas. Roxas originally wanted to seek the presidency in 2010 but gave way to then-
Sen. Aquino. Roxas lost to Vice President Jejomar Binay but has a pending electoral protest before the Presidential Electoral Tribunal. Drilon also said he expects Roxas to step down from the Cabinet if the latter will be announced as the administration bet in the 2016 polls. “I would expect him to already leave his post after that... [When] he becomes a candidate, it’s untenable for him to continue holding the post as secretary of Interior and Local Government,” he said. Drilon earlier maintained that the administration’s standard-bearer should come from within the party, amid the possibility of a team-up with independent Sen. Grace Poe. Last week, the President met with Roxas, Poe, and Sen. Francis Escudero over dinner in efforts to build a united administration thrust for 2016. No consensus was reached.
Nuns won’t sell convent to Katy Perry Los Angeles, United States (AFP) Tuesday 7/21/2015 – Katy Perry has amassed millions of fans around the world, but her failure to win over two elderly nuns is creating an unholy battle. The pop singer wants to turn a former convent into her home. The sprawling hillside Italianate complex valued at $15 million is situated near the hip Los Angeles neighborhood of Silver Lake. But two nuns are having none of it. In the latest legal salvo, the two sisters challenged the authority of the archdiocese to sell the property. The motion dated Monday accused the archdiocese of unilaterally changing the bylaws of the convent, known as the California Institute of the Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The suit said that two of the five remaining sisters, who range in age from 77 to 88, were chosen to have “sole authority to amend the institute’s bylaws, elect officers and sell the assets of the institute.” Perry has visited the nuns, reportedly singing for them and telling them that she hopes to live on the property with her mother and grandmother. But the two nuns remain opposed to
the sale to Perry, who grew up in a bornagain Protestant Christian household but has become both a sex symbol and vocal advocate for gay rights. Perry’s hits include sultry numbers such as “I Kissed a Girl” and “Teenage Dream.” Sister Rita Callanan, 77, recently told the Los Angeles Times that she found Perry’s videos online and “if it’s all right to say, I wasn’t happy with any of it.” Callanan and Sister Catherine Rose Holzman, 86, instead signed to sell the property to restaurateur Dana Hollister. The archdiocese countered that Hollister offered only $44,000 upfront with no promise to make payments to the aging sisters for another three years. The archdiocese said that the three other remaining sisters supported the sale to Perry. The five sisters no longer live in the former convent, which was once the home to more than 100 nuns. “The archdiocese is committed to the care and well-being of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters now and in the future,” it said in a statement. “That is our obligation as directed by the Holy See, which will have the final approval over any sale of the property.”
US regulators back AT&T-DirecTV megadeal Washington, United States (AFP) Wednesday 7/22/2015 – US regulators said Tuesday they were set to back the $49 billion merger of AT&T and DirecTV, clearing the way for a powerful player in Internet and television. Federal Communications Commission chairman Tom Wheeler said in a statement that and order was circulated at the agency recommending approval of the mega-deal with certain conditions. Wheeler said the merger would “directly benefit consumers by bringing more competition to the broadband marketplace.” “If the conditions are approved by my colleagues, 12.5 million customer locations will have access to a competitive high-speed fiber connection,” the FCC chief said. The Justice Department said in a separate statement it would not challenge the merger. “After an extensive investigation, we concluded that the combination of AT&T’s land-based Internet and video business with DirecTV’s satellite-based video business does not pose a significant risk to competition,” said Assistant Attorney General Bill Baer of the antitrust division. “The commitments that the proposed FCC order includes, if adopted, will provide significant benefits to millions of subscribers.” The news comes three months after regulators blocked a massive merger plan of cable giants Comcast and Time Warner Cable, claiming it would concentrate too much market power in the market for high-speed Internet. But merging AT&T and DirecTV could create competition because the telecom giant and satellite broadcaster do not have the same geographical territories as the traditional cable firms. Wheeler said that if the conditions are accepted, the merged firm would boost the availability of high-speed fiber-optic connections for television, Internet and other services. “This additional build-out is about 10 times the size of AT&T’s current fiberto-the-premise deployment, increases the entire nation’s residential fiber build by more than 40 percent, and more than triples the number of metropolitan areas AT&T has announced plans to serve,” he said.

Cash out to buy another house or do home improvements Please look and listen to signs that the Real Estate Markets in some area are actually higher the highs in the mid 2000’s. Which means its close or higher than when the Real Estate Market bubbled 7-8 years ago. Major homebuilders have been slow in housing starts I believe due to stringent lending guidelines. Stocks and Bonds are still red hot this year and it might spill over to the next year. More obvious signs are that Real Estate listings in some parts of town have actually gone up, meaning if there are more listings, We have had numerous clients cashing the buyers will have more choices to buy out on their equity and looking into buyand they will look at each home and prices ing another real estate. My most valuable closer and wont jump into any thing that advise for investor is that if you are to buy is up for sale. You should also notice that now, you have to get into a property with mortgage rates are higher and will most positive cash flow. New investors always likely go higher by next year. don’t factor in payments for taxes and in-
surance and remember to always include a 15% vacancy and maintenance factor when calculating your payments. If you were to buy a Real Estate as a Residence, that might be different. If you were to put some money down and would live in it. There is really no good or bad time as long as you get a good stable loan and plan to stay for a minimum of 5 years. We have been noticing a lot of retirees that are over extending on their credit card debts, be careful those credit card rates will come up fast and bite you. You want to start to pay down debts and be debt free if you are to retire or retired. If you are a Seller, now is the time to sell and take your profits. If you are not willing to own another rental property and would like to enjoy your earnings, pay your property gains and forget about a 1031 exchange. With a 1031 exchange, you are almost force to buy anything that is available and you will have to start a new set of problems with your new conquest. Advise for investors owning multi units property, get property managers and pay them to manage the properties for you. What you may recoup on home improvements Part of the fun and excitement of owning your own home is fixing it up to match your particular taste, needs and personality. While it is common advise that one should not design or improve your home solely to sell it someday, but rather on whatever will make you most happy, here are some standard statistics on what you can expect to recoup from your various home improvement projects when you do decide to sell. Minor Kitchen Remodel: Replace cabinet doors, over and coop top, laminate counter tops, sink faucet and floor, repaint. Approximate percentage of cost re-

US existing-home sales surge in June, prices hit record Washington, United States (AFP) Wednesday 7/22/2015 – Sales of existing homes in the US surged in June to their highest level in more than eight years and prices hit a record high, the National Association of Realtors said Wednesday. Sales of previously owned homes rose to an annual rate of 5.49 million units, a gain of 3.2 percent from the slightly downwardly revised May level, the NAR reported. June’s heated sales pace was the strongest since February 2007, before the economy entered the Great Recession. It came in well above analysts’ consensus estimate of a 0.9 percent increase month-over-month. Year-over-year, existing-home sales were up 9.6 percent.
The combination of rising demand and a limited supply helped to push the median sales price above the July 2006 peak to a record high, NAR said. The spring buying season has been the strongest since the downturn, said Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist. “Buyers have come back in force, leading to the strongest past two months in sales since early 2007,” he said. “This wave of demand is being fueled by a year-plus of steady job growth and an improving economy that’s giving more households the financial wherewithal and incentive to buy.” The median existing-home sales price in June was $236,400, a gain of 6.5 percent from June 2014 and the 40ã« straight month of year-over-year gains.
Probe on ‘White House’ controversy will continue – PNP chief Marquez MANILA, July 21 (Mabuhay) -Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ricardo Marquez on Tuesday assured the public that investigation on the alleged anomalies surrounding the so-called “White House” in Camp Crame will continue even if it has now become his official residence. Marquez said the Ombudsman has meted out administrative sanctions in connection with the donations gathered for the White House’s construction in 2013. At the time, the occupant of the two-story residence was then-PNP Chief Director General Alan Purisima. In late June, the Ombudsman ordered the dismissal of Purisima and 10 other
police officials over another controversy – entering into an allegedly anomalous contract with service courier Werfast Documentary Agency (Werfast) in 2011. “Nagkaroon na ng administrative decision ang Ombudsman. ‘Yung mga pinaniniwalaang sangkot doon ay nabigyan na ng kaparusahan at ang alam ko ay parang administrative remedies ang ginagawa ngayon,” Marquez said. Asked if the investigation on the White House’s controversy will continue, Marquez replied in the affirmative. The White House landed in the headlines last year after reports surfaced that its construction cost reportedly reached around P20 million.

The 59-nine year old Arsenio Cheron Hall, Sr. (born in Cleveland, Ohio on February 12, 1956) , was the son of Fred and Anne Hall. Fred was a Baptist minister and Arsenio used to perform as a magician when he was a child, though he graduated high school from Warrensville Heights, Ohio in 1973 and after graduation from high school, he attended Ohio University, but later on transferred and graduated from Kent University. He was best known for hosting his late night talk show , “The Arsenio Hall Show,,” which ran on television from 1989 through 1994, and later on was repeated from 2013 through 2014. One of the funniest guys who also performed was Erik Myers. He appeared like a “loveable lunatic” with his high energy jokes, which apparently he’s been doing for the past 13 years. He can be seen next year on “Andrew Dice Clay presents the Blue Show” on Showtime and “Comic Unleashed” with Byron Allen. Filipino-Canadian Ron Josol was a surprise performer for us due to his “commanding stage presence.” According to his Bio on Laughstub, on his second year as a comedian, Josol won the Craven A’s “Funniest Home Grown Competition” for
Montreal’s “Just For Laughs Festival” in 2000, Since then, he has been performing in festivals such as the ‘Winnipeg Comedy Festival,” “International Comedy Fest 2k8,” “Orange County Comedy Festival,” and the “LOL Comedy Festival” in Hollywood, California. As a multi-talented artist, this Filipino-Canadian has hosted his own television series on the OMNI 2 Network called “Flip,” and as a writer/produceractor, he starred as a lead in a short film based on his life , entitled “Rolling Longganiza,” which was aired on CBC 2Flicks. Another impressive performer was Jason Stuart, who said he was born in Bronx, New York but was raised here in LA. He is known to be openly gay and is active as the chair of the Screen Actors Guild National LGBT Actors Committee. He has played both gay and straight roles on numerous television shows such as: “Will & Grace,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “The George Lopez Show” and “Charmeal.” Indeed, though the Ice House was packed that night, the six of us had a truly great evening of laughter and “comic relief.” For those of you who wish to experience “laughter at its best,” feel free to look up the Ice House’s monthly schedule on their website:www.icehousecomedy.com.

Aquino: Don’t elect candidates who prioritize self-interest
NORZAGARAY, Bulacan, July 22 (Mabuhay) – As he draws close to revealing his anointed one, President Benigno Aquino III told voters on Wednesday not to elect candidates who put self-interest over the country’s welfare. In a speech after inspecting the Angat Dam, Aquino warned the public against politicians who give empty promises, and who will take advantage of their posts for personal gain. At the same time, the President said the public should choose a leader who stays true to his word. “Ito po ang panawagan ko sa inyo: Piliin n’yo ang lider na totoo sa inyo. Hindi sinumang magbibitiw ng mga pahayag at pangakong walang laman,” Aquino said. “Hindi sinumang may kaunting duda tayong magsasamantala at manlalamang. Hindi sinumang may ambisyong parating pansarili imbes na para sa buong bayan,” he added. Once again, Aquino said the next president should continue his reforms. “Piliin natin ang indibidwal na panatag tayong magpapatuloy ng ‘Tuwid na Daan,’” the President said, referring to the phrase he used in 2010 to sum up his anti-corruption platform. President Aquino has been conducting meetings over the past weeks, as his self-imposed deadline for endorsing a presidential bet nears. Aquino earlier said he will reveal his presidential pick this month after his final State of the Nation Address next week. The President has repeatedly met with independent Senator Grace Poe, who recently emerged as top pick for next president based on pre-election preference polls. He also sat down with Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, who is presumed to be the Liberal Party (LP) standardbearer for the 2016 polls, and Senator Francis Escudero, who is considering teaming up with Poe for the upcoming polls. The President also recently relayed the outcome of these meetings to top officials of the LP, including House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr., Senate President Franklin Drilon and Budget Secretary Butch Abad. Even after these meetings, however, several politicians privy to the talks—including Poe, Abad and Belmonte— indicated that no consensus has been reached on a single administration ticket for 2016. PHL can withstand economic shocks from China MANILA, July 22 (Mabuhay) – The Philippines remains insulated from risks arising from the collapse of the Chinese stock market amid a slowdown in the world’s second biggest economy, according to the Department of Finance (DOF). “Strong macroeconomic fundamentals and a market-based framework differentiate the Philippines. The market recognizes the sound economic stewardship and deep-seated reforms over the past five years, shielding the economy from external shocks and bolstering domestic demand buoying the economy,” DOF Undersecretary and Chief Economist Gil Beltran said Wednesday. Philippine investments in Chinese stock markets amounted to $252.5 million, of which only $2.5 million are in stocks with the balance placed China’s debt papers, according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, citing data as of end-June 2015. China’s portfolio investments in the Philippines were negligible as of May, the DOF noted, citing data from the central bank without giving a specific number. The crash of share prices in China has elicited serious concerns among investors in the Philippine bourse, as a sudden downturn in the Asian giant could trigger global economic turmoil and effectively undermine bright prospects for the economy. This adds to the Greek debt crisis and the possible interest rate hike in the US that have been hounding the market. But the government believes no contagion would
reach Philippine shores. “While investor risk appetite in global markets continue to be weighed down by prevailing uncertainties and the impending rates lift-off in the US, the Philippines remains a bright spot and stands out due to our consistent record of high growth and strong fundamentals,” Beltran said. The DOF noted that global financial services firm UBS AG has listed the Philippines one of the biggest electronics exporters to China while economic research consultancy Capital Economics expects the country to remain one of the region’s fastest growing economies in the third quarter partly due to improving prospects for exports. “Heightened vigilance of the regulatory authorities through proper surveillance and credible disclosure framework provides for early detection and warning signals of systemic risks. Sustaining these reforms builds a more resilient financial market infrastructure and insures the health of our capital markets,” said Beltran. On the fiscal side, the government debt-to-gross domestic product (GDP) ratio has consistently dropped to 36.4 percent in 2014 from 68.1 percent in earlier years, according to the DOF. It said robust fiscal and monetary policy coordination is “facilitating the appropriate mix of policy responses to allow market forces to drive the economy and a regulatory regime that fosters transparency and fair competition.” (MNS)
Drilon: Aquino’s ‘chosen one’ known days after SONA MANILA, July 22 (Mabuhay) – President Benigno Aquino III will name his preferred successor days after delivering his last State of the Nation Address, Senate President Franklin Drilon said. Roxas originally wanted to seek the presidency in 2010 but gave way to then-Sen. Aquino. Roxas lost to Vice President Jejomar Binay but has a pending
electoral protest before the Presidential Electoral Tribunal. According to Poe, they had agreed to listen to the voice of the people to ensure that efforts towards good governance will not go to waste. (MNS)
PNP chief: No security threat on SONA MANILA, July 22 (Mabuhay) – Newlyinstalled Philippine National Police chief Director General Ricardo Marquez expressed confidence Wednesday that the last State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Benigno Aquino III will go smoothly as far as security aspect is concerned. In a press conference, Marquez said they have not monitored any security threat on Aquino’s last SONA on July 27. “Ang report sa atin ay walang threat,” he told reporters. Chief Supt. Generoso Cerbo, head of the PNP Directorate for Intelligence, said the police’ intelligence community is “continuously monitoring all possible threat to the SONA. “I can say with confidence that at this point there is nothing specific,” Cerbo added. As Cerbo continues his report, Marquez cut the police official and said: “Gene, that’s enough nothing specific. I think the SONA
will go on smoothly.” Marquez said that the PNP started preparing for the SONA as early as three months ago. “Ang secret is planning in advance. Tatlong buwan pa lang before SONA inaanticipate na ‘yan. May implementing plan na ang National Capital Region [Police Office] at the directorial staff have convened several meetings to fine tune the security plan,” he said. He added that they will conduct another meeting later in the afternoon together with the members of the Presidential Security Group. “There is going to be another meeting, we have invited representatives from the PSG para maayos na maayos yung security plan. Advance planning ang philosophy ng PNP sa pagtingin sa mga gawaing ito,” he said. (MNS)

Porky Chiz
Former Senator Panfilo Lacson did a good job of unmasking the true character of Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero. Lacson has castigated Escudero for being silent about the existence of a P426 billion in pork barrel lump sum and discretionary funds inserted in the 2015 national budget in complete violation of a Supreme Court ruling. As chairman of the Senate finance committee, Escudero is in charge of ensuring that the national budget would pass all test of constitutionality and legality. voting to convict former Supreme Court Instead, what he probably did was to Chief Justice Renato Corona. Before Lacson’s exposé, Escudero has collude with Budget Secretary Florencio Abad on how to re-align these unused been successful in projecting himself as a government savings and convert into pork Senator whose integrity has not been tainted with corruption. If Escudero will turn out to be one of the favored billion-peso senators, his dream of becoming a Vice President or perhaps even a president will vanish into thin air. He could even be booted out as chairman of the Senate finance committee. This will have to see. Meanwhile, another close ally of President Aquino is embroiled in a billion-peso corruption issue. Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin is being linked as the mastermind in the P1.2 billion helicopter deal purchased by the department from an American firm identified as Rice Aircraft Services Incorporated (RASI). A whistleblower who works for the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) made allegations that Gazmin was paid a seven per cent commission or an equivalent of P88 million from the P1.2 billion helicopter deal he approved. The lady whistleblower

also claimed that an additional P63 million was also paid by RASI to some DND officials for facilitating the deal. With one more year before he vows out from office, I’m sure Gazmin will not be the last official of the President to be accused on issues concerning graft. I don’t know why the Senate Blue Ribbon committee is silent on the issue regarding the DND helicopter deal. Surprisingly, the troika of Senators Koko Pimentel, Antonio Trillanes and Alan Cayetano are also silent on the issue. Most probably, the current resident in Malacañang must have told them to shut up or they will not get their usual payola otherwise known as DAP and PDAF funds which been successfully inserted in the 2015 budget with the help of Senator Escudero. It certainly is going to be a very interesting election period, indeed.
Mar is PNoy’s anointed, says ally MANILA, July 21 (Mabuhay) -- President Aquino’s endorsement of Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas for the 2016 presidential elections is a done deal. That’s what Roxas ally, Caloocan Rep. Edgar Erice thinks after Senator Grace Poe met with the President on Monday. In a statement, Poe said: “The President and I talked for about five hours. I could sense the very difficult position PNoy is in right now. I understand and sympathize with his predicament and situation. I consider him a true and sincere friend and he has my utmost respect. He reiterated his desire for all of us to continue working together and that he believes that, like him, we can and will do what is best for our country. In the end, we both agreed to continue, in whatever capacity, striving and working for our countrymen and for the betterment of our children’s future.” Asked if he thought Poe’s statement signaled that Roxas’ endorsement by Aquino is imminent, Erice said: “There is no doubt on my mind the President will anoint Secretary Mar. “The President knows Mar Roxas very well. He knows that Mar is sincere, very honest, intelligent and capable, knows the intricacies of running a government, a reformist. But most of all, Mar Roxas loves our country. The President also knows that none of the wannabes can match his track record and I also think that the President will campaign hard and go around the country to pitch for Mar because he knows too well that the continuity of the legacies of tuwid na daan will be ensured by Mar’s presidency.” Erice believes the endorsement will come after the President delivers his final State of the Nation Address next week. Roxas was Aquino’s 2010 runningmate, sliding down in Aquino’s favor after surveys showed he had better chances of winning following the death of President Cory Aquino in 2009. Another Roxas ally in the Lower House, YACAP party-list Rep. Carol Jayne Lopez, echoed Erice’s belief. “I believe the President never for a minute wavered, nor had second thoughts,
on who he thinks is most reliable and had the strength of character to continue the programs started by his administration, especially poverty alleviation and economic development programs, and most critically, anti-corruption programs,” Lopez said. “I heard she is still unsure of her plans. And as it would be a great contribution to the vision of this administration to have Sen. Grace Poe as Secretary Mar’s VP, we also have not wavered, nor had second thoughts, that we will carry on with the fight for Secretary Mar, while Senator Poe sorts things out and finds her ultimate decision,” the lawmaker added. Lopez leads other Roxas allies in Congress which include Erice, Congressmen Dan Fernandez, Chicoy Alvarez, Bolet Banal, Sam Gullas, Ibarra Gutierrez and Luigi Quisumbing, among others. Why Pnoy met with Poe For UP-based political science assistant professor Jan Robert Go, Aquino met with Senator Poe to make sure his relationship with the senator will survive no matter what happens. “PNoy is really torn between Mar and Poe. But it seems that there is strong pressure from LP. What PNoy might be trying to do now is to ensure that Poe and him will be in good working relations, especially after his term. This is important.” Like the politicians, Go believes Aquino will stick it out with Roxas. “LP will push for Mar and this is why PNoy is in a dilemma. But if PNoy would stick with his party’s choice instead of Poe (and Chiz), that is something laudable.” Go also thinks the idea of Poe becoming Roxas’ running-mate may not happen. “I think they are still exploring the idea of Poe as VP to Mar. However, the statements of Poe and Chiz made it clear that Mar is out of the picture. So now, as a party, they have to support their own, Mar.” In their Koronadal trip last Saturday, Poe repeatedly mentioned her ties to Senator Francis Escudero when she addressed the T’Nalak Festival. Poe has always referred to Escudero as her preferred running-mate should she run for higher office.(MNS)

In her acceptance speech when she was conferred another award recently, Superstar Nora Aunor thanked John Rendez for his continuous support and care. Vilma Santos: No more politics after 2016
Multi-awarded actress and Batangas governor Vilma Santos-Recto said on Wednesday that after 2016, she will not be running for a higher position. “After this time, wala po akong political plan… andito ako sa Balayan regarding scholarship; this is my focus now. So hindi ko po priority yan, para pag-isipin o magplano regarding a national position,” Santos-Recto said. (After this time, I do not have political plans yet. I’m here in Balayan for a scholarship program; this is my focus now. So to consider or plan for a higher position is not my priority.) She also said that she is not entertaining feelers urging her to run for vice president under the administration party. “Puro usap-usapan, pero yung sasabihin niyo pong formal dialogue, wala naman pong ganyan… May mga nagpapasabi (urging Santos to run for higher position) pero I do not consider that formal, so I don’t entertain it,” the actress-politician said. (They are all rumors and no formal dialogue took place. There are feelers but I don’t consider that formal, so I don’t entertain it.) Presumptive Liberal Party bet Interior Secretary Mar Roxas said that he is open to the possibility of running with Santos-Recto. Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, meanwhile, said that the actress-politician would be a “good choice” for vice president due to her clean track record. Santos-Recto said that she will channel her efforts in helping her husband, Senator Ralph Recto, win a second term. She is also focused on finishing a still-untitled Star Cinema movie with Angel Locsin and Xian Lim. The “Star for All Seasons” is now on her third and final term as governor of Batangas. She thanked Batangueños for placing their trust in her. “Malaki ang utang na loob ko sa Batangueño na ako ay pinagkatiwalaan at nakatapos po ng siyam na taon. At ngayon po ay nasa huling termino na ako bilang Gobernador. Maraming maraming salamat po sa tiwala,” she said. (I am thankful to all Batangueños for their trust in me for the past nine years. I am now in my last term as governor. Thank you very much for the trust.) Before she became the governor of Batangas, she first served as the first female mayor of Lipa City, winning three consecutive terms. (MNS)

Pacquiao to lobby for Philippines’ World Cup bid General Santos, Philippines (AFP) Wednesday 7/22/2015 – Boxing hero Manny Pacquiao said Wednesday he would promote the Philippines’ bid to host the 2019 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup. “Yes, I’m going to Tokyo with the Philippine delegation to help in our bid to host FIBA 2019,” he said in a statement. Pacquiao, 36, said he would travel next month to the Japanese capital where FIBA would announce the host. The basketball-crazy Philippines qualified for last year’s FIBA World Cup in Spain, finishing 21st. It faces stiff competition from Asian giant China as host for the 2019 event, according to the FIBA website.
Pacquiao, who has gained worldwide fame for holding boxing world titles in eight weight divisions, is also an avid basketball fan. Last year he controversially signed on as playing coach of a neophyte team in the highly-competitive Philippine professional basketball league. However the 1.69-metre (5 foot 7 inch) Pacquiao has been underwhelming on the hardcourt, playing just for a few minutes in each game despite cheering fans in the bleachers. Pacquiao has parlayed his boxing fame into a fortune in showbiz, as a commercial endorser and even in politics, winning election as the congressman of a district in the poverty-stricken southern Philippines.
Pacquiao downplays Arum criticism, says in ‘self-rehab’ General Santos, Philippines | AFP | Monday 7/20/2015 – Manny Pacquiao downplayed criticism from promoter Bob Arum on Monday after the injured Philippine boxing hero missed a doctor’s visit for a shoulder injury, saying he was carrying out his own rehabilitation. Arum hit out at his own boxer last weekend for missing a rehab visit and said he has no idea when “Pacman” might fight again after his right shoulder was hurt fighting Floyd Mayweather in May. “I respect Bob Arum. He’s just like a father to me. I believe he’s just voicing out his concern (for) me and I appreciate it. I don’t take it negatively,” Pacquiao said in a statement. “But he has nothing to worry about (regarding) my injury. I’m doing the rehab myself. I’m recovering faster than expected.” Pacquiao had surgery on May 7 to repair a tear to his right rotator cuff sustained in the unanimous points defeat against Mayweather in the richest fight of all time in Las Vegas. He cancelled a scheduled check-up with his surgeon Neal ElAttrache at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles on July 4, prompting sharp criticism from the 83-year-old head of Top Rank promotions, who said “he’s not acting
very professionally”. Pacquiao did not say if he was receiving medical advice or treatment from another doctor but said his situation was improving, adding: “I can now raise my right arm.” The Filipino, winner of an unprecedented eight world titles in separate weight divisions, did not respond to his American promoter’s remark that as far as he was concerned the boxer is “not an active fighter’. Just days after missing the July 4 appointment, Pacquiao travelled to Indonesia in a much-publicized trip to film a television advertisement and visit a Filipina on death row who is seeking clemency. Arum insisted that Pacquiao’s first priority should have been his appointment with his LA surgeon to decide on his rehabilitation program. “When you have an operation like that you’ve got to get into rehab. You’ve got to get the doctor to look at it and to guide you as to the kind of rehab that you’ve got to do,” Arum told AFP. Pacquiao is regarded as a national hero in the Philippines and has parlayed his fame into a career in film, commercial endorsements and even election as a congressman.

US Open to return to Los Angeles in 2023 Los Angeles, United States (AFP) Wednesday 7/22/2015 – The United States Golf Association announced Wednesday that the 2023 US Open will be played at the Los Angeles Country Club, the first time since 1948 the city will host the major championship. The USGA also said the 2022 US Open will be at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts and the 2024 event will be hosted by Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina. “We are elated to host our national championship at these three historic venues,” said Thomas O’Toole, president of the USGA. “Each one is located in a region where golf and sports are celebrated, and we have already felt tremendous community support. We look forward to the test of golf that each of these classic designs will present to the world’s best players.” The US Open is one golf’s four major championships along with the PGA Championship, the British Open and The
Masters. It is the first time the US Open will be held in Los Angeles since Ben Hogan won the event in 1948 at the Riviera Country Club. The Riviera has played host to two PGA Championships in 1995 and 1983. The tournament will run from June 15-18 on the LACC’s north course which opened in 1911 and was given an extensive facelift five years ago. “The city loves to host major events,” said LACC club president John Chulick. “This region, not having hosted the US Open for 75 years will be ecstatic about this.” Riviera had previously tried to woo the US Open back to its Pacific Palisades site but a lack of parking the course’s small layout are two drawbacks. Brookline will get its fourth US Open and Pinehurst will get its fourth in 25 years. Some of the other previously announced US Opens include Oakmont (2016), Erin Hills (2017), Shinnecock Hills (2018) and Pebble Beach in 2019.

Women with Alzheimer’s may face faster decline than men Wednesday July 22 2015 (ĂłÂƒĂ?ÂŤÂŽĂ„ÂŚĂŁĂŠĂ„ÂƒÂĽĂ–) – Women with Alzheimer’s may face a swifter mental decline than men with the same condition, but researchers are not sure why, according to a study released this week at US a medical conference. Some two-thirds of US seniors living with Alzheimer’s disease are women, and women are almost twice as likely as men to develop the incurable cognitive disease, according to the Alzheimer’s Association, which is hosting is annual conference in the US capital. On Tuesday, researchers from Duke University presented findings on a study of 141 women and 257 men, aged in their mid 70s, who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. After studying the group for eight years, they found that women’s cognitive abilities declined twice as fast as those of men, judging by mental tests taken each year to gauge memory and other skills. “Our findings suggest that men and women at risk for Alzheimer’s may be hav-
ing two very different experiences, said lead author Katherine Amy Lin at Duke University Medical Center. “Our analyses show that women with mild memory impairments deteriorate at much faster rates than men in both cognitive and functional abilities. The reasons behind the difference remain unclear, and more study is needed to determine if there are gender-specific genetic or environmental risk factors at play. “Women are disproportionately affected by Alzheimer’s, and there is an urgent need to understand if differences in brain structure, disease progression, and biological characteristics contribute to higher prevalence and rates of cognitive decline, said Maria Carrillo, Alzheimer’s Association chief scientific officer. Alzheimer’s disease affects some 44 million people around the world, and cases are expected to skyrocket as the global population ages.
Chronic pain sufferers increasingly supplementing treatment with alternative therapy Wednesday July 22 2015 (Relaxnews) – A research team based in Portland, Oregon, has demonstrated that many patients suffering from chronic musculoskeletal pain resort to acupuncture and chiropractic care in addition to their medical traitement without necessarily telling their clinician. Supplemental alternative therapy, especially to relieve pain, has become increasingly more widespread in the last 15 years. Even so, the integration of acupuncture and chiropractic care with conventional practice remains practically inexistent. Indeed, many specialists are convinced that better integration could potentially improve coordination of care and overall outcomes. A study conducted by researchers at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, Oregon provides insight into the current state of alternative therapy in managed health care systems. Findings published in The American Journal of Managed Care demonstrate that a substantial percentage of patients suffering from chronic musculoskeletal pain seek alternative therapy in complement to the treatments prescribed by their clinicians. Of the patients invited to participate in the study, the 6,068 patients suffering from chronic musculoskeletal pain became the focus. With a mean age of 61, the participants were predominantly Caucasian (94%) and female (71%). All had been treated at the Kaiser Permanente Center between 2009 and 2011, with several outpatient consultations for chronic pain within the last 18 months. The survey included questions on their use of acupuncture and chiropractic care, as well as other therapies such as yoga, tai chi/qigong, massage and meditation. Among the participant responses, 32% reported the use of acupuncture, 47% reported the use of chiropractic care, and 21% reported using both while 42% stated that they used neither. In addition, 35% of acupuncture users and 42% of chiropractic users said they had not discussed their use of alternative therapy with their clinician. “This finding serves to emphasize the importance of clinicians raising this topic in routine encounters with chronic pain patients, conclude the authors of the study. “Engaging the patient in a discussion about acupuncture and chiropractic use can provide information for optimizing care.

CSI’s free workshops: Mentoring applicants to have the right attitude for hire Here at CSI Professionals we do not just provide placement services. There is a reason why we have a placement rate of 90%. We have a holistic approach in dealing with our clients. We help our clients realize that their achievements can take them far but their attitude can take them further. Just like how one of our interns ended up with us, after searching for a part time work or internship in different companies – we guided and assisted him in jumpstarting his journey from internship to an actual training in the corporate world. A testimony from our intern: “Being a college student, officially entering the workforce in just after few years in school, looks intimidating. It is quite a huge transition to adulthood. Grabbing an internship, especially one that deals with the area of interest that I am pursuing, provides the necessary experience and “frontseat view” of how the workplace functions. I know it will prepare myself for when I enter the workforce for an actual job. Internships, though easy to apply for, are hard to obtain. It is a fact that there are many other college students in the same situation, looking for internships. This is when I turned to CSI Professionals Inc. They provided me with an internship that puts me head-on into the daily life in an office, which is an essential training for my future. Internships, just the same case as looking for a job: one position may have several applicants and this time there is a competition among many other people who may be qualified or even more qualified than you are.” CSI consistently guides clients in their placement needs or training, and continuously follows their journey in employment and sponsorship. We mentor applicants in carrying the right attitude that every employer wants to hire. Attend our FREE workshop on August 7, 2015 (Friday) to know more about what we offer and how we can help you. Venue is at 100 N. Brand Blvd., 6th Floor, Glendale CA 91203. Call us for more details and to reserve seats: 213-487-5059 or 818-476-0082

Julius Obregon – “The Master Balladeer”
Nonoy Zuñiga – “The Hitmaker”
‘The Main Event’ at Knotts Berry to settle issues between N. Zuniga and J. Obregon The issue has to be settled between two iconic singers whose different styles make for an interesting musical duel. Like wine, these two claimants to the singing throne have mellowed over the years since their first encounter in the firsta Main Event at the Rizal Theater in Makati more than three decades ago. The protagonists would like to settle the issue once and for all and have chosen a neutral venue for the epic battle of talents. Nonoy Zuniga “the Hitmaker” will slug it out with Julius Obregon “The Master Balladeer”. The latter has different a different route but his style still carries that wallop worthy of the claim on the throne. Zuniga, on the other hand, has added up more power in his vocal attacks by being active on the circuit. The Main Event on July 31st at the 800-seating capacity Grand Ballroom of the Knott’s Berry Farm Hotel in Buena Park (7675 Crescent Avenue) will have all the trimmings and the hoopla expected of an event that will settle the score for the two gallant performers whose differing styles make for an unforgettable concert evening. Both singers have awesome credentials: Zuniga has performed over a 20-year period in the best night spots, hotels and concert venues in the Philip-
pines and Asian cities including the U.S. His credentials include hits like “Kumusta Ka”, “Doon Lang”, “Love Without Time” and “Never Say Goodbye”. Obregon’s style had been influenced by singing greats like Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennet, Johnny Mathis and Matt Monroe and is remembered for record hits that include “Song Lucky”, “The Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me”, “Terminal”, and “How Can I Tell Her”. He is also now in Gospel Music and active evangelist and pastor. The Main Event is going to be an unforgettable experience not seen before in the concert circuits according concert producer Obregon whose outfit is producing the two-hour musical extravaganza which will also feature multi-talented Joseph Gelito who will “referee” the much awaited encounter. Supporting cards will also feature Tanya Varona and Casey Alexandria, an upcoming folk singer. “It’s going to be a vehicle that will transport concert goers through different epoch of musical history” says Obregon. Ask DMV: Helpful information for California drivers I am interested in learning how to drive. How can I find a credible driving school? The DMV offers a webpage where you can find helpful information about selecting a driving school for driver education and driver training. Simply visit www.dmv.ca.gov and in the search box enter Selecting a Driving School. You should know that the DMV licenses professional schools and instructors in California and requires them to meet rigid qualifying standards and carry liability insurance, hold a bond, and maintain complete records for a DMV inspection. Also, if you use the services of a professional driving school, ask to see
the instructor’s identification card. Instructors must pass a written examination every three years or show proof of continuing education in the traffic safety field. What is the purpose of the Renewal Identification Number that appears on my registration billing notice? The Renewal Identification Number is required when calling the DMV customer service center or using a field office self-service terminal to renew your vehicle registration. It is not required if you plan to renew your registration using the DMV website. To locate a self-service terminal near you, visit: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/fo/fo_sst/.

Saturday July 18 2015 (Relaxnews) – AT&T is partnering with Google, Samsung and Bose on an interactive campaign aimed at underlining the dangers of smartphone use while driving. Central to the campaign called ‘It Can Wait’ is a virtual reality experience designed to put consumers in the driving seat and understand the huge potential vehicular consequences of taking just a quick glance at their phone’s screen rather than keeping both eyes on the road. When AT&T starts touring the US later this year it will be inviting people in each of the 100 cities it will be visiting to experience the simulator for themselves via the Samsung Gear VR headset. But to ensure that as many drivers as possible get the message, 100,000 Google Cardboard viewers are also being given away free of charge during the campaign. So, as long as a person has a compatible Android headset, they can download and try the app for themselves. By turning to virtual reality and brands like Bose for help, AT&T is intentionally targeting younger drivers, which is understandable as they’re the most likely to be distracted by mobile devices while behind the wheel and the group of drivers most likely to have a road traffic accident. According to US insurer State Farm’s most recent annual Distracted Driving Study (published in November), 58% of drivers aged 18-29 admit to text messaging while driving and 48% to surfing the web via a handset -- 30% even update the social media status. This is particularly worrying as driver distraction is a factor in almost six out of 10 car accidents involving young drivers in America. In March, the AAA published the findings of what it described as the most comprehensive study to date on the subject. It was a project that required an analysis of almost 1700 accidents captured on in-vehicle video recorders and one that identified driver distraction as the cause of 58% of accidents, 89% of road departure accidents and 76% of rear-end crashes. Using a cellphone or smartphone was a direct factor in 12% of crashes and turning to talk to other passengers in the car a factor in 15% of smashes. More importantly, the research highlighted that texting or making a voice call led to a driver taking his or her eyes off the road for an average of 4.1 seconds of the final six seconds prior to a crash. Drivers using a phone also failed to react before impact in over 50% of rearend crashes. AT&T’s advertising and VR campaign aims to recreate those vital moments before an accident to highlight the risks of glancing at a screen rather than the road ahead.

Michigan aims to lead the world in autonomous driving technology Wednesday July 22 2015 (Relaxnews) – The University of Michigan has formally opened a 32-acre playground especially for the development of self-driving and connected cars. Called Mcity it is the world’s first environment of its kind dedicated to the development of the technologies that will make self-driving cars a real-world reality, and is a partnership between the university and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). “We believe that this transformation to connected and automated mobility will be a game changer for safety, for efficiency, for energy, and for accessibility,” said Peter Sweatman, director of the U-M Mobility Transformation Center. “Our cities will be much better to live in, our suburbs will be much better to live in. These technologies truly open the door to 21Ýã century mobility.” The site, which cost $10 million to develop, will play host to connected and self-driving cars and features everything from intersections and traffic lights to blocks of buildings and sidewalks in a bid to effectively mimic the most challenging and unpredictable real-world inner-city driving conditions. There is even graffiti on the street signs in order to challenge traffic sign recognition systems. A key target of the venture is to put a fleet of driverless and connected cars on the roads of Ann Arbor, Michigan by 2021 but another is also to highlight the importance of Michigan as a hotbed of innovation. As cars become more technologically advanced and companies such as Google start to enter the fray, it’s easy to forget that Silicon Valley is not the automotive research and development capital of the US. Thanks to its pivotal role in the development of the original mass-market automobile, it’s Michigan and as the car goes through its biggest revolution since the internal combustion engine, the state wants to retain its world-leading status. As well as academic and legislative partners, the Mcity project is backed by a veritable who’s who of the automotive world that includes Honda, Ford, GM, Nissan, and Toyota as well as chipmaker Qualcomm. “Mcity represents an important partnership between government at all levels, private industry and academia,” said Kirk Steudle, director of the Michigan Department of Transportation.

The first notes are immediately recognizable by Honda’s target buyers who now have families of their own, and who remember that song from happy days of their youth. “The campaign leverages the Pilot’s strengths with two impactful spots, showing that the Pilot is ‘Ready for Anything.’
Hacked vehicle prompts Fiat Chrysler onboard update Wednesday July 22 2015 (Relaxnews) – Cyber security experts Chris Valasek and Charlie Miller have publicly exposed a serious vulnerability that would allow hackers to take remote control of Fiat Chrysler Automobile (FCA) cars that run its Uconnect internet-accessing software for connected car features. Uconnect allows owners of cars such as the Jeep Cherokee to remotely start and stop the engine and flash the lights (to find the car on a parking lot) and lock and unlock doors via a smartkey or smartphone. However, as the researchers demonstrated to Wired’s Andy Greenberg, the system also allows those in the know to remotely hijack the signal and run the car off the road even when someone else is meant to be at the wheel. Such an act might be deemed irresponsible but the researchers, who uncover theses flaws for a living, first notified FCA about the problem nine months ago and until now have remained silent about the discovery. Patching the problem has taken time and FCA issued a software fix for the issue on July 16. However, the wording of the update: “Today, [the cybersecurity program] at FCA released a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) for a software update that offers customers improved vehicle electronic security and communications system enhancements,” plus the fact that the update needs to be downloaded onto a USB key and physically installed by the owner, fails to highlight the potential seriousness of the problem. Vehicle recalls have been receiving a lot of media attention in recent months, yet according to Autotrader data, only 56% of drivers can be counted upon to take their vehicle in for servicing or correction every time. Scare stories about connected car hacks also get a lot of attention but usually the stories are heavy on the scaremongering and low on the practicalities of hacking. Valasek and Charlie Miller have made it their business to test the security of cars in recent years and were the first experts topublish a white paper on the potential vulnerabilities and attacks in 2014.

Have reports of the Land Rover Defender’s demise been exaggerated? Monday July 20 2015 (Relaxnews) – The original rugged off-roader, one of the most iconic and recognizable vehicles in the world, was meant to be heading out to pasture at the end of 2015 after a job well done. The company had even built three celebratory models to highlight the car’s glorious past as a last hurrah, before turning its attention to a replacement model. However, according to a report in the Birmingham Post, the regional newspaper published in Solihull where the final Land Rovers are being assembled, a plant worker is quoted as saying: “It is going to be extended until at least the end of February [2016].” The same source also suggests that production could in fact continue until April. Following the initial story, Land Rover issued a statement neither confirming nor completely denying the reports. The company said that that it does not production to continue past the end of January but accepted that no confirmed termination
date has been set. The Land Rover (called the Defender since 1989) has been in constant production since 1948 and has changed so little in terms of chassis and underpinnings in all that time that as legislation surrounding engine emissions and passenger and driver safety continue to tighten, it is no longer cost effective and in some cases, even possible, to adapt the vehicle to keep it in production in its current form. It’s why the car hasn’t been on sale in the US since 1998 when it fell foul of air bag and side impact door beam legislation. When compared with the newer, shinier models in the company’s range – the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, the Evoque and the Discovery, the defender looks decidedly agricultural and, historically, that’s been its primary market. And that’s understandable, as the car remains predominantly mechanical and possible to repair with tools, rather than a laptop and diagnostics cable.
